Philadelphia School District Superintendent Dr. William Hite spoke to students at Abraham Lincoln High School recently. Hite credited strong leadership and educators for the increase in graduation rates at city schools.

ncient China is responsible for many wonderful contributions to our civilization. Among them are paper, silk, the compass (without one I can’t find my way above Broad and Snyder), the mechanical clock (which I’m only aware of twice a year when I forget to change the time), the toothbrush (an instrument we’ve managed to make as expensive as a meal at a French restaurant), fireworks (without which there would not have been a reason to attend a Phillies game in the last four years), toilet paper (although for some strange reason, many of my readers write me that they prefer to use my columns instead), ice cream (without which Ben and Jerry would just be two hippies trying to figure out which tie-dyed T-shirt to wear), and exploding cannonballs (which you could argue our culture could’ve done without). The above paragraph is designed to ensure you that what follows is not a rant from someone who is anti-Chinese. I am not advocating that we build a wall between China and ourselves. Oh wait, the Chinese have already done that. I am not in agreement with our President who believes that China is almost single-handedly responsible for our economic problems. I tend to blame Goldman Sachs (note – The fact that New Jersey elected a governor who worked at GoldmanSee CARDELLA, page 12>>

City schools mark spike in grads With changes on the horizon, graduation rates continue three-year climb By Logan Krum SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

B

ig things are happening in the School District of Philadelphia. Last week, Mayor Jim Kenney and other officials went to Abraham Lincoln High School in Northeast Philly to announce that the

district’s overall graduation rate has improved for the third consecutive year, bringing the total rate to 67 percent. The good news comes in the midst of other initiatives that could result in fairly large changes to the district. A progress report for the district’s first year of community schools was released, with plans to implement more community schools in the near future.

Plus, a meeting Nov. 16 could dissolve the staterun School Reform Commission and open the path to the district becoming independently controlled by the city. Kenney visited Lincoln Nov. 9 along with Superintendent Dr. William Hite and Councilman Bobby Henon. See SCHOOLS, page 6>>

Gamble credits Dee Dee Sharp for T.S.O.P. duo’s rise By Bill Gelman SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

W

hen it comes to music, Chubby Checker and Dee Dee Sharp share the common bond of being “dance craze” legends. Checker made his mark with “The Twist” while Sharp is known for “Mashed Potato Time.” The two singers came together earlier this month for a historic reunion that traced the roots of The Sound of Philadelphia and 60 years of world-renowned Philly Soul. Philadelphia International Records co-founder and R&B pioneer Kenny Gamble also attended the Philadelphia RowHome Magazine Blue Sapphire Awards at which both artists were presented with a Lifetime

Music Achievement honor. The roots of Gamble & Huff – the hit-making song-writing duo with Leon Huff – date back to the early 1960s, when they backed Checker and Sharp on tours as members of Kenny Gamble and the Romeos. At the awards ceremony, Gamble credited Sharp, especially, for introducing Gamble & Huff to Cameo-Parkway Records and becoming an essential figure in launching their legacy in making Philadelphia the capital of soul music in

the Seventies with a catalogue that includes dozens of worldwide hits and multi-platinum records. “If it wasn’t for this young lady,” said Gamble, “I don’t know if me and Huff would be where we are today.” … South Philly resident Scott Greer has returned to the stage for his latest tour-de-force performance in “Every Brilliant Thing.” The show is being billed as a “moving, insightful and hilarious new one-person play that is unlike anything you’ve seen

NEIGHBORHOOD

before.” Greer, who is an Arden Theater favorite, leads audiences through a remarkable journey that truly examines what makes life worth living – and the power of theater to bring people together. The show runs through Dec. 3 at the Bob and Selma Horan Studio Theatre at the Hamilton Family Arts Center, 62 N. 2nd St. Ticket prices start at $37. For more information, call 215-922-1122 or visit ardentheatre.org. … Councilman Kenyatta Johnson hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new $227,000 ADA approved playgrounds at Donald J. Finnegan playground, 1231 S. 30th St., with Philadelphia Parks & Recreation Commissioner Kathryn Ott Lovell and Grays Ferry neighbors. The new playgrounds will serve older and younger kids, giving

them additional safe space to play in the neighborhood. … The Christ Church South Philly, 229 Moore St., is holding a free Thanksgiving Community Dinner on Saturday (Nov. 18) from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. For more information, visit facebook.com/ christchurchsouthphilly. SCHOOLS: ‘When you invest in our kids, they succeed,’ said mayor

<<Continued from page 1 More than three-quarters of district students who entered ninth grade in the 2013-14 school year graduated within four years, notching in at 78 percent. This is an overall increase of 4 percent from the previous year. Lincoln has seen one of the largest leaps in graduation rates in the city, improving 12 percent from the previous year. Kenney said schools such as Lincoln find success when they are provided resources. “If you cut all the resources out of the school and expect them to be successful, you’re crazy. You see when you invest in our kids, they succeed,” Kenney said. District graduation rates have improved three years consecutively. Including alternative schools, the rate sits at 67 percent. Kenney said the accomplishment is particularly impressive due to budget cuts, citing hundreds of millions of dollars in cuts in the last few years. “We’re responsible for our schools and responsible for our kids, and if you want people who are going to come out of high school and college and grad school that can compete in the world’s economy, you’re going to have to invest in them,” Kenney said. The school held a pep rally to celebrate, featuring cheerleaders and a drum line from the marching band. Principal Jack Nelson commended his students for their efforts, saying students “are not only college and career ready, but life ready as well.” At Lincoln, Kenney said the managing director’s office of the Philadelphia Commerce Department has offered to work with the district. “We want to provide every graduating student with quality work experience, including a sum-

Councilman Bobby Henon challenged students to take to social media with the caption #HardWorkPaysOffLincoln to showcase their school pride. He promised he would buy lunch for a week for the post that got the most likes and shares. mer job, mentoring or shadowing an employer,” he said. Meanwhile, Research For Action released a progress report for the district’s first cohort of community schools, showing the first year of im-

plementation met the majority of goals set. The report shows that nine of the 15 goals were unanimously matched by each of the nine evaluated schools. It shows that all nine have put together committees representative of the surround-

ing neighborhood and collected information from surrounding neighbors. The report shows that schools still need to work on making sure meetings are transparent and ongoing, and that they are measuring outcomes. However, the latter may be difficult to manage in its first year. Community schools aim to provide neighborhoods surrounding the schools with resources they may lack, in addition to educating. Community Schools Director Susan Gorbeski said community schools will expand in the district, saying the current 12 will “expand over time to 25” schools. In a meeting happening this week, the staterun SRC will vote on whether to dissolve itself. Doing so would help Philadelphia regain control of its school system and take away state control. The five-person SRC would be replaced by a ninemember school board appointed by the mayor. Kenney spoke as if its conclusion was a done deal in the days leading up to the vote. “I know that as we return to local control of our school district under a mayoral-appointed board, we will have the opportunity to create many more connections, because city government and the school district will be working under one common vision,” Kenney said. Other changes in the district include an update in the district’s grading policy, which lowers the failure threshold from a grade of 65 to 59. Raising grad rates has been a goal of Hite’s for years. He credited educators and leaders for the district’s success. “We want to see more children who feel comfortable and safe and supported in their schools, regardless of where they go,” Hite said. “The work doesn’t change, the outcome does, and we want the outcome to continue to move positively.”

A financial blessing

From left, St. Pio Catholic Regional School Student Council Vice President Alura Troilo, Rev. Michael Reilly (pastor), Archbishop Michael Fitzgerald, Principal Eileen Wilson and Student Council President Patrick Collins show off a $1M check from the Father Brennan Endowment.

Archbishop Michael Fitzgerald visited St. Pio Catholic Regional School, 1826 Pollock St. on Nov. 8 to bless the new school windows and witness the presentation of the Father Brennan Endowment. The check was presented in the amount of $1 million to ensure a commitment to Catholic Education in our families and neighborhood. The school opened in 2012. One of those legacies was that of Rev. Brennan, the founding Pastor of Holy Spirit Church and School. When the school opened in 1966, his vision of Holy Spirit School was that it would be a worthy institution for training children to become good Catholics and proper citizens. This vision endured for 46 years until Holy Spirit School merged with St. Richard. With this endowment, the legacy, spirit and vision of Brennan can live on in the school family of St. Pio Catholic Regional.

Krasner is Philadelphia’s District Attorney-elect By Tom Waring SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

emocrat Larry Krasner cruised to victory in last week’s race for district attorney, piling up 75 percent of the vote. Republican Beth Grossman won 12 wards, including South Philadelphia’s 26th and Port Richmond’s 25th. “Beth is a great candidate. I wish I could clone her, party boss Mike Meehan said as he watched returns at the United Republican Club. But she was overwhelmed in North, West and Southwest Philadelphia, where Krasner and the rest of the Democratic ticket were rolling up more than 90 percent of the vote. Rashad Robinson, spokesman for the Color of Change political action committee, said, “District attorneys have the power to alter the daily lives of black people by choosing to either perpetuate or mitigate the role of rac-

In other political news, the Green Party of Philadelphia is happy about the likely abolishment of the School Reform Commission, but opposes Mayor Jim Kenney’s plan to appoint members to a new school board. The party wants an elected board. “To prevent a takeover by corporate interests, said Taj Magruder, an atlarge member of the Green Party city committee, “our school board elections must be publicly funded and must use instant runoff voting. In addition, students and teachers should have their own elected representatives on our new school board.

REMEMBER WHEN

Another popular neighborhood street game

C

hink may be another one of those classic neighborhood street games, but in today’s society, the name is not exactly politically correct. Politics aside, the topic is worthy of a return trip down memory lane. Some have referred to it as a poor man’s version of racquetball. All you needed was racquetball or pimple ball. The exterior walls at the local school or a local commercial building served as the play surface. The goal was to hit the ball and make the other person miss. It had to hit the ground first then the wall. Jimmy Ripoli and his friends enjoyed playing the game at 13th and Morris streets back in the day. Those of you who played the game may remember those specialty shots - the slam, the slice, the tap and the skinner. Have a memory to share about those popular street games from the good ol’ days? CARDELLA: Where you can stick it <<Continued from page 1 Sachs just shows that even a candidate with THAT background looked better to voters than anyone with links to Chris Christie). I am also aware that dollar stores would not exist if it were not for stuff manufactured in China. Okay, I’m glad we got all that out of the way because here’s what I am really against: chopsticks! Chopsticks were invented in China anywhere from 5,000 to 9,000 years ago. I realize that covers a wide area, but history is what it is – a way for David McCollough to earn a living. The name “chopsticks” Is thought to be derived from “chop chop.” Which means quick. However, if you saw me trying to use chopsticks, “quick” would be the last word that would come to mind. Some historians believe that “chopsticks” derives from “chow chow,” which means “food.” Why is it necessary to repeat “chop” or “chow?” I am not going to make the obvious guess for fear of offending those who stutter. Note: in 1877, Euphemia Allen decided to call his musical composition “Chopsticks” and confused everyone. The use of chopsticks spread from China across Asia. In Japan for example, sitting with your chopsticks crossed means “death.” This is obviously something to consider the next time you’re pondering whether to order the California roll or the higher-end sushi. I am obsessed with the thought that the only reason chopsticks were really invented was to embarrass me at Asian restaurants. I realize the timeline is wrong, but I can’t shake that thought. At one time, using chopsticks might have been the best way to get food to your mouth. But then the fork came along. By the way, the fork was invented around 4 A.D. in Byzantine, part of the Roman Empire. The fork didn’t really come into common usage until the 17th century when kings got tired of trying to rip apart the Ossobuco with their bare hands. Some kings had a problem with

attacking their meat in that fashion because they felt they would look uncivilized in Hollywood movies three centuries later. Others simply became annoyed when the flying juice increased the cost of dry cleaning. In any event, along came the fork and mankind progressed until November 8, 2016, the day Donald Trump was elected. I am well aware that many historians believe that Eastern civilization is superior to that of the West. After watching Ichiro hit in the majors I’m tempted to agree. However, there is one exception where I believe the East showed a lack of imagination. The fork is vastly superior to chopsticks. I am not asking Asia to give up chopsticks or even admit that the West got one thing right. And if Asian restaurants here in America want to give me chop sticks with my pork fried rice, I will not argue the point. But I also want a fork with my meal without having to ask for one. Let’s face it, there is a form of snobbery that goes on among Americans eating in Asian restaurants. There are perfectly nice people who insist on showing that THEY know how to use chopsticks while you sit there waiting for a fork. These folks can be members of your immediate family or your closest friends, but they won’t hesitate to flaunt their utensil superiority. My retort is that if forks were good enough for the Byzantines, they are good enough for me. At one time, I would give a half-hearted effort to try and use the chopsticks only to have the snow peas wind up on my lap. My using a fork instead of chopsticks should not be construed as some form of American provincialism. It is time to use that fork proudly. Unapologetically. For too long, those of us who are chopsticks-disadvantaged have lived in fear of scorn. Some of us might have stayed away from Asian restaurants (I still countenance caution when it comes to “fusion” restaurants because I think they suffer from an identity crisis). If Confucius were around today, he would undoubtedly say “Put a fork in it!”

Philadelphia Wing Festival generates some heat On Saturday, hundreds took to the 2300 Arena in South Philly for the inaugural event By Tom Beck SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

O

n Saturday, hundreds of Philadelphians took to the 2300 Arena in South Philly for the inaugural Philadelphia Wing Festival, hosted by A Taste of Your Town, a Delaware Countybased company that puts on a variety of food-themed events up and down the East Coast. “We’ve been talking about [doing] it for a couple of years,” said Dave Feldman Sr, one of the organizers of the festival and owners of A Taste of Your Town. “I just think that the wing is a fan favorite anywhere in the world you go, right? I mean, anywhere you go, any menu you go to you see a wing. It’s a fan favorite for anybody.” According to Feldman, the festival boasted 24 vendors selling 73 flavors of wings. In addition to that, judges ranked the top three best wings of the festival for three categories. The categories were best mild wing, best hot wing and best hot/sweet BBQ wing. The winners were as follows:

Best Mild Wing

Above, South Jersey friends Wilson Mendez (left) and Denny Ogrodnick made their way over to South Philly for the inaugural Philadelphia Wing Festival at the 2300 Arena. At left, Ohio State student Connor Tayman chows down on some wings while he’s in town to visit his girlfriend, Haley Tiller, who goes to University of Pennsylvania.

Best Hot Wing 3rd place: Sinful Taste 2nd place: Tavern on the Edge 1st place: Cavanugh’s Restaurant

Additionally, Dominic’s Tavern won the award for “most popular wing.” The judges consisted of WooderIce. com founder and columnist Hector Nunez, Hell’s Kitchen contestant Barbie Marshall, ThePhillyFoodGirl.com founder and blogger Kass Dahlquist, Dan Craig from PhillyVoice.com, BillyPenn.com culture editor Danya Henninger, Trauma Survivors Foundation president Dennis Carradin, What’s on Tap? TV show host Gary Monterosso, and self-proclaimed “wing aficionado”

Christina May. Nunez spoke highly of the event. “It’s got a great variety … Music, entertainment, breakout spaces, games, what more could you want?” he said. But what makes a quality wing?

“Well first off, is it fresh?,” said Marshall, the judge who was also a contestant on Hell’s Kitchen. “If it’s hot, it can’t just be hot. It has to be a balanced hot. It has to have flavor to the heat. Like if you’re going to use some outra-

geous pepper, like a malagueta or a ghost pepper – which I would recommend – you still have to be able to taste the flavor of the pepper itself, without getting your head blown off, because what’s the point of that?” Monterosso, warned that it’s not just taste that matters. The appearance of the wing is also important. “You have to judge it based on appearance,” Monterosso said. “I’m going to examine long before I even eat it.”

“Philadelphia has some of the best food in the entire country,” said Robert Brazas, who is also one of the event’s organizers and owners of A Taste of Your Town. “Wing Bowl has been going on for about 15 plus years, but no one has done anything that was really family-centric. That’s where we came in. We looked to put together some of the best events in the tri-state area. Very family friendly and an awesome event for all. That’s where the inception of Philadelphia Wing Festival really came from. It’s getting all the best vendors together from all the best restaurants, and bringing them to one location. It’s very family-friendly and just an amazing day.”

Former Phillies remember ‘Doc’ as ‘one of the greatest’ By Bill Gelman SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

T

he Philadelphia Phillies family and their fans received some shocking news last week – former ace pitcher Roy Halladay, 40, died in a plane crash in the Gulf of Mexico on Nov. 7. The pitcher, who stepped away from baseball four years ago, was piloting his single-engine aircraft. The Phillies expressed their condolences following the passing of the former two-time Cy Young Award winner: “We are numb over the very tragic news about Roy Halladay’s untimely death. There are no words to describe the sadness that the entire Phillies family is feeling over the loss of one of the most respected human beings to ever play the game. It is with the heaviest of hearts that we pass along our condolences to Brandy, Ryan and Braden.” Halladay split his 16 seasons between the Toronto Blue Jays and Phil-

Fans left memorial items outside Citizens Bank Park in wake of the death of former pitcher Roy Halladay. who was a member of the Phillies 2008 World Series team, shared his heartbreak over the news: “I am heartbroken and saddened by the loss of Roy Halladay. Roy’s impact on the game of baseball will always be respected and his impact on his teammates will always be cherished,” Moyer said. “Roy was one of those special teammates that made you better by his presence and his passion for excellence. The game of baseball will

lies, compiling a 203-105 career mark with a 3.38 earned run average. The eight time All-Star tossed a perfect game for the Phillies during the 2010 season and followed it up by tossing a no-hitter in the postseason. He is one of two pitchers in MLB history to toss a no-no in the playoffs, with the other one being former New York Yankee Don Larsen, who accomplished the feat in the 1956 World Series. Former teammate Jamie Moyer,

miss that presence greatly. My prayers go out to Brandy, Ryan and Braden and the entire Halladay family.” Former catcher Carlos Ruiz also was shocked by the news. “When I got the phone call and heard the news about Roy, I was truly devastated,” he said “Roy was one of the greatest pitchers I ever caught, and an even better person and friend.” The Halladay family released a statement about their beloved husband and father. “Roy grew up with a passion for planes and always had the goal of becoming a pilot. Since retiring from baseball, he has been actively studying, accumulating the required flight hours and obtaining multiple pilot certifications and licenses. Just as he was known for his work ethic in baseball, he was also widely respected by those who knew him in the aviation community for his hard work, attention to detail and dedication to safety while flying,” the family said. “He treated his passion for

aviation with the same joy and enthusiasm as he did his love for baseball.” The Halladay family held a celebration of life for Roy Halladay at Spectrum Field in Clearwater, Fla. In lieu of flowers, the Halladay family kindly requests that contributions be made to: Halladay Family Foundation c/o The Giving Back Fund, 5757 W. Century Blvd., Suite 410, Los Angeles, California, 90045. It supports organizations that are tied to two causes that are most meaningful to the Halladay family – youth sports programs and animal welfare. Beneficiaries of foundation funding will include, but is not limited to, organizations that provide the opportunity for young athletes to develop to their highest potential, with particular emphasis on sportsmanship and building greater self-esteem. Additionally, organizations that help to improve the quality of life for animals through rescue, adoption and humane treatment will be eligible to receive funding.

Saints crowned champs The Ss. Neumann-Goretti football team added another championship title to the school trophy case following Saturday’s 18-0 victory over Blue Division rival West Catholic. The latest victory secured the District 1-12 Class AA title for the 10-0 East Passyunk Crossing-based squad. It was their second victory over the Burrs this season, with the other one being a 20-6 triumph during the regular season. Senior wide receiver Dymnir Cave and junior quarterback Charles Britt connected on an 87-yard touchdown in the first quarter while Chris Wells added a 44-yard rushing touchdown in the third quarter. Senior tight end Jayvonne Campfield also caught a touchdown pass from Britt. On the defensive side of the ball, rookie

Tysheem Johnson picked off his sixth pass of the season. Neumann-Goretti will be back in action on Friday night (Nov. 17) against Schuylkill Haven out of District 11. Kickoff is 6 p.m. at the South Philly super site, 10th and Bigler streets. The winner will advance to the PIAA Class AA quarterfinal round and face the winner of the Southern Columbia/Mt. Carmel contest, which is also being played on Friday. Neumann-Goretti also won the Blue Division crown following a 6-0 league mark. The Saints opened the month with a 54-6 victory over Strawberry Mansion for the City title. In other football news, head coach Albie Crosby was named the Catholic League Blue Division Coach of the Year. – Bill Gelman

Making the list:

Feature films to get you through another upcoming holiday season

fate of this galaxy far, far away. In “The Last Jedi,” Rey discovers her powers and takes the hand of Kylo Ren (!!!) who she hopes “will show me my place in all this.” Written and directed by Rian Johnson (“Rogue One,” Breaking Bad’s final season), this could be the franchise’s bleakest blockbuster, but I don’t think people will care. If Johnson delivers like he did two years ago, look for “The Last Jedi” to be big.

By Logan J. Gardner SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

F

rom “A Christmas Story” to “Die Hard,” holiday films are an American institution. Whether our hearts expand around Christmas or we’re looking to escape family time, early winter movies are part of our culture. This season, we balance familiar franchises (“Justice League,” “The Last Jedi,” “Black Panther”) with biopics (“I, Tonya,” “The Greatest Showman,” “The Post”) as protagonists, from superheroes to P.T. Barnum, look into themselves to overcome challenges. Tying these movies together are themes of self-discovery, expression, and love, which is also an interesting interpretation of America’s current cultural state. Authenticity, like in Tonya Harding’s candid fall, triumphs typical Hollywood love-story narcissism. The epitome of this ethos is Ferdinand the Bull (“Ferdinand”), and fragments of his revamped story can be seen in most major films this season.

The Greatest Showman (Dec. 20)

All images courtesy YouTube

Clockwise from top, Chadwick Boseman, fresh off his role as Thurgood Marshall, stars in ‘The Avengers’ offshoot, ‘Black Panther;’ Gal Gadot reprises her role as Wonder Woman to join forces with other D.C. comics heroes to save the day in ‘Justice League;’ Margot Robbie portrays infamous figure skater Tonya Harding in ‘I Tonya.’

Justice League (Nov. 17)

In keeping with the superhero theme of 2017, the spirit of the late Superman lives on in Justice League as Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Flash, and Cyborg unite, under director Zack Synder (“Man of Steel,” “300”), to save Earth from alien-invader Steppenwolf. With an all-star cast (Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Jason Mamoa and Robin Wright), at its worst, “Justice League” will crush the box office, guaranteeing that this movie will be talked about.

The Post (Jan. 12)

Wonder (Nov. 17)

Auggie Pullman (Jacob Tremblay) is a fifthgrade boy with a facial difference, just trying to make it through middle school. But with Julia Roberts and Owen Wilson for parents, anything is possible. If it’s anything like the book by author Steve Conrad, it will be heart wrenching. “Wonder “is directed by Stephen Chbosky, who wrote “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” and directed the movie version. Both were critically acclaimed, so success would seem likely. With last-minute delays earlier this year, the bar is high for his latest work.

Call Me By Your Name (Nov. 24)

A likely favorite, “Call Me By Your Name” is a summer romance sure to touch the heart as its gay storyline transcends stereotype with intimate passion and easy beauty. A hearty teenager (Timothée Chalamet) slowly loses himself in his family’s American guest (Armie Hammer) over the course of a Northern Italian summer. The love opens his eyes to the world and himself. The 24-year-old guest, however, is also his father’s research assis-

In 1871, a man, whose clock company had recently bankrupted him, started a ‘traveling museum, menagerie, caravan, and hippodrome.’ His name was P.T. Barnum (Hugh Jackman) and the story of his circus is nothing less than the invention of America’s imagination. Starring Zac Efron, Michelle Williams, Rebecca Ferguson, and Zendaya, “The Greatest Showman” is this year’s moviemusical, and already has the magical makings of “La La Land.” Debuting Michael Gracey as director (but, really, it’s Jackman’s passion project) with songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (“La La Land,” “Dear Evan Hansen”), the stars could align for “The Greatest Showman.” Which would be prophetic, given the film’s believe-in-yourself-tosucceed motif. Although it might give you the circus itch, don’t make plans to attend. Ringling, Barnum, and Bailey Bros. ended operations last May.

Luca Guadagnino (Melissa P.) is a master of sensuality at peak performance. Already acclaimed at Sundance and Venice, “Call Me By Your Name” looks to deepen the gay romance canon with its psychologically relaxed but emotionally intense style.

I, Tonya (Dec. 8) “And the haters always say, Tonya, tell the truth. There’s no such thing as truth...” says the protagonist in Long Island accent in the trailer to the film. Tonya Harding (Margot Robbie), the psycho iceskater America loved to hate, is back in the biopic of the season. The star of the fall film festivals (Toronto, Philadelphia), “I, Tonya” is the equal-parts-horrifyingand-hilarious story of Nancy Kerrigan’s knee in the lead-up to the 1994 Winter Olympics. Peeling back layers of tabloid truth, director Craig Gillespie

ing’s core. Look for “I, Tonya” in Oscars discussions.

Ferdinand (Dec. 15) A big-hearted bull escapes his fighting fate in the family-oriented feel-good of the season. Imagining a beautifully animated Spain, director Carlos Saldanha (“Rio,” “Ice Age”) pits freedom against tradition as Ferdinand (John Cena) embraces himself to find home. Based on the Munro Leaf’s classic children’s book, Ferdinand depicts the ethos that’s inspired countless works, from “The Blind Side” to “Dr. Strange.” For this reason alone, I think the animated flick will be worth the watch.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi (Dec. 15) The newest Star Wars is the most anticipated movie of the year. From Daisy Ridley’s (Rey) November Vogue cover to the 34 million times-

Washington Post publisher Kay Graham (Meryl Streep) and editor Ben Bradlee (Tom Hanks) battle the government in the declassification and public release of the Pentagon Papers. Directed by Steven Spielberg, “The Post” brings to life the scandal of the half- century that was Watergate, and the bravery that uncovered it. But I’d go just to see Streep and Hanks on screen together. Aptly timed, “The Post,” hotly anticipated by critics and politicians alike, is a torch in today’s fake news darkness.

Black Panther (Feb. 16)

Trouble is brewing in Wakanda, a secret nation hidden in Africa. King T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) must work with the CIA to prevent Erik Killmonger (Michael Jordan) from starting a world war. With Lupita Nyong’o heading the femme fatale squad and Forest Whitaker as King T’Challa’s Obi Wan Kenobi, 2018’s most exciting film looks to deliver. The timing, with Africa’s contemporary rise, is also apt. Written and directed by Ryan Coogler (“Creed”), “Black Panther” has been on radars since 1992, when Wesley Snipes first mentioned its development. With stunning 3D and aforementioned star power, the wait seems to have
