The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB) has awarded its fifth and final Category 2 license (up to 5,000 slot machines and 250 table games) to Stadium Casino, LLP, a joint venture between Greenwood Gaming ■ “An Esat Passyunk Crossing & Entertainment, LP and the Cordish Companies. well as the Xfinity Live! Philadelphia entertainment complex, 1100 Pattison Ave. The casino’s address will be 900 Packer Ave. The license is the 13th with 12 casinos in operation: six Category 1 licenses for horse racetracks, four Category 2 licenses for stand-alone casinos and two Category 3 casinos located in existing resorts in operation. The four Category 2 licenses are running in Bensalem (Parx Casino), King of Prussia (Valley Forge Casino), Chester (Harrah’s) and of course Fishtown (SugarHouse). The license comes “under the Pennsylvania Race Horse Development and Gaming Act, which further stipulated that this facility must be located in Philadelphia,”

To the Editor: After that meeting last Wednesday called together by the Stadium District powers that be, I have some thoughts and a real concern to those who live close to Darien Street and Packer Avenue. I agree that all of South Philadelphia should stick together and nothing should go into a neighborhood that the residents do not want. And, yes, our elected officials know they work for us, especially those officials who are now under attack. However, casino hearings were held more than once at the Convention Center last year, and the turnout was minimal even though at the time three locations between Front Street and 10th at Packer/ Pattison were possible locations. There was even a deadline to file an intervention! This fight just may be fruitless for the mere fact the real opposition should have been filed in the courts when the final locations were announced and not a week before the announcement of the decision. An intervention should have been filed, as it was for the

Spread blame or stick together? [Bart] Blatstein project, it never was. Now, it will be even more costly to fight this. With all the finger pointing going on, the fact is the elected officials were not even invited to the meeting. Even criminals are allowed to face their accusers. Perhaps the wrong phone numbers were passed around at the meeting. Was the process of who makes the decision explained to the residents? Were they told about last year’s hearings? Were they told the local elected officials do not make the decision? Were they told it is the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board? Were they given statistics of the impact SugarHouse had in Fishtown on crime and other factors? Were they given any information that benefits or harms them, or was it kept from them until it could be used for someone’s agenda and a possible run for office? How many meetings did the leaders of the Stadium District hold to explain all of this? Did anyone stop to think that the likely winner in this, Live!, is part of Xfinity Live! and that the owners, Comcast-Spectacor, are part of the Stadium District? Why was

the big opposition meeting now and not months ago when it mattered? There are at least one or two people who supposedly have their fingers on the button down there. Were their eyes closed or did they strategically plan it for now when the election for City Council is only months away? If this does happen, the impact of the casino will mostly affect the residents closest to Ninth Street and Packer Avenue going east and west, on the east side of Broad. There should be a separate entity to be the liaison between the community and the casino, not the Stadium District. The casino is a whole other venue, separate from the sports teams. It will have different hours of operation, and will not draw the traffic a football game or a concert does. Do you really want those who sit on the district board to police their own venue? Should they control any monies for those residents like they control the money that could have been used for the intervention? Our area suffers indirectly from the stadiums, too, by fans parking in our neighborhood, trash, traffic on Oregon Avenue and so on but after much lobbying from our civic group, State Rep. Bobby Donatucci and others, we were shut out of the Stadium District. So much for all of South Philly stick-

ing together! I would be the first to scream from the rooftops when an elected official has wronged our or any community; this was not the case in this situation. Before putting them on a cross, get the real facts. I can appreciate everyone’s concern, frustration and even confusion, but look at the big picture! Elected officials do listen to big issues, but no one took real action until now. I do not think it is everyone on that board, and most likely they were directed by someone they trusted to take the lead. Perhaps the real “enemy” is the one within. Perhaps the real “enemy” is one who is ready to blame every single person they know for a defeat that was their own doing. Sticking together in this situation is to make sure those who may suffer have the best support they deserve. I can bet that the elected officials in South Philly will be there for them and do the right thing. South Philly is the best place in the world, and it is up to us to protect one and other first and not put self-serving agendas before our families, our friends and our community. But beware of rainmakers. Jody Della Barba President Girard Estate Area Residents

As reported in the Nov. 13 South Philly Review as “Monetary mischief,” a male since identified as Antwan Burgess, entered Lids Cafe, 2243 Tasker St., at 12:50 a.m. Oct. 20, casing the establishment for nearly 20 minutes before departing, only to return a short time later. Police arrested three men for allegedly assaulting two men in Passyunk Square. While smoking a cigarette with friends outside Boot & Saddle, 1131 S. Broad St., at 2 a.m. Nov. 12, the first complainant encountered a stranger, who snatched her purse, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. During the ensuing struggle, the woman said she suffered a punch to the face, with the supposed of offender running eastbound on Ellsworth Street. She caught up with the figure and received additional blows to her face and head as he tried to enter a vehicle. The second offender exited the automobile, delivered even more hits and slammed a door on the woman’s arms, Tolliver said. The other complainant attempted to help the victim, but the reported accomplice punched her ribs several times. Gaining control of the purse, the alleged aggressors fled as passengers in a black Chevrolet. At 2:56 a.m., authorities observed the supposed vehicle and initiated a felony car stop at 55th Street and Woodland Avenue in Southwest Philly. They detained two individuals, whom the women identified as their attackers, Tolliver said. Law enforcement agents made contact with the vehicle operator, whom they later identified as the third offender. He produced his wallet when they asked if he possessed a valid driver’s license, and police observed that it contained the first complainant’s bank credit card. Authorities had the 2013 Chevrolet Impala transported to its tow yard for holding as they waited for a search warrant. Executing the warrant, they discovered evidence relating to the crime in the vehicle and charged 36-year-old Quatay Spriggs, of the 1200 block of South Bernard Street, 26-year-old Joyal Parker, of the 700 block of South 18th Street, and 28-year-old Rasheen Brawner, of the 700 block of South 19th Street, with criminal conspiracy, theft, robbery, recklessly endangering another person and assault. They await a Dec. 2 preliminary hearing, and were still being held on $35,000 bail of press time.

Walking westbound on the 1800 block of McKean Street at 9:35 p.m. Nov. 5, the complainants encountered two figures on bicycles, with the lead individual announcing “Hey, fellas, give it up,” Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. He then lifted his shirt to show them the butt of a gun in his waistband. The first victim handed over his cell phone and wallet to the gun toter, and the second complainant gave the same items to the accomplice before the offenders fled along McKean Street. Police are looking for a man who assaulted a fast food employee in Grays Ferry. At 11 p.m. Nov. 3, the sought individual and a female companion were eating at McDonald’s, 2851 Grays Ferry Ave., when a worker told them the dining area was closed and that they would have to leave. Becoming upset, the man started to argue with employees, following one outside of the establishment. When the accosted figure attempted to walk away, the suspect stabbed him in the back before chasing him through the parking lot. The injured employee received transport to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania for his injuries. To report information, call South Detectives Det. In Memoriam: Remembering Mark Romano

the end, he was dealt an undeserving blow to his always upbeat personality: His body was shutting down as he was in desperate need of a liver transplant. Instead of seeing our smiling friend sitting in his corner of the advertising department, we were getting daily updates from the family about his medical condition. Spending his weeks in and out of the hospital, Mark was forced into an early retirement. The family was in the prayers of every South Philly Review staff member. Sure there were times when he was ready to give up the fight, but an angel from above was looking over him. Sure enough, that gift of life — a liver transplant — came his way. The day he exited rehab, his first stop was visiting his old friends at the South Philly Review, where he made many connections, business and personal, over a 29-year stint. It seemed as if his new lease on life was golden as he made occasional visits to see his old friends. The most recent conversation took place on Nov. 14, so it seemed as if everything was still going fine. But on Monday morning, that unexpected call came from the family, that Mark Romano passed away. He left us way too early in life, but those who knew him well, are well aware that he his smiling down on all of us. SPR

“W

hat????” That seems to be the common response this week. There is never a good time to receive news about an unexpected passing, but a Monday morning phone call sent shock waves through the Review Publishing family. Mark Romano, a former co-worker, friend, brother and even mentor to some passed away Monday morning at age 60. He was one of the main cogs to the South Philly Review advertising department, serving as both a department manager and account executive. Mark was one of those “nice” guys every office needs. He was always there to lend a helping hand, make someone laugh. He seemed to pour his heart and soul into his time at the Review — his home away from home. Nobody knew him better then Review Publishing COO John Gallo. Mark instantly took John under his wings from the day they met in 1985, and they became like brothers. “Mark was one of the few people that no one ever had a bad thing to say about,” Gallo said. “His love of life, his upbeat personality, and friendship to me, personally, will never be forgotten. Mark was truly a great human being.” Of course life wasn’t always easy for Mark, and towards

It was a rare occasion in which Mark Romano, who was always upbeat, wasn’t smiling.

Condolences “I am so devastated by this news (“Remembering Mark Romano,” Nov. 17). Mark and his family really put up a fight and I am so sad that it has been so tough even after the transplant. My condolences go out to Debbie and the rest of his family and friends. Mark truly was a wonderful man and even in the short time I knew him he always remained dear to me.” Anonymous via southphillyreview.com

“I’m so very sorry to hear of Mark’s passing. Although I haven’t seen or spoken to him in many years, when I heard the news I immediately broke down and felt a huge amount of grief. Mark was always an honest heartfelt kinda guy and I really liked that about him. I’m lucky to have worked with him for many years at the Review. A true stand-up guy. RIP Mark. xo” Diana Neary Delorenzo viasouthphillyreview.com

“My deepest sympathy goes out to Mark’s family and friends. Joan and Vicki, I wish I could give you both a kiss and hug. I have the fondest memories of Mark growing up on Orkney Street. He always was a class act even as a young kid. RIP Mark.” Karen Monteleone via southphillyreview.com

“When my mom first started at the Review, and the first people we met were Mark and Debbie. What nice people they were. Mark always had a smile on his face and always [was] in a good mood!!! A nicer person is NOT on this earth!!!” Mario Difebbo via southphillyreview.com

A viewing for Mark Romano is being held 6 to 9 p.m. tonight at Vincent Gangemi Funeral Home, 2234-40 S.Broad St. Comment features.

CASINO continued from page 1 vania,” PGCB Chariman William H. Ryan, Jr. said. The decision was unanimous, with seven board members voting for the Packer Avenue location at a Pennsylvania Convention Center-situated special meeting Tuesday afternoon. The Wednesday prior witnessed a packed Stella Maris basement at South Ninth and Bigler streets with a resounding chorus of opposition to the rumor that the license was likely going to Live! “The meeting’s sign-in sheets reflect the following: total who did sign in was 679, with 90 percent opposed to local casino, 8 percent for a local casino and 2 percent blank,” wrote Barbara Capozzi, the Director of District II for the SCSSD, who led the meeting. “A casino so close to what is already the organized chaos of multiple entertainment venues, so close to a beautiful Mastery elementary and middle school campus, so close to a church and rectory, so close to many, many seniors homes, will be a deplorable burden on too many just so that an already wealthy few can make more money,” she added. There was a lot of booing, and a handful of different perspectives were offered when the floor was opened up for comment. Many feel that City leadership hasn’t stepped in to help their cries of discontent be heard. But 2nd District Councilman Kenyatta Johnson issued a statement that contradicts some outrage and hints that all the outcry is too little, too late. “Last week’s meeting at Stella Marris was the first community meeting in the over two-year process which sent the message that there are some grave concerns about the project. o matter how many lumps or lean periods she endures, Corinna Burns always tabs the rewards of acting as far more powerful than its risks. As Eliza in “The (curious case of the) Watson Intelligence,” the resolute 42-yearold is enjoying art’s imitation of life, portraying a character who must decide if she is willing to conquer fear and anxiety to understand love. “She’s a down-to-earth straight shooter, which means she’s prone to vulnerability, too,” the resident of the 500 block of Fernon Street said of her role in the Pulitzer Prizenominated work. “She’s a great study when comprehending what the play says about human interaction.” The Dickinson Square West dweller is tackling her task through Sunday at the Off-Broad Street Theatre. The endeavor marks her fourth project for Azuka Theatre, and she is address-

ing technology’s influence on reality through East Passyunk Crossingbased director Allison Heishman and opposite Queen Village-situated lead Griffin Stanton-Ameisen. “Technology stands as a safe substitute with the benefits of connection and no risks,” Burns said of the three versions of Eliza, including “an artificial intelligence superstar.” “Is she capable of putting that aside and being bare? That’s her challenge.” Covering four time periods and venturing to six locations, Madeleine George’s brainchild finds the local actress reuniting with Stanton-Ameisen, for whom she played Banquo in last month’s Revolution Shakespeare staging of “Macbeth” at Hawthorne Park, 12th and Catharine streets. A “Watson Intelligence” press release includes Heishman’s assertion that the three-person creation, with former Queen Village resident David Bardeen as Merrick, offers characters who “are desperately trying to connect with one another and communicate with the world at large. We see them succeed and fail time and time again and hopefully in watching their struggles learn more about ourselves.” That stance corresponds with Burns’ belief that the local theater scene consists of individuals who

The enThused presence first fell for theater as a California, Pa. resident, finding the discipline a supreme source of “active witnessing” and “emotional sharing.” She explored directing and acting as a Swarthmore College registrant, with the former helping her to take a broader look at theater presentations as puzzles to assemble. The discipline, which afforded her experience through the now-defunct Brick Playhouse, formerly 623 South St., eventually yielded to acting, with Burns, lacking a “self-objectifying confidence,” feeling she could contribute however needed to any number of entities. “With Philadelphia, it’s been more circumstantial for me,” she said of her local employment record, which includes landing roles for large and small outfits, notably Arden Theatre, Inis Nua and Pig Iron Theatre companies and Theatre Exile, 1340 S. 13th St. “People in this profession are always debating which parts to go af af-

ter, and they often consider how much they can continue to give of themselves to fulfill their dreams.” Fortunately for local audiences, selftalks consistently leave her feeling her course will continue to counter any doubts that patrons might have about theater’s future. Especially fond of new plays, Burns contends that Philadelphia abounds in professionals who just want to create and contribute and that their ef efforts forge works that rival and often eclipse New York-situated productions. “There’s a generosity of spirit here,” Burns, who has resided in Dickinson Square West since 2000, said of her area existence, adding that great friendships stand out among the factors that influence her affinity for South Philly. “When you’re in Philly, there’s a good chance that if you meet someone and have ideas, you’ll be able to put on a project together.” While the collaborative process will always prove provocative, Burns gained a sense of individual glory during June’s SoLow Fest. “Internet Stalker,” a “very autobiographical piece” concerning family circumstances, appealed to her interest in creative nonfiction and could find placement in journals, as she is planning to give it a greater identity. Deeming writing “a

compelling interest,” she foresees conceiving additional studies and is nurturing a return to directing now that she considers herself a “more organized human being” than she was years ago. Before exploring those matters, she is determined to make the final “Watson Intelligence” shows af affirmations of the strong talent that Philadelphia’s females possess. “There is never enough work for women, but I’m thrilled to have this opportunity, especially under Allison’s guidance,” Burns said. She deems herself fortunate to have multiple projects to anticipate, as February will find her in Inis Nua’s “Long Live the Little Knife” and May will present her one-woman turn in Plays & Players Theatre’s staging of Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Tony Kushner’s “Homebody.” “It’s an exciting time,” Burns said. “There’s so much potential out there, and I’m looking forward to taking a few more risks.” SPR For tickets, call 215-563-1100, or visit azukatheatre.org. Supporting schools

C

ongratulations! Philadelphia public schools made national news last week because of the unique budget restraints under which teachers have been forced to work. According to slate. com, the yearly school budget for books and supplies for our public schools is (drumroll, please!) $160. That’s books AND supplies. Is there budgetary trickery here, you ask? The “trickery” (perhaps “shame” is a more appropriate word) is that the low figure (you can’t buy five paperbacks, a ream of paper and a few pencils and pens for that price even in Staples) presupposes that teachers will pick up the difference out of their own pockets. Are we Philadelphians outraged by yet another example of shortchanging our children? The answer is “yes” if it’s your children, and “no” if it’s the other folks’ children. Yes, we ousted the incumbent Gov. Tom Corbett in the recent election (the odds against that happening if one uses historical fact were roughly equivalent to any Kardashian staying married for life), but in this city having a “D” next to your name on the ballot is pretty much the only qualification you need to get our collective vote. In fact, two-thirds of us stayed home on Election Day, and the folks working the polls thought, based on their own experience, the turnout wasn’t half bad. The dirty little truth is most of us don’t care about Philadelphia’s public school kids if they happen not to be in our extended family. The crowds protesting the skin-flint way our politicians deal with our public schools are mostly composed of teachers, students and their parents. Too many of the rest of us are like some of the folks who write to this newspaper or call the local talk shows complaining that teachers have it too easy. Our outrage is reserved for the fact that teachers don’t want to give back their benefits to help balance our budget. I love it when working class folks holler that if they’re getting screwed by their employer, why not screw the teachers, too? That’s what we call real “class solidarity” in 21st century America. I think screwing the other worker is inscribed in the plank of the Grand Old Party. The same Slate online article mentions that there is funding help on the way. And, of course, we will have a new governor come January, though in the “wisdom” of the electorate, we have surrounded him with the mossy remains of that other party

n s o u t h p h i l l y r e v i e w.c o m

that is responsible in the first place for the credo “Frackers first — Teachers last.” In Pennsylvania, our lottery proceeds go toward benefiting senior programs — at least 27% of every lottery-collected dollar as mandated by the State. Your columnist is one of those seniors who enjoy the benefit of riding free on SEPTA. Here’s a thought — why not us seniors take the lead in helping our desperate public schools? Many of us can afford a paltry dime to ride around the city. I’m a little backward on my math, but if we asked the State to take a dime per senior rider out of the lottery coffers, we might ensure that there are enough textbooks to go around for each public school kid. Playing the lottery would mean more than watching the benefits all flow back to us. Caution, my friends, is in order. As John Oliver pointed out on his HBO show “Last Week Tonight,” 21 out of the 24 states that currently help fund schools through their lottery do not actually use that money to increase school funding, but to lower corporate taxes. But we would never have to worry about the Republicans in Harrisburg doing anything so underhanded as that, would we? Speaking of funding our schools, we have already run into a stumbling block on the cigarette tax, something I modestly admit I mentioned as a possibility in this column a number of weeks back. You remember how the 2% cigarette tax was decided upon as a way to funnel some money to our schools, don’t you? I pointed out at the time that it seemed odd to me that at the same time we are imploring folks not to smoke, we are becoming dependent on them to keep smoking for the good of our public school system. I seldom predict stuff with any accuracy, but you can be sure that those few times that I do, I will mention it in this column. You would be surprised at how many different ways that I’ve discovered to write “I told you so.” It seems that the stores located near the city’s boundaries that sell smokes are not selling smokes anymore since the new tax was imposed. Have those smokers been struck by the fear of God (otherwise known as the American Cancer Society) into suddenly not smoking? Cynic that I am, I believe these smokers may be taking advantage of crossing into the suburbs to buy their cigarettes. Don’t fear, I have another idea. Let’s implement a “border patrol” to guard City Line Avenue (I do think the idea of an electrified 300-foot-high fence is a bit premature, but definitely a possibility). If need be, we should invite Sen. Ted Cruz to come and take a look and give us his assessment. He’s known as being profence. Cruz can use the occasion to announce his candidacy for President. On target

Merida (voiced by Kelly Macdonald) draws attention for far more than her fiery mane in 2012’s “Brave.”

n By R. Kurt Osenlund Movie Reviewer

W

ith “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1” hitting theaters, we’re revisiting other bow-andarrow films that hit the mark.

Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991) Kevin Costner is no Errol Flynn, but that’s no reason to skip this arguable classic of the 1990s, which retold the story of Robin Hood in thrilling fashion, and was bolstered by supporting stars like Morgan Freeman and Alan Rickman. Costner’s Robin fires flaming arrows in the film’s climax, but the most memorable archery scene involves the camera following as it speeds toward its forest-set bull’s-eye. Brave (2012) Fresh off the energy of “The Hunger Games” (a brand that empowered girls to win the day and literally hit their targets), Pixar’s “Brave” put the bow in the hand of a princess — who’s looking for anything but a prince’s hand in marriage. Though excessively derided, “Brave” excels at being part of a growing group of girl-power animated flicks, and in between all the archery, tells a touching mother-daughter tale. You’re Next (2011) If you’re caught amid a home invasion, you may be able to bar the doors and secure the dead bolts, but good luck blocking the windows from military-grade crossbows. In this mini-masterstroke of break-in terror, masked killers pick off members of an uppity family, in part by firing deadly arrows through the windows of their very 1-percent-y mansion. Indeed, the film is a skewering of culture.

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003) All three “Lord of the Rings” films boast the ace archery skills of super elf Legolas, but it’s the final installment that sees him in truly extreme action. While keeping a vocal tally of how many Orcs he offs with his (endless) arrows, Legolas climbs a massive enemy elephant, fires three shots into its brain and then surfs down its trunk. Classy.

In “Hero,” Flying Snow (Maggie Cheung) vows revenge upon a sovereign for her father’s death in battle

Hero (2002) It’s one thing to see arrows fired; it’s quite another to see them rain down from the sky in a black and beautiful storm. This is just one of countless painterly images in Yimou Zhang’s picturesque “Hero,” a sweeping Chinese epic about a nameless soldier (Jet Li) fighting his way through the brutality of the Qin Dynasty circa 227 B.C. In just over a decade, the film’s battle scenes have become legendary. Ben’s Pumpkin Soup

H

alloween has come and gone, but that doesn’t mean you need to leave pumpkins out of your life until next year. If you’re left scratching your head figuring out what to do with the seasonal fruit other than to make jack-o-lanterns and pies, Ben Stanko, from the 900 block of Wolf Street, has a dish to open your eyes to the possibilities. His Pumpkin Soup not only doubles in serving size easily enough, but can also be frozen to enjoy later on as long as the half-and-half hasn’t been added yet. Not only will you warm yourself up with this dish, but you’ll also make the most of the flavors of fall. No carving or candles required. SPR

In a large pot, sauté the onion and leek in butter until soft. Add all other ingredients, except the halfand-half. Bring to boil, then lower heat and simmer, uncovered, for 15 minutes. Remove the bay leaf. Use immersion blender to puree soup until smooth. Adjust seasoning, and stir in the half-and-half before serving, if desired.

sourdough bread. With this in life, nothing is bad. The consistency of the mousse, along with the temperature, was spot on. It was cool and intoxicating. A spoon of icy cold sorbet made with cassis was another first for me. It was tart and readied my palate for the next course. Skate wing was popular 10 years ago, and I was delighted to see Styer included it on his menu. It was simply seasoned and pan seared, served with butternut squash risotto, pancetta and topped with a sherry reduction. Skate is a mild white fleshed fish, so the sauce is crucial to add flavor. Edward’s duck confit ($28) was a triumph of flavor and texture. The duck “cooked” in its own fat before roasting and was served with spaetzel, which were as fine as my Austrian-born grandmother’s, and roasted Brussels sprouts. The duck was so tender, I hardly needed a knife to cut it. Our final course before dessert was Styer’s pork belly — one of his signature dishes. He paired it with sweet potatoes and escarole. A tad of Dijon was added to the pan juices for a bit of tang. Desserts were a malted milk chocolate ice cream served with a sweet and salty brittle, and a vanilla bean cream cheese cannoli with an oat crumble and apples. Edward, the ice cream lover in the family, opted for a scoop of vanilla and one of chocolate, complete with a candle and “Happy Birthday” written in chocolate script. During the evening, Styer made his way through the dining room and chatted with his guests. Service at Fond is extremely well-orchestrated, probably the best I have experienced in many months. I brought a flashlight, but never used it. I could read the menu and see Styer’s beautiful creations on the plate. Carl, Edward and I agreed it was the finest meal we have had all year. Four tips of the toque to Fond. SPR

hen it opened five years ago, Fond immediately became a destination restaurant for those of us who appreciate fine contemporary French food and impeccable service. People brought their best wines and settled in to enjoy an evening orchestrated by three friends and their staff. Chef Lee Styer, pastry chef Jessie Prawlucki, who is his wife, and front-of-the-house master Tory Keomanivong did everything right. Two years ago, they moved across the street to a somewhat larger space. The dining room has a bar, soft lighting and music, polished wood tables and a contemporary French menu. Although Fond has a liquor license, patrons can bring your own wine Tuesday through Thursday. The reservation was made in cousin Carl’s name. We were about to celebrate Edward’s birthday. I was recognized when we arrived, but everyone in the room received the same fine care and service as we did. Miguel, our waiter, opened the champagne, and we This Passyunk Square restaurant, which opened toasted the birthday boy. Styer has put together a seasonal in 2009 and has since relocated to a larger menu using ingredients sourced from local farms. Guests space, continues to leave fond impressions can choose to order a la carte, a five-course dinner for $57 with its patrons. or a seven-course dinner for $67. Carl never experienced Photo by Corey Carter a tasting menu, so he and I opted for the seven-course “I know Kevin. He worked at Le Bec-Fin, and I was a while Edward ordered a la carte. The amuse-bouche of the evening was a creamy, heady waiter there,” he replied. This rich soup, fragrant with foie and herbs, imparted mushroom soup served in a pony glass. It set the stage for what was to come. Prawlucki’s bread service included the a velvet texture and “ducky” flavor that is difficult to definest olive bread I have ever tasted and a French loaf. It scribe. Diners have to experience it themselves. Next up was Greek-style escargot napped with fennel, arrived with soft butter topped with fleur de sel. Shrimp ceviche ($13 a la carte) was a tasty nod to gazpacho, piperade and feta sauce. I have never eaten escargot preand Styer had the perfect hand with the spice. The acid pared in this manner. Since they have little flavor to begin with, the fennel afforded some sweetness while the feta “cooked” the shrimp just right. Fond An autumn salad ($11 a la carte) was crafted with en- added a touch of salt. The chicken liver mousse was another star of the night. 1537 S. 11th Street dive, apples, blue cheese and walnuts and tossed in a light 215-551-5000 vinaigrette. The surprise of the evening was foie gras This pureed wonder of deliciousness was shaped into a quenelle and served with pickled red onion and toasted fondphilly.com soup. “The only chef I know who makes this is Comment on this restaurant or review at Restaurant Review: = Poor = Fair = Very Good = Extraordinary Kevin Sbraga,” I said to Miguel. southphillyreview.com/food-and-drink/reviews. Preparing to mark the Passyunk Square site’s one-year anniversary, the proprietor has indeed made the location a celebration of diversity and has the clientele to prove it. “I’ve spent most of my life looking for and enjoying global flavors,” the 52-year-old South Philly inhabitant, who runs the establishment with husband Kashif, said. “When I saw the chance to bring that interest to this neighborhood, I knew it would be a great adventure.” Having cooked since childhood, the Vineland, N.J. native initiated her courtship of area residents’ palates in 2008 by becoming a Christmas Village vendor. Desiring to offer “something a little richer,” Hussain, whose reaction to having her first Bananas Foster years ago was “Wow, what is this?”, has heard similar sentiments from patrons, who, like her Christmas Village customers, have expressed their ecstasy by writing messages on paper plates. Add the caramelized bananas when the crepe is finished on the underside. Fold the crepe first on the right in a small triangular shape when turning it inward. Make the second fold the larger triangle, turning the crepe over and folding it so that it forms a large cone shape. Put two or three scoops of ice creams inside the “crepe cone,” and place on a plate. Decorate with whipped cream, cinnamon sugar, chocolate and banana slices. We would like to remember Katie on the 25th Anniversary of her death. When it was decided that we would do some type of fundraiser each year to help promote wheelchair sports in our area, we never thought that our financial support would become such a vital part of wheelchair competition throughout the country. Katie’s Komets wheelchair basketball team has introduced many athletes to the game and has enabled them to compete and go on to win scholarships to college.

One of our graduates has gone on to become a wheelchair Paralympic champion. It is truly a privilege to watch these athletes grow into independent adults. This is what the Katie Kirlin Fund is all about and because of your support we have been able to continue this effort. Katie has touched our lives and now through your support we are able to touch the lives of our past and present athletes. Joe, Roseann, Burger, Kerry & nephews Eddie Mooney and Patrick Kirlin

Hallowed be thy game pro An East Passyunk Crossing football team downed another South Philly squad to score a city crown. n By Joseph Myers Review Managing Editor

F

ans of the football team from Ss. Neumann-Goretti High School, 1736 S. 10th St., will forever fancy the first 168 yards that running back Khalil Roane muscled for Saturday versus Prep Charter, 1928 Point Breeze Ave., but they will also likely label him a member of their extended families for his final carry. Thanks to the junior’s three-yard score with 1:13 remaining, the parochial club downed its public opponent 12-6 to capture the City AA title at the South Philadelphia super site, 10th and Bigler streets. “On that drive, I just told my linemen that if they made their blocks, there would be no way I’d let them down,” the SecondTeam All-Catholic said of inciting a celebration that an interception by linebacker Jack Taylor sealed. “We played as one and stepped up to the challenge. That’s why we’re champions.” The Olney dweller and his teammates, who will host Springfield (Montco) in a 1 p.m. Class AA District 12 Subregional tilt at the same location Saturday, had advanced to the all-South Philly duel with Nov. 8’s 34-12 Catholic League AA final massacre of West Catholic. That annihilation gave the Saints their school’s first pigskin crown since 1954 and snapped the Burrs’ 52-game league winning streak. Their counterpart entered the matchup having made history, too, as the Huskies bested Del-Val 14-12, also on Nov. 8, to secure the Public League’s AA trophy — a program first. Familiar to one another as scrimmage foes and friends, the teams took to the field with mutual respect and ample ambition in their voyage to victory. Prep Charter, 9-0-1 coming in, appeared poised for an immediate momentum boost courtesy of the athleticism of senior quarterback Vian Dolo and junior running back Quadir Strothers, who ripped off impressive runs, but their adversaries harried the Huskies on their inaugural possession. The public league representatives returned the favor in the first quarter, but nobody could keep Roane from forcing his 185-pound frame toward the end zone in the second session, and he tallied a fouryard touchdown two plays after hauling in a screen pass from senior quarterback and Second-Team honoree Ray Lenhart that

Junior Khalil Roane tallied 171 of Neumann-Goretti’s 195 rushing yards. P h o t o b y R i c h a r d Ba r n e s

covered 24 yards. The Saints recovered the fumbled kickoff and had terrific field position in looking to balloon the lead but could not capitalize. Dolo, who took a huge first-quarter hit that coach David Hand confirmed broke his throwing hand, let his feet do damage on the subsequent series, tallying a five-yard score that sent the units to their locker rooms tied 6-6. “I was very proud of our effort,” Roane said of the first-half script. “We definitely wanted more points, but in the long run, we knew that if we came out strong to start the third quarter, we could send a message that we were the hungrier group of guys.” Well-knoWn for their prowess on defense, especially through the feats of junior lineman and Division-I prospect Karamo Dioubate, the Huskies had their will tested as the squads settled in for the

final 24 minutes, especially when gunning for third-down stops. Lenhart twice connected with sophomore wide receiver Emil Moody for big gains, and hard-fought-for ground advances by Roane and senior fullback Mike DiFrancesco put coach Chalie Szydlik’s Saints in the position to go marching in, but an interception spoiled an 8:37 possession. Despite more admirable jaunts by Strothers, who would finish with 113 yards on 18 carries, and Dolo, who would garner 41 on 10 attempts, the scoreboard still featured matching 6s as the last quarter commenced. “This whole year, we’ve had doubters,” DiFrancesco, a First-Team fullback and linebacker selection from Broad and Pollock streets, said of perceptions of the Saints’ ability to transform hopes into realities. “We’ve built this program to be something we can take pride in, so we

knew that going into the fourth, we would have to show fire to win the game.” The Huskies, however, seemed the more zealous bunch when forcing a three-andout and advancing to the Saints’ 19-yard line after two well-designed calls for Strothers. Four plays later, though, the West Passyunk-based behemoths again needed to face Roane and his unwavering will. “As the season progressed, I wanted to be more of a factor,” the workhorse, who bolted for 209 yards against West Catholic’s stingy defenders, said of desiring touches. “We believe in ourselves so that last possession was the chance to show we’re for real.” The laborer for legitimacy proved potent, equally relying on his body and brain to give the Saints’ faithful the feeling that the day would end divinely. On third-and-goal, he gained immortality by breaking the tie, leaving his defensive peers to preserve the edge. With the ball on their own 40, the Huskies knew the clock was their running game’s chief enemy, so Hand handed the task of mounting a comeback to Dolo’s compromised right hand. Following an incompletion, Taylor, a First-Team league pick, became a trivia question answer when he snared a pass, causing one sideline to erupt in jubilation and the other to experience frustration. “We have great coaches and believe in ourselves, so we knew from day one that this could happen,” DiFrancesco, who tallied seven tackles, said of the effort. “When there’s talent and determination, the results can be amazing.” “We definitely earned this because we beat the hardest teams,” senior offensive and defensive lineman Joe D’Emilio, another All-Catholic designee, said of yielding only 18 points to offensive juggernauts. “We were able to contain them both and show what we’re made of.” Realizing that his squad has joined the Burrs and Huskies as a formidable foe, the resident of the 1300 block of Reed Street beamed when thinking about the next step in showing the Saints’ severity. “It’s been a great run so far,” he said of their 8-4 campaign. “We want much more, though.” SPR Contact Managing Editor Joseph Myers at jmy jmyers@southphillyreview.com or ext. 124.
