work travelogue show called “Great American Food Finds. Six episodes are set to start airing Aug. 6, and their South Philly-successful Green Aisle Grocery stores are front and center. The 1618 E. Passyunk Ave. location, which opened about five-and-

a-half years ago, is only 260 square feet, and it’s perhaps this economy of space that makes them so choosy about the gourmet products they tightly pack on their shelves such as: hummus from Old City’s Zahav, Ric’s Bread English muffins, ReAnimator, Stumptown and Rival Bros. coffee beans, and ice cream from Zsa’s, Little Baby’s and Weckerly’s Creamery. They source from more than a dozen farms for produce, milk, meat, eggs, fish and poultry: Tap Root Farm in Shoemakersville, Green Meadow in Gap, Hope Springs and Sandy Ridge

in Downingtown, Griggstown in Princeton, N.J., and N.S. Troutman and Sons in Freeburg, PA to name a few. “The reaction is so great when people walk into the store. ‘Wow, this is it?’ is generally how they react, said Andrew, 29, a resident of the 2300 block of South 21st Street, the block the brothers grew up on. “Then they’re in the store for 20 minutes looking at every product. ‘You guys really have it packed in here,’ customers say. “So we have to be super-selective about what we put in

there. The Food Network blitz that announced their new membership in a very special club, reads like this: “With a sixth sense for the unexpected and delicious, brothers Adam and Andrew Erace travel the country in search of America’s hidden food treasures to fill their family market’s shelves. Whether it is a mac’ and cheese pie at the out-of-the-way farm stand, or the bacon-studded fudge brownies at the hole-in-the-wall bakASS 5@33< /7A:3 ^OUS ,,

To the Editor: You might think I am kidding, but I am damn straight when I say that if cars did not have horns, about half of drivers could not hold a license to operate any vehicle. I have been a full half block away and have had many drivers honk their horns at me when the light changed from red to green. The very same happens when they are bumper to bumper right behind me at a stop sign. God forbid when you have to make a left turn on a two-way street and are waiting for oncoming traffic to pass, you feel like you are violating the law. How about the drivers who look like they want to kill you when you beep your horn to pass them? Can you truly see there is such a thing as road rage?

How about the pedestrians who cross in the middle of the road, just looking straight ahead assuming drivers see and will stop for them? That is one terrible assumption that can cost so very much. Some have very little regard for the sanctity of human life. I am fast reaching a point not for lack of ability to drive a car, but more for the disability for other drivers who are truly unfit and uncaring to sit behind the wheel of 2,000 pounds of metal, glass and plastic who don’t drive but rather seem to aim the vehicle, and I am thinking of not driving anymore because of how dangerous it is now as compared to what was a true pleasure that I feel is being taken from me. These drivers have become too much of a danger and scare me.

t 11:37 a.m. Friday, police responded to a person-with-a-gun call on the 2700 block of Earp Street and encountered a hysterical complainant, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. Returning to her residence, they located her two duct-tape-bound children. During an interview at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, authorities learned she had been on the first floor preparing food when she heard screams from upstairs. She looked up the staircase and saw a man holding her toddler son while pointing a black revolver at her. She grabbed her phone and ran out of the abode. Investigators discovered a forced-open second-floor window grate and are considering that the point of entry and exit. block of South 20th Street, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detectives Division said. They learned the complainant had caught an unknown male inside his vehicle and engaged in a brief altercation with him upon inquiring about his presence. The offender supposedly pulled out a small black handgun and threatened to shoot the complainant, who quickly backed off, with the reported perpetrator fleeing the area on foot. The victim returned to his car and followed the aggressor to 19th and Fitzgerald streets, where the latter allegedly pulled the firearm again, leading the complainant to call police. At 3:15 a.m., police picked up information that a figure fitting the description of the culprit was located at 21st Street and West Passyunk Avenue, Tolliver said. Detectives stopped the person, with the complainant identifying him as the transgressor. Police arrested Bruce Dean, of the 1500 block of South 30th Street, and charged the 30-year-old with possession of an instrument of crime, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person, making terroristic threats, robbery, attempted theft and firearms violations. He awaits a July 30 preliminary hearing.

Police are searching for a male who used a gun to rob a Marconi establishment. Meeting the complainant at Dunkin’ Donuts, 2654 S. 18th St., at approximately 11 p.m. Saturday, authorities learned he had been standing near the sandwich machine when he heard what he believed to be a customer at the counter, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. The employee observed the figure was donning a colorful ski mask and reported he carried a gun as well. Demanding “Give me the money, the individual scared the worker into leaving the site yet made off with nothing. The victim described the criminal as black, 5-foot-3, 160 pounds and in his 20s or 30s; having a medium build, a very dark complexion and dreadlocks; sporting five o’clock shadow; and wearing a white and black skull cap and dark clothing. ver wonder what that ratty old lotto stand was doing at the intersection where East Passyunk Avenue and 13th and Mifflin streets meet? It’s gone now. You may have noticed that, in its place, is now two sets of benches and two tables with chess or checkers tabletops. A grand total of 16 folks can enjoy a seat in the plaza Sam Sherman, executive director of the Passyunk Avenue Revitalization Corporation (PARC), is calling Mifflin Park. The newsstand used to sell lottery tickets, newspapers, cigarettes and the like. “It was rotted and falling apart. It was vacant but it wasn’t vacant. They opened it enough to stay open, Sherman said. “We purchased the newsstand and then demolished it, and we repaired the concrete. PARC has been taking up projects like this for years, and Sherman was charged with identifying public spaces that could be better used when he was first hired. The Singing Fountain, where Tasker Street meets the avenue and 11th Street is another PARC-refined space, which seems to be only thriving. Sherman’s office has coordinated with 1st District City Councilman Mark Squilla to make Mifflin Park a permanent fixture on Passyunk. “Councilman Squilla introduced an ordinance that no new newsstand can go in there, so it’s permanently a green public space, Sherman reported. “Those are real, authentic Central Park benches, tables and chairs. I sourced them from a manufacturer in New England. The next wave will be installing living vegetation to soften up the triangle. “We will be installing planters, and we’ll be replacing the two trees on the East Passyunk side of the street — I’m having an arborist come next week. The trees on Passyunk aren’t as mature, and Sherman’s confident that PARC can replace them with larger, fuller trees that will produce some shade. “When the planters go in it’s going to look really cool, Sherman added.

He’s in the process of acquiring cast stone planters, and they’ll be affixed to the ground. Planters will hide city infrastructure (traffic light pedestals) and divide the space between the tables and the benches, giving say take-out diners some privacy. “The restaurants will appreciate it. It’s gonna be a little hangout — I want people to be sitting there at night because that keeps the streets safer, Sherman noted. East Passyunk Crossing Civic Association co-chair Joseph F. Marino gave a little context for the evolution of the park. “[It] started out as a watering hole for the City of Philadelphia police horses and served as such until I was a teenager. It was torn apart and re-paved right before the 1976 National Bicentennial. Sometime during my grad school years it became the unlikely home to a rather undependable lotto kiosk, undependable in that they never seemed to have regular hours, he said. He’s enthusiastic about the space getting greened and celebrated the boxing statue that was installed in the spring of 2011. “The statue, a wonderful homage to middleweight boxing legend and onceresident Joey Gidardello, is a wonderful tribute to our neighborhood’s previous history full of famous boxers and box-

ing rings, Marino, a resident of the 1900 block of South Jessup Street, said. On the arrival of Mifflin Park, Marino says “I couldn’t be happier or prouder. MIFFLIN PARK IS leading the way for a few other improvement on the docket for ’15. Namely, the Gateway project at the intersection of South Broad Street and East Passyunk Avenue. SPR initially reported on plans in February of ’14, but the project ran into some unforeseen hurdles, like the Philadelphia Gas Works utility pipe that wasn’t made obvious. “There’s a high-pressure PGW line only 18-inches deep. They didn’t tell anybody, Sherman noted. The plan was to include a cool water fountain feature that required a three-foot chamber. “The stars did not align for a fountain. So we’re trying to create a visual beacon that will be the gateway to Passyunk. The park’s renovation is under way and Sherman says his contractors promise it will be usable by the time the Car Show and Street Festival kicks off on July 26. In addition to a few new businesses making announcements that they’re moving onto the avenue, like Sam Jacobsen’s British pie shop, Stargazy, at 1838 E. Passyunk

Ave., and a second Philly Flavors ice cream location at 1928 E. Passyunk Ave., the biggest new project is the intersection of 12th and Morris streets. One of the trickiest, awkwardly frightening and dangerous intersections on the avenue, this design tweak has been in the works for quite some time. It seemed like things might actually be moving on this project with a meeting at Ss. NeumannGoretti High School, 1736 S. 10th St., which was attended by representatives from Streets Department, the City’s Commerce Department, PARC and the EPA Business Improvement District. East Passyunk Crossing’s Marino and zoning chair David Goldfarb handled questions on proposed changes to the intersection, introducing two potential redesigns. Plan 1 received less ire from neighbors while Plan 2 was loudly rejected by a few for its removal of a turn from East Passyunk Avenue to 12th Street. Both options require the loss of parking spots, six for plan 1 and five for plan 2. When plan 2 came up on the screen, one neighbor exclaimed “No, no, no, no – go back to where you live. A straw poll vote, where Marino introduced four options was voted on: yes to either plan, no to both plans, yes to plan 1 and yes to plan 2. The votes came down as follows, respectively: 16, four, 24 and 7. Sherman says he hopes the project will get started early next year for a June ’16 completion. The long crosswalks, faulty or inefficient traffic lighting will be addressed as construction moves forward on the corner behind new tenants, Bing Bing Dim Sum, 1648 E. Passyunk Ave. “The new building on the northwest corner will house a first-floor restaurant with an undetermined owner, and four apartments above it, Marino said. “That intersection is a safety hazard and has always been one. Sherman’s psyched on this and the impending revamp of the 13th Street side of Columbus Square Park, which PARC is contributing to its conversion towards an adult-friendly “outdoor living room. That won’t be until next spring. They’re going to start early next year, Sherman noted. With all these design projects, Sherman, who’s been in Philly for almost 25 years, is thrilled to see all the change. “It’s an exciting time to be in the city, it really is. I’ve lived here since 1991 and I’ve never seen anything like this, he said. +(* Contact Staff Writer Bill Chenevert at bchenevert@southphillyreview.com or ext. 117. More like the immediate near farms, bakeries and organic food producers that are accessible from Philadelphia. “The show is going to be about Adam and my exploration throughout the region of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York and Connecticut finding unique products from small mom and pop purveyors, Andrew reported. Adam, 31, is the more creative foodobsessed half of Green Aisle, something he’s honed spending years as a food critic in town, currently for City Paper. “It’s definitely a travelogue show so for these first six episodes we’re staying relatively close to home, the older sibling said. “It’s a look into how Andrew and I go about sourcing products, how we make these decisions. They opened their second location at 2241 Grays Ferry Ave. a little more than a year ago with closer to 800 square feet (and a kitchen where they can make pickles, jams and nut butters that they resell under their own names). They’re even set to open a Fishtown location on Girard Avenue this month. As for the East Passyunk Avenue location, they’ve watched it take off alongside the avenue.

“From the get-go, Andrew and I decided to open Green Aisle to fill a need. Five years ago, [East] Passyunk Avenue was a very different place, Adam said, rightly observing that Acme and Shop-Rite aren’t exactly teeming with organic products, and that Whole Foods on South Street might as well be in West Philly for some South Philadelphians. “We really just knew that in the neighborhood there was a business that could be successful and serve the needs of the neighborhood. We put some savings into it, we maxed out some credit cards and opened the store, and it’s been really successful. “WE’RE SOUTH PHILLY through and through, we’re Neumann guys, Andrew said with pride. “We just love the community sense that you get in South Philly. Strangely, it was trips to Stephen Starr restaurants like The Continental in 1999 that started to show the young food fanatics what was emerging as trendy and cool in food worlds. But it was Marra’s Italian Restaurant, 1734 E Passyunk Ave. that molded Adam’s sense of comfort food. “Big planks of veal Parmesan crispy and thin, that’s my definition of comfort food, the food critic admitted. Their mother cooked, their father “not so much. They said he was finicky, but approved of Mancuso & Son’s, 1902 E. They both watched the Food Network as hungry amateur cooks and point to Rachel Ray, Michael Chiarello and Ina Garten (also known as the Barefoot Contessa). “Her recipes are always spot on, Andrew said of Garten. When pressed to wax poetic about the growing Avenue where their business has taken off, Adam, who lives on the 1700 block of South 11th Street, has nothing but raves for the now-en-vogue corridor. “We absolutely love the changes that are happening here. It’s a real testament to the revitalization of downtown corridors. People don’t want to go to the mall, he said. They hear it all in their little shop, including neighborhood raves from house hunters thrilled to see their store, from New York City to Los Angeles to Portland, OR. “The development around it is so organic. It has always been a really nice neighborhood to live and do business with people who’ve lived in South Philly all their lives living next to people who just moved here from other parts of the city, Adam added. As for their chemistry, on and off screen, they claim it’s healthy and happy. “We were pretty much raised as twins, [we were even] put in the same outfits until about six, Andrew joked. “That’s why we have the relationship that we do, we don’t fight. Maybe because of Adam overordering something or not consulting with me. Fortunately, we have a great relationship in and out of work. +(* Contact Staff Writer Bill Chenevert at bchenevert@southphillyreview.com or ext. 117. ne need not reach a particular age to possess a profuse appreciation for the potential of a passion. Felicia Punzo has spent 18 of her 22 years living a performance-packed existence, yearning not only to forge a prolific singing profile but also to inspire the pursuit of any dream. The vigorous vocalist has begun to complement her status as a beloved local presence with national acclaim, as her song “Sound My Heart Makes has claimed the No. 35 position on the Billboard Dance Club chart. “It’s such a fun song to sing, the Packer Park inhabitant said of the tune, which fellow South Philadelphians have belted back to her during local festivals. “It’s been with me for a few years, so I’m thrilled that it’s receiving mainstream exposure. Punzo, whose area adulation includes a second-place finish as top performer in this year’s South Philly Review Readers’ Choice Awards, celebrated the energetic composition’s entry onto the chart in June. She has called on the catchy number to achieve reputable rankings on reverbnation.com, with the piece and other selections helping her to piece her career together. “I’m open to a bunch of influences, and I still definitely want to experiment, Punzo, with ample dance and pop rock experience, said of adding to her arsenal. “It can be such a tough business, but because of my family and my faith, I believe everything is going to work out.

B?<;IJOB;I That positively persistent approach has found the young woman garnering gigs throughout her journey, infusing her output with a nod to the knowledge that comes with being true to oneself and accepting the notion that a crowd will not always be correct. “I don’t think it’s healthy to force anything, Punzo said, reflecting the lyrics “There’s no point in rushing fate/The best things in life are worth the wait from her 2009 track “Believe. “My music is my job, and all my future will consist of is this. I have to make the best decisions for me because I’m a disciple of personal responsibility. In linking with similar advocates of that mindset, Punzo has found herself saddened at times to learn of the lack of self-esteem plaguing many youths. Close enough in age to many of the challenged children, she has presented herself as a mentor, especially through her year-old Live Pray Music and Believe Foundation and its I’m Just a Kid anti-bullying program that takes its name from another well-received song. With direct awareness of the sting of ridicule, Punzo, whose altruism has resulted in visits to seven local

schools, knows that balancing life’s misfortunes with moments of majesty helps to mold an unflappable identity. “Music has brought out my personality, for sure, the chanteuse, who recalled feeling shy as a girl, said of her maturation. “It can do that for other people, too, but if it’s not music, it has to be something else. If you’re doing what you love, that’s a huge key to your happiness. PUNZO BEGAN TO be able to pronounce herself as a prosperous performer even before she started elementary school. With input from her relatives, she quickly decided that singing would vanquish all other vocations and started to score copious opportunities to shine, including her first recording session as a 14-year-old. “I just loved how I felt when being in front of people, she said of her initial fortune. “It seemed to me as if all these new and exciting worlds were waiting for me, and I wanted to enter them. Matriculating at Ss. cluding Philly’s own Bunny Sigler, a contemporary of South Philly native Kenny Gamble, proving instrumental. Upon her graduation from the East Passyunk Crossing-based institution in 2011, a year that saw the inclusion of her rhythm and blues single “Alone on a Florida-issued Winter Music Conference Compilation CD, she felt more at ease with her mission within the music realm, seeing her calling not only as a means for individual gain. “As a senior, I figured out where I wanted it all to go, and that definitely meant using my story, which features moments of being a victim of negativity, to encourage others to fight through their hard times, Punzo, who went on to study at The University of the Arts, said. “I come from a family that wants to help people, so that’s in my blood, and I love it. As touching lives has achieved equal standing with polishing melodies, Punzo has profited from her unflinching commitment to credibility, which the Greater Philadelphia Chapter of UNICO honored May 1 in presenting her with its Humanitarian of the Year Award. No matter how many accolades she collects or acknowledg-

ments she accepts as an artist, especially for “Sound My Heart Makes, which will be receiving consideration for a Grammy Award nomination, according to patriarch Frank Punzo, humility will always help her to deem herself a conduit for an immense message — never cease seeking. “I want to expand my national profile as a singer, the virtuoso, who will participate in July 25’s Daylife Beach Club Old School Freestyle event at Harrah’s Resort in Atlantic City, said. “However, I fully know that my destiny is not to be in this business for myself. It’s all about making connections for me, and I don’t limit that to professional ones. Having heard that she needs to marinate to prepare for the rigors of her field, Punzo contends that she has absorbed enough and can exact her plans accordingly. “I’m a passionate person, and that can get someone hurt, but I don’t break, she said. “This is my life. SPR Visit feliciapunzo.com. the window onto Chestnut Street. Instead you eased my embarrassment). A word is in order about some things in the medical and pharmacy field that need improving. To the drug companies, is it really that tough to make a potassium pill that is smaller than an NFL football? I swear if Tom Brady had to take a potassium pill, he would hire someone to try to deflate it. If you split a potassium pill in order to make it easier to swallow, the taste is like drinking battery acid. There is also a procedure that’s been in effect for likely half a century called a nasogastric tube insertion. In this procedure (in my case while I was fully awake), a plastic tube is inserted in one of your nostrils. The tube is then threaded down your throat into your stomach. In one case, it took five tries to get the tube inserted in the right spot. If you want life on the edge, try letting your medical attendant understand that the tube has coiled in your throat and that’s why your eyes are bulging out of your head at that moment. Only Linda Lovelace could have enjoyed what is lovingly called the NG. Isn’t there someone on “Shark Tank who can figure out how to make a better NG? And throw in a set of steak knives, too. The transition from the hospital to home is not always easy. My wife Fran, as you know, is the best, and once saved my life six years ago by donating me a kidney (is it selfish of me to think that she could’ve donated her colon this time around and cut a few weeks off my hospitalization?). I worried about Fran when I arrived home because my bowels had not shifted into regular gear yet — just ask the nurses. When you’re married 51 years, you don’t have much margin for error. Chances are crapping the bed in the middle of the night will not be greeted by a smile from your partner and the words, “Honey, everything is going to be alright. Maybe if the same thing happened after three weeks of hot sex when you first married, crapping the bed might not be a deal breaker, but after 51 years of marriage, all bets are off. Thank goodness, so far, my newly re-sectioned colon is cooperating. Back in the day, my family never spoke the word “cancer. My father called it “The Big C, which made it sound like the disease could score points and rebound. No one went for checkups. The Big C was a death sentence. Nowadays, cancer can be just another illness from which one can recover. In the meantime, for some reason Fran keeps looking to check my life insurance policy. I have taken the theme from “Brian’s Song off my iTunes playlist. I’m feeling tougher like Bernie Sanders-with less dandruff. SPR

ontrary to popular thought, life after 70 is not dull. While millennials have to jump off cliffs into lakes in Argentina or ski the Alps for adventure, we seniors can live life on the edge waiting for a biopsy report. In my case, the result was a cancerous mass in the colon. Uncle Nunzi said he found it ironic that for someone who never goes to Mass, I was holding one in my colon. When the doctor gives you the cancer diagnosis, you have two choices: It could mean that your sister-in-law will never again have to choose a gift for you that combines slippers and two 9-volt batteries; or maybe the cancer is curable and you can start to appreciate your sister-in-law’s gifts for a change. In my case, the prognosis, is at the moment, this guy is just a “temporary cancer patient. The sunny prognosis actually caused me to remark brightly — Except for this cancer, I’ve never felt better in my life. At this point in the column, I want to thank the terrific folks at the Jefferson University Hospital for once again saving my life. It seems that the medical and nursing staff at Jeff have taken it upon themselves to rescue my family from another high-priced burial just because that’s what they do. I love my doctors — particularly Dr. Scott Goldstein, colon-rectal surgeon supreme. Dr. Goldstein did his thing on former Eagle Vince Papale in 2001. Vince told me that he calls Dr. Goldstein “The Wizard. I do not want to spoil things by mentioning that UCLA Coach John Wooden already earned that nickname, but hey, maybe Hollywood will make a biopic where George Clooney will star as me in “Invincible 2. I do not want to forget to mention the wonderful Jeff nursing staffs on the third, fifth, seventh and 13th floors, all of whom cared for me physically and mentally during those trying days. To you Republicans out there who are saying to themselves that I am helping to bankrupt America’s medical system, I cheerfully apologize. However, I must add that nobody sang “America the Beautiful more loudly in their hospital room on July 4th. Getting back to Jeff’s nurses and all the nurses out there, you are super devoted and grossly underpaid, especially the two of you who had to clean my soiled sheets on a couple of occasions (I would have just wrapped my wrinkly Comment at southphillyreview.com/opinion/ rear end in the bed linens and tossed me out cardella.

ritter is a name applied to a wide variety of fried foods, usually consisting of a portion of batter or breading that has been filled with bits of meat, seafood, fruit or other ingredients. Kathleen Valle, of the 2600 block of Dudley Street, has created a unique version courtesy of potatoes, zucchini and mozzarella cheese. The Grays Ferry inhabitant and frequent recipe submitter offers another winning option in the ever-demanding and often-confusing battle of “What should I eat? Shoot, just reading the directions might start one’s mouth watering! interesting to note that Italians who live in Calabria and Sicilians often use hot peppers in their dishes. For my entrÊe, I chose boneless loin of rabbit, which is another top dish with me. The fork-tender meat had been properly braised in wine with fresh herbs and pancetta. I found the rabbit a little salty, but this is a matter of personal taste. The braising liquid was perfectly reduced to a delicious sauce with just a hint of the flavor of wine. A stew of pig’s trotters was another first for me. I enjoy roast pork in all its glory and prepare pork stew at home. This braised dish produced tender slices of pig’s feet keeping company with aromatic vegetables and herbs. As with the rabbit, the portion was generous. I could not decide between the panna cotta and the budino for my dulce. It was down to a culinary coin flip. Our waiter told us the budino was caramel and butterscotch rather than the usual chocolate version I enjoy in Italian restaurants. It was slightly sweet but downright delicious. Tiramisu is ubiquitous these days. The pastry chef hit the mark here. Ladyfingers soaked in espresso formed the base for the creamy mascarpone, with the creation having bittersweet chocolate shavings as a topping. Service was excellent. Two waiters took good care of us and the other patrons in the busy dining room. It was a lively mix of people, including four women of a certain age who live in Delaware County (one woman was born and raised in South Philly). They just came from the theater and sat next to us. The four-course dinner at Monsu is one of the best bargains in the city. I could dine here once a week. Four tips of the toque to Monsu. +(*

hen working as the sous-chef at South Philadelphia Tap Room, 1509 Mifflin St., four years ago, Jorge Bina Jr. learned of his bride Benita’s pregnancy. Already enthused about being a breadwinner and growing increasingly eager for his child’s arrival, he decided to augment his culinary competence by seeking his own site. Nearly two years after having done so, the 27-year-old counts himself as a proud patriarch and the proprietor of Quetzally, 1225 Fitzwater St. “I felt I could do it, and I’m happy I could bring these Mexican foods to this community, the businessman said at his Hawthorne establishment. “These are items that are special to me, so I like when people give compliments and say ‘Thank you.’ The Mexico City native and resident of the 2700 block of South Sheridan Street has crafted quite a commendable career, including Center and Old City employment. Opening Quetzally, named for his daughter, in October 2013, he has further proven his fascination with fraternizing with family by helming the space with his father. “When I came to this country in 2002, I needed to do something, so cooking made sense to me, the younger Bina said. “I love to eat and learn, and this puts those together. With his heritage as the centerpiece, the Marconi West inhabitant loved pondering the composition of his menu, which includes 11 sections. The tostadas portion consists of eight options, with Bina Jr. deciding to share the recipe for the Spicy Pork offering. “It has a few elements to it and therefore will take some time if people want to prepare it, but it’s worth the wait, he said of the 12-hours-in-the-oven product. “If they purchase it here, we’ll have done the waiting for them! Patience has become a theme for the owner, who confessed that his initial days

as a self-employed figure brought on a few headaches. Completely accustomed to his vocation’s demands and fatherhood’s responsibilities, he bears an effortless smile and a constant commitment to excellence. “I bring my touch to everything, he said. “That’s how I know I’m giving everyone my best.

Take the leftover juice, and reduce it, using two cups to dump back onto the meat before mixing. joined Twitter more than six years ago because I learn much about the city’s ever-growing restaurant scene from those who tweet. I also visit culinary websites and The Passyunk Post. Unfortunately, there are a number of restaurants that are rarely mentioned on these sites. Le Viet, 1019 S. 11th St., is my favorite Vietnamese restaurant. The happy hour is a true bargain. Many dishes, including a small bowl of pho, will not break the bank. While driving around the Italian Market, we passed Monsu, a Sicilian restaurant I reviewed four years ago. I enjoyed a fine brunch and wondered about the dinner menu. Monsu is a casual cash only BYOB. An employee directed us to a table near a large window, and we settled in. Our server opened the Verdicchio we brought and set it into an ice bucket. Some tasty bruschetta arrived as well as homemade focaccia and Italian bread. Our waiter explained the specials and told us about the four-course, $40-dinner. It was almost as if a culinary thunderbolt came down to earth. Patrons choose an appetizer, pasta, entrÊe and dessert from the menu. I began with a scallop that was perfectly seared with seasoned herbs and set upon a bed of lentils and fava beans. The contrast of textures was spot on in this dish. The scallop was translucent inside, and its natural sweetness paired well with the slight crunch of the lentils and fava beans. The sauce was also spot on: a natural reduction of white wine and natural pan juices that were laced with herbs. I cannot rave enough about the octopus. It is a staple in a number of Mediterranean and Greek restaurants. The chef at Monsu prepared a version that was tender, tasty and, thank goodness, lacking the strong red wine vinegar overbearing flavor that most chefs produce. Some fresh greens accompanied the mollusk. All the pastas are homemade. The list was dazzling but I ordered the evening’s special. Our waiter told us the pasta is shaped like leaves, which I have never seen before. After the al dente preparation, it received as toppings several plump mussels, still in their shell, and bite-size bits of spicy sausage. The peppery flavor was just right. Spicy does not translate to spicy hot. It is
