n August 28, 1963, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. gave one of, if not the most iconic speeches in American history. On the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., to a crowd of nearly 250,000 civil rights supporters, King delivered his infamous “I Have a Dream” speech. To this day, its contents continue to inspire and

Time to speak up To the Editor: Parents United for Public Education will seek to work with any and all appointees to the School Reform Commission. As parents, however, we have limited confidence in any appointment by Gov. Tom Corbett, who has made it a near singular mission to defund and dismantle public education in Philadelphia, as well as statewide. Moreover, we believe the appointment of any new individuals to the Commission does not change the fundamentally flawed nature of an entity that is ultimately beholden to politics over effective governance. The approval process for SRC commissioners is conducted in back rooms and through private conversations with select state senators. It is neither open nor transparent. SRC Commissioners have no clear statements of qualifications or responsibilities and all too often exhibit a stunning lack of awareness of their obligations as

public servants. In the past year, the SRC oversaw mass school closings, which the district now acknowledges resulted in too many students ending up in schools worse than the ones they had previously attended. It has failed to deal responsibly with ethics and transparency problems. More than a year ago an independent advisory body drafted a list of recommendations to improve ethics and transparency in the district; to this date, the SRC has failed even to make the recommendations public despite calls to do so by the watchdog group Committee of Seventy. They are dealing with the fallout of one of the largest test cheating scandals in the nation. More than 800 formal complaints of insufficient education have been filed with the state of Pennsylvania, which the SRC shows a remarkable lack of curiosity in investigating. And they have consistently failed to stabilize funding

for the district despite, or perhaps even because of, their political appointments. Gov. Corbett shows little interest in the actual conditions of Philadelphia schools or in the problematic ways the SRC is handling the business of governance. As a result, the SRC continues to fail to live up to its once stated promise. It has failed the students of Philadelphia, the staff and families of the School District, and the City overall. It is time for an elected school board that represents the children of the district, their families and the public interest. The 25-mile challenge To the Editor: In December 2013, state Rep. Jordan A. FALLEN BRANCH: The South Philadelphia Branch, 1700 S. Broad St., closed New Year’s Eve as part of a plan that will see The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia demolish it and the adjacent recreation center. The work will yield the erection of a three-story structure that will house a CHOP facility, a city health center, a library and a recreation center next to the refurbished DiSilvestro Playground. The library’s website notes a likely November or December 2015 debut. SPR

South PhillyReview in his district, urging them and their families to make cycling a regular part of their lives. Now as we enter the second phase of the ‘Bike 186’ campaign, Rep. Harris asks the youth of District 186 and their parents to hop on their new bikes and join him as he commits to cycling 25 miles every week. Harris keeps a bike of his own in both his Philadelphia and Harrisburg offices. On days he can not venture outdoors, Harris will use a stationary bike. Each Friday, he will track his weekly mileage via Facebook. He asks that followers match his weekly goal of 25 miles, and share their accomplishments as well as photos of themselves on their bike. To follow Harris’ progress or share ‘Bike 186’ goals, visit: facebook. com/RepJordanHarris As spring approaches, the ‘Bike 186’ campaign will focus on tackling harder issues, including nutrition and lifestyle changes in order to help children cultivate healthy, well-balanced lives. In addition to providing hundreds of disadvantaged youth with bikes, Harris has helped to secure funding to expand the Schuylkill River Trail in his district. The Schuylkill River Trail was named one of America’s best bike trails by The Active Times. Access to the trail will provide the district’s youth with miles of safe and beautiful space to ride their new bicycles this spring. Today, nearly one in three children in America is overweight or obese. Child obesity rates have tripled among school-aged children and adolescents over the past 30 years. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, obesity rates among preschoolers are falling in many states, but Pennsylvania is one of three states where they rose from 2008 to ’11. According to Discovery News, cycling has been associated with increased weight loss, mental health, and cardiovascular and muscular fitness in individuals who ride bicycles regularly. The sport has also been linked to improving overall health within communities. An ’11 study in the American Journal of Public Health found that “communities with more walkers and cyclists are healthier than those where people must rely on cars to get around.â€? Young adult slain A 26-year-old Girard Estate resident died Sunday after suffering a single shot to the chest. ■ By Joseph Myers Review Managing Editor

W

hile Amber Long and her mother walked along the 900 block of North Front Street at 10:35 p.m. Sunday, two unknown men approached them behind, with the first snatching the matriarch’s purse and the other encountering resistance as he tried to nab the handbag of the 17th-and-Ritner-streets resident, Lt. John Stanford, of the Philadelphia Police Department’s Office of Media Relations, said. The momentarily-deterred figure shot Long once in the chest and grabbed the item containing $40, with both offenders fleeing northbound on Front Street in a black Impala. Following transport to Hahnemann Hospital, Long, who worked for a Center City architectural firm, died at 11:15 that night. Authorities revealed they had taken two men of interest into custody Monday night and are hoping to make an arrest soon, Homicide Unit Capt. James Clark said. The City of Philadelphia is offering a $20,000 reward for the arrest and conviction of anyone in the homicide. To report information, call the Homicide Unit at 215-686-3334.

woman entered Center City’s Metropolitan Diner, with the female approaching a patron while her accomplices acted as lookouts, authorities said. The footage shows the woman lifting the complainant’s wallet from a pocketbook, with all three schemers leaving the site together. Later that day, they arrived at Home Depot, 2200 Oregon Ave., and used pilfered credit cards to purchase more than $1,500 in gift cards. Authorities link the three to a Jan. 10 Center City theft akin to the original diner heist. Marconi madness Two offenders inflicted head injuries to a man in Marconi Saturday night. Responding to a 7:58 p.m. call, authorities ventured to the 2700 block of South 17th Street where they met with a man who relayed that a pair of unknown males walked up to him and hit him in the head with an unknown object, presumably a bat, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. When the victim, who had been intending to make his way to his vehicle on the same block, fell to the ground, his attackers continued to deliver blows to his body before fleeing southbound on 17th Street. The victim headed home to call for help, receiving transport to the Thomas Jefferson University Hospital Trauma Unit, Tolliver said, where he received assistance for his head injuries. He could describe the aggressors only as possibly being white and wearing hoodies. To report information, call South Detectives at 215-685-1635, text PPDTIP (773847) or visit phillypolice.com/forms.

Three men, including one with a gun, made life difficult for two Dickinson Square West employees Monday night. Entering the Santa Fe Food Market, 521 Reed St., at 9:30 p.m., the main offender produced a silver gun and pointed it at the first female complainant to demand money, with an accomplice guarding the front door, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. Hearing yelling, the second worker reacted to inspect and had the gun pointed in her face, too, with the lead suspect motioning to a black bag.

POLICE REPORT The second intruder then placed approximately $600 in the holder before he, the first figure and another male fled eastbound on Reed Street, Tolliver said. The distraught women described the individuals as black, with the first being 25 to 30 years old; having a dark complexion, a thin face with a beard but no mustache, a small, thin nose and a thin build; and wearing a black hoodie and matching pants; the second as having a thin build and wearing dark clothing; and the third as 25 to 30 years old and having short, black, curly hair, a dark complexion, large lips and wide eyes. Residence ransacked

Shooter on loose A shooter with robbery possibly on his mind left a man in stable condition Monday afternoon in Dickinson Square West. At 2:42 p.m., police reached the 600 block of Watkins Street, meeting with a man who had reported a shooting, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. The law enforcement workers found him lying on the ground with a single gunshot wound to the chest and secured transport for him to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. The injured party noted only that robbery appeared to be the motive and could provide no further information on the matter. He described the shooter as a black male and 21 or 22 years old.

Nonsense in Newbold

POLICE REPORT continued from page 6

Late Friday night and early Saturday morning began poorly for a woman in Newbold, with as many as four offenders confronting and injuring her. The female told authorities, who met her at Methodist Hospital, 2301 S. Broad St., at midnight that at 11:40 p.m. she had been walking westbound on 18th Street and Snyder Avenue when the unknown figures approached her, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. One produced a box cutter and barked obscenities at her, with all of the individuals assaulting her. The ensuing struggle left her with a cut on her lip, with a friend transporting her to the health facility, Tolliver said, where she received 15 stitches to close the wound. The victim could state only that her attackers were three or four black females. To report information, call South Detectives at 215-685-1635, text PPDTIP (773847) or visit phillypolice.com/forms.

Directionally challenged A man seeking directions ended up assaulted in Queen Village Saturday morning. Responding to a 2:30 a.m. call, authorities learned the complainant had become a victim of violence in the proximity of a Rite Aid at 520 S. Second St., Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. He told them he had approached a resting white Nissan or Honda to ask its occupants for directions and then observed two men come out of the automobile to venture over to his ride. Minus any provocation, they started to kick and punch his head and body, leading to a trip to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, where he required 10 staples for a significant head laceration. Their blows, Tolliver said, also caused a tooth to dislodge, with the aggressors, who took nothing, fleeing on foot along South Street. The victim said a female then drove their vehicle off in an unknown direction. He described the attackers as black, approximately 5-foot-9 and in their early 20s and the woman and another female in the car as black and in their early 20s. To report information, call South Detectives at 215-685-1635, text PPDTIP (773847) or visit phillypolice.com/forms. Bella Vista homeowners could not prevent a burglar from making off with valuable possessions Saturday night. Police reached the 700 block of Clymer Street at 9:17 p.m., learning the occupants had been lying in bed when an unknown person entered their space with a flashlight, leading the male resident to ask about the individual’s identity, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. The intruder bolted down the steps and out their rear door in an unknown direction. Authorities futilely surveyed the area, Tolliver said, but learned from the dwellers, who could not determine the interloper’s gender or race, that they were missing two Dell Inspiron laptop computers, a ladies Michael Kors watch, a men’s Rolex Oyster watch, two Samsung Galaxy cell phones, a pair of diamond earrings, a white Kindle and an Apple iPod Touch. ver the course of three days in Durham, N.C., hundreds of coffee professionals descended upon the Big Eastern U.S. Coffee Competition to earn a spot at the U.S. National Coffee Competition in Seattle, Wash., this April. With coffee professionals traveling from as far as Maine and Florida, South Philadelphia baristas thoroughly impressed the esteemed judges and placed extremely high. The competition, presented by the Specialty Coffee Association of America and the Barista Guild of America, includes two regions (Northeast and Southeast) and two divisions (Brewer’s Cup and Barista). Both divisions offer distinctly different challenges. With Brewer’s Cup, competitors are judged in a tasting round in which they all brew the same coffee and are judged and scored based on taste alone. If they qualify, they brew and present their own coffee. With the Barista Competition, participants must face four sensory (taste and presentation) judges and two technical judges (execution of best practices) and present each judge with an espresso, cappucino and a signature beverage from their creative coffee imagination. Unsurprisingly, Philly competitors did extremely well, representing a varied crosssection of cafés, coffees and geographies. But the big winner was Erika Lee Vonie, a resident of the 1800 block of Sigel Street. She finished in second place in the barista competition and missed first place by less than one-half of a point. “I’m really, really happy with my place and score at Big Eastern,” the Ultimo Coffee Bar, 1900 S. 15th St., employee said. “I put an incredible amount of time and energy into preparing for this competition, and I truly feel I earned the place I got. I’m only half a point away from the highest score this competition season so far.” She was bested by one barista, Counter Culture Coffee in New York City’s J. Park Brannen. Her signature beverage was called “Lovage on Top.” “It is a savory sweet, cold coffee cocktail made of an infusion of lovage (an herb which tastes like savory celery) soda syrup with celery and fenugree seeds, mixed with Tairora Cherry Project espresso from Papau New Guinea, which is chilled, with a very small amount of lightly carbonated

spearmint/cucumber seltzer,” the Point Breeze dweller said. Her boss and mentor, Aaron Ultimo, was extremely pleased and proud with her performance and results. Ultimo has been working with Vonie and James Klapp, a resident of the 1900 block of Hicks Street, who snatched second place in the Brewer’s Cup division, for some time, preparing them for last weekend’s competition. “I am incredibly proud to have had both our competitors place so highly in both the barista competition and the brewers cup in such an amazing pack of coffee professionals,” Ultimo, also the proprietor of a second eponymous Graduate Hospital location at 2149 Catharine St., explained. “They have been preparing for months against a very strict timeline… through repeated practice they found the best ways to brew [their chosen coffees] and present it. Both spent uncountable hours tweaking their brewing parameters and technique…and refining a

script that completely conveyed the levels of attention that went into making it taste they way it did, from seed to cup.” ULTIMO AND HIS family, residents of the 1800 block of Mole Street, chose South Philly after a stint in Washington, D.C. He fell into coffee nearly 13 years ago after graduating from Eastern University in St. Davids, Pa. But his deeper commitment to improving coffee options in Newbold took root in 2008, when he was approached by John Longacre, the owner of South Philly Tap Room, 1590 Mifflin St., and American Sardine Bar, 1800 Federal St. “It was a great opportunity for us to fulfill our dream without the risk of doing it totally on our own in a ‘high profile’ location somewhere in Center City,” Ultimo announced. “I loved the romance of carving out our spot in an underserved part of the city that had the potential to become the hub of a developing community.

Since we opened we have seen a tremendous amount of support from the Newbold neighborhood.” It may seem trivial and confusing to folks who just like to drink Dunkin’ Donuts coffee, but the competition scene is rife with coffee-lovers who are dedicated to providing top-notch coffee experiences for customers. And these competitions are great learning opportunities. “The best way to get better is to do this more and more,” the event’s organizer, Hugo Neuproler, a 32-year-old from Vancouver, British Columbia, who explained that the top six from each region go on to compete at Nationals, said. Brian Gelletly, a barista at Fishtown’s ReAnimator Coffee and resident of the 1400 block of South Broad Street, made the trip as well. He’s no stranger to competition and missed entry into Nationals by 71 points (the winner claimed 623 points). “I enjoy competing because there is a bit of notoriety within the specialty coffee industry for people who do well, and it’s a good way to make a name for yourself and your company,” Gelletly, a former Ultimo Newbold fixture, said. “Practicing for the competition makes you focus more on tasting critically and working to improve your ability to communicate concrete tastebased information related to coffee.” In their 15-minute presentations (points are taken off for every second one exceeds 15 minutes with a disqualification if passing 16 minutes), competitors are wired for hands-free microphones. It’s often with their words that baristas win the high scores to accompany great taste and technical skill. Vonie’s performance, for instance, was jam-packed with roaster names, farms, dairy details and highly-specific flavor profile notes. Todd Carmichael, of La Colombe Torrefaction, snagged the title of Brewer’s Cup champion, while Square One Coffee representatives from Lancaster took home third in the Brewer’s Cup division (Caleb Lewis) and fifth in the Barista category (Hadassah Wilson). “I was so proud to be a part of the Philly crew at the Big Eastern,” Gelletly gushed. “This is the most representation of this city and area I’ve seen in the five years I’ve been aware of the competitions.” SPR Contact Staff Writer Bill Chenevert at bchenevert@southphillyreview.com or ext. 117. have made the voyage to the Lorraine Hotel, which is now the site of a National Civil Rights Museum. “It makes you think about it and gives you more insight into the life of a man who dedicated his life to human rights,” Busby said. “It lets you know he was an ordinary person, just like you and I, but he dedicated his life to humanity. And a person’s life was cut down in the middle of it by doing good.” The museum features a chilling representation of the hotel room as he left it: sheets turned down, his speech mid-edit, his shoes on the floor, his jacket hanging on the chair. Keeping to their word, Belle mentioned the numerous organizations that they support year-round, including: Project HOME, namely the Fairmount Avenue location; Project 300 Ministry, a homeless resource on Spring Garden Street; and Clothes Pin, a Center City non-profit that funnels clothes to those in need. On Monday, though, Belle and Busby led a crew of volunteers who used the day to clean their building and environs, inside and out. Belle touched on one of the most important aspects of the celebration of a great man’s spirit. “He wasn’t just for black people – he was for people and that was so awesome. He had a dream and it’s good to dream; for blacks, whites, green, purple, polka dot, it’s a wonderful dream,” she said. AT THE CAMBODIAN Association of Greater Philadelphia’s (CAGP) South Center, 2416-18 S. Seventh St., almost 100 people of all ages participated in a series of projects and remembrance activities. CAGP has organized years of MLK service project that were mostly cleanups, but this year they decided to do much more. Sarun Chan, a resident of the 800 block of Reed Street and an Associate Director at CAGP, is the founder of its Teens Organizing Proactivity (TOP) program. As a lesson for the youth he works for and as a challenge to put together something great, he put this year’s celebration of King in their hands. “This year is TOP’s fourth year of programming, and we asked the youth to take the lead and coordinate the event,” Chan explained. “Planning events like MLK Day of Service helps youth develop, and they see the impact they are making. After a few planning meetings, TOP finalized the event by bringing together American, immigrant, and refugee communities for a conversation about Martin Luther King, Jr, his dream; and our own dreams growing up as immigrants and refugees in the community.” The docket of service projects CAGP coordinated on Monday is pretty deep. From a cleanup effort on 36 blocks that included Mifflin Square Park, Fifth and Wolf streets, to providing free health screens via Temple

the words “I Have A Dream” written large across four panels and invited the day’s participants to fill out speech bubbles and empty blocks with their dreams for change. Some were simple requests for peace, the eradication of hunger and hate, and some were heartbreakingly honest wishes to feel safe in their own home or to feel like their parents respect them and love them despite their disparate cultural realities. Many young Cambodian immigrants struggle with language barriers and differences of understanding; some parents struggle to understand the idea of volunteering for a good cause, or working for free. Thanh Tran, 18, and Sophia Lim, 19 and a TOP alumnus, of North and West Philly, respectively, helped Vuong explain a brainchild they were particularly proud of – the Mr. and Ms. Asian Teen Philly Pageant. Last year, contestants wore hoodies and held a minute-long moment of silence to honor the death of Florida teenager Trayvon Martin. Though immigrants often endure an entirely different set of challenging circumstances in their daily lives, they certainly identify with the African American experience, distinctly and expressly so on the MLK Service Day. “Our Cambodian community has gone through so much war, genocide, and poverty,” Chan said. “Struggling with our own new world, we faced low-education, high poverty, health and mental health disparities and lack of English. I just want to see [King’s] dream live through and vibrate positive energy through our community so we can lift ourselves from these struggles, so that we can finally spend less time fighting to survive, and spend more time loving our families.” SPR Contact Staff Writer Bill Chenevert at bchenevert@southphillyreview.com or ext. 117. The gift of Gabrielle A Passyunk Square dweller will enlist dance duets to share her passion for populist pieces. ■ By Joseph Myers Review Managing Editor

A

constant crusader for, and frequent recipient of, creative scrutiny, Gabrielle Revlock deems dance her best guide to giving fellow fanatics of observation many moments to understand exchanges of emotions. The 33-year-old performer and choreographer will again act as an advocate tomorrow and Saturday by premiering “Confetti,” a 13-section work relying on duets to develop her appreciation for interpretation. “People will definitely have occasions to read relationships into the piece,” the resident of the 1300 block of Ellsworth Street said last week at the University of Pennsylvania’s Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts, her brainchild’s host venue. “When they do, I hope they see themselves and make note of how our collective energy fuses.” An element of the location’s By Local Series, “Confetti” will find the Passyunk Square inhabitant fulfilling her desire to devise material that focuses more on respecting shared space than achieving a sense of uniformity and perfection. To encourage that yearning, Revlock Staff photos by K at h r y n P o o l e

LIFESTYLES counts trained and amateur dancers, including her mother, among her contributors and is infusing the presentation with her customarily quirky sense of humor. “I love the world that I’m in,” the owner of a lithe body and brain said of being a practitioner and disciple of contemporary, postmodern and avant-garde creations. “I get paid to roll around and make silly faces. What’s not to find appealing in that for me?” Well aware that many admirers of her field demand linear narratives and decry esoteric opuses, Revlock calls for seeing present innovations as keys to addressing the often puzzling yet ultimately rewarding task of analyzing the nature of present-day life. “The mysteries are the joy of it,” she said of having the ability to decipher meaning rather than dealing with the chore of accepting established notions of artistic pieces’ aims. “I get that following some stuff can be difficult, but at the heart of most of it, and certainly with ‘Confetti,’ that complexity often reveals simplicity and the belief that somehow, we’re all linked. That’s kind of why I see my work as populist.” Stemming from an infatuation with “twoness,” Revlock elected to elevate the aforementioned sentiment by having duets do the deed of stressing interconnectedness. As she

had wanted to observe how multiple stage partners can enhance her affinity to the nobody-is-an-island philosophy, she will share her atoms with, among others, a child and a classical Indian dance expert. Eager to oversee her first evening-length work, she sees her overall mission as being a touter of traditional views wrapped in a novel style. “I think that’s going to come through because I’m working with such an eclectic group,” Revlock said. “No matter our backgrounds, we’re striving to make connections. We all weave our own stories as audience members, and that’s where we find strength.” THE WEST PHILLY native has always championed the benefits of applying oneself, using her diligence to become class valedictorian at Julia R. Masterman High School. While earning an art history degree at Vassar College, she added dancing to her pursuits, which helped her to answer the dreaded “What am I going to do now?” inquiry that many postsecondary learners pose as graduation nears. “I think it was essential to putting me on this path,” Revlock said of an instructor’s backing. “Dance can be a tough discipline to survive in, but I knew I had to see what kind of progress I could make.”

Returning to her birth city, she founded Mano/Damno Projects in 2002, with the subsequent stretch yielding numerous alliances with entities such as the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts and the Pew Center for Arts & Heritage and stagings through FringeArts, for whom she earned a LAB Fellow residency two years ago, Philadelphia Dance Projects and the Opera Company of Philadelphia, among many others. Her alma mater, Bryn Mawr College and Drexel University have commissioned company creations, and she has garnered kudos as a ’10 Philadelphia Dance Award honoree and an ’11 A.W.A.R.D. Show finalist prize victor. “I’ve been very fortunate that all of this hard work has put me in a situation where I’m able to follow my ambition and create,” Revlock, who last month traveled to the Empire State to offer “Halo” through the New York Live Arts Fresh Tracks residency, said. “Plus, I’ve connected with great people.” Many of those figures, including childhood friend Bonnie Friel, a resident of the 1500 block of Mifflin Street and a “Confetti” performer, will interact with her this year as she contemplates how to inspire and rid possible connoisseurs of all apprehension. Immediately following the

debut, she will turn her attention to teaming with Nicole Bindler, of the 700 block of Federal Street, for CardioCreativity, a series of Fairmount-situated classes she contends will help attendees to connect with their bodies. “Dancing is about sharing experiences, meeting new people and feeling healthy,” she said of the sessions, which will mark her return to teaching, a practice that years ago took her to numerous South Philly schools. “I’m enthusiastic about helping everyone along.” She and her Passyunk Square peer Bindler also will bond in April, as they will present “The Dance Apocalypse,” a Pew Center funding winner, at the Fishtownbased FringeArts Theater. With so much on her calendar and interest in taking sections of “Confetti” on tour, Revlock seems determined to dance her way into the hearts and minds of everyone eager to side with solidarity over disparity. “We all need that push to learn,” she said. “Dance is mine and I hope it can be so for others.” SPR For tickets, visit annenbergcenter.org. Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery at Jefferson “People say weight-loss surgery makes a big difference in their lives. But what they don’t tell you is, it also makes a difference for everyone around them. For example, take my wife and three kids – 15, 13 and 9. For them, it’s meant fewer snacks and more exercise – as well as a whole new Dad. Today, I’m 140 pounds lighter. But the way it’s changed my life, that’s something you just can’t measure.” Paul had a sleeve gastrectomy, a laparoscopic procedure with short recovery times and an excellent record of success. January jam

T

hat School Reform Commission sure is sneaky. They want to make it easier for parents who want to transfer their kids from public school into parochial or charter schools. Right now, there are multiple confusing forms to fill out, so their proposal is to simplify the process — use just one form to accomplish the transfer. Call it “open enrollment.” But here comes self-described agitator Helen Gym to the rescue. See, Helen realized simplification was just another way to “chase” children out of the public school system. Kids aren’t fleeing Philly public schools; they’re being “chased” out of them by simplifying the enrollment process. The solution is simple according to Gym, just make the public schools better, and we can eliminate the transfer forms altogether. We make public schools better by closing off the escape routes. ... Philadelphia Magazine’s website is on top of the news. Sometimes it’s even ahead of the news. Less than two weeks into January, it had a screaming headline about how the city’s 2014 murder rate is “skyrocketing.” It seems like only yesterday, actually it was nearly yesterday, when the City was congratulating itself on the fact that the murder rate had dipped to its lowest since the mid-1990s. Some of you cynics might feel that it’s a little early to be projecting a “skyrocketing” murder rate less than two weeks into the new year, but Philly Mag knows a trend when it sees one. It also has an ability to see skyrockets where others might see a caution light. ... The last couple of months have been a bonanza for the various folks who forecast the weather on TV in Philadelphia. Is it my imagination or do the local stations have more folks predicting the weather these days than we have troops in Afghanistan? It used to be that we could depend on a water main break or a fire in an empty warehouse to headline the evening news, but now more often than not, the big story is weather related. One would think that it’s enough that we have already suffered multiple snow “events.” The use of the word “event” rather than “storm” is instructional. In a snow “event,” the weather people are covered, even if only a few flakes fall. Call it a storm and if wrong, you could wind up like John Bolaris. Lacking bad weather in our viewing area, the local news will often lead with a storm somewhere else in the country. On a quiet weather night re-

■ s o u t h p h i l l y r e v i e w.c o m

cently, TV 3’s Kathy Orr mentioned there were blizzard conditions “not that far from us.” Turned out the storm was in Buffalo where it’s only a story when it doesn’t snow. The other night, NBC 10’s Sheena Parveen warned that although there was no snow in the forecast it was going to be “windy” on Sunday — “really windy.” I confess that I kind of like to watch Action News just to see what color scarf Adam Joseph is wearing. I also favor CBS 3 to watch which personality gets stuck riding around town in its mobile weather van (rumor has it Carol Erickson and Kate Bilo draw straws, with the shorter one getting the back seat of the van). I’ve yet to figure out the purpose of the mobile weather van, which has so many controls it resembles the Starship Enterprise. One night Bilo explained it for me. She peeked out the window and said see, you can see it is snowing out there. ... At this writing, Chris Christie and Bridgegate is the big January story, one some say, may impact the 2016 election. Bridgegate is only a big story if you never heard of the political axiom, “reward your friends and punish your enemies.” Of course there is another political axiom, closing down traffic lanes may be crossing the line just a wee bit. I predict this will turn out to be a big plus for the victims, Fort Lee and its mayor. Never again will Gov. Christie ever be in a position where he doesn’t grant a request to the mayor of Fort Lee. Christie may actually be considering keeping three lanes open at rush hour exclusively for Fort Lee residents. Let’s be fair, Christie has denied any knowledge of causing the traffic jam. And it is not true that initially the idea was for him to feign a heart attack and lay down across the bridge and block traffic, perhaps even more effectively. Of course the good government folks in their typical fashion have overreacted. One group wanted Washington to get the Russians to accept Christie in a swap for Edward Snowden. A well-known Jersey reformer suggested the Bridgegate investigation focus on whether Christie actually has a fitness trainer. I, for one, think the main story here is that yet another scandal has the word “gate” appended to it. People, we have to get more creative. We called the Nixon scandal Watergate because the break-in occurred in the Watergate Hotel. Is that really a reason for the media since then to use the word “gate” to label every scandal forevermore? I can’t see the Christie scandal lasting in the public mind until the ’16 election. The public mind has advanced Alzheimer’s and has trouble remembering we once invaded Iraq by mistake. SPR Comment at southphillyreview.com/opinion/ cardella.

Chris Pine steps into some stealthy shoes as Jack Ryan, the CIA super-agent and brainchild of Tom Clancy that all started with 1990’s “The Hunt for Red October.”

Strongly recruited ■ By R. Kurt Osenlund Movie Reviewer

O

dds are few people were pining for another entry in the Jack Ryan film series, which has seen Alec Baldwin, Ben Affleck, and, most memorably, Harrison Ford play Tom Clancy’s CIA super-agent. And yet, “Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit,” a franchise reboot with Chris Pine stepping into the lead role, is a surprisingly welcome espionage thriller, requiring no loyalty to, or even knowledge of, its mixed bag of predecessors. The film kicks off during Jack’s college days circa 9/11, jumps forward three years to show his military injury while fighting in Afghanistan, then finally settles into present-day, after he’s been recruited into the CIA by handler Thomas Harper (Kevin Costner), and has shacked up with Dr. Cathy Muller (Keira Knightley), who nursed him back to health. Working incognito on Wall Street to sniff out terrorist funding, Jack discovers a heinous plot hatched by Viktor Cherevin, a shady Russian businessman played by Kenneth Branagh, who also directed. Praised as an actor but underrated as a filmmaker, Branagh is adept at both disciplines, offering panache and formidability on both sides of the camera. Though he plays a prickly stereotype, Branagh makes Viktor a rather delectable villain, reminiscent of so many Slavic baddies of the past. And with a tone that’s at once sober and cheeky, he turns what could have been a throwaway actioner into a standout affair that’s briskly smart, yet surprisingly whimsical. Branagh’s approach helps at virtually every turn, from getting us through verbose debriefing scenes that might bog down the pace to de-cluttering Jack’s relationship to Cathy, who’s uncannily un-

derstanding of her partner’s secrecy, then brought into the fold for a remarkable con sequence (Branagh channels Brian De Palma’s “Mission: Impossible,” and that’s a huge compliment). Car chases are swift and compelling, scam specifics are choreographed with great sleekness, and in moments that need to underscore Jack’s dueling competence and inexperience, Pine delivers as a leading man. Viewers should be wary of any franchise films these days, as most are just out to make a buck with an established name. “Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit” is an exception to the rule.

In director Stacie Passon’s intimate, artfully cohesive “Concussion,” undersung dynamo Robin Weigert (HBO’s “Deadwood”) plays Abby, a lesbian housewife who’s fallen into a middle-age rut, and becomes an escort in an effort to regain her mojo. Embedding Abby in a largely straight and accepting suburban community, Passon makes her heroine’s orientation a non-issue, and focuses instead on the aching ennui so common among so many. An exceptional adult drama.SPR Comment and see the trailers for this week’s movies at southphillyreview.com/arts-and-entertainment/movies.

Rydell debuting at the Kimmel

B

elieve it or not, the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts opened in 2001 on South Broad Street, and in those 12-plus years since, one South Philly icon has never graced its stage. Well, that will change 8 p.m. Saturday as the artist born Robert Ridarelli, and better known as Bobby Rydell, 71, is one of the big names on Jerry “The Geator” Blavat’s “Great Voices of the '60s” program. Eddie Holman, Jay Black and Gary U.S. Bonds are a few of the other talents that will be performing. The Lower Moyamensing native, who grew up on the 2400 block of South 11th Street (now known as Bobby Rydell Boulevard), recently chatted with the South Philly Review about everything from performing with the Golden Boys to his double organ transplant. Here are excerpts from the conversation. SPR: How did this Kimmel Center debut come about?

Rydell: “A couple months ago Jerry [Blavat] said he would like to have me as part of the show. Jerry and I go back a long time from our days at Bishop Neumann [High School].” SPR: What are your thoughts about performing there?

Rydell: “It’s a gorgeous theater. I am really looking forward to working it.” SPR: Where else are you performing these days?

Rydell: “I leave for Australia Feb. 2 for three weeks. It’s my 21st visit. That’s one of my favorite places to perform. The food is wonderful, and for some odd reason, I have a tremendous following in Australia. “I am appearing with Frankie Avalon and Fabian March 7 at the Sands Bethlehem and March 8 at the Golden Nugget Atlantic City.” SPR: Talk a little about your double organ transplant [July 2012]?

Rydell: “The doctors told me that with my liver, I had maybe another week. It’s truly a miracle the way everything happened. “With the Gift of Life you have to wait at least a year to meet the parents of the organ donor. I invited [the donor’s mother] to the show, and it was very, very emotional. At my shows, I talk about how important it is to become an organ donor.” SPR: What do you have to say about South Philly?

Rydell: “South Philly is a big part of my life and will be forever. You can take the kid out of South Philly, but you can’t take South Philly out of the kid.” SPR Tickets are $41 to $100. Call 215-893-1999, or visit kimmelcenter.org. Comment at southphillyreview.com/news/feature.

Leslie’s Broccoli Casserole

Back for seconds

C

hildren, don’t be scared by the word broccoli. Even big kids (don’t try to hide adults), hate the taste and texture of this healthy green that is a strong source of vitamin C. However, maybe if this miniature tree-trunk-shaped vegetable had a little company on the serving platter, the dreaded fear of tasting it would be reduced. Leslie McLaughlin, of the 1300 block of Castle Avenue, enjoys getting her healthy dose of greens via her Broccoli Casserole. One may enjoy the seven other ingredients so much that the palate may forget about those tiny bites of vegetables that just passed through the chewing lane. SPR

Bainbridge Street Barrel House’s Foie Gras Bon Bons

O

Chef Eric Paraskevas

Bainbridge Street Barrel House Owner: Marinos Fetfatzes Opened November 2012 625-27 S. Sixth St. 267-324-3553 bainbridgestreetbarrelhouse.com

ne of the advantages of getting an education from the Restaurant School at Walnut Hill College is a trip to France is included in the curriculum. Eric Paraskevas, a 2004 graduated, enjoyed this tasty perk, but his international culinary journey wasn’t all about taking sightseeing trips to the Eiffel Tower or the Louvre as students were required to turn in reports. With a culinary career being on his radar, the trip ended up being a very valuable experience. “There were techniques that I saw there that I still use today,” the 33-year-old chef, who joined the Bella Vista-based Bainbridge Street Barrel House during its November ’12 opening said. But it wasn’t Paraskevas’ first stop on the Philly foodie scene as previous stops included Center City’s The Happy Rooster and Continental among others. The passion for cooking dates back to his childhood days. “I desire to please people,” he

said. “We were the family that everyone came to for the holidays.” His menu for the future really started coming together during his teenage years. “I remember cooking for my friends and they really enjoyed it,” Paraskevas said. “I think it lit a spark.” The creativity remains intact several years later when he makes Foie Gras Bon Bons. “I think it’s a really interesting dish that shows the direction we are trying to take,” the South Jersey resident said of the “playful and approachable foods” that appear on the Bainbridge Street Barrel House menu.

S ta f f P h o t o s b y K at h r y n P o o l e

S A LT E D C A R A M E L I N G R E D I E N T S : 2 cups of sugar 2 cups of heavy cream Juice of one lemon

CHOCOLATE COATING

INGREDIENTS:

8 ounces of bittersweet chocolate 8 ounces of milk chocolate 2 tablespoons of shortening Peanuts, toasted and chopped, as needed

DIRECTIONS: Whip foie gras until soft and smooth; set aside. Whip the egg whites and sugar until they reach stiff peaks. Fold the whites into the foie gras. Place the mixture into an 8-by-4-inch pan lined with plastic wrap. Place it in the

freezer for at least six hours. To make the salted caramel, place the sugar and lemon juice into a pot over medium heat, and cook until it turns a golden brown color. Slowly whisk in the cream, and cook for about two minutes more. Set aside. Soften the ice cream, and place it over frozen foie gras mixture. Place back in the freezer. Over a double boiler, melt both chocolates and the shortening. Remove from heat, and allow to cool slightly. Remove from the pan using the wrap. Cover with the chocolate. Freeze for 30 minutes. Cut the bon bons into pieces, and drizzle with a little of the salted caramel. Serve immediately. SPR Comment at southphillyreview.com/ food-and-drink/features.

Sadly Missed And Forever Loved.

Love, Susan and Chris, Thomas and Peggy, Anthony and Frank, Ronnie and Rodger, Jimmy and Jill, Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren

Dear Anthony, It’s your birthday today. I still can’t believe it, still don’t want to believe it, just seem like yesterday to us. Your short years on earth came and went in a blink of an eye. My son won’t be calling me or walking through the front door ever again. Your presence is still felt. Me, your brother and daughter will carry your memory into the future. Your life will never be forgotten. People say it will get easier but they have no idea. They don’t know the pain in our hearts. The loss, the void, the ache, the dark places that a parent is taken to when their child passes from the world. I am changed forever. You have taught me a lesson to not take tomorrow for granted. To live now, to cherish your family and friends and to love unconditionally.

The Master Prentice A Grays Ferry scoring machine has helped her high school to its best hoops season.

■ By Joseph Myers Review Managing Editor

egine Prentice prides herself on providing whatever basketball roster she joins with hard work and great expectations. A key contributor to successful squads at Prep Charter High School, 1928 Point Breeze Ave., the 19-year-old senior guard last year sought a chance to change Universal Audenried Charter High School, 3301 Tasker St., into a contender and has reveled in the Rockets’ ascent, a climb that includes Friday’s 57-15 home triumph over the A. Philip Randolph Raptors. “We have a great attitude, and I think we’ll be right there at the end,” the resident of the 1300 block of South Corlies Street said after depositing 27 points. “We expect success so we have to go and make it happen.” The Grays Ferry inhabitant elected to enroll at her neighborhood secondary institution based on the dual influence of sophomore forward Deja McKinney and first-year coach Kevin Slaughter. The former suggested Prentice attend a summer instructional camp under the guidance of the latter, a 1993 Third-Team All-Public selection for his feats at West Philadelphia High School. Gravitating toward the group immediately, she left behind her days of competing for minutes as a West Passyunk-based baller to an opportunity to break ankles and records. “Regine is the missing piece, the lightning bolt that makes it all work,” Slaughter, of the 2400 block of Moore Street, said of his scoring machine, who started the contest averaging just under 22 points per tilt. “We’ve come to depend on her, and she’s responded every time.” The Point Breeze dweller has already seen his performers top their site’s previous program-best single-season total of seven victories, with the young ladies taking a 10-5 mark, including a 6-0 Division C slate, into their rendezvous with the Raptors. Relying on perimeter shooting from Prentice and interior intensity from McKinney and senior center Keaundra “Shaq” Clark, the Rockets entered a huge favorite to keep the visitors a one-win unit and opened the game on an 11-0 run. The aforementioned stars would account for all

of the host’s 18 first-quarter points, with Prentice earning 10 of them. “That’s our thing, trying to get on top of them early,” the gifted teenager said of building a 12-point cushion after eight minutes. Having shown her range to start the game, Prentice used the second quarter to display her defensive prowess, as she stole three passes and received the feed from teammates off two more to tally five layups. The frame essentially mirrored the first, as the

guests could not contain Prentice gu or stymie the tenacious Rockets’ defenders, whom Slaughter apde plauded for as loudly as the fans pl did di when the athletes took a 38-12 lead lea into halftime. “It’s looking really good for us today,” he said as they discussed shoring up plans to have the third yield as many points as the entire first half. “Win with class. Let it all hang out.” PRENTICE HAS ALWAYS enjoyed following similar advice. A prolific scorer since her days as a young chucker at Center City’s Seger Park, she regards herself as a hard worker and never succumbs to supplying herself with too many doubts or fears.

PRO SPORTS at southphillyreview.com/blogs.php “I really like that my game is built on being attentive and getting better,” she said of bringing a positive attitude to the Rockets’ bench, where she and Clark are the only seniors. “Our team setup is strong, and we’re feeling good about ourselves.” The Audenried crew filled Slaughter with pride Dec. 7, as his charges advanced to the title game of the Overbrook Tournament, an especially impressive accomplishment considering they needed to play three games that day. They dumped Sayre and West Philadelphia, respectively, behind 61 points from Prentice before running out of energy against Imhotep in a 67-22 loss in which she scored 17 points. “We learned a lot about ourselves last month, and we’ve been trying to improve ever since,” she said. Prentice and her contemporaries did not reach 70 during the third as Slaughter had desired, but she continued to toy with the opposition, banking in a three-pointer and hitting two difficult baseline floaters, as she again outscored the Raptors in helping to stretch the lead to 55-14. Because of the size of the deficit, the teams played with a running clock in the final, mostly uneventful, frame during which Prentice watched from the sideline. “There’s still a bit we have to work on,” the sharpshooter, who scored 15 points Monday in a 46-45 loss to Franklin Towne Charter at the Community College of Philadelphia-situated International Student Athlete Association MLK Showcase and who hoped to blast the Rockets past Elverson Military Academy yesterday in a game that ended after press time, said. “Me, I want to improve my defense, but that’s something I look forward to.” As Prentice, who will look for another stellar performance tomorrow at home versus Sankofa, masters matters, she will likely nab more suitors, with Cheyney, Georgia Southern, Lincoln and Morgan State universities already courting her. She enjoys handling the attention but wants it to come with continued respect for her team. “We can go to the state tournament, for sure,” Prentice said. “And win.” SPR Contact Managing Editor Joseph Myers at jmyers@southphillyreview.com or ext. 124. NoveNas 5 Day NoveNa to St. thereSa

St. Theresa, The Little Flower. Please pick me a rose form the heavenly garden, and send it to me with a message of love. Ask God to grant me the favor I implore and tell him I will love him daily more and more. This prayer is to be followed by 5 Hail Mary’s, 5 Our Father’s and 5 Gloria’s. The prayer is to be said by 11 AM daily for 5 days. On the 5th day you will receive a single rose or more in some form, but only if your favor is to be granted. Take note of what you have promised, if God grants the favor you implore. J.D.H
