lowly but surely, Philly’s securing green spaces in peripheral pockets of South Philadelphia. Two huge projects are underway and complete, the Delaware River Waterfront Corporation’s (DRWC) Pier 68 and The Philadelphia Navy Yard’s Central Green, respectively. Pier 68, a project designed by Studio Bryan Hanes, is just getting construction under way, while Central Green enjoyed a well-attended and weather-

kissed opening day at the tail end of June with nearly 1,000 visitors to the James Corner Field Operations’ designed circular super-park. In a unique and rather indicative gesture on June 30, the Philadelphia Industrial Development Corp. (PIDC), along with partners Liberty Property Trust (LPT) and Synterra Partners, broke ground on a brandnew speculative-built office building at 1200 Intrepid Ave. and then turned around to cut the ribbon for Central Green. “With the addition of the beauti-

ful Central Green and the new office space at 1200 Intrepid, The Philadelphia Navy Yard continues to go from strength to strength, Mayor Michael A. Nutter said in a statement. “This unique environment has been transformed from a closed military facility to one of the nation’s leading places to work, creating even more reasons for innovative companies from around the world to move to Philadelphia. “Every project feels like a big stride, Brian Cohen, a vice president and city manager for LPT, said and

pointed to Tastykake Baking, 4300 S. 26th St., and GlaxoSmithKline, 5 Crescent Dr., as two new giants in the Yard. “The completion of the Central Green really represents for us this next wave of potential development. We already have plans for probably two more buildings that will break ground right around this park within the next 12 months. The park is a stunner. According to a Navy Yard release, the space features a “20-foot wide ‘Social Track’ ASS </DG G/@2 ^OUS ,,

To the Editor: As a frequent contributor to the South Philly Review letters page, I was dismayed to read the letter by Charlene Mockewich (“Reviewing the Review, July 2) complaining that the page has become “dull and uninteresting. I have personally received encouraging feedback from friends, but welcome responses from those who disagree with me. Certainly, the editors at the SPR read and consider all letters that arrive for publication. The quality of the letters page depends therefore on the quality of the letters submitted. Ms. Mockewich might try thinking of a topic that interests her and submitting her own thoughts, in her best writing style.

Meanwhile, I am very sorry to hear that Tom Cardella, whose columns have inspired many of my letters, is out on sick leave. Get well soon, Tom. We miss you!

To the Editor: In response to Charlene Mockewich who questioned what has happened to the Review, I am one of the many people who write in quite often, and I felt the need to defend the integrity of our neighborhood paper. It has been a source of catching up with local news and current events for many years. Good, bad or indifferent, it has always been very much a part of our city’s culture. Letters to the Editor is a

venue for everyday people, not professional writers, to use to voice their opinions, tell a story or talk about life events as they see them. I believe that the changes you were referring to is not the fault of the paper itself but rather the lack of contribution and encouragement from some readers who criticize while making no effort to create change. With writers and editors having the burden of competing with online reporting and advertising, it certainly needs all the support it could get! Some people write in because they are trying to keep a dying art alive, fearing that newspapers and books may some day soon become obsolete. I would love to read something unique and exciting that you may have to say, and hopefully you could bring some creativity back to this paper that you seem to think is lost. You have every right to state your opinion, as diversity is what sets us apart from everyone else and makes us unique individuals. I hope that you enjoyed this response, and I look forward to reading one of your interesting stories in Letters to the Editor in the future.

“That one by Taylor Swift. ‘Bad Blood,’ I think is the song of the summer. Mike Palatano, Broad and Jackson streets

To the Editor: We need more politicians like Donald Trump to have enough gall to speak out and just say what their real opinions are with regard to economic, foreign and social policies. I applaud his recent statement about illegal immigrants. Enough with being politically correct. That’s getting old. Last Wednesday, an illegal alien from Mexico shot and killed a 31-year-old fe“[Al] Salir [el] Sol reminds me of summertime. male in San Francisco. This undocumented alien is a repeat felon who has been deported five times to Mexico, according to immigration officials. Unfortunately for this young victim, San Francisco is a city that does not honor requests from ICE (Immigration and Custom Enforcement) to hold a defendant on an immigration detainer. So San Francisco authorities released the defendant. They never notified federal authorities before he was released. And yet, even after this tragedy and many like it in the past, there are American citizens who cry foul when a politician speaks about building walls and hiring more border patrol in an attempt to prevent illegal aliens from entering our country. Shame on them. To me, they are not to be trusted. Why would anyone not want to deport illegal aliens? It’s scary. @WQV 2W5WOQ][] A]cbV >VWZZg @SdWSe Comment on these letters or topics at southphillyreview.com/opinion/letters.

t approximately 11:10 p.m. Monday, 17th District police officers responded to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia for the report of a shooting victim, Officer Christine O’Brien of the Police Public Affairs Unit said. They encountered a 6-year-old boy suffering from a gunshot wound to his left foot, with the bullet causing a fracture upon striking his toes. Family members relayed that the shooting occurred in the rear driveway of a property on the 1800 block of South 31st Street. Several of the boy’s relatives had been gathered there to play basketball, with witnesses reporting hearing between one and three gunshots. Police are searching for a man who concealed his face with a plastic bag in robbing a Whitman business. At 3:30 a.m. Monday, officers responded to a robbery in progress at Dunkin’ Donuts, 330 Oregon Ave., and met with an employee, learning that she was behind the counter when the culprit walked in, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. The offender placed a clear plastic bag over his head, produced a knife, hopped the counter and grabbed approximately $400 before discarding the bag and running northbound through a parking lot toward Fifth Street and Oregon Avenue. The complainant described the criminal as white, 170 pounds, 6 foot and in his 20s or 30s; having dirty blonde hair; wearing a ripped gray shirt, tan shorts and white sneakers; and armed with a knife. To report information, call South Detectives at 215-685-1635, text PPDTIP (773847) or visit phillypolice.com/forms.

he Philadelphia Film Society (PFS) is kicking off an inaugural program called Movies on the Block, and it begins this weekend on the 1800 block of South 15th Street (between Mifflin and Moore streets). Through a 6 to 10 p.m. block party Sunday, PFS is screening a film called “Brownstones to Red Dirt, a 2010 documentary that looks at commonalities between war-torn refugees and inner-city middle schoolers. “Sixth graders from housing projects in Bed-Stuy Brooklyn and war orphans from Freetown, Sierra Leone become pen pals and learn that despite living worlds away, they may not be so different after all, reads the film synopsis. But Movies on the Block is much more than pulling down a screen and pushing play — it’s about building meaningful dialogues around film topics, corralling invested stakeholders into one space and bringing inspiring film to parts of the city that rarely get the opportunity to see powerful independent cinema. After the July 12 Newbold screening, movies will be screened in West Philly on July 29, in Southwest Philly on Aug. 22 and in Kensington on Sept. 3. Each site will experience its own screening of a critically-acclaimed modern film that tackles different issues as determined by near neighboring or like-minded civics,

libraries and businesses. “We wanted to work with communities to curate a screening experience that spoke to an issue the community leaders were already working on or trying to get their communities excited about or interested in, PFS’ programs director Allison Koehler said. In the case of South Philly, PFS pulled in The Aquinas Center, 1700 Fernon St., Newbold Neighbors Association (NNA), and Neighbors Invested in Childs Elementary (NICE), plus Redemption, Forgiveness and Peace (RFP) activist Will Little, and a community poetry workshop and performance will be handled by Carlo Campbell. Koehler said she was aware that there is “talk in the community about where lines are drawn and what’s called what,

he 23 bus has problems. Lots of them. The nearly 14-mile-long route has an average of 22,801 riders on a daily basis, ranking it third in SEPTA’s system for ridership. But its on-time percentage is only 64 percent, even with a maximum of 33 peak vehicles running up and down 11th and 12th streets. According to SEPTA, “over the last year, Route 23 has had more complaints than any other SEPTA bus route, with the majority of those being pass-up/overcrowding complaints.

but NNA helped facilitate the process of identifying the topics that Movies on the Block should consider. NNA outreach coordinator Anne Lynn said they got about 70 poll responses from a Facebook group and they were education, public art, gentrification, safety, urban gardening, community-building, urban politics, breaking boundaries and South Philly history. “Basically we took the theme of community-building and went back in our programming rolodex, Koehler said, and “Brownstones to Red Dirt immediately came into her head. “The really amazing piece of this is that young kids are asking each other simple questions like what color do you like, which then becomes do you know someone who has died or do you live with both parents or what do you eat?

After collecting input via open houses and hearings in March and May, the transit provider has adopted a plan to split the route into a 23 and 45 bus that will overlap in Center City. It considers changes every year as part of an annual service plan, which “analyzes all of our routes as well as proposes any significant service changes for the upcoming year, Charlie Webb, SEPTA’s chief officer of service planning, said. “The 45 will start at [Broad Street and] Oregon Avenue and will overlap the 23, he added. “The idea was to make two shorter routes and manage them better in terms of performance. That was really the premise — the idea to make service more reliable and predictable

“I don’t want it to be heavy or academic, Campbell, a poet, emcee and theater artist who’ll look to engage South Philadelphians at every age level, said. “I got a vision for some Saul Williams, maybe a little bit of [Walt] Whitman or Langston Hughes, he said, but he’ll also asked some pointed questions of his own. “We’ll dissect community and ask people what they see communities being, what components comprise a community, what are the feelings in the community that are inexpressible but you know they’re there. SPR asked NNA board member Lynn about their excitement and experience working with PFS. “We have a very specific geographic focus, so I think it’s wonderful that another non-profit with a focus like film can look at our civic organization and say, hey, how can we work with each other to make our unique missions shine together? she said. “I think the event model is really modern and innovative, turning a neighborhood street into a movie theater and giving people free access to thoughtful, relevant film. The other films, which Koehler encourages all Philadelphians to attend no matter their geography, are “Bite Size (’14), a story of wellness and the journey towards health from the perspective of four kids taking their habits into their own hands (7/29, Belmont Charter School Yard); “The Boy and the World (’13), the visual-and-wordless story of a young Brazilian boy who embarks on a journey from the countryside to the city to unite his family (8/22, Kingsessing Library Grounds); and “Girlhood (’14), a breathtaking drama that captures four teenage girls in the Paris suburbs pressured by peers, gangs, violence and drugs (9/3, Kensington High School football field). +(* Contact Staff Writer Bill Chenevert at bchenevert@southphillyreview.com or ext. 117. by eliminating the bunching, gapping and passenger pass-ups. On peak weekdays, the 23 arrives every seven minutes and on weeknights every six, but on weekends and late nights, the average is typically 15 to 30 minutes. The plan for the split was adopted on June 25, and it also includes the extension of east-west Route 12 to continue to Front Street to increase access to Penn’s Landing. It’s true, if people ride the 23 from Oregon Avenue to Chestnut Hill, they will be slightly inconvenienced with a transfer at Chestnut Street, but a free transfer will be offered. +(* Comment at southphillyreview.com/news/briefs.

agic Mike XXL might be harder to swallow if it weren’t the sequel to one of Steven Soderbergh’s best films. Despite the director’s pedigree, many wouldbe viewers were skeptical about his 2012 strip show, unaware they’d be getting legit artful cinema in an arena begging for shallow depictions. In a way, Soderbergh took the heat off Gregory Jacobs, his directorial successor who takes the same material and lets it gyrate and fly, turning “Magic Mike XXL into a comparatively, yet pleasurably, frothy second act. Getting right down to business, returning screenwriter Reid Carolin conveniently discards two major characters from the first film, Dallas (Matthew McConnaughey) and Adam (Alex Pettyfer), in a single dialogue exchange, explaining they’ve skipped town for overseas gigs. That leaves remaining studs Ken (Matt Bomer), Richie (Joe Manganiello), Tarzan (Kevin Nash), and Tito (Adam Rodriguez) as shapely soldiers without a general. Enter Mike (Channing Tatum), who’s been trying to live a quiet (and clothed) life since the events in “Magic Mike, but is itching to get back in the game. Needless to say, he does, and “Magic Mike XXL largely throws caution to the wind as it morphs into a one-last-ride road movie, with the crew’s final destination being a stripper expo in Myrtle Beach. Along the way, Mike and company swing by a drag bar (partly acknowledging that this franchise is equally appealing to gay men and women), have wild beach adventures and spend one fateful night at the home of Zoe (Amber Heard), whose mother (Andie MacDowell) and her friends are empowered despite the raw hands often dealt to older women in modern society.

It would be hyperbole to call “Magic Mike XXL a feminist film, since, at the end of the day, everything here is about bolstering male ego, but it’s surprising how well the movie regards and reveres females in general. From the more mature women who are prompted not to accept neglect to the customers a Southern belle named Rome (Jada Pinkett-Smith) caters to in her private club, this sequel is hyper keen to the feminine psyche. In other words, it respects its audience.

Though hardly a movie immune to predictable plot twists and emotional manipulation, “Woman in Gold brings into focus the subject behind Gustav Klimt’s most famous portrait, and more importantly, her niece (Helen Mirren), who’s trying to reclaim the painting from the Austrian government years after its wrongful theft by the Nazis. The film calls into question the value and power of cultural artifacts as symbols, and its gifted co-stars include Max Irons and Tatiana Maslany of “Orphan Black fame. +(* Comment and see the trailers for this week’s movies at southphillyreview.com/arts-and-entertainment/movies.

uriosity killed the cat but has caused no catastrophic consequences for William Shefski. Roughly five decades after making a boyhood inquiry to his father regarding the Sparks Shot Tower, Front and Carpenter streets, the former inhabitant of the 300 block of Ritner Street has endowed the Queen Village landmark with added distinction, making it a key component of his book “Shot Tower: Harry and Silas Make The Big Shoot.

“As a Philadelphian, I have access to tons of history, and I’ve often seen that structure as an emblem of our overlooked past, the 59-year-old said from the playground that surrounds the 142-foot behemoth. “It’s easy to overlook its significance, but it essentially represents the birth of the American arms industry if we ponder its role as an ammunition producer for the War of 1812. The Fairmount resident began to pen the 198-page historical fiction entry two years ago. Commencing with the murder of Honora Cormack “in the shadow of the Shot Tower, the

plot finds her son, Harry, and his friend Silas Breed seeking the Southerner they consider the culprit, with the Civil War as a backdrop to their burgeoning senses of justice and self-discovery. Blessed with a probing personality through his father’s status as a sports journalist, the thenWhitman-situated youth looked to his patriarch for knowledge of the tower’s use, with the reply readying him to research not only its durability as a symbol but also its capability as a tale inspirer. “I used to play sports at the site, so I had direct awareness of the tower, Shefski said. “We’re all pretty impressionable, I like to think, so I retained the interest and decided to give homage to a spot that deserves more attention. The scribe celebrated publication of the piece,

which finds the characters become scouts for the initial United States intelligence service and witness the South Carolinabased naval assault at Port Royal Sound, which locals dubbed “The Big Shoot, on June 10. Along with allowing him to explore even more his affinity for the Civil War, including contemplation of homefront activity, and to craft “characters that count, the product reveals the author as a persevering ponderer of the power of never letting one’s observations and ruminations perish. “I’m not someone who wants to write something and put it away for nobody ever to see it, Shefski said. “What initially compelled me to write was a love for communication, which has only intensified with age. The constant chronicler will call on that infatuation to give Harry and Silas two more occasions to collaborate, with the battles of New Orleans and Mobile Bay as the addressed conflicts, the former encouraging Shefski to trek to Louisiana for research. “This one came out just last month, so I’m eager to see what sort of reactions I

receive, the creator, who from 7 to 9 p.m. tonight will hold a Meet the Author event at Dirty Frank’s Bar, 347 S. 13th St., said. “I think that people don’t think enough about the Shot Tower. It’s not on any tour, for example, and seems like a relic to most. Sure, it’s not active now, but it remains as relevant to me today as it did when I was 10 years old. THE OLDEST OF eight children, Shefski lived the first 13 years of his life in South Philly, with the 300 block of Dickinson Street bearing his first abode before his family moved to Haddon Township, N.J. Maturing in Whitman, he classified himself as “a corner guy, with the word game “Ghost uniting his friends and helping him to gain more appreciation for language and its workings. “I had plenty of encouragement along the way, he said of contributions from his father and his education at Our Lady of Mount Carmel School, formerly 2329 S. Third St. “I wanted to explore writing as a potent means to find answers and establish connections. He pursued film and television studies

at Temple University, with an unrelenting regard for the past leading to enrollment in numerous classes, including a History of Philadelphia course by Professor Morris Vogel, whom he acknowledges in the afterword of “Shot Tower, that proved eternally telling. He would enter the fields of application/game development and computer forensics, but writing remained a passion, resulting in his beloved status as an early riser and frequent visitor of the Library Company and Free Library of Philadelphia and the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. “It really developed into a calling, Shefski, whose website reveals his prodigious output, said of the discipline, noting his allegiance to historical and science fiction. “I felt it necessary to give voice to my stories, and I’m always wondering what I can do next. Having called locations such as the Garden State and Scranton home, Shefski contends he feels most at ease deeming himself a Philadelphian, adding he derives comfort out of tabbing himself a product of Southwark, the old appellation for Queen Village, at least internally.

“There’s so much to enjoy as a new source of fun, but there’s also tons of opportunities to reflect on what this city has meant to our nation’s development, the insightful individual, who enjoys domestic bliss with wife Catherine, with whom he can boast of their children, Luke, Joe and Gabrielle, said. “Center City is undoubtedly a great spot for observation, as is Old City, but let’s not go start slighting South Philly. This area is vital, too. In his estimation of the city’s renown, Shefski will always revere Shot Tower, which turned 207 years old on Saturday, as a vital thread between the past and the present. With regards to his future, he plans to issue a science fiction work before returning to the world of Harry and Silas. “I have to put them out there, he said of his ideas. “You never know how something will affect someone, so you have to get it on paper and give it a chance. SPR Visit williamshefski.com or createspace. com/5492099. ome people may associate sugar cookies with Christmas or Halloween, but we believe that they are just as enjoyable at any time of year. Carol Pasquarello, of the 2400 block of South Clarion Street, adds a twist to the holiday classic that will satisfy one’s sweet tooth all summer. This recipe is simple but elegant, adding Philadelphia Cream Cheese to the dough to take residents’ baking games to the next level. Bring the Lower Moyamensing inhabitant’s Philadelphia Sugar Cookies to your next cookout, and share the sweetness with your friends and neighbors. SPR

aseball, particularly the Philadelphia Phillies, may be the hot topic of conversation around the Asche household, but it’s certainly not all baseball, all the time — even during the regular season. Actually, Angie Asche — the wife of outfielder Cody Asche — has been quite busy with the other wives compiling the “From Our Home to Yours, A Collection of Phillies Recipes, Volume 2: Traditions Made Healthy, which is available at the Majestic Clubhouse Store, 1 Citizens Bank Way, and benefits Phillies Charities Inc. “The idea of creating a cookbook with the player’s favorite recipes made healthy came to me during the off-season. As a dietitian, I often get asked the question, ‘How can I make this recipe healthier?’ I thought creating this cookbook would be the perfect opportunity for people to learn how to cook healthier meals while also getting to see what their favorite players love to eat, Angie Asche said. Compiling the 36 recipes required a team effort, and her registered dietician certification came in very handy. “I asked each of the players, along with their wives, to give us one of their favorite recipes, whether it was healthy or notso-healthy! After receiving these recipes, I made a few minor substitutions here and there to make it healthier, she said. “For example, you can easily swap sour cream out for nonfat plain Greek yogurt, and people rarely notice a difference! This way, you cut out excess calories and fat and actually increase the protein content of the recipe. Caribbean Jerk Chicken is something the couple enjoyed during their honeymoon to the Caribbean, so after returning home, Angie Asche made the dish. “I recreated this favorite by keeping the same jerk seasoning with the exception of the brown sugar (you really don’t miss it!), and cooking it in just 1 to 2 tablespoons of

olive oil instead of butter, she said. “We also have it with brown rice instead of white for more fiber. We feel like we’re back on our honeymoon every time we have this meal, it’s delicious!

27@31B7=<A( Stir the cumin, chili powder, allspice, cayenne pepper, cinnamon and sea salt together in a shallow bowl. Rub the mixture over the chicken breasts (Tip: Slice them into smaller pieces, about 2-ounce size, for shorter cooking time). Heat the olive oil in a skillet over medium-high. Add the chicken, and cook for about eight to 12 minutes for smaller pieces (may need longer for larger chicken breasts, keep checking middle). Flip every few minutes. The chicken will get a nice brown crust on the outside from all the spices. In a separate small bowl, combine the diced mangoes, red onion, cilantro and avocado for the salsa topping. Cut the lime in half, and squeeze all the juice from each half on top. Stir until well combined. Stir together the cooked rice and beans. Layer plates with rice and bean mixture, chicken and top with the mango avocado salsa. Serves four. +(*

s a holder of a master’s degree in British literature, Sam Tropiano has certainly encountered Malvolio’s “Be not afraid of greatness: some are born great, some achieve greatness and some have greatness thrust upon them from William Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night. Resolute in helping youths to realize the magnitude of their might, the native of the 2500 block of South Sartain Street received an irrevocable reminder of their receptivity to his encouragement May 16, with the Bishop Eustace Preparatory School baseball team downing Gloucester Catholic 2-1 to give him his 600th coaching victory. “I’m more enthused with their heart than with the fact that I hit that milestone, the Garden State inhabitant said of becoming the fourth South Jersey skipper to reach that total. “I’ll look back on it one day and ponder the severity, but in the baseball world, you have to stay in the moment and take care of business. For me, that’s think-

ing about the team we’re going to field next year and how well we’ll perform as a unit. The Lower Moyamensing product accomplished the rare feat in the quarterfinals of the 42nd annual Joe Hartmann Diamond Classic, which the Pennsaukensituated Crusaders captured for the fifth time in his 26-year stint. Having added six more celebrations to his ledger, the leader acknowledges the impressive nature of his tally but prefers to derive more pride from considering the mutual growth that has occurred on the diamond. “I coach awesome kids, and it’s always been that way, Tropiano, also the mastermind behind 20 conference, six South Jersey and five state championships, said. “The greatest benefit of my job is to help them to stay focused. In keeping them from falling prey to pressure, he can call on lessons from his Advanced Placement Psychology course at the school, where he also serves as the history and social sciences department chair. His two realms often dovetail because of their inherent competitive components, with Tropiano noting that a field often finds players prone to reflect on missed chances when they should be concentrating on upcoming opportunities. “When I look at teaching and coaching, I see perking up their motivation as a standout obligation, he said. “They have to let go of failures because a shot at redemption can be theirs in no time. With four campaigns at Richland,

N.J.’s St. Augustine Prep School as well, Tropiano has logged three decades as a mentor and continues to court innovative techniques through various conferences. Doing so as part of his classroom instruction enhancement, too, he knows that no matter the endeavor, one must mind only the present. “Guys come along and because of such benefits as private instruction, they are really advanced, Tropiano revealed. “In their academic work, too, children today are showing amazing progress, and I’m fascinated with watching that unfold. I’m never going to knock 600 wins, but give me someone who makes a key realization as a player or learner, and I’ll be ecstatic. BORN IN ITALY’S Calabria region, the renowned figure, whose baseball accolades include honors from the Courier-Post, the Hot Stover’s Baseball Club, the Philadelphia Inquirer and the South Jersey Baseball Coaches Association, first enlisted soccer as his sporting obsession. Moving to South Philly when he was 6, Tropiano, despite an initial language barrier, quickly fell under the spell of the environs, noting that the camaraderie and competitive fire among his peers proved pivotal in his maturation. “There are so many great memories from my time there, he said of his presence in the expanse, which bred enrollment at and soccer participation for Bishop Neumann High School, formerly 2600 Moore St.

“We all knew our neighbors, and there was a real sense of community. Gravitation toward gregarious people served him well at Villanova University, where he met his wife, Marianne, and secured a bachelor’s in secondary education, with a concentration in English, and the aforementioned master’s degree. Romance and his vocation led to his settling in the Garden State, with Laurel Springs as his sanctuary. Regardless of his address, Tropiano has always loved infusing youths with added belief in their bounteous gifts and values his role in conditioning their brains and their bodies. “Along with coaching great kids, I teach them, too, he said of registrants, giving a nod to their competence in handling a course whose 14 areas cause the content to go at a “very, very brisk place. “Everything about my time at Bishop Eustace fills me with administration for the chance to convey and exchange ideas. That discipline has helped to make the Crusaders a highly commendable club, as Tropiano has overseen a slew of seasons with at least 20 triumphs, including 10 straight from 2001 to ’10. The recipient of the ’13 Sportsmanship Award from the New Jersey Umpires Association has always stressed having an intense appreciation for all facets of the game, a mindset that he is using as the director of Bishop Eustace’s 24th annual Scholastic Baseball Camps. “Kids become so passionate about this game, and it’s wonderful how when they focus on the matters at hand, they can start to see how baseball might fit into their future, Tropiano, who has been able to count many college and professional successes, said. “When people put it all together upstairs, greatness can be theirs. The gifted guide figures to keep nodding his noggin at his charges for years to come, and though he might not be engaging in much prognostication, who’s to say he cannot hit 700 wins? “Every day is an opportunity to make an impression, Tropiano said. “I’ve been fortunate to use what people have taught me to apply it to others. That’s a great feeling. SPR
