Awareness in their schoolyard May 7. Santino Stagliano emerged from a van parked on South Fifth Street just before the march began to avoid the direct sun and heat. The 10-yearold is now a celebrity in our midst, a young man living with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) who finds solace in drawing dragons on T-shirts, which are now in high-demand. ASD

is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects 1.5 percent of American children, which means about one in 68 were diagnosed in 2014. And last week, Stephanie Shane led the school’s sixth annual walk for Autism Awareness as part of a monthlong national campaign to educate and advocate for children and adults struggling with the disorder and its consequences. “It was an amazing day, it was amazing. I think the way that the school community and our community partners came together and put together such an awesome event to create autism awareness was just phenomenal, principal Carolyn Williams said. “The neighbors coming

out, too, and waving at the children as they were walking through the neighborhood, it was an amazing sight to see – I was so proud of the students and staff. The Dickinson Square West-based K-8 school has about 370 students and at least a hundred of them, mostly the younger grades, got a police escort to walk several blocks around the school, finishing up Moyamensing and Washington avenues. Students, mostly pupils not affected by ASD, held signs of support and encouragement: “Autism Awareness, “Peace, Love, Autism, “Autism Embraces Difference, and “Autism Is Our Superpower among them. Shane, one of four autistic support

instructors, reports a tentative total of at least $2,245 raised from the event and thanks a slew of event sponsors. Geno’s Steaks, Pretzel Factory, Trilogy Graphics, Tequilas Restaurant, Chick-Fil-A, Chris Tatreau, Pepsi and Froggy Carr Wench Brigade all get her praise, as does the police escort, a first in the six years of the walk, especially the father of one autistic student, a traffic argent who led the procession on his motorcycle. “We’re really appreciative of the police and their support. They were a major help that day, Shane said. She and her students raised money in the building all through the month of April, which is national Autism ASS /CB7A; E/:9 ^OUS ,,

To the Editor: Greetings, my fellow citizens. Another election is in our future, yet I am not rejoicing or even excited about it! I wanted to pose a few questions to all City of Brotherly Love residents. Do you know which mayoral candidate has said “I will fix the public schools dilemma? Or “I will create more jobs for our citizens? What about “I want to hire more police officers so the citizens can feel safe again? Another one is “I want to fix the city’s abandoned housing by developing ... My favorite one however, is “I want to end corruption in our city government and make everyone accountable. Now, back to the question of which candidate said it ... no surprise here, it was

all of them! I don’t just mean the candidates running for election now, no, no. I’m referring to mayoral hopefuls for the last 50 years or so. I would like to suggest a different way “we elect mayors. The lip service that they spew should be disregarded. Town hall meetings, debates, relentless commercials laced with insults directed at other mayoral candidates can and should be a thing of the past. I guarantee that if we choose a different method, things might actually change. New standards should be implemented and voting should now move in a different direction. I will be voting solely based on superficial qualities such as, the shoes a candidate wears. Or, how well their hair looks. Maybe I’ll go with the candidate whose

voice annoys me the least. Perhaps I will base it on what make of vehicle they drive. The most physically fit. The least physically fit. If they wear designer prescription glasses or not. Who goes to church the most. What flavor ice cream they like. My point is, believe nothing they say because we hear it every four years, and nothing changes. So I will be voting based on superficial nonsense. That way, I will no longer feel as though I’ve been lied to by those seeking my vote, and I will have only myself to blame when they accomplish nothing while in office! I find it easier to make myself accountable than a person that I know will accomplish nothing! Voting for someone based on what they say is just as futile and dangerous as actually believing what they say is truthful. Trust me, we couldn’t do any worse voting for politicians within those parameters. In fact, my idea is so stupid and moronic, it may actually work!

“This is a friendly town. There are places way more hostile, and I’m tired of the general attitude that people have of us as being roughnecks. Pete Condo, 16th and Jackson streets

To the Editor: Surprisingly, a poverty forum was held on May 7, 2015 at the Broad Street Ministry and only two mayoral candidates — Jim Kenney and Melissa Bailey — arrived on time. Lynne Abraham, Nelson Diaz and T. Milton Street arrived more than 30 minutes late. Doug Oliver and Anthony Hardy Williams did not make an appearance at all. On a political level, this speaks volumes. Sister Mary Scullion, who is the executive director of Project HOME, which advocates for the homeless, was the moderator. More than 400 people attended the event to hear the candidates discuss issues concerning poverty in our city. Needless to say, some of the candidates thought “I’m not surprised because people’s attitudes can be pretty nasty. As you age, though, you learn it’s all about respecting yourself and others. Samantha Velykis, 17th and Porter streets

that their time was more valuable than their constituents. Let’s hope that is not an indication of their commitment to end homelessness in Philadelphia. I strongly urge everyone to vote on May 19. Have your voice heard, and make a difference. 1O`]Z / >Oa_cO`SZZ] A]cbV >VWZORSZ^VWO

7b¸a O TO[WZg [ObbS` To the Editor: I’m writing in response to state Rep. Jordan Harris’s letter titled “Troubling but not surprisingâ€? (May 7). In his letter, Rep. Harris asks the question, why aren’t inner city youth good enough, why aren’t they worthy of intervention? He also indicates that our innercity children have been neglected, abused and left for dead by the system, the system that they are supposed to trust to serve and protect them. I respectfully submit that Rep. Harris is completely wrong in his argument. I believe that the system that has neglected inner-city youth is not law enforcement. Nor is it city, state or federal government or even our educational system. The system that has failed them is their own family. End of story. Tons of money is spent every year on our youth, and rightfully so. There are many opportunities for inner-city youths, including government-funded employment programs, city recreation centers that are open in all neighborhoods and resourceladen libraries. Putting blame on government is easy, and it’s a cop-out. @WQVO`R 2W5WOQ][] A]cbV >VWZORSZ^VWO Comment on these letters or topics at southphillyreview.com/opinion/letters.

“So many people are moving here, so I disagree. I think it’s pretty friendly and that the media is behind making it seem otherwise. Gene Foschini, 17th and Ritner streets

When the driver said he had no key, the offender delivered gun blows to his face and head, leading him to sustain several lacerations. They struggled after the suspect was told to drop to his knees and place his hands on his head. The victim removed the magazine from the gun, but the at-large transgressor regained control of the piece and struck him several more times before fleeing on foot northbound on South Harmony Street. The complainant, who drove himself to the medical facility, where he received staples to close his head wounds, described the attacker as black and 5-foot11; having a dark complexion and a thin build; being clean-shaven; and wearing a dark T-shirt. n April 30, District Attorney R. Seth Williams and Philadelphia Inspector General Amy L. Kurland announced the arrest of Ri Quang Wu for allegedly offering a Philadelphia Office of Property Assessment employee $300. The detainment of the 59-year-old man comes nearly a year after an incident in his 500-block-of-Mountain-Street abode. In that matter, Wu, having been present at an April 29, 2014 Bureau of Revenue and Taxation property assessment appeals hearing on his residence in which the overseeing body agreed to a reassessment of the space, reportedly “bumped into the evaluator on May 5, ’14, stuffing $300 in his pants. The individual tried to return the money, but Wu would not take it back, a release contends. The employee ventured back to his employer, notifying his supervisors of the occurrence and giving them the cash. The Office of Property Assessment contacted the Office of inspector General, who facilitated the arrest of Wu through the District Attorney’s Office. Authorities charged him with bribery in official and political matters and obstruction administration of law or other governmental function, and he awaits a May 22 status hearing.

Authorities are seeking a man who assaulted a taxi driver in Grays Ferry. At 4:10 a.m. Sunday, police met with the complainant at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and learned the at-large figure had flagged him on the 200 block of North Broad Street to request transport to 31st Street and Grays Ferry Avenue, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. When they arrived, the passenger ordered him to keep driving, with the ride ending at South Harmony and Reed streets. The offender, now masked, approached the driver’s window, pointed a black gun at the motorist and declared “If you move, I’ll shoot. Give me all your money. After receiving $80, a black HTC cell phone and a GPS, the aggressor ordered him to leave the vehicle and give him the key, Tolliver said.

A man parted with various possessions, including $500, in a West Passyunk-situated incident. The complainant flagged down law enforcement figures at approximately 6:10 p.m. April 24 and alerted them of a robbery at 23rd Street and Snyder Avenue, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. Having just withdrawn $500 from a Wells Fargo ATM, he started to walk to his vehicle when an unknown man, upon his opening of the driver’s side door, grabbed the victim by the back of his hoodie, turned him around while placing a gun against his chest and barked “Empty your pockets. He handed the gun wielder the cash, a white Samsung Galaxy S4 cell phone and his wallet, which contained various credit cards. He described the attacker, who fled northbound on 24th Street, as black, 30 to

Local news stations began airing surveillance video footage April 29, with an anonymous tipster identifying the perpetrator as Derek Jackson. Authorities arrested the 47-year-old homeless man on May 1, charging him with robbery, possession of an instrument of crime, recklessly endangering another person and assault. He had not posted his $25,000 bail as of press time and awaits a May 19 preliminary hearing.

ing. “The DIA decided to launch Inside Out as a way to get the city interacting with, and talking about art, Victoria Rogers, a vice president of arts at the Knight Foundation, said. “Detroiters have begun to feel like they have ownership over the museum’s collection, it’s been so successful. The Knight Foundation is a thriving byproduct of the Knight brothers’ newspaper empire, which seeks to foster arts, engage communities, and encourage innovation in media and journalism. The foundation contributed nearly $320,000 to the PMA for this project. “We’re so glad to see Philadelphia embracing the project. We’ve been watching social media and have loved seeing how people are already interacting with, talking about and enjoying the art, Rogers said. Obviously, there’s an accompanying hashtag: #ArtInsideOut. “It wasn’t just for the avenue but for the entire neighborhood, Darren Fava, an East Passyunk Civic Crossing board member and resident of the 1100 block of Emily Street, said. He was part of the team that helped the PMA identify ideal spaces, which was a good challenge to have, he says. “The Moorish Chief is one of his picks for most arresting of the 11.

“That’s one of my favorites in the whole museum, so it’s awesome that it’s the gateway to the neighborhood.â€? Fava says he was thrilled to be a representative at the kick-off event a couple weeks ago, standing beside big-name neighborhoods spread throughout Philadelphia’s more than 40 zip codes. “We’re probably one of the most urban neighborhoods. I think it shows how far we as a neighborhood have come as a walkable destination in the company of those other neighborhoods. It’s awesome,â€? Fava said. s the Philadelphia Museum of Art says it, “imagine encountering Vincent van Gogh’s ‘Sunflowers’ along a bike path, or Claude Monet’s ‘The Japanese Footbridge and the Water Lily Pool, Giverny’ in the middle of a park. It’s a new project that’s largely funded by the Knight Foundation, Art Inside Out, and on Monday, 11 replicas of PMA masterpieces were installed along and in reach of East Passyunk Avenue. A real centerpiece is “The Moorish Chief, an 1878 painting by Eduard Charlemont that was installed at Trumark Financial Credit Union, 1931 S. Broad St. It serves almost as a welcoming image to the avenue and marks the beginning of this outdoor exhibit that creeps north with five more on or just-off the avenue and another four at parks or schools. “We are delighted to share our collection in this way. Not only do these beautifully framed reproductions faithfully represent important works in the collection, they will offer chance encounters and bring to delight to each community, PMA director and CEO Timothy Rub said. Media got its replicas May 1, May 5 saw Haddonfield, N.J.’s install, Newtown got its haul May 7, and yesterday, Chestnut Hill got a lot more public art. This round of PMA replicas will be taken down in August, when they’ll be shuffled to Fishtown and Kensington, Ambler, Norristown, Wayne and West Chester. H&G Sign Co. and Krain Outdoor Advertising helped produce and install these works that are weather- and graffiti-resistant. They’re pretty much indestructible. Replicas are to-size or no larger than a sheet of plywood at 4-by-8 feet, Inside Out project coordinator Gina Ciralli revealed. It all started six years ago, when the Detroit Institute of Arts was reinstalling its entire collection to make it more engag-

one, and it’s not an accident, said Ciralli. In Newtown, they matched a painting by Winslow Homer called “The Life Line with an Insurance agency. In Haddonfield, Jacob Lawrence’s “The Libraries Are Appreciated is hung in front of a library. Mt. Airy’s Lovett Memorial Library is in sight from Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema’s “A Reading From Homer, which depicts robed scholars reading books on Greek steps. The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society’s pop-up garden, going in at Ninth and Wharton streets, fittingly, will be home to Rubens Peale’s “From Nature in the Garden (1856). “We want people to remember that the museum is there and it’s not just for tourists or for rich art historians. There are great ways to go without paying full price, Ciralli pointed out. “EPX is going to be great – it’s very urban and cool. She added “The Moorish Chief is “one of the most famous paintings at the museum, so it’s a really good and powerful entrance into the Avenue and the art exhibition. Joncarl Lachman, co-owner of Noord with his partner, was thrilled to get the Rauschenberg on his business’s outer wall. “I thought it was so cool. It shows the health of the neighborhood. The concern isn’t that it gets destroyed, the proprietor said on installation day. “This is fabulous – look at this city. Another perk for Inside Out coming to South Philly is that all four zips get free admission to the museum on the weekend of July 17 to 19. It’s part and parcel to what PMA special projects manager Katy Friedland says is part of their new master plan to engage the city with its collection in bold new ways. “We have a new strategic plan at the PMA, to have a surprise at every turn and to be more open and welcoming and be more relevant, she said, noting this is their effort to get “off our big hill in Fairmount. “This is no strings attached. We just want people to be into art and just enjoy it and if they do and that makes them go to a gallery or makes them have a conversation about a work of art while they’re standing in front of it – all of that is the museum’s mission whether or not they come through our doors. +(*

Getting an opportunity to interact with probably more people than he has before, there’s been such positive feedback from the community in South Philadelphia. There are plenty of stigmas about autism, and that doesn’t sit well with Barney. “I hate it when people say that people on the spectrum don’t care or have feelings. They might feel awkward or not know how to respond, she said. She also defends the obsessive interests many spectrum kids express (“A lot of our kids are obsessive about SEPTA) and says “it can be a really good way to connect — sometimes I think people think it’s a bad thing or negative to have these quirky interests, but it can be really helpful. Lastly, no blame need ever fall on parents. “We don’t know what causes it, and I don’t think we should be blaming parents for anything they might’ve done in their life, ever, Barney said. +(* Contact Staff Writer Bill Chenevert at bchenevert@southphillyreview.com or ext. 117. s the recipient of numerous accolades over his 19-year tenure with PNC Bank, Salvatore J. Patti could claim exalted status, but the resident of the 2500 block of South 21st Street shuns showing off, instead finding satisfaction in pondering the copious connections he has made professionally and personally. For his commitment to forging quality relationships in the financial and communal realms, the Millay Club, the alumni association for Ss. Neumann-Goretti High School, 1736 S. 10th St., will endow him with the Philadelphia Pinnacle Award Saturday. “I feel really honored and excited, the 48-year-old said from his Center City office, where he strengthens the banking behemoth as senior vice president and market leader for the Philadelphia-Southern New Jersey Region. “I will truly treasure the distinction for the rest of my life.

The Girard Estate dweller will collect his commendation at The Hyatt at The Bellevue, with his alma mater, from which he graduated in 1985 when it bore the name St. John Neumann High School, formerly 2600 Moore St., furthering his focus on appreciating one’s duty to others, the fulfillment of which reflects what he tabs his “value fingerprint. Owing to his humility, which he credits to his parents, Patti is passing on considering the accolade a cause for displaying excessive pride, deeming its acquisition another example of the rewards of his penchant for surrounding himself with those whose talents exceed his. “I initially said ‘Absolutely not, there are plenty of others you could acknowledge,’ he said of the alumni group’s outreach to him. “I’ve been around so many brilliant people, and I’m not the type of guy to toot my own horn or have it tooted for me. Though he will surely retain his reluctance to accept recognition,

B?<;IJOB;I even noting he is particularly looking forward to hearing about what attendees have going on in their lives, Patti will deliver a speech and acknowledge the kudos with a beaming smile. He sees the evening as another opportunity to laud Catholic schooling, which he will continue to champion as the Archdiocese of Philadelphia-appointed chairman of the Advisory Board for Elementary Education. The ceremony will have Patti as the centerpiece, but, like other instances along his never-monotonous journey, it will enhance his enthusiasm for connectivity, which he sees not only as a key theme within his existence but a core element to anyone’s handling of life, which he considers a “contact sport. “You’re really only as good as the contacts you have and the relationships you build, Patti said. “Wherever I’ve been, especially within the finance world and at PNC, I’ve known amazing individuals and great mentors. As I’ve matured, I’ve realized that with every person you touch and you talk to, you’re learning something. BORN IN SICILY, the impending honoree has been compiling local lessons for 46 of his 48 years. His family relocated from

Palermo to Overbrook before settling on the 2400 block of South Mole Street and the 2300 block of South 15th Street, where his mother still resides. Having established a banking foundation as a registrant at St. Monica School, 17th and Ritner streets and 16th and Porter streets, he began to bank on the financial world as his destiny while attending Neumann. “I just seemed to have a knack for it, Patti said of the defunct Grays Ferry institution’s influence on his maturation. “I started to think I could distinguish myself as someone who helped others to have a better grasp of their financial identities. Matriculation at Philadelphia University, where he studied accounting and finance, yielded his first job as a certified public accountant, with Meridian Bank bearing his durable career in ’91. An adept climber of the corporate ladder, he has become a highly regarded member of PNC’s 50,000-employee-strong family and has won many plaudits, including admission in the Chairman’s Circle, which prizes figures as leading sales professional company wide, in 2000, the year after earning the first of four Laurel Society awards, acknowledgments that praise top sales pro-

fessionals and managers within the commercial banking group. “We have valued constituencies here, so I have had no difficulty with paying it forward and giving back with regards to the blessings that I have been fortunate to enjoy, Patti, who won the Gallup Great Workplace Award for excellence in leadership and employee engagement in ’09, the Special Achievement Award in Business from the National Italian American Political Action Committee in ’10 and inclusion in the Biltmore Who’s Who for demonstrating leadership and achievement in ’11, said. “In banking and finance, we always talk about diversification, which is a term that I like extending outside the business world to reflect my interest in bonding with all sorts of people. He has courted such characters through various board affiliations, including turns with the Girard Estate Neighborhood Association, for whom he served as treasurer, the Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society, the Philadelphia Industrial Development Corp., the Philadelphia Police Athletic League, the Italian American Chamber of Commerce and the Union League of Philadelphia. Those opportunities and other

ventures delight the ebullient personality, who noted how much he enjoys coaching, leading and mentoring individuals, especially youths and young adults, including Annalise and Joseph, his children with wife Josephine, with whom he recently celebrated 25 years of marriage. “I can’t sit still, it seems, he said with a laugh, noting he enlists sports, art, agriculture, farming and wine making as pastimes. “I certainly want to keep being inspired and offering wisdom. Two days away from the Center Citysituated event, Patti finds himself blessed to have achieved so many memories along his professional and personal paths. For someone whose livelihood depends on dollars and cents, those experiences have staked their claim as boons that he can count on forever. “I appreciate each day because it’s another chance to grow, Patti said. “I’m ecstatic to see what’s next. SPR For more information, call 215-389-2440. B]^ b`WPcbS b] :SbbS`[O\ (David Letterman is retiring from the “Late Show, so here’s this columnist’s tribute — using one of his favorite forms of humor — the Top-10 list)

Top-10 reasons the “Duck Dynasty musical flopped in Vegas: 10.) Its big musical number involved making duck calls. 9.) Hugh Jackman declined the lead role. 8.) In a silly attempt to attract more gays to buy tickets, they forced the lead to wear pink camouflage. 7.) Liquor sales suffered when they sold only moonshine. 6.) The show’s brisk sales from West Monroe, La., were not enough to pay the bills. 5.) Surprisingly, duck hunters around the rest of the country do not have a big interest in visiting a resort in the desert. 4.) The sale of souvenir camouflage T-shirts was a bit off expectations. 3.) It did not go over big when the producers decided that realism dictated that there be no running water in the casino theater’s restrooms during the running of the show. 2.) Duck Dynasty family members insisted that the big pasodoble dance number be cut from the finale leaving the ending

anti-climactic. 1.) The Vegas audience kept hollering for Siegfried and Roy during the entire performance. Top-10 reasons Tiger Woods and Lindsey Vonn split: 10.) Tiger was having problems with his putts 9.) I really can’t top number 10. 8.) She insisted that Tiger stop impersonating a golfing great. 7.) Tiger is not used to second billing on “SportsCenter. 6.) After a spat, Vonn tried to hit Tiger with one of his golf clubs and missed. 5.) Vonn claimed she was mislead into thinking that Tiger was the golfer for whom they named the half-lemonade, half-iced tea drink. 4.) Tiger decided maybe blondes were not bringing him good luck. 3.) Tiger indicated an interest in hanging around with Bruce Jenner. 2.) Tiger refused to stop wearing his dark green jacket to bed. 1.) Worth repeating — Tiger was having problems with his putts. Top-10 reasons a Republican will not become Mayor of Philadelphia in 2015: 10.) Hint: Try to name the Republican candidate for Mayor in Philadelphia in 2015. 9.) If you guessed Melissa Murray Bailey, chances are that you are Melissa Murray Bailey. 8.) Name the Republican candidate for Mayor of Philadelphia in ’11. Hint: it wasn’t Thatcher Longstreth. Second hint: she lost. 7.) The next person to spot a campaign sign for Melissa Murray Bailey, please raise your hand 6.)Ditto for a television campaign commercial. 5.) Melissa Murray Bailey may become the first mayoral candidate to have more names than votes in the upcoming Republican Primary. 4.) Not that it makes her a bad candidate. 3.) Philadelphians have decided that Democrats have done such a good job of running this city since the last Republican mayor in 1952 that they’re afraid to switch parties. 2.) Why doesn’t Milton Street run as a Republican for mayor? Isn’t that an idea whose time has come? 1.) Karen Brown was the Republican candidate for Mayor in ’11, but I bet you knew that. She received 21.4 percent of the vote. Good luck, Melissa Murray Bailey! SPR Comment at southphillyreview.com/opinion/cardella.

Top-10 reasons David Letterman is retiring: 10.) His interns grew too old to fool around with. 9.) Retiring? Is that what you call it when network executives put a gun to your head? 8.) Regis Philbin needed a pinochle partner at the local senior center. 7.) His audience demographic was older than “The Golden Girls. 6.) Dave would get cranky every time the staff made a mistake and gave him coffee with caffeine. 5.) He kept asking Paul Shaffer to play songs from “No, No, Nanette. 4.) The new network guy kept asking Dave, “so what’s with the gap between your front teeth? 3.) He mistook guest Kim Kardashian for a stripper he dated 30 years ago. 2.) He always wanted to return to Indiana and become a race car driver. 1.) He was left with one sponsor asking him not to retire — Depends.

This conversation will both contextualize the work featured in the Museum’s special exhibition Richard Avedon: Family Affairs in the period it was created and explore its contemporary relevance, focusing on the political and social zeitgeist of the 1970s and today, as well as Avedon’s life and career. Featured experts include professors Sara Blair (University of Michigan) and Thomas J. Sugrue (University of Pennsylvania), as well as Paul Roth, former director of the Richard Avedon Foundation. This program is being held in conjunction with the exhibition Richard Avedon: Family Affairs, which is on view through August 2.

nspecting this detailed recipe or any of his other publication offerings, nobody can claim Mark Casasanto lacks pride in his culinary creations. The resident of the 2400 block of South 20th Street proves that when people call Italy the land of love, they are not referring only to appreciation for romance. The Girard Estate denizen noted this is a great summer recipe for those tired of grilling or unable to venture to the device because of bad weather. Fish always pairs well with wine, with Casasanto suggesting pinot grigio as this dish’s suitable mate. +(*

was immediately hooked. The newcomers have made their mark as well. Sabrina’s Cafe, 910 Christian St., was an instant hit. There is always a line to get in, but the brunch and the burgers are among my favorites. I enjoyed brunch at Monsu, 901 Christian St., a few years ago, and now I want to try dinner. Just last week, I sat down at the bar and enjoyed Anastassi Seafood, 1101 S. Ninth St., happy hour buck a chuck. Blue Point oysters and clams, including little neck, top neck and cherrystones. Just be careful of the horseradish, as it is really hot, but oh so good. My favorite place for dinner is Bibou, 1009 S. Eighth St. Charlotte and Pierre Calmals have made renovations to this shoebox gem that features some of the finest French cuisine anywhere in the city. Calmals, who had been spending his time at his Rittenhouse Square-based Le Cheri, is back in the kitchen at Bibou where he is offering a fixed-priced dinner. Patrons can be sure the finest local ingredients will turn up in all his dishes. Bibou is still BYOB. When I need something for my kitchen, I head over to Fante’s, 1006 S. Ninth St., where Mariella Esposito answers my questions and we have a good chat. My favorite butcher is Sonny D’Angelo, 909 S. Ninth St. His sausages are the finest around. I also know the veal I purchase from him for osso bucco is humanely raised on local farms. May the Italian Market prosper and flourish for another 100 years. +(* 7bOZWO\ ;O`YSb DWaWb]` 1S\bS` ' ' A <W\bV Ab # %& ' ! ow creative can one get with pizza? For Al Grafstrom, co-owner of the Queen Village-based La Fourno Ristorante Trattoria, 636 South St., there seems to be no limit. With no intention of stopping anytime soon, the former resident of Seventh and Reed streets has titled his creative pizza-making sessions as the “Boozy Pizza series. This trial-by-taste phase started out by combining cordials into the sauces. Then, like a reality cooking show, the staff of judges sits down to determine if the pie is good enough to advance and serve to the customers. “We all get together and collaborate, Grafstrom said. “They’re honest. They tell me when it’s a hit and when it’s a flop. The fireball pizza — smoked mozzarella cheese, sliced cherry peppers, cracked pepper and fresh basil — for instance, has been a huge hit from the day it was rolled out two months ago. “It took me a few months of experimentation, but I finally found some flavor combinations that I feel will rival the deliciousness of the pizza that launched this series. We’re having a lot of fun with this, and I plan on continuing it for a long time, he said. But pizza is only a very small part of what this Queen Village-based neighborhood trattoria’s menu is all about. The dishes pay homage to the Abruzzo, Umbria and Tuscany regions of Italy, many of which are homemade using fresh ingredients. Italian cooking comes to Grafstrom naturally, as his mother arrived in America via Italy in 1948. “I’ve been very fortunate to travel to

Italy, the proprietor, who enjoys sending his customers on a culinary journey to the region as they enter via South Street, said. For those looking to do a little pizzamaking experiment at home, the La Fourno team is sharing its recipe for the Evan Williams Seafood Tomato Pie — a sweet and tangy bourbon marinara, jumbo lump crabmeat, fresh shrimp and zesty cherry peppers. Grafstrom said the recipe should translate well, even without the wood-burning oven. “Hopefully, not too well because we want the customers to come in, he said.

he annual Ninth Street Italian Market Festival — taking place 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday — carries some extra meaning this time around as the Philadelphia landmark is celebrating 100 years. The yearly tradition brings young and old from all parts of the city for two days of music, speeches and good food. The Italian Market is one of Philadelphia’s finest treasures. I have been shopping and dining there for many years. I took a trolley to Center City, hopped on a bus and enjoyed going in and out of stores looking for ingredients that I would turn into dinner for my roommates and me. DiBruno Bros., 930 S. Ninth St., and Claudio’s, 924 S. Ninth St., provided bread and cheese. The market has evolved to include immigrants from China, Korea, Vietnam, Laos and Mexico. I can grab a taco, enjoy coffee at Anthony’s Italian Coffee & Chocolate House, 903 S. Ninth St., and head over to Isgro Pasteries, 1009 Christian St., for a cannoli. I frequent reliable butchers, bakers and specialty stores because ordinary supermarkets hold little interest for me. I also enjoy the neighborly personal service that family-owned stores offer. I enjoy discovering new cheeses and charcuterie from around the world. I also like the wide variety of olive oils and vinegars available. I have been buying red and white wine vinegar and sherry vinegar from Claudio’s for a number of years. I find homemade fresh ricotta and mozzarella, which is second to none. I clearly recall becoming immediately hooked the first time Sal at Claudio’s gave me a taste of ricotta salatta. Then there are the restaurants, old and new. Ralph’s Italian Restaurant, 760 S. Ninth St., opened its doors 115 years ago. I remember the first time a piping hot bowl of mussels and the finest lasagna made with fresh sheets of dough was placed before me at Dante & Luigi’s, 762 S. 10th St. As with the ricotta salatta, I

hen Tommy Nardini and Gino Tripodi enrolled at Ss. NeumannGoretti High School, 1736 S. 10th St., in 2011, they hoped to intensify their friendship and continue the winning tradition of the institution’s baseball team. With their missions accomplished, the star catcher and ace pitcher are yearning to prove that nice guys can frequently finish first, as their East Passyunk Crossing-based club commences its crusade for another Catholic League crown. “We have to be hungry to get it done one more time, Tripodi said Tuesday. “So far, we’ve had a great year, with a few down moments here and there, but now is really the time to shine. One of nine seniors on the squad, which yesterday concluded its regular-season slate against Germantown Academy in a game that ended after press time, the 17-year-old resident of 16th Street and Oregon Avenue has proven a prolific rotation presence, with pitching coach Joe Messina tabbing him the “definition of hard work and perseverance paying off for having learned leadership from program alumni. Fittingly, Nardini has been the recipient of his repertoire, as the two have nourished a friendship that dates back to their pre-kindergarten days at St. Richard School, now St. Pio Catholic Regional School, 1826 Pollock St. “It’s been great to mature together, the 18-year-old backstop and inhabitant of the 2900 block of South 15th Street said of the connection between the First-Team All-Catholic selections, which evolved this campaign with Tripodi’s ascension as the Saints’ chief hurler. “We wanted to come here because of our families’ history with the school and because of the reputation of the team, and I know that it’s rare for people to be able to share that with a close friend. With the accomplished contemporaries offering their brand of brilliance, the local diamond occupants had compiled a 13-3 mark ahead of yesterday’s tilt, including an April 18 triumph over Delaware state champion Caravel Academy. That ledger

featured a 9-3 league record, earning the Saints a 2:30 p.m. Saturday home quarterfinal versus either Archbishop Carroll or Conwell-Egan. “We have to be ready immediately, Nardini, the owner of a .415 league average, said of the playoffs, which, after a two-year double-elimination format, will again be a single-loss tournament. “Coming into this year, we knew everybody had to play their role so that the team could connect, Tripodi, whose acceptance of his enhanced workload bred a 5-1 record, 48 strikeouts in 36.2 innings and a 1.35 earned run average in league contests, said. “It’s always about the team for us, and we want to show that we’re the best there is. THE THICK-AS-THIEVES CONFIDANTS began their athletic journey as T-ball registrants at the Delaware Valley Youth Athletic As-

sociation, 2840 S. 18th St., and went on to play Catholic Youth Organization games at McNichol Field, 26th and Moore streets, and Murphy Recreation Center, 300 W. Shunk St. When they needed to determine their next educational and recreational stop, they knew Neumann-Goretti would offer an unrivaled source of support and preparation. “There’s just so much history here, and we wanted to experience it and add to it, Nardini, whose brother, Nicky, preceded him as the Saints’ starting catcher, said. “So many people root for us not to win, so we always want to be strong and go out there to prove them wrong. The highly regarded program has captured four of the last six league championships, with last year’s celebration coming after five elimination-game conquests. Showing their might for such an impressive stretch helped the current corps of

leaders to understand the rewards of constantly applying oneself to the attainment of overall achievement. “That’s just who we are, Nardini, who last night claimed the team MVP award at the club’s banquet, said of never wanting to leave the victor’s perch. “We came here knowing that if we worked hard, we could join guys who came before us as winners. “I know that I wanted to come into this year with the right mindset and get the job done, Tripodi, whose victories included consecutive one-hit shutouts over St. Joseph’s Prep and Father Judge, said of his commitment, which won him Pitcher of the Year plaudits from the team’s overseers. The friends have always served as avid supporters for each other, and this season epitomized the depth of their duties as positive influences, with the catcher enjoying every whiff Tripodi tallied and the right-handed fireballer reveling each time Nardini produced a big game, such as his 4-for-4 effort in April 23’s defeat of Carroll. While they hope to make plenty of additional memories in chasing parochial, city and state distinction, they also have begun to contemplate the next phase of their lives. “It’s going to be fun to go to college, Nardini said of Gwynedd Mercy University, where Tripodi and shortstop Justin Curtin will also attend. “To be going with Gino is going to be neat; we’ll probably be rooming together, too. The Marconi inhabitants anticipate playing baseball as matriculators, but they emphasized that academics will take precedence, with each having a knack for business. “Baseball is a big part of our friendship, but it doesn’t dominate, Tripodi said. “We just want to see each other succeed. “It’s been a great journey, Nardini, whom Messina billed as “the guy that every team needs because you know what to expect, added. “I’m hoping we leave here as champions again. +(* Contact Managing Editor Joseph Myers at jmyers@southphillyreview.com or ext. 124.
