Op-Ed Remembering Columbus

To the Editor: Letter writer Philip Blumenkrantz (“Columbus not worthy,” Oct. 4) is, as the cliche goes, entitled to his own opinion but not his own facts. He forgets, first of all, that Christopher Columbus was a medieval man in a very religious environment. As I said in my piece (“Christopher Columbus, Admiral of the Ocean Sea,” Sept. 20), Columbus’ first goal was evangelical: to fund a crusade. He really believed that Jerusalem had to be saved from the Muslims in order to prepare for the Second Coming of Christ. His mission was to find that wealth. Columbus did not institute slavery, nor is there any evidence that he personally owned any. It was a universal practice, including among some of the Caribbean tribes he encountered. As I already noted, he also did not have complete control of the rebellious Spanish crew and settlers who followed him on his various expeditions. It is an error to make Columbus a symbol of everything that went wrong. Bartolome de Las Casas, whom Mr. Blumenkrantz mentions, was only 8 years old when Columbus landed on San Salvador. He was also, for awhile, a slave owner, until his Damascus moment. It was he, not Columbus, who suggested importing African slaves to take the place of natives who had succumbed primarily to European diseases. After his conversion, he became a friar and a champion of human rights — belated restitution for the years when he himself owned slaves, and encouraged the African slave trade. I never said that Christopher Columbus was a saint. But he cannot be blamed for every evil that ensued during his four expeditions or the European invasion that followed. I also tend to agree with Mr. Blumenkrantz that we Americans need to be careful of assuming any moral superiority. Let’s remember, however, that we are a nation of laws and a powerful influence on the world. We were one of the first nations to abolish slavery; to have universal suffrage; and to face head on the threats of communism and fascism. While not perfect, our developing democratic republic is a model for the world. Columbus set the wheels in motion for that future history. For that alone he needs to be remembered. Gloria C. Endres South Philadelphia

Opposing the ‘not-worthy’ view

To the Editor: The politically correct crowd is always quick to jump for causes, such as Christopher Columbus. As the P.C. crowd spreads their false/incomplete narrative that Columbus was satan incarnate, I offer some facts. The Indians or Indigenous people, whatever you chose to call them, weren’t such angels themselves. They weren’t handing out flowers spreading peace and love. To the contrary, most were cannibals. It’s a historical fact. They

were slave holders. Also they unfortunately committed other bad things that plague mankind such as rape, murder, assault….. Like the south in the Civil War, they lost. Hence, the Columbus argument comes down to freedom to celebrate who or what we want. If people want it changed, they can always go to their councilperson, or better yet, vote on it. But lecturing others ... well, tell the facts on both sides. If you don’t want to celebrate Columbus, then don’t. You have free will. Illegal immigrants broke the law by coming here illegally. If the majority of the legal citizens don’t like it, then they could vote for politicians that will change the law and the hell with legal immigration altogether. The Review has become a liberal type newspaper so I doubt that this gets printed, but I can say the majority of us “lifers” [people born, raised, and still live here in Philly] feel the same way. The 11th Annual Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society Mutt Strut is set for Saturday at the Philadelphia Navy Yard on S. Broad Street.

Mutts ready to strut again at Navy Yard By Lindsey Nolen SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

L

ove dogs, exercise and fall weather? If so, the 11th Annual Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society Mutt Strut at the Navy Yard, 4747 S. Broad St., is the perfect way to kick off Saturday morning (Oct. 14). According to Melissa Levy, the executive director of PAWS, the Mutt

Strut is the organization’s biggest event of the year, with all proceeds going toward its life-saving efforts. In addition, PAWS is the city’s largest rescue and it is working to make Philadelphia a nokill city, with every pet it saves depending on the generosity of its supporters. “The Mutt Strut brings so many caring people together for a cause that is near and dear to their hearts,” Levy, whose involvement with the organization began 11 years ago as a volunteer, said. “It’s hard to believe this will be

our 11th Mutt Strut. Our team of staff and volunteers is incredibly proud of how [the event] has grown into the must-attend fall festival for dogs and the people who love them.” Adding that the day of the event is the organization’s favorite day of the year, Levy noted that with each year the Mutt Strut has gotten bigger and better. With activities for dogs, food trucks, a pet costume contest, talent contest, “Ask the Vet” and “Ask the Trainer” booths, agility course, paw print/paw

painting station, pet photo booth, adoptable dogs and more, there will be something available for all guests to enjoy. Live music and emcees, Steve Morrison from WMMR’s Preston and Steve Show, Matt Cord and Kristen Hermann from 95.7 Ben FM and Sue Serio from Fox29’s Good Day Philadelphia will also be present at the event. “We expect about 2,000 people to join us on Oct. 14,” Levy said. “We’ve found that October is a great month for a fall festival like this. Plus, being close

to Halloween, one of the highlights is all of the dogs who arrive in costume.” With registration opening at 9 a.m. and the walk kicking off at 11 a.m., PAWS encourages both those with dogs and those looking to adopt to head out to walk the 1.5-mile scenic route at the Navy Yard to help raise these funds and awareness for PAWS’ efforts to save Philadelphia’s homeless pets. Dozens of PAWS dogs who will be awaiting loving homes will be on hand. See MUTT STRUT, page 8>>

T Ready for the comforts of home Bramble arrived in rescue after her owner’s health declined and he was no longer able to care for her. kisses! Join Bramble and other adoptable pets at the 8th Annual Mums and Mutts Fall Festival on Saturday 11 a.m.-4 p.m. at Burke Playground, Second and Jackson streets. here is no doubt dogs of all sizes and breeds will be the center of attention on Saturday (Oct. 14) at Burke Playground, Second and Jackson streets. They are the guests of honor at the Eighth Annual Mums & Mutts Fall Festival, which benefits local animal rescues. “Look at that cute little puppy!,” will likely be the popular phrase of the day. Many of those four-legged cuties will be wishing for much more than a friendly hello - they want a loving family to take them home. This is a big part of what makes this annual Pennsportbased event extra special. “The Mums and Mutts Fall Festival is an amazing way for us to help raise much needed funds for local area animal rescues and shelters, as well as provide an event where people can come and meet adoptable pets,” Megan McFarland, a former South Philly Review Difference Maker who started the organization in 2010, said. “There are so many pets that need loving homes, and my dream is that we can help many of them find just that!” Over the last seven years, the organization has helped hundreds of pets find forever homes. Many of them have appeared on the pages of the South Philly Review as part of the weekly Adopt This Pet feature. Others are featured during the PHL17 Morning News/Eye Opener segment every Friday. This weekend’s event is the chance to interact with the dogs, and possibly go home with an extra family member. The festivities will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will include live music,

food and drink, giveaways, vendors and more. Gina Gannon from 6 ABC News is the host. There will be plenty of activities for the children, too, with a kids zone, face painting, games, arts and crafts, bouncy house and magic show. Pets are encouraged to come dressed to impress so they can participate in the doggie costume contest. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children under 12. For more information, mumsandmutts.org/events.

MUTT STRUT: Event Saturday

<<Continued from page 6 Typically, the event brings out 20 to 24 adoptable dogs, most, if not all, who are adopted that day. “It’s a fun day in a beautiful setting for a great cause,” Levy, who has a dog named Rosie found as a stray in North Philadelphia, said. “Bring your pup or just come to take it all in, meet new friends, listen to good music and eat delicious food, knowing that you’re helping to save homeless pets who need you.” At a cost of $25 per adult to register, with chil-

dren 12 and under free, all participants will receive a PAWS eco-bag and dog bandana. The organization hopes to raise $125,000, which would be a new record. “PAWS is 100 percent donor-funded, so all of the proceeds from the Mutt Strut enable us to rescue and care for homeless pets in Philadelphia,” Levy said. “We house them in our no-kill shelters, provide medical care, spay/neuter, socialization and TLC, and then find them great families through our adoption centers or foster care network. Then, we go right back to the city shelter to fill their cages with more animals waiting for the same chance.” A rain date for the 11th Annual Mutt Strut is scheduled for Sunday (Oct. 15). To register and for more info, visit: pawsmuttstrut.org. Registration can also be completed in-person at the event. When you register online, you can create a personal fundraising page and ask friends and family to support your commitment to the animals.

Photo 1: There was a Bruce Willis sighting in South Philly last week. He was hanging around the 1500 block of Passyunk Avenue on Oct. 4 reprising his David Dunn character for the movie “Glass.” The film is scheduled to be released in 2019, and is a sequel to M. Night Shyamalan’s thriller’s “Unbreakable” and “Split.”

Photo 2: Speaking of M. Night Shyamalan, the director was spotted on 19th and Ritner streets Tuesday night doing some on-location work for the highly anticipated sequel that also stars Sarah Paulson, Samuel L. Jackson and James McAvoy.

Photo 3: Michele Stevenson (bottom left), executive director of the Philadelphia Freedom Valley YMCA, 1724 Christian St., accepted the donation of 1800 brand-new winter coats from Mary Lynn Alvarino, director of operations of the Auto Dealers CARing for Kids Foundation. The new coats were generated through the Foundation’s 10th annual Driving Away the Cold program, which provides brand-new winter coats to area children who need them most.

Some of the youngsters took a break from the eating to enjoy a variety of activities, including face painting. Proceeds from the event will benefit and fund Newbold CDC’s street cleaning program, which provides employment for 10 disabled Philadelphia residents.

The routine of mass murder

I

confess. I have watched only a few minutes of the TV coverage of the carnage in Las Vegas. That’s all. I’ve seen it all before. Heard all the arguments. Seen video clips of people frantically scurrying for cover amidst sounds of gunfire. Heard the screams of the victims. Heard the anguished words of those left behind. Heard the calls for prayer. Seen the flowers laid on the site of the bloodshed. Heard the pious refrains from the politicians. Heard the commentary by TV reporters using their most solemn tone. Listened to the endless speculation on why he did it (it’s almost always a white male for whatever reason). All of us can predict what will be said, who will say it. All of us know nothing will change. That soon there will be another gunman who decides to slaughter the innocent and then shoot himself. It’s all part of a ritual. An American ritual. These tragedies occur so frequently that they disappear from our memory banks with increasing rapidity. Will the Las Vegas killings even resonate by the time this column appears 10 days later? I avoid watching it, after the initial news bulletin. As much of it as I possibly can. Why? It’s not that I don’t care. I worry as much as you that one of my loved ones will be at the wrong place, at the wrong time, when the next shootings take place. But I find the entire horrible post-slaughter scenario an unintentional cruel charade. It is not only that the murders don’t make sense. It is that our political resistance to change gun laws is obscene. If America didn’t do anything after Sandy Hook when 20 children were slaughtered, I have lost faith that we will ever do anything. I reason that I’m better off watching reruns of “The X-Files. So, I tune out the “noise that inevitably follows the latest mass killings. I’m not against legal gun ownership. I’m not against hunting so long as the species being hunted is not endangered and all the hunting laws are obeyed. I’m not even against gun collecting, so long as the firearms being collected are no longer able to be fired. I’m also not a Pollyanna, who believes you can totally prevent the kind of tragedy that happened in Las Vegas last week. I’m not against the Second Amendment, although I wish that those who support a strict interpretation of that amendment were as interested in the rest of Bill of Rights. And as much as I abhor the complicity of the National Rifle Association in preventing reasonable gun legislation, I won’t join Keith Olbermann in calling them a “terrorist organization. But what I

Tom

Look No Further!

am for is universal background checks, closing loopholes selling guns, and while we’re at it – banning weapons that can keep firing bullets continuously. No, we can’t prevent mass murder, but we can minimize its likelihood. And if any or all of this makes it inconvenient for you, then it’s tough. If your inconvenience means fewer deaths, then so be it. Everything the shooter did in Las Vegas was legal, except the killing. He apparently used a “bump stock device that allows you to shoot 400 to 800 rounds a minute. The contribution of this mass murderer to this tragic aspect of American history is that he became the first (but certainly not the last) to use what constituted an automatic weapon. He set a new record for slaughter by a single gunman. And you know how much we are into setting records in this country. Our singular achievement in America is that we have made mass murder commonplace. Might as well stop the column and instead write another smart-ass column about President Trump’s misadventures. I repeat nothing will be done. Nothing meaningful will come of any of this. Brutal? Harsh? Fatalistic? Yes. I am usually an optimist. I usually side with those who believe that the arc of history bends toward justice, that things are getting better. Two steps forward for every step back. But right now – at this moment – I begrudgingly embrace the reality of life in America in the 21st century. I can exist in denial no longer. I can no longer believe that when it comes to guns we will choose sanity over insanity, logic over illogic, reasonable compromise over divisive partisanship. I am fully prepared to receive letters from some of you explaining why it is that I know nothing about guns and am just another bleeding-heart liberal. I have received those letters before. I know them now by heart. All that is left in the coming days is familiar chatter on the cable news networks. Why is mass murder the exclusive province of white males? A twisted chromosome? Why did he do it? As if by uncovering the motive we could make sense of it. What possible motive could there be that could explain raining bullets down upon the heads of people you don’t know and have never met? A bad day at the office? The end of a relationship? Lousy luck at the gaming tables? The color of the drapes in your swank suite on the 32nd floor? You can wait for Anderson Cooper to make sense of it for us. But I’ve already changed the channel.

Hungry for more?:

Here’s a taste of what’s happening today in the South Philly world of food and drink

By Bill Gelman SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

T

he South Philly food scene is buzzing. New restaurants and bars are popping up on the east and west sides of South Broad Street. We are talking about adding to a dining scene that has earned a spot in the national spotlight. Instead of focusing on the oldies and neighborhood institutions, here is a look at some of the hot foodie news from around the neighborhood.

Point Breeze is one of South Philly’s fast-developing neighborhoods, making 1260 Point Breeze Ave. the ideal spot to open Mattei Family Pizza. “We believe Point Breeze will soon be similar to what East Passyunk is now — full of quality restaurants and shops,” Mariano Mattei, executive chef/general manager, said. Instead of simply focusing on the basics — cheese, pepperoni, mushroom and sausage — the Mattei team is using a little added creativity to create a “one-ofa-kind” pizza each month. This month’s special is a pumpkin, pancetta and gorgonzola pie. The potato rosemary, tuna and onion and margherita have been popular with customers. There is no doubt that from South Street to the stadiums, there are plenty of great places to grab a slice or pie, making it a challenge for any newcomer. The Mattei family is taking an old-school approach to the pizza-making business. “We brought pizza back down to the Some may have noticed that Fond, basics. Sticking in the East Passyunk Crossing neighborhood, Rival Bros. Coffee is in the process of setting up shop at the former Chiarella’s space, 1100 Tasker St. This will be the third Philly location for owners Jonathan Adams and Damien Pileggi, with the other two spots being in the Fitler Square neighborhood and Center City. They’re targeting a late fall/ early winter opening. The owners grew up together in Bucks County, and debuted the Rival Bros. Coffee from their mobile cafe, a retrofitted delivery truck before retiring it in favor of the brick-and-mortar operation. In terms of setting up shop on the avenue, Adams and Pileggi are excited about joining the booming scene. “We chose East Passyunk because of the booming culinary scene and the great diversity within the neighborhood itself,” they said. In terms of house specialties, it would be coffee, of course. All of the coffee is roasted at their roastery located in the Frankford section of the city. The Derringer, a take on the classic Cortado or Gibraltar is popular choice. rivalbros.com.

Mike’s BBQ has been popping up at festivals all over Philly, Including the recent Newbold SausageFest. Owner/chef Michael Strauss, one of the owners of TapRoom on 19th, is busy putting the finishing touches on the storefront location at 11th and Morris streets. The space was previously home to South Philly Barbacoa. “I didn’t always think about a storefront,” he said. “I enjoy the mobile aspect. An opportunity came up, and I decided to make the leap.” Strauss added that he always loved the space that he hopes to have open the first week of November. The interior will have 28 seats, with rotating art procured by local artist Thom Duffy. The long-term plan is to add an outdoor area. Steve Waxman owner/chef of Trax Restaurant in Ambler, and his sous-chef Tom Groff, are a couple other people who helped out along the way by allowing Strauss to smoke in their parking lot and use their kitchen. Now it’s time to make Mike’s BBQ a part of the daily South Philly dining scene. “I think it’s the right time because I’m ready, Strauss said. “It’s what I’ve been working for, and I enjoy feeding people. It gives me joy! mikesbbqphilly.com.

Others are getting excited about The Thirsty Soul, where spirits and comfort food will be front and center. The new addition to the Newbold neighborhood is under construction at 1551 W. Passyunk Ave. Tim Lidiak, president of the Newbold Community Development Corp., is partnering with Billy Hines, a 30-year veteran of bar/restaurant industry, and landlord Adrienne Salvatore-

Marley on the project. Hines’ background in the restaurant industry includes helping to open the House of Blues in Orlando and Las Vegas. Lidiak describes Hines as a “big vision guy. Think allday brunch, New Orleans style - chicken and waffles, shrimp po’boy, catfish po’ boy and beignets. Like Mike’s BBQ, The Thirsty Soul team offered a sampling at the recent SausageFest where Hines went through gallons of his specialty punch. The space was previously home to a daycare and pharmacy. The cocktail bar with a full kitchen is being designed with a church theme, with a stained glass countertop and pews for seating included. Call it the newest addition to a transforming section of town as Brewery ARS, 1927-29 W. Passyunk Ave., and Second District Brewing, 1939 S. Bancroft St. also set up shop in the neighborhood. “The pricing will be compatible with the neighborhood. We are very much going to be part of the community, Lidiak said. “It’s probably going to be home to the second Newbold Blues Festival. The plan is for a late January opening, with outdoor seating being added at a later date. facebook.com/thirstysoulphilly.

HOT CORNER

Barcelona Wine Bar the avenue’s new temptation Tapas eatery has taken over iconic East Passyunk Crossing corner, adding fun and exciting vibe By Bill Gelman SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

W

hen people used to stroll down East Passyunk Avenue the sign for A Man’s Image could be seen from blocks away. Abe Mandel ran the store at 1709 E. Passyunk Ave. for 60 years. Some even described it as a neighborhood institution. Abe, at age 75, rode off into the sunset last year. A new sign has since risen on this triangular corner of the avenue, and it’s becoming a real conversation piece. It reads: “I can resist anything except temptation.” Yes, it’s an Oscar Wilde quote, and it ties in perfectly with the new place on the block, Barcelona Wine Bar. This sign is one of the first things people see coming around the corner approaching the Spanish tapas bar/restaurant. Adam Halberg, the senior vice president of the Barcelona Wine Bar restaurant group, said the quote describes the type of fun it brings to the space, creating a “That looks like fun” vibe. “In moderation, a little temptation wins. It builds for a fun experience,” Halberg said. Barcelona Wine Bar has multiple locations up and down the east coast, including Washington, D.C., Connecticut and Massachusetts, but it doesn’t operate like a corporate chain model. The South Philly space, which seats about 180 people, including the outdoor patio, is all about fitting in with the community vibe. It’s a place for families to enjoy an early dinner or to grab some tapas and a glass of wine before heading down the strip for a dinner reservation. Others enjoy the late-night atmosphere it delivers after most of the other restaurants have closed for the night. “It was more about the neighborhood,” Halberg said. “East Passyunk has developed tremendously in recent years.” When the striking building became available, the Barcelona Wine Bar team jumped at the opportunity. The raw materials from the old clothing store, such as the cinder block walls, were incorporated into the design. Add a little artwork, some planters from avenue

neighbor Urban Jungle and a kitchen, and suddenly what might seem hard to visualize transforms into a “wow, got to check this place out” reaction. Sure, there is still the occasional customer recall “the rack of men’s shirts used to be over there,” but this is now a place to enjoy food, drink and good times. General manager John Scott, who is a Bella Vista resident, may even stop you on the street to say hello, as being part of the community is a big part of what Barcelona Wine Bar is all about. Being a South Philadelphian, he enjoys interacting with his neighbors, whether it be participating in the recent Up on the Roof event at Bok or simply saying hello to people. “Sometimes we will be outside talking to people. We are welcoming and friendly,” Scott said. He also has a knack for remembering names, helping to build that strong neighborhood vibe. Saturday nights, like at most restaurants, is the busiest night of the week with more than 400 customers coming through at some point of the night. Weekend brunch, which is expected to be rolled out in coming weeks, will add another wrinkle to the busy day. A build your own Bloody Mary bar will be included on the brunch menu, along with the traditional omelettes and breakfast items with a Spanish twist. For now, lunch and dinner are the focus for executive chef Paras Shah. Pulpo, grilled octopus, is one of the more popular dishes. Being Spanish-inspired, paella is another of the house specialties, and falls under the to share portion of the menu. Those who visit Barcelona more than once a week will notice different dishes. Sometimes Shah decides to change things up, while others are based on an ingredient or two he picks up at the Italian Market. While the food and wine selections — many of which are imported from Spain — are the centerpiece of the operation, Barcelona Wine Bar is quickly establishing itself as the new spot to mix and mingle with neighbors. Following the words of Wilde, it’s hard to resist temptation.

REMEMBER WHEN

Leaving a legacy

T

he late Dr. Walter P. Lomax Jr. was South Philly born and raised. He started his first medical practice at 18th and Wharton streets back in 1958. College basketball fans of course remember John Chaney, who enjoyed a Hall-of-Fame career at Temple University. He spent his youth growing up in South Philly. While we can go on and on covering their lifetime accomplishments, it was last week’s news that has both of these retired individuals back in the spotlight. Both were presented with a Philadelphia Legacy Award last week at Philadelphia Independence Seaport Museum. The celebration was established in 2016 by Stephen Satell, as an annual observance to recognize people who have made important contributions to Philadelphia, and to strengthen awareness of the city’s diverse cultural heritage and its importance as a destination for visitors from around the world. The honorees and/or their families were presented with portraits created by Philadelphia artists Cal Massey, La Reine Nixon, Latiesha Carter and Beate Gibson. Chaney, his wife (seated left), children and grandchildren viewed his portrait at the event where he was honored as a Philly sports icon and championship coach. Widow Beverly Lomax and daughter Claire attended on behalf of their late husband and father.

Eagles climb to 4-1 in blowout win over Cardinals, 34-7 By Al Thompson NEWSPAPER MEDIA GROUP

T

he Eagles registered their first blowout of the 2017 season, exploding for 21 first-quarter points, then cruising to a 34-7 win over the Arizona Cardinals in front of 69,596 fans at Lincoln Financial Field. The win puts the Birds at 4-1 and in first place in the NFC East. The Dallas Cowboys (2-3) lost to the Green Bay Packers 35-31, and the New York Giants (0-5) fell to the Los Angeles Chargers 27-22. The Washington Redskins (2-2) were on their bye week. Carson Wentz enjoyed one of the best games as an Eagle, going 21 of 30 for 304 yards and a career high four touchdown passes. He was sacked once and threw an interception. The 24-year old hit Trey Burton with a 15-yard touchdown pass on the Eagles first possession. The score capped a 10play, 54-yard drive. The Eagles stopped the Cardinals, forcing a punt. Kenjon Barner, signed two weeks ago due to the loss of Darren Sproles for the season, took the punt back 76 yards, setting up a first down at the Cardinals 15-yard line. It took Wentz just three plays to hit tight end Zach Ertz with an 11-yard touchdown pass to make the score 14-0. After Arizona went three-and-out, The Eagles took over at their own 36yard line. Again Wentz made short work of the Cardinals secondary hitting muchmaligned Torrey Smith with a 59-yard strike that the wide receiver took to the house to give the Birds a 21-0 lead. Smith who has had a few drops recently, had not scored this season and had just 10 catches for 134 yards in four games heading into the game, talked about what it meant to finally find the end zone. “I’m not trying to sound arrogant or anything, but it’s not like I expected my TD drought to last forever,” Smith said. “I believe in myself, and more importantly, my teammates believe in me, so I just know that I have to take it easy, focus, make the first things first, don’t take off without the ball, just make it happen and be who I am.” Smith talked about the catch. “It was a post, I saw he was off and

Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz runs with ball for a change during the Oct. 8 victory over the Cardinals in which Wentz threw for four touchdowns. he was looking inside a little bit,” Smith said. “So I just made sure I crossed his face and that no one was in the middle of the field. I know that on that play it never really goes there, but with that coverage I know what he (Wentz) is thinking and I was expecting it.” The Cardinals scored their only touchdown of the day on a second quarter drive that went 10 plays for 75 yards culminating with a Carson Palmer 13yard touchdown pass to Jaron Brown. Ertz led the Eagles again with six catches for 61 yards and a score. Ertz, now in his fifth season, talked about Wentz taking another step towards being an elite quarterback. “He played amazing today,” Ertz said at his locker. “Obviously there are plays everyone wants back. I’m sure he feels the same way. But four touchdowns to four different guys is a huge stepping stone, I don’t think he’s thrown that many in game yet. He’s the face of the franchise. As he goes, we go. The most impressive part is he’s so even-keeled through the high and the lows. We love playing for him.” Wentz was asked whether he envisioned a start like that in his wildest dreams. “You hope for that,” he said. “You hope for something like that. I’m kind of the guy and I know this offense as we expect to come out after a hot start. I didn’t imagine it going quite like that,

maybe not quite that much, but the defense was rolling. We got the big punt return early and we just had the momentum and we just stayed on it.” Wentz was asked about his success on third downs Sunday, and how much more equipped he feels now for thirdand-longs than last year: “It’s just guys playing on time, playing in rhythm and it’s something we just take pride in,” Wentz said. “I think I mentioned it earlier in the week just how we put so much extra time into it both in practice and then in the film and meeting rooms as well. I think we’re seeing that pay dividends on Sundays.” The Eagles’ fourth touchdown came on an outrageous bomb from Wentz to Nelson Agholor that went 72 yards and saw the third-year receiver sidestep the defender twice before falling backwards (ala DeSean Jackson) into the end zone. Wentz spoke about what he saw on the deep ball to Agholor: “They brought an all-out blitz there,” Wentz said. “If you guys go back and watch it, Jason Kelce made an unbelievable play. He ended up blocking two guys so I shouldn’t have had the time to get that one off but he made an unbelievable play. And then Nelson did the rest. He made the catch and then made the guy look silly. Hats off to the big boys up front and then Nelly getting open.” Wentz talked about what it felt like seeing Smith finally get a touchdown

after struggling during the first four weeks of the season: “That was big,” he said. “That’s big for both he and I. We’ve missed a couple down the field, both of us have had our share of faults on those so to hit that one today, hit it on a third down like we did, that was a huge play in the game and just good to see. Good to see. I’ve never lost faith in him and it showed today. Just keep going back to him and he got the job done.” Former Temple standout linebacker Haason Reddick, taken with the No. 13 overall pick in the 2017 draft by Arizona, was on the field early and played most of the game. Obviously this was not how he wanted to return to his home stadium. “Most definitely,” Reddick said at his locker after the game. “We didn’t get the outcome that we wanted. But there’s still more ball to play. We’ll go back, watch film, see what we did wrong, what mistakes, what happened, correct them and get ready for next week. That’s all we can do, keep moving forward.” Reddick said the Cardinals were caught blind-side by the Birds’ play on offense and defense at the start of the game. “They were firing on all cylinders,” Reddick said. Reddick said he was impressed with Wentz. “I think the Eagles have a great quar-

terback in Carson Wentz,” Reddick said. “He want out there and played really well today.” Cornerback Jalen Mills said it is great when the offense gets out to such a great start and gets the Linc rocking. “It’s very big for us,” Mills said. “Especially playing at home, when the offense goes up like that, the crowd gets into it. And as far as us on defense, we start feeding off them, they’re feeding off us, so it’s very big for us.” Eagles head coach Doug Pederson was asked if he thought his team would be this good and this deep at this point considering all the things that have happened, especially with key players missing: “I know this about our football team,” Pederson said at his post game press conference. “And it’s been this way now for a year and a half: It doesn’t matter what happens with injury on our roster, the next guy — the coaches do an outstanding job of getting that next guy ready and prepared to play. Coming into this season, to kind of follow-up on the question, I think in the back of my mind you kinda — you hope and you want to be a good football team. Everybody aspires to be good football teams. But the way we’re doing it, with the amount of back-up players in these first five weeks, is a testament to the coaching staff and the players in that dressing room and the resiliency that they have to never quit and finish.” Palmer was 28 of 44 for 291 yards on the one score, He was sacked twice and did not throw an interception. The Cardinals registered just 31 yards rushing on 14 carries. LeGarrette Blount rushed 14 times for 74 yards. Agholor finished with four catches for 93 yards. Pederson talked about about where this team can go. “I think the sky’s the limit,” the second-year head coach said. “The sky’s the limit. And the key is just staying grounded and staying focused on our job and focused on the next game. As you know, these wins, these losses, whatever, are short-lived in this business, and you have to get yourself ready to go within 24 hours.” Now it’s on to Carolina. EAGLES INSIDER

I

Say hello to Nelson Agholor 2.0

t is as startling a 180-degree turnaround as we have seen in the (recent) history of Philadelphia sports: Eagles wide receiver Nelson Agholor was left on the side of the road in the 2016 season, discarded and considered a never-was in the NFL. He couldn’t catch a cold. He was that bad. And now look at him. Agholor has become the explosive, game-breaking receiver the Eagles thought he would be when they drafted him No. 20 overall in 2015. He had a spectacular 72-yard touchdown catch and run on Sunday as the Eagles destroyed Arizona 34-7 to move to 4-1, part of a four-catch, 93-yard day. Agholor now has 16 catches, 266 yards and three touchdowns. Those aren’t the numbers of a Pro Bowl receiver, but Agholor is fitting the role of a slot receiver and giving the Eagles exactly what they needed: A player who could get open with his quickness and his route running and his ability to catch and run with the football. Oh, and the ability to catch passes consistently, something Agholor didn’t display last season. “It’s just been a lot of hard work and a lot of fun that I’m having, Agholor said from a jubilant Lincoln Financial Field locker room on Sunday.

‘I have to be great every day. Every, single day. That’s my mindset. We’ve got Carson out there and he and I have great chemistry.’ – Eagles WR Nelson Agholor

Dave

“There’s not much more to it. I’m confident, but I feel like I’ve always been confident. I just think I’m enjoying the way things are growing and I want to continue to grow and keep helping this team win football games. The Eagles are on a roll, in case you didn’t notice, with three straight victories on the way to a magnificent Thursday night prime-time showdown in Carolina against the Panthers. Quarterback Carson Wentz hasn’t thrown an interception in three games and he’s got 10 touchdown passes against two interceptions in five games this season.

Spadaro

With a running game that continues to churn out the yards and eat the clock, the passing game is catching up with explosive plays. And Agholor is in the middle of it all after last season being benched, told to back off and breathe, and basically, in the minds of many, discounted for the future. He’s turned it all around. “I have to be great every day. Every, single day, Agholor said. “That’s my mindset. We’ve got Carson out there and he and I have great chemistry and we’re on the same page. It just feels good to be part of it. It feels good to win football games. With three straight wins, the Eagles are in firm early-season control of the NFC East. They’ve got

a potent, balanced offense. They’ve got a player in Agholor who has taken the misery of last season and turned it into current glory. “He never gave in and he never stopped working, head coach Doug Pederson said. “I’m proud of the way he’s kept his focus and played so well. In this league, you have to do it every day. He knows that. We all know that. Nelson is just out there playing ball and having fun. That’s all he ever had to do. The talent is there. A year ago, you had to wonder. Talent? Maybe. But would it ever surface? Now, Agholor is playing his game. Patience and hard work, in his case, are being rewarded.
