controversial new development project has been pushed through Philadelphia’s Zoning Board of Appeals and may break ground within the next 50 to 60 days. Ori Feibush, of OCF Realty, is the developer and after two years of courting the ZBA and the Philadelphia Planning Commission, he got his approval last week. It’s a whopper: 22 row houses, which include a garage parking spot for each, that

will sell for somewhere in the middle $400,000 mark, as high as $500,000 for corner properties. The controversy has largely centered on the zoning of 2010 Wharton – it was previously zoned as industrial and held, for nearly 130 years, a Wanamaker horseshoe factory. And while a horseshoe factory doesn’t make sense for 2015, many residents are opposed to the project because they would prefer a business or a jobgenerating enterprise like a grocery store. “I couldn’t legally build any residential, Feibush said. “Neither you

nor me are going to open a horseshoe factory. It’s been used for lumber storage for the last 40 or 50 years. It will be a green development with units housing three bedrooms and two-and-a-half bathrooms. He reports green rooftops, permeable pavers and progressive stormwater management opportunities. They’re 18 feet and two inches wide, which is far beyond a typical row home with a width of 14 feet for small cross streets and 16 feet elsewhere. “We’ve never built homes as wide as these, Feibush admitted. Speaking on behalf of 2nd District

City Councilman Kenyatta Johnson, Steve Cobb said he hopes Feibush and his team will be open to continuous calls for cooperation. “Now that the ZBA has approved the development, we hope that the development team will continue to open lines of communication with any community members who might have remaining concerns and see if they can find a way to at least continue to try to address those concerns, the councilman’s director of legislation said. To the Editor: I have not cared much for the slop (in office) that we all seem to be stuck with and whose only interest is to stay in office term after term. The truly horrible performances really deprives us all of the representation we need and crave desperately, but, thankfully, I believe that all of that halfheartedness is about to come to a complete halt. How and why? I truly believe that Donald Trump was ordained a true savior that I thought could or would never happen. Just to make myself unquestionably clean, please note

– I never ever really cared a hoot about Trump, and my only feeling was complete scorn that he was a blowhard. Boy oh boy the man has turned me completely around to absolutely loving him. I now know what he stands for. Just be a little patient with me, and follow along to understand my change of heart. Have you noticed that he has managed to do something that we never thought possible? He ratted and has caused near apoplexy for the entire Republican Party and has unhinged them all. He has made them scurry and scamper frantically and find-

ing all sorts of openings to try to discredit most of which cannot be discredited, that is opening many old wounds that there are no bandages for. You must realize unlike most in office, he cannot and will not be brought and paid for like most of the current trash who are hanging on for dear life now because they finally are getting it that it’s time to pay the piper. I urge all of you from now on to pay very close attention to Trump and all he so wisely says and what he does. It will be much too important to miss. Then you will appreciate what I feel and know that has changed my mind for the salvation of our beloved America. Trump is still a blowhard, but in a very good way to make himself heard by all of us and the Republican Party. Believe me, they are finally listening hard. They have never encountered anything quite like Trump and do not know how to handle it. I just love it and you will too. He has come in the nick of time.

o say that there are many restaurants thriving and opening in South Philly is an understatement. We seem to be a haven for them, especially along East Passyunk Avenue and its fringe. Eateries that thrive in Fishtown, Center City and West Philly have realized that they want in on the action, too. With closing and opening news flying on a weekly basis, we decided a roundup was in order.

Coeur, 824 S. Eighth St., may be one of the biggest and most-anticipated newbies. The husband and wife team of Brendan Hartranft and Leigh Maida, along with partner Brendan Kelly and chef Andy Tessier, is ready to bring its family of restaurants below South Street. The couple, owners of Memphis Taproom, Local 44 and Strangelove’s, recently said goodbye to the late (but great) Resurrection Ale House, and will open a spot called Clarkville around the corner from Local 44 this fall, as well. “This isn’t tip-toeing! We’re hitting

the boards hard and opening with a 125-seat monster, Maida said. “There is something special in the air here at Coeur. We’re all very very excited to unleash it on the unsuspecting public. If everything goes according to plan, we’ll open on Sept. 15. She and Hartranft have two children and live in Fairmount, with the husband having just overcome lymphoma and chemotherapy. “A lot of the inspiration for Coeur came from reading cookbooks during chemo, Hartranft said. “When I got done with chemo, Leigh and I

went up to Montreal and drank a lot of burgundy and had a great time — we were really struck by the accessibility. With some sentimentality, (the name of the restaurant translates to “Heart in French) he says they want “to establish the idea that the most important ingredient in the room is time with one another. “Let’s call Coeur semi-French, French by way of Montreal, Maida added. t 9:41 p.m. July 25, officers responded to a radio call for a person with a weapon and found the complainant sitting on the steps of a 21st-andWharton-streets home, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. With blood coming out of the left side of her face, she stated she and another woman had been involved in a disturbance that had some resolution. Just after matters had calmed, she said the perpetrator returned and hit her in the face with a glass bottle before fleeing. She underwent surgery on her left eye and received 28 to 35 stitches at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. Following her July 30 release, she was walking to a store in the area of the 20th and Federal streets at 11:30 p.m. when the supposed offender approached her to make amends, Tolliver said. Upon the victim’s refusal to accept an apology, the aggressor reportedly left the area but returned with another female a short time later. The second soon-to-be arrestee allegedly placed the complainant in a chokehold, pulled out a razor and held it to her neck until unknown men pulled the figure off the complainant, with the blade catching the woman’s neck. Surveying the area with the victim along for the ride, police ventured to the 1200 block of South 21st Street thanks to input from their colleagues. The woman identified one female as the one who cut her face in the first matter and another woman as the perpetrator in the other incident. Law enforcement officials arrested Angie Spratley, of the 2000 block of South Croskey Street, and charged the 46-year-old with possession of an instrument of crime, simple and aggravated assault and recklessly endangering another person. They applied the same charges to 46-year-old Serena McFadden, of the 1200 block of South 21st Street. Court records had no account of Spratley. McFadden had not posted her $150,000 bail as of press time and awaits an Aug. 18 preliminary hearing.

They ran from the site without paying for the goods and entered a blue Honda Accord with unknown Pennsylvania license plate, speeding off in an unknown direction. @SQYZSaa T]` O \SQYZOQS Police arrested a Whitman man for supposedly swiping a woman’s necklace. The complainant was walking her daughter home in the area of Seventh and Ritner streets 4:31 p.m. July 29 when an unknown figure approached her from behind, pulled her necklace off her and fled, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. She gave chase as he reportedly ran down South Marshall Street, where he handed the object to an accomplice. Her offspring called authorities and alerted them to where her matriarch was chasing the alleged attacker. A group of people on the 2600 block of South Fairhill Street managed to stop the suspect, with police arriving shortly after and the complainant, who suffered minor scratches to her neck, identifying Phea Nay as the alleged swiper. Police, who surveyed the area for the second offender, charged the 31-year-old resident of the 2300 block of South Sixth Street with criminal conspiracy, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person, robbery and two counts of theft. He had not posted his $15,000 bail as of press time and awaits a preliminary hearing today.

The complainant met with authorities at 12:51 p.m. Aug. 5 and relayed that he arrived at his home on the 2500 block of South Sheridan Street and noticed an unknown figure sitting on his front steps, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. Refusing to leave despite two requests, the interloper barked “Move along, you old bastard, or I will cut your throat. Producing a knife, the offender took several unsuccessful swings at him before

o say that there are many restaurants thriving and opening in South Philly is an understatement.

“Let’s call Coeur semi-French, French by way of Montreal, Maida added. utation is considerably battered (perhaps in part due to his recent unsuccessful campaign to unseat Johnson in City Council). “The challenge is you’ve got 100, 200, 1,000 people who are giving feedback. There are a lot of needs for the community, Feibush said. “We’re going to get beat up a little bit because the process is broken. Zoning should be used to mitigate and limit the negative effects of gentrification and displacement. The Actual Value Initiative, a project that would correct unjust taxation rates, would help relieve some of the much-felt tax fear from area residents. Feibush admits to paying $2,200 a year in taxes on the construction warehouse as is, which has already been demolished. He purports that, come March, “you’ll have 22 taxpayers paying $1,300-$1,400 a year. Post-abatement, you’re looking at a much larger return – you’ll have 22 homes paying close to $6,000 a year. Cobb confided that more taxpayers is better, but that there are still real concerns FEIBUSH HAS DEVELOPED a great deal of about development. tax base and attract new residents and to put vacant, blight[ed] properties back into use and create jobs, he said. “There’s a lot of development in Point Breeze, which causes anxiety among residents. Development will increase the value of properties. This office has, for the past three-and-ahalf years, been working hard on a number of different things to help people who really need to get tax relief so they can stay in the neighborhood and stay in their homes. Dervinis argued that LOOP and the Homestead Exemption are great for some people but don’t apply to others and may yield a couple hundred bucks. She also pointed out that the new residents will likely be unfriendly to their lifetime Point Breeze resident neighbors. “New brand new things bring brand new people. Couple that in this neighborhood with an influx of people who change the name of where you live and people are leaving. Those calls for compromise and the requests for a different use of the space have come from several meetings, mostly the registered RCO, South Philly Homes. At meetings with counted votes, the project met with overwhelming rejection. Haley Dervinis, a South Philly Homes board member and resident of the 1900 block of Annin Street, says Feibush’s initial pitch included 72 homes. At the next RCO meeting, nearly 350 people attended for a formal presentation. Dervinis says there were five communicated concerns: “Density, people thought there were too many houses. Economic diversity‌ [it’s] a gated community without a gate. Parking. Green space, green roofs but nothing that could be an accent to the neighborhood. And overall design, there were no alleys in the original design.â€? Furthermore, she noted, “the other major counterpoint was ‘We want industrial, we want a business, we don’t want any new housing.’ If it has to be housing, we want those five points addressed.â€? Nearly twothirds of the attendees were opposed. Rumors have flown since last week about the final ZBA meeting, which rarely takes place in the actual neighborhood where the project is concerned and typically occurs mid-day. “They still want to see how many people want it,â€? Dervinis said of ZBA’s decisions, who may consider testimony from nonprofits, RCOs, City Council or any other interested parties. Ninety votes were in-house for Feibush’s project, 16 opposed. What kind of business would South Philly Homes want? “It’s hard to even say what people would support,â€? Dervinis said. “We weren’t able to have that conversation.â€?

Even Habitat for Humanity’s opposed to the 22 row houses project. In a letter to the ZBA’s Tanya Sunkett, director of strategic partnerships Carrie Rathmann wrote that it should stay an industrially-zoned lot. “We know that preserving opportunities for commercial and industrial activities in the community are essential to keeping the potential for economic development alive in the neighborhood,â€? she penned, citing their North Philly offices as proof – developers regularly displace businesses to provide Temple University students with housing. In a statement from Save Point Breeze, Tiffany Green says both Feibush and City Council don’t care enough about her neighborhood. “The community wanted the property to remain an ICMX zoning (light-industrial), which would require Ori Feibush to build a large business with long-term, familysustaining jobs‌ City and elected officials continue to ignore the community’s needs and ideas for redevelopment in Point Breeze,â€? Green said. “It is clear that Feibush is not interested in working with community residents. Why have a zoning process if city officials are not going to respect the voice and vote of the people who pay their salaries?â€? An interesting foil to 2010 Wharton is Streamline Solutions’ project at 2352 Federal St., which will house its non-profit, Helping Hands Philadelphia, and offer affordable rates on some units. The headquarters will open in the fall and will include an open-to-the-public computer lab. Dervinis said projects like theirs don’t get media attention because there’s not much to reject. She added Streamline president Sean Schellenger even discussed buying a nearby city-owned lot for a garden and is keeping rooflines low at two stories. Schellenger isn’t villainized like Feibush because “it can be done,â€? Dervinis said. “He hit all the marks.â€? +(*

The South-of-South-based space welcomed the workers for an afternoon of food and music to thank them for hard work at a cleanup for the museum a week prior to the event. Jason Miller, executive director of Ready Willing & Able, admitted that not too long ago, they were being pushed away by those they were trying to help because of their negative background. They were homeless, recently released from prison or suffering from drug abuse. “For many of these guys, they weren’t being recognized by the city, by our community, or by the way of this moment like they are being right now a year ago. For all of you here and City Council to recognize us is one of the most powerful things, Miller stated proudly. The Ready, Willing & Able program was founded and operated by The Doe Fund in New York City. The Philadelphia branch is headquartered at 1221 Bainbridge St. and has been doing cleanup work for the museum for two years. No doubt they will be called on for a third time next year. The reception awarded the “Men in Blue with a citation from the City as recognition

for their exploits around the city. “Ready, Willing & Able is a nonprofit organization that provides a holistic, structured environment for homeless and formerly incarcerated individuals to regain power over their lives and become productive members of society again,â€? museum board member Maureen Fratantoni said as she prepared to present the award. ´7KLV KRQRU LV H[WHQGHG WR WKHP LQ UHFRJQLWLRQ RI WKHLU PDQ\ \HDUV RI XQVHOĂ€VK FRPPLWPHQW WR YROXQWHHULQJ WKHLU WLPH DQG WDOHQWV IRU WKH JURZWK DQG ZKROHQHVV RI WKHPVHOYHV DQG RWKHUV Âľ The “Jack of All Tradesâ€? shared thoughts and made more private ones public for the occasion. The story of a small team making a difference even when no one wanted to give them a chance served as a long journey for those involved, as did the true tale of negative lifestyles turned positive. “What I’m doing with my crew is kind of overwhelming at times in a good way. To give back to the community is an honor for me. I tell my crew, I love you and appreciate what y’all do,â€? Ready, Willing & Able site supervisor Rodney Woods emotionally stated. “I get like this when I think about where I come from and what I’m doing. My crew, I love these guys.â€? Speeches and memories provoked warm smiles around the room. Their hard work finally seemed to pay off when the gestures of the party members provided proof that the small things can go a long way. “We say thank you with sincerely felt hearts, we love you, we see the work you do around the city and it’s wonderful; don’t think it goes unnoticed. Hold your heads up high because you are representing the organization very well,â€? Dr. Pat Jackson, chairman of the board of directors of the museum, said of the diligent workers. +(* Comment at southphillyreview.com/news/features.

fter months of speculation about what would happen to the former Edward W. Bok Technical School building, 1901 S. Ninth St., a temporary solution has finally “poppedâ€? up: Le Bok Fin, named for the original training cafĂŠ at Bok, opened Friday on the building’s 8,000-square-foot rooftop terrace. The space features long communal tables while other furniture is made from reappropriated pieces found within the East Passyunk Crossing-based school. The recently unveiled space is open to the public — must be 21 to enter — Thursday through Saturday 6 to 11 p.m. and Sunday 1 to 6 p.m., weather permitting. Free membership cards, which are obtained at the entrance, are required for entry (Mifflin Street closest to Ninth Street). The operating schedule will remain intact through Sept. 13. All in all, the community’s reaction to the space has been positive. “We are finding lots of neighbors within just a few block radius returning and bringing neighbors and other friends in tow,â€? Lindsey Scannapieco, managing partner and principal of Scout Ltd LLC., the company that closed on the iconic property back in July, said. “We’ve also had loads of alumni come to visit, and they have been wearing some incredible vintage memorabilia! People are excited by what we managed to make happen given that we only received the keys about 30 days ago.â€? After closing in 2013, Bok was one of 20

shuttered School District of Philadelphia buildings that went on the market last year. It sold for $2.1 million in ’14, with Scannapieco announcing plans to breathe new life into it by creating a multipurpose space for the creative community. Le Bok Fin provides a small sampling of that vision, as the Scout team worked tirelessly over the past month to create the rooftop culinary experience designed to enchant diners with its French-inspired cafĂŠ cuisine with spectacular views of the city while showcasing the creative potential of the building. With a menu designed by catering company Fine Palate, Scannapieco described the tasty offering as approachable, flavorful and fun. “Think nicoise salads (‘my new favorite,’ cheese plates, Paris dogs (a twist on a standard hot dog) and croissants,â€? she said. Navigating all the permitting, licenses, permissions and certificates necessary to make this project happen — even though it’s only temporary — presented a bigger challenge. “The upgrades that were required to make it usable were also challenging given the age of the building and the fact that this floor was closed off for many years ... it was full of surprises,â€? Scannapieco said. Le Bok Fin is only the first installment of Scout’s grand repurposing of the building. “This project intends to capture a very specific moment in time. Obviously the terrace is extremely special, but we have 12 roof terraces across the building!â€? she said. “Who knows what it will become? As for Le Bok Fin — let’s see how the next few weeks go. We think it’s important that it’s temporary, so that we can refocus on the next big project — redeveloping the entire building!â€? +(* Comment at southphillyreview.com/news/features.

s a heedful adherent of history and a purposeful theater professional, John Lopes loves researching prominent occurrences and individuals and rehearsing his execution of their significance, deeming performing as “the icing on the cake. Through Commonwealth Classic Theatre Co.’s presentation of “Rage of Achilles, the resident of the 2300 block of South Rosewood Street is enjoying a stage-based sugar high, with three acting tasks and fight captain duties comprising his contributions to the world premiere tragicomedy. “There’s so much for me to gravitate toward with this show, the 53-year-old, who through Aug. 23 is handling his third play for the Media-headquartered entity at Drexel University’s URBN Annex Black Box Theatre, said of the Paul Parente-penned piece. “The physical elements are outstanding, and, of course, since it deals with the Trojan War, we have the historical element and the chance to look at an era that always invites investigations. The Newbold denizen is receiving direction from West Passyunk native Damon Bonetti, whom he noted has dubbed the show a meshing of “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, “The Iliad and “Reservoir Dogs. The plot places

its personae in a provocative analysis of revenge and redemption, with Lopes portraying a chorus member; Menelaus, the Spartan king; and his brother, Agamemnon, leader of the conflict’s united Greek forces. Having participated in readings of the show, Lopes lauded the manner in which the full-fledged product addresses war’s effects on humanity and the sense of responsibility that humans have to one another, particularly in angstridden times. “I’d say that Paul has truly captured the essence of these characters, the thankful thespian said of the founding member’s dedication to having Commonwealth shows reflect theater as a humanizing art form. “It combines so many elements, too, such as modern, classical, comic and tragic that people can look at it as a very strong means to understand the depths of desire and despair, too. Along with Bonetti, Lopes finds himself sharing the riveting experience with local presences J. Hernandez and Eric Scotolati. Having performed in Commonwealth’s inaugural offerings, 2005’s “Arms and the Man and ’06’s “Much Ado About Nothing, he appreciates that such a daring work has halted his hiatus. “There’s one section of the show where I’m really busy, and that’s absolutely great and so much fun, Lopes said. “No matter how active I am, though, we’re giving our take on an epic story that has survived, and, I have to say, I have some

B?<;IJOB;I amazing company in pulling it off. THE ACUTE ACTOR has collected colleagues in Philadelphia since his 1997 move here to pursue graduate studies at Temple University, where he now serves as an adjunct professor. Over the nearly two decades since his arrival, he has acquired a reputation as a commanding presence, thanks to his height and confident air, the latter being a missing component of his adolescence. “I was kind of shy and withdrawn, Lopes confessed of that period of his California upbringing. “There were things that appealed to me, including drawing and films, but nothing stood out for a long time until acting came along. Through an introductory theater course at California State University, Stanislaus, he came to acquire steadier footing as a probable practitioner and went on to enjoy amazing experiences at the Golden State institution. A non-speaking part in “Marat/ Sade proved to be the hook, with his first sizable role coming as Matthew Harrison Brady in “Inherit the Wind, which definitely kept his mouth motoring. “I didn’t have that outgoing sense about

me early on, but the social opportunities available through acting helped to initiate a change, Lopes said, noting that relocating to the City of Brotherly Love fostered his resolute attraction to growing as a performer. “You realize that you have a story to tell, and you want to honor everyone involved, particularly the people that you’re trying to reach. That conviction to his craft has kept Lopes extremely coveted as a hire, and he has assisted such local establishments as Hedgerow Theatre; Lantern Theater Co.; the Walnut Street Theatre; Luna Theater, 620 S. Eighth St.; and the Philadelphia Artists’ Collective, the brainchild of Bonetti and East Passyunk Crossing inhabitant Dan Hodge. He has also secured plaudits for his work with Historic Philadelphia, Inc., and American Historical Theatre, with George Washington as his charge in the latter. Aunt Mary has knitted me numerous pairs of socks, apparently in anticipation of such occasions. The socks come in very handy unless you happen to fall and break your leg, in which case, you will forget about the inconveniences of chemotherapy. See how easy it is to put a positive spin on this stuff? My medical experts are not sure whether the chemo treatments will give me diarrhea or constipation. I figure it would be interesting if it gave me alternating bouts of both — diarrhea on the even hours and constipation on the odd ones. What if I am the lucky one who hits a balance between the two? Apparently, that’s like hitting the chemo lottery. Hey, you cannot win if you do not play. Part of the procedure for getting chemotherapy, at least in my case, is that the surgeon places a port in your chest (any port in a storm?). I have decided to charge for incoming shipments to my port. The treatments will be every other week until Jan. 6 at which time I will emerge as someone who has an 85 percent chance of never having to bore you with a cancer column again. I like those odds better than the chance that the Sixers will play good basketball by then or that Chip Kelly’s team will be heading for a Super Bowl. In the meantime, it is expected that I will be napping more frequently (my wife claims that I often nap during sex anyway). I may be more grumpy, but not as grumpy as your average Republican candidate for the presidency who actually believes that we have been living through the Apocalypse (otherwise known as the Affordable Healthcare Act or the Curse of Obama). I may also become an expert on the nuanced taste of cardboard (I hear the KFC take out containers taste better than the food that’s contained inside). Apparently I will not lose my hair (something for which my barber is grateful) because this is the new and improved chemo. I am also grateful that I will not be bald. I am of the firm opinion that African-American men are the only folks that look great with bald heads. Most white men are smart enough not to shave their heads voluntarily because they realize that they will wind up resembling the vampire in “Nosferatu. I do not know why, anymore than I know why most of us Caucasians can not dunk a basketball. I just accept that fact while anticipating a film called “White Men Should Not Shave Their Heads starring Bradley Cooper because he’s in everything. The burden, as usual, will fall on my wife. She will keep watch over me during my treatments, wondering why she is spending so much time in Center City without shopping. +(*

y the time you read this column, I will have begun a series of chemotherapy treatments that drastically reduces the chance cancer will again invade my Adonis-like body (Adonis in his late 70s if he had kept away from that wild boar — read your mythology). Chemo works a lot like America operated in Vietnam. In Vietnam, we famously wanted to bomb that village into the Stone Age in order to save it. Chemo does pretty much the same thing to the cells of your body — good or cancerous — except the oncologist’s goal is to stop much short of the Stone Age or else someone else will be writing this column soon (Uncle Nunzi has already applied for my job). As a public service, I have compiled some informational data for those of you unfamiliar with chemotherapy treatments. Much of what you will find here is untrue, the cause of my humor is to make the unknown less frightening. Remember the adage — when you are intimidated by someone, picture them in their underwear? The good news, as I was told by my surgeon about losing about 25 pounds, is that you can eat what you want to gain the weight back. Then I got the bad news from my oncologist: During chemo treatments, your food often tastes like cardboard. If you are a big fan of cardboard, I guess this might be good news. So, the bottom line is I can eat all the cardboard I want until I fill my old pants again. This opens up all kinds of possibilities. When dining out, I can always order the cheapest item on the menu (or just eat the menu) and still be a happy diner. Now I can truthfully tell my wife that the dinner she just served me compares with the finest restaurants in Philadelphia. I have also been told that I will become extremely sensitive to cold. For the next six months, iced tea will become room temperature tea, which does not have quite the same ring to it. Ice cream will become, well, I don’t know, but, as a lover of ice cream, I will slurp it from a cereal bowl if need be. Apparently, I will not be able to reach into the freezer or walk on a tile floor without socks without getting really miserable. Why would I want to reach into a freezer if I cannot drink or eat anything cold is a question for another day. And in wintertime, walking on a cold tile floor without socks is an Comment at southphillyreview.com/opinion/ idiocy of which I am seldom guilty anyway. cardella.

5 WAYS TO SAVE MONEY ON SCHOOL GEAR Families are working to stretch their back-toschool shopping budgets further this year, according to a recent survey by the National Retail Foundation. But saving money isn’t just about how much you spend on supplies; it’s also about making school supplies and equipment last as long as possible. HERE ARE SOME TIPS FOR PROTECTING YOUR STUDENTS’ SCHOOL GEAR TO HELP STRETCH YOUR BUDGET – AND THEIR GEAR: TALK WITH CHILDREN ABOUT HANDLING TECH DEVICES. Kids will be kids, and sometimes that means they’ll be tough on their stuff. Unfortunately, their school-mandated tech devices – such as calculators, tablets and laptops – can’t always take the beating. To reduce the risk of accidental breakage, talk to kids about proper handling and storage of their devices and the potential risks for breakage when drops, spills and hard impacts occur. LIGHTEN THE BACKPACK LOAD. Between books and laptops, students tend to pack a lot of heavy items in their backpacks during the course of a school year. As the load increases, backpack zippers may break, and seams may tear from the daily stress. Reduce the wear and tear by ensuring your kids don’t over-pack their bags. Not only will this reduce strain on their backpacks, it will lighten the load on students’ backs as well. CONSIDER A PROTECTION PLAN. Research shows that some school essentials – such as backpacks and laptop batteries – break or VWRS IXQFWLRQLQJ ZLWKLQ WKH ÀUVW \HDUV RI use. To help keep costs down, many retailers offer reputable protection plans, such as SIMPLR, which can help repair or replace the equipment for free or a fraction of what you’d normally pay on your own.

SHARING ISN’T ALWAYS CARING. Even if your child handles his calculator or laptop with care, his friends might not. Establish guidelines with your kids at the start of the school year about what items can be shared with others at school and which cannot. For those things that can be shared, consider encouraging your child to establish ground rules when sharing with friends. Guidelines could include when the item should be returned, tasks for which the item will be used and an understanding that items will be handled with care. DON’T FORGET ABOUT BIKES. Kids who ride their bikes to school can be just as hard on their bikes as they are on their school supplies. A tune-up at the start of the school year can keep the bike running smoothly and help catch wear and tear, such as damaged spokes or worn tires and brake pads. For more information on protection plans for your child’s school supplies and tech devices, visit simplrplan.com.

ith so many cookouts coming up this month and beyond thanks to backto-school parties, graduation send-offs, Labor Day weekend and other outings, now is the perfect time to try this Guacamole Dip with Pumpkin Seeds from Diane Pecca. This snack favorite is sure to satisfy one’s guests and get the party started. The addition of pumpkin seeds really packs a crunch inside of this old goodie that visitors will be clamoring to try. According to the resident of the 2300 block of South 16th Street, the dip is easy to make, which is fortunate because she also added that it is the first dish to disappear at her cookouts. Make sure to make an extra serving because this concoction from the Girard Estate dweller will be gone before you know it. SPR

For one, the team of six full-time chefs is preparing a variety of dishes that include Chinese, Japanese and American cuisine. We aren’t talking small portions here — some 200 items are prepared on a daily basis covering the lunch and dinner buffets. “We have a huge selection; it’s one stop for everything, general manager Steve Chen said of the Whitman-based establishment that opened in June 2013. “We have everything for a pretty cheap price ($7.59 for lunch/$10.99 for dinner). Chen noted that Saturdays and Sundays tend to be the busier days. Head chef John Chen, who received his culinary training in China, started out in New York City, but due to picky clientele, he made the move to Philly to showcase his talents in preparing such items as stuffed shrimp and spare ribs. While obtaining his culinary education, besides learning how to cook, he picked up organizational skills, as well as how to maintain fresh food. For those looking to experiment with a little culinary venture of their own, the Teppanyaki team is sharing the recipe for Hibachi Chicken. No worries, this one is not measured out to buffet portions, as it tends to be one of the establishment’s more popular offerings. “Nine out of 10 customers take Hibachi

vent role model to excite their interest, with Bruce Lee enlivening their limbs. “I was into all sorts of sports before he came along, Robert said of the Chinese standout who garnered acclaim as an action film behemoth. “Once we saw him, it all made sense. “I was always athletic and endured my share of bruises and black eyes, Donna, a South Philly native like her mate, added. “Bruce Lee, like Robert said, gave us a new way to view what our bodies could do. There was no going back after becoming aware of his feats. Eager to enjoy not only physical enhancement, the lovebirds looked to sharpen their mental faculties and succeeded in securing them and deeper appreciation for their roles as torchbearers, titles that not even an 18-year hiatus could hinder. “We stepped away but kept going at it in our own way, Robert said, with his spouse specifying that they returned to the realm in 1999. “We wanted to find an incredibly traditional way to resume this with full enthusiasm. The rest is history. They initiated their training in Tang Soo Do, a Korean martial art that translates as “The Way of the Chinese Hand, in 2000 and have spent the last 15 years amassing memories and companions, with their tasks as instructors particularly influential to their attempts to kick conundrums aside.

“Teaching makes us better students, Donna, who, like her beau, holds the rank of Sa Bom Nim (4th Degree) Master, said of their educational outreach. “It helps us to refocus our skills and execute the moves with more oomph. That in itself is very exciting! Devotees of a discipline that never calls for complacency, the two are aiming for spring distinction, as April will find them testing for fifth-degree black belt status. With regards to the color of their adornments, Robert noted they don Midnight Blue belts since Tang Soo Do views black as a shade that does not become darker and thus signifies an end, such as death, with their hue representing more positive components, with water as an example element. “We train very hard and our learners do, too, Donna said. “That camaraderie helps to remove doubts about themselves. “We’re a team and a family, her better half contended. “When someone struggles yet looks up to find supportive faces, we all know that setbacks are nothing and that we’re going to get this done. SPR For more information, call 215-462-8671, or visit traditionaltangsoodo.com. hen Robert and Donna Wells became husband and wife in 1987, they initiated the most cherished application of two becoming one. Seven years into their ownership of Traditional Tang Soo Do of Philadelphia, 1816 S. 11th St., the partners are pursuing the pairing of mind and body as another durable couple and have helped numerous locals to combat their concerns and marshal their resources as martial arts practitioners. “We pride ourselves on extending the knowledge that we received to this community, Robert said from their East Passyunk Crossing-based establishment on Monday, the same day that he and his bride endowed four students with black belts. “When we can encourage personal and group growth and responsibility, we feel we’re helping people never to doubt themselves again. “That’s one of the beauties of the art, Donna added. “You gain an unwavering feeling of confidence that can flow into so many areas of your life. The 55- and 56-year-old residents of the 900 block of Fernon Street love lauding their pupils’ diligence and discipline, with youngsters especially benefiting from their emphasis on respect and resilience. When the youths realize the severity of their endeavors as crossover tools to establish better friendships, obtain improved grades or acquire other boons, they engender clarity akin to the sort that shepherds Robert. “I used to have bad anxiety, and martial arts came to serve as my medication, he revealed. “I’m just too composed now for anything to stop me. Coming from another mouth, that statement might sound indicative of an inflated ego, but Robert has far more regard for his field than he does his execution of its skills, deeming humility a chief result of his involvement. “Training can certainly be difficult, but there’s so much to learn about yourself, Donna divulged. “What becomes very important to remember is that though you’re only one person, you’re adding to the rich history of martial arts. The husband and wife proprietors noted that nothing motivates them more than encouraging the vanquishing of obstacles, with the almighty dollar nowhere on their radar. “We have other pursuits, so we’re not striving to become rich off this, Robert, also the owner of JP Catering, 2810 S. Ninth St., said. “South Philly is all about, or should be all about, respect for self and others. We work toward that here, and we’ve almost actualized our vision to have this location completely reflect the principles that inspired us. It’s a very wholesome journey.
