outh Street Headhouse District’s executive director Michael Harris, and Queen Village Neighbors Association’s president Jeff Hornstein are very optimistic about the future of Bainbridge Green in part because of Jonathan Rubin. Rubin, as chair of the Friends of Bainbridge Green, is leading the charge to turn Bainbridge Street, between South Third and Fifth streets, into

something much more than it is now. “For 11 years, I lived and worked looking at the space in all of its good times and bad times. From raucous Saturday nights to Sunday mornings when it’s beautiful and quiet,” Rubin said. “I’ve walked up and down it 1,000 times.” The slightly peculiar space has been an iconic strip of Queen Village mere steps from South Street, Fabric Row and East Passyunk Avenue. And the general consensus is that it could be so much more.

Healthy beat

“There’s a lot to the space – it’s not just a little strip of land,” Rubin argued, “people don’t even know it’s there.” He mentioned that if someone uses Google Maps to look at the space, he or she wouldn’t guess that Bainbridge Green is already technically a green space. “It’s represented as brown or white, as concrete, and not as a park, and we want to turn it green,” See BAINBRIDGE GREEN page 10 >>

Enforcement needed

Remembering a contributor

To the Editor: I understand the motor-pedestrian law to read that if a pedestrian is in a crosswalk when the traffic light changes, the driver of a car is to allow the pedestrian to finishing crossing in front of the car. This may be the law, but it is also common sense. My problem is with the pedestrians who take advantage of the law and walk out in traffic regardless of the traffic lights or the cars. Often, they never look in any direction, sometimes attached to some tech device, paying no attention to the possibility of being struck by a car. Recently, a pedestrian ran in front of my car from the right corner of the street to the left corner on the diagonal. I could have struck her. Both of us were saved by people yelling on the street. A colorful fall performance To the Editor: My favorite time of year — other than Christmas, of course — is finally here! Breezy, cool days and crisp, chilly nights just seem to warm the heart. Changing colors of autumn can be seen just about everywhere one turns. Many neighborhoods have harvest foliage and decorations surrounding their homes and the aroma of apple, cinnamon and pumpkin scented candles. All the neighborhood stores are overflowing with signs of the arrival of this

very welcomed transition. I consider fall not only very beautiful, but also a very creative time of year. It’s so nice to have our windows open and not feel the constriction of the annoying air conditioner or the hot air that can sometimes be suffocating. It’s the awesome break that we all need before getting ready for the hustle and bustle of the holidays. It is a time to breathe in the fresh air and bask in the very moderate and comfortable weather while it lasts. Although we did have a fairly tolerable summer, I will always feel that one hot day is one too many. As I am not a fan of the snow or ice, I still have to say, I cannot wait for the cold. Where are my leather jackets? I am so ready! Debbie Russino South Philadelphia

n Oct. 16, Joan Iaconelli, a former South Philly Review columnist, died at the age of 61 in her home on 15th and Ritner streets. She was a regular contributor to the publication over the years through her column “Slices.” She is survived by her mother Josephine, her brother John, as well as her two children Blase (Danielle) and Joshua (Michele). She was also an aunt and a grandmother. “She was a warm person, and when you saw her you’d think she was 20 years younger than she actually was,” Gene Maiale, her neighbor of 40 years said. He said that she had been suffering from heart and kidney problems, and was found in her home when she was supposed to be picked up for a kidney treatment. The funeral service occurred Monday morning, with her burial occurring at New St. Mary’s Cemetery in Bellmawr, N.J. Donations in her memory can be made to the Women’s Humane Society. -Chris Isaac

he Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office Public Corruption Task Force announced Oct. 16 that it would press charges against six individuals presumably connected to a scheme that netted one supposed plotter the home and car of Dorothy Kennedy, who passed away in her 2800-block-of-South-Marshall-Street home on Aug. 21, 2010. The detained individuals include locals Romanoff Quarles, 43, and Vincent Marciano, 63. The task force initiated its investigation last year following an anonymous tip from a resident who contended someone was attempting to steal property from the estate of the Marconi East resident, who had no relatives or will. The entity’s endeavors, documented in a 21-page report, posit that Quarles, of the 600 block of Johnston Street, looked to acquire the home after learning of Kennedy’s death. To do this, authorities posit, he enlisted attorney Andrew Kaufman, whom they contend used his experience with the Philadelphia Orphans Court and Register of Wills office to orchestrate a scheme that would secure Quarles property and money that should have immediately gone to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The document states that Quarles and Kaufman called on real estate agent Marciano, of the 2600 block of South 15th Street, to set up a sale of the abode to Quarles based on his own determined price. Kennedy also left behind an ’05 Buick LeSabre in the name of husband Francis Kennedy, who died in ’08, and the report notes that Quarles took the automobile, too, and transferred the title to himself. The highly detailed document also mentions three other males whom officials contend also worked to defraud the state, tabbing two with creating a false funeral

bill that Kaufman used for a court filing and one with permitting “a sham sale of the estate’s automobile.” Authorities charged Quarles with criminal conspiracy, theft by deception, receiving stolen property and forgery and Marciano with criminal conspiracy and tampering with public records.

Teller threatened Police are searching for a man who robbed a Newbold bank after threatening a teller Monday. The worker stated that the offender entered the TruMark Financial Credit Union, 1931 S. Broad St., at 8:43 a.m. and approached her with a demand note, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. The paper explained he intended to rob the site, had a gun on him and would kill her if she did not give him $700. The employee, who did not notice any weapon, complied and gave him approximately $400 in various denominations. He then fled the space on foot and headed northbound on Broad Street. She described him as black and between 5-foot-9 and 5-foot-10; having a medium complexion and a thin, slender build; and wearing a mask, a black Nike long-sleeved hoodie, black pants and gloves. To report information, call South Detectives at 215-685-1635, text PPDTIP (773847) or visit phillypolice.com/forms.

Surveillance video

The Philadelphia Police Department is looking for two suspects who burglarized a Grays Ferry car facility. At 8:35 p.m. Oct. 7, surveillance video caught the depicted man entering the fenced parking lot of All City Rental, 1320 S. Warfield St. The footage shows him searching for a vehicle’s keys after spending several minutes breaking into an office trailer. He then used the automobile to ram the security gate open before escaping with an accomplice, whose image the footage did not capture, in a second ride. Authorities later recovered the mode of transportation on the 2500 block of South 58th Street in Southwest Philly. To report information, call South Detectives at 215-685-1635, text PPDTIP (773847) or visit phillypolice.com/forms.

POLICE REPORT Point taken A man intimidated two women with a black revolver in Marconi East last week, scoring cash in the process. At approximately 2:12 a.m. Oct. 12, police responded to a radio call of a robbery on the 2700 block of South Marvine Street, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. The complainants told authorities they had just left a bar in the vicinity of 12th Street and Oregon Avenue when a stranger approached them from behind. Pointing the aforementioned weapon at them, he demanded “Give me what you got, or I will shoot you.” The first complainant reached into her back pocket, Tolliver said, and threw whatever cash she had on her to the ground, grabbed the other female, who had nothing taken, and ran home. The women described the aggressor as white, 5-foot-4 to 5-foot-8, 25-30 years old and cleanshaven; having a thin build; and wearing a dark hoodie and very baggy jeans. To report information, call South Detectives at 215-685-1635, text PPDTIP (773847) or visit phillypolice.com/forms.

Vice bust

Who shot me? A Grays Ferry man suffered a gunshot wound to the head from an unknown figure Sunday. While going to visit a friend on the 1800 block of South Corlies Street at 12:40 a.m., the complainant said he turned into the block’s rear driveway and parked his bicycle next to a green Mitsubishi Galant, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. As he entered his acquaintance’s rear yard, a stranger exited a vehicle, whose description he did not pro-

vide, that was coming down the driveway and began shooting at him. One bullet inflicted a graze wound on the top of his head, Tolliver said, and he fell to the ground, suffering a shoulder injury. He entered a friend’s residence and called authorities, who transported him to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where, as of press time, personnel had him listed in stable condition. A detailed description of the shooter was not available. To report information, call South Detectives at 215-685-1635, text PPDTIP (773847) or visit phillypolice.com/forms.

Don’t dough it! A gun-wielding man robbed a South of South eatery last week. At 7:18 p.m. Oct. 16, the offender entered Omega Pizza, 2145 South St., approached an employee and pointed a small black gun at him, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. The worker placed approximately $500 into a small black bag and watched the thief flee on foot, last catching sight of him going westbound on the 2200 block of South Street. He described the at-large figure as black and 6-foot-2; having a thin build and light eyes; wearing a black hoodie, pants and gloves and a brown face mask; and armed with a black firearm. To report information, call South Detectives at 215-685-1635, text PPDTIP (773847) or visit phillypolice.com/forms.

Crash course A man attempting to fend off a gun-toting individual crashed into a light pole in Grays Ferry Friday. Authorities responded at 9 p.m. to a call of gunshots on the highway at 26th and Manton streets and observed that a gray Mazda sedan had crashed into the pole on the northeast corner of the intersection, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. The vehicle’s owner told them that when his ride was idle, an unknown male put a black gun through the back passenger side window. The complainant attempted to grab the weapon and put his foot on the gas. The acceleration led to his crashing into the pole, an incident that caused a minor cut to his right hand and that inflicted heavy front end damage to the automobile, Tolliver said. Authorities observed a strike mark on the passenger side’s hood but could not provide a description of the shooter. To report information, call South Detectives at 215-685-1635, text PPDTIP (773847) or visit phillypolice.com /forms. Clarice McGilberry missed the start of the program because she was on vacation, but the Yeadon resident, who is no stranger to keeping fit and eating right, was eager to jump right into the free fitness classes upon her return. She is so excited for the opportunity that she went to every class offered last week, and hopes to continue her pace. “I couldn’t wait to get back [from vacation] and get into it,” she said. Those are the stories the state senator likes to hear. “I don’t know if I have a word to describe it,” Williams said. “I’m happy people are taking control of their own health because I see the consequences of people not taking control of their health. ... They can achieve the quality of life we want all people, including myself, to achieve.” Second District Councilman Kenyatta Johnson, who has teamed up with Williams for the Grays Ferry locale since it also falls in the former’s district, praised his peer’s efforts. “Quality of life isn’t just about a clean and safe neighborhood,” Johnson said via e-mail. “It’s also a personal dedication towards a healthy lifestyle, which I constantly promote to my constituents. I am proud to join Sen. Williams and spread the word through these events.” And Townsend, who studied ballet at New York’s Benjamin Cardozo High School before moving to the area to earn English and Spanish degrees at Lincoln University, thoroughly enjoys helping people to embark on that newfound healthy lifestyle. “I just love helping people,” the former elementary school teacher said of his reasoning for being a part of this program. “This is what I want to do for the rest of my life — is to help people get them to where they need to be, make them feel confident, make them feel loved and just, you know, beautiful inside.” SPR Comment at southphillyreview.com/news/features.

BAINBRIDGE GREEN continued from page 1 he said. Rubin, with the support of SSHD, QVNA and a dozen area businesses, is kicking off the space’s fundraising and awareness-raising efforts with “Dining & Dancing Under the Stars: A Fundaiser and Kickoff Event for Bainbridge Green” on Tuesday night. There will be a plated sit-down dinner, a beer and food truck festival and loads of support from area businesses. The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society is creating a garden space for the night, too. “Jonathan is the visionary here. [He] is an awesome guy and I was very, very thrilled when he agreed to join the board of QVNA,” Hornstein said. “He’s built a very good relationship with Mike Harris, and we have a fair amount of political juice here which allows us to get the attention of people that fund these kinds of things.” The resident of the 300 block of Queen Street is referring to a Community Design Collaborative grant that they were able to secure for some initial renderings. “They did a really nice study for us and gave us a conceptual design of what Bainbridge Green might be,” Harris said. Next it’s working with Philadelphia-born and internationally renowned OLIN landscape architects. OLIN “will take that design further, to the next phase of the design, and [execute] studies necessary as well as look at the issues of traffic and parking,” Harris added. And there it is: parking and traffic. Will the dreaded “P” word halt and thwart Rubin’s visions? It seems as though everyone leading this charge is fully committed to not threatening parking so as to accommodate the local businesses that thrive along

the Green. “The issue’s going to be finding a design that balances the needs of the residential and businesses and still create a beautiful public amenity,” Harris said, adding “the key to us is finding that balance of parking and improvement to an area that doesn’t necessarily harm the surrounding businesses.” ONCE OLIN TURNS in some plans, they’ll take them to the community and start building dialogues. “The process we’re in is to work with OLIN to develop a number of concepts and schematic plans that can be presented to the civic associations and the residents and the businesses to get their feedback,” Harris said. “It’s a collaborative process where people will have the opportunity to weigh in on what ideas are being kicked around.”

“We all know that we’d like to make it the Rittenhouse Square of Queen Village, but we have lots of stakeholders under our tent, and that includes businesses who need the parking,” Rubin said. “We think we can balance parking with the park. We believe we can make the park bigger and wider and make it a place for people to gather to have great programming.” “Most of our public spaces are very small,” Hornstein said of QV’s existent green spots. “Mario Lanza [Park, Second and Catharine streets], Weccacoe [405-25 Queen St.], they’re very small. [Bainbridge Green] will be a nice place to stroll with some benches and shade – it’s got a lot of potential,” he said and notes that Rubin has created “a large collective buy-in for this vision.” Many nearby businesses have signed on to support next week’s fundraiser: Whole 11 a.m., Yu-Gi-Oh!/Magic/Uno Card Tournament 3:30 p.m., SmART Readers: Art and Literacy Program 4 p.m., Writers Matter: Teen voices from Philadelphia, Israel, and the Palestinian Territories 6:45 p.m. and Richard Blanco reads from “The Prince of Los Cocuyos: A Miami Childhood” 7:30 p.m. Oct. 27; Introduction to Fundraising Planning 10 a.m., Fall Preschool Storytime, Free Online Genealogy Resources 2 p.m., Teen Tuesday 3:30 p.m. and E.O. This is a legacy for the future so everyone’s really helping,” Rubin said. “We want this to be a destination and right now it’s a parking lot that people just drive through. It’s about re-imagining Bainbridge Green because it needs to be re-imagined.” Harris said they’ve already taken a few small steps towards creating interest; they’ve refinished benches, destroyed a wall that was an eyesore and painted all the utility boxes. “We’re doing these little steps to indicate to people that we’re underway with improving the space and to generate interest – bigger things are on the horizon,” Harris said. Rubin didn’t really want to talk timelines, as the process is in its earliest stages. “We’re being very practical and pragmatic about keeping this coalition together,” he said. “We’re going to have to get grants and state money – we’re talking about a significant amount of money. It’s a huge space. To walk from South Third and Bainbridge to South Fifth and Passyunk, it’s a fiveminute walk. It’s a long, long space.” “In an ideal world, we would build in three or four years,” Rubin conceded when prodded. “Our immediate goal right now is to raise awareness and raise money, and we’re doing both of those things with this event.” SPR Contact Staff Writer Bill Chenevert at bchenevert@southphillyreview.com or ext. 117. A South of South resident is reveling in another year of fomenting fear.

enny Tomczak has long adored adopting a different persona for Halloween, deeming the day a delightful occasion for stepping outside of herself. Come Nov. 8, the resident of the 2200 block of Carpenter Street will have enjoyed nearly three dozen identification alterations as an operations manager and chief zombie officer for Eastern State Penitentiary, which is heightening holiday hoopla with its scariest Terror Behind the Walls incarnation. “I love the transformation,” the 40-year-old, who is reveling in her 11th season of quickening pulses and inciting screams, said of participation in the prison-situated experience. “When I have my makeup added, something just happens to my psyche, and I want to terrify.” The South of South inhabitant oversees 49 similar fearfocused individuals within the Fairmount-based facility and calls on her fascination with the macabre and her peers’ proficiency in petrifying to ensure that nobody leaves the grounds minus myriad memories. With four sections to helm, Tomczak regards her responsibilities as not only helpers in maximizing fright but also as boons in establishing camaraderie and kinship. “I find it awesome to be a part of a network of sinister monsters,” she said of connections among her contemporaries. “In many ways, it’s my family.” Along with enhancing her ability to entice patrons to disB AC KG R O U N D P H OTO S

LIFESTYLES play equal amounts of levity and anxiety, employment with Terror Behind the Walls offered Tomczak her first opportunity to be a leader, and with her group’s numbers going from 15 to its current total over the last decade, she has used that increased tally to feel more confident within her professional life, too. “I’m an insurance professional by day and a zombie at night,” she said. “Being at Eastern State, I feel so in tune with how to interact with people because they’re such benevolent employers, and we often give kudos to workers for jobs well done. Praise is free; that’s something that more businesses can become aware of. I know that being involved with the prison has helped me to transfer my skills when I facilitate meetings or manage projects. It’s all very interconnected.” Holding that Halloween has approached the pomp and circumstance of Christmas with its immensely growing popularity, the fright fomenter is approaching 500 evenings of eerie ecstasy within the environs and treats every frightened face, penetrating shriek and quivering body not just as proof of the glory of a gory outing but also of her fortune in being able to make use of her talents in producing terror. “When I joined Eastern State in 2004, I

knew I would want to stay involved and keep appealing to this part of me that loves a good scare,” Tomczak said. “All these years later, it’s even more exciting. I went from landing a coveted position with the nation’s top historic prison to having a greater chance to exchange thoughts and ideas with people who want everyone who goes there never to be able to forget that time among us. Really, how cool is that?” GREATLY APPRECIATIVE FOR Terror Behind the Walls’ team of 14 special effects employees, whom she dubbed “elite elements” of the fall success, the Buffalo native cam claim a creative background, too. Graduating from Buffalo State College with an art education degree, she assisted her home city’s Boys & Girls Clubs as a fine arts program director, considering art as that which tied everything else together. “I envisioned myself as a tottering old lady dispensing all this wisdom about the power of imagination,” Tomczak said of desiring longevity in the field. “The availability of teaching positions was scarce, though, but even though I left that discipline, I knew I’d never leave the artistic world.” Desiring “to see how the other half lived,”

she moved to Seattle in 1998 and entered into the insurance universe, a realm that one could contend represented a complete change in her professional pursuits. “Not altogether,” Tomczak countered, noting the practicality of the art scene in helping her to convey ideas. “With theater training now through Terror Behind the Walls, I can be theatrical in trying to encourage people and bring about change.” Following seven years as a Pacific Northwest denizen, she returned to the East Coast to be closer to her family and found an apartment in the most opportune area, right across the street from Eastern State Penitentiary. Going for her inaugural audition straight from her job, she did not care if she tore her business suit in trying to impress the judges and scored a job with the site’s Tunnel Escape troupe, now known as the Night Watch crew. “Even when they offered me a promotion, I asked if I would still be able to scare because I love doing that,” Tomczak said. “Fortunately, they let me.” A year into her Philadelphia story, she bought a home in South of South with boyfriend Mike, and the two have come to love South Philly’s diversity and vibrancy, with Tomczak concluding that the city possesses some of the most sensitive, car-

ing people whom she has encountered. “Seattle was missing something,” she said. “Philadelphia, though, is fantastic. Plus, I love where I live. It’s the greatest neighborhood in the greatest city on earth.” Though a committed vegetarian, Tomczak gladly refers exiting visitors to South Philly’s top cheesesteak operations in the hopes of drawing business to other establishments, too, such is her love for her turf. When those guests gather inside the 11acre prison, where she filmed a boot campstyle video in August, though, she wants them to digest their date with disquietude and think about feasting on further opportunities to tremble and shout. “Along with the theatrical aspect, I’m just so proud to be involved with Terror Behind the Walls,” Tomczak said. “By being so, I’m helping to continue the discussion of incarceration and prisons in America because the money from sales helps to keep the site operating. It’s great to help one of America’s gems. SPR For tickets, call 215-236-3300, or visit easternstate.org/halloween. Contact Managing Editor Joseph Myers at jmyers@southphillyreview.com or ext. 124. see where Mitt Romney may be gearing up for his third try at the White House. Timely. At a time when the country is mulling the twin threats of ISIS and Ebola, what we really need in 2016 is a glorified hedge manager whose proposed remedies when he ran in ’12 would have left us minus an auto industry and improved health care. Mitt has his finger out the window just to see which way the wind is blowing on the issues. The spread of Ebola is on the minds of a lot folks around here. As one who has been hospitalized twice in the last eight years for bacterial infections, I am not exactly immune to worry. Concern, yes, but realistically you have a much better chance of dying from a bad chicken cutlet. However, that doesn’t mean the CDC has inspired confidence either. We need some candor and competence. Another thing that has us scared in South Philadelphia is the rumor that in the future the Columbus Day Parade will be renamed. Both Seattle and Minneapolis changed the parade to honor indigenous people. Both cities have large Native American populations, unlike Philadelphia. Let’s face it, there are good reasons to stop honoring Columbus. He really needed a GPS. Thought he discovered India. “Discovered” a country already discovered by Leif Erickson. Mostly repaid the friendly natives he encountered by enslaving or murdering them. Within two years of the arrival of Columbus, half the native population was dead. We Italian-Americans don’t need Christopher Columbus to honor; we’ve got lots of other paisanos who have made America a better place. Rename the parade what it really stands for — ethnic pride. How about Italian-American Day? It seems as if that’s what other ethnic groups do in Philly. Rumor has it that once the ethnic parades have all finished, Channel 6 will have two hours of dead air on Sunday afternoons. What did Columbus know about roast pork with long hots and a slice of provolone? I’ve got a problem with the School Reform Commission and Bill Green. They apparently subscribe to the Chris Christie theory that all we have to do to balance the school budget is to bleed the teachers a little more. After all, what do these teachers really do besides teach our kids? Is that as important as managing a hedge fund or being the CEO for a carbonated beverage company? And teachers get summers off. Wouldn’t we all kill for the opportunity to supplement our incomes

■ s o u t h p h i l l y r e v i e w.c o m

by bartending down the shore, or better yet, selling salt water taffy? What ingrates. See here’s how it works. You whiny teachers negotiate a compensation contract in good faith with us. You accept less money in salary in return for good medical benefits. We don’t worry about budgeting for the cost of the contracts, but keep kicking the can down the road to future politicians. Inevitably, when we get into financial trouble, we expect you and the parents in the home and school associations to buy luxuries such as pencils and paper. If that doesn’t work, we just cancel our contract with you unilaterally and blame you for being selfish spoiled sports. And when the next contracts come up, we expect you to believe that we won’t cancel whatever benefits you negotiated the next time we get into trouble. Then we wind up complaining when our schools end up becoming holding cells for kids who couldn’t pass a typical citizenship test. We impose a tax on cigarettes that depends on folks increasing their smoking habits in order to provide revenue for the schools. That’s not a School “Reform” Commission; it’s a School “Destruction” Commission. I don’t know about you, but I spent some sleepless nights worrying about where Kim Jong Un of North Korea had disappeared. In an undated photo, Kim was recently spotted walking with a cane and reading Dennis Rodman’s biography. Kim refuses to talk about his goal of destroying the United States, but would be happy to comment on LeBron James’ returning to Cleveland. Giant stores reversed themselves on their recent policy of removing the USDA grades from the meat they sell. In place of grades such as “choice” or “select,” Giant began labeling all its meats as “USDA Graded,” which is about as meaningful as saying “at least this meat was inspected.” As you might expect, there were complaints from customers who thought even calling this stuff “choice” and “select” was a helluva stretch. Which reminds me, there used to be a van that pulled up in front of the old Quartermaster Depot at 20th and Johnston streets selling meat out the back. Who cared about the labeling when the price for the filet mignon was phenomenal? After Giant received a ton of complaints, it decided to go back to putting the grade of the meat back on the package. Why did anyone ever change the packaging in the first place? Maybe Giant figured that the guys selling meat out of the van were doing so well, grading information was of no interest to their patrons. What Giant didn’t figure on is the uniqueness of our area. In these parts, many things sell better out of the back of a van. The Vatican has issued a kinder and gentler statement on tolerating gay Catholics. Ladies — your turn is coming. SPR Comment at southphillyreview.com/opinion/ cardella.

Measuring ‘Birdman’s’ wings

Life has become a quest for creative redemption for Riggan Thomson (Michael Keaton), who achieved stardom playing a superhero.

■ By R. Kurt Osenlund Movie Reviewer

W

ith “Birdman,” there is, of course, a bit of meta irony going on, considering that lead character Riggan Thomson, a former Hollywood star of superhero flicks now inching toward a comeback, is played by Michael Keaton, the former star of Batman flicks whose comeback is in full swing thanks to this movie. But just as that fun fact is amusing for all of two minutes, “Birdman” is a pristinely made wellspring of shallow ideas, which fleetingly hold your interest but have no lasting weight or insight. Taking his first crack at dark comedy, “Babel” director Alejandro González Iñárritu attempts to make a media-biz satire while simultaneously crafting a semiautobiographical piece about the woes of inflated egos. Despite the resplendent efforts of a grand ensemble cast (which also includes Naomi Watts, Edward Norton, Emma Stone and Andrea Riseborough), and the technical virtuosity of cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki (whose camera snakes its way through spaces with nearseamless fluidity), Iñárritu comes up pitifully short in his pursuits. It’s conceivable that his own ego blinded him to his weakness as a satirist. Reflecting the glut of movie stars now gracing Broadway marquees, washed-up Riggan is trying to take the high-brow road to overcoming his past, which is globally known for his portrayal of the film’s fictional title character. He’s writing, directing and starring in a stage adaptation of a Raymond Carver story, but his epic self-obsession may derail the entire production. Iñárritu’s exploration of the theater world is fascinating, but dozens of backstage dramas — like “All That Jazz”— have done it better, largely

because they had something novel and substantial to say. With excessive faux prestige and cinematic bells and whistles, “Birdman” simply regurgitates the notions that art is good, commerce is bad, stars are megalomaniacs, men are pigs, viewers are gullible, social media is all-powerful and we’re all useless in the grand scheme. That brilliant, well-shot actors are the regurgitators doesn’t change the sense the meat of “Birdman” is vexingly lean. Penned by four screenwriters, including Iñárritu, the script for this supposed Oscar vehicle adds up to a whole lot of squawking.

The main attraction to this adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s novel about a redneck necrophile is that it’s directed by James Franco. But Franco’s a modestly gifted filmmaker at best — too busy dipping his toes in every medium (including social media) to crank out a decent film. See “Child of God” for the star performance from Scott Haze, who’s an astonishing, feral revelation. All’s fare The hoedown lowdown

Chrissie’s Meatloaf

Y

ou look at the iPhone weather app — not that it’s guaranteed to be right — and notice there is a chance of rain in the forecast for twostraight nights. Suddenly, the idea of grilling up freshly patted hamburgers on the barbecue one last time before colder air arrives doesn’t sound so appealing. The great thing about ground meat is that this beefy item isn’t limited to just usage. Christina Pullo, of the 2500 block of South 10th Street, makes it stand out in her Meatloaf recipe. For those who can’t get the barbecue flavoring out of their minds, the local resident revives that summertime mood by tossing some sauce into the mix. There is no need to start singing the blues just yet. SPR

INGREDIENTS:

F

leisher Art Memorial, 719 Catharine St., will hold Friday Night Bites from 6 to 9 p.m. tomorrow. The Bella Vista site’s free parking lot-situated harvest hoedown will feature The Citywide Specials playing bluegrass delights and The Flying Deutschman offering German fare from its food truck. Families can also enjoy dancing, as well as gourd and pumpkin decorating. Call Dominic Mercier, 215-922-3456, or visit fleisher. org for more information. SPR

DIRECTIONS:

1-1/2 pounds ground meatloaf mix 2 tablespoons of ketchup 2 tablespoons of barbecue sauce 1 small onion, chopped 3 eggs 2 cups of seasoned breadcrumbs 1 teaspoon each of salt and pepper

In an 8-inch square pan, mix all of the ingredients, starting with the oil. Mold the meat into a rectangular shape in the pan. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Cook for about 90 minutes.

The wontons were handmade with light silky wrappers and filled with pork. I pulled the slender noodles apart with my chopsticks for easy eating. Bean sprouts and thinly sliced scallions floated in the broth. Every time I dine in a Vietnamese restaurant, many patrons are eating pho. n a cold winter’s day about a year ago, I began to do some research on the number of Vietnamese restaurants in Philadelphia. Chinatown has a few that I enjoy, but South Philly is the place for me when I hunger for a bowl of pho or a few appetizers that comprise a meal. I came upon Viet Huong on Washington Avenue and immediately set out to try it. I was not very hungry, but a bowl of pho would constitute a satisfying early dinner. I ordered the beef ball noodle soup ($7.50). A large, deep bowl was filled with rich broth, tender tasty meatballs and long thin noodles. As is the custom, a platter of fresh fragrant basil, mint leaves, bean sprouts and a wedge of lime arrived with it. The flavors were spot on, but I thought the broth could have been hotter. Crispy spring rolls ($3.50) were tasty and not a bit greasy. I made a note to return to the restaurant for a review. Viet Huong is adjacent to a small Vietnamese market where I found hot sausages for sale. A man seated us at a roomy booth and brought us a complimentary pot of hot tea. Customers help themselves to chopsticks, soup spoons and hot sauce from the caddy on the table. There are 288 items on the menu, not including several family style dinners. The front of the menu consists of color photographs of many items, but our knowledgeable waiter advised us to pay close attention to the rest of the menu that included descriptions of each item. We began dinner with summer rolls

($3.50), one of my favorite starters. We received two plump rolls filled with shrimp, pork, basil and cool vermicelli noodles. Sometimes these rolls are overfilled with too many noodles, but the balance here was just right. A small dish of peanut dipping sauce came with the rolls. Diners can also order summer rolls filled with chicken. Shredded pork rolls ($3.50) were prepared with tasty, tender barbecued pork and vegetables. What I enjoy about Vietnamese food is the even keel use of sweet and spicy (does not mean hot). The dipping sauce that came with the pork rolls was a good example of this practice. Since I wanted a big bowl of soup for my entrée, I searched the menu for one more appetizer or salad. Unfortunately, our waiter told us the cold raw beef salad — a hallmark of Vietnamese cuisine — was not available. I came across fried potato shrimp cupcakes ($5.95), a dish I had never tried. A mix of minced potatoes and shrimp was formed into cupcakes, coated with crumbs and deep fried. They were served with green leaf lettuce, basil, mint leaves, bean sprouts and the sweet and spicy dipping sauce I enjoyed with the pork rolls. I thought the potato shrimp mixture was a little dry, but the sauce added a bit of moisture. I also liked the pickled carrot and turnip sticks that were included on the plate. Since I tried the pho on my earlier visit, I was intrigued about Viet Huong’s wonton noodle soup ($7.25). This is, hands down, one of my favorite soups in the world. It

Bank teller used to cash checks for a couple of customers who were opening up an Old City luncheonette, and she went to try the place out. Upon entering, she noticed Drake’s Cakes sitting on the counter. Suddenly, the at-home baker found herself offering up her services. “I said to the girls, ‘would you like a homemade cake?,’” Bratt said of the early 1990’s encounter. When they accepted the offer, the Northeast Philadelphia resident went home and made a Jewish apple cake. That led to converting her garage into an at-home bakery complete with commercial equipment. While making a delivery on South Street, she noticed a vacancy at 510 S. Fifth St. She called about the space on a Thursday, and had a handshake agreement in place two days later. Her brother Bob

Some rabbis had requested the change, which included being closed on the Jewish Sabbath and holidays, as well as following certain techniques in the kitchen. When the Great Recession hit, the owner found herself at a crossroads — “close my doors or become kosher.” It turns out the transition has been very successful, with her challahs, Jewish apple cake and cupcakes being some of the more popular items. ate a very homey environment. “I love to take the kids for a tour of the bakery,” she said. For those who can’t make it in, Bratt is sharing her very seasonable, and very easy to make Pumpkin Bread. “A good friend of mine had given me the recipe many, many years ago,” she said. “It’s a super tasty recipe.”

INGREDIENTS: 3 cups of all-purpose flour 2 cups of sugar 2 teaspoons of baking soda 1 teaspoon each of cloves, nutmeg and cinnamon 1 teaspoon of salt 1/2 teaspoons of baking powder 2 cups of pure pumpkin (16

ounces) 2/3 cup of vegetable oil 3 eggs

DIRECTIONS: Mix all of the dry ingredients together. Add the pumpkin, oil and eggs. Mix just until blended; do not overmix (chocolate chips can be added if desired). Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 9-by-5-inch loaf pan. Pour the mixture into the pan. Bake for one hour or until toothpick comes out cleanly. The recipe can also be converted to muffins or cupcakes, using a cupcake or muffin pan. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes. SPR Comment at southphillyreview.com/ food-and-drink/features.

Here’s what people are saying about us: They fixed everything, they had open communication and the personnel were really nice. - Sarah R., June 18, 2014 I arrived at Schafer’s needing a routine oil change, but I also needed my front driver side blinker repaired and asked them to look into why my check gas cap message was coming up. The oil change took about 20 minutes and then they began looking into the blinker. What I thought was just a bulb out was actually a fuse issue, so I’m glad I didn’t try to fix it myself. They were thorough in determining the exact issue and were able to fix the problem. Great cost, no BS and stuck to my time schedule. Couldn’t ask for anything more! - Astrid S., June 9, 2014 *for most cars

And now, the end is here And so I face the final curtain I’ve lived a life that’s full I traveled each and ev’ry highway And more, much more than this, I did it my way Regrets, I’ve had a few But then again, too few to mention I planned each charted course, each careful step along the byway And more, much more than this, I did it my way Yes, there were times, I’m sure you knew When I bit off more than I could chew But through it all, when there was doubt I ate it up and spit it out I faced it al and I stood tall and did it my way I’ve loved, I’ve laughed and cried I’ve had my fill, my share of losing And now, as tears subside, I find it all so amusing To think I did all that And may I say, not in a shy way “Oh no, no, oh, no, not me, I did it my way” For what is a man what has he got? If not himself, then he has naught To say the things he truly feels and not the words of one who kneels The record shows I took the blows and did it my way!

A powerful combination

With his ill daughter watching, a heavyweight scored a technical decision win at a Whitman site. ■ By Joseph Myers Review Managing Editor

S

teve Cunningham has faced many daunting days in his life, especially since daughter Kennedy entered the world Sept. 6, 2005 with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, a congenital heart defect that has left her requiring a transplant. Because of his natural resolve and strength from his little girl, the pugilist certainly fostered no fear when facing Natu Visinia, who possessed a 73-pound advantage over him, Saturday night at the 2300 Arena, 2300 S. Swanson St. Using the unfailing combination of talent and love, the heavyweight scored a technical decision victory, with Kennedy cheering for her patriarch. “I always feel I have to prove myself,” the 38-year-old said during Oct. 16’s press event at The Holiday Inn Philadelphia, 900 Packer Ave. “What I never fail to see is that I can do all things through Christ. That’s how I operate.” Sounding like a metaphorical doctor, Cunningham hopes he and wife Livvy will soon learn from an actual physician that Kennedy can receive a new organ. The youth also attended last week’s media gathering, with Cunningham’s trainer, Brother Naazim Richardson, noting “Kennedy is who Steve wants to be when he grows up.” “She definitely gives me extra energy,” the fawning father said of the sister to Steve Jr. and Cruz. “I’ve grown as a child of God, and I’ve come to understand so much of who I am. That means realizing who I have to be as an emotional and financial supporter.” For the first aspect of that description, Cunningham, who moved to Pittsburgh with his boys following his triumph, had been keeping in contact with Livvy and Kennedy at their Steel City abode. The females relocated from Philadelphia because a Pittsburgh hospital placed the 9-year-old on a transplant waiting list in June, with any cross-state trip posing problems, as every second would count in executing a surgical procedure. On the latter front, he and his management team reached an

August agreement with the Visinia camp, giving Cunningham a second consecutive chance to fight in Philadelphia, the other occasion being April 4’s Liacouras Center brawl with Amir Mansour. He downed the then-undefeated foe via a unanimous decision in what many experts have tabbed a candidate for Fight of the Year. He claimed the United States Boxing Association heavyweight title that spring evening and thanked Mansour for his televised postcontest mention of Kennedy’s plight, a gesture that spawned heartbyfaith.com. As of press time, the website had generated $29,146, far exceeding the Cunningham clan’s $25,000 goal to secure funds to complement the family’s health insurance coverage. “That was huge of Mansour to announce our struggles,” Cunningham said of his adversary, who, like so many of his opponents, has actually become an ally. “That should show people that this sport isn’t as

evil as many presume. My boxing career has mainly been about relationships. I don’t really know Natu, but no matter what happens in the ring, I’d like to keep in contact. We’re part of a fraternity.” DEPENDING ON ONE’S source, Cunningham entered the bout as a slight favorite or a marginal underdog. Definitely the more experienced combatant, the two-time International Boxing Federation cruiserweight belt holder set foot in the Whitman facility with a 27-6 mark, a ledger that includes tussles across the country and duels in South Africa, Poland and Germany. The 30-year-old Visinia, though, ventured to the venue with an immaculate 10-0 slate, including eight knockouts, and despite being a “big fan” of Cunningham, he wanted to conquer him. “I’m hungry for a breakout,” the 278-pound thumper said. “Steve has been eating from a good menu for many years,

PRO SPORTS at southphillyreview.com/blogs.php and I’m ready for my turn.” Through NBC SportsNet’s “Fight Night” series, the two came together for a figurative feast, with Cunningham hoping he could notch a win for the established guard and his 6-foot-5 antagonist yearning for youth to prove more potent. The older brawler gained an early edge in the scheduled 10-round affair, making most of the initial three segments a display of his excellent timing and footwork. Visinia ended the third with a powerful right hook and seemed to seize the momentum two rounds later when referee Gary Rosato ruled a knockdown off what appeared to be a slip by Cunningham following a shoulder shot. “He’s a heavy hitter,” Cunningham told The Ring Magazine. “The knockdown, I was off balance, but it was the force behind his punches. Give him his due.” The local product started to stun Visinia again in the sixth, a huge right-handed blow doing the trick, and applied more punishment to his fading foe in what turned out to be the final frame. With his bride and progeny cheering him on, Cunningham, who had labeled Visinia “a force” two days earlier, repelled the younger man and guaranteed that the familial bond his brood has formed will continue to include celebrations of athletic ascendancy. “I’m going into this fight as a man, who through his time in the Navy, knows how to follow through with a mission,” Cunningham said Oct. 16 of his preparation. “I definitely want to give my fans something to cherish, and I definitely want to continue to make my family proud.” Both tasks accomplished, he will patiently wait for the life-changing call for his little girl and will strive to help her to counter perceptions of what one can do in the face of extreme circumstances. Having beaten harrowing odds himself from his days as a teen drug dealer, the highly religious figure can certainly preach what he has practiced. “We live small and smart,” Cunningham said. “We’re in this together, and I’m thankful for my daughter. I know, in my heart, she’ll be OK.” SPR Visit heartbyfaith.com. Contact Managing Editor Joseph Myers at jmyers@southphillyreview.com or ext. 124. Comment at southphillyreview.com/sports/features.
