pring’ll soon be gone, summer’s comin’ on, and I’ma dreamin’ of lotsa summer love, Bobby Rydell sings on “Wildwood Days. And it’s no surprise that Bobby Rydell Boulevard is down here at 11th Street and Moyamensing Avenue — South Philly loves Wildwood, N.J.

And not just Wildwood, but Sea Isle City, Avalon, Atlantic City, Cape May, Margate, Ventnor and Asbury Park, too. As May comes to an end, businesses are polishing chrome, dusting off cash registers and opening windows, and getting ready to welcome the flocks of Philadelphians who frequent the Atlantic Coast’s boardwalks, hotels and rentals. One such business owner is Matty Benigno, a 2600-block-of-South-

17th-Street resident and proprietor of Potito’s Bakery, 1614 W. Ritner St. The native of 18th and Moyamensing Avenue has been going to Wildwood his whole life and now he takes his family, wife Cristina, whose late father Carmen started the corner store operation, and sons Gioacchino, 6, and Matty, 4. “We’ve always loved Wildwood growing up. “Once Cristina and I had our first child, we knew that we were going

to want to go down the Shore there. Now they have a Potito’s Bakery in North Wildwood at the corner of Central and East 17th avenues. “We wanted to follow our customers to the Shore, basically. They do lots of baking for the New Jersey business out of the Girard Estate location, and cart it up every Friday for the time being. There’s onsite baking of breakfast bites like doASS A6=@3 ^OUS ,,

To the Editor: There is a room where women are forced to congregate, and it is not a cheerful place, if anything, it is the complete opposite. The only thing that looms in this room is gloom. I am referring to the infamous, horrifying place where we anxiously await the results of our mammogram. Minutes seem like hours as everyone tries so hard not to show fear but are unable to hide it. Glancing up to look at one another, the only thing that can be felt is dread. Although we are all so different, in this instance, we all have one common goal, the hope of receiving the good news that we are fine and getting out of there as fast as we possibly can! Whatever the situation, whether it be having the technician come out to say he/she has to take more pictures or the doctor smiling saying that we are fine and see you next year, we all must go through the torture of the wait. Although we come from different backgrounds and walks of life, we as women

can journalist said, “Conservatives have sometimes been too quick to excuse police violence. And liberals have sometimes been too quick to excuse rioter violence.â€? Let’s just wash our brain with those words a little. ‌ Being a teen student at a Philadelphia high school, it’s kind of hard for me to imagine what pain or struggle the people 2SPPWS @caaW\] at Baltimore might be going through. But A]cbV >VWZORSZ^VWO I do feel angry when my parents bring out stereotypes against black people and try to put them down. I don’t know what way to go. Should I hate them for what they are doing or should I stay silent? I don’t know. To the Editor: ‌ How? I asked that thousand of times to I overheard some of my African-Amermyself. How “weâ€? as individuals look at ican friends discussing the Baltimore topevents like Baltimore? Do we actually feel ic, and they seem to be really chill with the tension that is passing along, or do we it. One of them said, “If that happened to just act like nothing happened? One of them replied, “Don’t forbeing taken. Nicholas Kristof, an Ameri- get Gucci.â€? Then they all started laughing out loud. I didn’t know what to say. I was speechless. Are they saying those because they are not at that place, or are they just joking around? Were my parents right about black stereotypes and how they Comment at southphillyreview.com/opinion By Corey Carter always steal? All these questions start to accumulate in my mind. I start battling within myself. President Barack Obama has spoken on this matter [at an April 28 press conference], “When individuals get crowbars and start prying open doors to loot, they’re not protesting, they’re not making a statement, they’re stealing. When they burn down a building, they’re committing arson. And they’re destroying and undermining businesses and opportunities in their own communities. That robs jobs and opportunity from people in that area.â€? violent. What shall we do then? How do we really look at events like Baltimore? Are they supposed to teach us some lesson or to dehumanize us? Events like Baltimore happen all around the country but not all of them get as much attention as this one. So what do we do as a nation to stop events like these? Some of my schoolmates were blaming all the black teens that were rioting. They have argued that most of them were teens and were in high schools and didn’t know anything that was going on. They were there because everyone else was there. Was it really because everyone else was there or to stop things like this to happen again and to receive an answer or is it “Baltimore in general? I don’t even know myself and still am questioning. Lots of media coverage was done on behalf of the tragic Baltimore event that has occurred. But do people outside of Baltimore hold any responsibilities? I mean of course media is spreading everything faster than a blink of an eye, but are we in general who live outside of Baltimore getting affected by what happened there? What about the teens who said that they will go to rob places if events like Baltimore occur? What about my parents who are losing trust in the black community day by day? Are incidents like Baltimore dehumanizing us slowly? We want the answers. We don’t want events like Baltimore to happen anymore. No one does! We don’t want injustice but on the other hand, we will not bother with public rage, which causes much damage to the lives of others. We want change in our system. We have peaceful protests and protests that actually look for an answer rather than making others question. Again, “How do we really look at events like Baltimore? BOV[WRcZ 0VcWgO\ A]^V][]`S AQWS\QS :SORS`aVW^ /QORS[g Comment on these letters or topics at southphillyreview.com/opinion/letters.

n May 14, a 12-person jury deemed the aforementioned figures free of culpability on charges that they beat and robbed drug suspects as members of the Philadelphia Police Department’s Narcotics Field Unit. Each individual, including South Philly inhabitants Thomas Liciardello and Brian Reynolds, had faced one count of racketeering conspiracy, with six weeks of testimony looking to label them as intimidators and crooks who collected more than $400,000 from February 2006 to November ’12. A July 30-released indictment detailed accusations that the officers, whose arrest last year prompted Police Commissioner Charles H. Ramsey to suspend them with the intent to dismiss, conspired to intimidate, rob and assault drug dealers, with four such incidents occurring in South Philly. The verdict’s repercussions remain unknown, as dozens of federal civil rights lawsuits against them are in the pipeline and local courts have tossed out around 450 of their former drug cases. Liciardello had faced a mandatory minimum term of seven years in prison, up to life; a fine up to $4.5 million; an $1,800 special assessment; and five years of supervised release, and Reynolds had been staring at a mandatory minimum term of seven years in prison, up to life; a fine up to $2.25 million; a $900 special assessment; and five years of supervised release.

5O[PZW\U eWbV bVSW` ZWdSa Police arrested two men for supposedly robbing a Marconi East man of his casino winnings. Authorities reported to the 2800 block of South Mildred Street just after 5 a.m. Saturday and met with the complainant, learning he had played blackjack at SugarHouse Casino from 11 p.m. until 4:30 a.m., Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. After winning approximately $13,000, he hailed a cab home yet upon exiting the vehicle, he stated that someone pressed a black gun to his head and told him to hit the ground. The aggressor allegedly took his wallet, iPhone 5C and the large sum before fleeing in an SUV. Police used the victim’s account to locate the dark-colored ride and as they approached it, the operator supposedly fled, emptying his pockets as he ran toward the gaming site, Tolliver said. They detained him in a casino bathroom, with the complainant identifying him as the assailant. Through additional investigation, police ascertained the identity of a conspirator and arrested him without incident. They charged 23-year-old North Philly inhabitant Carlos Rodriguez and 26-year-old Drexel Hill dweller Justin Green-Knecht with criminal conspiracy, firearms violations, theft, robbery, possession of an instrument of crime, making terroristic threats, assault and recklessly endangering another person. Rodriguez awaits a June 2 preliminary hearing. Court records did not contain an updated account of Green-Knecht’s status. Authorities, who recovered evidence supposedly discarded by Rodriguez, added the complainant suffered no injuries and that they confiscated a 2005 Blue Nissan Murrano with Pennsylvania tags and an ’05 Toyota Corolla, also bearing Pennsylvania identification.

He described both as black, with the first being 19 or 20 years old; having a dark complexion and a thin build; being clean-shaven; and wearing a black hoodie; and the second as having a medium brown complexion and a thin build; being clean-shaven; wearing a blue hoodie; and toting a firearm. The FBI, the Philadelphia Police Department and the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office on Tuesday announced the charging of a West Oak Lane resident for allegedly robbing a trio of Metro PCS stores, including a Point Breeze operation. A release issued by U.S. Attorney spokeswoman Patricia Hartman notes that authorities are charging Edwin Jimerson with “robbery that interfered with interstate commerce and brandishing, using and carrying a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence. An indictment contends that the 24-year-old robbed three Metro PCS locations in April, with $1,500 going missing April 6 at the 1414 Point Breeze Ave. site. If a conviction occurs, Jimerson will face a minimum of 57 years up to life in prison, as many as five years of supervised release, a possible fine, a $600 special assessment, restitution and forfeiture of the weapon and ammunition.

Smart. “We’re back and forth all summer, says Benigno, a common refrain. “My Shore destination has always been and always will be Wildwood, Jennie Markowicz, a resident of the 2500 block of South Chadwick Street and a fourthgrade teacher at D. Newlin Fell, 900 Oregon Ave., said. “I have been going since I was about 6 or 7. I remember my brother and I wearing our T-shirts making sandcastles and burying each other while my mom sunbathed in coconut oil and my dad sat under the umbrella, in a chair, sneakers on, reading the newspaper. “The best Boardwalk memory was when my dad played the Dime Toss game and got the dime directly on the bull’s-eye — I got a white lion stuffed animal that was twice my size, and felt like the luckiest girl in the world while my dad carried it around the rest of the night. There’s no singular method for shorefrequenting. Many embrace the weekend warrior style of packing up for day trips or weekend-long crashes on friends’ couches, and some locals are lucky enough to have a humble one or two-bedroom home with a deck to use as a year-round escape. April Herring, of the 1900 block of South 11th Street, has had a place in Ocean City since 2009. She and her partner chose it for “affordability and location. It’s an hour and 10 minute ride due east, she explains, and they found a second-floor converted 1950s two-bedroom. “We’ve been going down every weekend since the beginning of April, the education doctorate holder and former University City resident says. “There’s some-

It’s the same place but put all the lights on and it kind of revitalizes you and you wanna stay longer because there’s so much energy, he adds. “It’s a feeling of relaxation, comfort, and home away from home, Markowicz said. “It’s the smell of the saltwater as you drive over the bridge. Most of all, I think it’s that overall Wildwood feeling — there’s no rushing, no worrying, only endless free time to do whatever you choose. It will forever hold a huge spot in my heart, and I will never go one summer without spending time in Wildwood. Herring, whose place in Ocean City is technically in the middle of a dry town, says she doesn’t really go to the shore for food and drink. There’s plenty near her East Passyunk Crossing abode, where she says her immediate surroundings are primarily brick. “I’m in a rowhome – I look out my back door and see my neighbor. If they want dining and drinking they hop to Margate or Sea Isle, and that ice cream stores, sub shops and pizza places have been opening as cars arrive from the west. But as she puts it, “we live off of East Passyunk Avenue, we get our fine dining in here. “It’s a wonderful thing to go on Facebook and post a picture from the beach and within minutes, someone comments and says ‘I’m down here, too, where you at?’ Markowicz says. “You go down as a kid, then as a teenager, then you become an adult and bring your kids down there. t wasn’t even close. As of Wednesday morning, with 98.1 percent precincts reporting, former City Councilman at Large Jim Kenney received nearly 56 percent of the vote with 128,398 votes. Democratic Pennsylvania state senator Anthony Hardy Williams got 60,196 Philadelphians to push his button on election day, netting only 26.15 percent of the mayoral primary vote. Lynne Abraham finished third with under 20,000 votes, and Doug Oliver fell under the five-percent mark. Kenney name-checked his native address in prepared remarks that he deliver at Vie on North Broad Street Tuesday night. “From the 300 block of Cantrell Street to Saint Joe’s Prep to City Council and these last few months on the campaign trail, there are far too many people to thank for getting me to tonight, he said. After 23 years on City Council, voters trusted him above five other candidates, some who had been campaigning and fundraising much longer than Kenney, who announced his resignation from Council at the end of January. The Council at-large race proved contentious, with Derek Green pulling in the most votes (67,625), followed by Blondell Reynolds-Brown (61,852), Allan Domb (56,518) Bill Greenlee (49,964) and Hel-

en Gym (48,343). The five democratic seats elected to City Council this week proved a disappointment for Passyunk Square’s Tom Wyatt, who collected just under 30,000 votes, finishing 12th out of 16 candidates. David Oh and Dennis O’Brien snagged the two minority party at-large seats. One of the most contentious districts, District 2, went to incumbent Councilman Kenyatta Johnson. With 97.14 percent of precincts reporting, Johnson snagged nearly 63 percent of the votes with 14,680 supporters. Developer Ori Feibush pulled in a little more than 37 percent with 8,734 votes. In the 1st District, veteran Councilman Mark Squilla ran unopposed but still got 15,643 votes of confidence. IBEW Local 98’s business manager, John Dougherty, had a different brother succeed this week, too, his blood brother Kevin Dougherty. With 98.1 percent of precincts reporting, Dougherty earned 37.41 percent of the vote for Justice of the PA Supreme Court with almost 140,000 votes. Anne Lazarus finished behind him with 81,164 votes (21.73 percent). The Republican candidate for Supreme Court collected under 9,000 votes. Anthony Clark won the Democratic City Commissioner race with over 30 percent of the vote (74,681 votes), the Republican candidate pulled in 12,000 votes. +(* Comment at southphillyreview.com/news/ briefs.

Fully enamored with the local scene, the 23-year-old is fostering additional affinity for the expanse’s artistic possibilities as Howie in Azuka Theatre’s “Speech & Debate. “It’s a really fun experience, the resident of the 1800 block of Gerritt Street said of participating in the Philadelphia premiere of Stephen Karam’s play. “The content is so appealing, especially because it deals so heavily with making observations, understanding our identities and seeking meaningful relationships. Through Sunday, the Point Breeze inhabitant, along with fellow South Philadelphians Zoe Richards and Rebekah Sharp, is addressing adolescent adversity at Studio X,

1340 S. 13th St. He and his local colleagues are helping Azuka to mark its fourth Virginia and Harvey Kimmel New Professionals Production, which matches budding talents with established figures to further appreciation of both groups’ creative contributions. The Oregonset work finds Black and the others portraying teenagers who must decide not only how much they should trust themselves but also how much credence they should grant others. “We often look for some sort of truth during that period of our lives, the actor, himself not far removed from that inquisitive span, said “During that time, we’re so young and vulnerable and often desperate to make connections. Howie must prove particularly diligent in building bonds, as he moves from Salem to Portland and struggles with loneliness, an aspect that Black deems one of the more challenging components to capture. Howie’s sexuality,

B?<;IJOB;I the other characters’ curiosity and their elders’ questionable behavior infuse the plot with dark comedic qualities, with Black stressing that no matter the depth of one’s despair, the power of friendship can work to counter that pain and offer unmatched reminders of the need to avoid ever taking anyone for granted. “I’s a show where people can look back on their past and be introspective about their value to the world and the influence that others can have on us as we mature, the thespian, who came to the attention of Azuka’s Producing Artistic Director Kevin Glaccum, who is helming the production, through his University of the Arts turn as Wallace “Wag Wallace in “Down Goes the Queen of Virginia, said. “We’re to focus on discovering and contemplating the dynamics of the characters, even down to how they talk, which Karam has a knack for. The script really tackles how much comfort and unease we can feel about letting people into our lives, especially in the Internet era, so that’s really important to focus on as we give more attention to the scope of our interactions. It’s truly provocative material.

BLACK HAS DESIRED to promote such pressing output since his early days in The Centennial State. Thanks to copious theater awareness acquired through his parents, with his father an occasional instructor as he initiated his odyssey, he realized that the stage could stimulate his immersion into the theater world, with music as another influential obsession. “There was nothing that I was really good at but theater, Black said of his childhood, which also included Fourth of July viewings of “1776, the 1972 Tony Award for Best Musical that helped him to understand that people could make a living out of testing their theatrical infatuation. “I tended to gravitate toward classics, golden age stuff, and I still have enthusiasm for older stuff. Though fond of focusing on established creative projects as a connoisseur, Black sought novelty when he considered where he would strengthen his identity as a practitioner, with the University of the Arts beating out the University of Northern Colorado. “I’d say it was meant to happen, he said of matriculating in Center City and gaining quality credits, including “She Loves

Me, through which he worked with Barrymore Award winner and Newbold resident Aaron Cromie. “Now that I’ve started my professional career here, I’d say I’ve never been happier. Black lauded the postsecondary education institution, from which he earned a Bachelor’s in musical theatre with a minor in music composition, for its familial feel, a blessing that made apparent its “full concern for a person’s growth. Having wisely spent his money on the opportunity to experience life in a new state, he hopes to make patrons feel as if they are likewise sagaciously plopping down their cash when watching him perform. “I want to move them, the ambitious individual, whose website notes he brings “a tender, animated yet focused air to his work, said of his approach, which has bred his Azuka debut. “Otherwise, I’m not honoring my commitment to this field or respecting their time. Because of that devotion, Black, a South Philly dweller since November, has scored employment in Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey and New York, with the first member of that quartet to yield his next role in the Rose Valley-situated Hedge-

row Theatre fall production of “Bullshot Crummond. Similar dedication to music has helped him to explore his creative depth more intensely, with this winter’s assistant music director duties for Theatre Horizon’s “Into the Woods a notable success. “I just love, love, love music, Black, a self-taught innovator with a knack for orchestral pieces, said of his equally intense passion, which has led him to make playlists for his characters. “It’s more of a hobby, but it’s one I’m never going to shake. Thoroughly enjoying his time in South Philly, the young man also does not expect the environs to grow old to him and hopes to continue to evolve as an artist within its reaches. “This is a pretty loaded city, Black said. “I’m extremely happy to have had such opportunities in so little time. SPR For tickets, call 215-563-1100, or visit azukatheatre.org. o I’m sitting here in my office, papers strewn carelessly about. The air conditioner is running up my electric bill too early in the season (didn’t I just have my North Face on a few weeks ago?). And, as I have been doing for the last 45 years since the group Chicago recorded the song, I’m trying to figure out the meaning of “25 or 6 to 4. Some folks think that The Beatles hid the secret to the meaning of life in “Revolution 9, but I think if you figure out what the hell “25 or 6 to 4 is all about, you will be able to figure out all of life’s mysteries. And there are a lot of them such as how could the New Jersey governor spend $82,000 on concession food at a football game? Was this before or after he had Lap-Band surgery? Chris Christie might have been able to avoid cutting teachers’ benefits if he had avoided the concessions stand. Speaking of life’s mysteries, I’ve dutifully read Elizabeth Warren’s critique of the Asia trade bill (Trans-Pacific Partnership), President Barack Obama’s rebuttal to Warren and Warren’s re-rebuttal of Obama. I really think you need a Rosetta Stone to figure out any trade bill, but this one takes the proverbial cake (a “proverbial cake is different than real cake because you can’t have it and eat it too). What strikes me is how the criticism of the president’s trade bill almost mirrors the criticism of his proposed nuclear deal with Iran. In both cases, the critics don’t trust that what the president says is in either deal is actually in there. This is really quite striking. If the safeguards that Obama says are in either the trade bill or the Iran deal are not in fact in there, that means either he is deliberately lying about it or needs a course in reading comprehension. Since the president is a constitutional lawyer, one would think we can rule out that he doesn’t understand what it is he is reading (although Donald Trump would dispute that because he believes that Obama is an example of affirmative action run wild). Putting Trump aside (someone please put Trump aside), this leaves us with no other conclusion that Warren and others believe that Obama is lying. Stay with me on this (you might want to listen to “25 or 6 to 4 while pondering this conclusion). Why would the president lie about the contents of the Asia Trade bill or the proposed

N a ] c b V ^ V W Z Z g ` Sd W Se Q ] [ nuclear treaty with Iran? In the case of the Asia Trade bill, is he really out to screw the American labor force just so Michelle Obama can get her sleeveless dresses at 50 percent off the current price? Among Warren’s objections is that it will make it easier for a future president and Congress to weaken financial regulations — for instance, allowing only 51 senate votes instead of 60 to change the bill afterward. But weren’t the Democrats screaming when they controlled the Senate about Republicans using the need for 60 votes to obstruct passage of needed legislation? Why would the president tell us that the proposed nuclear deal prevents Iran from getting the bomb when if Republicans are right, it allows them to get the bomb? What is in it for Obama if Iran gets the bomb? I know he would rather spend an hour in a viper’s nest than share a bagel with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, but don’t you think handing Iran nuclear bombs is a little over the top? It is true that Iran itself rejects Obama’s interpretation of the proposed nuclear deal. The mullahs claim that not only are there no verification inspections allowed, but that Obama is throwing in a couple of cases of Halvah to sweeten the deal (I always liked the marble Halvah when I was a kid). It’s safe to say that the Republicans believe Iranian leaders and not their own president. Their motivation — this might seem a little harsh, but the mullahs didn’t beat them in two straight presidential elections. Of course, it could be that Republican presidential candidate Dr. Ben Carson is right and that Obama is worse than Adolf Hitler. In Carson’s mind, he seems to equate genocide with the horrible thought that Hitler could just as well have subjected six million Jews to Obamacare. The thought must frighten Carson when he thinks that the Allies could have found all those Jews at the end of the war with health care cards in those camps. Laugh if you will at the theory that Obama is intent on destroying our national security (they laughed at songwriter Robert Lamm when he wrote the lyrics to “25 or 6 to 4, and he laughed all the way to his nearest 24-hour service bank). The president’s love of secrecy is a good deal to blame for the controversy. Members of Congress can actually read the trade bill if they go to a classified site (Roswell?) and allow their lips to be sewn together upon leaving so that they can’t leak the details to the public. We don’t want an informed public, do we? Reading a bill before voting on it would be in itself a first for many members of Congress. Meanwhile I’m “sitting cross-legged on the floor, listening to “25 or 6 to 4. +(* Comment at southphillyreview.com/opinion/ cardella.

emorial Day weekend has quickly crept up on us, with cooks craving the occasion as a chance to take to their grills and show off their skills. While outdoor delights will dominate, those interested in a bit of household goodness can look to Mildred Lloyd-Henderson for inspiration. The resident of the 2400 block of Manton Street packs a protein punch with her Stuffed Chicken Breasts recipe, with the cheese offering a fair complement to the fowl. With the addition of numerous spices, the creation will mark the unofficial beginning of summer as an even tastier excuse for delaying ovens’ last hurrah. +(*

Pate forestier ($18 a pound) was a rough pate prepared with pork, chicken and mushrooms. After the ingredients are cooked, they are ground, placed in a terrine lined with fat and baked in the oven, sitting in a water bath. The use of pork added fat to the pate, and I liked the inclusion of mushrooms. It provided some headiness, which mushrooms always impart in any dish. I found the pate a bit on the dry side. Pate campagne ($17.50 a pound) was another rough pate prepared with pork and a mix of seasonings that were also used for the forestier. It was a little dry to my taste. Petit RĂ´ti sells two of my favorite cheeses. Delice de Bourgogne ($16 a pound) is a ripe, smooth, rich in fat cheese from Burgundy, France which people will fall for immediately after their first taste. It is a soft spreadable cheese, so slather it on a slice of baguette or a plain water cracker. Affinois ($18 a pound) is akin to brie. It is not as soft and spreadable as the Delice, but it is one of the finer brie cheeses one can find in America. Petit RĂ´ti is open seven days a week. It offers specials such as platters and sandwiches as well. A few pastries are available as well as a selection of olive oils, jams, preserves and condiments. There are a few tables and chairs outside. I was fortunate to have a jar of cornichon in my fridge along with a selection of olives I always have on hand. I poured myself a glass of wine, made a delicious platter and watched the “Mad Menâ€? finale. Three tips of the toque to Petit RĂ´ti. +(*

lessed with a gregarious ious personality and an acute culinary personality, Koubeil Ben Ayed has enjoyed many fruitful friendships in his 40 years, with Tunisia and the United States each fostering two decades of his journey. Since May 2011, the affable entrepreneur has helmed Al Zaytouna, 906 Christian St., infusing Bella Vista with his penchant for offering Mediterranean magnificence. “There are so many different people here that I feel I’m in the heart of Philadelphia, the resident of 10th and Ritner streets said of his fortune. “I’m able to draw a great crowd and share my enthusiasm for this food with them. The Lower Moyamensing dweller credits his Tunisian upbringing and American employment, including jobs in French restaurants and manager duties for Top Dog in Cherry Hill, N.J. and University City, for his pleasant demeanor, noting his cultured homeland as a fantastic inspiration. A member of a family with restaurant ties, he knew that, like his father, he would one day want his own location. “I was aware that something was missing, Ben Ayed said of mental and financial preparation for becoming a businessman. “I wanted something relatively close to everyone, and I’m thankful this has worked out so well. The owner will mark his site’s fourth anniversary on Memorial Day and fondly reflected on how quickly the span has passed and on how easily patrons have fallen for certain dishes, including the branzino. “It’s the king of the fish, he mused on the import, a constant menu presence. “What’s not to love about such a delicious

creature? The passionate proprietor regularly parts with the branzino very rapidly, as customers love its subtle use of seasoning and the application of lemon juice. He pairs the plated aquatic denizen with fresh salads and always makes sure that the finished products reveal not only his reverence for his heritage but also his respect for his opportunity to expose others to it. “I’ve been in the United States for half of my life, and I love being a TunisianAmerican, the happy husband and father of three said of establishing himself outside his North African roots. “This is my passion and I’m realizing my dream thanks to this area.

uestion: Can a restaurant featuring chicken find success in Philadelphia’s ever-growing, ever-changing restaurant landscape? If you answered “yes,â€? you win the golden drumstick. A number of years ago, Federal Donuts opened in South Philly and served fried chicken, the best donuts in the city, and coffee. There are now several locations, and every time I walk past the Center City store, it is always filled with happy people. Several years ago, Rotisseur opened on 21st Street. I sampled the rotisserie chicken and some sides and found it a fine place for pick-up if I did not feel like cooking. In December, Chef Olivier Deswanmartins caught the rotisserie chicken bug. He opened Petit RĂ´ti in the Washington Square West neighborhood, next door to Zinc. He also owns Caribou CafĂŠ. This seems to be a good idea. Breads are baked and some pates are made at Zinc that are sold at Petit RĂ´ti. The star, of course, is the chicken. A whole large chicken ($19.50), which weighed about four pounds, was cut into eight pieces for easy enjoyment. It was moist, tender, juicy and free of grease. The rotisserie technique allows the fat to drop down onto a pan, but the fat and flavor from the skin keeps the bird quite tasty. Sides are sold by the pound. On the day of my visit, they consisted of zucchini, cabbage, beets and carrots and parsnips. The zucchini looked sad, dry and dreadful. Ditto for the cabbage. Carrots and parsnips are the flavors of fall and would do nothing for my taste buds on an 85-degree day. The roasted beets ($6.50 a pound) appeared promising. They were roasted just right, retaining a bit of toothsome quality I enjoy in beets. I stored them in the fridge to enjoy them cold with the chicken. All they required was a sprinkling of kosher salt and a few grinds of pepper. I toted home a baguette ($3.29) that I simply tore apart and topped it with either pates or cheeses. I purchased three different pates, two of which were prepared at Zinc. A duck liver mousse made with port ($21 a pound) is an essential part of bistro dining in America and throughout France. It was rich and filled with the distinct ducky fatty flavor one finds with top-quality mousse enhanced by the sweetness of port.

oey Gorman likes lauding the wisdom within Jackie Robinson’s assertion that “A life is not important except in the impact it has on others, meaning the students whom the eventual educator will instruct will find before them a champion for enacting positive change. Though he already adores those impending interactions, he cherishes chances to share time with current acquaintances, which he did Saturday at Bill McIntyre’s Shooting Stars New Year’s Brigade, 1931 S. Third St., with loved ones looking to foster the formation of his Losing Is Not An Option foundation, which will offer resources to those who, like the 21-year-old, suffer from a Chiari malformation. “I’ve definitely had moments where I’ve wondered why this has been my experience, the Third-and-Ritner-streets inhabitant said of his nine-year battle with the cerebellum abnormality that has necessitated two surgeries. “However, this is my life for some reason, and that reason might be beyond my understanding now, so I see each day as an opportunity to assist someone. The Whitman dweller ventured to the Pennsport space as the guest of honor for his altruistic notion, with brigade members such as former president Mark Averill and present vice president Jim McCullough and neighborhood figures uniting to generate funds for his brainchild. “He’s the most selfless kid, Averill, of Front Street and Snyder Avenue, said of his cousin, who, following a stellar baseball career at Ss. Neumann-Goretti High School, 1736 S. 10th St., where he captured two Catholic League titles and the 2012 Blue Division MVP, chose to matriculate at Saint Joseph’s University. “He’s been such a fighter, and we know he doesn’t like attention, but we’re giving it to him because his cause is so important. “He’s one of our own, McCullough, of the 100 block of Mercy Street, added of the occasional Mummers Parade presence. “We had to come together to celebrate all that he’s doing. The merry Mummers selected Saturday to coincide with a Hawks’ home game,

with Gorman, already the proud owner of two hits in a Mother’s Day tilt, adding another lasting memory by stroking a sixthinning single in the matchup against Saint Louis University. No matter his output in either game or any other contest, the first baseman and soon-to-be senior counts himself blessed to be a diamond occupant and a humanitarian. “I’ve been through a ton, but I’m not going to whine or complain because I have plenty of people who love me and want for me to succeed, Gorman, who has also undergone two procedures on his dominant left arm because of ulnar nerve complications from his affliction, which incited a spat with aseptic meningitis and an adverse reaction to prescription steroids, said. “There are those who lack that support or who become down on themselves because of their condition. I want my foundation to change their lives. During the baseball portion of Saturday, the young man met a woman with four children contending with Chiari malformations, including a baseball-loving son who had pondered parting with the pastime out of frustration with his situation. Having seen a televised clip on the fledgling foundation, which patriarch Joe

Gorman noted is approaching nonprofit status attainment, the boy and his mother credited the courageous athlete with sustaining his enthusiasm for the sport. “It touched me to know I put a smile on his face, Gorman, whose own countenance shone as McCullough presented him with his framed No. 22 NeumannGoretti jersey and a personalized Losing Is Not An Option bat, said. “We just have to keep persisting. “Each day is a step forward, his father added. “He’s getting back to being himself, and he’s constantly proving that though he’s a terrific baseball player, he’s an even better kid. THE YOUNGER GORMAN learned of the malformation, which the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke describes as a structural defect in the cerebellum, the brain component responsible for one’s balance, during a sinus scan. Beginning at around age 16, he and his kin began to believe he would remain symptom-free through input from medical personnel, but a scary weightlifting session in October ’12, during which he lost feeling in his arms and legs, offered a different prognosis. Only four months

removed from his high school graduation, he found not only his baseball future but also his overall existence teeming with uncertainty. “It’s so easy to fall prey to doubt and sadness, the burgeoning advocate said. “It’s more rewarding, though, to search for answers. Realizing during recovery that his voice could count, Gorman, who as a Saint placed “Losing is not an option underneath his cap, decided to create a foundation, and his initiative, with aid from former classmates, relatives and strangers, has won praise for its timeliness and tenderness. The mastermind, who has concluded therapy at Magee Rehabilitation Hospital, 1500 S. Columbus Blvd., has also striven to contribute to his club, and, with clearance to perform as much as he can tolerate, made his return this season, with Saturday marking the end of the campaign. “It’s so great to be back in any capacity, Gorman, who even competed in the team’s Tough Man Week, said. “I have more eligibility since this was only my first year playing, so I’m excited about coming back. His joy kept him awake the night before the finale, with the base hit being the result of complete concentration and confidence. The Hawks dropped the duel, preventing a storybook ending, but Gorman, like all practitioners of patience, knows the value of setbacks. “I didn’t want to sit out another year, the tireless victor, who will require a fifth surgery for avascular necrosis in his left shoulder and who confessed to feeling frequent joint pain and occasional headaches, said. “I’ve been very blessed in my life, and I definitely don’t want for anyone to see me as the kid who can’t catch a break. I’m going to become stronger, and that will help me to inspire others to do the same. SPR For more information, visit gofundme. com/joeygorman, or e-mail gorm50an@ aol.com.
