Happy Halloween

H

alloween arrives next Tuesday. According to Wikipedia, Halloween has its origins in the 10th century Gaelic Samhain harvest festival. I’m guessing “Samhain” referred to Sam Hain, a prominent Scotsman who was thought to have originated the wearing of kilts. Unfortunately, Mr. Hain was arrested for public exposure while sitting on a bar stool in a small town named Butterscotch. Apparently, his kilt rode up a little too high when he was seated. Whether Sam Hain’s visible lack of modesty that fateful afternoon was deliberate, has been a subject of much conjecture through the years. Sam Hain, who had done irreparable damage to his neck because he’d jerked his head around every time someone near him said, “Same here,” died in a Scottish prison after finishing a hearty last meal of Finnan and haddie. There is much debate today about whether Christians should celebrate Halloween. Wikipedia notes that some Christians co-opted Halloween. They even attended church services to observe the holiday. We do not know whether they attended in costume. How did the practice of kids dressing as Jason in FRISee CARDELLA, page 11>>

ake a stroll by Vare Recreation Center, and it’s hard not to notice that there is something seriously wrong. The yellow caution tape hanging behind the new

fence sends a clear message for children and adults to keep out. The words “RECREATION BUILDING CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE” have created a sudden void in the Grays Ferry neighborhood, but this is a 100-year-old building that is in desperate need of some TLC. The Philadelphia Parks and Recreation De-

partment announced earlier this month that Vare Recreation Center, 2600 Morris St., will be closed for the foreseeable future due to serious concerns about the structural integrity of the building. The department made the decision to close the facility after receiving information about the comSee VARE, page 6>>

The label ‘criminals’ does not ďŹ t

I read with interest the irate letter from Fran Gallo (“They’re not immigrants, Oct. 14) in response to a previous article about the treatment of illegal immigrants and the implications for a sanctuary city like Philadelphia (“Four days of fear, Oct. 4). Gallo uses the blanket term “criminal to apply to all undocumented immigrants. Neither Gallo nor I are immigration lawyers, but any citizen should know that the terms “illegal and “criminal are not interchangeable. Having an expired green card or VISA is a civil violation not a crime. While it is true that some illegal immigrants commit crimes, the very fact that they are here without papers is not in itself a crime. It is disingenuous to claim also that undocumented immigrants are allowed “sanctuary in order to get votes. Only citizens may vote – the recent driver’s license/voter registration fiasco notwithstanding. I am also the descendant of immigrants who came here legally and obtained citizenship. So I understand the frustration of seeing others sneak in or overstay. But please, let’s avoid using labels that do not apply and enforce our immigration laws fairly. Gloria C. Halloween-themed fun on South Street By Bill Gelman SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

O

ct. 31 may be the official date of Halloween, but it’s never too early to start celebrating. The folks at the South Street Headhouse District have plenty of tricks and treats up their sleeves for children and adults of all ages as part of the neighborhood’s annual PumpkinFest taking place Saturday (Oct. 28) from noon to 5 p.m. at Second and Lombard streets. There will be circus performances, horse and wagon hayrides, live music, crafts for kids, seasonal bites, pumpkin putt-putt golf, a straw bale maze, face painting and costume contests. Pumpkin pie eating and jack o’ lantern contests are on the schedule, too. Businesses will open their doors for trick-or-treaters (12 and under) from 3 to 5 p.m. Festivities are free, with food, drink and shopping pay-as-you-go. Bring gently used winter coats, shoes and donations for Broad Street Mission to provide for those in need in advance of the winter season. As a warm-up to PumpkinFest, the Headhouse Shambles will host a trio of special fright night movies starting at 6 p.m. with the classic “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown,” followed by “Young Frankenstein” at 7 p.m. For the older crowd, there’s a late-night showing of the George Romero classic, “Night of the Living Dead” starting at 9 p.m. (zombies encouraged). All activities are

The news of where Amazon desires to build a second headquarters in North America seems to be generating as much buzz as one of President Trump’s Tweets. So many cities – Austin, Miami, New York, Denver, Philadelphia and others – are putting together their best “pick me” performance, but only one will win. Could it be Philly, more specifically, South Philly? The Philadelphia Navy Yard, already home to big corporations GlaxoSmithKline, Tastykake and Urban Outfitters, has been mentioned as one of the spots under consideration if Philly is selected. Stay tuned … South Philly native funny man Steve Rinaldi is coming home, well at least close to home. He is one of the comedians who will be performing at the Homecoming Comedy Showcase at the

Performance Garage in Fairmount (8 p.m. Nov. 3). Rinaldi has been traveling the country for the past five years, and has worked at the Laugh Factory and Zanies in Chicago and is currently living in Albany, New York, where he is a regular at the Funny Bone. VARE: Century-old rec center’s structural integrity sparks closure

<<Continued from page 1 promised integrity of the building from a structural engineering firm hired by Philadelphia Parks and Recreation to evaluate the facility. Vare’s outdoor spaces, including the playground and ball fields, will remain open and accessible, and continue to be permitted by Philadelphia Parks and Recreation staff. “The extensive capital improvement needs at Vare Recreation Center underscore the immediate need for Rebuild. Vare is one of our city’s most active recreation centers and a critical resource in an extremely underserved community,” Mayor Jim Kenney said in a statement. “Through Rebuild, we will be addressing decades of under-investment in our parks, recreation centers and libraries. Instead of being forced to deal with situations like Vare, our neighborhoods will have thriving facilities that will serve Philadelphians for generations to come.” Vare was the hot topic of conversation at last night’s update meeting, which started after press

time, held at St. John Neumann Place, 2600 Moore St., - the former site of St. John Neumann High School. 2nd District Councilman Kenyatta Johnson, Parks and Recreation Commissioner Kathryn Ott Lovell, Rebuild program staff and community stakeholders were all scheduled to attend and discuss the future of Vare under Rebuild, as well as the plans to continue community programs during the transitional period. Vare is a home away from home for Tyrique Glasgow, who grew up playing basketball on the outdoor courts. These days, the former South Philly Review Difference Maker provides more than 200 children from the Grays Ferry community and beyond with mentoring and programs as an outlet to stay out of trouble. Like the children, he learned about Vare’s fate earlier this month. “It’s a little disheartening for the kids because it’s more than a rec center. It’s a place they can come every day,” he said. “It’s a neutral ground.” Several of Vare’s programs are being relocated

to alternative sites within the Parks and Recreation system. The gymnastics program, which has 115 girls registered, has been moved between Murphy Rec, Fourth and Shunk streets, DiSilvestro Playground, 1701 S. 15th St., Kendrick and Temple. The after-school program (35 kids), arts and crafts (10 to 12 kids a week), anger management, cooking and nutrition (15-20 kids) and video game club (10-15 kids on Thursday and Friday nights) are some of the activities being moved to nearby Smith, 2100 S. 24th St. Vare, which sits on 3.6 acres, includes a pool, sports field, two ballfields and two basketball courts - all but the pool remain open as they are not impacted by the structural issue. The Sigma Sharks youth football organization is still using the football field 6 to 8 p.m. every night. The adult rugby league continues on Tuesday nights from 8 to 10 p.m. while the adult soccer league is still playing games 8 a.m. to noon on Sundays. In terms of the Young Chances Foundation

activities, the 30 children participating in dance, drumming and mentoring program will move to Wharton Square, 23rd and Wharton streets, on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The Cool World chess club, which has approximately 12 children, will relocate to the Wilson Park Senior Center, 2500 Jackson St., on Saturday mornings. Vare has also been home to the Young Chances summer camp, which services more than 150 children. It started out as a free program, but is now $80 for the summer, and includes trips and community service projects. The organization also has access to its community engagement center at 2703 Tasker St. “We are going to try and duplicate what Vare had, but on a smaller scale,” Glasgow said. “It still hurts the volunteers and the kids doing the programs, but the engineer came out and said that it’s not safe.”

CARDELLA: Some Halloween fun

<<Continued from page 1 DAY THE 13th get started? It all began in Canada where many discarded hockey masks always seem to be strewn about. Christians abstained from meat during Halloween, instead eating vegetarian foods such as apples, potato pancakes, and soul cakes. My Jewish friends expressed surprise that their beloved potato pancakes (latkes) had Christian origins. They assured themselves, however, that Christians did not use genuine sour cream. I will leave it to others more qualified to speculate on the origin of “soul cakes. Even in early times, the observance of Halloween included playing games an activity that challenges the stereotype of Scots being dour. Games such as apple bobbing and “playing pranks (Wikipedia’s term) were most prominent. It must be said that bobbing for apples is no longer as popular as it once was, mostly being confined to boring costume parties held by your Aunt Sally. “Pranks are played on the night before Halloween, known as “Mischief Night. Those “pranks include tossing eggs, keying cars, and, years ago, according to my father, placing bags of urine above the front doors of disliked neighbors so that these cranky folks would get unwelcome showers when they answered their doors. Note to Wikipedia – I believe a stronger word than “prank is in order here. Carving pumpkins to look like your ugliest relative also became a tradition. These modified pumpkins – called “Jack-O-Lanterns– were usually placed in a street-facing window in the home. Some people still observe this practice today, although the term Jack-O-Lantern has fallen into disuse. Much like the earlier story about the origins of Samhain, I think it likely that the practice of carving pumpkins was named after a young Scot by the name of Jack Lantern (the “O again being added over the years because of the mistaken impression about the spelling of Scottish names). Young Mr. Lantern was reputed to be a dashing fellow, in fact, it’s rumored that Mel Gibson is planning to portray him in a sequel to BRAVEHEART. Some mention should be made about the prominent role that pumpkin spice plays today in the observance of Halloween in America. It is

impossible to buy anything during this October – from pizzelles to body butter – that does not taste or smell like pumpkin spice. If you are unfortunate enough to be allergic to pumpkin spice, you should a) travel out of the country during each October and b) never listen to a song by the Spice Girls. I wish this reporter could explain the origin of our increasing fixation on all things Pumpkin Spice. But unlike most disasters that have befallen America, this tradition PREdates the presidency of Donald Trump. If you live within the circulation area of this newspaper, you will no doubt have discovered our practice of NOT observing Halloween on October 31st, the date the rest of America celebrates the holiday. In fact, around here, the trick or treating by our children is celebrated on any date in October, BUT the 31st. Neighborhood councils often meet in secrecy and agree on a date that is known only within that neighborhood. Most folks agree the floating dates for Halloween are necessary to protect the children. A small group of rabble rousers thinks that this strange practice may have something to do with ensuring that our children never come into contact with all the illegal aliens wandering through our neighborhoods, begging for treats while dressed as Pancho Villa. As it does with everything else in American life today, politics has cast its ugly shadow on Halloween. Some folks refuse to participate in handing out treats to kids, a refusal endorsed by the libertarian wing of the Republican Party. Libertarians believe that handing out treats only teaches impressionable young children to expect government handouts in later life. Democrats, on the other hand, while endorsing handing out treats, recommend replacing candy with kale to promote good health. President Trump insists that we greet each other by saying “Happy Halloween instead of “Trick or Treat, a greeting he says is disrespectful to the nation’s ideals. He claims that the term “trick or treat began during the Obama Administration. Presidential spokesperson Sarah Huckabee Sanders claimed yesterday at her daily press conference that Hillary Clinton’s e-mails often mentioned the phrase “trick or treat during October while she was Secretary of State.

It started with a dream ... and a ravioli machine Talluto’s celebrates 50 years By Bill Gelman

F

SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

or those of you thinking of making a later in life career change, the story of Talluto’s may serve as the extra motivation to take the big step. Flash back to the 1960s. Joseph Talluto, at 67 years young, decided he no longer wanted to work as a chef. So he stopped, sold his house and a purchased a ravioli machine. According to his grandson Joseph F. Talluto, who serves as vice president and COO, the sale of the house netted $7,500 and the ravioli machine cost $7,400. While many would’ve have used the money for a down payment on a new home, the elder of the Tallutos decided to lay the foundation for something much bigger – a business that would support multiple generations of his family. Along with son, Joseph A.M. Talluto, who still serves as president and CEO, they opened the first store in 1967, setting up shop in Southwest Philly. Fifty years later, the eldest of the three Tallutos and the original location may no longer be around, but his dream and ravioli machine are still going strong. The Talluto family hosted a 50th anniversary celebration at their flagship store in the Italian Market, 944 S. 9th St., on Saturday. “We just wanted to celebrate and thank our customers, the third-generation Talluto, who works in the business with his three sisters, said. “We are really genuinely appreciative of everyone who patronizes our stores, whether they come once or for 20 years. But the Talluto story has grown into something much bigger than a corner-store operation. After opening the Italian Market location in 1980, two years later, the family expanded the product line to include flat-cut pastas, tortellini and USDA meat products and began marketing in the food service industry, which included opening a 7,500-square-foot manufacturing facility at 29th and Ellsworth streets. These days, the operation is so big that the headquarters are now based out of a 50,000-square-foot facility in Norristown. By the way, those famous ravioli, which are still made with the original recipe, remain in high demand to the tune of more than 20,000 a week – more than a million a year nationwide – according to Talluto. In terms of the machine, Talluto sees no reason to purchase a newer model. “The new machines are exactly the same with

more bells and whistles,â€? he said. While the oldest of the Talluto family, with Sicilian roots, followed the work 365-days-a-year mentality, his followers have altered the business plan slightly. “My father wanted to balance business with family. We make sure we are home for dinner and go back to the business afterward, if needed,â€? Talluto said. With two kids at home, the Talluto products, including a variety of sauces, remain a popular dinner choice at home. “It’s easy and wholesome,â€? Talluto said. Excerpts from the 50-year story can be found on the tallutos.com website, but a quote that appears from Joseph’s son, who is now 72, may inspire others to never give up on a dream. “For years my father spoke of one day opening his own ravioli store. In fact, it was often considered a joke around the house. I am not sure anyone, but he, knew how serious a dream this was ‌ until the day he set forth to pursue it.â€?

Right place, right time, right at the top of the NFL By Al Thompson SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

T

hey say in life timing is everything. You’re either in the right place at the right time or the wrong place at the wrong time. For the Eagles these days, their timing couldn’t be better, at least through the first seven games. Quarterback Carson Wentz could not have picked a better time to escape the inescapable and make the unmakeable play. The Eagles faced a Washington Redskins team at Lincoln Financial Field Monday night that came prepared to take them down. But Wentz found a way in situation after situation to lead the Eagles to a 34-24 victory, a 6-1 overall record, and a 3-0 mark in the NFC East. For more than a quarter, the game was hard to watch. The Eagles struggled on offense and defense. The Redskins (3-3) got on the board on their first drive, going 66 yards on eight plays, that resulted in a Nick Rose 27-yard field goal. On the Eagles first drive Carson Wentz threw an interception on the fifth play. But Washington could not capitalize on the turnover. In fact neither team did anything offensively until well into the second quarter. When the Redskins took a 10-3 lead after Chris Thompson caught a sevenyard pass from Kirk Cousins, it looked like the Eagles had no timing at all. The home team simply looked flat. So Wentz couldn’t have picked a better time in the second quarter to chuck a 64-yard bomb to rookie wide receiver Mack Hollins that tied the score 10-10. Wentz couldn’t have picked a better time to connect with tight end Zach Ertz on a 46-yard pass to set up a fouryard touchdown pass to Ertz to give the Eagles 17-10 lead they would not relinquish. In the third quarter and again early in the fourth and with his team leading by just seven points,Wentz did what only what Wentz can do. He knew he had to take an even bigger role after All Pro left tackle Jason Peters left the game early in the third

Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz outmaneuvers Redskins safety Montae Nicholson during Philadelphia’s 34-24 win over Washington Monday night at Lincoln Financial Field. quarter on a cart with what looked like a severe right knee injury. First, on a third and nine from the nine, the second-year signal-caller seemed trapped and set for a sack, then somehow was able to shed his wouldbe tacklers and hit rookie Corey Clement with a remarkable touchdown pass in the corner of the end zone to go up 24-10. Wentz admitted he has no idea how he avoided a sack. “I’m not really sure. Honestly, I think the pocket just collapsed,” Wentz said. “I think everyone was still engaged with their guy so I knew I just had to get away. And no one really I don’t think ever got their hands on me.” Washington responded with an eight-play 52-yard-drive ending with a five-yard touchdown pass from Cousins to Jordan Reed and Redskins were back to within seven. Early in the fourth quarter Wentz again looked like he was about to take a big loss when he escaped to run for 17 yards, energizing a drive that ended with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Nelson Agholor and a 31-17 lead. “He made a great play,” linebacker Mason Foster said at his locker after the

game referring to the Clement TD. “He stepped up in the pocket, we were all in his face, he threw it up there and made a good play...you have to take your hat off to Wentz, he’s been making big plays all year.” LeGarrette Blount could not have picked a better time to rip off a 21yard run with 3:11 left in the fourth quarter and the Eagles trying to run out the clock with a 34-24 lead. Before that carry, the 30-year-old veteran had rushed the ball 10 times for a net of two measly yards. Rookie defensive end Derek Barnett could not have picked a better time to record two sacks on Cousins, whose offensive line had given up just eight sacks over their first five games. The Birds sacked Cousins four times overall. Cousins finished 30 of 40 for 303 yards with three touchdown passes and one interception. The Redskins offense was hurt when All Pro guard Brandon Scherff left the game late in the third quarter. Agholor couldn’t say enough positives about his quarterback. “I talk about how athletic he is, how he has a good arm,” Agholor said. “But his attention to detail, his film study, the

professionalism he has as a quarterback is second to none in my opinion.” Agholor said when you see Wentz pull off a play with timing that seems out of this world, it’s not an accident. “That’s from watching film, that’s from knowing coverages, that’s from knowing things so well,” Agholor said. “When he goes to the line, he checks like a vet, not just a guy in his second year in the league but like ‘I’ve been doing this for a long time!’ Then you throw a dime for a touchdown...so I get a touchdown! And I appreciate it!” Linebacker Najee Goode and Joe Walker couldn’t have picked a better time to come up with solid performances after Mychal Kendricks was deactivated due to a hamstring injury and Jordan Hicks left the game in the first quarter after the suffering an ankle injury. “It was huge,” Goode said at his locker after the game. “We practice and we go over the game plan because ‘it’s next man up.’ There are still some plays I wish I could have back, but we came out and played good we were able to make plays.” Wentz finished 17 of 25 for 268 yards and four touchdown passes. He

was sacked three times and threw one interception. His rating after the first quarter was 8.3. The Eagles ended up rushing for 127 yards on 33 carries. Wentz produced 63 of those yards on just eight carries. Head coach Doug Pederson talked about his team coming back from a rough start. “Well, I just think, again, it’s the resiliency of this football team,” Pederson said. “Yeah, it was a sluggish start. We’ve had a lot of time off and that’s one of the things that I sort of messaged to the team was exactly what happened. You have to try to guard against that. But the fact that they hung in there, battled, tied the game at three, and then scored a couple touchdowns again before the half and then just kept plugging away. They kept battling, hanging in there, and again, learning how to finish is the key in finishing these games.” Wentz said the key to overcoming their slow start was to not panic. “I think the biggest thing was we had a good game plan,” Wentz said. “They did some things early that got to us and we just knew we had to weather the storm. Keep our poise. We knew the plays would be there. We just kind of started clicking. Again, we knew we had to weather the storm, stay together, and we made the plays.” Stefen Wisniewski, who seems to have landed the starting job at left guard, marveled at some of the sacks Wentz was able to get away from, especially the play to Clement. “It was an unbelievable play,” the 28-year-old said. “They blitzed us a lot, especially third downs. If you have a quarterback that, when a team blitzes, he’s going to be able to scramble...they close in a defense when they blitz like that. If a quarterback can get through it...I mean it’s an unbelievable play, obviously a big play in this game, that’s the kind of thing that’ll scare other people from blitzing because if you see that, you’re not going to want to blitz the guy.” Because with Wentz, defenses never seem to be in the right place at the right time and the Eagles are in front of the entire league because of it.

Philly native film director discusses ‘Flesh and Blood’ Mark Webber appeared at the Prince Theater Saturday for the Philadelphia Film Festival screening of his fourth directorial project By Logan Krum SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

So, what was your favorite of your three roles? “I just love making stuff, man. I love making films. I work with the same team; the same DP, the camera operators, the same editor, the same producers who are friends, so it’s really cool to make this collaborative piece of art together. Filmmaking in general is my passion. It’s a lot of fun.

You grew up in Philadelphia, so what does it mean to you to come back and direct a film in it? “It’s great, man. Philly has informed so much of my work as an artist. I love this city, and I always feel so happy to come back. To make a movie in North Philadelphia where I grew up, it’s incredible.

Usually movies aren’t family projects quite like this. How did making this movie impact your family off the screen? “The movie is still pretty much happening in real life. The things we explore in this movie are steeped in reality and real-life relationships. It’s pretty trippy to sit and watch and know the story is continuing. My father actually is in the final stages of his life, and my brother’s father. “It’s a beautiful, reflective process when I sit and watch it. I think my mother and my brother have the same experience. They’re able to reflect on our lives, and that’s why I make movies. So people can relate to them and in turn feel a little more connected to the world.

The movie has already screened at festivals across the country. Does it feel different to screen it in your hometown? “Yeah. There are so many people from the neighborhood, from the badlands, showing up. People who wouldn’t normally come to 16th and Chestnut and see an art house film, and they’re also in the film. It’s a beautiful thing to be able to have people who are in the movie be there in their town to be able to celebrate themselves and their work.

Did it being semi-autobiographical make it easier or harder to film? “Way harder. I’ve been an actor for awhile, and it’s a lot easier to work as an actor in a traditional film setup. Using elements from your real life and real family members and people who aren’t actors is incredibly challenging on every level. But that’s what’s ultimately the most fulfilling and rewarding about the process, too. When you’re doing something different and unique and it works out, it’s even that much more fulfilling.

ome families like to watch TV, eat dinner or take vacations together. Mark Webber’s family likes to make semi-autobiographical movies together. Webber appeared at the Prince Theater on Saturday for the Philadelphia premiere of his film “Flesh and Blood. In the film, he, his mother Cheri Honkala (yes, that Cheri Honkala, who ran for vice president with Jill Stein) and his little brother Guillermo Santos play versions of themselves reenacting various made-up or actual events in their lives. What may sound like an indulgent vanity project on paper, isn’t. The family has many stories to tell, including their past struggle with homelessness, both Webber’s and Guillermo’s fathers struggling with health issues, Honkala’s activism and Guillermo’s diagnosis with Asperger syndrome, to name just a few. The film does a beautiful job telling these stories. Webber’s direction, writing and acting transcend the material. Webber talked about his movie on the red carpet moments before the screening began:

You wrote, directed and acted in the movie. Which would you say was the hardest of the three? “Directing my mom. She just wouldn’t listen to anything I said. She’s used to directing me, so suddenly the tables have turned. That was seriously the hardest thing. Even just trying to manage her here tonight continues to be the hardest thing about it [laughs]. “But she’s incredible in the movie, and it’s a huge gift to me that my mom and my brother were willing to participate in making this piece of art with me.

EAGLES INSIDER

L

ost in the hype of Monday Night Football and a showdown for mid-season supremacy in the NFC East between the Eagles and the Redskins at Lincoln Financial Field was a halftime ceremony inducting David Akers into the team’s Hall of Fame. Akers, who had a remarkable 12-year run with the franchise from 1999-2010, became the first placekicker inducted into the Eagles Hall of Fame. Understandably so. Kickers are flaky chaps, capable of going off the rails at any time. Akers was a model of consistency in his time with the Eagles, and his performance was recognized with five Pro Bowl nods, five AllPro seasons and a spot on the NFL’s All-Decade Team of the 2000s. Great stuff. What a kicker. Ice in his veins and all of that. The irony of Akers’ induction was that it came on a night when the current Eagles placekicker, Jake Elliott, entered the game with 10 consecutive field goals made, averaging 45.4 yards per kick. Elliott, no doubt, has helped key the Eagles’ outstanding first seven games of the season. But to think that Elliott is The Next Great One is to forget that Alex Henery once made 22 straight

field goals (in 2012), and that Caleb Sturgis had a streak of 18 straight field goals made (2016) and that Cody Parkey nailed 17 straight field goals in his Pro Bowl season of 2014. Akers, in his 12 seasons here, had five different streaks of at least 13 consecutive field goals made. Consistency, indeed, is key in the NFL placekicking game. “You have to be able to forget anything you’ve done before your next kick,” Akers said. “Make it, miss it, it doesn’t matter. You can’t let anything linger. You’re only as good as your next kick. For me, I feel like being in the league as long as I was

(Akers began his career with a one-game stint in Washington in 1998 and ended in Detroit In 2013) was my greatest accomplishment. “You’re always fighting for you job. You just want to keep making kicks.” Akers made 81 percent of his kicks in his NFL career. He’s one of the greatest of all time. The Eagles were fortunate to have him. Since Akers left, the Eagles have sifted through Henery, then Parkey and then Sturgis before he suffered a hip flexor injury and gave way to the revelation that has been Jake Elliott. How long will it last? “I understand what this job is all about,” said El-

liott, well aware of the unpredictable nature of the profession. “It’s a kick-by-kick thing. You just hope to find your groove and stay in it for as long as you can. That’s what I’m doing. I’m approaching every kick the same way and looking for solid contact.” It’s a lonely life, being an NFL kicker. You make a 61-yarder, as Elliott did to beat the New York Giants earlier in the season, and everyone wants a piece of you. Miss a couple of kicks, blow one at the end of a game, and everybody leaves you alone. Akers is the model of what Elliott wants to be. He’s just starting a long and extremely uncertain journey. Enjoy him for however long he keeps his groove.
