ralinger String Band, 1901 S. Third St., has its costumes and instruments ready to go and safely stored at its Pennsport clubhouse for its New Year’s Day strut up Broad Street, but the group typically rents out an area garage to allow its members more space to work on and store staging materials.

For months, a spot at Second and Wharton streets housed those belongings that its marshals typically had worked on Tuesday evenings, with plans of devoting hours every night starting next week. On Tuesday, Fralinger was anxiously waiting to see what remained of its countless hours of work after a fire ripped through the garage at 1301-11 See TWO STREET FIRE page 10

To the Editor: In January, core government functions such as scientific research, education, public safety and environmental protection will face deep cuts under budget sequestration. If lawmakers cannot put politics aside to avoid continued cuts to these programs, our nation’s security, global competitiveness, and economic growth will be compromised. Teachers will be taken out of classrooms, cutting-edge research will be stifled, and conservation of America’s natural resources will be diminished. Experts agree these essential jobs and services are not the drivers of our nation’s debt, and these federal programs have already done more than their part to reduce the deficit — cut to levels not seen since the Eisenhower presidency. I urge the president and members of Congress to work together to find a balanced approach to address the deficit and to prevent further cuts to science. Alina Freire-Fierro South Philadelphia

he motive remains unclear, but the shooter allegedly responsible for opening fire on a vehicle that contained two children in Gray Ferry, remains in jail without bail. Demarcus Tucker, 26, of North Philly, turned himself in at South Detective Division, 2301 S. 24th St., Friday, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. He was charged with Demarcus four counts of attempted Tucker murder, aggravated assault, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person; a count of possession of an instrument of crime; and various firearm violations, according to court records. Tucker allegedly shot at a 1996 turquoise Chevrolet Lumina, wounding a 30-yearold man and his 4-year-old son at 7:21 p.m. on the 2700 block of Daly Terrace, Tolliver said. The boy was wounded in the abdomen while his father was struck in his head, arm and back. The man’s 29-yearold girlfriend and her 8-year-old daughter were unharmed.

Shattered by bullets Two men fired bullets at a cabbie’s vehicle in South of South Sunday night. While driving on the 2200 block of Fitzwater Street, a 45-year-old taxi driver from Kfir Cab Co. stopped behind a 1998 white Oldsmobile at 10:32 p.m., Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. A man hopped out of the backseat of the auto and asked the cabbie to back up so the female driver could park. He did as he was asked, but the two began to bicker, causing his patrons to leave the cab. He drove around the car as he continued to argue with the man, who fired about five gunshots, three of which shattered his rear window and struck the protective glass between the front and back seats, Tolliver said. The cabbie, who was not injured, continued to 23rd and Fitzwater streets where he called 911 while the shooter and another

man fled east on Fitzwater, Tolliver said. The shooter was described as black, in his 20s, 5-foot-11; having dreadlocks; and wearing a white hoodie and dark-colored jeans. Another man, who fled with the shooter, was described as black, in his 20s, 5-foot-10 and wearing a red hoodie, black vest and dark-colored jeans. To report information, call South Detectives at 215-685-1635, text PPDTIP (773847) or visit phillypolice.com/forms.

Intersection of violence A late-night stroll left two men wounded in Grays Ferry Saturday. A 21-year-old man was headed westbound on the 2700 block of Tasker Street at 11:30 p.m. when he spotted a 32-yearold male friend, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. The two walked together, but when they approached the intersection at Etting Street, a man unknown to the younger man jumped from behind a wall on the northeast corner, pointed a black revolver at the 32-year-old and fired two shots. The younger man tried to flee, but was struck in his right shin as he ran, Tolliver said. Police located him on the 1500 block of South Marston Street, and a medic transported him to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania where he was in stable condition. Police located the 32-year-old inside Uncle Tomy’s Pizza, 1653 S. 27th St., with a gunshot to his abdomen and transported him to HUP where he was in critical but stable condition at press time. It was unclear if the older victim knew the shooter as police had not been able to interview him as of press time, Tolliver said. The motive also was unclear at press time. The offender was described as black with a medium complexion, age 24, 6-foot-1, 180 pounds and wearing a black hoodie with red trim around the hood and black pants. To report information, call South Detectives at 215-685-1635, text PPDTIP (773847) or visit phillypolice.com/forms. SPR Contact Managing Editor Amanda L. A Northeast Philly man was sentenced for robbing two women in a Newbold/ Point Breeze condo’s parking garage. Poncho Spicer, 48, pled guilty to robbing two women inside Marine Club Condominiums, 1100 S. A judge sentenced a Hawthorne man, who was convicted of voluntary manslaughter, to three decades in prison. Court of Common Pleas Judge Rose DeFino-Nastasi sentenced James Thompson, 29, of the 1200 block of Bainbridge Street, Nov. 16 to 17 to 34 years at Graterford for voluntary manslaughter, aggravated assault and carrying a firearm without a license plus five years on probation for terroristic threats relating to a incident that occurred outside of an Old City bar last year. Thompson’s manslaughter charge indicated the individual he killed provoked him, according to court records.

t age 18, Tariq Maven and two others gunned down Akiem Smith, 19, in his Cadillac DeVille at 10:36 p.m. July, 19, 2010 on the 500 block of Pierce Street. “They basically ambushed him when he was in his car and opened fire,” Assistant District Attorney Lorraine Donnelly said Wednesday. Maven pled guilty Nov. 30 to third-degree murder, conspiracy of murder and carrying a firearm without a license, for which he will serve 25 to 50 years at Montgomery County’s Graterford State Prison and must pay Smith’s $5,000 in funeral expenses, according to court records. The hostility between the two stemmed from Smith, a resident of the 1300 block of Fourth Street, being involved with the Fifth Street gang while Maven, a resident of the 500 block of Pierce Street, being a part of the Seventh Street gang. “That summer in 2010, there had been multiple shootings going back and forth, and this had been in retaliation.” Donnelly said. While Maven turned himself in to police four months after gunning down Smith and pled guilty to the crime, he did not express remorse in court. “He did not apologize to the family,” Donnelly said. “He did obviously accept responsibility for his crime.”

Thompson encountered Scoey Potter, 33, of Edgewater Park, N.J., and his then29-year-old brother inside Old City’s Bleu Martini at 1 a.m. Feb. 20, 2011, according to police. Both parties were kicked out of the bar, but the altercation didn’t end until Thompson fired shots, striking Potter once in the chest and his brother three times in the abdomen. Potter died from complications from his wound eight days later at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. Potter’s brother was paralyzed from his injuries, according to published reports. Thompson had previous arrests for narcotic and weapon offenses, and multiple probation violations, according to court records.

STADIUM CASINO continued from page 1 groups filed applications to acquire a Category 2 slot machine license for Philadelphia projects, with three desiring to construct on or along Packer Avenue. Though none of the parties with local ideas could emerge the victor, Stricker does not like the odds. “With the gross amount of loss of character, style, values and basic care I have witnessed in my life here, not to mention [Mayor Michael A.] Nutter and City Council trying to make a buck any way they can, I’d say it’s high,” the resident of 20th Street and Pattison Avenue said of the likelihood South Philly will become the home to Philly’s second license. “I’d much rather not have any site, especially one that would be so close to me.” One of the groups with local aspirations, Stadium Casino, unites Greenwood Gaming and Entertainment Inc., which oversees Bensalem’s Parx Casino and Racing, and Baltimore’s The Cordish Companies, a co-owner, along with Comcast-Spectacor, of Xfinity Live! Philadelphia, 1100 Pattison Ave. They have agreed to acquire the 240-room Holiday Inn, 900 Packer Ave., redesign and brand it as a boutique hotel and erect a 200,000-square-foot facility in front of it, according to the organizations’ impact report the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board released Nov. 27. Their project, Live! Hotel and Casino would contain 2,013 slot machines, 125 table games, a garage with 2,550 parking spaces, four restaurants, an entertainment venue and a feature bar, according to the report. Cordish President Joe Weinberg hopes to receive great feedback from the board’s pending examination of and public forums on his group’s proposal. His company, which opened Xfinity Live!, a $60 million, 55,000-square-foot entertainment district March 30, and the Greenwood principals are banking on successful pedigrees to secure the second license and add to the state’s tax revenue, which the board’s website notes as a daily endowment of $4 million. Soon after the board’s June solicitation for plans, they felt a partnership might prove profitable, as Greenwood’s three-year-old Parx grosses the most revenue among the Keystone State’s 11 casinos and Cordish’s six-month-old Maryland Live! Casino, a $500-million multi-use complex that stands as the country’s third largest commercial casino with 4,750 slot machines and electronic table games, already paces the Chesapeake Bay State’s five sites. “We analyzed all viable sites in Philadelphia, including Center City and the [Delaware] waterfront areas, and concluded that

Renovated two years ago, the Holiday Inn soon could welcome even more change in the form of an adjacent 200,000-square-foot casino. S ta f f P h o t o b y G r e g B e z a n i s

the stadium district and our site on Packer Avenue was the ideal location for the final casino site,” Weinberg said. He said his collaboration’s potential product should resonate with evaluators because of unparalleled visibility from the major highways; accessibility to SEPTA, including the Broad Street Line; the existing hotel; and the possibility of attracting to the district even more visitors, with eight million patrons taking in its nearly 400 annual occasions, according to the Sports Complex Special Services District’s website. “We are and have been very committed to South Philly, understand the dynamics of the market and, when the license was announced, felt the addition of a worldclass hotel and casino in the stadium district would create one of the most unique sports, entertainment, gaming and dining destinations in the country,” Weinberg said, adding Live! Hotel and Casino would employ approximately 1,600 people.

“In fact, the Stadium District will be the only place in the country and world where people can experience live every significant major league sport, attend concerts by international touring acts, find world-class dining and entertainment, while also being able to experience non-stop casino gaming excitement, all in one place.” He also noted the companies have sufficient liquid resources to finance the initiative, which could amount to $500 million. “We are uniquely capable of opening and operating the project in the quickest possible time frame,” he said. THE CITY’S SECOND license became available again two years ago when, after receiving numerous vows from investors to raise sufficient equity, the board revoked trust in backers of the Foxwoods Casino project, which would have operated on South Columbus Boulevard between Tasker and Reed streets. A half-dozen hopefuls are now coveting a chance to offer as

many as 5,000 slot machines and 250 table games, with representatives each having submitted letters of credit or bond worth $66.5 million to the board by the Nov. 15 deadline. PHL Local Gaming LLC has proposed to build Casino Revolution at 3333 S. Front St., which currently houses Procacci Brothers Sales Corp., a produce wholesale distributor. Wyomissing’s PA Gaming Ventures LLC hopes to construct Hollywood Casino Philadelphia at 700 Packer Ave., in the Food Distribution Center, which would join the Hollywood Casino at Penn National Race Course in Grantville, located just outside of Harrisburg. Two entities want a Center City gaming hall, while mogul Steve Wynn, whose April 2010 decision to back out as developer also hurt Foxwoods’ chances, is craving a Fishtown creation. “Since the [Pennsylvania Race Horse Development and] Gaming Act [of 2004] prescribes that the second license to be located in Philadelphia be awarded in order to further the laws’ goals to maximize tax revenue and jobs, the board felt it was proper now to begin the process,” board spokesman Doug Harbach said. “The review [of applications] has already begun and will be ongoing. We have not announced a hearing schedule as of yet. We will, however, conduct public hearings in the city in the first part of 2013.” The Live! project would be Greenwood’s second casino and Cordish’s sixth. In seeking to situate a hall by the current lodge space, the entities would honor the state’s mandate that a Category 2 casino, dubbed a “standalone” location, be more than 10 miles from a Category 1 racetrack casino, as their site would be 11 miles from the Chester-based Harrah’s Philadelphia Casino & Racetrack, Weinberg said. “I’d love a casino by the stadiums,” Tim Hasek, of Fourth and Carpenter streets said. “I understand what people say about increases in crime, and I don’t live near the facilities, so I don’t have as many concerns, but I think people will go there to avoid trouble, not to cause it.” Casino-Free Philadelphia is preparing to fight for the opposition. “Casinos profit from gambling addiction,” spokesman Dan Hajdo said. “That’s why casinos are completely unacceptable, but it is also why casinos are never the road to economic development. Never have been, never will be.” The board, Harbach said, will release the parties’ applications after thorough reviews, but Stricker has his mind settled. “It’s a long road ahead,” he said, “but one I hope ends in rejection.” SPR Contact Staff Writer Joseph Myers at jmyers@ southphillyreview.com or ext. 124. TWO STREET FIRE continued from page 1 S. Second St. and its southern neighbor, a residential property, Monday afternoon. “We were very, very lucky, Fralinger’s Chairman Steve Coper said yesterday of the $70,000 worth of tools and almost-finished props that were recovered around 1 p.m. Tuesday. “There was an inside wall that gave us some protection. What we found was most of our props intact, but they were soaked with water, which is certainly understandable. It’s far better than a total loss.” FIRE PERSONNEL WAS dispatched to the 60-by-100-foot, two-story location at 2:14 p.m. Monday, Philadelphia Fire Department Executive Chief Richard Davison said of what he referred to as an auto repair shop. The four-alarm fire was under control an hour and 33 minutes later, but an elderly neighbor was transported to a nearby hospital as a result of the flames. PECO de-energized the area at 3:29 p.m. to allow firefighters to work, resulting in lack of power for 558 customers, according to the electric supplier, which returned power to all but four customers by 9 that night. The fire marshal determined the cause of the fire, which originated at or near the rear of the property, to be faulty electrical wiring, Davison said. The City fined the property’s owner, Joseph Sigismondi, in August, Maura Kennedy, a Department of Licenses and Inspections spokeswoman, said. “He was doing auto repairs in the structure and he doesn’t have a license to do auto repairs,” she said. The City requires all motor vehicle repair shops to obtain a license specifically for that action, she added, noting that the storage of the autos is not illegal. The department received calls about Sigismondi’s unlicensed facility last year and conducted a series of inspections, Kennedy said. Sigismondi was ordered to

pay a $4,000 fine for his failure to obtain the authorization in Municipal Court. It was unknown if the site remained an illegal operation at the time of the fire, she said. Sigismondi also owes more than $37,000 in unpaid taxes from the last two years, according to the Office of Property Assessment. Preparing for worst-case scenario, the string band members had begun a mental inventory since they were unable to physically assess the damage at first. “Everyone has been waiting for almost a 24-hour period, so it’s almost euphoric — the anxiety of getting into the space,” Coper said. Upon receiving the OK to enter the building, about 30 members showed up to the garage to learn the state of their backdrop and other props and determine what must be done within the remaining 18 days leading up to the big performance. After discovering only water and smoke damage, the crew relocated everything to a warehouse near Water and Wolf streets. “It took a record performance of a halfhour to get everything out,” Coper said. Fralinger, which made its debut in front of Fralinger’s Drug Store, Second and Sigel streets, has a rich history. While an eight-year winning streak ended in 2010, its captain, Thomas D’Amore, took home first last year. Not performing was never an option for the group, which will turn 98 Tuesday, Coper said. “We have gotten a number of responses from the community, from other Mummer organizations that are happy to lend a hand or lend equipment, if needed, and local

businesses might be able to help us with certain things,” Coper, a Downingtown resident, said prior to learning the state of their items. Fralinger, which was asking for monetary assistance — not only as a string band, but also as a caring neighbor, at its website, fralinger.org — will give all funds to residents affected by the fire. “We assessed what’s damaged, as far as our equipment and props are concerned, and we would feel more comfortable donating to the residential home victims that were ousted by the fire,” Coper said. Fralinger will continue the collection effort at Sunday’s annual Santa parade down Two Street, and hopes to entertain crowds Jan. 1 as originally intended with a haunting performance.

“Without props it would have been much scarier than what we were thinking,” Coper said. “We intend to scare people in a different way — with the props.” SPR Contact Managing Editor Amanda L. Snyder at asnyder@southphillyreview.com or ext. 117. Comment at southphillyreview.com/news/features.

Walk-in Affordable Medical Care Now in South Philly Pain from a jammed finger playing flag football led the family of Mike Lobas, a local high school student, to call their doctor’s office. The pediatrician’s office was closed for the day and so Mike was taken to a local hospital emergency room (ER) by his grandmother.

Additionally, centers like Doctors Express offer far shorter wait times than emergency rooms, averaging 20 minutes, and are open 7 days a week

The ER visit resulted in a $1,500 bill. Mike’s father, angered by the amount of the bill, found that a nearby urgent care center would have charged $165 for the same care.

Patients need to be aware that there are alternatives that are far less costly and offer expert, quality care like Doctors Express. Individuals who sustain injuries or face non-life-threatening illnesses should contact their insurance providers to receive more information on urgent care centers such as Doctors Express before rushing out to a hospital emergency room.

The Lobas’ thought their ER visit would probably cost $500 maximum, not the $1,500 they were ultimately charged. As with many who have also experienced ER sticker shock, they will shop around and contact their insurance provider before they decide on which care center to choose in the future. The tenfold difference in cost between the ER visit and the urgent care center offers a compelling case for urgent care centers such as Doctors Express. Everything from a sprained ankle to a broken finger are procedures that can be taken care of by urgent care, but if a patient is experiencing heart attack like symptoms, a visit to the ER is in order.

swift diagnosis and sparing patients the hassle of traveling to a third party lab. Along with an in-house lab, Doctors Express also has on-site x-ray equipment. Recently recognized for one of his outdoor works, a Dickinson Narrows artist captures the city‘s landscape with finesse. By Jess Fuerst Review Contributor

W

hen 27-year resident of Fourth and Tasker streets Patrick Connors, now 54, attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, his tuition bill was around $1,000. “On top of that, most of us were on half or full scholarship by the second year,” Connors said. “It really freed you — the program is just great — from trying to figure out how to pay for this. As comparison, UPenn or UArts were like $3,500 a year, which is still not that much.” The artist, who was recently featured as a contest winner in PleinAir Magazine for a commissioned work, was given the freedom to pursue his craft, both in school and after — something he has done since coming to the area to train. “Philadelphia is a great city to develop as an artist. It’s inexpensive and there is a thriving arts community,” he said. “There are all these art programs and it’s rich history of art here. To this day when I wake up and walk through the town, my wife and I go, ‘It’s amazing here!’” With a penchant for painting out of doors — the meaning of “plein air”— Connors finds plenty of inspiration in his surroundings for new works. “One thing about Philadelphia— and city planners should always take this into consideration — it’s a very paintable city. You can go anywhere, set up an easel and paint,” Connors said. “Manhattan is wonderful, but Central Park, it does not have the vistas that Fairmount Park has. You look down the Schuylkill, or by [Fairmount] Water Works, then there’s that wonderful walk down to Columbia Bridge.” The bridge is, in fact, the subject of the PleinAir Salon contest winning work, “After a Storm,” that covers a 24-by-36-inch canStaff photo by Greg Bezanis

Lifestyles vas, which is one of Connors largest undertakings and was what he describes as a real breakthrough work. “You could submit a number of paintings and that was an important painting for me. I said it was a breakthrough painting for me,” he said of his PleinAir Salon interview. “It was among the first large paintings I did that I felt I was getting the feeling I wanted. “With plein air, one of the characteristics, a desire, is its freshness. You want to feel that you look and say, yes, I was out in that field. You are re-experiencing what the painter has experienced. Though, if you look at the piece, it is more studied or intellectual than that, but it has the appeal of plein air.” Connors maintains Philly imbues works with its own essence and, to that, Connors adds his own artistic purpose and crafting. “[Painting in Philly] lends to a contemplative moment for both the painter and the viewers; something that might cause a moment of thought, of pause,” he said. “I don’t have social agendas. The poetry in the painting is if I can just get people to start thinking about it, stop and start musing on life, that would be good.” FROM FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va., Connors was selected by his high school art teacher to

complete the Smithsonian’s printmaking apprenticeship. After schooling in this discipline, he matriculated at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts because of the reputation of a few faculty, as well as his own desire to explore other mediums. “There I trained primarily with two instructors, Arthur De Costa and Ben Kamihira. I had seen their work and it was — out of all the work I’d been looking at — the ones that spoke volumes about what I was interested in doing, that type of emotive quality. It just called up mysteries of life, in a very profound way,” he said. Training with De Costa and Kamihira, Connors was afforded an immersive two years of education in the program that required students to take drawing, painting, and sculpting, among other techniques. He would eventually finish out his four-year certificate and then matriculate at the University of Pennsylvania under the established program ties between the two institutions. “Besides being a painter I wanted to go into science, so I did the sciences and calculus,” Connors said of the two years he spent at UPenn. “While I was there, I was working in the med school doing research in pharmacology.” Adept at this, as well, the lab eventually hired Connors when he received his bachelor’s — a job he accepted but soon realized was not his true calling.

“I had gone into it and gotten caught up in the research … eventually I thought, ‘What would I regret not having done?” he said. “I realized I would regret not trying art, giving it a shot. “I saved up money and I became a busboy. I was probably the only busboy that had published works in the medical journals. But it was great. I was able to work at night and paint during the day.” Through the years Connors honed his skills and garnered a following for his work. People began to commission his work and the artist found he liked this more than he anticipated. “It was a lot of work [keeping up with the demands of the galleries]. I began commissioned work, doing more and more, and seeing where it took me. I liked the idea of people contacting me for specific paintings, and they knew my work,” Connors, who exhibited most often in New York City, said. “I was worn out with the nature of galleries and the idea I would be working intensely on an idea just appealed to me and it still does.” Today, Connors keeps a full plate of commissions, though never more than a handful at a time, as well as teaching obligations at the New York Academy of Art and the Institute of Classical Architecture and Art, both in Manhattan. “I got out of teaching. I felt it took too

much energy,” Connors said of his first instructing role, which he held when finishing University. “I thought quite selfishly, but justifiably, I wanted this energy for myself. I thought, in 10, 15 years, maybe then I’ll have enough experience I can start giving it to the students. And that’s what happened.” With these pursuits to keep him busy, Connors still has amassed a collection of works he painted while teaching for the Architecture Institute on the two-week intensive he hosts in Rome, Italy every June. These works, mostly plein-air paintings, will be the subject of a planned upcoming gallery show, most likely, the artist said, taking place in the new year in New York. Despite the draw of New York for exhibition purposes, and perhaps inspiration as well, Connors remains firmly planted in South Philly, knowing that this city will always be a favorite muse. “There’s a reason painters like Eakins were just drawn to painting those early rowing paintings. Despite his talent and his genius, there is something in the way the light strikes the water; it gets caught up in all the atmosphere and does these wonderful things,” he said “It’s a special quality, this atmospheric quality, that is singularly Philadelphian — it’s hard to resist painting it.” SPR Comment at southphillyreview.com/news/lifestyles.

The Costas controversy

T

he world turned upside down for some sports fans a couple of weeks ago when Bob Costas spoke about the problem of too many gun deaths in America during halftime of NBC’s “Sunday Night Football.” Costas brought the gun issue up in relation to the murdersuicide that week of Kansas City Chiefs player Jovan Belcher and his girlfriend. There is an unwritten rule in the world of sports that you never allow controversial real world issues to intrude in the fantasy world of sports. As if to emphasize that point, the Chiefs went ahead with their scheduled game just 28 hours after Belcher murdered his girlfriend and then shot himself in the parking lot of the team’s facilities while his coach and general manager looked on in horror. A bunch of folks (not all of them members of the National Rifle Association) complained that halftime of a football game was the wrong time to address the gun-control issue. Some went further and questioned the credentials of Costas, a sportscaster, to even comment at all. He ended his commentary with a quote from sports columnist Jason Whitlock in which he said if there had been no guns in the Belcher household, both the athlete and his girlfriend would be alive today. First let’s set the record straight. Costas is not just the premier sports commentator of our time, he has also hosted shows where the content was not limited to sports (“Costas Coast To Coast” and later “Costas on the Radio”). You can agree or disagree with him on the issue, but please don’t act as if there is a right and a wrong time to discuss this issue. Costas did not gratuitously decide to talk about gun issues. Athletes and guns have long been linked, often with disastrous consequences. If the subject had been exactly the same, but instead Costas supported the NRA position, I’m willing to bet the complaints instead would have come mostly from gun-control supporters and NRA members would be wildly supporting Costas right to free speech. As a boss of mine used to say, “Where you stand often depends upon where you sit.” The gun issue is one of the most important social issues facing America today, but the strength of the NRA has pretty much silenced any politicians support of gun control, except in the safest districts. President Barack Obama was conspicuously silent on

■ s o u t h p h i l l y r e v i e w.c o m

the issue during the past presidential campaign. It seems as if in America there never is a right time to have an intelligent debate about gun laws. Gun enthusiasts often use gun jargon to prove their critics don’t know their subject. The NRA argument has become standard boilerplate — quote the Second Amendment, enforce laws already on the books, and assume any further attempt at sensible gun legislation will inevitably lead to guns being taken away from private citizens and only serve to leave weapons in the hands of criminals. Consider these statistics — there are more than 300 million guns legally owned in America, which has a population of 310 million. This figure does not include guns sold illegally. One out of every two households has at least one gun. Gun ownership per capita in our country is by far the highest in the world — nearly double that of Yemen and triple that of Iraq. In the US, one out of every 240 Americans is likely to be murdered. In 2009, according to a National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care survey, there were 18,735 suicides by handgun. I don’t believe in confiscating legally owned guns in this country. My father kept a weapon in his home long after he retired from the police force. He also was a responsible gun owner. I don’t want hunters or gun collectors deprived of their rights, but semi-automatic weapons have no legitimate place in the hands of private citizens in America. I do take exception with the Costas/ Whitlock statements that had there been no guns in the Belcher household, both he and his girlfriend would be alive today. I understand a gun in the household becomes doubly dangerous during domestic disputes, as it does for any argument anywhere. I also understand it is easier for a severely depressed person to commit suicide if there is easy access to a gun. But days after Costas made his sweeping statement, there was a news report of a violent domestic dispute that ended in tragedy and the weapon of choice was a kitchen knife. Access simply to sleeping pills, a belt or a gas range can lead to suicide if folks really want to end their lives. So, no, I don’t believe any of us can say with any assurance that Belcher and his girlfriend would be alive today if there had been no gun in the household. Just as I don’t believe that every time there is a report of a gun owner defending his or her household successfully from a home invasion means we should conclude the victims might not be alive today if they had not had a gun in their home. We can have stricter requirements for legally obtaining a gun. We can ban the types of weapons that have no place except on a battlefield. Let’s have the debate. Even at halftime of a football game. Gandalf (Ian McKellen), from left, and Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) are central figures in the latest saga from director Peter Jackson.

A journey worth taking By R. Kurt Osenlund Movie Reviewer

N

early all doubts about Peter Jackson’s “The Hobbit,” which has received much early derision for its perhaps-excessive extension into a trilogy, quickly diminish within mere moments of the first installment’s duration, which feels surprisingly nimble through the whopping span of 169 minutes. With almost a decade having passed since “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy wrapped, it’s been easy for one to forget the enveloping magic of Jackson’s Middle Earth. In “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” that magic comes rushing back in earnest, so much so that “Rings” fans will feel the welcome warmth of a longvacant void filling up. Like J.R.R. Tolkien’s beloved book, the film kicks off the story of Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman), the furry-footed uncle of “Rings” hero Frodo (Elijah Wood), whose adventure would come some 60 years after this far more frolicsome prequel. Yet, rather than hew very closely to the text, Jackson and his returning team of wizards opt to tell a tangential tale, both branching off of, and setting the scene for, Frodo and company’s forthcoming saga. It’s simply another adventure in the land of elves and orcs, where near-unparalleled cinematic wonder awaits. Back on the screen are Gandalf (Ian McKellen), Galadriel (Cate Blanchett), Elrond (Hugo Weaving) and Saruman (Christopher Lee), whose liberal inclusion points to the troubles ahead. There’s also a lively crew of dwarves, led by heroic Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage), whose people must reclaim their home from the dreaded dragon Smaug. It’s readily apparent why the “Hobbit” films could not have been made first,

before the “Rings” films enchanted the world, and before fantasy and musical numbers were firmly back in vogue. The dwarves are jovial folk that require a bit more patience from the audience, and their penchant for song may well have been scoffed at in the pre-“Glee” era. But with Jackson’s fanbase firmly established, this new sojourn is wonderfully embraceable, even if it isn’t quite the masterful spectacle of its predecessors. Once again, Jackson casts a widescreen spell that feels singular and essential.

Recommended Rental Red Hook Summer R Available Dec. 21

Though it disappointingly adheres to some tired plot conventions, Spike Lee’s “Red Hook Summer” sees the master auteur return to his Brooklyn roots, in a way that recalls his magnum opus, “Do the Right Thing.” Telling of an Atlanta teen (Jules Brown) spending the summer with his grandfather (Clarke Peters), the film deftly explores a generational divide, where religion, idealism and modernity merge, and can hopefully coexist with some semblance of understanding. A divisive flick, but essential for Lee fans. SPR Comment and see the trailers for this week’s movies at southphillyreview.com/arts-and-entertainment/movies.

Leslie’s Easiest-Ever Chili

Servings of pre-holiday fun

C

hili tends to be a popular offering any time of year. Some like it prepared on the hot-and-spicy side while others prefer it mild. Leslie Martin simply refers to her recipe as the Easiest Ever Chili. While it may be tough to prove, the resident of the 1300 block of Castle Avenue does keep her recipe simple with her three-step process of browning the meat, adding the flavor and simmering. Once the meal is complete, feel free to judge as to whether or not the recipe lives up to its billing. SPR

meat, which had a delicately creamy texture, and baked in the oven. The fish sat on a pool of butter sauce and came with a small mound of simple sautéed spinach. We noticed a choice of two sides were on offer with any wood fired entrée. Although Edward and I did not select a wood-fired item, curried carrots ($5) caught my attention, so we ordered them a la carte. One taste and I thought this was the most innovative use of carrots since I sprinkled some ginger on cooked carrots and thought it was fancy. Chunks of orange, yellow and purple carrots were doused with a proper curry and heated in a cast-iron pan in the oven. Curry can be overpowering, but the chefs got it right with a light hand. Double Bag ($5), brewed in Vermont, while our server recommended a glass of Gruner Veltliner ($13), a light fragrant white wine from Austria, for me. the horseradish, however, as it is truly sinus cleansing. Big, hot steaming bowls of New England clam chowder ($8) warmed us up. Traditional recipes call for bacon or fat back to be crisped before the fresh clams, potatoes, onion, celery, stock and rich cream are added to the pot. Route 6’s version was spot on. The smoky flavor of bacon enhanced all of the small, diced vegetables. Route 6 just might be the only restaurant to offer a fried seafood combination dish. The large, round fisherman’s platter ($26) was covered in brown paper to blot up any excess oil, but none of the fish and shellfish was one bit greasy. This generous dinner, which two people could easily share, consisted of a mound of fried calamari; a piece of Jersey fluke flounder, a thicker and meatier variety; scallops; shrimp; a small, tin bucket of crispy, piping-hot French fries; the aforementioned cocktail sauce; homemade tartar sauce; and a ramekin of homemade coleslaw. Much care was taken in frying the seafood, although Edward thought it was a tad too salty. I especially liked the seasoned crumbs used to coat each piece of fish and could actually see and taste the tiny specks of fresh herbs used in the mixture. I cannot recall the last time I saw flounder stuffed with crab imperial on a menu. My stuffed Jersey flounder ($26) was carefully prepared with large lumps of fresh crabmeat mixed, lightly seasoned and formed into an oval shape. Fillets of flounder were wrapped around the crab-

hen Edward and I were growing up, people flocked to Old Original Bookbinder’s in Society Hill and Fisher’s Restaurant on North Broad Street. Both restaurants are gone, but Stephen Starr has resurrected good simple fish and shellfish fare, albeit pricey, at Route 6. The décor has captured a Cape Cod feel with soft gray and beige tones. The ceiling looks like a wooden deck, the lighting is just right and we were fortunate on the night we visited that the noise level was perfect. Edward and I settled into a black, woodtop table for four and were surprised at the simplicity of many dishes on the bill of fare. Starr is known as an innovator when it comes to fine dining, but I was happy to see classic, raw, bar offerings. Edward sipped a martini ($10) and I had a Rob Roy ($12) while we chatted about the menu. A selection of wood-fired fish, including wild Atlantic swordfish and Scottish salmon intrigued me. There were so many dishes I wanted to sample, Edward and I decided to see how Route 6 chefs prepared classic dishes from our childhoods. A dozen cherrystone clams ($21) were nestled onto a big platter of crushed ice with lemon wedges and a terrific cocktail sauce topped with a bit of horseradish. Sometimes cocktail sauce is too sweet, but this one hit the mark. Edward said it was the best he had ever tasted. A Mason jar filled with small, round, crispy nuggets, which looked like Irish potatoes, provided a savory crunch. Take care with

Welcoming holiday party guests with a smorgasbord of small bites is the simplest way to spread seasonal cheer. Phyllis Stein-Novack Food Columnist

■ Cheese Straws ■

Ingredients:

1 pound of puff pastry 3/4 cup of grated Parmesan

Note from Phyllis: This recipe can be easily doubled.

Ingredients:

1 14-ounce bag of Pepperidge Farm herb seasoned stuffing mix 1 16-ounce bag of frozen spinach, defrosted, all water squeezed out Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste 2 eggs, beaten Sprinkling of ground nutmeg 1 cup of grated Parmesan 1 stick of unsalted butter, melted

Directions: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Place all of the ingredients in a large mixing bowl and blend well. Form into pieces about the size of a golf ball and place on an ungreased baking sheet. Bake in the oven for about 20 minutes or until the edges are a slight golden brown. Makes about 20 to 25 spinach balls.

■ Mustard Sauce ■

Ingredients;

1 cup of Hellmann’s mayonnaise 1/2 cup of Greek yogurt 1/2 cup of Dijon 1/2 cup of dry white wine Juice of 1 lemon Fresh dill, snipped

■ Chocolate Truffles ■

Ingredients:

1/4 cup of heavy cream 2 tablespoons of Grand Marnier, brandy or any liqueur 6 ounces of German’s sweet chocolate, broken up 4 tablespoons of sweet butter, softened Powdered unsweetened cocoa, for topping

Directions: Boil the cream in a small heavy pan until reduced to 2 tablespoons. Remove from the heat, stir in Grand Marnier and chocolate and return to low heat. Stir until the chocolate melts. Whisk in the softened butter. When the mixture is smooth, pour into a shallow bowl and refrigerate for about 40 minutes. Scoop the chocolate up with a teaspoon and shape into 1-inch balls. Roll the truffle balls in the unsweetened cocoa. Store the truffles, covered, in the refrigerator. Let the truffles stand at room temperature for 30 minutes before serving. Directions: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Roll out the puff pastry dough into a 20-by-24-inch rectangle. Sprinkle half of the cheese evenly over the dough and gently press the cheese into the dough with a rolling pin. Fold the dough in half crosswise, roll out again to 20-by-24 inches and sprinkle on the remaining cheese. Using a sharp knife, cut the dough into one-half-inch strips. Take each strip by its ends and twist until evenly corkscrewed. Lay the twists of dough on an ungreased baking sheet, arranged so that they are just touching each other. Bake until the straws are crisp, puffed and brown, for about 15 minutes. Let cool for five minutes, then cut apart with a sharp knife. Cool on a rack and store in an airtight container. Makes about 20 straws.

■ Spinach Balls ■

Directions: Place all of the ingredients in a mixing bowl and blend well. Cover and refrigerate for at least four hours or overnight. When ready to serve, place the dipping sauce into a pretty serving bowl. Makes about two cups.

he holiday season is in full swing and some of you are planning an open house. Whether the party is during the afternoon or takes place at the cocktail hour, a few hints and easy recipes are in order to insure a relaxed and spirited time for all. A roasted turkey breast and spiral ham can fill the center of the table along with rolls for those who want to make a sandwich. I enjoy special treats that pop up at parties because I only serve them on special occasions. Guest enjoy them as well. Thin slices of Nova Scotia salmon served on buttered rye or pumpernickel have been served at our house for many years. You also should offer a cheese platter with plain water crackers. I like serving an artisan Vermont cheddar, Brie, Roquefort or imported Gorgonzola and fontina from Italy. Decorate the platter with bunches of grapes and clementine segments. I also prepare at least five pounds of shrimp, cool and peel them, place them in a pretty glass bowl and serve with cocktail sauce laced with horseradish. “The Silver Palate Cookbook” by Julee Rosso and Sheila Lukins, is one of my favorites and I look to it for recipe ideas. I’ve been making their Cheese Straws for years, which are popular with our guests. I also have included their recipe for Chocolate Truffles. They are so easy to make, kids will have fun joining in the prepara-

tion. Edward’s hands-down favorite are my Spinach Balls. They can be prepared ahead of time and refrigerated for a few days. I like to serve them with a Mustard Dipping Sauce. In fact, I am bringing them to a holiday party tomorrow afternoon.

Warriors as a wide receiver and a nose tackle. Seeking to duplicate his ironman success with Neumann-Goretti, he had to change course and focus only on defense at first. “I did whatever I needed to help this team,” Custis said of losing his elementary duality. Following his sophomore campaign, the Saints hired C.J. Szydlik, who expanded his role, giving him blocking and catching duties as a tight end. “I had not wanted to play offense but warmed up to the idea,” the teenager said. “I saw it as a chance to learn more about

student-athlete has enjoyed the selection cycle, as it has taught him never to doubt his potential. “I had not thought I would ever play college football,” Custis, whom schools such as Boston College and the University of Miami also found appealing, said. “I just wanted to see what fun I could get out of the game.” He began his pigskin career as a member of the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Youth Organization squad. Then an eighth grader at St. Thomas Aquinas School, 1719 Morris St., he enjoyed the game’s aggressive aspects and helped the

CUSTIS PROVED A blessing for last season’s Saints, snaring 11 balls for 289 yards and seven receiving touchdowns, earning First-Team All Catholic honors. Though they registered just four victories and suffered their fifth straight losing season, he sensed an imminent turnaround, and his teammates made him look like Nostradamus this year. “I really felt we were ready to surprise some people,” Custis, who also earned a First-Team defensive designation last year, which he capped by scoring three touchdowns in the Turkey Bowl against South Philadelphia High School, 2101 S. Broad St., said. The Saints struggled this year against their parochial brethren, claiming one triumph from four contests, but five wins in seven non-league battles helped them to compile a 6-5 mark, sealing their site’s first winning season since ’06. “We enjoyed being able to back up our belief with some solid efforts,” Custis, who picked up a First-Team multi-purpose selection and Second-Team tight end and defensive line plaudits, said. The proud performer last suited up for Neumann-Goretti Thanksgiving morning, leading the Saints to a 21-12 victory over the Rams. The triumph allows him to graduate undefeated against his school’s Lower Moyamensing rival and gave him an extra boost of bravado, as he claimed MVP honors for catching two passes for 23 yards and delivering key blocks. “I’m glad this year came together and wish the best to next year’s guys,” Custis, who finished as the team’s second-leading receiver behind junior target Jamal Custis, his brother and fellow First- and SecondTeam honoree, said. With UMass his likely pick, Custis feels more relaxed about the remainder of his senior year and will focus on his school work and his first season as a varsity basketball player. “I have enjoyed this year so far and think it can get even better,” he said. hen he enters the professional world, Sharif Custis might do so as an engineer, owing to his interests in building. As a collegiate, the 18-year-old will first need to work on rebuilding, as he verbally committed Dec. 2 to the University of Massachusetts, an institution known far more for academic ascendancy than football formidability. The senior at Ss. Neumann-Goretti High School, 1736 S. 10th St., will look to make the Minutemen lasting contenders and have them join the Saints as squads he has helped to improve. “I had been thinking about UMass for some time,” the resident of the 1500 block of South 32nd Street said last week at his East Passyunk Crossing secondary site, adding that Nov. 30’s official visit to its Amherst campus halted a recruiting process that had included Stony Brook and Temple universities. “I like the staff and players and hope to earn a chance to play early.” Had the 6-foot-4 athlete chosen to matriculate at the North Broad Street school, he would have become his family’s second contributor to the Owls, as brother Kadeem Custis, a 2009 Neumann-Goretti alumnus, played four seasons for the area bunch. Though the younger Custis enjoys the idea of rejuvenating teams and certainly would have received opportunities to aid the Owls, who following last year’s 9-4 season, which included their program’s first bowl victory in 32 years, slumped to a 4-7 mark in their inaugural Big East campaign, he felt modifying Massachusetts, a 1-11 unit, would offer more challenges. “I like that the team is rebuilding,” the Grays Ferry native said of his likely postsecondary squad, whose 152 points for and 482 points against both ranked the worst among Mid-American Conference squads. “Being there will make me focus more, want it more and help me to grow and encourage the other players.” Though Custis could change his mind and make another suitor happy to inherit his imposing frame and curious brain, he believes he has found his next destination. If that mentality remains, he could give written intent next month or in the spring. No matter his final decision, the
