Army tops Navy, 14-13, as heated rivalry gets covered in snow

was a public school student. I was also raised Catholic. That meant that in order to get Holy Communion and Confirmation I had to attend what we called “instructions” in the early 1950s. I’m not sure why – maybe it was because both of my grandfathers lived in the vicinity of 9th and Wolf – or because I had friends in that neighborhood, but I wanted to go to elementary school near there. I gave the address of one of my grandparents – something that wasn’t uncommon then, and was able to attend Francis Scott Key School. In that way, I was also able to attend Epiphany Church. I guess you could say that I was a 9th and Wolf wannabe. I liked Key School. I was a pretty good student. Also went to church regularly at Epiphany. Got caught up in religion so much so that when I heard one of relatives or friends curse, I would say a “good act of contrition” under my breath. One time I got caught doing so by a tough kid in the neighborhood who confronted me. “You sayin’ prayers?” he yelled at me. I weakly denied that I was doing so. Then said “a good act of See CARDELLA, page 11>>

Local shops offer holiday gift options galore By Tom Beck SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

s the holidays inch closer and South Philadelphians scramble to find presents for friends and family, small businesses in the South Philadelphia community have a variety of gift

ideas for local holiday shoppers. Tilidie’s Toy Box, 1829 E. Passyunk Ave., a toy shop that specializes in gender-neutral toys, has a variety of fun games and toys for children. According to salesperson Amber Zaraza, Micro Maxi scooters are some of this holiday shopping season’s most popular buys. The scooter comes in three models. There’s

the 2go scooter, which is for children aged 18 months to two years; the micro scooter, which is for children ages 2-5; and the maxi scooter, which is for children ages 5-12. Op-Ed

High schoolers grade performance of district’s state senator

We are residents of Philadelphia and students of Julia R. Masterman High School. Sen. Lawrence Farnese is a Democratic member of the Pennsylvania Senate and he represents our district, the 1st District. As concerned members of our community, we are writing to express our thoughts on Sen. Farnese’s views. We will discuss his stance on women’s rights concerning street harassment and abortion and his concerns about the Gaming Legislation and gun reform. We wholeheartedly agree with Sen. Farnese on the issue of street harassment. He demands more attention and resources because it is progressively becoming more and more prevalent in today’s society and culture. The issue is slowly garnering more awareness and support through the #MeToo and other social media campaigns, however, it is surely not enough action for things to actually change. We would also like to acknowledge how the number of men, especially young men and boys, who are being exposed to this type of society has increased. It’s crazy how this problem has become normalized in our society as a part of our culture. We admire how much Sen. Farnese supports the prevention of street harassment and how he always tries to promote and create safer environments for women in Philadelphia. By promoting safer environments and exposing children to education about resistance and a culture of consent, today’s social attitudes will undoubtedly change and cause a shift in cultural norms. Other ways that street harassment can be prevented include more public awareness campaigns in schools and in the public, more ways of reporting harassment, and better trained police. On the controversial issue of abortion, Sen. Farnese opposes Senate Bill 3 and supports a woman’s right to choose. We agree with Sen. Farnese. Senate Bill 3, which bans abortion after 20 weeks leaving no exceptions for rape, incest and fetal health abnormalities and criminalizes this safe medical procedure, leaves women in a helpless position. We agree that those who think abortion is wrong are free to make that choice for themselves, but no one has the right to make that choice for someone else. Behind the prosperous mask, Philadelphia is swamped with poverty. As residents of Philadelphia, we have seen people from all socioeconomic backgrounds and some families just do not have the financial stability to raise a child. We believe that women should at least have the right to decide to bear a child if they can support that child. No mother would want to bring her child into a world of suffering. Although this bill has been passed, we hope that Sen. Farnese and more people will continue to advocate for a woman’s right to choose and for the choice to be in the hands of the mother and not in those of legislators.

We support Sen. Farnese’s push for commonsense gun reform. In view of the recent massacres in Texas and Las Vegas, it has become increasingly important to interrupt the proliferation of guns in our city, our state, and our country. We think it is absolutely ludicrous for an average citizen to possess military-type weapons. Thus, we fully support Sen. Farnese’s stance on an assault weapons ban which could prevent any further mass shootings. After reading and studying what might be the cause(s) of mass shootings, we’ve come to the conclusion that the only thing that has a direct correlation with gun violence is gun ownership. Not crime, race, or even mental health. It is with enthusiasm that we write in support of the legislation of Senate Bill 311 (which requires a safety training course before a concealed weapon permit is given) as well as mandatory minimum sentencing for illegal firearm possession. We want to urge everyone to become or continue being forceful voices for gun control and public safety such as Sen. Farnese. As students of the School District of Philadel-

phia, we experience the effects of budget cuts and how they limit the resources that would improve the quality of our education. We hope that Sen. Farnese will focus more on our city’s education system. A stable budget has become rare; each school year students, teachers, and school administrators alike worry about how much more the budget will be cut. The budget cut would then tell us how many teachers will be relocated and due to the lack of teachers, we end up with fewer options for AP courses compared to high schools in other districts. Without the contributions from parents, whether it be through donations or volunteering their time to oversee the library, our academic experience would be limited. We were excited to hear about the passage of House Bill 271, the Gaming Legislation, and about the amount of funding that would go toward the School District and the city. In hopes of generating more revenue, we support tablet gaming at airports. However, we are concerned that tablet gaming may end up in our neighborhood corner stores. We do not want children to be exposed to gambling or influence them in any way. The close proximity of

casinos already arise problems by severing families, we do not want to make gambling more accessible. We appreciate Sen. Farnese’s efforts in fighting for economic development funding from gaming local shares and we anticipate to see more improvements around the city and in schools. We look forward to seeing progress on women’s rights issues, common-sense gun reform, and economic development funding with the help of Sen. Farnese and other representatives. We hope our concerns are heard and we want these standards enforced for the betterment of our government and our country. Thank you for making our voice heard. Jacquelyn Chow and Joey Zhao Masterman High School seniors

Charles Santore Jr. to speak at library named for father By Bill Gelman SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

T

he Friends of the Charles Santore Library have initiated a speaker series that will feature notable individuals who have enriched the community in many ways. The first of these events will take place on Saturday, Dec. 16, at 3 p.m. with an appearance by Charles Santore Jr. – the son and namesake of the famous Philadelphian for whom our library located at 7th and Carpenter streets was renamed in 2004. Book sale proceeds will directly benefit the library and its programs. Queen Village’s Head House Books will be on hand to sell copies of Charles Santore’s books. South Philadelphia native Charles Santore Sr., was born in 1910. He was

a former boxer, Republican ward leader, and the founder of Municipal Employees Union Local 696. At the time of his death, he was the oldest active ward leader in any party. The Southwark Library was renamed the Charles Santore Library in 2004 to honor this renowned citizen of the community. His son was born in Philadelphia in 1935, and is an award-winning American illustrator best known for his children’s books. He won the Hamilton King award from the New York Society of Illustrators in ’72, and

his book “William the Curious” was honored in the 1998 Storytelling World Stories for PreAdolescent Listeners category. His most popular works include celebrity portraits that he completed for TV Guide. Call 215686-1766. … The Philadelphia Sheriff’s Office will conduct its holiday gunlock giveaway on Friday, Dec. 15, at several locations around the city, including at 24th Street and Oregon Avenue, from 2-4 p.m. Deputies will distribute free safety locks to prevent children from being

wounded and/or killed in accidental shootings involving unsecured firearms. Guns kill nearly 1,300 American children every year. In West Philadelphia, a 3-year old girl shot herself in November after finding a loaded, unlocked gun belonging to her father. It was the third accidental shooting involving children in the previous three months, including a 3-year-old boy who accidentally shot his uncle after finding a gun in the family car in Center City, and an 11-year-old boy who shot himself in the face in South Philadelphia. A 2014 report from the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia Research Institute cites the US General Accounting Office estimate that 31 percent of accidental firearms deaths could be prevented if gun owners used a gunlock and a loading indicator. “We know that some of these tragic

events could have been prevented by making sure these firearms are secured and stored safely,” Philadelphia Sheriff Jewell Williams said. “If you have a gun, you need a lock.” … St. Nicholas of Tolentine Church, 910 Watkins St., is inviting the public to attend a Christmas celebration of candlelight prayer and caroling on Dec. 20 at 7 p.m. Refreshments will follow in the school hall. Call 215-463-1326. On a sad note, the 9th Street Italian Market lost a longstanding member of its community as Louis Esposito Jr., 95, the second-generation owner of Esposito’s Meats, passed away at the age of 95. The viewing and funeral were held last Wednesday, and included a ceremonial procession through the Italian Market. Esposito’s is a South Philadelphia institution that has been around since 1911.

tures, similar to Legos. Bath bombs, small, baseball-sized balls that turn water different colors when placed into a bathtub, are another top seller for the store. “These make great stocking stuffers,” said Zaraza. For adults, there’s Fante’s Kitchen Shop, 1006 S. 9th St. Some of the most popular items being sold at Fante’s this holiday season are All-Clad, Soapstone and Le Creuset cookware, according to Livia Ottaviani, the store’s manager. In addition to cookware, multi-cookers and pizzelle irons have proven to be top sellers as of late, said Ottaviani. For music lovers, there are always vinyl records, which have surprisingly made a big comeback in recent years. One of the most notable record stores in the city, Repo Records, 506 South St., carries a wide selection. Owner Dan Matherson said Christmas records from the likes of Phil Spector and Frank Sinatra would make great holiday gifts. In addition to Christmas records, recent releases from artists such as Tyler the Creator, Thom Yorke and Belle and Sebastian have proven to be popular purchases as of late. The store also carries record players from Audio-Technica. One thing representatives from all the stores agree on is that it’s important to support local small businesses. “The [small businesses] are part of the neighborhood,” said Matherson. “It’s a place you can go to all the time and interact with people who do stuff for you. I think it’s just dangerous that these big box stores like Amazon and all the other big box stores are kind of taking over everything. It’s just not the same. … And I hate shopping at those box stores. I

think they’re so impersonal.” “You’re supporting families who are supporting other people in the community” when you shop at small businesses, said Ottaviani. “The dollars tend to stay in the community rather than go outwards into the vast majority of places. But, you know, people who are employed here are are spending money supporting their community and buying food and all of these things. Basically just keeping it

all local.” Customer service is an area where small businesses claim to have an advantage over big box stores. “We’re all human beings. You can call us – we have people call us all the time,” said Ottaviani. “There’s the human touch that you miss in a lot of those [big box] stores. Everyone here knows how to use every piece and item in the store.”

“Things like Amazon are definitely a concern and they definitely aren’t helping us in any way,” said Michelle Gillen-Doobrajh, who owns Tildie’s Toy Box. “One of my favorite things to do is to help the customers pick out a gift or help a child find something. Maybe point out something that they wouldn’t have been drawn to normally.” However, customers currently cannot purchase toys from Tildie’s online. The company has a website, but doesn’t sell its toys on it. Gillen-Doobrajh called the popularity of online shopping “a concern for us.” “A lot of people even mention to us in the store that they do shop online,” Gillen-Doobrajh said, “but what we really pride ourselves on in here is great customer service and really educating our customers.”

REMEMBER WHEN

Countdown to New Year’s Day

W

hen it comes to New Year’s Day, the Mummers Parade is a grand-oldPhiladelphia tradition that dates back to 1901. At least that is the year of the first formal, city-sponsored event. It also holds the distinction of being the oldest continuous folk parade in the United States. Come Jan. 1, 2018, all of the brigades will once again strut their stuff down South Broad. Like previous years, readers can look forward to the South Philly Review’s expanded Mummers Guide,

which will be hitting doorsteps on Dec. 27. This special edition will include the parade route, marching order, a Q&A with the Fancy Brigade captains, Mummers history along with several other features. While the groups are all putting the finishing touches on their respective routines, here are a couple of old-time photos to help trigger those memories from past parades. More than 900 adults and children attended the event led by Barbara Capozzi. The day of family fun included a visit from Eagles mascot Swoop, face painters, balloon artists, photo booth provided by Mr. Magic, Felicia Punzo singing Christmas favorites, and, of course, Santa and his elves, who provided gifts to all children in attendance. Looking for ways to give back? Here are a few You can help spread Christmas cheer through a number of charity efforts By Tom Beck

F

SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

or many, the holiday season is a reason to give back to your friends and family. But for some people, that’s sometimes not enough. For them, the holiday season isn’t just about giving back to your friends and family but giving back to strangers in need as well. If you’re one of those people, we’ve rounded up a few worthy causes for you to reach out to over the next few weeks.

Circle Thrift Circle Thrift has two locations: one in Fishtown and another right in South Philly at the corner of Broad and Ellsworth. Circle Thrift is a thrift store that’s affiliated with the Circle of Hope church, and it accepts virtually anything that’s new or gently used. “The only things we don’t accept are large appliances, but pretty much anything else we’ll take a look at, said store manager Aaron Foltz. Circle Thrift is more than just any thrift store though. In fact, the store gives about $40,000 in vouchers to various social services agencies around the city. The social services agencies will give the vouchers to people in need, and they can spend the vouchers at Circle Thrift. With the money it makes, the store will donate to various organizations, such as the Mennonite Central Committee, which is a global organization that does things like support maternal and newborn nutrition, improves women’s and girls’ health, fight diseases and fight many other issues around the world. The thrift store even helps the local community. For instance, it recently purchased a new sound system for nearby Francis Scott Key Elementary School. Some of the most commonly donated items are books, furniture and clothes. If you’re looking to donate to the South Philly store, visit the store at 1125 S. Broad St. For more information, visit circlethrift.com.

Young Chances Foundation “YCF [Young Chances Foundation] was created in 2011 to give the youth and young adults an opportunity to participate in programs and resources that will keep them off the wrong track while dealing with issues with positive conflict resolution

techniques and resources to have a better quality of life in their community, said Tyrique Glasgow, the founder and executive director of Young Chances. “YCF youth participate in monthly community service projects and with local agencies, law enforcement and faithbased groups to see alternative and diverse programs available for them. This holiday season, the foundation is hosting a toy drive for children in need. “The toy drive purpose is to collect toys and items for youth in the South Philadelphia area to be distributed to local youth and families for the holidays, said Glasgow. “This helps fill some of the small holes that some of the families need filled during every holiday season. Educational supplies, food, clothing, toys and monetary donations can be made to the YCF Community Engagement Center, 2703 Tasker St., in Greys Ferry. For more information, visit the Young Chances Facebook page.

Bethesda Project

Bethesda Project is a homeless services nonprofit. “We provide emergency shelter, permanent housing in varying degrees of supportive services to approximately 2,000 single adults who are experiencing homelessness, said CEO Tina Pagotto. Pagotto said one of the best ways people can give is to make a financial donation in somebody else’s name. “Bethesda Project has greeting cards that says a gift has been made in your honor, said Pagotto. “It’s a really nice, tangible thing to do. You feel good giving it. You’ll also get a note from us saying that this gift has been made and this is how it’s helping. Another great way to donate financially is to use Amazon Smile. “If you go to smile.amazon.com, you can enter a nonprofit, and every time you order, Amazon gives a percentage of your purchase back to the nonprofit of your choice, said Pagotti. If you’re looking to donate supplies instead of money, don’t worry. Bethesda Project takes those too. “We are always in need of supplies, said Pagotti. “The things that are most in high demand are toiletries, men’s underwear, men’s socks. However, according to Pagotti, it’s most helpful to host a drive at your job, church or any other centralized location. “See if you could put a bin at your work or civic association, host a towel drive or a toiletry drive, and collect them and donate them to our organization, said Pagotti. “We are also always in need of gift cards to places like Wawa, Walgreens, Target, Dunkin’ Donuts – any of those things. This is because each person in Bethesda Project’s shelters gets a personalized gift during every holiday season, and many of the residents ask for gift cards. The nearest Bethesda Project location that you can take supplies and donations to is located at 1630 South St. For more information, visit bethesdaproject.org.

Other ways to give

On Thursday, Dec. 14, the Shamrock Pub, located at the corner of 2nd and Reed streets, is hosting its 15th annual toy drive. Daily News sports writers Ed Barkowitz and Mike Kern will be on hand to guest bartend, and all of their tips will go toward purchasing toys for neighborhood children in need. If you bring a toy or make a donation on your way into the bar, your first drink is free. For more information, visit the Whitman Council Facebook page.

Philabundance has many ways of giving back by fighting hunger. In fact, Philabundance and its member agencies distributed 24 million pounds of food last year, according to its website. The organization accepts financial donations as well as food donations of any kind – not just non-perishable foods. You can even schedule a time for members to pick up your food for you. There’s no need to drop it off. The organization is headquartered at 3616 S. Galloway St. For more information, visit philabundance.org.

An updated timeline for the Philly Live! Casino and Hotel slated for 900 Packer Ave. puts the project breaking ground in 2018 with a planned opening in 2020.

Casino update Stadium Casino, LLC has released an updated property fact sheet that includes two key dates. Construction for the The Philly Live! Casino and Hotel, 900 Packer Ave., will commence in 2018, and open in 2020. The project is expected to create nearly 3,000 direct and indirect construction jobs, and approximately 2,000 permanent new jobs for local and regional residents. Job opportunities will be available in every field, including hotel operations, finance, marketing, human resources, information technologies, food and beverage, facilities, security and surveillance, and casino operations. Hiring preference will be given to local residents first, then surrounding communities. The project, which is a partnership between The Cordish Companies and Greenwood Gaming, was selected in November 2014 to develop a world-class resort hotel and casino complex for the City of Philadelphia, after a rigorous and competitive selection process by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s Gaming Control Board. Philly Live! will be more than1.5-million square feet, and feature a world-class hotel, gaming, dining and entertainment destination. The casino floor will include 2,200 slots and electronic table games and more than 150 live action table games, including poker. They’re home!:

Local animal-rescue nonprofit Mums and Mutts continues to do its part to find forever homes for pets around South Philadelphia

By Bill Gelman

SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

hen Megan McFarland adopted her first rescue dog in 2010, it marked the beginning of a special bond. Not just with the pet she brought home, but many, many more that were in need of a home. “Growing up, I always had a love and soft spot for animals. Once I adopted Lexie with my now husband, Jason and I began to foster to help out more dogs,” McFarland, a former South Philly Review Difference Maker, said. “Since we began fostering, we have fostered over 50 dogs of all breeds, ages and sizes. We have also adopted two of our foster dogs, Frankie and Noelle. “While Noelle was up for adoption, she was recovering from cancer and we fell so in love, we knew she was already home.” Many of these pets find new homes through the Mums and Mutts nonprofit McFarland started seven years ago to help shelters and rescues. It includes holding an annual Mums and Mutts Fall Festival at Burke Playground, Second and Jackson streets. Besides doing fundraising and events, it provides support to more than 13 animal and welfare organizations in and around Philly. Since the fall of 2016, many of the pets in need of a home have appeared in SPR as part of the weekly Adopt This Pet feature. McFarland said the response from readers has been tremendous. “Each week we saw applications come in shortly after the Review was distributed. The community that reads the Review has been so incredible and ALL of the pets we have featured are now in loving homes because of it,” McFarland said. “It’s really so exceptional to have a community paper who cares so much, and without the help of the Review these pets may still be in shelters or foster care.” Other pets appear on PHL17 Morning News every Friday morning. Each of the dogs has his or her own

The brief description accompanies a photo of the dog in need of a home. McFarland said her most memorable story was of Bonnie Belle, who was with Tree Tops animal rescue for months, overlooked time and time again. “She was a happy sweet girl, but continuously had no interested adopters,” McFarland said. “Mums and Mutts put her [in the Review] as the pet of the week, and boom, within one day she had an application from an amaz-

ing couple, the Pescatores, who reside in South Philly! She is so happy in her forever home and has the best family!” Miracle (“Be Miracle’s miracle”) appeared in the Nov. 29 issue of the South Philly Review. The abandoned puppy was found in an alley, but once her picture appeared in the paper, McFarland said the applications came pouring in to adopt Miracle. “People were so touched by her story, they wanted to help,” McFarland said. “This is what makes our community so great!”

Puyero Venezuelan Flavor adds holiday favorites By Bill Gelman SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

F

or those who enjoy trying seasonal holiday dishes from around the world, make sure to include Puyero Venezuelan Flavor, 524 S. 4th St., on the list, as owners Gil and Simon Arends and Gil’s wife, Manuela Villasmil, introduced several new traditional Christmas dishes earlier this month. “We are trying to share as much of the Venezuelan Christmas spirit as we can at Puyero,â€? Gil Arends said. “We’ve changed our dining room playlist, but most importantly, we are adding hallacas to our menu.â€? Hallacas, which are very similar to a tamale, are only prepared during the Christmas season. Each one is made from corn dough and stuffed with a stew made from the meat of choice. The fat from the stew is also used to add extra flavor to the corn dough. It is then wrapped in plantain leaves, tied with strings, and boiled. Pan de jamĂłn, or Venezuelan Christmas bread, and Andres-style hot chocolate, are other holiday additions. For more details, including pricing, visit puyeroflavor.com, or call, 267-928-4584. ‌ The Mummers Museum, 1100 S. 2nd St., is holding its sixth annual Soup Day contest on Sunday (Dec. 17) starting at noon. Tickets are $5 for adults and $2.50 for children. For more information, visit facebook.com/events/1959901994227002. ‌ The South Philadelphia Tap Room, 1509 Mifflin St., is ringing in the holidays with St. Benjamin Brewing, Kurant Ciders and Levante Brewing on Tuesday (Dec. 19). There will be rare and seasonal drafts from each of the breweries, a holiday raw bar and winter cocktails. A portion of each draft sale will

be donated to Unity in the Community. There will be half-price drafts and appetizers from 4 to 6 p.m. The establishment will remain open until 2 a.m. For more information, visit southphiladelphiataproom.com. ... The Hungry Pigeon, 743 S. 4th St., is gearing up for a special Christmas Eve dinner on Dec. 24 from 5 to 10 p.m. The special pre-fixe menu is $45 per person and includes classic shrimp cocktail, camembert tart with pears, butternut squash bisque, a choice of roast beef or vegetable lasagna and black forest cake for dessert. To make a reservation, call 215-2782736. ‌ For those who don’t feel like making Christmas dinner, the quick solution may be a phone call away. Ela, 627 S. 3rd St., is offering customers a to-go option that will feed five to seven people. The package will include a choice of honey ginger glazed ham or bone-in rib-eye, with shaved green kale salad, rustic garlic crushed potatoes, sweet chili glazed carrots, baked cauliflower, aged cheddar and truffle mac ‘n’ cheese along with honeycrisp apple cobbler and vanilla chantilly. All orders must be placed by Wednesday (Dec. 20) and picked up on Dec. 23. Call 267687-8512. ... Barcelona Wine Bar, 1709 E. Passyunk Ave., is now offering brunch on Saturday and Sunday starting at 11 a.m. Some of the brunch tapas items include pancakes with caramelized apples, vegetable frittata, hanger steak and egg, torrijas (Spanish french toast) and Serrano ham benedict. For a more detailed menu, visit barcelonawinebar.com/location/philadelphia. ‌ A couple members of the Philadelphia Flyers alumni will be hanging out at the Broad Street Bullies Pub, 1100 Pattison Ave., on Monday night ( Dec. 18) prior to the home game against the Los Angeles Kings. Besides saying hello to Bob Kelly and Bernie Parent, fans have the option of enjoying a bite before the game.

Army holds off Malcolm Perry, Beats Navy in a thriller The Black Knights left Lincoln Financial Field with their first Commander-in-Chief ’s trophy since 1996 By Al Thompson SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

T

he service academies of Army and Navy were not able to put on their spectacular pregame daredevil parachuting exhibitions and flyovers because of the snowstorm that blanketed the skies over the Philadelphia area Saturday. But none of the 68,625 fans who packed Lincoln Financial Field felt let down after watching the memorable performances put on during the 118th Army-Navy football game, won by the Black Knights, 14-13, on a fourth-quarter drive orchestrated by their team captain and quarterback Ahmad Bradshaw. The entire game was played under nonstop snowfall making the conditions nearly impossible. The field was covered with the white stuff to point where most of the field markings could not be seen. But the action on the field was as intense as any Army-Navy game ever played. The game wasn’t decided until Navy kicker Bennett Moehring’s 48-yard field goal attempt drifted just left of the goal post as time expired. It was the second consecutive win for Army (9-3) who had lost to the Midshipmen 14 consecutive times until breaking the streak with last season’s win in Baltimore. It was also the first Commander-inChief’s Trophy won by Army since 1996. “It’s pretty indescribable to be honest with you,” starting left guard Joshua Boylan said on the field after the game. “It’s the culmination of four years of work. I couldn’t be prouder of my teammates. The senior class, we started with this program wanting to make a change. I think we solidified that with this win.” Army scored on its opening drive when the Black Knights drove 68 yards on seven plays, ending with a three-yard touchdown run by fullback Darnell Woolfolk. Navy answered with a 13-play, 64-yard drive that ended with a 28-yard field goal by Moehring. The Midshipmen made it 10-7 on their first drive of the second quarter when sophomore quarterback/running back Malcolm Perry bolted 68 yards for a touchdown. Perry started the game for senior Zach Abey.

MICHAEL CORSEY/Michael Corsey Photography

Navy quarterback Malcolm Perry races to the end zone for a second quarter touchdown against Army. The sophomore finished with 250 yards on 30 carries and one touchdown. Navy scored its final points of the day on a 24-yard field goal to open the third quarter. On the nine-play drive, Perry exploded out of the backfield at the Navy 43yard line and was headed to what appeared to be a sure touchdown when 6-foot-3, 265-pound defensive end and team captain John Voit somehow chased down Perry in the snow and made a diving, game-changing play, getting a hand on Perry’s foot, tripping him up at the 11-yard line. The Midshipmen were unable to get past the six-yard line and were forced to kick the field goal. “That was a huge play in the game,” Army head coach Jeff Monken said at his post-game press conference. Voit had fun talking about his speed in catching the emerging Navy star from behind. “A lot of these guys think I’m pretty slow,” Voit said with a wide smile. “I had to show off my wheels … and I got him.” Voit also talked about how the Black Knights have improved their toughness in the trenches and how that is translating to two consecutive winning seasons. “All year long we’ve been preaching being warriors in the fourth quarter and winning the fourth quarter and we just did that tonight,” Voit said. “That fourth quar-

ter, we knew we had to win it and we did and came out on top.” Army’s third-quarter drive ended at the beginning of the fourth quarter with a missed 34-yard field goal by Blake Wilson. Things were not looking good for the Black Knights But Voit and his teammates on defense stepped up and forced a three-and-out by Navy. Then Bradshaw literally took matters into his own hands, rushing nine times in a 13-play drive that ended with the senior powering his way into the end zone from the one to give the Black Knights a 14-13 lead they would not give up. Bradshaw led Army with 94 yards on 21 carries and the touchdown. He threw one pass and completed it for 20 yards. Woolfolk had 57 yards on 12 carries and a touchdown. Kell Walker chipped in with 39 yards on five carries. Navy’s starting quarterback all season was Zach Abey, who, despite missing significant time this year due to injury, entered the game as one of the leading rushers in the FBS. He was replaced in the starting lineup Saturday by Perry, Navy’s star for the next two years. Perry rushed 30 times for 250 yards,

including his long touchdown run in the second quarter. Abey finished with just two carries for three yards. Perry threw one pass for two yards. Perry almost pulled off a game-winning drive 5:10 left in the fourth. The 5-9, 185-pound blur moved Navy to the Army 23-yard line with two-minutes left and a chance to win the game. But two penalties for false starts that also forced a 10-second runoff left the Midshipmen on the 31-yard line, with fourth down and just three seconds on the clock. The penalties turned a make-able field goal attempt, even in seven inches of snow, into a long shot that did not come through. “I should have made the kick,” Moehring said after the game. “I was pretty zoned in and told myself to make contact. I thought I did. The ball came off of my foot pretty clean. I thought I had a chance, and unfortunately it went the wrong way this time.” Voit was asked if Perry was thinking too much on the last drive causing the two Navy penalties. “I don’t know,” Voit said. “I was looking at the (stats) sheet, he had 250 yards. He had a really good game … maybe. I know we were throwing some new stuff at him in the fourth quarter and it worked.”

Perry said he wasn’t celebrating after his big day. “My performance isn’t satisfying unless we win,” said Perry, who has four rushing touchdowns this season of 65 or more yards. “We put ourselves in a position to possibly win the game and we didn’t. We made too many mistakes.” Ken Niumatalolo’s record as Navy head coach in 10 seasons is 83-48. He has been on the Navy sideline as either an assistant or head coach for 19 of the last 22 years. Over those 19 seasons, Navy has compiled a 150-98 record. His teams have dominated the ArmyNavy series over that time. He has never lost to Army two consecutive years. So this is uncharted waters for Niumatalolo, not only for himself but his players. “This is a disappointing loss,” Niumatalolo said at his post-game press conference. “It was a hard-fought game. Two teams played really hard out there. We came up a couple feet short. This is a great rivalry, another classic game. Unfortunately for us, we were on the short end of the stick. I feel for our seniors and the guys in the locker room right now. They’ll get over this. They’re great young men and they’ll continue to persevere.” Navy (6-6) will next play in the Military Bowl against Virginia on Dec. 28 in Annapolis, Md. Boylan said the image of Army football has changed for the better over the last two seasons but he would not agree this group has left a legacy, at least not now. “It’s not done yet,” Boylan said. “We have one more game to go in Fort Worth Texas (Armed Forces Bowl vs. San Diego State on Dec. 23) but this was definitely a huge building block for us to pave the path for the younger guys.” Boylan said these past two seasons have put Army football back on the map. “For a lot of years you heard, ‘you can’t win at Army,’” Boylan said. “It’s not possible, there’s just too many obstacles, from summer training on, but we wanted to come out here and say ‘forget excuses,’ it’s not about excuses. It’s about doing our job. We showed the discipline and toughness to get the job done and that’s what we wanted to do.”

Local standouts shine on college basketball stage Neumann-Goretti alumna making presence felt in and out of the paint By Bill Gelman SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

S

s. Neumann-Goretti High School girls basketball has no trouble drawing the attention of college basketball recruiters. It comes with the territory of winning three-straight Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association titles. The added bonus to this success story is the fact that many of the athletes who contributed to the championship run are now playing college basketball across the country. Here is a look at how the former Saints are performing on the next level. Tanesha Sutton is a starting guard for the University of Maine Bears, and is averaging a team best 7.6 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game while her 11.4 points per game ranks third best. In a recent win over Maine Maritime Academy, she tallied 13 points, six rebounds and six assists. Olamide Aborowa, a junior forward, is averaging 13 minutes, 5.4 points and 3.3 rebounds per game for her 7-1 University of Texas squad. As of last week, her Longhorns were ranked No. 2 in the Associated Press poll behind the University of Connecticut and fourth in the USA Today Coaches Poll. Alisha Kebbe, a sophomore guard, made an immediate impact last season at St. John’s University as she earned a spot on the Big East All-Freshman Team. She is averaging 23.2 minutes, 5.3 points and 4.8 rebounds per game for the 5-2 Red Storm. Ashley Jones, coming off a First Team All-Catholic season at NeumannGoretti, is in the national spotlight as her 7-0 University of West Virginia Mountaineers were ranked No. 11 in the Dec. 5 USA Today Sports Coaches Poll. The guard has seen action in all seven contests, averaging 18.1 minutes. Sianni Martin, a junior guard, will not see any action this season after transferring from Towson University to the University of Central Florida. Last season, she started all 28 games for the

Her collegiate career also included three CAA Rookie of the Week honors. Moving over to the Atlantic Coast Conference, Felicia Aiyeotan, who spent part of her high school career at Neumann-Goretti, has started six of 10 games as a sophomore center for the University of Virginia Cavaliers, and is averaging 6.3 points and 7.1 rebounds per game. However, the number that really pops out is the 30 blocks she has tallied through 10 games, as she is ranked among the top 15 players nationally. Ciani Cryor, a redshirt sophomore guard for the Rutgers University women’s basketball team, has seen action in 10 games, including one start, and is averaging 6.5 points per game, which is tied for

third best on the team. She is also contributing 2.2 rebounds per contest. Minika Glenn is settling in comfortably as a freshman guard/forward on the Neumann University basketball team. Last month, she picked up a Colonial States Athletic Conference Player of the Week honor and MVP of the Neumann Tip-Off Tournament. She averaged 16 points and 8.3 rebounds through the first three games of the season. Glenn started seven of the first eight games. Guard Chyna Nixon is now playing Division-I basketball for the University of Mississippi where she is averaging 3.6 points and 2.6 rebounds per game as a freshman. Jada Russell, a sophomore guard, is averaging 12.5 minutes per game for the 1-5 Longwood University Lancers.

Eagles will rally around Foles, Pederson says Team remains on course for the Super Bowl despite loss of Carson Wentz, according to coach By Al Thompson SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

E

agles fans were dealt a gut punch late Sunday afternoon against the Los Angeles Rams when MVP candidate and quarterback Carson Wentz left for the locker room in the third quarter after injuring his left knee at some point during a drive that ended with him throwing a two-yard touchdown pass to Alshon Jeffery. The score put the Eagles on top 31-28 in what had been a brutal back-and-forth affair. The Rams would go back up 35-31 on the ensuing drive, but Wentz did not return to answer. Instead, backup Nick Foles relieved Wentz and engineered his seventh career game-winning drive and sixth career fourth-quarter comeback in what turned out to be a thrilling 43-35 win over the Rams. Foles, who orchestrated two scoring drives (both Jake Elliot field goals), finished the game 6-of-10 for 42 yards, and the Eagles clinched the NFC East for the first time since 2013, ironically when Foles led the Birds to the division title. But the celebration by the tens of thousands Eagles fans who made the trip the Coliseum, the players and all of Eagles Nation back in Philadelphia was tempered by the questions about the status of their quarterback’s knee. There was speculation out there it was a torn ACL but couldn’t be confirmed until Monday after Wentz had an MRI. Their worst fears were realized on Monday when head coach Doug Pederson confirmed Wentz indeed did have a tear of his left ACL and was done for the season. Wentz was putting together a season for the books, literally. The 24-year-old had just thrown four touchdown passes in the game against the Rams that gave him a league-leading 33 for the season. That total broke the franchise record for a single season, surpassing the previous mark of 32 set by Sonny Jurgensen in 1961. The Eagles have lost core players all over the roster already this year, including a future Hall of Fame offensive tackle in Jason Peters, starting running

The Eagles’ hopes and dreams of a Super Bowl title this year are now in the hands of former Pro Bowl quarterback Nick Foles, seen here throwing a pass against the Bears earlier this season. Foles led the Eagles to a 43-35 win Sunday over the L.A. Rams after starting QB Carson Wentz left the game in the third quarter with what turned out to be a season-ending knee injury. back Darren Sproles, middle linebacker Jordan Hicks and kicker Caleb Sturgis. Still the Eagles are on course to grab the No. 1 seed on the NFC playoffs. At his press conference Monday, Pederson talked about the obstacles this team has overcome to forge an 11-2 record. Can the Birds overcome losing a potential All Pro and league MVP and reach the Super Bowl? “It sure can, heck yeah,” Pederson said without hesitation. “We overcame (losing) a Pro-Bowl left tackle. We overcame our middle linebacker. We’ve overcome our running back. We’ve overcome a core special teams player this year. We’ve overcome our kicker this year. This is no different. Yeah, he is the quarterback of our football team. Each one of these guys that I mentioned

is tough to replace. But you know what? The reason we went out and got Nick Foles was for reasons like this and situations like this. I’m excited for Nick. I hate it for Carson Wentz. I hate it for the career, the season, I guess, that he’s been having. But at the same time, it’s been the next-man-up mentality, and that’s how we approach it this week.” Pederson was asked about what he can say to fans who are as disappointed as it could possibly get with news like this? People suddenly think your Super Bowl chances are gone. What do you say to them? “That’s a great question,” Pederson said. “You know what? People thought our chances were gone by the wayside when Jason Peters went down too, and when Darren Sproles goes down, and

all the guys I mentioned earlier. To the fans out there, you can’t lose faith. This has been a resilient football team all season long. If there’s ever an opportunity for me as a head football coach to rally the troops, now might be the time. We just came off a tremendous victory to win the NFC East. Guys are riding extremely high. It’s a little bitter sweet. But we got the Giants this week. We got an opportunity that if you win Sunday, you get a first-round bye. So there is still a lot to play for. That’s what’s exciting about the rest of this season. We’re still playing for that opportunity to hopefully be in that game. Nick has played a ton of football. I was here when we drafted him, and we drafted him for a reason. Then we went out and got him again this off-season for a reason. You never want it to be under these

circumstances, but at the same time, my confidence is extremely high in Nick. You saw what he did in that game last night. The big third and eight to Nelson (Agholor). These are things, people ask me, ‘Why did you throw the ball?’ Because I’ve got confidence in Nick. I’ve got confidence in the guys. That’s what I’m going to continue to do. I’m going to continue to stay aggressive. I’m going to lead this football team. It falls more on my shoulders than it does these players. That’s why they need to stay encouraged. That’s why they need to stay excited about this opportunity we have in front of us.” The Eagles do have games in front of them they can win, including the Giants (2-11) away, then the Oakland Raiders (6-7) and Dallas Cowboys (7-6) at the Linc. The Birds will likely be favored in all three games, even without Wentz. Winning two will no doubt secure home field throughout and a bye. Foles is 15-9 as a starter for the Eagles. They still have a stout offensive line (left guard Stefen Wisniewski is expected to play in New York) and can run the ball with anyone. The receiving corps is still one of the best in the NFL. The Birds defense is tops in the NFL against the run. Special teams gave up a touchdown against the Rams after a blocked punt, but overall is solid. Pederson was asked that since the Eagles are 11-2, you’ve climbed the mountain to likely a first-round bye. Does that make Foles’ task in front of him a little less daunting with what’s already accomplished and set up for him? “It’s interesting, because we’re still fighting not only for a playoff game, but also home field,” Pederson said. “So it’s still pretty important these next few games and these next three weeks for us as a team. Our mentality is like we’re just going to focus on this week and try to – we’re going to put the best game plan together and try to go win a football game up in New York this week and see what happens after that. Yeah, it’s just we’ve still got a lot in front of us and a lot to play for.” Follow Al Thompson on Twitter @ thompsoniii

EAGLES INSIDER

H

Can the Eagles still win without Wentz?

ow far can the Eagles go without quarterback Carson Wentz? The secondyear quarterback suffered a season-ending knee injury in Sunday’s win at the Los Angeles Rams, thrusting veteran Nick Foles into the spotlight and in the pilot’s chair down the stretch of what has been a wonderful Philadelphia Eagles season. Wentz, who had thrown his franchise-record 33rd touchdown pass to give the Eagles a lead in the third quarter on Sunday at the Los Angeles Coliseum, then walked off the field with a towel draped over his head. He had been hit on the knee on a scramble play three snaps before the touchdown pass, and now he was hurt. And the Eagles rallied around Foles, who completed 6-of-10 passes in the fourth quarter of the 43-35 victory that raised their record to 11-2. “The whole season has been about ‘next man up’ for us, right tackle Lane

‘The whole season has been about ‘next man up’ for us. We’re a team. You win as a team.’ – Eagles right tackle Lane Johnson

Johnson said. “We’re a team. You win as a team. But you also need strong play at the quarterback position, which is why the Eagles have been so unexpectedly good this season. Wentz has 33 touchdown passes and just seven interceptions. He’s been incredible. But so has the entire Eagles offense, and the rest of the cast of characters is going to have to pick up the slack in a big way down the stretch and in the postseason. So what if the Eagles change the offensive approach to lead with the run-

Dave

Spadaro

ning game down the stretch? Is that such a bad thing? The Eagles have a powerful ground game, with a strong offensive line and a three-man-approach in the backfield. They can grind out wins if they have to, right? Or maybe the Eagles go with matchups and say to defenses, “Cover us if you can with a varied tight end group, a deep cast at wide receiver and some running backs who are suddenly making the screen game go. They also will need to ride the defense, regardless. The Eagles gave up too many big plays in the passing game against Los Angeles, mostly due to some missed tackles and some shoddy down-the-field coverage. The Eagles

need to be better on defense, but there isn’t another offense in the NFC playoff landscape as good as Los Angeles, and if the Rams have to come through Philadelphia in the postseason, well, it’s fair to like the Eagles’ chances. Seeing Wentz walk off the field and then to digest the severity of the injury was hard to take. Sickening. It’s been so set up perfectly for the Eagles with 11 wins in 13 games. This is a complete football team that has overcome the loss of so many key players already. Well, moving forward, the Eagles

are going to have to win as a team. They’re going to have to win at X’s and O’s. They’re going to have to win with the defense and special teams. And the offense, no matter how it is designed, has to find a way to score points. There are plenty of playmakers here to do the job. But that kinda, sorta sick feeling you’ve had since Sunday? It’s understandable. The Eagles have a huge hurdle to get over here, with high expectations that remain, and the biggest piece of the puzzle is missing.
