Christmas Fable

was the night before Christmas and inside the White House, not a creature was stirring not even a mouse. Outside it was awful, the weather was sleeting. The President cared not; he was too busy tweeting. With twelve diet Cokes lined up by his side. And his favorite foods … all of it fried. Melania was nestled all snug in her bed. While visions of Michael Kors danced in her head. The entire Trump family was spending co-written by Allan Hotlen the night. Far out of Bob Mueller’s ever-threatening sight. Ivanka had dozed off with nary a care. For Jared, however, sleep was not there. How can a man even think about dozing With so many things he wasn’t disclosing? Don Jr. dreamed about hunting big game. Dishing dirt with the Russkies had been so lame. So far Eric Trump had kept out of trouble. But who knew when Mueller would burst the boy’s bubble? Sara Huckabee Sanders scowled over coffee and toast. See CARDELLA, page 12>>

South Philly abounds with colorful Christmas displays but one neighborhood has made a habit of standing out all to see. However, there is one block that does it just a little bit better than all the others. If you live in the East Passyunk Crossing neighborhood, you probably know which one it is – the 1600 block of South 13th Street. The festive display, which has been nicknamed “The Miracle on 13th Street,” was the brainchild of Perry Cavalieri and his neighbor Alex (who asked that we not use his last name), both of whom

live on the block. Cavalieri was one of five or six people on the block who started the tradition about 21 or 22 years ago. He’s lived on the block for 23 years. Alex, who has lived on the block for about 20 years, didn’t start helping with the organizing of the block until about 12 or 13 years ago. “I grew up on this street,” said Alex. “I moved See CHRISTMAS LIGHTS, page 8>>

Op-Ed Tax hikes would hurt small businesses, say letter writers

To the Editor: We, Jacob Lin and Vanessa Dinh, are your fellow South Philadelphians from District 184. As South Philadelphians, we work in small businesses and mom-and-pop shops all the time. Businesses hate taxes, which cut into their profits and can drive away customers. We noticed that in House Bill 504, our representative, William Keller, voted in favor of raising sales tax and income tax, for a temporary decrease in property tax. While we appreciate the fact that our businesses will have to pay less in property taxes, we would like him to rethink the raising of our sales tax and income tax. Small businesses are a big part of the middle class. A successful small business gives back to its local economy in a much more robust fashion than a large business. While small businesses may not seem to hire as many people as a corporation, they actually hire 50 percent of the private sector workforce. The people they hire are often either lowerclass citizens aiming to climb the socioeconomic ladder, or middle-class citizens. Allowing them to succeed is crucial for the economy. We simply don’t see why there must be an increase in our sales tax and income tax. The difference in wealth between the poor and the rich has been increasing over the years, and to further aggravate this problem just seems ridiculous. We understand that the money must come from somewhere, but why must it come from the small businesses? Why can’t we increase the sales tax of the large corporations and keep or even reduce the sales tax of the smaller businesses? This would not only allow for small businesses to thrive but they could then keep their prices competitive with larger companies. This would also drive some customers away from the big companies and bring them back to buy from the little grocery store down the street. However, while we are in disagreement about the situation with small businesses, we cannot help but notice his support for the funding of abortions from the state. It is a shame that the bill was passed in favor of ending funding of abortions, but we appreciate his efforts. We realize that much of the rest of the state is very much politically and morally opposed to abortions, but we are glad that you, our neighbors, have selected a candidate who is able to project the voices of his fellow South Philadelphians. This also ties into the issue of marijuana in which he voted in favor of creating a compassionate medical marijuana program with Senate Bill 3. While we may not be as progressive as other states in legalizing marijuana to the point of recreational use, we are glad that he helped Pennsylvania take a step in the right direction. Writer suggests more research on abortion procedure ban To the Editor: First of all, I want to commend Masterman High School seniors Jacqueline Chow and Joey Zhao for taking the time and effort to research the record of State Sen. Larry Farnese and to discuss in print their support for his positions (“High schoolers grade performance by district state senator,” Dec. 13). My only suggestion is that on the matter of Farnese’s opposition to SB 3, which would outlaw abortions after 20 weeks, except for medical emergencies, that they need to do more research into what this actually entails. The object of SB 3, which Gov. Wolf vetoed on Monday, is to ban a procedure that is universally used in abortions. It is called “Dilation and Evacuation” or D&E. These are medical terms for a procedure that does the following: The entrance to the womb is cleansed and then dilated or stretched open to gain access to the unborn child. A long forceps or grabbing instrument is inserted into the womb. Whatever body part it reaches first is torn from the body and pulled out of the womb.

The abortionist continues to grab, tear and pull out body parts until the womb is empty. Then they scrape and suction out the womb itself until nothing is left. This form of abortion is the only way you can remove the large amount of tissue that was once a developing fetus or unborn child. At 20 weeks gestation, that child is sentient and fully capable of feeling pain. Try to imagine how it would feel to be torn limb from limb starting with your feet. Calling the baby “tissue” and dressing up the pro-

cedure with medical terminology does not change the facts. The bare fact is that a living human being with full sensory ability is allowed to be killed by dismemberment. Calling this by any other terminology does not change a thing. I strongly suggest that students Chow and Zhao continue to research this and educate themselves to the reality of the procedure. The same goes for Sen. Farnese. Gloria C. Endres South Philadelphia

Seasonal sights from around South Philly photos by Mark Carosiello

CHRISTMAS LIGHTS: 1600 block of South 13th goes all out <<Continued from page 1 here when I was in seventh grade. So they started the tradition and I’ve always had a festive house during the holidays so it was just natural. It wasn’t anything I had to push myself to do.” Alex said he and Cavalieri start putting up the lights after Halloween. They always have the lights com-

pleted by the Saturday after Thanksgiving, which is when the neighbors host the block’s lighting party. “We had carnival games for the kids, and had four food trucks sell out” at this year’s lighting party, said Cavalieri. The decorations feature a wide variety of wreaths, lights and even characters. Cavalieri, Alex and some of the other neighbors dress up in costumes

at the lighting party and sometimes on the weekends leading up to Christmas. Santa Claus, the Grinch and the Gingerbread Man are a few of the characters residents and tourists see. Speaking of tourists, there’s a lot of them. “It’s amazing the people that come up here from different areas and different cities,” said Cavalieri. “Chicago, Boston. People came from Virginia to

see the lighting.” Every weekend, Alex said, trolleys will drop people off to look at the lights on their block. Their block was even featured during a scene in “Baby Mama,” a 2008 rom-com featuring Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. The guys said the idea was never meant to become the phenomenon it

became. “The world just needs a little bit of inspiration,” Alex said. “That’s all we want to do. And if you look at our lights and it gives you a nice little warm feeling, we’ve done our job.” For more information about the holiday lights on the 1600 block of South 13th Street, check out the Miracle on 13th Street Facebook page.

Sixers’ Simmons surprises as secret Santa Two area families made a trip to Target that included some unexpected holiday joy from the rookie By Bill Gelman SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

O

n the basketball court, there is no doubt Philadelphia 76ers starting point guard Ben Simmons is a serious contender for the NBA’s Rookie of the Year Award. But he is making headlines off the court, too, by helping families in need during this holiday season. Little did the invited families, including two from South Philly, know that this Dec. 14 trip to Target on City Line Avenue was going to include being taken on a $1,000 shopping spree by an NBA player. Anton Moore, a former South Philly Review Difference Maker, provided the 76ers with names of families that were submitted to his Unity in the Community nonprofit that is dedicated to changing the lives of others in the South Philadelphia area. The organization received more than 30 nominations for its Operation Holiday Help initiative – now in its eighth year – that provides less fortunate families from various sections of the city generous donations of toys and gifts. The selected individuals will be receiving a surprise delivery on Christmas Eve. Last Thursday’s event, which was coordinated by the Sixers, was like finding a surprise gift under the Christmas tree. The nominators told the selected individuals they were going to a meeting. Once Simmons magically appeared to take the families shopping, it was time to start filling those big red carts. “They were very excited,” Moore said. It brought joy to the faces of families who are experiencing some tough times. Tymisha Johnson, who resides in Point Breeze with her two children, recently lost her mother to illness and a brother to gun violence. Michelle D’Auria, who also resides in South Philly, has a toddler and is experiencing some tough financial times. Simmons, with his 6-foot-10 frame, is accustomed to dishing out assists, averaging 7.9 per game. On this night, he helped the little ones get the desired items off the shelves and into the carts. However, he had nothing to do with getting Sixers mascot Franklin inside of the shopping cart.

The Sixers and rookie guard Ben Simmons surprised some local families by donating $1,000 shopping sprees at Target on City Line Avenue.

The holiday giving is one of many ways in which Unity in the Community continues to lend a helping hand around South Philly and beyond. Former Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Marcus Smith helped with getting a local student to the prom. Others have received support with finding a job. Every summer, the organization also hosts a Peace Week celebration that includes a massive block party. For Moore, last week’s trip to Target provided a feel-good moment as helping others during the holiday season is something he would think about during his childhood. “It means a lot to me,” he said. “I used to dream about this stuff when I was younger. olby is a 3-year-old male pit bull/cow (OK, there is probably no cow, but look at his cute cow markings). He has an adorably big head and a soft pink muzzle. This handsome fellow was found as a stray. Colby seems to enjoy other dogs and people of all sizes. Colby also knows how to sit on command, and is working on learning other tricks. He is an excellent pet, and will make someone so happy. Picture snuggling with this guy on those cold winter nights! To adopt Colby, visit streettails.org. CARDELLA: On Obstructin’, on Colludin’, on Lyin’ and Stealin’ <<Continued from page 1 And blamed her bad mood on the Washington Post. And that Times reporter was so darned uncouth. Accusing her of always shading the truth. When out in the Rose Garden there arose such a clatter, Trump dropped his McMuffin. What on earth is the matter? As he ran to the window, thinking who could it be? He kicked over a h-u-u-uge bucket of KFC. Well no one was there, so he looked in the crapper. And what did he see? He saw Mr. Jake Tapper. The President ranted and raged in his den. He swore and he screamed, “God, I hate CNN. “Fake news! “Fake news Everyone heard Trump shout. The old building trembled ev’ry time he cried out. “You liberals have no respect for our borders. And stop trashing all my executive orders! You say that my tax cut is just for the rich. Rammed through by a chinless McConnell named Mitch. You say I met Putin for the purpose of collusion. That my visions of grandeur are just a delusion. You don’t give me credit for achieving my goal. Like single-handedly breathing new life into coal. Restored “Merry Christmas to its hallowed old place. Gave those white supremacists a strong voice on race. To for-profit firms, I gave government land. And gave public schools the back of my hand. Suddenly, from the distance, Trump heard a boomer. Could it be Pelosi and that wimp, Chucky Schumer? But no, it turned out, Trump had nothing to fear. The sound came from Santa and all his reindeer. The President was calm. And he seemed real aloof. “Why the hell are those reindeer up there on my roof? As he turned and he carefully put his Twinkies down, Through the chimney, came Santa with a rumbling sound. He was dressed in pin stripes and he wore a red tie. Could it be that St. Nick’s a Republican guy? On the old man’s lapel was a small shiny flag. In his weathered hands, he carried a bag. Into the opened sack, Donald Trump peeks. There are Hillary’s emails straight from Wikileaks! Oh goody, they’ll finally get off my back. Trump thought as he watched Santa open the sack.

We’ll lock her up. Put her tail behind bars. Put her in a spaceship and send her to Mars. Force liberals to admit I’m the greatest of all. My hands are so big. My stature quite tall. All my enemies are just sorehead losers. The same goes for all of my female accusers. The President smiles and poetically waxes. “Soon, no one will care about seeing my taxes. And Americans will realize I’m not so dim. Just watch me destroy little rocket man, Kim. My critics will see that I’m smart and I’m shrewd. My ego’s in check and I’d never be lewd. Wasn’t me on that bus with that Billy Bush. Do I seem like a man who would grab any tush? The leaders in Europe will all sing my praises. So will corporate heads when they get their huge raises. In the home of each liberal, let there be a pox. Let every TV be forever on FOX. Santa, I’ll soon be a God here on earth. ‘Cause they’ll soon find in Kenya Obama’s record of birth. On golf ranges everywhere, folks will yell “fore! And you’ll soon see my face up there on Mount Rushmore. At Trump hotels, room rates will keep climbing higher. And no one will say, “Donald Trump is a liar. Mexico’s Prez? Britain’s Theresa May? Are gonna be left soon with nothing to say. All through the Capitol building you’ll hear the cryin’ Comin’ from the office of House Speaker, Paul Ryan. They’ll pass my tax cut and they’ll pass healthcare too. Place Michael Moore on display at the zoo. Trump snapped to his senses and looked up at Santa. Who handed the President a bottle of Mylanta. “You’ll need this, I fear, he said, matter-of-factly. These papers are not what you’re thinkin’ exactly. Trump’s stomach did rumble. His face showed alarm. Could the spirit of Christmas morning be bringing him harm? Santa suddenly had a big change of demeanor. As he handed the President a bag full of subpoenas. “Merry Christmas, he called to the guests in the foyer. Tell the President, he’d better get a good lawyer. Somewhere in the land, far away from this drama, A man is smiling. His name is Obama.

M

arlo and Jason Dilks, the owners SliCE, 1180 S. 10th St., have rolled out their special holiday menu featuring the pizza of the seven fishes. This seasonal pizza is inspired by their families’ Christmas Eve traditions and the popular South Philadelphia seven fish dinner. It will be available until Christmas Eve (Dec. 24). Small pie is $19 while the large is $26. The seafood Caesar ($15), with romaine, shaved parmigiano-reggiano, house-made Caesar dressing, sauteed shrimp and crabmeat and house-made croutons with Sarcone’s Bakery bread, is another seasonal special. The Greek pizza ($17), with San Mariano tomato sauce, cool salad of romaine, red onion, feta and olives, is the gluten-free piece of the month that has returned by popular demand. The specials are available through Jan. 2, and

include New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. Visit slicepa.com. Switching gears to New Year’s Eve, there is still time to make plans for a night out on the town. Toll Man Joe’s, 26 E. South Philly’s Steven Grosso releases his newest novel ‘Those Who Seek’ is the third installment in the neighborhood native’s mystery novel series By Tom Beck SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

L

ocal author Steven Grosso, who was born and raised in South Philadelphia, released Those Who Seek this past October, which is the third book in his mystery/detective novel series. The book comes on the heels of The Divine, the second book in the series, which was released in 2014. The first book in the series, released in 2013, is titled The Highway. The whole series “features two Philadelphia police detectives, and it’s set throughout Philadelphia, said Grosso. “The first one is primarily in Old City, the second one is in Rittenhouse, and this one takes place in South Philadelphia. The book’s premise involves two detectives,

Benny Steel and Marisa Tulli, who left the Philadelphia Police Department and opened their own private investigation firm in South Philadelphia, which is where the book is based. “I still live in South Philadelphia, so I know the locale,â€? said Grosso, who grew up at 10th and Wolf streets. “I know how the people talk, I know how they think, and I grew up there and almost all the scenes are set in South Philadelphia in real areas – not necessarily real locations but real areas within South Philadelphia ‌ [Readers] will be able to feel the characters are real, genuine and authentic and so is the setting.â€? The two main characters, Steel and Tulli, met in the first novel, fell in love, and are in a relationship throughout the series. They work and live together in South Philly. Tulli is from South Philly, and she and her family are a part of this book. “The internal issues my main detective struggles with are self-doubt, pessimism and, at times, depression,â€? said Grosso. Grosso initially started writing short mystery stories when he was a kid. In his teens, he stopped reading and writing as much, but returned to it in his 20s. “In my early 20s, maybe a few years before I wrote my first novel, I started getting into reading a lot,â€? he said. “I was reading different novels by Michael Connolly, Dennis Lehane, John Grisham, and as I was reading more and more, I said to myself ‘I love this. I can do this.’ That’s when I started.â€? The first book to get him into reading was Angela’s Ashes by Frank McCourt. “After that, I read everything I could get my hands on until I discovered a love for mystery novels.â€? There’s one important thing Grosso wants readers to know about all his books, and that’s how he tries to end all of his novels with a sense of hope. “In the end I always try to leave the readers with hope,â€? Grosso said. “For all the tragedies that the detectives see, for all the experiences that they go through as detectives to see the dark side of humanity, they always grow in the end, and there’s always a hopefulness at the end of each book. They grow throughout the book. So you’ll see their evolution as human beings, not just detectives.â€? For more information about Grosso, visit his website at stevengrosso.com. Wildcats, Tigers and Hurricanes, oh my! Several former Neumann-Goretti basketball players are showing they’ve got college game By Bill Gelman SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

T

he NCAA Tournament is still months away, but come Selection Sunday, several athletes with South Philly ties will receive word that they’re going dancing. We’re talking as members of powerhouse programs like Kentucky, Villanova and Miami. Since there is a long way to go before teams hit the road to the Final Four, here is an early look at how some former Ss. NeumannGoretti High School, 1736 S. 10th St., players are faring on the Division-I level. Look at the AP and USA Today Coaches polls, and they both have a clear cut No. 1 – the 11-0 Villanova Wildcats. Dhamir Cosby-Rountree, a 6-foot-9 forward, is averaging 12.2 minutes and 2.8 rebounds per game. The perfect mark includes a 87-67 victory over Philadelphia Big 5 rival Temple University. Up next is Friday night’s game at Hofstra University followed by a Dec. 27 game at DePaul University, which will be televised on the CBS Sports Network. Former classmate Quade Green, a 6-foot guard, has started eight out of the first 10 games for the 9-1 Kentucky Wildcats, who were ranked No. 5 in last week’s USA Today Coaches Poll. He is averaging 11 points, 3.5 assists and 2.4 rebounds per game. His career-best performance to date came in last month’s 78-61 victory over East Tennessee State where Green finished with a team high 21 points He spoke about his successful night following the game. “I was just reading how they were playing me, you know shoot when I’m open and then play hard, get in the lane, swing it, get everybody involved. It’s as simple as that,” Green said during the press conference. Up next for Kentucky is a Saturday trip to New Orleans to play UCLA in the CBS Sports Classic (4 p.m. on CBS) followed by a Dec. 29 game at the University of Louisville (1 p.m. on CBS). In the Atlantic Coast Conference, Ja’Quan Newton, a 6-foot-3 guard, and his Miami Hurricanes, who are ranked No. 6 in the AP Top 25, are

Newton has started all eight games, and is averaging 28.8 minutes and 10.1 points per game. He tallied nine points and six rebounds in last week’s 69-54 victory over Boston University. The Canes are heading to Hawaii to play in the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Classic to play host Hawaii on Friday and either Davidson on New

Mexico State on Saturday. The tournament, which can be seen on ESPN2 or ESPNU, will wrap up on Christmas Day. Closer to home, Lamarr Kimble, a 6-foot junior guard, is sidelined for the season after having surgery to repair the fifth metatarsal in his left foot. It’s the same foot injury that cut his sophomore season short. His only action came in the season opener against Toledo, which the Hawks lost, 96-86. He chipped in 10 points before having to leave the game. Kimble, who averaged a team high 15.5 points per game as a sophomore, will continue to serve as team captain for the second-straight season. Troy Harper, a 6-foot-1 junior guard, is suiting up for the Drexel Dragons after having to sit out last season following his transfer from Campbell University. Through five games, all of which he started, Harper is averaging 10.6 points per game, which ranks fourth best on the team. The 5-5 Dragons are back in action tomorrow night at Loyola University. Staying in the Colonial Athletic Association, Towson University guard Zane Martin, a sophomore guard, was named the New Day USA StudentAthlete of the Week earlier this month after averaging 20 points in wins over Morgan State, 82-78 in overtime, and the University of Maryland Baltimore County, 78-65. Against Morgan State, Martin connected on the game-tying three-pointer with 8.1 seconds remaining in regulation. He is leading the 10-1 Tigers with 17. 9 points per game. Towson travels to Oakland University tonight followed by Friday night’s game at the University of Pittsburgh. Photo provided by UK Athletics

At left, Quade Green’s rookie season at the University of Kentucky has included a 21-point performance against East Tennessee State.

Foles shows he can lead Eagles in first sans-Wentz start Ex-starter navigates team to 34-29 win over the Giants to clinch first-round playoff bye By Al Thompson SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

T

here were plenty of questions on whether current Eagles quarterback Nick Foles could play like the Nick Foles who led the Eagles to the NFC East title in 2013, and a 6-2 record in 2014 before he was injured. Those questions were answered with a capital YES Sunday afternoon at MetLife Stadium when the 28-yearold led the Eagles to a crucial 34-29 win over the Giants, clinching a firstround bye and a guaranteed home game for the first time since a Donovan McNabb-led Eagles team accomplished that feat in 2004, the last time the Birds played in a Super Bowl. “It’s obviously something great,” Foles said about getting a bye week. “I was fortunate enough to be a part of it last year in Kansas City, but I mean we still have a lot of work to do this season. We can’t focus on that. I think the big thing is you let your body recover. It’s a long season and guys who are nicked up, it can help with their injuries, but we have to finish these games out strong and keep improving and for me, keep getting more reps with all of these guys.” Foles went 24 for 38 for 237 yards and four touchdowns. He was not intercepted and was sacked just once. Foles went retro with his quarterback rating, checking in with a grade of 115.8. The Giants took a 6-0 lead on a drive orchestrated by Eli Manning that went 75 yards on 13 plays and finished with Orleans Darkwa going in from the oneyard line. The extra point was blocked by Derek Barnett. The Eagles answered with their own seven-play drive that ended with Foles hitting Alshon Jeffery from the three. On one of his throws on that first drive, Foles juked Giants sack monster Jason Pierre-Paul and fired the ball downfield, drawing a 32-yard pass interference call at the five-yard line. Several people in the press box remarked the move looked “Wentz-like” referring to league MVP candidate Carson Wentz. The Eagles star quarterback tore his ACL last week against the Los

Nick Foles led the Eagles to a 34-29 win Sunday over the New York Giants in the quarterback’s first start in replacement of Carson Wentz who was sidelined the week before with a season-ending knee injury. Angeles Rams and is lost for the season. So where did that move come from? Foles had some fun giving Wentz some credit for him learning the technique. “I watch Carson a lot,” Foles said. “I channeled my inner Carson Wentz right there and just made a play. Just tried to get him to move and step up and if the defender doesn’t hold Torrey (Smith) and hold his arms down, it’s probably a touchdown, but Torrey did a great job fighting through and be able to get the call and get this thing rolling.” Big Blue jumped out to a 20-7 lead on touchdown passes from Manning to Tavarres King (13 yards) and Sterling Shepard (67 yards). But the Birds roared back to take a 21-20 lead with 2:20 left in the half on touchdown passes from Foles to Zach Ertz (10 yards) and Trey Burton (13 yards). The Giants led at the half 23-21 on an Aldrick Rosas 28-yard field goal

with 27 seconds left in the second quarter. The Burton touchdown was set up by a blocked punt by Kamu GrugierHill that placed the ball at the Giants 18-yard line. The Eagles scored the first 10 points of the second half on a 28-yard Jake Elliott field goal and a 10-yard strike to Nelson Agholor who literally ripped the ball out of the hands of cornerback Darryl Morris in the end zone. The Giants got back in the game with some help from the visitors. Big Blue failed to move the ball on the ensuing drive but while in punt formation, Eagles linebacker Najee Goode committed a neutral zone infraction giving the Giants a first down. Like all great quarterbacks, Manning took advantage of the mistake, hitting King for a 57yard touchdown pass. The two-point conversion failed but the Giants got to within two points. The Birds added a 20-yard field goal

by Elliott. The Giants tried to rally the last five minutes of the game with a 15-play drive that made it to the Eagles six-yard line, but the Eagles defense, which got picked apart all afternoon by Manning (434 yards passing), was able to stop the drive when Malcolm Jenkins defended a pass in the back of the end zone intended for Giants tight end Evan Ingram. Center Jason Kelce complimented the entire coaching staff for guiding the entire team through a tough season with all the injuries. “Obviously, that’s huge,” Kelce said at his locker after the Giants game. “It’s very rare that teams can succeed when backups go in the game, especially in crucial positions. You lose RB Darren Sproles, LT Jason Peters, QB Carson Wentz on offense alone, not even to talk about the defense, but those guys are not only great players, but they are leaders and guys that teams and play-

ers would view as irreplaceable. The coaches have done a great job all year of making sure that everybody is ready to play, making sure that whatever the situation may be, whoever gets in there has to get the job done. It’s a testament, too, to the front office for getting guys here in backup roles that are more than capable of going into games.” The Eagles offense no doubt performed well, but what really bailed out the defense on this day were the three blocks special teams came up with. The PAT block by Barnett and the punt block by Grugier-Hill were huge, but Jenkins stole the show when he blocked a 48-yard field goal try by Rasas early in the fourth quarter that would have given Big Blue the lead back. That’s 11 points Dave Fipp’s unit produced in a five-point win that may end up being the victory that seals the No. 1 seed for the NFC playoffs. And it made up for special teams giving up a blocked punt against the Rams last week that was run in for a touchdown. “We rush every kick like...we’re going to come free,” Jenkins said at his locker after the game. “I think that’s what makes our rush so devastating. We don’t take plays off.” Head coach Doug Pederson complimented his assistant coach and the unit. “Well, Fipp studies the protections and throws a couple different wrinkles in there,” Pederson said. “Barnett has blocked a couple already this season. He got one, Malcolm got one and then just the rush on the punt was a thing of beauty. It was executed well, the scheme. Just things to change it up. Like I said, Fipp does a good job of understanding protection and designing some rushes to do that.” Jenkins more than echoed the special teams sentiment. “That’s what won the game,” Jenkins said referring to the three blocked kicks. “When you have the season we’re having it’s going to take staying healthy, it’s going to take getting better every week, it’s going to take a little luck. Today was a little bit of that luck.”

Fans have helped make this season a special one

y now, you’ve probably figured out that there is something magical about the season the Philadelphia Eagles are having. They have jumped from a 7-9 team in 2016 to go 12-2 with two games remaining in the 2017 regular season, best in the NFL, and they’ve done it while absorbing an all-star list of season-ending injuries. This is a team to love. What happens in the playoffs starting the weekend of Jan. 13-14, well, we’ll find out when we get there. For now, with games at home against Oakland and Dallas, the Eagles need just one win to secure home-field advantage for the NFC playoffs. And it is a home-field advantage. What’s happened this year with the Eagles and the fan base has gone beyond a 12-2 record. Something special is brewing on and off the field here. Road games are becoming home games with the huge Eagles fan base making its presence known at visiting stadiums. In

‘The fan base, the way they support this team, it’s incredible. And very much appreciated...’ – Eagles tight end Zach Ertz

California, it was all-Eagles, all the time, for two games. Eagles fans had a strong presence to open the season at Washington and then took over at New York. Thursday night in Carolina had strong rep, too. Dallas, as always, was an E-A-G-L-E-S EAGLES! Fest. After winning only one game on the road last year, the Eagles were 6-2 in 2017 away from Philadelphia. “The fan base, the way they support this team, it’s incredible, tight end Zach Ertz said. “And very much appreciated and recognized. We all hear it.

At Lincoln Financial Field, the Eagles are 6-0, with five of the wins coming by double digits. The exception was the win that launched the season at warp speed in the right direction – the 27-24 thriller over the Giants won on a last-play, 61yard field goal by Jake Elliott in Week 3, the home opener. Since then, it’s been blowout city, with wins of 34-7 (over Arizona), 34-24 (Washington), 33-10 (San Francisco), 51-23 (Denver) and 31-3 (Chicago). Surely, it’s going to get a lot tougher moving forward as the Eagles finish the regular season against Oakland on Christmas night and then Dallas on Dec. 31. And that’s where you come in. All

Pederson has coached aggressively, intelligently and strategically impressively. It all starts with Pederson and trickles down from him through a locker room that has been as unselfish as could be. A second-year coach and his second-year quarterback (Carson Wentz) ran off 10 wins in 12 games before Wentz went down with an injury and the secondstring quarterback (Nick Foles) brought the Eagles from behind in the fourth quarter one week and then threw four touchdown passes the next week. There has been a lot to like about this team, with a lot more season to go. In this season of Yuletide carols and holiday happiness, a little “E-A-G-L-E-S EAGLES is in order.

of the noise and the energy and the intensity at Lincoln Financial Field comes from the fans. The environment there this season – not to slight other years, mind you – has been innnncrreeeedddiiibbbbbllllleeee. I’ve been on every NFL sideline over the years, and Lincoln Financial Field ranks among the most intimidating. The fans are in full throat, they know what’s going on in the game more than any stadium, and they looooveee this football team. That much is very obvious. The Eagles are an extremely likable team with a head coach who has kept this team on course despite losing a starting left tackle, running back/return man, middle linebacker and, um, a quarterback.
