To the Editor: I love all things associated with nostalgia, and I always have, going to thrift stores long before they became the popular consignment shops of today. I feel that it gives me a chance to visit past eras of fashion and music that only a throwback like myself could appreciate. Vintage memorabilia has always been very interesting to me, and I seem to be partial to the 1940s and ’50s because the time seemed simpler and the styles were very classy. I love looking at old time photos and watching documentaries of the past to witness how every generation has evolved, but I grew up in the crazy phase of disco, which is a back-in-the-day era

that seems to be staying quite current. I must admit that I am in somewhat of a time warp where the ’70s are concerned, so I do love seeing the fringe vests, bell bottoms and platform shoes, and I’m sure it is only a matter of time before we see the boombox blaring once again, big hair and Members Only jackets making a long-awaited comeback. Even though I feel that some things are better left in the past, with the concept of history repeating itself, any form of nostalgia, no matter how silly it may seem, is feasible. But may I please state for the record, to the many who listen and dance to the music that is now considered oldies, and wear the fashion that is now referred to as retro, never forget, we listened to it, danced to it

“[Deceased owner Joey Vento] was a generous guy who donated to places like the Mummers [Museum]. [Because of that,] Geno’s did the right thing by removing the Confederate flag Joe Fitzgerald, Fourth and Tasker streets

and wore it first. In order to appreciate fully the sweet insanity of the ’70s, I guess you just had to be there! There is nothing old about an era that refuses to die, continues to reinvent itself, demanding to remain forever young and accepting nothing less. But while you’re out there kickin’ it old school, just remember, we were the old school who kicked it first!

0c`\W\U bV]cUVba To the Editor: Being an Army veteran, I can understand how emotional people can get when someone burns, stomps or “desecrates the American Flag! However, if you truly do love this country and what it stands for, do not overreact! “Freedom Of Speech is hands down the greatest Right we Americans have. But you must understand “Freedom Of Speech goes both ways. If you witness someone doing something to the American Flag that you don’t like, you have to remember to respect their right to free speech, as others do for you and your actions. Do I like when these people do this? Absolutely not! But, I am proud to live in a country where its citizens have the right to do this! I love my country, just as much as the next guy/gal. Gave three years of my life serving this great nation. I wanted to ensure our way of life, including the 1st Amendment, lives on. I believe it would be disrespectful to those who have fought and died for the United States and others, so that they too can be free, to have just partial freedom of speech! I love my country and I love my Flag. But above all else, I love what this country stands for, and the rights and freedoms we are all “The Confederate flag never stood for anything but oppression. I understand being proud of your heritage, but not that part of it. I agree that Geno’s should’ve taken it down. Gen Everett, Fourth and Greenwich streets

able to exercise! If you get angry when you witness someone doing things to the American Flag that you don’t like, it’s understandable! But when you intervene, or assault someone for doing this, you are now infringing upon their Constitutional right to do so, and that, ladies and gentlemen, is truly anti-American. Think about it. 1V`Wa 2]gZS A]cbV >VWZORSZ^VWO

/ R]e\ab`SO[ ]cbZ]]Y To the Editor: Summer is finally here! With that comes the great pleasure of recreation along the region’s great waterways. From trips to the Jersey Shore or to a local swimming hole, to kayaking and canoeing on winding rivers and streams that crisscross Pennsylvania—today, we are lucky to have countless places to visit on these sunny days. Unfortunately, nearly a decade ago polluters carved out loopholes in the Clean Water Act, leaving many miles of the creeks and streams we love in Pennsylvania vulnerable to more pollution. The good news is that with the Clean Water Rule, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is moving ahead with restoring much-needed protections to small streams, creeks, and wetlands. We need U.S. Senator Bob Casey to support the EPA’s Clean Water Rule and get it over the finish line: someone always lives downstream and we have a responsibility to protect these places for our communities and theirs. 8SaaWYO ASQQWO A]cbV >VWZORSZ^VWO Comment on these letters or topics at southphillyreview.com/opinion/letters.

“I think it’s a good PR move for Geno’s. It shows that they support the victims of the South Carolina tragedy and that the symbol no longer is useful- and may never have been. Kallie Falandays, Fourth and Greenwich streets

Philadelphia, 1100 Pattison Ave. At 2:05 a.m. June 14, police arrested John DeFeo and shortly thereafter detained girlfriend Kateyln Mascuilli after two males told them the couple bit, kicked and punched them, with one complainant reporting that he needed eight stitches to close an eye wound. Methodist Hospital personnel treated and released them. Authorities charged DeFeo, of the 2400 block of South 13th Street, with criminal conspiracy, aggravated and simple assault, disorderly conduct and recklessly endangering another person. The 23-year-old posted his $4,000 bail and awaits a June 30 preliminary hearing. They charged Mascuilli, of the 2200 block of South Bancroft Street, with the same offenses minus disorderly conduct. On June 18, the Phil@Og[]\R adelphia Police Depart/\bV]\g 6S^Pc`\ ment announced the May 15 arrest of Raymond Anthony Hepburn. Three men remain at large for their roles in an attempted robbery in Hawthorne. The complainant was walking on Broad Street approaching Bainbridge Street at 5:15 a.m. Saturday when a white Hyundai hatchback pulled up, with the operator asking him for the time, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. When he took out his iPhone and walked toward the vehicle, the motorist grabbed him and tried to take the gadget from him. The man held on to the side of the automobile as it pulled off, with the driver dragging him for two blocks. He last saw the ride heading southbound on Broad Street. Methodist Hospital workers treated him for cuts and bruises to his right hip. He described the driver as black and in his mid 30s and wearing a black T-shirt; the front passenger as black and in his mid 30s; having tattoo arm sleeves; and wearing a white V-neck T-shirt; and the rear-seat occupant as black and in his mid 30s and weighing more than 300 pounds. To report information, call South Detectives at 215-685-1635, text PPDTIP (773847) or visit phillypolice.com/forms.

ummer is here. The days of water ice, hanging out with friends at the park or recreation center, enjoying al fresco dining, having a block party and taking in a Phillies game — the diehards still make it a regular occurrence — are just a sampling of the regular routines that make summer in South Philly special. There are plenty of mark-your-calendar-in-red (no Phillies pun intended) events worthy of summer entertainment consideration. Instead of a long list of suggestions, here is a look at 10 should-do events.

hen The Bearded Ladies Cabaret started conceiving of a cabaret that’s based on plants, the members knew they wanted to perform it in an actual garden. And who does charming pop-up gardens in Philadelphia better than the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS)? So when PHS gave the Beards the green light, they went full steam ahead with a concept partly inspired by Michael Pollan, a science writer based out of Berkeley, Calif. who’s been writing about the secret lives of plants since 1991. Sally Ollove, of the 200 block of Christian Street, is the Beards’ associate artistic director and she’s helming the production of “Bitter Homes and Gardens: A Botanical Hoedown set to put down roots for a few weeks at PHS’s pop-ups at 9th and Wharton and then at 15th and South streets. Ollove may have already read “The Omnivore’s Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals (2006) or “The Botany of Desire: A Plant’s-Eye View of the World (’01), but in ’13, Pollan published an essay in the New Yorker titled “The Intelligent Plant that really got her thinking. It inspired her especially because “the debate [isn’t] really over whether plants have senses and what that experience is but how do we define intelligence? Sitting in the cool room of their rehearsal space in North Philly, she explained cerebro-centrism, or “that humans can only recognize intelligence that looks like their own. Because plants don’t have brains the way that humans think of brains, some would say that negates the idea that they’re intelligent. And “Bitter Gardens was born, which turned into the show’s ultimate question – “If plants could speak, what would they sing? We are a cabaret company, Ollove added for emphasis. What they’ve conceived is a hilarious, thoughtful and provocative hour-long cabaret full of characters, song, dance and characteristic silliness. Their mission says “they fuse cabaret and theater to tackle the politics of gender, identity and artis-

performed by Bearded Ladies’ artistic director John Jarboe). Also, two years in the works now, they’ll debut a much-anticipated Andy Warhol opera collaboration with Opera Philadelphia in September. Jarboe and Mary Tuomanen are credited as the writing team, but the work has been created in collaboration with the cabaret’s company members. “PHS is very happy to host performances by The Bearded Ladies in the Pop Up Gardens. The gardens are the perfect setting for their summer cabaret, and we can’t wait to experience their production created just for our audiences, PHS interim executive director Margaret McCarvill said. The Beards have prepped a cabaret that’s whip-smart and asks very important questions, namely, how do humans think they can manipulate and outsmart Mother Na-

Dylan, and Tom Waits to RaeLynn, the Andrews Sisters and Faith Hill, as well as original songs by resident composer Heath Allen, all played by a three-person band made up of accordion, fiddle/banjo, and sousaphone. JEBEDIAH EATIN-GOOD’S THE “CEO of a Monsanto-like corporation called EatinGood, and Jeb is bringing his message of genetic modification through song and dance, Ollove explained. “And he’s playing on nostalgia, or the corporate appropriation of nostalgia, and he’s brought the GMOs played by U Arts students: Mrs. Potato Heads, One-Ton Tomato, and Glow Onion or Glonion. That’s right, Jeb’s also brought his friends the Hash Sisters, Mary and Jane. Observers will also find a local chapter of the Green Scouts, and a group

of plants who’ve been kept out of the garden: a dandelion weed played by Kate Raines, Jarboe as a fern named Fern and a sassafrass tree. Of course Faith Hill, Eatin-Good’s headliner for a night of genetic experimentation jubilation, will make a cameo. There’s definitely a strain of the production that emphasizes the ways in which humans stomp all over naturalism. At Tuesday’s rehearsal, Tuomanen’s Eatin-Good says “I can grow in all kinds of weather and asked a castmate to “spray this pesticide right in my mouth, go ’head! Mmm, I love it. They play on a Joni Mitchell classic, “Big Yellow Taxi, with Jeb saying “you can pave paradise, put up a parking lot, and put a paradise on top – stack em’ up! Who says the city and countryside are at war? The GMOs sing a refrain of “mmmm pop up pop up. The music is steeped in country and folk for a reason. “Country music is rooted in agriculture, at least in the imagination of America, that and also I was interested in country songs about wants and needs. A plant needs sun, a plant needs water, Ollove said. She also noted “if humans died, plants would survive and at rehearsal, an actor sang “Civilizations they come and go / Sooner or later they’ll crumble and fall / We’re just here in the middle of it all. There’s a little us versus them in “Bitter Homes, but Ollove says it could be better conceived as a play on power and control. There’ll be plenty of “HYAH!s, a riff on Sons of the Pioneers’ “Drifting Along In The Tumbling Tumbleweed, and of course a rodeo-inspired “Hoedown sendup. And though the Beards have built a stage that’s mobile, that doesn’t mean they’ll spend the whole night on it. “We’re the Bearded Ladies so plenty will unfold around the garden and audience, Ollove said. And “some of the menu items [at the Pop Up] will get called out in the show, and we have a fake PHS acronym, but insists on keeping it a secret. The hoedowns begin at 9th and Wharton with previews July 1 and an opening July 2. They’ll run in Passyunk Square until July 10 and relocate to South Street for a July 14-19 run. Admission is pay-whatyou-can, but a suggested donation of $15 to $20 is encouraged. +(* Contact Staff Writer Bill Chenevert at bchenevert@southphillyreview.com or ext. 117. ave Johnson has experienced excitement through numerous stage-based entities, but Lantern Theater Co. has emerged as his coveted confines, owing to his overseers’ emphasis on offering intimate inspections of the human condition. Acknowledging the need for laughter to have its say, the 35-year-old is teaming with the site for the sixth time for what the location has dubbed “a zany makeover of “The Hound of the Baskervilles. “I found it immediately funny on the page, the Dickinson Square West inhabitant said from St. Stephen’s Theater, which is hosting the production through Sunday, of the take on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s beloved Sherlock Holmes caper. “What’s been especially important is casting the audience and including them in

the clowning and the goofiness. Johnson is enjoying a jovial run along with director Matt Pfeiffer and co-stars Daniel Fredrick and Damon Bonetti, the first two also calling South Philly home and the final member dubbing himself a former local denizen. Like his peers, the enthusiastic hire is helming multiple roles, with Dr. John H. Watson as his chief charge. “This is my home in many respects, and the relationships keep growing stronger because of the great work available, he said of reveling in the show’s monthlong “cheeky and fast-paced treatment of the classic. “This is a wonderful project, particularly because of the comedic qualities, which are really instructional. Johnson has honed in on the humorous components in part because of his stand-up comedian identity and on account of his awareness that the proper execution of amusing material demands excellent timing and

consideration of patrons’ preferences. Also a member of the highly renowned trio The Berserker Residents, which dedicates itself to “original works of alternative comedy with a pop-comic aesthetic, he values each chance to gauge crowds’ reactions, with there being no mystery to how much that matters for “The Hound of the Baskervilles. “We’re constantly analyzing how well everything goes over, Johnson divulged, noting an instance where he and Bonetti responded to reactions to puns by jokingly saying many more would be coming. “I have sort of taken the lead in looking at our pace and our delivery, and that’s important because I’ve done drama and know it pretty well, but comedy is a whole different ballgame. The performer added that featuring mistakes and not looking to conceal them proves a precious element of mirthful works, especially ones such as his current

task in which costume changes abound. He definitely deems the vulnerability valuable and appreciates that Lantern yet again has trusted him to triumph. “It’s one of the best places to work because of the power behind each production, Johnson said. “It’s where I’ve enjoyed my greatest success and a place where you can take chances because the people believe in you. THE NINE-MONTH SOUTH Philadelphian matured as a Maryland resident whose initial theatrical interest centered on assisting productions rather than acting in them. “I remember struggling to remember my lines and not feeling as if I were having much fun, Johnson said of an eighthgrade experience. “I had this thought that something could come from me standing on a stage, but I wasn’t sure what. High school bore more answers, with the budding thespian acquiring confidence not only in his memory but also his receptivity to what the theater field could yield. With little knowledge of Philadelphia, he chose the metropolis as his educational haven, making the University of the Arts the only school to which he applied.

Theatre Horizon and The Wilma Theater granting his gregarious nature moments to marvel. Domestic delight has found him, too, as he and wife Genevieve Perrier, also a theater figure, recently became parents. “There’s a ton to look forward to on all fronts, especially through fatherhood, Johnson observed. That progressive thinking will surely result in a stellar late summer FringeArts Festival presentation through the Berserkers, whom, he noted, are seeking an available classroom for their school-heavy concept, and a great early fall offering of “Shipwrecked for the Walnut Street Theatre. “I’m at a point where I’m looking for a bit more out of everything, Johnson said, noting that “The Hound of the Baskervilles is an initial step because it is not the sort of role that he would usually play. “‘What’s next?’ is a question that I like pondering. SPR For tickets, call 215-829-0395, or visit lanterntheater.org. “It was such a great time to be there, and I loved it, Johnson said of the institution. “It ended up helping me to score my first huge break, too. The Center City facility hosted auditions for Enchantment Theatre Co., which secured his services for a six-month tour of “The Snow Queen. Upon the expedition’s conclusion, he knew he would remain a performer but lacked certainty on where he would mature. “I contemplated a few places, but, in the end, I didn’t want to be lonely, Johnson confessed. “I met great people here, and that was that. Referring to himself as akin to a new puppy whom everyone adores, the actor nabbed consistent work early on, with the now-defunct Mum Puppettheatre a priceless ally. A lull came after the brainchild folded, but Johnson has come to count himself as a blessed professional, with The Arden Theatre Co., through whom he earned a Barrymore Award nomination for last year’s “Sideways Stories from Wayside School, Commonwealth Classic Theatre Co., Interact Theatre Co., People’s Light & Theatre Co., The Philadelphia Artists’ Collective, Theatre Exile,

here is nothing more refreshing than a tall glass of ice tea to help someone to survive sweltering summer days. Mildred Lloyd-Henderson, of the 2400 block of Manton Street, adds a little kick to the mid-year favorite with her spicy brew offering. This recipe is versatile, as interested parties can make it with any kind of tea, with the added kick of nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger and even hot sauce increasing the flavor in this twist on a classic summertime refreshment. The Point Breeze resident’s concoction will generously quench your thirst and that of five to seven of your friends. SPR bOPZSa^]]\a ]T \cb[SU bOPZSa^]]\a ]T QW\\O[]\ bOPZSa^]]\a ]T UW\US`

ummer has officially arrived, and the ghastly heat and high humidity came with it. New restaurants will be popping up all over South Philly. Chefs will be creating dishes using local summer ingredients. Kanella, the marvelous Greek/Cypriot BYOB, is moving into a larger space at 757 S. Front St. with a liquor license. Kanella, which is Greek for cinnamon, gained a loyal following when it opened a number of years ago in Center City. Whetstone Tavern, which will specialize in American fare, is slated for a July opening at 700 S. Fifth St. I am counting the days until chef Scott Schroeder and Pastry Chef Pat O’Malley open the Hungry Pigeon, 743 S. Fourth St. I have eaten pigeon in London and guarantee these talented chefs will not serve customers anything that resembles the birds flying around City Hall. The restaurant, located at Fourth and Fitzwater streets, will be open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Schroeder’s signature pot pie is expected to be on the menu. Unfortunately, we may have to wait until September for chef Joncarl Lachman’s Restaurant Neuf to open its doors at 943 S. Ninth St. The French/North African-inspired menu, with a nod to Morocco, will be a welcome addition to the Bella Vista neighborhood. Summer ingredients inspire chefs to keep appetizers, soups, salads, entrees and desserts simple. I recently purchased the first Lancaster County tomatoes of the season, and they were red, ripe, luscious and bursting with flavor. The classic tomato, basil and mozzarella salad should be a staple on restaurants during the summer months. Chilled tomato soup and a watermelon, tomato and basil appetizer are tasty ways to begin a summer meal. Jersey blueberries are here, as I found them at the Reading Terminal Market. Chilled blueberry soup and desserts created with my favorite berry should take pride of place on many menus. Blueberry shortcake, lemon and blueberry pound cake topped with coffee ice cream is a favorite dessert this time of year. Pennsylvania strawberries should also be an inspiration for pastry chefs. They

are small, deep red in color and very sweet. I do not know anyone who would turn down classic strawberry shortcake with whipped cream. Homemade strawberry ice cream or sorbet is a fine way to beat the heat. Hopefully the rich heavy dishes of winter, such as short ribs and lamb stew, are behind us. Lighter fare is the key whether one is dining at an outdoor beer garden or indoors in air-conditioned splendor. Fluke flounder, blue fish and striped bass — freshly caught off the Jersey Shore — will hopefully make their way into restaurant kitchens. Wild salmon from the Pacific Northwest is in season until early September. It is one of my favorite fishes. I am thinking of how the talented chef Luke Palladino will incorporate summer ingredients onto the Palladino’s on Passyunk, 1934 E. Passyunk Ave., menu. Although I reviewed the restaurant, I will make a return visit just to see what he is up to. Chef Lee Styer of Fond, 1537 S. 11th St., never disappoints. He has an instinctive way with fish and shellfish. So does Lachman of Noord, 1046 Tasker St. Soft shell crabs are no longer the bargain they once were, but they, too, are inspiring chefs to pull out their sautÊ pans and simply sautÊ them in a brown butter white wine sauce. My friend Thom Motta, who is a lifelong South Philadelphian, recently told me that the chefs at Birra, 1700 E. Passyunk Ave., are creating calamari tempura style. I enjoy the pizza and salads there, but this is a dish I must try. I am waiting for Grace & Pat’s, 1533 S. 11th St., to include pasta on their menu before I review the restaurant. I loved their pizza, but want to wait until the full menu is on offer. It is going to be a long, hot summer, but South Philly chefs will keep us cool with their creativity and lighter, fresh and local ingredients. +(* Comment on this restaurant or review at southphillyreview.com/food-and-drink/reviews.

atrons were coming up to the front door of Fourth & Cross Tuesday afternoon hoping to sample some of the comfort food from this new talkof-Pennsport spot. Why was it closed so soon after officially opening its doors on June 15? Owner/chef Andrew Michaels decided that his hard-working staff needed a day off. With a crowd of hungry customers anticipated for Wednesday’s 7:30 a.m. opening, the multi-tasker, who said his last day off came last June, used the quiet time to take care of business matters. The operation seems to be booming inside this 34-seat eatery, as during its first weekend of operation, he had to close at 1:45 p.m. after the restaurant ran out of food. Michaels said he served more than 200 customers prior to the temporary shutdown — the establishment reopened in time for dinner. “The idea of being a substantial part of the community and being involved in the community was a no-brainer, the local resident, who resides within walking distance, said. “I looked around for a couple of years, and saw this property being unused. Michaels fell in love with the site last year, so he spoke to the landlord about it. Eleven-and-a-half months later, it was ready to open. What is the concept behind this all-day, farm-to-table spot in which one can enjoy breakfast for $8? “I wanted it to be a little soothing, but not entirely uninteresting, Michaels says on the website. “I wanted it to have some color, but not be depressive. He is far from a newcomer in the restaurant industry, having previously owned E’s coffee shop on East Passyunk Avenue, but sold it in 2006. At the time, he thought he

was finished with the restaurant business for good. “I did not want to be in the restaurant business anymore, he said. “A friend got in my head, and frankly I missed it. Now, the father of an 8-year-old is back to working six days a week. The hours are 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday; 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday; and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. Michaels also is planning to add menu specials in coming weeks, including vegan options. For those seeking something simple to make at home, in the meantime, he is sharing his Egg Sandwich recipe.

Pan fry the sausage over high heat, until just cooked through, about three to four minutes per side. Remove from the stove. Place on toasted bread, top with the egg, and serve. In the restaurant, Michaels serves the dish with a herb mayonnaise, Grafton cheddar and additional ingredients. +(* Comment at southphillyreview.com/food-anddrink/features.

pointing out that her family’s faith in one another and God has graced the last few years with timeless appreciation for their interactions. “We’re active in many walks, so this one, which is so close to our hearts, reminds us of his value to us. Having also braved heart and neck woes, Tim Mackey has always avoided chiding his fortune, never lamenting what he has lost but rather regarding what remains. “Having perspective really helps, he said of combatting any possible battle with pity. “I still have so much to experience, and each day is a blessing. ALONG WITH HIS West Passyunk residence, the Garden State inhabitant also called the 1500 block of Shunk Street home as a youth. He and Susan, who most identified with the 2800 block of McKean Street as a child, hung on corners together and became more deeply connected during their sophomore year of high school, with Tim attending Bishop Neumann and Susan the St. Monica Business School. “There was definitely an attraction that we wanted to explore, Susan Mackey said of their union, with May 22 having marked their 44th wedding anniversary. “After so much time together, we still have that curiosity about each other and the admiration

for what we have been able to experience as grandparents [of three girls]. Their nuptials led to a move to Delaware County, with a return to South Philly preceding their trek to New Jersey. Their present location has blessed them with many unforgettable memories, including the understanding of the human will to survive. Such has been the core lesson for Tim Mackey since his Feb. 19, ’11 prostate operation and the subsequent four years of treatment. “I just go about my business, the exlocal, sounding South Philly strong, said of weathering complications, including bouts with urinary retention and the presence of blood clots in his urinary tract. “My quality of life is OK, and I do what I can to keep going. Philanthropy greatly aids the selfless individual, with membership in the Greater Wildwood Elks Lodge #1896 a key component of remaining vigilant. He and Susan have also nourished a relationship with the Katie Kirlin Fund, which Whitman residents Joe and Roseann Kirlin helm as a tribute to their daughter, who passed away in 1989, two years after gradual paralysis took over her body following the removal of a spinal tumor, and as a resource for wheelchair athletes.

“That humanitarian presence and identity are important to me because giving is what we’re called to do, he said of perpetually advocating for altruism. “There really is strength in numbers, and I’m happy to give my input. He finds himself even more thrilled when he can share affection with his spouse and descendants, deriving particularly enduring pride from trips to Beaver Stadium, where he and his son annually attend a Penn State University football game. “My dad is always able to put a positive spin on everything, Craig Mackey said. “He’s helped me to raise my standards, and I wouldn’t trade my time with him for anything. He never, ever complains and keeps putting his best foot forward. Though Tim Mackey regards his quality of life as satisfactory with regards to physical capabilities, his emotional existence never figures to be anything less than an amazing journey filled with acceptance and allegiance. “I’ll be on treatment for the rest of my life, he said, “but that doesn’t mean I’m not going to live my life on my terms as best as I can. SPR Contact Managing Editor Joseph Myers at jmyers@southphillyreview.com or ext. 124. o many people hold her father, Tim Mackey, in such high regard that Katrina Mackey-Callahan has often heard them wish they could belong to her family. The doting daughter, other relatives and a number of those would-be kinsmen united with the prized patriarch on Father’s Day, with their involvement in the Gary Papa Run supplying the former resident of 21st and McKean streets with additional hope in fighting prostate cancer. “We’re an extremely close group, so I’m happy that we came together to support such a great cause, the West Deptford inhabitant said Monday of his loved ones’ participation in the Foundation for Breast and Prostate Health event. “I want for everyone to be better off, and we love playing our part in raising funds and awareness. The 64-year-old and his kith and kin took to the Benjamin Franklin Parkway for the occasion named for the gregarious sportscaster who succumbed to prostate cancer in 2009. In awe of his courage since their dad’s ’10 diagnosis, MackeyCallahan and brother Craig Mackey submitted Phenomenal Papa nomination letters, with their sentiments leading not only to overwhelming acceptance but also a second-place finish through online voting. “My father is a survivor, so that makes him a winner regardless, Mackey-Callahan said of the close poll finish. “He’s an amazing person who has fought through so many difficulties; he’s my hero. “Writing about him was a nice way to acknowledge my father, her sibling added. “The man’s will is amazing, and he’s been such an inspiration, especially to me in my role as a dad, too. The close clan, with Timmy’s Walnut as its nickname because of classical references to the prostate’s size as akin to a walnut’s, joined fellow answer seekers in the 5 and 10K portions and the 1 Mile Fun Walk, which Tim Mackey and wife Susan chose. Certainly not a fan of fanfare, the patriarch saw the day as yet another call to help others no matter how much emphasis everyone placed on his efforts. “He’s our trooper, his bride noted,
