’m old enough to have seen every televised presidential debate since their inception in 1960. Heard all the charges. All the oneliners. Measured the Tom Cardella facts, the half-truths and outright lies. And voted in every election. Looking back, some of my votes make me proud, others not so much. But not one of the past candidates has ever made me feel as ashamed or sad as this time around. And no, I’m not into the false moral equivalence that I read and hear from so many folks. I’m glad I’m a columnist and don’t have to pretend to be neutral. Sometimes, you can’t be neutral. You can’t fool yourself into thinking one candidate is as bad as the other. You

budding buff thanks to recent immersion into the imagination of Edgar Allan Poe, Connor Behm regards the writer as a resolute relayer of frightening accounts and enduring warnings. Having helped The Mechanical Theater Co. to laud the literary lion through a Sept. 1 production, the actor will further the fear monger’s canon tonight and Oct. 27 through a restaurant-situated treatment of his work. “He’s never going to depart from our conversations about brilliant constructors of timeless stories, the 23-year-old said of the scribe whose eerie output takes on added significance when Halloween approaches. “I’ve become more interested in his tales

through these opportunities, so it’s going to be special to pull off this tribute given our setting. The Lower Moyamensing dweller and three peers will head to Society Hill’s Bistro Romano to give life to “The Raven, “Hop-Frog, “The Masque of the Red Death, and “The Cask of Amontillado. Fittingly, because of the plot of the final component, guests will engage in a wine tasting while the performers, according to a release, will present Poe “at his most decadent. “He was able to pack so much information into his sentences, which may have to do with his being paid by the word, Behm said with a laugh of the scribe whose seven-year stint in Philadelphia yielded such gems as “The Tell-Tale Heart and “The Murders in the Rue Morgue. “I love how effective he was in

doing that and in foreboding us about the complexities of our minds and the strength of our fears. Through the offerings at the Italian restaurant, which is situated in an 18th-century granary, the thespian will find himself thrilled to play the griefstricken narrator in “The Raven and the bent-on-revenge mason and nobleman Montresor in “The Cask of Amontillado while also lending his talent to the evenings’ other elements. Marking his second turn at promoting Poe as a paragon of excellence, the first having occurred through the three-person Entombed Alive celebration at Laurel Hill Cemetery, the upcoming endeavors will certainly guide Behm even more in appreciating the master of suspense and figures to inspire a few seasonal scares. “There’s definitely no denying that Poe is an icon,

Letters BVS `SOZ QV]WQSa

To the Editor: Well, I see I did get a response from Tom Cardella to my April 14 comments about his piece on abortion (“Letters We Get Letters, Oct. 13). I was understandably upset because of how the previous owners of the SPR arbitrarily deleted from the website Joe Myers’ pro-life letter, praising his mom for not aborting him, while allowing Cardella’s column approving Roe v. Wade to remain. I did not blame Tom, and I am glad his mother did not abort him either. We can see that the question of legalizing abortion even to the last moment of pregnancy has become one of the issues of this political season. Some are even re-

fusing to call the unborn child a “baby until he/she fully emerges screaming from the womb. A lax Republican controlled Congress has failed to codify the Hyde Amendment, first fashioned in 1976, which forbids the use of federal money to fund abortions except to save the life of the mother or in cases of rape or incest. Meanwhile, the present Democratic platform calls for the repeal of the Hyde Amendment, which would release millions of tax dollars to fund the abortion industry. The controversy, as Tom and I agree, is continuous. The worst thing we can do is pretend that abortion is just a normal decision, because it isn’t. The real choices

The eye of the storm To the Editor: Discussing the weather is an everyday event for most of us. Some complain about the heat and I am at the top of that list, while others cannot tolerate the cold. However, with so many horrific storms, the latest being Matthew, we have to feel so grateful and blessed that we never have to be subjected to this kind of devastation. We are very fortunate to live in an area that protects us from these catastrophic storms. I cannot imagine how these poor people must feel knowing that they have lost everything, watching their homes, cars and treasured memories floating in the street that has transformed into a river. Haiti has been demolished with over 1,000 casualties and counting. Their water is contaminated, causing many cases of cholera that will sadly bring many more fatalities. How in the world do they recover from this disastrous tragedy? We may not live in the most lavish and beautiful place in the world, and we certainly do not always have the perfect climate, but we never have to worry about severe tropical storms or any other severely damaging weather. I am so profoundly sorry for all of the victims and the long road they have ahead of them to repair their homes so they may someday live a normal life once again. My prayers are with the people who have suffered this latest storm, Matthew. Yes, we will still complain about the “Joey Vento’s beliefs motivated that sign’s placement. I guess that his son had a change of attitude, and there’s nothing wrong with that. Johnny Greco, 900 block of Annin Street

Iekj^ F^_bbo H[l_[m cold, the snow and the extreme and oppressive heat‌this is simply human nature, but we should never lose sight of how much worse it could be and remember to count our blessings. South Philadelphia is our home with old but sturdy brick houses that will always be tightly rooted in their solid foundation, so we should cherish our good fortune that we live in a city that will shield us from the eye of every storm. God bless all of the many victims who are suffering from the aftereffects of these storms. Debbie Russino South Philadelphia

olice ventured to the 2000 block of South Dorrance Street at 12:35 p.m. Oct. 9 and observed two men fighting. The complainant told them his supposed attacker approached him and struck his head several times with a firearm, causing an abrasion, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. He added that the two struggled over the gun, with the tussle causing the reported aggressor to discharge an errant round. Police arrested Sylvester Ellis and charged the Port Richmond occupant with aggravated and simple assault, firearms violations, receiving stolen property, possession of an instrument of crime, and recklessly endangering another person. He awaits an Oct. 25 preliminary hearing.

In the first matter, a complainant told police that at 11:45 a.m. Oct. 2, he was leaving ShopRite, 2301 Oregon Ave., when someone approached him and demanded money. The individual ended up pushed, strangled, and relieved of $13 from his wallet before the attacker fled in a gray Jeep Compass bearing New Jersey tags, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. Eight hours later, a woman was walking in the parking lot at ACME, 1901 Johnston St., when someone drove up behind her, lunged at her after exiting, and grabbed for her handbag, leading them to wrestle for the item. The aggressor fled with the handbag and headed off in a gray, four-door Honda. Detectives recovered video footage of the ShopRite incident and named Silver as the suspect, with a witness identifying him through a photo array as the perpetrator. Authorities stated Silver struggled with them on the 700 block of Winton Street before they detained him. Along with the two matters above, they charged him with committing a carjacking on 16th Street and Snyder Avenue and stealing cars on the 2100 block of South Juniper Street and the 1900 block of South Bouvier Street,

The support for the whole endeavor resonated with Blavat, too, especially since he has devoted most of his life to spinning the timeless tunes all over the area. “I’m thankful to everyone who loves and cherishes our music, the “Geator with The Heater said as the emcee before introducing Avalon and the others. “There are going to be people who will always know what we’ve contributed to the music industry, so, for them, today is a wonderful occasion. However, I want for younger people to inquire about these artists. I want for them to go on Google and learn about what we did. “You just always knew their stuff was going to be dynamic, Lydia Angeloni, a resident of Pennsport and an Al Martino devotee, said before the program, which included a block party and selections from DJ King Arthur, the son-in-law of

I’m really happy that Eric did such a wonderful job and that there are so many folks who want to keep our legacy going. That’s touching no matter who you are. Mural Arts Philadelphia’s October love for our environs also included yesterday’s 9th Street Stock Exchange Private Press Tour in conjunction with a participatory art project with input from Passyunk Squarebased curator Theresa Rose and will conclude Sunday through the unveiling of a mural honoring jazz guitar great Eddie Lang at Seventh and Fitzwater streets. “The remix mural is going to be a continual source of inspiration and another sign of how much we love this part of our city, Golden said. “To South Philly, I want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart. SPR

Through a May conversation with Blavat, everyone’s favorite radio showman, Okdeh began to consider the scope of the endeavor and set out to commend the depicted figures’ prominence. “We were saying ‘Don’t let it die,’ Pam Zenzola said of the love that she and peers from the Passyunk Square Civic Association honed for the original mural. “I’m not from South Philly, and neither are the others who lobbied hard to keep some form of recognition for these personalities, but that doesn’t matter because even as outsiders, we know it’s our history. The newly minted executive director of the East Passyunk Avenue Business Improvement District gushed when recounting that Avalon’s ’59 smash hit “Venus was one of the first records that her father bought for her. “I wore it out, Zenzola said with a laugh. “I think it’s still relevant, as is all of the music from that time. Along with eye-catching depictions of the musical heroes, Okdeh, who has created public art for 18 years, made sure to add images of high-charting records and included personal symbols for each star, such as a beach background for Avalon to tout his films with Annette Funicello. “This is my home, the singer said to lively applause. “When I reminisce about years gone by, I’m happy to think about how instrumental my time here was for me. I know that’s the same way that my contemporaries on this mural feel, too.

Well, fast-forward to present day, and his famous words are making headlines for another reason: The sign has been removed. After more than a two year investigation, encompassing 33 hearings, and at an estimated cost of $7 million and counting, the Republicans found nothing against Clinton. She testified for 11 hours before the last one, and the Republican-dominated committee could find no basis for charging her with any wrongdoing. Blaming Hillary for the death of our ambassador and several others is as wrong as blaming Ronald Reagan for the deaths of our marines in the Beirut barracks. There is the attempt to blame Hillary for the sins of Bill Clinton (your columnist called for his resignation at the time). She defended him against his accusers. Yeah, that’s what some wives do. The idea is I can call my husband whatever I like, but don’t you do it. Melania Trump was offended by her husband’s conversation in that Access Hollywood van, but she is sticking with him and still supports him for president. And Bill never consented to have Howard Stern call his daughter “a nice piece of ---. Besides, Bill Clinton isn’t running for resident, Donald Trump is. Some Trump voters call Hillary Clinton “evil. Trump says her heart is full of “hate. He has referred to her as the “devil. Really? I’ve tried hard to figure this one out. Some Obama haters described him as the “anti-Christ. What else but racism could make you think Obama is the “anti-Christ? Obamacare may be flawed, but satanic? In the same way, Hillary is described as “evil by some of the same folks. If you scratch a racist, underneath you’re likely to find a sexist. Maybe it’s the abortion issue that drives these descriptions. If abortion is evil, then the pro-choice candidate is evil. But do you really want to drape the pro-life flag over Donald Trump? He was pro-choice before it became politically convenient to become pro-life. Would you really be surprised to find out that Trump paid for an abortion for one of his girlfriends? Is there another tape out there where Trump brags about it to Stern? We’ve had demagogues before in America, but never has one gotten so close to the White House as Donald Trump. That’s scary. have to call it the way you see it. In a previous column, I had Uncle Nunzi calling Donald Trump a “spaccone, but he is much worse than that. Trump is much worse than just an arrogant potty mouth. If Donald Trump became president of these United States, the guy who just wrote a book called “The Worst President Ever (James Buchanan) would have to issue a revised second edition. Trump would make Buchanan look like a combination of FDR and Ike. If you, dear reader, intend to vote for Trump, I defend your right to vote for whom you choose. Perhaps your choice is not “deplorable. But I find it tainted by hypocrisy. As the poet once said, let me count the ways -Those who faulted Barack Obama for not saluting properly or appeasing our enemies are now the ones who not only excuse the gross behavior of Trump as just words, but excuse him for kissing the butt of Vladimir Putin. This is a good time to apologize to Mitt Romney, who correctly saw that Putin’s Russia was our number one enemy, while some of us laughed. Trump’s love affair with Putin is not only dangerous and alarming, but is based on his own self-love. Trump admires Putin because Putin has openly admired Trump. One thing the Republican Party has stood for in my lifetime is having no illusions about Russia, but much of its leadership and many of its voters have caved in to Trump and should toss their American Flag lapel pins in the trash. Trump voters counter with Hillary Clinton’s egregious handling of her e-mails. I offer no excuse for her actions, which may have resulted from her obsession with her own privacy. I do find it appalling to believe, as Trump and many of his voters apparently do, that the FBI director — a Republican appointee and a man known for his honesty and integrity, would not indict her for political reasons. The cries of “lock her up have seemingly encouraged Trump to promise that if elected he will see to it that she winds up in jail. The idea that in America one can jail your political opponent smacks of a dictatorship, not a democracy. Those who gleefully cheer Trump on in this regard should be advised that there is more to our Constitution than the Second Amendment. And please, enough about Benghazi.

budding buff thanks to recent immersion into the imagination of Edgar Allan Poe, Connor Behm regards the writer as a resolute relayer of frightening accounts and enduring warnings.

B?<;IJOB;I and no matter what the calendar says, he’s bound to unnerve you to some degree, Behm said of addressing the pieces’ infusion of paranoia and neuroticism. “You present him at this time of year, though, and he becomes all the more relevant, potent, and prominent. That’s part of why we feel so fortunate to give two performances of these unforgettable stories. I know I’m pretty excited. THOUGH EYES WILL inspect his acting chops through the Bistro Romano gigs, Behm had initially felt that orbs would fall for his writing ability when he was growing up in Chester Springs. Loving that he could lose himself in “private inner worlds, he devoted himself exclusively to putting pen to paper until he was 12. “Initially, I think a longing for attention was a huge motivator, he said. “The whole idea of being different people and channeling different emotions really resonated with me, and it became fun to ponder how much I could learn and what sorts of skills I could acquire. Eager to continue to contribute to productions, the Chester County product,

whose inaugural lead as peddler Ali Hakim in an eighth-grade production of “Oklahoma! stands as a lasting source of pride, yearned to understand exchanges between audiences and performers as well as the connection between authors and portrayers, with West Chester University proving a productive collegiate choice. “It had a wonderful theater program, he said. “It was there that I started to form perceptions of what my career could be while also furthering my knowledge of feedback and the always intriguing concept of inspiration. While he admitted he could have tried to pursue a different vocation, Behm believed other interests “lacked color and contended that vibrant interactions with seasoned professionals and lessons derived from missteps served to beckon him to bolster his confidence and go gunning for roles. Having selected West Chester over Temple University, he decided that his familiarity with Philadelphia would make moving here a logical step, and he has logged a little more than 13 months in South Philly, with West Passyunk being his first haunt. “There is a very strong acting com-

munity here in Philadelphia, the fresh face said of his tenure here, which has endowed him with solid connections and reliable wells of emotional support. “You hear all these stories about never being able to make any money as an actor or actress and about wasting your time thinking your efforts are going to amount to much, but this art form is worth the inevitable sacrifices you’ll have to make. Behm beamed when speaking of his affiliation with The Mechanical Theater Co., which uses historic sites and museums to present masterpieces that highlight “Philadelphia’s unique and ubiquitous history, its impressive intellectual culture as wells as its physical beauty. “The mission and the identity intrigue me, he said, noting that the entity’s lack of a traditional space encourages hires never to grow complacent and always to consider how they will adapt to a particular environment. “That whole sense of exploration and that belief that the city at large is our home are very rewarding. Behm knows all about adjusting to different locations, as he works for the Old City-headquartered Constitutional Walk-

ing Tour, a job that assists in his acting maturation in requiring him to memorize lines and convey action. He continues to write, with fan fiction as his obsession. Behm aspires to craft original material and is considering a play or a one-man show as the likely means to explore his creativity. No matter the content, even if it ends up being as pulse-raising as something from Poe’s catalogue, he wants the eventual piece and any others to possess the dedication to craft that his theatrical efforts have. “I’m beginning to figure out what I really care about enough to write something on, he said. “I’m glad I have that drive now because this is a great city to be in to explore your dreams. A>@ Show: Edgar Allan Poe tribute Performance dates: Oct. 20 and 27 Time: 7 p.m. Where: Bistro Romano, 120 Lombard St. Tickets: $45, Call 215-925-8880, or visit brownpapertickets.com/event/2627859. utumn makes many individuals concentrate on consuming more vegetables, particularly as components of soups, but what about feasting on fruits, too? Blueberries, while receiving ample summer publicity, are an any-time-ofyear delight and take top billing in this submission from Leslie McLaughlin. The East Passyunk Crossing resident noted “This is a really simple, yet tasty, dessert. As we prepare to part with yet another month and anticipate enhanced desires for baked goods as the holidays approach, consider calling on this recipe to sate tummies and temperaments.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Pour the melted butter into a shallow 1-½ quart baking dish. In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, salt, sugar, and milk, and pour the mixture evenly over the butter. Place the berries, water, and sugar in a bowl, and spoon the contents evenly over the batter, but do not stir. Bake for 40 to 45 minutes. The batter will rise to produce a buttery top crust. SPR

Bar One’s Pappardelle Fairly straightforward for home diners to duplicate, the dish, like its brethren, fills Rubino with hope as he and Barone add new titles and acquaintances to their names. “People crave variety, so we have to keep an open mind because there are places that have failed to survive at this address, Rubino said. “We want that to stop with us.

INGREDIENTS:

DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Season the ribs with the salt and pepper. Add the olive oil to a large frying pan, and place on medium heat. Sear the ribs on all four sides with the cloves until the latter are golden brown. SautÊ the chopped onion and carrots with the ribs for three minutes. Place the ribs in a large baking pan on a baker’s/wire rack. Top with the vegetables, and add the tomatoes, chopped basil, merlot, water, and base. Cover with foil, and bake for four hours, checking periodically. Shred the ribs with a fork, take everything from the baking pan, and run the contents through a food processor on pulse for one minute. Adjust to taste by adding salt and pepper if needed. Place the meat in the gravy. Toss with the pappardelle, and top with arugula and reggiano cheese. A>@

NO MATTER HOW confident the Griffins had become in building a three-score lead, their coaches instructed them to act as if they were entering the third quarter locked in a scoreless matchup. Roxborough, therefore, put a few more thoughts in their heads by returning the frame’s first kickoff for a touchdown. Sandwiched between two unsuccessful series, Holland recovered a fumble, and the local club would soon after force its fourth turnover of the gorgeous afternoon off a botched punt snap. Happy to help the opposition to look forward to the ride home, Bennett caught a fourth-down scoring heave from sophomore quarterback

Donovan Ragsdale, with a two-point conversion restoring the gulf between the squads to 22 points. “We’ve definitely gained a lot of belief these last few games, Holland said as fans waited to congratulate him for his frustration-inducing efforts. “It’s like we knew at the beginning of the season that we had to form another kind of family and bond. Like loving relatives, the offense gelled in the fourth quarter, with Cruse, Williams, and ultimately Bennett orchestrating a fifth touchdown celebration to complete the scoring. Yet another turnover allowed the Griffins to run down the clock and set up a quick congratulatory session between Pitzner and his troops. “We’re finally hitting our stride, he said to enthusiastic nods from the four dozen

teenagers. “You’re doing what we’re asking for you to do. You’re executing, executing, executing. Let’s keep it up! “We definitely can and look forward to doing it, Cruse said of the coach’s victory speech. “We’re a very well-prepared team, and at this time of year, when so many teams have a lot to play for, being prepared is what can be the difference between winning and losing. The Griffins will look to stay red hot tomorrow at 3 when they welcome Kensington to the supersite, 10th and Bigler streets. ecause they and their teammates from The Academy at Palumbo, 1100 Catharine St., tallied only four victories in the program’s first two seasons, one could probably have found a few reasons for Tahir Cruse and Ernest Holland to feel dejected when this year’s club began 1-3 - all three ending in a shutout. Rather than regarding the campaign as another long provider of frustration, the grateful Griffins players chose to believe more momentum would materialize. On Friday, the stars helped their Hawthorne location to grab its third-consecutive triumph, a 36-8 whooping of Roxborough “We came on the field with the mindset that we were going to be doing our thing, Holland, a junior middle linebacker, said of the win at the South Philadelphia supersite. “That’s who we are now - a team that knows how to play four hard quarters of football. The West Philly poduct and his peers crept above .500 for the initial time in school history in dumping yet another divisional foe. The Griffins have won four out of five league duels and have yielded only 24 points in the contests, an impressive stat that especially reflects the defense’s trust in what coach Scott Pitzner is preaching. “We’ve had a pretty good year, the former East Passyunk Crossing resident said ahead of the tilt of his group, which contains, through a co-op agreement, students from Engineering and Science and The Philadelphia High School for the Creative and Performing Arts. “Programs take time to grow, and I can say I am very proud of our progress. Pitzner, whose coaching resume also includes head duties at South Philadelphia High School, has overseen Palumbo’s maturation since the beginning and therefore has won the admiration of his charges, notably Cruse. “He’s all about positivity and always has been, the senior running back and strong safety said of his coach. “That’s what you

want when you’re trying to give your best. Another West Philly dweller, Cruse made school history Sept. 30, rushing for 225 yards in a 24-8 road decision over Strawberry Mansion. Oct. 7’s 68-0 annihilation of Edison, also as visitors, saw him rack up over 100 yards in the first quarter before Pitzner pulled his starter from the onslaught. As Friday’s game began, Cruse and his mates, knowing they had played greedy guests the previous two weeks, sought to keep their 5-1 adversaries from feasting on some road cooking. After a fruitless opening drive, Cruse showed why Pitzner believes the speedy ball carrier will eclipse 1,000 yards, darting for nine- and 10-yard pickups before busting loose for a 34-yard score. Only moments later, Holland showed his prowess, too, recovering a fumble and breaking the plane to give the hosts a 14-0 edge. “Those were such big confidence boosters, Holland said. “Getting touchdowns on both sides of the ball is big no matter who you’re playing. The cushion became 22 points when sophomore running back Demetrius Williams scored on a carry and senior wide receiver Kenneth Bennett snared a conversion try. “The energy in the first half was incredible, Pitzner said. “That was one worth remembering for a long time.
