isiting Uncle Nunzi a day after the election was a wonderful thing. He was so happy, I found him whistling (his Tom Cardella go-to song is Tennessee Ernie Ford’s “Sixteen Tonsâ€?). The source of his new found contentment was understandable. The election is history. No more of those annoying political ads on TV. I was pretty happy myself. A big plus being I wouldn’t have to wince every time Uncle shouted at the television set about Pat “Tumorâ€? and Katie “what the hell ever her name is.â€? aving refrained from voting for 23 years, Teresa Cacia could not let the significance of the 2016 General Election go unaddressed. With four months of intense research on the presidential candidates complete, she ventured to Barry Playground Tuesday morning to end the hiatus, endowing Donald Trump with her support. The member of the 26th Ward’s 9th Division and other backers across South Philly and the nation have cause to celebrate, as the Republican nominee scored an upset

victory of Hillary Clinton to commence the countdown to his becoming the 45th President of the United States of America. “This election cycle could not get more interesting or crazy, Cacia said from the Marconi recreation spot. “Ultimately, after digesting all the ads and watching the debates, I had to go with him. I believe he’ll be a better leader than she could ever hope to become. As of press time, the 70-year-old business mogul, needing 270 electoral votes to finish his improbable run, had claimed 290 to his challenger’s 228, with finalized popular vote tallies from Michigan and New Hamp-

shire yet to occur. Few polls had given him much of a chance against the First Lady to 42nd President Bill Clinton and Secretary of State under current Commander In Chief Barack Obama, but when perceived strongholds such as Florida and Pennsylvania went in his column, nothing could deny Trump’s ascendency. “This result reminds me of athletic matchups where one team looks great on paper only to lose to an unheralded underdog, 39th District voter Douglas Stevens said Wednesday morning when fraternizing ASS 3ZSQbW]\ ^OUS ' ,,

hen pondering new challenges as she neared the end of her presidency for the Passyunk Square Civic Association, Pam Zenzola, as she had done 24 years ago when moving to Japan as a newlywed, wondered what role she could acquire to cater to her desire to be a giver. Last month, the 62-year-old secured an impressive answer to her inquiry by becoming the executive director of the East Passyunk Avenue Business Improvement District. “I’m just so much about community, so something like this is truly compelling, the overseer said from her office space that is situated not far from the gateway to the popular commercial corridor. “The more that people get involved, the more we will all feel better as members of this neighborhood. My time here, therefore, will be dedicated to building new bonds and strengthening existing ones. Zenzola gladly recalled her giddiness when learning of the position, saying to husband Ed “I think I really, really want this. With her beau’s blessing and intense familiarity with the district through duties performed for then-executive director Renee Gilinger plus residence within Passyunk Square, she set herself to filling the big shoes left behind and growing the 14-year-old entity’s reputation as a communal energizer. “I’m looking to put my mark, my stamp, on things, Zenzola said of helping around 160 establishments to excel. “It’s about drawing attention to their sites because there’s such diversity to what they offer, and it’s all in the name of giving people great experiences when they make trips along the avenue. The eager employee noted she does not feel as if she needs to reinvent the wheel, as the positive spin that circulates through the environs is already serving as a source of inspiration for her efforts, including contributions to Oct. 29’s Fall Fest and Spooky Saturday and Nov. 5’s Antique/ Vintage Market and Sidewalk Sale. To the Editor: A real solution is needed for our REAL ID woes. Imagine walking into a federal building, like the federal courthouse in Center City, and being told that your Pennsylvania driver’s license is not a valid form of identification to gain entry. Imagine trying to board a domestic flight, not just in Pennsylvania but at any airport in America, and being turned away at security because a Transportation Department-issued identification card is no longer sufficient proof of identity. This preposterous situation is soon to be a reality for residents of this state if the Pennsylvania General Assembly doesn’t

This once-unthinkable scenario is now an impending reality for our state, and it’s not due to an unintended consequence of some good-meaning legislation. In ‘13 the Pennsylvania General Assembly passed the REAL ID Nonparticipation Act, which prohibited the governor and state agencies from even attempting to meet the federal security standards. The standards set by the decade-old REAL ID Act are meant to ensure that every license issued in America, no matter the state that issues it, meets a consistent level of security. Despite myths pushed by some of its opponents, the REAL ID Act does not establish a national ID card, nor does it create a national database of our personal information. At the time, proponents of the nonparticipation legislation had concerns that conforming to the federal REAL ID reB y Ti n a G a r c e a u quirements would result in added costs Comment at southphillyreview.com/opinion for the state and a possible invasion of privacy for residents. As a consequence of their action, Pennsylvanians are now at risk of being told their identification cards are all but worthless for non-state purposes. While that may seem dire, Pennsylvania has an opportunity to rectify the situation before residents start to be turned away from federal facilities due to their ID – but we have to act quickly. I have introduced legislation that would repeal the REAL ID Nonparticipation Act, and a resolution that would urge PennDOT to cooperate in implementing the federal standards that are essential to complying with the REAL ID Act. The legislative session is drawing to a close but there is still time to undo this damage. Repealing the Nonparticipation @72 =4 @723A( 2Og ! ]T bVS A3>B/ B`O\a^]`b E]`YS`a C\W]\ :]QOZ !" Act and urging PennDOT to implement ab`WYS T]c\R Z]QOZa [OYW\U bVS []ab ]cb ]T 7\RSU] ]TTS`W\Ua Ob bV Ab`SSb the standards would demonstrate a good O\R EOaVW\Ub]\ /dS\cS >VWZORSZ^VWO\a VOdS PSQ][S OZZ b]] TO[WZWO` faith effort to comply with the law, which eWbV Âż\RW\U aSQ]\RO`g b`OdSZ [SO\a Oa bVS ab]^^OUS [O`Ya bVS bV may be enough to push back the date state bW[S bVOb e]`YS`a VOdS eOZYSR ]TT bVS X]P aW\QS '%# [OYW\U A3>B/ OQ ID cards would no longer be accepted at Q]`RW\U b] 4]`PSa bVS \ObW]\¸a []ab ab`WYS ^`]\S b`O\aWb OUS\Qg A>@ federal facilities. act quickly. As of Jan. 30, 2017, Pennsylvanians will not be able to use their state-issued driver’s license to enter federal facilities, military bases or nuclear power plants due to our state’s noncompliance with the federal REAL ID Act of ’05, a law passed after the 9/11 terrorist attacks in a effort to improve security. By ’18, assuming no action is taken to rectify this mess, Pennsylvanians will no longer be able to use state IDs to board commercial flights. Even a flight from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh would require a required a resident of Pennsylvania to produce a passport or other federally approved ID.

E]`R ]\ bVS Ab`SSb What are your thoughts on the end of the SEPTA/Transit Workers Union Local 234 strike? 7\bS`dWSea Pg 8]aS^V ;gS`a >V]b]a Pg BW\O 5O`QSOc

“I’m a union person, so I understood the situation. These are hard times, so I’m glad they’re back to work so that people can go to work and school more easily. Barbara E. Cox, North Philadelphia

“I’m incredibly thankful. We’ve been through this before, but this was grueling. Driving was absolutely chaotic for so many people. I’m glad that an agreement was reached. Brenda Brooks, North Philadelphia

If needed, Gov. Tom Wolf could convene a special legislative session to give the House and Senate time to fix this problem. Otherwise, this should be the General Assembly’s first priority once the new session begins in January. Elected officials who are critical of the federal REAL ID Act have options if they don’t like the requirements it sets out. They have the opportunity, as we all do as citizens in a democracy, to call on federal officials to change the law. They are free to work with federal agencies to find an acceptable compromise. They could even decide to file suit to block this law if they believe it is unconstitutional. But playing chicken with the federal government and putting the people of the state in the middle is simply not an option. Ignoring a law doesn’t make it go away. There are real consequences for not complying with this federal law and, unless we act now, Pennsylvanians throughout the state will soon be feeling those consequences. State Rep. Ed Neilson, D-Phila., 174th Legislative District

A vote for the columnist To the Editor: Mr. Cardella’s piece on Hillary Clinton (“Hillary, Nov. 3) was excellent. Between the friction of the election and the SEPTA strike, my nerves are fried, but his article helped me feel better and understand why I am voting for Hillary Clinton, too. Thanks SPR and Tom Cardella. Being a senior citizen, I can truly say the Golden Years are really rusted with the turn of events as the year 2016 comes to a close. Maddie Caputo South Philadelphia Comment on these letters or topics at southphillyreview.com/opinion/letters.

“I understood what the workers were asking for, and even had some arguments about their demands. Regardless of that, I’m happy that it’s over because it was putting my wallet under stress. Pangaea Saunders, 1300 block of Dickinson Street

ust before 6 a.m. Sunday, police arrested Keith Payne on the 2600 block of Dickinson Street for his alleged role in starting the blaze on the 2600 block of Manton Street, authorities said. The 29-yearold reportedly punched his girlfriend, also the mother of his 3-week-old child, in the face at 2:30 a.m., with the motive unknown. She retreated to the second story, waking Payne’s mother when she screamed on account of noticing smoke. The older woman said she saw her son applying lighter fluid to the kitchen and called for help, with police and fire personnel arriving at 2:45 a.m. to find the entire first floor engulfed in flames The women received treatment for smoke inhalation, with Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia treating the baby for non-lifethreatening injuries. Authorities charged Payne with attempted murder, aggravated and simple assault, arson, possession of an instrument of crime, recklessly endangering another person, and false imprisonment. He had had a status hearing yesterday.

BSS\OUS eOabSZO\R Two adolescents assaulted a 12-year-old cyclist in Girard Estate. At 8:50 p.m. Oct. 31, the complainant was riding on the 2500 block of South 24th Street when he saw a group of teens, riding away from them shortly afterward, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. One pushed him from his bicycle, leading him to strike his head on the ground. He tried to retrieve his ride, but another offender took a baseball bat to his left knee. They fled the location on his possession, heading through the Quartermaster Plaza shopping area. The victim described them as black, with tall, thin builds, and wearing all black clothing and black masks. The attacker snatched his iPhone 6, yanked his job badge from his neck, took his wallet, which contained ID, a debit card, and $50, and asked “What else you got? before he and his accomplice ran westbound on Oregon Avenue toward 15th Street. The victim described the first as Hispanic, in his early 30s, 6-foot-1, 190 pounds, and clean-shaven; and wearing a beanie hat, a gray hoodie, blue jeans, and white Jordan sneakers; and the second as black, in his early 20s, 5-foot-3, and 130 pounds; having braids and a beard; and wearing a long john shirt and dark jeans. Irvin Harper awaits a Dec. 16 status hearing for his Nov. 3 detainment in connection to the incidents. The 31-year-old, who had not posted his $500,000 bail as of press time, supposedly lured women in January and October with the promise of being able to help them to secure employment. Identifying himself as “Gotti,â€? Harper reportedly led them to residences, the first in Germantown and the second being his on the 600 block of Federal Street, and sexually assaulted them. fervently subscribes to is that state store wine is watered down. Is it Dom Perignon? No matter. If it’s sold in a state store, it’s just “state store wine. I was about to tell Uncle that our local supermarket is now selling wine, but I thought it best to get off the subject lest Uncle’s mood turn dark. Instead I turned the subject to Halloween. Uncle loves the American holiday. Asked about how he spent this recent Halloween, Uncle told me that he gave out torrone (Italian nougat candy) to trickor-treaters. He surprised me by telling me how he used to love it when I was a kid, and came to his door dressed in my Halloween costume. “One year you got a lot of attention, he said. “You came dressed as the Holy Ghost. “The third member of The Blessed Trinity? I asked. Uncle reminded me that at the tender age of eight, for some reason I had a fixation with the Holy Ghost. “You thought he didn’t get enough attention, he said. “There’s the Father and the Son, who get all the attention, but who ever talks about the Holy Ghost? That’s what you said. Uncle poured some of his wine from a prune juice bottle into his water glass. “The neighbors thought you were Casper the Friendly Ghost, but you insisted you were part of the Blessed Trinity. They were impressed, but I knew you were a bit of a show-off even back then. With Uncle you never knew where the conversation would turn and he suddenly brought up the subject of Chinese food. I think the appearance of a TV ad for antacid medication may have caused his abrupt change of subject. The ad featured General Tso’s chicken. Uncle can never remember the name of that particular general, and often refers to the dish as General Washington’s chicken. As one who considers himself patriotic, Uncle often substitutes “Washington whenever he forgets a proper name (the new Eagles quarterback is Carson “Washington). Inevitably when we get around to discussing Chinese food, Uncle wonders aloud about the utility of chopsticks. Uncle bows to no one in his respect for Chinese innovation, but he believes that chopsticks

are vastly overrated. This is one area where Uncle and I are in agreement. If there is one thing in which the western world has outpaced the Chinese it is in the invention of the fork. Historians tell us that the fork was likely invented during the time of the Byzantine Empire and perhaps even can be traced back to Ancient Greece. There is no greater pleasure, as Uncle likes to say, then the art of twirling your spaghetti with a fork. With the possible exception of handling peas, Uncle believes that the fork is one of the premier inventions in the history of kitchen utilities. I add that while it is understandable that the Chinese continue to prefer chopsticks for what may be cultural pride, it is downright pretentious for Americans to use them when dining in Asian restaurants. Uncle theorizes that these Americans are just “showoffs, quite possibly of Abruzzese descent (Uncle loves the Abruzzese, but is inclined to believe that they are inherently showoffs). I glanced over at Uncle’s new HD television set. “How do you like your new TV? I asked. Uncle told me he got a good buy on it because the salesman told him that the new ultra high definition sets are phasing out these HD models. Uncle doesn’t understand why anyone would need ultra high definition television. “I can already see the little hairs growing out of Jim Gardner’s ears is the way he put it. I noticed that instead of using the remote control, Uncle got up to change the channel (he rarely watches anything but the Weather Channel, except when Kelly Ripa is on. Uncle has formed an intense dislike for Michael Strahan and believes that he betrayed Kelly by leaving the show). “Why don’t you use the remote? I asked. Uncle explained that he gets more exercise this way. “But you only change the channel twice a day to put on Kelly Ripa and then to go back to the Weather Channel when her show is over. “Then maybe they should put Kelly on more often, he replied. hen pondering new challenges as she neared the end of her presidency for the Passyunk Square Civic Association, Pam Zenzola, as she had done 24 years ago when moving to Japan as a newlywed, wondered what role she could acquire to cater to her desire to be a giver. Heavily contemplating connecting

B?<;IJOB;I places and patrons to a greater degree, which 10 monthly Facebook-based business profiles have begun to do, Zenzola has vowed always to consider what will have an immediate impact on the encouragement of proposals from possible occupants and what will spur guests to intensify the avenue’s allure. While she has held her post for only one month, she is approaching everything as a savvy veteran might, owing, most certainly, to her love for everything South Philly. “I always need to do something, and I will forever want to give back, Zenzola said. “I remember my niece telling me that my energy matched that of South Philly, so I love exploring that sentiment every day. This is a huge area to promote, and I love that task. It gives me such a sense of excitement, too, to interact with such innovators. Things can only get better. THE NORTH PHILLY native nurtured an interest in philanthropy as a girl and came of age in the city’s Northeast section. she commenced a 20-year career with gas titan ARCO, with her departure being one of three major life events that 1992 would bring her. “What a year! Zenzola exclaimed of the stretch of time that also saw her become a bride and head to Tokyo for her partner’s employment obligations to ARCO. “It definitely signalled a transformation for how I look at the world and how much I felt I could contribute to the bigger picture. Initial doubts about how she would find her way bowed to the belief that she would eagerly involve herself with whatever endeavors would become apparent, with the Tokyo English Hot Line sustaining her motivation. Japan’s capital city proved “so orderly, and she came to appreciate so many aspects of the culture, including locals’ upholding of “the wa, or “the harmony, that implies peaceful unity and conformity among a social group. Life in Hong Kong, which the Zenzolas began toward the end of ’93, proved quite the opposite, as citizens found themselves more open to consider the best implementation

of their talents. For the owner of constantly evolving compassion, that meant assisting children without families and pregnant adolescents. “That got me hooked, Zenzola said of how her work with Mother’s Voice enhanced her attraction to being an advocate for believing in the value of everyone’s role in a society’s overall upkeep and evolution. “I’d already understood the needs of others, but that was a huge opportunity to push for real change. An affinity for comprehending the depth of her possible immersion into Asian culture also led her to lead the league of women voters in Hong Kong and to serve as the president for the territory’s American Women’s Association. She and Edward returned to the United States in 2000, settling in Horsham, where she also busied herself with community-based undertakings. “I eventually grew to miss the hustle and bustle of city life, Zenzola said of a yearning that helped her to become a South Philly resident eight years ago. “There’s so much to experience in such

a setting, and I’m happy to be back and thrilled to be in South Philly. She desired an immediate relationship with the Passyunk Square Civic Association and began as its secretary, smiling when recalling her “I have to fire myself admission to peers when realizing she felt she had not done a decent job. Becoming its president in ’12, she loved the responsibility of improving the quality of life for residents from Sixth to Broad streets and Tasker Street to Washington Avenue, with that devotion dovetailing with unwavering interest in helping East Passyunk Avenue’s operations to become beacons to make Zenzola eager for every meeting, including those related to the budget. “Oh, those, she laughed. “Seriously, though, everything is wonderful. I love the baptism by fire because it means an even brighter future for these locations in that I’m going to be on my toes every time someone needs something. A>@

DON RUSSELL

Yo, chill Anthony B! Breaking down this brash beer remark from a well-traveled boozehound.

“I was in San Francisco and I was desperate for beer, and I walked into this place. I thought it was an old bar. I sat down, and I looked up, and I noticed there was a wide selection of beers I’d never heard of. Which is fine. OK, I’m in some sort of brew pub. What’s good? But I looked around: the entire place was filled with people sitting there with five small glasses in front of them, filled with different beers, taking notes. This is not a bar. This is ... “Invasion of the Body Snatchers.â€? This is wrong. This is not what a bar is about. A bar is to go to get a little bit buzzed, and pleasantly derange the senses, and have a good time, and interact with other people, or make bad decisions, or feel bad about your life. It’s not to sit there fucking analyzing beer. It’s antithetical.â€? But, but, but‌! The beer geeks harrumphed. What kind of professional chef—one who presumably cares a great deal when it comes to the flavor of food— could belittle handcrafted beer? If it tastes great, isn’t every sip worthy of savoring? And yet, Bourdain makes a good point: beer has gotten a bit too special.

The rare releases, the corked bottles, the precious glassware, the talk about vintage and terroir, the incessant fixation on ratings, the rising prices—the winification of beer is real and it’s here. What happened to just ordering a cold pint and guzzling the damn thing? Indeed, a bar is a place to get a buzz on. It’s not a test-tube laboratory. No one would drink glass after glass of beer (no matter how good it tastes) if it didn’t contain alcohol. We’re there to feel the music, the conversation, the game, the vibe, all enhanced by the bliss in your brain. It’s a visceral experience, not a academic learning opportunity. Yes, Bourdain makes a good point. But let’s not forget that this is the same guy who once declared that the best cheesesteak in America is made (gasp) in Camden. On a kaiser roll... with poppy seeds. He says things like that. He’s a provocateur. Worse, he’s a curmudgeon. A grump. If he was from Philly, he’d totally be that grim-faced, gray-haired guy sitting by himself at the end of the bar, nursing a bottle, talking to no one in particular, grousing about the damn Eagles’ passing game. He’s a 60-year-old straight white man in a post-Kanye world, unwilling or unable to accept that not everybody is the same as him. Which is ironic, because bars are, at their best, melting pots. A suit and tie sitting next to a pierced nose, a Hillary voter having it out with a libertarian from Temple. Damn, Anthony, did you ever notice there’s more than one brand of bourbon on the shelf? Wagging a finger at wonky beer nerds pondering five glasses at a time is particularly bullheaded because they’re the one reason American bars are so compelling today. The stunning variety of styles, the multitude of tap handles have brought new excitement to the bar scene and face it, geeky beer appreciation is good for bar business. Yes, sometimes all we want is a cold beer. No analysis, just a buzz. But suggesting there is a right way or a wrong way to enjoy that buzz, well, that’s just antithetical. SPR Twitter: @Beer_RADAR

ell aware of the growing number of over-the-top libation locations, Tom Ball and Marlise Tkaczuk did not want to waste their energy conforming to the call for extravagance when fueling their concept for “a nice neighborhood bar. Come Sunday, the husband and wife will mark their sixth-month anniversary as the brains behind The Black Cat Tavern on 12th, an adored addition to Lower Moyamensing. “We just want to be a pleasant fit for the community, Tkaczuk said of the site. She and her spouse came to occupy the space after having severe financial struggles. Using “If you can’t find a job, make a job as a guiding principle, they took the leap as a reflection of their trust in being able to helm a cozy spot where patrons could order fulfilling food and drinks and appreciate art, which occurs through juried exhibitions, a product of Tkaczuk’s second line of work as program coordinator for continuing education at Moore College of Art & Design. Many watering holes, frankly, could not care less about food options, but at the Black Cat Tavern, the owners value victuals and offer “sort of, kind of a tribute to Polish dishes. Tkaczuk and Ball enlist Tom Kulisek as their chef for the location’s menu, which includes a favorite among Kulicek’s and Tkaczuk’s ancestors, pierogies, leading to the sharing of the potato and cheese option’s recipe. “I definitely hope to do her perpetual justice in having these, Tkaczuk said of her grandmother, “the pierogi mastermind. “No matter how much we will talk about having more food, we can’t abandon a standout item, and that’s what we have here. DOUGH INGREDIENTS

DOUGH/FILLING DIRECTIONS Mix the flour and salt. Place mound of flour/salt mix on table, and make an indentation (well) in center. Add the eggs and sour cream in well, and mix together with hands. Kneed dough on floured surface until soft and smooth (approximately 10 minutes). Let rest for 20 minutes. Peel the potatoes, and add to a large pot of boiling water. Cook until soft. Remove from heat, drain water, and mash. Let potatoes cool. Once potatoes have cooled, add cheese, salt, scallions. Mix until all ingredients are fully incorporated. Roll out the dough until about 1/2-inch thick. Cut out dough rounds with a cookie cutter or a drinking glass (about 3-4 inches in diameter). Add a spoonful of potato filling in middle of dough round. Fold dough over into the familiar half-moon pierogi shape. Seal edges by pressing lightly with a fork all the way around edges. Bring a large pot of salted water to a gentle boil. Add approximately six pierogis at a time, and cook them for about five minutes. When done, remove from boiling water with a slotted spoon and place in ice water to cool quickly. When ready to serve, pan fry the pierogis in about a tablespoon of butter with some sliced onions. SPR
