iven their stellar status as melodious merrymakers on New Year’s Day, one might not be fully aware of the projects and endeavors that members of Mummers clubs see as a necessity for community growth. On Saturday, constituents from 38 of the revered revelers’ entities convened at the headquarters of Bill McIntyre’s Shooting Stars, 1931-33 S. Third St.,

to further their altruistic fervor, collecting and delivering wish list items to The Philadelphia Veterans Comfort House. “We, as Mummers, are all one huge family, organizer Billy Mulligan said shortly after the 8 a.m. start at the Pennsport location. “We recognize what has made this country strong, too, and there’s no denying how important the defenders of our free-

ito van Reigersberg shaved. In any other city, that probably wouldn’t mean a damn thing. But here in Philly, where “Martha Graham Cracker (van Reigersberg’s drag alter ego) is king, er, queen, it’s big news. For the past 11 years, the Passyunk Square dweller has been inextricably tied to the Martha character and live performance cabaret he created. But now, it’s a new wig and another woman’s stilettos to join the cast of “The Legend of Miss Georgia McBride, which runs through Dec. 4 at the Arden Theatre Co. Much of Philly knows van Reigersberg as the oversized and unshaven Graham, belting out new arrange-

ments of familiar songs with her backup band of Philly notables at the Queen Village-situated L’Etage. So this creative leap into the arms (and legs) of a different woman – Miss Tracy Mills to be exact – has been an adventure for the co-founder of the Pig Iron Theatre Co. in Northern Liberties. “The Legend of Miss Georgia McBride finds van Reigersberg playing a role that can’t be too far afield for him – veteran queen. His character, Mills, takes a young Elvis impersonator, Casey, under her sequined wings when in a pinch, the latter needs to try out drag to save his place in a nightclub’s performance rotation. Hilarity, angst, gender confusion, and exploration of what it truly means to be a drag queen ensue, along with fabulously elaborate costume performances. The story premiered in 2014 in New York, right around the same time van Reigersberg had heard about

the Matthew Lopez play and thought it sounded fun. Terry Nolen, the Arden’s artistic producing director, thought van Reigersberg would be perfect for the role and approached him to ask him to take on the character. With Pig Iron veteran Emmanuelle Delpech directing, the answer seemed obvious. “There are some differences in the characters, van Reigersberg said, “but I like to think of Tracy as Martha’s southern cousin. There’s a line I say about being afraid I’ll have to work at Walmart, so there’s a little more desperation than we’re used to seeing with Martha; [definitely] a little more at stake for this character. Beyond the emotional differences in these figures, van Reigersberg also had to adjust to the physical challenges that come along with playing Mills, with this being the first drag role he has shaved for in many years. “With Martha, there’s confusion, the audience loves

To our Readers: In September 1994, I started my sophomore year at St. John Neumann High School and looked forward to many aspects of it, including having Mr. Bill Feeley as my Honors English teacher. Being a Southwest Philly resident, I was aware of Mr. Feeley’s deep connection to our community and his link to my family, so armed with that bond and familiarity and possessing a budding interest in American literature, I enjoyed knowing that each day would start with 42 minutes in his presence. This amazing instructor and friend died November 14 at the age of 73, with

obittree.com stating that he “molded thousands of our youth during his 45year calling as a teacher at Bishop John Neumann and then Saints Neumann and Goretti High School. I consider myself very fortunate to have been among those impressionable teenagers and easily, upon learning of his passing, thought of a dozen moments from our classroom time that will forever resonate with me. Here’s hoping that angels will be his next set of enthralled pupils.

Mario’s musings

To the Editor: Now that the election is over and there are no more negative commercials, we have to deal with protestors all over the country disrupting traffic and everything else. I wonder how many of them voted or not, voted for Trump but were too scared to say it and just went along with protesters to feel included. You’re not going to change the results; it’s time for a change. -RVHSK 0\HUV We’ve had career politicians in office for 6RXWK 3KLOO\ 5HYLHZ 6WDII :ULWHU far too long. Now we have someone who was never in politics, a self-made millionaire and a businessman who knows how to make money. Let’s give him a chance to do what has to be done to turn our country around. And to the person or persons who B y Ti n a G a r c e a u felt they had to write vulgar graffiti on my property because I supported Trump, I wish you had the nerve to confront me instead of doing it. Also two cars were keyed and tires slashed. But don’t worry about it, as I believe in karma and you will get yours.

y, my, how time has flown! Thanksgiving has arrived and has predictably placed me in very high spirits, as I, perhaps more than ever, have realized the depth of my blessings. One such source of gratitude is my role in chronicling life in South Philly, which I have done for this publication for six-anda-half years. With that tenure and those tasks as inspiration, I offer this list of reasons that I am thankful to comb our neighborhoods as a journalist.

9) The chance to see people plying their trades: A clutch base hit to tie a playoff baseball game? Check. A masterful performance by a burgeoning actress? Yes, please. These and many other examples have enabled me to marvel at the exuberance and skill that my subjects routinely display. Thank you for making it all look so easy. 8) The acquisition of knowledge: I am a sponge when it comes to learning, so making the acquaintance of so many talented people, particularly chefs, has not necessarily risen my IQ any but has definitely given my brain a few more welcomed wrinkles. 7) Time with colleagues: Like with any field, the newspaper industry sees frequent turnover, but in my time as a member of the Review, I have made many deep friendships, especially with present peers Bill Gelman, Cathy Semeraro, Tina Garceau, and John Gallo, the Mayor of South Philly. Their compassion and commitment will certainly be on my mind when I ready my plate.

Financial Aid Available for Qualified Claims for Plumbing or Roofing repairs. Call for Details!

6) The joy of tapping into subjects’ lives: Some assignments have been drab experiences where I have just had to be among a herd of reporters looking for the scoop so as to rush back to meet a deadline, but most have found me gaining intimate chances to understand what makes people tick. Interviews for our Lifestyles section have proven especially joyful in fathoming locals’ passion and pursuit and subsequent acquisition of excellence. 5) Thankfulness of subjects: I drew inspiration for this list party due to reconnecting two weeks ago with a 2010 interview subject. This person and I had not spoken since the resulting story ran, but he was still so grateful that I found his pitch exciting. This and similar displays of gratitude really resonate with me, as I am the far more thankful party for having had the chance to be the conduit for their greatness. 4) The resulting friendships: This time with the Review has yielded many amazing friendships and has easily convinced me that South Philadelphians, with whom I interacted in visiting family members here as a boy and in being a registrant at St. John Neumann High School, really are the most gregarious group of people in this city. No matter what the future holds for me with regards to travel, I am sure I will say the same whenever the bell tolls for me. 3) The increase in compassion: I am such a sap that “Christmas Tree might make a fitting nickname. I confess with no qualms that many assignments and articles have brought on a few tears and inspired many prayers for the well-being of my subjects. Thanks to their perseverance, I have made more sense of this goofy world and count them as the best people among us. 2) The mutual encouragement: I love people who are bursting with enthusiasm for their vocations, so it is definitely wonderful to experience reciprocity when I wish my subjects continued growth in their pursuits. Nothing beats encouragement, no matter how old someone is or how long he or she has logged time in a profession. Thank you for the positive push. 1) The consideration of what is to come: The day that South Philly runs out of tales to tell will be a sign of the apocalypse. Wondering what will be the next big story to chase is a never-flagging interest and the ultimate cause for me to say thanks for giving me so many wonderful tales to place in this paper. May your literal feast be as fulfilling as my figurative one. 635 Contact Staff Writer Joe Myers at jmyers@ southphillyreview.com

Happy Thanksgiving Ladybird

Julia Levitina

Ladybird draws on their multi-dimensional background, including European classicism, Swedish folk and jazz to create a sound that echoes like a wind through the Appalachian pines. Their original material is informed by these textures and brought to life by their instrumental abilities, but thrice as nice are their voices. Julia Levitina plays guitar a bit and sings a lot. Her sound is lyrically driven rocky folk Americana, subtly grounded in the Russian and French acoustic melodies she grew up with.

You’re preferred candidate won’t be either, and I mean no disrespect because President-elect Trump is my guy, too, for the next four years. Call off the most vile elements of Trump’s supporters who are out on the streets painting swastikas and intimidating minorities. I have always valued true conservatives such as David Frum. How about if you begin valuing true liberals? Stop thinking “liberal is a dirty word. I promise not to become an obstructionist the way the Republican Congress acted the last eight years. Unlike Mitch McConnell, the Republican Majority Leader in the Senate, my top priority will not be to stop Donald Trump from getting re-elected in the next four years. My top priority will be to keep America great. Republicans will now have to learn to govern instead of obstruct. Donald Trump and the Republican Congress will now become

I intend to oppose Mr. Trump with every fiber of my being if and when he tries to privatize or cut Medicare and Social Security, looks to remove those regulations that help protect our environment, and does anything that injures the most vulnerable in our society - measures that would also harm those of you who supported him. You want peace on the streets? So do I. You want a better America? So do I. We will, no doubt, have our differences on the path forward. But I pledge to argue my side with respect (and sometimes humor). I expect you to do the same. Deal? Oh, and Happy Thanksgiving. ito van Reigersberg shaved.

Martha for being hairy and being a fail for a woman, van Reigersberg said. “Here, you have to keep that illusion or lose some of the character. Martha can absorb accidents; here, things need to be precise. Although the dresses, makeup, and heels might look glamorous from the audience view, all that fabulousness comes at a stress-producing price. There’s one point where van Reigersberg is out of drag, playing Mills’ character out of costume. That scene of just a few minutes requires van Reigersberg to get out of costume completely – and then – get back into full drag just as quickly, for a subsequent scene. “It’s a little tricky. The clock is merciless, it keeps ticking, he explained. “You might be freaking out and racing backstage, but you can’t take that energy onto the stage. And then there’s the heat which van Reigersberg compares the feat to that of a swan - above water, floating gracefully on the surface, but paddling like hell underneath. And then there’s the lip syncing, some-

insignificant but it feels risky even though we live in a relatively free society and it’s been going on for centuries. However, after living as the Martha character for more than a decade, transition on many facets has become a familiar part of his life and while similar, there is a way that playing Tracy Mills has been a welcome break from the norm. Van Reigersberg noted that portraying her has also helped renew the other person that lives inside of him. And perhaps this is why he has become – and not quietly in the least – Philly’s most beloved drag queen, though by listing this city’s scene and a whole ecosystem of performers, he’d never lay claim to the title. “It’s taken me to places I never thought I would be, he said. “Like the Mayor’s Reception room, I mean seriously? When I was performing as a kid in my mom’s makeup, I never thought my band and I would end up there. This is not only an art form he hopes to teach, but a transformation process he hopes to inspire.

“There is drag that can be offensive, when being in drag is the only punchline, that’s not for me,â€? van Reigersberg said. “[Like] the football player that gets pushed out into the crowd in a dress, like how humiliating to be dressed like a woman? There’s no sense of humanity, of trying to become this other person.â€? But when done right, drag can be an empowering transformation. “It’s strange but you become more powerful, I may be this humble, quiet man, but I can have this intense change, and this feminine energy can allow me to run the room,â€? he revealed. “There’s power in Martha [and Tracy Mills] and the more [both of them], the more I absorb some of that for myself too.â€? Annual Tree Lighting Party + Deck the Ave Kick-Off November 26 thru December 17 Deck the Ave with the annual Tree Lighting Party at the Singing Fountain on December 1 from 5-7pm + holiday fun all month long! Deck the Ave! The ‘Deck the Ave’ holiday campaign will kick off on Saturday, November 26 with Small Business Saturday on the Avenue, offering special events, sales and more. This holiday season, we’ll also be featuring weekly photos with Santa, ‘PassyunkShops’ shopping specials, and Arctic Ave, a day-long festival with live ice carvings.

** SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY** Dozens of shops, restaurants, boutiques and other small businesses along the Avenue will be celebrating Small Business Saturday on November 26 with special events, deals, major sales and more. We’ll start by kicking off our 2016 #MadeOnEPA holiday gift campaign. Shoppers can support local makers by following the hashtag #MadeOnEPA on Twitter (@ epassyunkave) and Instagram (@eastpassyunk) to see our daily highlights of unique local products and gifts that are all made right here on East Passyunk Avenue. Also, shops and boutiques on East Passyunk Avenue will be launching brandnew holiday window displays on Saturday, too. Stroll the Avenue to see them all, and vote for your favorite during our Arctic Ave celebration on December 10.

h, Thanksgiving, what would you be without amazing gravy options? Still a delightful occasion, for sure, but we need to keep ourselves conscious of just how enriching these toppings can be. Daniel Israel will never encourage thin support of the thickeners and gives readers a holiday treat with his Mushroom Crack Gravy recipe. The Bala Cynwyd resident, who helms koshercateringphiladelphia.com, noted that his relatives drink the leftovers, if there are any, a gratifying endorsement for his fragrant and fulfilling helper. From Daniel’s kitchen to yours, Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

saute the mushrooms on medium high heat in the fat. After about 15 minutes or more of cooking and stirring, add the Kitchen Bouquet and the onions. Cook for about another 10 to 15 minutes to allow the onions to caramelize with the mushrooms. Add the garlic and stock, bring to a boil, and reduce the sauce to half its volume, about 15 minutes. Taste and season according to your desire with salt and pepper before thickening the sauce with a slurry by mixing the tapioca starch with water in a cup, then adding half of the mixture into the sauce. Stir, and let cook for three to five minutes. If it reaches your preferred thickness, you are done. If not, add the rest of the mixture, and allow it to cook in again. crowd them in the pan.) eigh Needham has resided in Philadelphia for 10 years, with Point Breeze as “the friendliest neighborhood that he has called home, and has honed a lifelong love for Indian cuisine, so when an opportunity to join the joy at Madira Bar & Grill, 1252 S. 21st St., shortly after its 2014 opening arose, the grateful chef could not resist the amalgamation of his geographic and gastronomic loves. “It’s definitely a perfect combination, the 29-year-old said from the location, which is a stone’s throw from his abode on the 2200 block of Titan Street. “I’ve had a lot of fun in my culinary career, and Madira has been another terrific stop for making memories and well-received food. The New England product has devoted his two-year tenure at the space to giving guests exquisite dishes akin to the ones that he particularly enjoyed when living outside Boston with his family. Then, Indian meals were rewards for great school endeavors or components of birthday celebrations, and he has used memories of their magnificence to give the sports bar, which also delights patrons with bingo, comedy nights, and Quizzo, a compelling identity. “We’ve done really well thanks to word of mouth buzz, Needham, whose other creative ventures have included time in East Passyunk Crossing and Queen Village, said. “I’d wanted to cook Indian food professionally, so everything about this experience is enriching. He especially takes pride in his hand in constructing the menu, a practice that he pronounced “a fascination, and in the attention that he and the bartenders give toward pairing craft beer selections, with 18 taps as their allies, with the plates. He recommended Bells Two-Hearted and Boulevard Tank No. 7 as complements to Madira’s Vegetarian Curry, the recipe for which he chose to share. “It’s such a blend of a multitude of fla-

vors, Needham said of the very popular item, which figures to become extra endearing now that we are racing toward winter. “It can go well with so many other options, especially Thanksgiving Day elements.

body’s homecoming queen. He and the Griffins are the beneficiaries of Neumann-Goretti’s need to halt its involvement in the Turkey Bowl. For the aforementioned reason, head coach Lincoln Townsend and his players, having already decided to forfeit their two remaining Catholic League Blue dates, will not compete and thus will give spectators a shot at seeing two public league institutions look to make a memorable morning. Considering that Palumbo, which struggled mightily its first two years of existence, captured its division title and enters, at 5-5, with a winning season on the line, the stage is set for such an unforgettable affair. “When I joined the team, I knew they weren’t really respected but also that we could be very good, senior wide receiver Kenny Bennett, an Engineering and Science registrant who plays for Pitzner thanks to a co-op agreement, said. “I believed we could bring everything together and build the program. Thanksgiving is just going to be proof that we’ve grown as a group. Headed for the University of Maryland as Palumbo’s first Division I pigskin signee, Bennett has proven a menace on both sides of the ball and will look to do damage to Southern’s defensive schemes and cause fits in his secondary role as a member of the Griffins’ secondary. “We’ve seen them practice and competed in unofficial scrimmages with them, Pitzner, a veteran of Thanksgiving preparation through his Southern tenure and his New Jersey-based playing days, said. “We know Roscoe’s gameplan; it’s all a matter of stopping it. IN HOPING TO head back to his Garden State home a victor, the eager coach will need for his hungry bunch to devour the ambition of a program well-versed in holiday hoopla. Though possessing a losing record on Thanksgiving due to powerful performances from Neumann-Goretti, formerly Southeast Catholic, Bishop Neumann, and Saint John Neumann High School, Southern has always delighted in experiencing the spirit

of the a.m. clashes, and Manier Kennedy expects for his final game as a Ram to prove a testament to his school’s tenacity. “A win will be a nice end to a good year, the wide receiver and cornerback said of the desired triumph that would lift his unit’s mark to 6-6. “We’ve matured over the season, so nobody wants to leave that field with a loss. The Grays Ferry inhabitant has nagged adversaries in the aforementioned positions and as a kick returner, gladly showing his resolve to his contemporaries and Natale. “He’s a great leader and we rely on him so much to start trouble, the East Passyunk Crossing denizen said of the speedster. “I expect for him and everybody else to play their hearts out. Natale’s roster benefits from multiple coop agreements, with registrants from Universal Audenried Charter High School, 3301 Tasker St.; Horace Furness High School, 1900 S. Third St.; and the Girard Academic Music Program, 2136 W. Ritner St., adding local flavor to the proceedings. In making the pitch to Pitzner to have Palumbo play in place of Neumann-Goretti, the revered coach, who will helm his third Thanksgiving game for the Rams, felt it would be “a perfect pairing and contends that it will yield fascinating matchups, including Bennett versus Kennedy. “Everybody’s local, it’s in South Philly, and it’s going to leave plenty of time for people to go home and be with their families, Natale, a former South Philly Review Readers’ Choice Awards honoree as top high school/youth coach, said. “We’re going through the same motions, and we’re looking forward to the opening kick because no matter what the opposite jerseys say, we’re not backing down. “Definitely not, Kennedy seconded, smiling when Natale called him and the others “a great group of guys. “We’ll go in relaxed, but nobody is going to sneak up on us as long as we play Rams football for four quarters. 635 Contact Staff Writer Joseph Myers at jmyers@ southphillyreview.com. or those who have grown accustomed to the thrill of seeing South Philadelphia High School, 2101 S. Broad St., battle Ss. Neumann-Goretti High School, 1736 S. 10th St., in Thanksgiving Day gridiron action, this holiday’s 10 a.m. alteration of that familiar and eight-decades-strong matchup will certainly prove awkward yet will not lack for local laurels. Due to the latter’s October cancellation of its remaining slate on account of a reduced roster, the Rams will instead look to batter the Griffins from The Academy at Palumbo, 1100 Catharine St., at the South Philly Supersite, 10th and Bigler streets. “This is huge for our program, coach

Scott Pitzner said from George Washington Carver Engineering and Science High School, where he serves as athletic director, of his club’s inaugural participation in a Thanksgiving duel. “I know that many people, including me, lived for NeumannGoretti versus Southern games, so this is a big change for them to handle, and we’re going to do our part to keep the holiday vibe strong by giving our best on each play. The former East Passyunk Crossing dweller possesses additional awareness of the mystique surrounding the typical tilt between the parochial institution and its public nemesis through having been Southern’s head man for two campaigns. As the lone coach Palumbo has had in its three-season pigskin annals, he is always encouraging his charges to consider the gravity of each moment, with the opportunity to take on a fellow South Philly school certainly a compelling blessing. “When he reached out to us, it made sense overall because there’s no serious travel involved and because of the shot at having bragging rights, Pitzner said of contact from Southern’s overseer, Frank “Roscoe Natale. “The fact that we know all about that team and will be playing on a familiar field are important, too, because I didn’t want to be some-
