once told a former editor of this newspaper that I hated computers and would never have one in my home. I watched as his head exploded. He thought Tom Cardella computers were the greatest thing since stuffed shells (never understood why sliced bread was supposed to be great). This was before computers became an everyday tool both in business and home use. I have since gotten rid of my manual then electric typewriters and acquiesced to the age of the computer. However, I still contend that I was correct when I argued at the time that computers would render us slaves to them and make many of our jobs a lot less interesting. All of this is leading up to the fact that for the past two weeks, I have been living without a computer since it decided to crash eight years after I purchased it. ASS &$5'(//$ ^OUS ! ,,

Unless you’re addicted to that step counting app on your phone, the idea of walking around a roughly 300,000 square foot commercial space sounds like an exhausting task. Shopping needs to get done. Fighting the December chill blasting you in the face while trying to maintain a firm grip on those plastic shopping bags, you come to find the idea of taking a comfortable seat on a trolley does not sound so crazy. Comfort seekers have boarded the ride every Thursday through Sunday since Nov. 17. Operating from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., the amenity comes courtesy of an agreement between Breslin Realty Development Corp., which serves as the managing agent for the South Whit Shopping Center Associates, and Philadelphia Sightseeing Tours. The latter entity came to Breslin’s attention through its Trolley Express Philly option that has proven a vital means for conveying area children to school. s a native of Philadelphia, Maggie Lakis holds that the city “won’t let you get cocky but also contends that people can come to expect a bit of fortune if they dedicate themselves to being diligent. The 38-year-old is enjoying a stroke of that goodness through “A Children’s Christmas in Wales, the Dylan Thomas-penned seasonal treasure that she and four South Philly peers are performing at the Walnut Street Theatre. “I’m having a really wonderful time, the Passyunk Square resident said shortly before a show at America’s oldest theatrical haven. “Each performance has built upon the positive vibes that are inherent in the material, and since I’m interacting with such easygoing and giving actors, it’s such a joy to be a part of this production. The Barrymore Award-nominated hire is joining with Barrymore winners Scott Greer and Aaron Cromie, who is also directing, Mat-

thew Mastronardi, and Amanda Jill Robinson for the Irish Repertory Theatre of New York’s adaptation of the Welch bard’s cordial creation in which audiences “remember the joys of being young, the strength of a community, and the comfort of a loving family. Lakis and the other locals are taking to their tasks through Dec. 23 and are engendering joyful experiences by executing traditional and contemporary holiday tunes, with the opportunity proving especially profound for this week’s subject, who is making her Walnut Street Theatre debut. “It’s a powerhouse with such amazing history, Lakis said of the 1809-founded venue that has enlisted “A Children’s Christmas in Wales as an element of its Independence Studio on 3 season. “The combination of the location, great castmates, and a beloved text are making this a really great element of a wonderful time in my life. The South Philly dwellers are delighting patrons with their vocal versatility and musical mastery, the latter ability calling on Lakis to play autoharp, banjo, bells, flute and ukulele.

6O^^g OP]cb B`c[^ To the Editor: Now that the General Election already occurred a month ago, I want to reflect on the state of our nation. I am not one to gloat, but I can say I am happy that Trump won. I’m an 85-year-old South Philly lifer, and I’ve always been outnumbered in this city because I’m a conservative. It grew so tiring decades ago to hear that Democrats believe their answers are always right. I think that’s what plagues their party nationwide. They somehow think they’re more enlightened, and they profess to be so tolerant. Well, that is until you disagree with them. Then you’re pretty much pond scum.

Call me whatever you want, but I am counting down the days until Donald Trump becomes our president. Let my age be proof that I have seen some trying days in my time. Thankfully, any more that happen will not be with Hillary Clinton as the leader of our country. Annette Deladiarte South Philadelphia

illiam Tucker will have a preliminary hearing today in conjunction with his Nov. 22 arrest. The detainment of the 56-year-old South Jersey resident comes based on the Nov. 9 discovery of a trio of vandalized vehicles and a house on the 900 block of South Sixth Street. As first reported in the Nov. 17 South Philly Review as “The vainglorious vandal, someone applied the messages “Trump Rules and “Black B---h on a 2015 Nissan Armada SUV. Police showed the owner of the automobile a surveillance video two days later, with the woman identifying the suspect as a former boyfriend. Along with that matter, authorities charged him with criminal mischief for supposedly repeating the “Trump Rules sentiment on a white ’16 Infiniti QX60 SUV and the aforementioned Bella Vista home and spray painting “T on the front hood of a white ’13 Lincoln MKX SUV.

Six days prior, a 17th District officer busted the 28-yearold in conjunction with June 6 and Nov. 2 robberies of Rite Aid, 3000 Reed St., with the law enforcement figure collaring him on the 2500 block of Tasker Street after having determined he matched the description of the at-large offender. He awaits a Dec. 13 preliminary hearing.

Fight like a preemie Bryce’s mom, Kriston Brooks, was admitted to the hospital when she was 24 weeks pregnant. Suffering from preeclampsia, she was told her condition was severe, and a doctor went through worst-case scenarios with her and her husband, David. “He told us we might lose [Bryce], he might have a brain bleed and everything possible that might happen to him, Brooks said. “That day, I hated that doctor. That doctor is now my favorite person in the world. Without him and the other staff, Bryce wouldn’t be here. Bryce arrived three weeks later and weighed just 1 pound, 15 ounces. His diaper was smaller than a $1-dollar bill. Both he and his mom were in highly critical condition. The doctors weren’t sure if either one would survive. Bryce remained at the NICU until Nov. 19. While some families celebrate monthly milestones after their baby’s birth, the Brooks celebrated weeks, making posters to mark each one. “It was rough, Brooks said. “We were at Penn every single day. It was just a roller

the nurses’ compassion during his visits to the NICU. “They really got to know you on a personal level. It was never like a 9-to-5 to them, he said. “They stayed after their shifts. They were like family. They still text and ask about him. Giving back Now it’s the Brooks’ turn to give back. They hope to raise awareness of the hospital’s work, to help other families facing the same, incredible challenge of an infant in intensive care. The family is collecting donations, ordinary items for infants that can ease the challenge of an extended stay in the unit. “Bryce always had someone there, she said, “but there were babies there and Dave wanted to pick them up. You don’t know if Mom had another kid at home and couldn’t get there. But just for the families to walk into a gift, it just makes you know someone was there looking for you. Those gifts are possible through the goodwill of others, something that the Brooks hope their neighborhood will rally around. “Everything that they get is donations, Brooks said. “Any preemie clothes we bought for him, we donated back. And when we were there, we never had to ask for anything. And to share the message that anything is possible. “We always say that it’s just Bryce’s world, we just live in it. He’s our miracle. He’s proof that miracles do come true. SPR The Brooks family will be collecting donations for the Penn Medicine NICU until Saturday, Dec. 10. Items needed include preemie- and newborn-sized pajamas and onesies (snaps preferred), baby books, small baby toys, journals, pens, snacks, baby mittens, baby hats, hand sanitizer, tissue packs and travel size toiletries. The care that he received there is the reason the 16-month-old boy is alive and thriving today. But it’s more than just the medical technology that left a lasting mark on Bryce and his family’s lives. It’s the nurses who cried with the Brooks during their darkest hours. It was walking through the unit doors and never having to ask for anything. It was the followup calls from the same nurses months after Bryce went home. It was also seeing babies that weren’t fortunate enough to have family visits every day. The Brooks’ gratitude for all of that and more has led the Port Richmond family to collect donations for the Penn unit’s babies who won’t be home with their families during the holidays.

Oregon Ave., during the holiday season, overseers wanted to ease travel for patrons, especially older adults, of the 27 businesses and thus secured their bond early last month. “We loved the concept and definitely wanted the partnership, Lisa Bass, the group sales and marketing manager for Philadelphia Sightseeing Tours, said of the 40-hour complimentary service that will run through New Year’s Eve. “The promotion of it has been growing, so we’re expecting for it to gain even more notice as December unfolds. THIS WELCOMING MODE of transportation makes getting around a little easier for Arturo Mangeli, who on Friday, walked to Whitman Plaza from his home on the 400 block of McKean Street. This is the same soon to be 76-year-old who is two months removed from double knee replacement surgery. Mangeli wages battles with himself each day, wondering if he should accept his relatives’ requests to help him to secure means to travel or maintain the fully independent lifestyle that his wife Betty’s death five years ago inspired him to cultivate. “Try as I might to stay stubborn, I sometimes have to admit that I need help, the Pennsport resident said upon waiting for the white painted trolley outside of ShopRite, the center’s newest tenant. “I heard about this last week from my daughter-inlaw, so I’m out here to grab a few things and see what it’s about. During the summer, Mangeli and 10 family members explored parts of the city through one of the double-decker buses for which Bass’ employer has acquired renown, so when his daughter-in-law Lilian explained that Philadelphia Sightseeing Tours is also behind the plaza experience, he finally felt compelled to give his new knees even the slightest break. “I think this is great for fossils like me, he said upon retrieving bags of fruit from his ShopRite cart. “It’s a pretty big space if you’re going from end to end, and many people my age can’t hack it, especially when there’s bad weather. Friday featured clear skies and a bright disposition from driver Jerome Jasper, whose career as a motorist has taken him all over this great country. My last two columns were typed on my wife’s I-Pad (that’s a whole other story). Allow me to digress here because I think I need to rant to relieve the pressure of this modern technological existence into which I’ve been dragged kicking and screaming. My wife’s I-Pad brings with it her Facebook page with its toxic comments about the election we all lived through. In addition to the toxic comments (wife and I are the essence of reason compared to the rumors and insults that are bandied back and forth there on a daily basis, the Facebook page also contains prayers for which the sender implores you to reply with an “amen and less horrible things happen to you (sometimes the condition is a positive one and promises you that instead of frogs, money will rain down from heaven on you. Occasionally there are “exotic recipes -- all of which require melted cheese. Needless to say, I can live quite well without Facebook, and have already made my first New Year’s resolution — don’t ever look at my wife’s Facebook page. My wife also has a new Samsung phone — hopefully the model that will not explode in her pretty little ear. Now, not only do my grandkids ignore me when we dine together, but my wife does, too. I think I will always “cherish the picture of her dining with me at a chic Asian restaurant and poking furiously out a reply to one of the idiots on her Facebook page (who unfortunately happens to be a relative). I ate my Mongolian stir-fry in utter silence that evening, although she did pause to let me know that my Temple basketball team had won a big game. Back to the story of my misery these past two weeks. I had mucho problems getting my column to the Review without the comfort of my personal computer (it hurts me even to write those words). I must have called Joe Myers four times to make sure that he received the column (he didn’t the first three times — is it possible to hit “send and not send something?). Just think, dear reader, how close you came to there being an empty space in this newspaper where my column has resided for these past 52

or so years. Why are so many of you applauding at that thought? My good friend helped me purchase a new computer, but not before I had to make another momentous decision or two -- laptop or desktop? Apple or PC? Incidentally, have you ever noticed that Apple owners are a bit deranged in their loyalty? I include several wonderful friends — my wonderful daughter and son-in-law are in that group. I can understand being fanatic about the bread on your dinner table, but really, the brand of computer and assorted other gadgets? The younger generation has already placed Steve Jobs in the company of Edison and Marconi, and I resent it, along with Bill and Melinda Gates. Anyway, I wound up choosing a serviceable PC mainly because I was afraid to have to learn a new system. It turns out that everything I used and learned on my old computer is obsolete. I am now happily typing away on my new keyboard in Microsoft Works. “Happily is a relative term. A computer is supposed to be a tool. A writer is not supposed to be worrying about his computer more than the content (does it show?). Would Hemingway have done himself in 10 years earlier if he had been forced to hack out “The Old Man and the Sea in Microsoft Word? Can you see “Papa concerning himself with whether the font is large enough or where is the box for spell check? Would a couple of bottles of rum been enough to get Ernest through the ordeal? As I write these words, I worry whether I will lose what I wrote before I figure out how to save it. Am I not only ruining my life (and Uncle Nunzi’s who hears my swear words), but the life of Joe Myers here at the newspaper by driving him to drink as well? Will these words ever see the light of day and get to you, Joe? I am cheered by the fact that I have mastered accessing the Internet. s a native of Philadelphia, Maggie Lakis holds that the city “won’t let you get cocky but also contends that people can come to expect a bit of fortune if they dedicate themselves to being diligent.

The script does not place emphasis on naming the characters but instead aims to identify them as members of a cohesive unit, a move that makes Lakis happy. “The idea is that we recite the poem and play instruments as a family who enjoys one another’s company, she said. “That’s the spirit that comes through in our interactions, and it’s the perfect mindset to have as the holiday season unfolds. The offer to join the commended cast came in the summer, and she anticipated an enriching collection of occasions to gain even more proof of Philadelphia’ incredibly caring and creative theater scene, particularly given the novelty of being a Walnut Street Theatre employee. With 15 days left until she and her gifted contemporaries leave guests to plot their own yuletide celebrations, she knows the constant warmth from their exchanges will fend off literal and figurative chills. “We all get along so well that it’s going to be easy to take the kind sentiments from this show and apply them to how we live our lives no matter what time of year it is, Lakis said. “That’s one of the things that I love about Philadelphia. I think it provides

constant chances to see the bigger picture, and I love that. I admire that it gives us so many moments to find balance. As a performer, I find that a pretty healthy benefit to living here. HAVING CALLED PHILADELPHIA home for a considerable part of her life has meant that Lakis has received ample reminders of its penchant for pushing people to test their tenacity. With the arts as a huge part of her upbringing, she loved how taking on different endeavors could yield something new every time and took great pride in guiding observers to enduring appreciation for creative works. “The idea of suspending disbelief and making people care resonated with me, Lakis said, with high school breeding belief that she could become quite adept at both practices. “Being from Philadelphia, I felt drawn to the East Coast in wanting to see how far I could nurture self-belief and go after valuable life lessons. She picked up one such charming chance at acquiring wisdom while enrolled at Temple University, with the now-Whitmanheadquartered 1812 Productions casting the

young adult in 1999’s “Box Office of the Damned. Nailing additional work helped her to develop an unwavering perception of Philadelphia as a city that requires one to be tireless yet judicious to self in seeking, securing, and valuing opportunities. “The spirit here is one of inclusivity, I’d say, Lakis said, echoing a popular refrain among South Philly actors and actresses that holds that egos will never reign supreme and that establishing a presence in one’s community, both on stage and off, is always going to be about being humble. “We can put all this pressure on ourselves, but you have to maintain perspective and not be so lost in yourself. I could go to a store, for example, and nobody would know or necessarily care if I had cracked a note the night before. Just be true to yourself. Allegiance to that stance has made Lakis a constant presence in Philadelphia, with the Arden Theatre Co. as a frequent employer, and beyond, including the inaugural national tour of “Avenue Q. Shortly before giving this publication an interview, Lakis needed to trek to New York for a fitting, with a tour of “Something Rotten awaiting her and husband Rob McClure as soon as

we welcome a new year. “The leniency that the companies are showing me to pull off both of these productions is amazing, she said of the dual duties, with rehearsals for “Something Rotten having begun Monday. “It’s probably the best Christmas present that I could ask for. No matter where she travels, though, Lakis will always look forward to returning to Passyunk Square, where she has resided since 2009. Those roots make her interactions with neighbors akin to the exchanges that she shares with her stage family, as each instance reminds her of her fortune. “I’m at a very luck and fruitful point in my life, Lakis said. “It’s great to give and get support. If you’re fortunate, that’s Philadelphia in a nutshell. SPR

Patty’s day

T

he Christmas season finds many folks thinking of choirs of angels thanks to “O Come, All Ye Faithful, but that does not mean that anyone should abstain from a little indulgence, even if an item’s name contains an adjective with hellish connotations. Rest assured, however, that this recipe from Debbie Robb will not have one seeking an exorcism or even extra exercise. The Pennsport resident will have you agreeing with the first modifier of her submission once you give these goodies a whirl, and you will certainly end up singing more than the praises of the heavens when you do.

The Battle Against Bud Will beer sales soon feel the hit from the legalization of recreational marijuana?

N

ot to harsh your mellow, but beer is suddenly getting some serious competition from cannabis. Seven states and Washington, D.C., have legalized recreational weed, and 20 others allow its so-called medical use. An estimated 40 million Americans now enjoy marijuana on a regular basis. And I do mean “enjoy,â€? in the same way that people enjoy a good brew. Which means that responsible adults are increasingly torching, vaping, dabbing and munching marijuana instead of cracking open a cold one. That’s right: This bud’s for you. In a sobering presentation at last week’s Brewbound craft beer industry gathering in San Diego, beverage, tobacco and cannabis analyst Vivien Azer warned attendees that their customers are already toking up. Her blunt assessment: “I think it will negatively impact alcohol consumption.â€? Sales of cannabis in legal states have topped $6 billion a year. This pales in comparison to beer, which is worth $100 billion in annual sales. First, marijuana consumption is no longer simply a matter of rolling a joint with ordinary skunk weed. Just as craft beer brewers have attracted new enthusiasts by diversifying a stale, old commodity with appealing new avors and styles, cannabis growers are broadening their market with new strains that induce a range of buzzes. But weed is just getting started, with avors like kush being the new IPA. Compared to alcohol abuse, the longterm health impacts of marijuana are inconsequential and cannabis is increasingly viewed as being safer than beer.

De h[i[hlWj_edi h[gk_h[Z There are no hangovers. Thanks to new smokeless delivery devices that include vape pens, edibles, ointments and even transdermal patches—cannabis can’t even be called harsh. And with legalization, marijuana smoke is publicly seeping into quarters that were once the domain of suds. For example, check out the tailgate scene outside the appropriately named Mile High Stadium before a Denver Broncos game and you’re apt to see fans toking up, thanks to a half-dozen dispensaries within walking distance of the parking lot. In short: marijuana has lost its deviant stigma. It is on the verge of becoming a mainstream consumer product that can compete on a level playing ďŹ eld with alcohol. This comes as booze consumption among millennials is on the decline. A study commissioned last winter by Heineken showed that three-quarters of people between the ages of 21 and 35 (prime drinking years) now limit their consumption on most occasions in which they drink. That’s mostly because, according to the study, they don’t want to lose control in a social setting—a ďŹ nding that suggests young people aren’t necessarily switching from beer to pot. Nonetheless, the threat is real. “I wouldn’t say it’s time to panic, because the anemic volume trends have been in place for a long time,â€? Azer said, as beer has long faced even bigger competition from spirits and wine. The beer industry seems uncertain what to do about it, responding with a mixed message at best. For years, big beer fought cannabis with political contributions to conservative lawmakers and heavy-duty lobbying against legalization. More recently, craft beer has welcomed it with gimmicks, including playfully subversive brand names (Magic Hat hI.P.A., Sweetwater 420), a hop-forward ale with distinctively dank aroma. Azer suggests beer makers can ďŹ ght back by focusing on underserved markets, especially Hispanics and women. My suggestion, brew masters? Focus on what cannabis can’t offer, that classic but distinctive beer avor that will always pair well with good food. SPR TWITTER: @BEER_RADAR

Mangiamo 444’s Chicken Cutlet

0

y the time someone hits 50, he or she will likely have accumulated enough memories to tab a particular period “the best time of my life.â€? Having reached that mark in January, Joe Vargas felt compelled to use those words when describing the effect that owning Mangiamo 444 has had on his existence. “I’m able to feel at ease here because I’m preparing food that’s close to me and making sure we run a family-oriented business,â€? he said. Dubbed “Joe the Boss,â€? the overseer, whose daughters, Josephine and Tatiana, help to helm the location, rules not with an iron fist but rather with a cordial heart that nurtures an affinity for Italian cuisine. Having learned the trade through his late fatherin-law, Bruno Scarsini, Vargas has logged more than two decades as a commended culinary figure, with Mangiamo 444 marking his second opportunity as an owner. “I remember telling him, ‘Yeah, I’ll try it,’â€? the businessman said of his young adulthood decision to feast on the task of becoming a kitchen dynamo. “I’ve had so many amazing experiences through my travels, so I’m glad I made the best out of his offer to help me.â€? Along with time in Philadelphia, the Fairmount native built a great name for himself in Florida, where residents adored the dishes the executive chef made at Steve Martorano’s (a Grays Ferry native and Neumann grad) Cafe Martorano. While the Sunshine State proved a delightful destination, the one-time boxer believed he could create a knockout spot back home and after landing an executive chef position for the city’s British Airways First Class Lounge, he found himself blessed to add Mangiamo 444 not only to his rĂŠsumĂŠ but also to his opportunities to preserve traditions. “I’m Hispanic, but regardless of that, Italian food is a joy for me because it sparks and keeps alive family customs,â€? Vargas said. “Plus, this is food you can eat every day. Try saying that about stuff from most other cultures.â€?

That love for creations from the Land of Love allows Vargas to fill the 70-seat space with ease, and, as 2017 looms, he is looking to expand the menu by pondering more vegetarian plates and gluten-free pastas. Those additions, he hopes, will join this week’s Chicken Cutlet submission as wellreceived options that cater to his love for South Philly-style goodness. “It’s healthy and refreshing, he said. “It’s not difficult or heavy, and it’s something that you can make at any time.

DIRECTIONS: Put the salt, pepper, and garlic on the pounded boneless chicken breasts. Flour them, place them in the egg mixture, and then finish with the breadcrumbs. Heat a small pan with the oil, and, when hot, cook the cutlets until golden. Make sure you cook both sides three to four minutes. Use a paper towel to dry them, and place on a plate. Add the spring mix, the tomato slices, salt, pepper, and oregano. Top with the olive oil, deglazed balsamic vinaigrette and provolone. SPR
