Mock-tober multiple choice test Melania Trump is feuding with Ivana because … a) She thought part of her marriage arrangement included shared custody of Donald. As Melania put it, “Why doesn’t she also have to spend time living in the White House with him?” b) Would YOU want people to believe that you’re Donald Jr. and Eric’s birth mother? c) Ivana never had to wear sneakers when she visited Puerto Rico. d) Her feud is with Ivanka, not Ivana. Melania is demanding that Ivanka look in a mirror and repeat after her, “Melania is the First Lady, not me.”

s part of its Monument Lab project, a public art and history project produced by Mural Arts Philadelphia, Marconi Plaza, Broad Street and Oregon Avenue, will be put in the spotlight on Saturday, Oct. 28 from 7 to 10 p.m. One of the high-

lights will be an interactive news kiosk that will offer a variety of free written and artistic materials and a light show. During the light show, put on by Klip Collective and called “Migration,” translucent planes of fabric and smoke will create a floating sensation, and viewers will be able to become a part of the display as the projections “wash over their bodies, symbolizing that once they enter, they are a part of

this country.” “The Saturday Spotlight in Marconi Plaza will be unique because it is the one time when the public will get to experience Klip Collective’s project,” Nicole Steinberg, director of communications and brand management at Mural Arts Philadelphia, said. “In addition to Klip’s interactive installation, the event will have a night marSee MARCONI PLAZA, page 7>>

Op-Ed They’re not immigrants

The article written by Sabrina Vourvoulias regarding ICE raids on immigrants (“Four days of fear, Oct. 4) was disrespectful to immigrants. Stop calling them immigrants. They are illegal undocumented criminals. My parents were immigrants. They came to this country legally with a sponsor, a job, a place to live, and did not receive one dime from the government to help them survive. My father enlisted in the Army, was wounded, a Purple Heart recipient, learned English, opened a business and still had to apply for citizenship to stay in this country. ICE is arresting illegal criminals. Philadelphia’s Sanctuary City is a garbage dump for illegal criminals. Mayor Kenney wants these people here for votes, not out of the kindness of his heart. An example used of a crime committed was “only an expired VISA. If a doctor’s license expired he would not be able to practice medicine. If your driver’s license expired your car would be impounded and you would be fined. But, it’s OK to have an expired VISA? This person knew the VISA was expired, but did nothing to renew it, because this is America and we forgive criminals for everything. The people getting arrested are not being “put in their place as she stated, but are being legally arrested for crimes probably more egregious than an expired VISA. Msgr. Hugh Shields, pastor at St. Thomas Parish, said “we are creating a climate not reflective of the values of this country. What values? Hiding criminals who bring drugs into our cities, creating gangs, robberies, murders? People who get health care, food stamps, housing, education, all funded by hard-working American taxpayers. Why would they renew a VISA or become a citizen through the proper channels? America has accepted and protected them. Americans can’t go to other countries and mix into society and become part of their community. They would be arrested or killed. We are being invaded by foreigners who think it’s their right to just move in without going through the legal processes. The laws of a country are what keep the country stable and safe. They are not abiding by those laws, and we are allowing them to believe it’s their right to live here illegally by protecting them in these Sanctuary Cities. Fran Gallo South Philadelphia

Does The Philly United Way have a Ferguson problem?

Lately, I have been concerned with the direction of our regional United Way’s leadership. The United Way of Greater Philadelphia & Southern New Jersey does not have a single person of color on its executive leadership team. Not one. People of color represent just 7 percent of UWGPSNJ’s

0DLO H PDLO

massive regional board of directors. With a mission to end generational poverty, you’d think the United Way would do better, and I know it can. If UWGPSNJ’s mission is to eradicate generational poverty, and its biggest beneficiaries are a largely black and Latino population, why is it that there are no people of color represented in United Way’s leadership? This is what some nonprofit experts call the “Ferguson Effect on nonprofits. I just never expected one of Philadelphia’s biggest philanthropic leaders to suffer from it. While 36.1 percent of Philadelphia’s youth live in poverty, black children make up 20.4 percent of that number with Hispanic children coming in second at 9.4 percent. Approximately 2,900 children in Philadelphia are homeless, 78 percent of them are black. More than 66 percent of black children live in a single female-headed household while more than 58 percent of Hispanic children live in a single female-headed household. Research shows that a child living in a single female-headed family is nearly five times more likely to be poor than a child living in a married family. Seventy-two

percent of the 10-18 year olds in the juvenile justice system are black. These are all issues that the United Way seeks to address when they ask us to donate generously. Three years ago, Derwin Dubose wrote a piece for the Nonprofit Quarterly regarding the nonprofit sector’s general lack of representation and how “the glaring disparity in nonprofit leadership bears a striking similarity to Ferguson. In Ferguson, two-thirds of the city’s population was black, while “whites served as mayor, five of six city councilors, six of seven school board members, and 50 of 52 police officers. At the United Way, the constituency it serves is predominantly black and Latino. Yet, UWGPSNJ lacks diversity on its executive leadership team, and just six of its 70 regional board members are people of color. I’m surprised as the UWGPSNJ states in its own core values that it has a “culture of inclusion and “seeks talented staff from all backgrounds. Yet recently, we watched UWGPSJ part ways with its only person of color in an executive leadership position, leaving the executive team

100 percent white. Despite its rhetoric about inclusion, UWGPSNJ is currently moving backward. This is alarming because so many of the people the UWGPSNJ serve are black and Latino. People of color have been effectively relegated to being recipients of charity instead of being empowered to improve their own circumstances. The corporate and private donor class should not find this acceptable. But all hope isn’t lost. There are two very important ways to get our local Philly United Way to turn it around. First, funders have to lead the way. Donors must demand nonprofit diversity even of the United Way. Secondly, UWGPSNJ must aggressively go beyond the rhetoric of inclusion and aggressively recruit people of color as candidates for its executive staff and membership to its board. UWGPSNJ is currently looking for a new CEO. Maybe it can start there. Otis L. Bullock Jr. Attorney and Executive Director of Diversified Community Services

hen talking about Philadelphia City Council, Anna Verna is a name that is hard to forget. She served as 2nd District councilperson for 36 years before becoming the first-female City Council president in 1999, a position she held for 12 years (the longest term served for a council president). When Verna retired in 2011, she was the longest-tenured employee in the City of Philadelphia – 60 years. This is just the abbreviated version of her career accomplishments, accomplishments worthy of special recognition. On Oct. 7, the 1200 block of South Broad St., where she lived for many years, was renamed Anna Cibotti Verna Way. Current 2nd District Councilman Kenyatta Johnson presented Verna with the sign. ‌ Speaking of famous South Philadelphians, Marian Anderson is one of the neighborhood’s biggest stars. The theatrical concert will begin at 5 p.m. followed by a celebratory dinner and entertainment starting at 6:30 p.m. The evening is planned to recognize the museum’s meaningful preservation, programming and exhibits in the memory and musical legacy of Anderson. “In the celebration of Marian’s life, we’re at a historic precipice of 20 years of our historical museum and her musical legacy, Jillian Patricia Pirtie,

National Marian Anderson Scholar Artist and COO of the museum, said. “We celebrate Marian Anderson for her music, her humanitarianism and her legacy. A journey worth taking Pennsport teen Emily Stephens crowned National American Miss Pennsylvania By Lindsey Nolen 6287+ 3+,//< 5(9,(:

A

t age 12, Emily Stephens received a letter in the mail inviting her to compete in a pageant, and from that moment forward she has chosen to pursue them. Five consecutive years of competing later, the Pennsport native’s dedication and love of musical theater and performing have led her to be crowned National American Miss Pennsylvania. While her latest achievement has been met with great excitement, Stephens has not forgotten about the long journey that got her to this point. In her first year, she came in fifth place, her second in fourth place, third in third place, fourth in second place and then this year in first. Although she has also won the International Junior Miss Pennsylvania Jr. Teen title in 2016, this year’s National Miss Pennsylvania teen 2017 title had become a goal. “I set my mind on that end goal of winning, and made sure to put in the effort to get me there, Stephens, who lives between 2nd and 3rd and Reed and Wharton streets, said. “Pageants are a lot more work than many people think. You have to practice the walking patterns for formal wear and fun fashion runway, practice walking in your heels, practice your smile and expression, making eye contact with the judges, pace, posture, interview questions and more. While each of the categories of competition is met with its own challenges, Stephens says that overall she believes it is her determination to succeed that makes her stand out. She added that although some may have given up after four years of not winning, Stephens has always made sure to give her all in everything she puts her mind to. “I am determined in many aspects of my life, like school where I am a straight-A student, captain of my varsity volleyball team, ranked Philadelphia varsity debater, long distance runner, head of fundraising for the literary magazine and more, Stephens, who attends the Science Leadership Academy in Center City, said. In addition to demonstrating her determination to be named National American Miss Pennsylvania, Stephens used the interview category to highlight her personality to the judges. In what she describes as “just a conversation, she utilized this portion of the pageant to express to them everything she has accomplished in her life and all she plans to do, while connecting with them on a deeper level. “Pageants have helped me discover my passion for public speaking, Stephens said. “My goals

Pennsport teen Emily Stephens. when it comes to pageants is always the same: do my best. Your biggest competition is always yourself, and if you get in your own head or own way it stops you from achieving goals. In achieving her goal this year, Stephens said words cannot truly describe how she felt after receiving the title of National American Miss Pennsylvania. As she recalls feeling a rush of immense happiness when her name was called out by the judges, Stephens also remembers gasping and crying tears of joy. “It was the perfect moment I had always dreamed it would be, she said. “That whole night I still couldn’t believe that I had actually won and every time I put my crown on I think about that life-changing moment. In preparing for the November national competition, which will be comprised of formal wear, personal introduction and interview categories, Stephens has already found a gown, filled out the necessary paperwork and is working to finalize her wardrobe. As the event nears, she will begin practicing her walk, questions and smile. “I’m a little nervous because it is Nationals and the competition is more fierce, but overall I’m just excited, Stephens said. “Of course, I’d love to be crowned the new National American Miss Teen, but as long as I give it my all, I know I will have fulfilled my goals. Stephens further noted she is excited to represent Pennsylvania, as she views it as very unique state based on its vast history. She expects the week of competition in November will be a dream come true.

LOGAN KRUM/South Philly Review

PFF artistic director Michael Lerman and executive director J. Andrew Greenblatt chatted about what to expect from this year’s festival running Oct. 19-29.

Something for everyone The 26th annual Philadelphia Film Festival promises a few hidden (weird) gems By Logan Krum 6287+ 3+,//< 5(9,(:

T

o the Average Joe moviegoer who doesn’t hail from our fair city, they’d probably say all Philadelphia has offered to cinema is an notable filmography from M. Night Shyamalan and Sylvester Stallone bounding the stairs of the Art Museum. However, anyone who’s ever gone to the Philadelphia Film Festival knows differently. This year’s installation, slated to run beginning Oct. 19 and through Oct. 29, will screen films at Ritz East A, Ritz East B, Ritz Five and Prince Theater. What can the scores of excited attendees expect over the 10-day period? “This year is built around oddities, said Mike Lerman, PFF’s artistic director, adding that where previous iterations of the Fest tend to include more crowd-pleasers, this year will have something for everyone. The festival will kick off with a screening of

the Craig Gillespie-directed biopic “I, Tonya, featuring Margot Robbie as Tonya Harding, a two-time Olympian who hired an assailant to attack a competitor. Shyamalan, director of this year’s hit psychological thriller “Split, will present actor Bruce Willis with the second annual Lumiere Award on Oct. 23 at AKA Washington Square. The directoractor team collaborated on Philadelphia-set “The Sixth Sense and “Unbreakable, and after Willis was spotted in South Philly late last week, it’s believed the pair have teamed up to film “Glass, the sequel to “Unbreakable, scheduled for release in 2019. If Lerman and PFF executive director J. Andrew Greenblatt were to sum up their feelings about the festival in a word, it’d be “excited. The two recently gave a few remarks about the upcoming festival. Here’s what they had to say: :KDW PRYLHV DUH \RX PRVW H[FLWHG WR

EH VKRZQ DW WKH IHVWLYDO" Greenblatt: That’s a very hard question. It’s a tremendous program, and I’m really excited for people to see it. I tend to default to the opening and closing films. I love “I, Tonyaâ€? and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.â€? There’s so much throughout this festival that I do love, so many great films, and it’s hard to settle on one. Lerman: I feel that way, too. It’s funny; I said I was going to make a hit list of the best films, but it ended up being the whole program. It’s a tough question to answer. 7KLV LV WKH IHVWLYDOÂśV WK JR DURXQG :KDWÂśV XQLTXH DERXW WKLV \HDU" Lerman: This year is built around oddities. Many festivals in the past have been built around audience crowdpleasers, but this year it’s more about hidden gems. The whole lineup is hidden gems; it’s a little odd, a little offbeat, it mixes up the tones, a little bit of adventure. That’s the idea behind it.

+RZ GR \RX GHFLGH ZKLFK ILOPV WR VKRZFDVH" Lerman: It starts with traveling the world and looking at the submissions and finding stuff we love. Past that, we work on negotiations, and what makes sense for the films, and we keep fine tuning and fine tuning it until we find the right fit. :KDW FDQ VRPHRQH ZKRœV QHYHU EHHQ WR WKH 3)) H[SHFW" Greenblatt: They can expect to see a collection of films that represent anywhere from around the world. Many of these films could be award winners at the end of the year at the Academy Awards. There are great foreign language films, a stellar crop of documentaries, some adventurous oddities; everything is in this lineup. You can’t go wrong with what you see – if you see something on the lineup that interests you, go see it. :KDW DUH \RXU IDYRULWH PRYLHV WKDW WDNH SODFH LQ 3KLODGHOSKLD"

Greenblatt: If we avoid the most common ones, the common answer is to say “Unbreakable (directed by M. Night Shyamalan, 2000). That’s my favorite movie of Shyamalan’s, and it was way ahead of his time. I also love “Twelve Monkeys (Terry Gilliam, 1995), and I’m a diehard Philly sports fan, so it’s hard for me not to talk about “Silver Linings Playbook (David O. Russell, 2012). Lerman: I really like High School by Frederick Wiseman (1968). I really like Blow Out (Brian De Palma, 1981).

,I \RX FRXOG GHVFULEH \RXU IHHOLQJV DERXW WKH IHVWLYDO LQ D VHQWHQFH ZKDW ZRXOG LW EH" Lerman: I’m incredibly excited and there’s such a diverse lineup. Thrilled. Greenblatt: My sentence was just going to be “excited.â€? I feel the festival is adventurous, exemplary of the times and something that needs to be seen. To check out the full lineup and schedule of ďŹ lms, head to ďŹ lmadelphia.org/ festival.

REMEMBER WHEN

They played the first game at the Spectrum

O

n paper, tomorrow will seem like just another day in Philadelphia Flyers history as the Nashville Predators are in town (doesn’t exactly generate the same level of excitement as the Rangers, Capitals or Penguins), but the date Oct. 19 is a significant one. Exactly 50 years ago, the men in orange and black played their first home game at the Spectrum against the crossstate rival Penguins. The home team picked up a 1-0 victory in front of 7,812 fans. Clarence Campbell, who was the third president of the National Hockey League, dropped the puck with former Flyers captain Lou Angotti and Ab McDonald of the Penguins meeting at center ice. Ed Snider was the man responsible for bringing the Flyers and Spectrum to South Philly. Tomorrow, the organization is honoring the late Mr. Snider, who lost his battle to cancer in April 2016, by unveiling a nine-foot-tall bronze statue of him in an open-to-the-public ceremony outside of the Wells Fargo Center, 3601 S. Broad St. Earlier this year, a portion of 11th St. was named Ed Snider Way. The event will take place at 4:30 p.m.

POLICE REPORT

FBI Task Force operation

On Saturday night, an FBI Philadelphia task force engaged in an operation to locate a missing 14-year-old girl from Florence Township, New Jersey, believed to be in the area of South Philadelphia. According to the FBI Philadelphia Division Public Affairs office, at approximately 11:30 p.m., two members of the task force, both deputies with the Philadelphia Sheriff’s Office, spotted the girl in a vehicle driven by an adult male. The task force officers stopped the car on the 3000 block of South 7th Street, identified themselves, and ordered the driver to shut the car off. The driver instead swerved away from the task force officers, hitting

one of them with the vehicle and knocking him to the ground. The driver then fled to the 900 block of Johnston Street, where he abandoned the vehicle and proceeded on foot. Members of the Philadelphia Police Department soon located him about a mile away, near Broad Street and Snyder Avenue, and placed him under arrest. The 14-year-old was not with him, nor was she in the car when it was found; her current whereabouts are unknown, and efforts by the FBI and law enforcement partners to locate her continue. The task force officer hit by the subject’s vehicle sustained an injury to his arm and numerous abrasions, but is otherwise all right. ¹ %LOO *HOPDQ

Pistola’s Del Sur adds fresh vibe to avenue gateway The Mexican restaurant fills the vacancy at the old Palladino’s spot By Bill Gelman 6287+ 3+,//< 5(9,(:

Pistola’s Del Sur

T

here is no doubt that 1934 E. Passyunk is considered the gateway to the avenue. It’s one of the first places people see as they make the turn off of South Broad Street — not just because of the giant sign on the side of the building. But in terms of recent history, the space has not exactly flourished. It was vacant for years following a 2012 fire that marked the end of Colombo’s. Chef Luke Palladino rolled out his Italian steakhouse concept in December of 2014, but a 2016 bankruptcy ended his brief stay. Funny thing is, before Palladino moved in, Casey Parker and his partners were eyeing the space. They are the team behind Jose Pistola’s in Center City and Sancho Pistola’s in Fishtown. Parker, who has spent time living in South Philly, wanted to be part of the hot foodie scene. Guess which spot they picked to open Pistola’s Del Sur? The latest concept from Parker, and partners Joe Gunn, Adam Anderson and chef Adan Trinidad opened last month — almost a year after signing the lease. “I always loved South Philly. I used to live at 21st and Snyder. “I would frequent [the spot] when it was Colombo’s. I loved the whole triangle concept. I wasn’t really looking, but you’re always looking “When Palladino’s left I made a few phone calls. I love that everyone calls it the gateway. I am so excited about being there. Like the other Pistola’s locations, the food and design have the feel of a fun and loud Mexican bar scene with roasted corn soup, ceviche, open-face quesadilla, tacos, flatbreads, octopus and cactus salsa and more being some of the highlights. “We will allow the menu to evolve as we see what the neighborhood likes, Parker said. Instead of having a big public relations blitz to introduce their newest concept to the East Passyunk Crossing neighborhood, the team decided to go all in from the start. “We do hard openings. We were doing painting and grouting the day be-

fore, Parker said, “We opened at 6 p.m [Sept. 13]. We are more ready for this one. Like Barcelona Wine Bar, 1709 E. Passyunk Ave., Pistola’s is keeping the doors open for the late-night crowd, open seven days a week until 2 a.m., with the kitchen staying open until 1 a.m. “We just would not have done it if we could not be open until 2 a.m., Parker said. Lunch service starts at 11 a.m. on weekdays and brunch is offered Saturdays and Sundays starting at 10:30 a.m. The bar/restaurant, which seats about 80 inside and another 60 outside, has several specials available during Eagles games, including $5 buddy burgers with bean pickle aioli, $4 pints of Dallas Sucks from Easton-based Weyerbacher Brewing (yes, it really does exist) and $7 freedom tacos (hardshells). When the Eagles are playing, the music is replaced by the play-byplay. Creating that game day vibe was several months in the making as the owners transformed an upscale steakhouse into a vibrant Mexican bar scene. Some of the materials were taken from an old church in Fishtown as they repurposed the wood and stained glass to fit the design. The draft system that features 10 beers on tap is rather unique with a custom built-in line cleaner. Besides Dallas Sucks, the draft list also includes Russian River Blind Pig, Sly Fox Orielly Stout and Allagash Hoppy Table Beer. Tequilas (not Jose Cuervo) and mezcals are also well-represented on the bar menu. “We are thrilled with the way it came out, Parker said. Call it the gateway to the next chapter of the Pistola’s brand.

ueen Village may be a very long plane ride from France, but chef/owner Peter Woolsey and executive chef Kenneth Bush enjoy bringing the culinary traditions of France to Bistrot La Minette, 626 S. Sixth St. The acclaimed wine region of Bourgogne is in the spotlight this week. “My in-laws reside in Auxonne, just south of Dijon, so the culinary traditions of this region are especially near and dear to me thanks to our annual visits there,â€? Woolsey said. “Chef Kenneth and I can’t wait to bring the rustic fare and extraordinary wines of this beautiful place to the table at Bistrot La Minette.â€? This special four-course prix fixe menu is $40 per person (with an optional wine pairing for $25). Escargots Ă la Bourguignonne (Burgundy snails

with garlic-herb butter and croutons) and Lapin en Meurette (red winebraised rabbit leg with pearl onions, button mushrooms and bacon lardons) are a couple of the featured dishes. This special menu is available tonight and tomorrow (Oct. 18 and 19). Call 215925-8000 or visit bistrotlaminette.com. ‌ Updating last week’s story on Barcelona Wine Bar (“The avenue’s new temptationâ€?), executive chef Paras Shah will be moving on later this month to pursue other ventures. He helped open the bar/restaurant over the summer after previously being part of the kitchen team at the New Haven, Connecticut, location. No word on whom his replacement will be. ‌ With the Philadelphia Eagles off until Monday night’s game against the Washington Redskins, a group of former and current Philly pro athletes is coming together for a good cause - The Barkann Foundation’s Hurricane Re-

The Birds are sitting on top of the NFC with a 5-1 record and are looking at three straight home games. Carson Wentz completed 16-of-30 passes for 222 yards, three touchdowns and zero interceptions. He was sacked three times and lost a fumble on the first play of the the Eagles first drive. Wentz was hit a number of times during the physical contest. Wentz rushed for 25 yards on six carries and LeGarrette Blount ran for 67 yards on 14 carries. The Eagles defense intercepted Carolina quarterback Cam Newton three times and hit him a number of other times. Newton’s third pick, with just over three minutes remaining, pretty much sealed the Eagles victory. Newton badly overthrew Russell Shepard and was picked by Jalen Mills at the Eagles 16-yard line. Newton, who was brilliant the last two weeks in road wins over the Patriots and Lions, was 28-of-52 for 239 yards with a touchdown and the three interceptions. He also ran for 71 yards and a touchdown as Panthers running backs Jonathan Stewart, Fozzy Whittaker and Christian McCaffrey combined for just one rushing yard on 13 carries. After trading field goals in the first quarter, the Panthers scored the game’s first touchdown thanks to three incredible plays. The scoring drive was initially set up by McCaffrey’s 25-yard punt return to the Eagles 43-yard line. Kelvin Benjamin then kept the drive alive with a diving 14-yard catch at the 16. Newton ran it in from there as a lane opened up and he juked his way past Eagles rookie cornerback Rasul Douglas for an easy touchdown. Douglas got some revenge on the next Panthers possession. Fletcher Cox, out the last two weeks with a calf injury, hit Newton as he was throwing. That resulted in a fluttering ball that Douglas grabbed at the Panthers 12-yard line. Wentz needed seven plays but finally passed to Zach Ertz down the middle for a one-yard touchdown to make the score 10-10 and that is how the half ended. In the third quarter, after a Newton interception on the Panthers’ first drive, Wentz hit Zach Ertz again down the middle for 17-yard touchdown. Because of a Panthers penalty on the made extra point kick, Eagles head coach elected to take the penalty that put the ball at the one-yard line. Pederson went for a two-point attempt and got it with a Blount run to the right making the score 18-10. The Panthers’ following drive stalled and ended

Tight end Zach Ertz scored two touchdowns in Thursday’s 28-23 victory over the Carolina Panthers. up with Graham Gano kicking a 20-yard field goal to make the score 18-13. The Eagles followed with a Jake Elliott 48-yard field goal making the score 21-13. With 3:23 left in the third Gano kicked a 46-yard field goal and the period ended with the Eagles holding a 21-16 lead. In the fourth quarter, Wentz passed to Nelson Agholor for a 24-yard touchdown to make the

score 28-16. With 8:04 left in the fourth Newton connected with McCaffrey for one-yard touchdown to make it 28-23. Both teams tried to mount drives but the Panthers ran out of time. Alshon Jeffery led the Eagles with 4 catches for 71 yards. Agholor had four catches for 55 yards and a the 24-yard touchdown pass, rookie receiv-

er Mack Hollins recorded two receptions for 38 yards before leaving the game with an injury and Ertz only had the two catches for 18 but both were for touchdowns. The Eagles now have a commanding lead in the NFC East. They already own division wins over the second-place Redskins (3-2) and the Giants (1-5). Thursday’s win also gives them a tie-breaker over the Panthers, which could be important for playoff seeding. The Panthers (4-2) lost more than a game Thursday as Pro Bowl linebacker Luke Kuechly left late in the first half with a concussion. He was replaced by David Mayo, who played well, but the Panthers will miss Kuechly and hope his latest concussion isn’t a career-ender for the 26-year-old Ohio native. The six-year veteran has missed nine games over the last two seasons because of concussions. The Eagles also may have lost one of their best defenders when linebacker Jordan Hicks left the game in the third quarter and did not return. His status was unknown Thursday night after the game. The Eagles were without starting right tackle Lane Johnson who is out with a concussion. He was replaced by second-year offensive lineman Halapoulivaati Vaitai, who had a shaky start giving up a fumble/sack on the first play of the game to veteran defensive end Julius Peppers but settled down. That was Peppers’ only tackle of the game. Linebacker Nigel Bradham had arguably his best game as an Eagle. He was all over the field. He recorded 10 tackles and knocked down two passes. Fellow linebacker Mychal Kendricks registered 15 tackles. Pederson talked about how his team has been able to win five of their first six games when four were on the road and do so while missing key players every week. “It’s a tremendous testament to the players in that locker room,” Pederson said. “I told them after the game that I haven’t been part of a team that battled through so much injury and adversity in the first month and half of the season and stay together. “The resiliency of this football team started to show last year at end of the year. They’re learning from last year on how to finish games and just the overall consistency, the leaders who are leading this football team, they’re sacrificing for each other, for themselves and the team…it’s a fun thing to watch.” Pederson can count that the entire Delaware Valley is saying the same thing right now. New Eagles connecting in the winning puzzle

im Jernigan had lost his starting job in Baltimore. He just wasn’t a good fit with the Ravens, in a three-man front that emphasized more read than reaction, and as he entered the final season of his rookie contract, Jernigan wondered what his next career step would be. Turns out, the Eagles did the thinking for him, acquiring Jernigan in a pre-draft trade and insisting that the scheme the Eagles had in place, one that demands aggressiveness from defensive linemen, would be perfect for Jernigan. Turns out, the Eagles were right. Turns out, the Eagles were right — based on a 5-1 start to the 2017 season, anyway — on a lot of the decisions they made in the offseason. Jernigan has been a perfect, game-disrupting fit at defensive tackle. Alshon Jeffery and Torrey Smith have added big-play skills to an offensive passing game desperately in need of them. LeGarrette Blount has been the power running game, with

Defensive end Chris Long, considered by many to be done and washed up after a season in New England, has been a valuable piece to the rotation on defense. Cornerback Patrick Robinson’s career never took over in New Orleans or Indianapolis, but he’s been a real find as the defense’s nickel cornerback. Add in a draft that yielded immediate contributors in defensive end Derek Barnett (first round), cornerback Rasul Douglas (third round) and wide receiver

Mack Hollins (fourth round) and some in-season additions like placekicker Jake Elliott — who has made 10 consecutive field goal attempts — and running back/punt returner Kenjon Barner, the reigning NFC Special Teams Player of the Week, and it’s easier to make sense of the Eagles’ 5-1 start. “Our entire roster is stepping up and that’s the way it should be,” Long said. “That’s the mark of a really good football team. You win games and you see that everybody is contributing. I feel like that’s the way it has been in this start to the season.” Yeah, it’s been a spectacular six weeks for the Eagles, who play on

Monday night against visiting Washington in a second straight prime-time game. A win over the Redskins would give the Eagles gulps of breathing room in the NFC East and demonstrate again how “for real” this team is. “It’s all about the NFC East. That’s the first order of business,” safety Malcolm Jenkins said. “You have to win in the division first and foremost to get to the playoffs.” And as spectacular as quarterback Carson Wentz has been, the newcomers have been just as instrumental in keying the fast start. The Eagles needed more playmakers on offense and they went out and got them in the offseason. The

defense had some pieces in place after 2016, but Jernigan is the kind of difference-making tackle the line needed to take some pressure off of Fletcher Cox. Robinson is having the season of his career. Long is a leader and a solid role player. This is a puzzle, and the pieces are all fitting for the Eagles right now. “It’s contagious,” Blount said. “We’re all feeling it. But it’s early and the key is to keep it going, keep working together and helping each other out. It feels good now, I can tell you that.” And it looks good, too. At 5-1, the Eagles are on a roll and are the darlings of the NFL.
