We asked visitors of the South Philly Review website to share their fondest memories of the people and places that are no longer part of the community. Here are some of the responses as they appear on the South Philly Review website. “Thinking about my Father-in-law Rocky Fantazzi and how many boys and girls he help[ed] become great man and women I saw Bobby Rydell stop his show to tell the audience how Rocky affected his life, same was true about Fabian, and Frankie Avalon. This was just a few who

came to the Boys Club at 13th and Shunk. I still stay in touch with some of the men who were there when I worked for Rocky in the 60’s I write about it in my book There are no short cuts. Rocky has been dead for over 20 years. 3`\WS 0]\] dWO a]cbV^VWZZg`SdWSe Q][

“What comes to mind for me is the Colonial Theater. When I was a young boy we didn’t have much and my dad was the sole bread winner. When he came home from work he was usually beat from the travel back and forth as well as the job itself. Needless to say any movies or time together outside the house were few and far between. I’ve been to the Colonial plenty of times with friends, but there was this one time my dad, my older brother Mike, his friend Brian and myself went to see the “Godfather Part 2.â€? It was the only time I ever sat with him to watch a movie in a theater, and he was so excited to be there. I nearly crapped myself when young Vito Corleone’s mother got blown away with a shotgun in the beginning, and my dad put his arm around me to comfort me. It’s memories like that to this day I relive every time I drive past where the Colonial used to be and make me thankful that I spent that day with him now that he’s been gone.â€? @]P 2¸3[WZW] A` dWO a]cbV^VWZZg`SdWSe Q][

ccording to a Philadelphia Police Departmentissue Special Victims Unit bulletin, the masked offender entered a home on the 1800 block of South Rosewood Street Ac`dSWZZO\QS ^V]b] at 5:40 a.m. Monday and demanded that the occupant give him money. She parted with $10 before the sexual assault, with the criminal leaving with a set of keys and a roommate’s identification card. At a Tuesday news conference, authorities revealed the aggressor wore dark clothing and red or orange gloves, describing him as black, in his late 20s or early 30s, having a medium build and standing 5-foot-8 to 5-foot-9. They added he drove off with her car only to abandon it a few blocks from the scene of the crime. Special Victims Unit Capt. John Darby said that the case seems similar to a March 26 incident on the 1700 block of South Chadwick Street in which a man forced two children into a room and proceeded to rape their mother. Authorities released a sketch of that man, who also wore red gloves. Because of the mask, the more recent victim could not comment on his facial features. Darby also noted that neither case featured any sign of forced entry. Law enforcement officials are hoping to collar two women who robbed a Pennsport beauty supply store. At 11:45 a.m. May 19, the at- Ac`dSWZZO\QS ^V]b] large females entered CosmoProf, 1100 S. Columbus Blvd., and selected flat iron curlers from a shelf. Attempting to leave the location without paying, they encountered a woman, who, upon trying to stop them, suffered a blast from a pepper spray-producing device. After incapacitating the uninjured complainant, they fled in a white model Ford SUV that witnesses last saw heading west on Washington Avenue toward Front Street. Call South Detectives Division Det. A woman suffered a foreheadsituated hematoma in South of South Friday. At 12:59 a.m., police learned Ac`dSWZZO\QS ^V]b] from the victim that she had been entering a home on the 2200 block of Pemberton Street when a unknown male approached her from behind and pulled on her purse, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. When she faced him, he slammed her face on the front door, leading to the hematoma. He continued to pull on the holder until the strap broke, leading him to flee the area eastbound on Pemberton Street. “she’s a tough cookie. She took a fall at her previous one-bedroom apartment and, to the amazement of her doctors and children, didn’t break a bone or bleed. On her fall, where her walker hit her head, they said her doctor reported “No one will believe this. The Lower Moyamensing resident has 11 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and six great, great grandchildren. She waved her hand and said “I got so many! As the band played “Happy Birthday and Nutter cut a cake that spelled out “1 0 0, Armentani tapped time on the yellow tablecloth. “Our centenarians, what a great, great group of people, Nutter said before he visited each centenarian for a hug, kiss and photo opportunity. “I hope to come to this luncheon one day myself, but I can wait, he joked, before he rattled off a few facts: Theodore Roosevelt was the president at the time of many of these centenarians’ births, and Oklahoma had just become a state in our Union. The Centenarian celebration media information was full of fun facts: Gertrude Weaver, 116, of Arkansas is the world’s oldest verified living human; according to the U.S. Census Bureau, there are more than 53,000 centenarians in the United States; the European 2015 Aging Report says the life expectancy of the world’s population ranges from 79 to 85 for men and 83 to 89 for women; and the longest known lifespan of any human belongs to France’s Jeanne Calment, who died at 122 in 1997. “She loves him! Testa said of the mayor and riffed on Nutter’s point that this was before Facebook and cell phones: “There shouldn’t be none of that now! The sisters said Armentani stays busy around the house, too. “She has to dry every dish [after dinner], one said. The other said “she has to fold all my clothes from the dryer. +(*

ome fun facts: there are 174 Philadelphians turning 100 this year; 506 centenarians in Philly; and 5,140 centenarians in Pennsylvania. More than 100 such figures were scheduled to attend Mayor Michael Nutter’s 15th Annual Centenarian Celebration at The Sheet Metal Workers Union Hall, 1301 S. Columbus Blvd., May 21. Stylized as “Saluting Centenarians: A Celebration for the Ages, eligible attendees need to be a century-old or turning 100 in 2015. This celebration was initiated as part of National Older Americans Month in ’01, and it was part of the City’s efforts to mark the anniversary of the historic century-old City Hall. “There are very few centenarian celebrations of this magnitude, in which a city recognizes the achievements and lives of its residents, Nutter said in a statement to the press. “My administration has been committed to providing services so that every citizen, especially our seniors, can lead high-quality, independent lives. These amazing seniors are among the oldest people in the world, and have been part of the backbone of our communities, working and raising families in Philadelphia. Plenty of South Philadelphians were in attendance. Celestine Zambino, of the 2400 block of South Hutchinson Street, is 103 and will turn 104 in September. She lived at 18th and Wolf streets for years but recently and reluctantly moved in with her daughter, Vickie Cecchini. She didn’t have much of her hearing capacity, so her offspring spoke as a conduit. Cecchini said the house she grew up in in Marconi was “always jumpin’ and always full of food

book about her life and the struggles she went through, you know, what she went through with money. Speaking of her childhood, Cecchini said “those days were better. It was slower, nicer. which had 954 seats, was a great place to, well as one responder put it, to cut class just to go to see a movie with her friends!

Fante-Leone Pool Montrose and South Darien streets With nearly 100 years of history associated with its name, this popular pool area — renamed in 1990 to honor local leaders Dominic Fante and Anthony Leone — this built-in-1905 recreation space for immigrant workers was once considered the oldest public pool in the city. Housing now sits in its place.

Broadway Theatre Broad Street and Snyder Avenue The centenarians profiled in this issue are among the few who were around when this former vaudeville theatre with 2,183 seats opened its doors in 1913. These days, the same space serves as a parking lot for Walgreens. Colonial Theatre 1025-1031 W. Moyamensing Ave. Remember the days of double features and $2 movie tickets (and even cheaper way back in the day)? The Colonial,

Moyamensing Prison 10th and Reed streets Name the famous author/poet who spent one night here in 1849? Edgar Allan Poe. The charge: public drunkenness. The food options have gotten just a tad better since the building was demolished, as an Acme supermarket now sits in its place.

Palumbo Restaurant Ninth and Catharine streets As a tribute to the neighborhood’s booming food scene, it’s only fitting that a restaurant makes the list. Palumbo’s Restaurant was known as a showplace for Italian food, movie stars and entertainers. The A-listers included Frank Sina-

Philadelphia Naval Shipyard 4747 S. Broad St. Your ship is in. This site was quite busy during the World War II era with some 40,000 employees. The task: building more than 50 ships and repairing another 500-plus. While some old, decommissioned ships still sit on the water, the location is now home to completely different development — a modern business community housing company headquarters for GlaxoSmithKline, Urban Outfitters and Tasty Baking Co. Philadelphia Quartermaster Depot 2724 S. 20th St. The Quartermaster Depot found a spot on the National Register of Historic Places, and for good reason — it was the third federal facility in the nation at its time. Some may not be aware of this little tidbit: it provided the outfitting for the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Sitting in its place these days is a commercial strip mall that includes the likes of BJ’s Wholesale Club, Home Depot and others.

The Spectrum 3601 S. Broad St. The names on the building may have changed several times as a result of bank mergers and acquisitions, but the storyline remained the same: It was a great place to enjoy a Flyers or Sixers game, as well as a who’s who list of entertainers that included Billy Joel, Pink Floyd, Elvis, The Grateful Dead and Bruce Springsteen. And just to think, two years before the Spectrum met the wrecking ball, Philadelphia saw its last sports championship. Ever since the Spectrum came crumbling down, the city of Brotherly love has not seen one since ‌ Superstitious? Veterans Stadium 3501 S. Broad St. It seems just about everybody has a story or two to share about the building simply known as “The Vet.â€? The Phillies and Eagles called it home during the good times and bad — including that rare 1980 Word Series title. For some, it was a place to experience that first professional sporting event with Dad. It may not have earned high praises for its design, but the memories live on. +(* -By Review Editor Bill Gelman and Intern Michael Carey Comment features.

emember the days .... Those three words set a classic scene for what South Philadelphia used to be — not that there is anything wrong with how it is today. Yes, that out-with-theold, in-with-the-new mentality sets the tone for a booming development picture, but this week’s issue is paying homage to nostalgia — remembering those gems of South Philly’s storied past. Forget about Elvis doing his shake, rattle and roll inside the Philadelphia Spectrum. The trivia question of what was the name of the building the Philadelphia Flyers played in when they won their two Stanley Cup titles will roll off the tongue a lot more quickly — it’s not like those championship moments happen all the time around here. Time to brush the cheap shots aside as we take a brief look back at 10 South Philly places that have left a lasting impression in the minds of residents young and old. Please keep in mind there are many, many more deserving to be on this list, but like David Letterman’s Top-10 lists, space and time are limited.

JFK Stadium 3601 S. Broad St. This former landmark located at the Southern tip of Broad Street enjoyed its moment in the international spotlight as one of two sites for 1985’s Live Aid that raised funds for famine relief in Ethiopia. One-hundred-thousand people screamed and cheered, with Ozzy Osbourne, Madonna, Led Zeppelin and others performing. That was only one night. But the show goes on, as the Wells Fargo Center has filled its space.

tra, Tony Bennett and Dean Martin. Even former Mayor Frank Rizzo was known to frequent the spot. In an unHollywood-like ending, Palumbo’s story came to a close in 1994, as the building burned down.

here are so many famous people who once called South Philadelphia home that the list would keep going and going and ... You get the point. Many are fortunate to be with us still today while others have passed on. Continuing with the nostalgic them of this week’s issue, here is a handful of local faces deserving of a repeat appearance on the pages of the South Philly Review. There are those like Marian Anderson, the South of South native who was the first African-American to perform at New York’s Metropolitan Opera in 1935 and the White House a year later, and Mario Lanza, the world-famous tenor from the 600 block of Christian Street, that automatically jump to the top of South Philly’s most famous list. Three words: The Rat Pack. Do we need to say more? Joey Bishop, who died in 2007, used to hang around with the in-crowd: Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., Dean Martin and Peter Lawford. The man born Joseph Abraham Gottlieb and native of the 300 block of Snyder Avenue also enjoyed his moment in the spotlight as the host of “The Joey Bishop Show. He also appeared in the original “Ocean’s 11 long before the likes of George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Matt Damon even thought about becoming Hollywood A-listers. Former comedian David Brenner is one of the more recent famous faces to join this wish-they-werestill-here crowd. The product of the 1400 block of South Fourth Street owns the mark for most appearances on the “The Tonight Show by a South Philadelphia celebrity with 158. He also has an Emmy Award to his name. He passed away last year at the age of 78 from an undisclosed form of cancer. Buddy DeFranco, a jazz clarinet player, is another one of the ’14 additions to the list. He performed with the likes of Sinatra and Billie Holiday, among others.

This member of the American Jazz Hall of Fame traveled the world. One of his other claims to fame included serving as the band leader of the Glenn Miller Orches-

tra. Angelo Dundee, a member of the International Boxing Hall of Fame, is remembered as one of the most respected trainers in the history of the fight game. Want proof? Just look at the list of names —15 of them to be exact — that he guided to world championship prestige. There is none bigger than Muhammad Ali. Larry Fine AKA Louis Feinberg put his name on the Hollywood map and later Walk of Fame for well, being funny. He is of course best known as one of “The Three Stooges joining Curly and Moe. Yes, they even tried to do the Hollywood remake in 2012, but the trio of Sean Hayes, Will Sasso and Chris Diamantopoulos failed to duplicate the act. The old neighborhood has not forgotten about Larry as a sign reading “Birthplace of Larry Fine sits at Third and South streets. OK. Frank Rizzo might not have the national or international following like some of the other prestigious names on this list, but this man is considered one of the most popular figures in the City of Brotherly Love’s proud history. This native of the 2300 block of South Rosewood Street served as Philadelphia police commissioner from 1967 to ’71 and mayor from ’72 to’80. Sherman Hemsley, the native of 22nd of Christian Streets better known as the television icon George Jefferson, Jack Klugman, who made the character Oscar Madison Emmy-worthy long before Matthew Perry was ever considered for the role, deserve mentions on this small sampling of gone but not forgotten list of South Philadelphians. -By Review Editor Bill Gelman and Intern Charles Ivey Comment at southphillyreview.com/news/features.

pon commencing his Philadelphia crusade as a Dorothy Haas Acting Apprenticeship participant for the Walnut Street Theatre, Langston Darby yearned to create connections with established performers, figuring their focus could help him to forge more fascination for the stage. Six years into his local journey, the resident of the 1900 block of Latona Street has come to count many heavy hitters as colleagues and has begun to command consideration as one such colossal presence, with his starring turn in the playhouse’s “Schoolhouse Rock Live! JR. marking his fourth 2015 endeavor. “It was definitely an education to come to this city, the 28-year-old Mississippi native said of propelling

his professional aspirations here. “I find there’s so much energy within the community, so I’m looking to share that with my peers and audiences. Beginning tomorrow and lasting through June 6, the Point Breeze inhabitant will be capping the Walnut Street Theatre for Kids season slate by portraying a timid teacher who is facing his first day of instruction. The show, which includes tunes from the Emmy Award-winning series “Schoolhouse Rock, finds him interacting with characters from the vastly popular brainchild to build his confidence, with art imitating life for Darby, who as a Walnut teaching artist looks to endow youths with added enthusiasm. “I’d say, of late, that I have a tendency toward intensity, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to refuse something as wonderful as this, he said of enhancing his relationship with the entity, for whom he appeared in

this winter’s “The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fair(l)y (stoopid) Tales. “For whatever audition or piece that I do, I bring in what I hope will convey my character’s identity best, so with this one, I’m trying to accentuate that belief we should all foster that learning could be and should be very fun. Darby noted gathering lessons through theater has proven particularly pivotal to him, as his stage-based existence has bred deeper comprehension of his feelings and goals, with the latter being absent of any hubristic aims. “I’m definitely not done becoming an actor, as I still need to connect many dots, he said. “What I do know is that I’m not gunning to be famous. I wish to be someone who works consistently and becomes involved with many great projects and even greater people. AS A MAGNOLIA State dweller, Darby pondered a few careers, with life as a chef or a police officer among the chief vocations. Theater came along as a trial-anderror pursuit, with his experimentation rendering all other possibilities futile but not without a period of doubt.

“I became involved with theater, but I considered giving it up after some time, he confessed of pangs that ceased when he enrolled at the Mississippi School of the Arts, from which he became a member of the inaugural graduating class. “I needed a bit of grooming to expose me to the potential that the world could offer. The Brookhaven-situated high school infused Darby with a heightened sense of purpose and proficiently prepared him for his studies at the University of Southern Mississippi. An excellent complement to his earlier training, his college tutelage blessed him with even more gumption, leading to involvement with the Southeastern Theatre Conference and participation in a New York showcase. A Kentucky outfit courted him based on his evolving prowess, but, believing in the long-term possibilities offered through a life in Philadelphia, Darby chose the Walnut Street Theatre. “I’ve loved that it’s been such a big part of who I’ve become as an actor, the grateful and gregarious individual said of his affiliation with the 206-year-old facility. “It’s been such a help in getting me out in the field, and now I’ve reached the point

where I want to fathom even more of who I am as a theater practitioner. Darby has used his penchant for provocative and light material to bear bonds with, among others, EgoPo Classic Theater, whom East Passyunk Crossing denizen Lane Savadove advances as artistic director and which last month featured him in “The Hairy Ape, the Idiopathic Ridiculopathy Consortium, which enlists Bella Vista resident Tina Brock to bolster its Absurdism glorification as producing artistic director and which involved him in February’s “Misalliance, and ComedySportz Philadelphia, through whom he interacts with creative behemoths such as the Passyunk Square-situated husband-wife team of Scott Greer and Jennifer Childs. He prides himself on being a theatrical chameleon not only for its potential boost to his bank account but also because of its ability to sustain the school of thought that deems theater a playground for those enamored with novelty. “In South Philly alone, there are so many amazing people coming up with great stuff, and that’s inspirational, Darby, with self-production dreams, said of the environs he has also enjoyed as a Dick-

inson Square West dweller. “As I look for roles, I know I’m going to have to go to a different crayon box to find just what I need to make a difference. That’s what a performer is supposed to be able to do, but it’s especially interesting to do when it’s for a juicy production. “Schoolhouse Rock Live! JR., with five scheduled performances, will certainly stand out as a delight for Darby, who noted that his character, Tom, reminds viewers that newness need not be intimidating if people anticipate the probable rewards. He has begun to adopt the same stance, as late this summer, he will head to New York to join the Atlantic Acting School, a boon whose Full-Time Conservatory could occupy him for up to two-and-a-half years. “I was looking for a summer intensive and got my wish and then some, he remarked. “Like any other opportunity, I want to maximize it. SPR For tickets, call 215-574-3550, or visit walnutstreettheatre.org. N a ] c b V ^ V W Z Z g ` Sd W Se Q ] [ ing. Our driver “Jeep (I’m not sure whether he was named after the brand of automobile he was driving or if the whole thing was just a happy coincidence) suggested that we stop on our way at a family grocery store where he was certain we could find Duke’s (by this time, I was getting a bit frustrated and was thinking about getting a jar of Hellmann’s back home and changing the name on the label). The Family Grocery store is a chain that has taken over some of the local Piggly Wigglys, a fact that has raised the ire of the proud locals in the area, some of whom refuse to shop at Family. Hampered not by local pride, Fran ran into the grocery store and moments later came out with two 32-ounce jars of Duke’s Mayo. I think the guy in Family saw her coming and claimed that it was the only size of Duke’s on his shelf. A word is in order about the origins of Duke’s Mayo. Sometime in Greenville, S.C. in 1917, a southern gentlewoman by the name of Eugenia created Duke’s Mayo from a family recipe. I had an aunt by the name of Eugenia and though we never called Aunt Jenny by that name, I felt a sudden connection with Duke’s. A supposedly objective food critic on Duke’s Website claims that their mayo is more acidic and therefore is a more zesty complement to sandwiches. The company also claims that they use more egg yolks than their competitors, and unlike the competition, never adds sugar to their ingredients. Why, Duke’s is practically considered a health food down South (that’s my own observation). As Fran packed our suitcases for our departure home (I usually assume a position of casual indifference during this process), she realized that two 32-ounce jars of Duke’s were not going to fit into our suitcases. We would have to put the mayo in our carry-on bags, divided equally between the two of us. I am not ashamed to admit that as we lugged our carry-ons toward airport security, I uttered a few profanities not usually associated with Duke’s. Being over 75, I no longer have to remove my shoes at airport security, a fact about which I have distinctly mixed feelings. We separated to have our carry-ons checked. I heard the warning signal go off where my wife stood perplexed at the same time the signal went off and stopped me from going through. Search of our bags revealed Duke’s Mayo as the culprit (apparently someone can hide a bomb in this stuff). We watched forlornly as the mayo was confiscated like a kilo of heroin. It was later when we were back home that I discovered one can order Duke’s Mayo online at Amazon with free shipping, courtesy of our Prime membership. The wonder of technology. SPR

t all began innocently enough on the upper deck of our social club one warm summer night a year ago. My wife, Fran, was engaged in a conversation about mayonnaise with a couple of her southern friends. If you are thinking mayo is a strange subject for a conversation, you have not been to our outdoor swimsocial club. For instance, one evening, the conversation at our table consisted of reminiscing about that night years ago when one very liberal lady decided that the other women at the club needed to see firsthand what pornographic films were all about. She brought a copy of Marilyn Chambers “Behind The Green Door to the club and had it projected onto a blank wall on the upper deck, which is, by the way, for adults only. The only problem was that as Chambers got “busy, the movie could be seen on the street below. After traffic was backed up for blocks by curiosity seekers driving by, the police came and explained that the club’s lesson in ’70s porno had come to an end. Anyway, I digress, back to the mayo. Our friends, one from Kentucky and the other from North Carolina, were lovingly looking back at their days in the South when Duke’s Mayo ruled and Hellmann’s mayonnaise was a dirty word. Flash forward to a month ago when my wife and I visited Charleston, S.C., and Savannah, Ga. Fran decided that it would be a cute idea to bring back a couple of jars of Duke’s Mayo for our friends. It should be noted that neither Fran nor I have ever tasted Duke’s Mayo. In fact, with our being Italian and from South Philadelphia, mayo is not at the top of our list of condiments. In our circle of friends, someone ordering mayo instead of oil on a hoagie is considered reason enough to report him or her to the NSA as possible subversives. Our quest to find Duke’s Mayo did not prove as easy as we thought. We spent the better part of four days in Charleston trying to find the stuff and couldn’t find any evidence that Duke’s even existed. Fran mentioned our frustration to the bartender at our hotel who suggested that we were searching for Duke’s in gourmet food stores when in reality, it was the choice of the working class and could readily be found in any plain old grocery store. Comment at southphillyreview.com/opinion/ We were headed for Savannah the next morn- cardella.

seasoned just right and added to the single serving cast-iron skillet. Some Parmesan cheese was added for a slightly salty flavor and texture along with a broth made with Creole seasoning. It was a fine idea to cook and serve this dish in cast iron, as the offering retained its heat. Rotisserie chicken salad ($15) was another surprise. A mound of spicy baby arugula tossed in Dijon vinaigrette served as a bed for one half roasted young chicken. The leg and thigh meat were juicy and tender, but the breast meat was a little dry. Wines by the glass are moderately priced. A New Zealand sauvignon blanc ($7) married well with my soup and shrimp and grits while a glass of malbec ($8) was a fine choice for the chicken salad. I liked that the wines are served in pretty juice glasses. Service went smoothly and even though it was a weekday, La Colombe was doing a brisk business. Home baked breads and desserts are on offer. I took home a fine baguette ($3), a large vanilla sugar cookie ($1) and a chocolate one as well. The baguette had a firm crisp crust, but the cookies were a little too sweet to my taste. A bag of their exceptional coffee is also available for purchase. Drip style coffee pots are for sale, too. La Colombe is open for breakfast, lunch, brunch and dinner. It also has a Happy Hour on weekdays from 5 to 7 p.m. Three-and-a-half tips of the toque to La Colombe. +(*

obby Flay, Michael Symon, Alex Guarnaschelli and Bill Joerger share something in common: They all appeared on the recently completed season of the Food Network’s “All-Star Academy. Three of the names on this list are Food Network personalities who have earned the prestigious culinary title of Iron Chef. The last of the foursome is a Northeast Philadelphia resident who also happens to be a firefighter at Engine 49, 2600 S. 13th St. He made it to the final eight of the previously mentioned show. He also previously tried out for a season of FOX’s “Master Chef in which he made the top100. Where does this passion for cooking come from? “It started out with cooking for my siblings when I was younger, and it kind of grew from there, the 33-year-old said. But his passion for these reality cooking shows seemed to develop out of an unfortunate situation — open heart surgery. He had the procedure, which kept him laid up for several months, four years ago. “I was watching these shows and I said ‘I can do that,’ Joerger recalled. His Food Network fame may have come to an end, but he is still considered a superstar chef among his fellow Philadelphia firefighters. Joerger’s peers at Engine 49 have taken a serious liking to having an inhouse chef, as they anxiously await what creative dish he will put together next. On a recent Thursday, he prepared French dip sandwiches with a garlic and horseradish sauce and pickled red cabbage. “I love to cook, but you have to be open to trying things, he said. But being a firefighter also comes with its share of tough-to-deal-with moments. One that he will never forget is the 2013 incident in which his station was called to pull firefighter Michael Goodwin of Ladder 27, 414-16 Snyder Ave., from a fatal blaze. “It is probably the hardest thing I have ever had to deal with in my career, Joerger recalled. These days, he remains ready to answer that next call. When he is not putting out fires, he answers his other calling. The Philadelphia Firehouse stations are putting together a cookbook, with a yet-tobe-announced release date. Joerger is contributing four recipes, including the crab chowder offering that appears on this page. Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., he

is participating in the Steak-umm Firehouse Challenge Chili Dog Chowdown. A $5 donation will get supporters two Steak-umms beef chili cheese dogs and a bag of chips. All proceeds will benefit the National Fallen Firefighter Foundation. Call 215-685-1783 to place an order.

In a large pot, sweat down the onions, peppers and carrots in the butter until the onions and peppers are tender (carrots will still be al dente). Add the seafood stock to the onions, peppers and carrots. Bring to a simmer, then add the roasted corn and fennel. Add the heavy cream. Add the peeled and cubed potatoes to the chowder. Add the crab legs to the chowder, keeping about a 1/4 cup of the crab aside for plating. Simmer the chowder until the potatoes are tender. If needed, add salt and pepper, to taste. If the chowder is too thin, whisk in flour until desired thickness is reached. If chowder is too thick, add milk until desired thickness is reached. have always enjoyed a cup of La Colombe’s rich dark roast coffee. Many restaurants have been serving it ever since the local company opened its first cafÊ steps from Rittenhouse Square a number of years ago. I was not surprised when La Colombe chose Fishtown for its first restaurant. It has become a destination venue for brunch, lunch, dinner and shopping. Sunday brunch is continuously bustling. There can be long waits for a table. So on a cold, drizzly spring day, I decided it was the best time to eat lunch at this breathtaking and beautiful space. Natural brick, highly polished woods, copper and looming ceilings make La Colombe a casual place that is perfect for families. After ordering at the counter, customers find a table as the waitstaff brings out the meal. Since it was an unusually chilly day, I hoped soup would be on the menu. The soup of the day ($7) was a creamy spring asparagus prepared with homemade stock, bite-size bits of fresh perfectly cooked asparagus and radishes. It was finished with a drizzle of extra-virgin olive oil. The most unusual dish of the day was onion soup on toast ($9). Think of the ingredients used in the preparation of French onion soup and instead of serving it in a bowl filled with broth, the ingredients wind up on toasted focaccia. When onions caramelize properly, they take on a delicious sweet flavor. Three square slices of toasted focaccia served as the base for this dish. The onion mixture, including a tiny bit of broth, was placed on the bread and topped with Gruyere and fresh herbs. It spent a few minutes in the oven so the cheese would melt. It was heaven on toast. Many restaurants are offering shrimp and grits, but a number of them cannot get it right. La Colombe’s version ($13) is offered among the skillet dishes. I did not know what to expect. I assumed it would be cooked in a skillet and served in a bowl. The creamy stoneground grits were perfectly prepared with lots of butter and seasonings. They retained a bit of bite necessary for the success of shrimp and grits. About five medium shrimp were

he baseball team at Ss. NeumannGoretti High School, 1736 S. 10th St., always fields fierce competitors, so when the club prepared for its seventh-inning cuts Saturday, senior second baseman Vinny Vaccone fully expected to lead the charge to secure the program’s fifth league plaque in seven seasons. The Saints, trailing 3-0 when entering the frame, displayed their customary commitment to the pursuit of victory by notching two runs, succumbing to Archbishop Wood High School at Immaculata University. “Our mindset is that we never want to lose no matter the situation, so we definitely wanted to win such a big game, Vaccone, of the 1200 block of Wolf Street, said of the comeback bid. “We wanted to do it for each other and came very close. Facing league MVP Joey Lancellotti, who no-hit the East Passyunk Crossingbased bunch April 6, the First-Team AllCatholic fell in an 0-2 hole but singled up the middle in the decisive half-inning, with his teammates certainly hoping for his arrival at home plate and their own dates with the dish. Juniors Nick D’Amore and Brian Verratti incited visions of an affluent afternoon by stroking an RBI double and triple, respectively, setting the stage for shortstop Justin Curtin to play the potential hero for the visitors. “It still feels as if it didn’t happen, third baseman D’Amore said Tuesday of his fellow infielder’s game-ending line drive double play. “It’s pretty upsetting to lose that way after it seemed we were going to take the lead. The Saints, who yesterday played MaST Charter for the District 12 2A title in a matchup that ended after press time, had advanced to the championship duel with 6-5 and 12-2 wins over Archbishop Carroll and St. Joe’s Prep, earning a chance to pay back one of their three regular season conquerors. “Revenge really wasn’t on our mind,

Lower Moyamensing’s Vaccone said of the weekend contest. “We’re always thinking that we want a victory no matter who the opponent is. “We’ve been able to have success because we always believe we’re the best, Verratti, of the 2800 block of South 16th Street, said. “The effort was definitely there, so we’re upset that we couldn’t bring back another championship, but there’s still plenty to play for. ENTERING THE CHESTER County-situated finale 16-3, the Saints sent southpaw Pat Doudican to the hill. The Vikings tallied a pair of runs in the second and what proved to be the decisive score in the third, with Lancellotti again handcuffing the locals,

who, entering the seventh, had only a hit from senior catcher and First-Team league honoree Tommy Nardini to show for their hard work. “Title games are big tests, Vaccone said of squaring off against the top-seeded Bucks County-based squad. “So going into the seventh, we not only wanted to make a push, we wanted to steal the momentum. In making their run to last year’s title, the Saints, with the Catholic League using a double-elimination format, won five must-win-or-go-home contests, trouncing Roman Catholic High School in a twogame set to claim the prize. With enhanced understanding of their leadership roles, Vaccone, Verratti and D’Amore knew that

no matter the score as they headed to the plate in the fateful final frame, they would find themselves emphasizing tenacity and team camaraderie. “All year long, we fed off the energy that comes from being a close group of guys, Vaccone, set to matriculate at Mercer County Community College, said. “That was the perfect place for it all to come together. “The confidence that we have is pretty contagious, Verratti, a First-Team center fielder, said of bravely facing the threerun deficit. “There was no reason to think we wouldn’t get it done against Wood. Curtin’s connection, which Vaccone described as the hardest hit ball of the session, landed in the glove of the second baseman, whose throw to first erased senior right fielder Bay To, whom Lancellotti had hit. Their chance at repeating denied, the Saints have allowed themselves time to process the disappointment but will not dwell on it, especially with the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association tournament commencing Monday at Richie Ashburn Field, 20th Street and Pattison Avenue. “We still have a winning mentality, D’Amore, of the 2400 block of South Hicks Street, said of the state tournament, which the Saints are certainly looking to claim after last year’s semifinal setback. “It’s time to step it up. “We have so many seniors this year, Vaccone said of the nine figures who will graduate June 5. “Because of that and so many other factors, we want to move on from this loss and bring a state championship to this school. Verratti, who will assume an even greater role next season, feels an unforgettable state tournament showing will prepare him, D’Amore and the rest of the cast for a memorable 2016 slate. “There’s never a time to lower our intensity, the Marconi inhabitant said. “That’s not our style. +(* Contact Managing Editor Joseph Myers at jmyers@southphillyreview.com or ext. 124. BLESSED MOTHER FOR PRAYER ANSWERED

MEDICAL/HEALTH

FREE

215-732-5339

NOVENA TO THE HOLY SPIRIT Holy Spirit, You who solve all problems, light all roads, so that I can attain my goal. You gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances of my life You are with me. I want in this short prayer to thank You for all things as You confirm once again that I never want to be separated from You even in spite of all material illusions. I wish to be with You in eternal glory. Thank You for your mercy towards me and mine. This prayer must be said for three days and after three days the favor will be granted. The prayer must be published immediately.
