here are many compelling stories in Sal Paolantonio’s “Rizzo: The Last Big Man in Big City BVS >VWZORSZ^VWO >ZO\\W\U America that paint Francis La1][[WaaW]\ O\R zarro Rizzo Sr. in fantastically bright 1]c\QWZ[O\ 9S\gObbO colors. 1950 and 1990 has a personal tale to tell, and not all of them are rosy. “Rizzo, Theatre Exile’s 2015-16 season opener and a world premiere play from South Philadelphia’s Bruce Graham, opens in previews this week and runs for 26 performances until November 8 at the Christ Church Neighborhood Center. Exile’s founding artistic director, Joe Canuso, is himself a son of Girard Estate and grew up on the 2500 block of South Lambert Street, where his mother still lives as a faithful member of St. Monica’s Par-

ish. And though the theater company he founded thrives at 13th and Reed streets, Canuso and his team are staging “Rizzo in Old City to have the space they need to portray the iconic Philadelphian with ambition. “It feels right. It’s such a historic neighborhood, and this play feels very much about history, Canuso, the production’s director and a current resident of the 1100 block of Cross Street, said while sitting with the play’s star, Barrymore Award winner Scott Greer, himself a resident of the 800 block of

Federal Street. “People don’t have very nuanced feelings about him, the thespian said. “It’s either they love him or they hate him. Rizzo is, of course, the famous South Philly son of the 2300 block of South Rosewood Street, a grandson to an Italian immigrant, and a police footman who’d work his way up to police commissioner and finally the 119th mayor from 1972-’80. When I was a girl, my favorite lunch was soup and sandwich. If I brought a sandwich and a piece of fruit to school, I always bought a half-pint of milk and a bowl of soup to round out a hearty lunch.

To the Editor: I don’t regard the Papal visit as something to be “celebrated in any way. The “families on stage were neither inclusive nor representative of the families in our city, our country or for that matter, the world. Nowhere to be seen were any single-parent households, same-sex couples or any gays, lesbians, bisexuals or transgender people, for that matter. The world’s still flat, the last time certain folk checked. There’s also the troubling question of who’s paying for the Secret Service, National Guard, lost city work time and costs

borne by the suburbs. The troubling answer: you and I. I thought we were founded on the separation of church and state; since when did we become a theocracy? Did we really needed National Guardsmen as far south as Oregon Avenue and as north as Temple University to protect the peace? I found this exercise in militarism not only over the top, but scary. “God knows what it is a dress rehearsal for. We don’t need a visit from the Pope to “show us off on the world stage. The city speaks for itself daily. It is more vibrant and alive every day than it was during the Pope’s

visit, when it resembled an emptied-out war zone. For all of the big talk of helping the poor, imagine if the cost of all of this vanity hoopla, to both the taxpayer, and the World Families – was actually put to constructive use, say, feeding the hungry. >VWZ 0Zc[S\Y`O\bh A]cbV >VWZORSZ^VWO

To the Editor: Education and high quality school choices are the leading topics of discussion in many circles in the city of Philadelphia. Within that context, we ponder how we Comment at southphillyreview.com/opinion B y Ti n a G a r c e a u should re-examine our high schools so that our graduates are successful and thriving citizens. To do this, it is imperative that we design high schools that prepare students who are college and/or career ready. Universal Audenried Charter High School is doing both – college preparedness and career guidance. Audenried is the only charter high school in Pennsylvania that receives state funds for career and technical education program. This means graduates not only depart with a high school diploma, but have the opportunity to leave with a certification that allows them to work in a field immediately after high school. Audenried offers Health Related Technology (Pre-Nursing), Culinary Arts, Automotive Technology, Electrical & Construction Trades, Communication Technology, and Pre-Engineering. Our students take these courses and excel. This is exemplified in the 17 nursing seniors who passed the Certified Nursing Assistant examination last year. In our culinary discipline, one student recently secured 3B3@</::G 5@/B34C:( A]cbV >VWZZg P]`\ [caWQ WQ]\a 4`O\YWS /dOZ]\ eV] an internship at Reading Terminal MaraS`dSR Oa bVS U`O\R [O`aVOZ O\R 8S``g 0ZOdOb S\X]gSR A]cbV 0`]OR Ab`SSb aWb ket. sylvania, Temple University, SEPTA and many more institutions and businesses across the city. Students at Audenried are being prepared for college as well. This month, all students in grades 9 - 11 will be taking the PSAT in an effort to expose them to the test. During the school day, SAT prep classes for juniors and seniors are offered. We also have 24 juniors and seniors earning college credits via enrollment at the Community College of Philadelphia. That number is on track to increase for the spring. Of the four full-time counselors on staff, there is one whose sole focus is guiding students through the college admissions process. We have several opportunities for our students to grow outside of academics and their career pathways. Many are aware of our championship basketball team, awardwinning debate team whom we hope competes on a state and national level this year along with our Reid TV, a student-run television and production studio. The power of education is a choice. People often ask how will you measure Universal Audenried’s success; we will measure our students by the choices they have upon graduation – college, technical school, career or military. We want to provide registrants with as many choices and paths as possible. Since taking the helm of Audenried under the School District of Philadelphia Renaissance Initiative, Universal Companies has been able to increase academic performances on state exams, increase enrollment in the Culinary, Healthcare & Diesel Academies, double the graduation rate, increase student attendance and reduce student incidents. To learn more about Audenried and its Career Technical Education program, visit our exhibit booth during the High School Fair tomorrow from 3 to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, Hall G. omicide investigators, acting on a tip, developed information on Sunday that led to the arrest of Pedro Redding for his supposed involvement in the Oct. 6 beating and shooting of Kiesha Jenkins, born Stephen Jenkins, of the 1700 block of South 32nd Street, in Hunting Park. On the earlier date, police found the 22-year-old at 2:33 a.m. and arranged transport to Albert Einstein Hospital, where personnel pronounced her dead 20 minutes later. Police believe that Redding, whom they charged with murder, criminal conspiracy, and firearms violations, likely committed the >SR`] @SRRW\U crime as an extension of his desire and that of three cohorts to rob Jenkins. The Philadelphia Police Department is offering a $20,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest and conviction in the matter. BS[^S`W\U bVS [ObbS` Police arrested a South-of-South man for allegedly stabbing his estranged wife. At 5:30 p.m. Sept. 30, authorities responded to the 2500 block of Webster Street for a radio call of a person with a weapon, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. They learned from the complainant that her estranged beau, who also resides on the block, walked into her residence with a steak knife in hand, bellowed “I’m going to kill you, and attacked her as she tried to rise from a couch. She received multiple wounds to her face and one to her chest before family members temporarily subdued the supposed aggressor. Law enforcement agents transported the victim, who had a valid protection from abuse order against her alienated spouse, to Presbyterian Hospital for treatment of her injuries, which resulted in approximately 15 stitches. They arrested 57-yearold Ronald Andrews and charged him with possession of an instrument of crime, attempted murder, simple and aggravated assault, recklessly endangering another person, harassment, burglary, criminal trespassing and violation of a protection order. He will have a preliminary hearing today.

BcSaROg PZ]]Rg BcSaROg Police detained a Grays Ferry resident for allegedly assaulting a female in Lower Moyamensing. At 3 a.m. Sept. 29, authorities reported to Ninth Street and Oregon Avenue for a person-with-a-weapon call. Meeting with the juvenile complainant, they learned that a known individual punched her and smashed her head and face into a vehicle and on the ground, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. A witness tended to the victim as she drifted in and out of consciousness, observing swelling to her face and blood coming from her nose. Law enforcement officials, who arranged for transport to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, broadcast the supposed attacker’s description and lastknown address. As they surveyed the area of 29th and Reed streets an hour later, they observed Chelsey Kane exiting a taxi. Following positive identification from the witness, they arrested the 20-year-old resident of the 1300 block of South 29th Street and charged her with simple and aggravated assault and recklessly endangering another person.

BOfW\U bOfW [ObbS` Police arrested a man who reportedly drew a gun on a woman in Girard Estate. At approximately 11 a.m. Sunday, authorities ventured to the 2300 block of South 22nd Street for a report of a personwith-a-gun. The complainant told them that she had been exiting a car when a taxi pulled up behind her, with the operator supposedly beginning to blow his horn and shout obscenities at her. When she responded, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said, an argument ensued, and the driver allegedly barked “I will kill you, motioning toward his waist. The woman started to walk at a faster pace and heard the trunk of the cab open. When she looked back, the motorist reportedly approached her with a gun in his hand, pointing the weapon in her direction. She escaped the scene, but the cab did, too, before police could arrive. Detectives contacted 215-Get-A-Cab, and the operator of the vehicle in question came to police headquarters. Following positive identification by the complainant, they arrested Shawn Wells, of the 2500 block of South Newkirk Street, and charged him with possession of an instrument of crime, firearms violations, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person and making terroristic threats. Obtaining a warrant, they recovered a loaded firearm at the home of the 43-year-old, who posted his $50,000 bail and awaits an Oct. 27 preliminary hearing.

have always considered South Philly the perfect combination of nostalgia and possibility. As an old soul, I definitely appreciate time-tested tales and wonder what living among those stories’ protagonists and antagonists might have yielded. As a present participant in local life, I also admire what people are looking to accomplish no matter their pursuits and love being a cheerleader for their endeavors. Combining the past and the present, with a nod to the future, I offer a list of what I deem South Philly’s greatest contributions to the world.

ast November, the South Philly Review covered the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board’s (PGCB) awarding of a gaming license to Stadium Casino, LLP – a joint venture between Greenwood Gaming & Entertainment, Inc. and the Cordish Companies. The casino, set to call 900 Packer Ave. home, is now moving through City Council with a bill that 2nd District Councilman Kenyatta Johnson introduced last week. After Live! Hotel and Casino submitted a master plan to the City of Philadelphia Planning Commission in mid-September, Cordish Companies were forced to tweak a few design elements and got an approval on Oct. 6, with Johnson’s zoning bill setting the wheels in motion for construction. “This development project presents a great opportunity for the City of Philadelphia, and we will perform our due diligence during the approval process. Accordingly, community and stakeholder concerns will be fully examined prior to the passage of any authorizing legislation, the councilman said in a statement. In November, with the awarding of the license, Mayor Michael A. Nutter offered a similar sentiment. However, even though the license has been granted and the bill has been introduced, that does not mean testimony cannot be heard in City Hall. “The license has been granted, and all of the questions surrounding jobs and diversity will be fully examined during the hearing process, Steve Cobb, Johnson’s director of legislation, said. He’s referring to a couple things: the accusations of racism within Cordish’s company leveled by the Rev. Al Sharptonfounded National Action Network (with which the Black Clergy of Philadelphia and Vicinity disagreed) and a bill hearing that will come before the City Council’s Committee on Rules. @7HH= Q]\bW\cSR T`][ ^OUS Philadelphia that Rizzo inhabited was one of the most fascinating and turbulent eras for the city – from post-WWII idealism, to the huge loss of manufacturing industry, to the rise of a countercultural demand for equal rights from African Americans, women and gay people, it was a complex chapter in the city’s history. Rizzo famously cherished law and order, seeing most issues in black and white terms: the law-abiders and the crooks. Canuso and Graham gleefully interviewed and sought out oral histories from some of Rizzo’s associates, enemies and cheerleaders. They found Marty Weinberg, his longtime confidant and mayoral advisor; Andrea Mitchell, a precocious reporter who bravely withstood the late mayor’s famous intimidation tactics; former state senator Vince Fumo; and former mayor and frequent Rizzo adversary, W. Wilson Goode, some of whom will make appearances on stage at Christ Church. “Much of the criticism of Sal’s book is that he was too lenient and that he was painted with too much sympathy, Greer explained. “A portion of the audience will think we’re being way too kind, and a portion of the audience thinks we’re smearing his good name. Canuso admits that Rizzo still riles people up and makes for ripe storytelling. “Passions run that strong. Most people, over time, become a little objective. You start to see the gray areas, the show’s director said. “With Rizzo, it’s still hard to find those gray areas. SITTING IN THE Christ Church lobby, Canuso engaged with a black custodian, a man who is likely in his 40s or 50s. He asked the man if he has any memories of Rizzo. “I lived through Rizzo, the man said. “He did things you wouldn’t imagine. He was a very prejudiced guy to me and he didn’t mind letting you know it. He went on to detail a common practice amongst Rizzo’s police force of breaking up crowds of four or five African Americans, even if they were waiting for a bus, with a nightstick. “He was and remains a very controversial figure, and

that’s probably going to be the case for a long, long time. I don’t know that you’re ever going to get some consensus, Cindy Little, chief historian for the Philadelphia History Museum, said. “If you talk to people, particularly a lot of people in the African American community who experienced what was euphemistically known as heavy policing or [people] in the emerging counterculture, you’re not going to find the warm fuzzy stories. She added, however, that times were tough in nearly every American city where neighborhoods were emptying out and de-industrialization was punishing purse strings.

Jody Della Barba, a resident of the 2500 block of South 18th Street, Rizzo’s longtime colleague, and a 2015 South Philly Review Difference Maker, has a much kinder view and loves the man for being a stand-up politician who believed in the little guy. “His legacy is not what it should be. He was a great man, and those who berate him were either arrested by him, are jealous or just plain haters, she said, having spent years on his campaign trail, organizing dinners in his honor and even writing his Christmas cards. “He surely took no crap from lying users, crooks and criminals. He never asked a cop or anyone to do something he would not do himself. He was not a racist or a bigot, but that was an easy label to put on him by the crumbs he encountered. Della Barba’s not a very big fan of Paolantonio’s book, either, and defers to Adrian Lee, a former Daily Bulletin reporter, as the biographical go-to scribe. Greer and Canuso, who held a public reading of the play back in the spring of 2014, have seen first-hand how visceral and powerful reactions have been to the play. During a famous scene in Rizzo’s history, one that makes it into the play, Rizzo submitted to a polygraph test and was found to be lying. When a stage direction was read aloud, “Rizzo lied, an audience member let out a loud “YES! Though the Rizzos moved out of Girard Estate for the Germantown/Mt. Airy neighborhoods, he famously returned to South Rosewood Street before every big election, and a St. Monica Mass for his funeral was wildly attended. The processional for his funeral was admired by thousands and thousands of Philadelphians, standing five-deep along the route. “Whether he lived there his whole career [or not], he was born and raised there, and he was Italian American. That’s enough for people to say he was a native son, Canuso, who has nuanced feelings on the late politician to this day, said. “Oh yeah, he was a God, Greer chimed in. Canuso added that, for many South Philadelphians, he seemed to speak to them and for them. “You speak our language. You talk about the things we feel. You’re expressing what we feel in our hearts. +(* Contact Staff Writer Bill Chenevert at bchenevert@southphillyreview.com or ext. 117. Comment at southphillyreview.com/news/ features.

hile Nick DiCroce III would not mind heading to Hawaii to enjoy endlessly sunny days, he also appreciates the appeal of London’s mist and Norway’s castles. Possessing a profound affinity for eerie elements of existence, the 29-year-old is reveling in his fifth campaign as a haunter for Terror Behind the Walls, Eastern State Penitentiary’s seasonal scream-inducing delight. “It’s in my DNA, the Lower Moyamensing dweller said of his fascination with fostering fear. “I believe many people enjoy having alter egos, and when I take on these roles, I’m exploring different aspects of my identity and opening more outlets for my creativity. Employed as a “titan, DiCroce

has won the honor of executing every assignment for the Fairmountsituated attraction, which is celebrating its 25th season as a haven for Halloween fanatics. Deeming each task a chance to help visitors to address the value to fear, with duties that call for increased mobility being his favorites, the performer noted “haunt fever hit him in August, and he has enjoyed sending heart rates into triple digits since September, with three more weeks of watching guests lose their composure as his welcomed destiny. “You have to feed off their fright, or you’re not going to make it as a haunter, DiCroce opined. “There has to be a grittiness to you that helps to draw them out of their comfort zones. Adding that uncertainty helps

B?<;IJOB;I individuals to re-evaluate their sense of comfort and could intensify their humility, the actor contends that he and his peers thrive on making Terror Behind the Walls’ six elements unforgettable reminders that what goes bump in the night can serve as a perennial aide in acknowledging the need for safety and the strength of the forces that call for people to alter their plans and grow as members of society. He acquired such knowledge five years ago when he met with rejection on his first audition for what has garnered acclaim as the nation’s top haunted attraction. Having passed through the prison as a patron and having wondered about its workings when attending middle school just around the corner from the site, he wanted to add his enthusiasm to its mystique and though the negation provided an initial barrier to that plan, DiCroce persisted due to his perpetual “hunger for success. “I don’t believe in setbacks, he confessed. “I didn’t go through any sadness when I was rejected because I knew, despite what I heard, that I could push myself harder and win a job as a haunter. The adage that persistence pays off proved true for DiCroce, who captured

best actor honors two years ago. Contending that a combination of support from his contemporaries, including many South Philly denizens, and trust in his skill set have enabled him to become a reliable hire, the fomenter of fear finds that no matter one’s endeavors, passion must be the primary part of every undertaking. “If you’re involved with something that sparks you, you have to be honest with yourself and strive to love every second of it, DiCroce said. “For me, this is the perfect way to stay active mentally and physically. It makes me wish the Halloween season were just a little longer, too, because it’s that much fun. ALWAYS AN ADMIRER of “scary things, the diverse character grew up a devotee of Halloween and experienced immense satisfaction through donning costumes and receiving goodies from fellow Southwest Philly dwellers. He credits his father, a professional bodybuilder, with giving him an enhanced understanding of professionalism, which he exercised for five years as the manager of a Philadelphia International Airport-situated bookstore. “I’d say I’ve always wanted to explore the

deeper meaning of life and get at the heart of what it means to be human, DiCroce said of his introspective nature. “You can’t really afford to be one-dimensional if you want to make lasting observations, and I think it’s always been within me to test my ability to adapt. The malleable individual needed to use that blessing when losing his patriarch to cancer. He eventually moved to Arkansas to comfort his mother and following a two-year period of pondering his potential, he returned to Philadelphia, finding quarters in numerous South Philly locations, including a haunters-heavy abode on the 2100 block of Mifflin Street. “I had a strong belief that this was within me, DiCroce said of joining their ranks. “It is great to have warm, sun-drenched days and terrific experiences to call your own, but it’s also great to analyze what startles us and to find out why we like the dark and somewhat spooky parts of life, too. As he hits the meaty part of his fifth sojourn through the historic prison, DiCroce, whose biography for Eastern State notes “Through hard work and the blessing of God, my adventure still continues, lets

his energy for engendering shrieks compel him to be equally committed when he tackles music productions and art projects. A fan of old school, hip hop and old punk rock, he described his connection with music as “a mind-opening infatuation and noted his compositions, including many instrumentals, have horror aspects to them. With regards to his penchant for graffiti art, DiCroce stated that his output inspires mental and visual investigations into what displays of creativity can teach observers and consumers about the artists and themselves. “Much of what we are exposed to today seems safe and ready-made, he said. “There’s little mystery to what we receive to make much of a difference in our lives. With Terror Behind the Walls, we’re dealing with fear and death, and I want to extend that a bit by saying that if we don’t find enthusiasm within the creative process, we die a bit each day. Me? I need to create to live. SPR Visit easternstate.org/halloween. Contact Editor Joseph Myers at jmyers@southphillyreview.com or ext. 124. Comment at southphillyreview.com/news/lifestyles.

ars is enjoying a resurgence. In movie theaters, audiences thrill to NASA’s fictional rescue of astronaut Matt Damon stranded on Mars. NASA makes headlines when in real life it finds evidence of water on the planet. Cool. Except real life isn’t so cool. NASA is so broke, it might as well be passing a hat around in Times Square. There will not be any manned( or womanned) space missions to Mars by NASA in your lifetime or mine except in the movies. Maybe our good friends the Russians would give us a lift. Otherwise, the only chance of MARS space travel by Americans will be through private enterprise. We will have to hope they do not plant a flag advertising potato chips. The 2015 federal budget includes $17.5 billion for NASA. Sound like a lot of money? Americans spend over half as much each year on pizza, a percentage likely to grow while NASA’s budget does not. That amount represents about .5 percent of federal spending, a flat-line figure that represents a loss in real dollars each year. In January 2004, President George W. Bush set a goal for his second term to send astronauts to Mars by 2020. He proposed spending $12 billion on space exploration, but most of that would have come from shifting money from existing programs in NASA. The proposal quickly died. Republicans have proposed increasing NASA’s space exploration program by $200 million, but here’s the punch line - they would do so by slashing $300 million from existing programs NASA uses to study climate change. This is not to say that Democrats are much better when it comes to supporting NASA-led space exploration. In my view, the Left also views manned space exploration as an expensive trinket. Call it the “little red schoolhouse argument. Take the tax dollars you do not want spent on a program and convert the figure into the number of little red schoolhouses you could purchase for the same amount to illustrate your displeasure. Federal funding for the arts has met the same fate as funding for NASA more because of cramped thinking than financial necessity. As with space exploration, polls seem to show consistent support for funding of the arts, but rhe arts suffered a 40

percent cut in federal assistance in 1995 and really have never recovered. The best supporters on the Hill have been able to do is stave off further cuts in the 2015 budget. The National Endowment for the Humanities, the main vehicle for federal funding of the arts, receives about $146 million less than it received in 1995. Republicans like to argue the government should not be deciding for you which arts programs your tax dollars should support. Public radio and public television are looked upon by them as nothing more than as bastions of liberal propaganda. Both public television and radio have been able to survive the budget cuts, but not without pain. But it is the arts in our major cities that have suffered most. Locally, the prestigious Philadelphia Orchestra is threatened with financial disaster. Much the same situation exists with the Philly Pops. Most of our theater companies exist on the brink of turning out the lights. Private donations have not been able to keep pace. The arts in Philadelphia, like the arts around the nation, are finding they depend on an aging donor base. Younger people are not as interested in supporting the arts, some say, because they lack much education in the arts. As an example of the plight of the arts in Philadelphia, take the Philadelphia Theatre Company to which my wife and I subscribe. Years ago, its plays were performed at an aging theater called PLAYS AND PLAYERS on Delancey Street. Back in the ’60s, the entity was unable to complete one of its seasons and subscribers lost whatever money they had paid for the tickets of the shows that were not performed. We and many other subscribers stuck with the theater company, and it became financially viable again. In October 2007, the Philadelphia Theater Company was able to purchase its own theater and opened the beautiful and modern Suzanne Roberts Theater at Broad and Lombard streets. But the financial cloud that hangs over all the arts in Philadelphia did not disappear. PTC needed to declare bankruptcy a couple of years ago and only recently has been able to rebound and obtain ownership of the theater again. When one of the leading Republican candidates for president, Ben Carson, publicly views safety net programs as “goodies, you can only imagine how both parties view space exploration or the arts. But we lose something as a people when the wonder of space travel or the beauty of the arts loses regard as something essential to our identity as Americans. I am arguing we need more support for those “goodies in our federal budget because they help identify who we are. +(* Comment at southphillyreview.com/opinion/ cardella.

Your favorite pizza eating event is back again for its 7th installment, but with a bit of a twist this time.

S C I P M Y L PIZZA

The South Philly Review will be presenting the Pizza Olympics event a little differently this year. Instead of the usual one night feeding frenzy, for the first time ever the South Philly Review will be selling Pizza Certificates, which will entitle the purchaser to sample one slice of pizza or listed item/discount from each of the participating shops listed on the certificate, then you can cast a vote for your favorites in the following categories: Best Crust, Most Creative, Veggie, White and Overall Favorite. Once you return the completed certificate to the South Philly Review office, you will be automatically entered into a drawing where you have the chance to win a SPR prize pack including tickets to local attractions and events! Certificates are only $15 and are on sale now at the South Philly Review office located at 12th & Porter Sts.. A portion of all ticket sales will benefit local area schools. Hurry, certificate is only valid 9/28 through 10/26purchase yours today!

eath and taxes have had a stranglehold on assertions of life’s constants for ages. How about we add the deliciousness of macaroni and cheese to form a trinity of certainties? Debbie Robb, of the 300 block of Mercy Street, would surely advocate for enhanced estimation of the delight and provides her version for our chewing pleasure. The Pennsport inhabitant prepares the dish by wrapping it with foil but suggested that leaving your rendition coverless will give it a crispy top if that is your desire. If you ask us, either way will provide surefire gooey goodness. +(*

French fries is needed here. The greasy, sometimes soggy hand-cut fries served in upscale restaurants do not compare with the light, crisp, thin fries served at the Mercer Cafe. All they required was a bit of salt. I like cole slaw (add $.95) with a sandwich and fries. I thought this version contained too much mayonnaise, but, at least it was not swimming in vinegar. I sipped an ice tea with lemon ($3.25), which was a nottoo-strong brew. From the burgers, we decided on a Mercer Cafe specialty ($11.95). This was ordered rare and topped with Gorgonzola cheese, mushrooms and caramelized onions. The well-seasoned beef received placement on a slightly toasted buttery brioche bun. A small mound of not-at-all-salty chips and pickles came with the hearty burger. In thinking about junior high and high school lunches, of course we thought of milk. Chocolate milk ($2.25) was listed on the menu. I think adults and kids of all ages love it. I could see bits of chocolate syrup clinging to the glass. If you have not visited The Navy Yard, you should. Children of all ages will take delight in the battle ships docked there. From my vantage point at The Mercer Cafe, I watched low-flying planes making their way to the airport. The establishment is lined with large windows so kids of all ages can watch the planes as well. Mercer Cafe was busy during my recent lunch. It serves tasty homemade food that may take you back to childhood memories, too. Three tips of the toque to The Mercer Cafe. +(*

hen seeking a second opportunity to run a restaurant, Hong Kham Soum, remembering her days as a resident on the 600 block of Ritner Street, hoped a return to South Philly would lead locals to dub her culturally-inspired creations fine additions to the environs’ bustling culinary scene. Since opening AmeriThai, 1244 Snyder Ave., 13 months ago, she has indeed become the owner of an Asian sensation, with her ample options coming to count many devotees. “It’s very thrilling when I hear ‘Yes, it’s quite good,’ the proprietor, nicknamed “Hui, said of operations at the Lower Moyamensing location. “The enthusiasm for our food makes me feel like such a part of the community. A resident of Ardmore, where she helmed Siamese Princess before making the local leap, the 37-year-old praised AmeriThai’s surroundings and gregarious individuals as boons to her process and progress. As the daughter of a seasoned chef whose matriarchal means included encouraging her child to join in the jubilation of food preparation, the overseer came to the United States 16 years ago and had been yearning to open another establishment before last fall’s windfall. “Having your own business can be very interesting, especially when your products have to do with your heritage, the Thailand native said. “I grew up in a family where it was natural to help with making meals, so when I make the items here, I want for them to reflect my love of my background. The 12-section mean features a mix of

uncommon and traditional Thai selections, with Soum noting that she aims for a balance of sweet and spicy flavors. No Asian provisions-offering space would be complete without a robust variety of noodle-heavy plates, with the businesswoman deciding on sharing her Pad Thai recipe. “It’s a very familiar item in my country, so I’m glad that so many people enjoy what I do with it, Soum, who, in addition to this rendition’s inclusion of shrimp, also offers it with chicken, pork, beef, tofu, duck or crab, said. “We have people of all ethnicities compliment it. Their reactions make me happy with my choice to open AmeriThai in South Philadelphia.

hen I was a girl, my favorite lunch was soup and sandwich. If I brought a sandwich and a piece of fruit to school, I always bought a half-pint of milk and a bowl of soup to round out a hearty lunch. The batches prepared by the lunch ladies at Lower Merion High were always homemade soup. Chicken noodle, vegetable and tomato, with or without rice, were among my favorites. If I ate lunch at home, my mom always served Campbell’s unless there were leftovers from the homemade soup she whipped up on Friday nights. These memories went through my mind during a delightful lunch at the Mercer Cafe at The Navy Yard, which is open for breakfast and lunch on weekdays. The room is painted in a calming blue with light color wood butcher block tables and comfortable black metal chairs. It occurred to me that the Mercer Cafe reflects the old-fashioned or rather classic luncheonettes of my childhood. A mug of rich dark hot La Colombe coffee ($2.50) was warming on an early afternoon. Although patrons can order an omelette for lunch (breakfast ends at 10:30 a.m.), I went straight for the soup and sandwich. In fact, I almost missed the soup listed at the bottom of the menu. The selection of the day was tomato basil ($4 for a bowl). It was prepared with the land-of-the-season tomatoes that were peeled and seeded before they met a whirl in the blender or food processor. Basil is a strong herb, but the right touch was used here. It was also pureed and added a burst of flavor. A hint of cream removed the tomatoes’ natural acidity, and a few croutons appeared on top of the soup. As a girl, I loved grilled cheese, a BLT, tuna, egg salad or a turkey club. The Mercer Cafe builds a fine turkey club ($8.50). The cooks use Le Bus bread, which is a plus. I like the bakery’s Pullman white and wheat. Roasted breast of turkey formed the base for my sandwich. It was real turkey, nothing salty and processed. After the bread was lightly toasted, a schmeer of mayonnaise became essential. Crisp bacon, hearts of romaine and ripe tomatoes were piled onto the toast after a generous layer of roast turkey breast. A sandwich is naked without pickles. I like the half-done variety. I ordered fries (add $.95) that came out piping hot. A note on

et to turn 26 on Tuesday, Dana Ricci describes her quarter-century-old existence as “an interesting journey teeming with potential to make each day a standout occasion. For the last year, she has endeavored to fill fellow females with that fervor as a hoop dance instructor at Women’s Fitness Solutions, 1324 E. Passyunk Ave. “Hooping is definitely a fun way to exercise, but I see its overall purpose being to help you to feel better about yourself, which it can accomplish if you don’t limit your comprehension of the activity, Ricci said within the Passyunk Square-situated business. “I think of it as a form of meditation, for example, and as something that can give a person different perspectives on life issues and goals. The Newbold dweller offers a 7:30 p.m. class each Wednesday, enthusiastically seeking to encourage students to accept that hooping need not be only an example of novelty but rather a gateway to continuous growth. That she has crafted that philosophy only three years after her lackluster inaugural experience with a hoop proves her appreciation for the art and its ability to infuse individuals with a sense of community. “Being a hooper has helped me to realize even more just how much fun it is to be physically active while also putting me in contact with great people, the friendly

ASSISTING OTHERS IN their quests for discovery and immersion into larger communities based on trust and experimentation has always proven appealing to the New Jersey native. With a strong interest in musical theater, she contemplated a Broadway career, but her path would not yield a move to New York. The Big Apple’s loss became Philadelphia’s gain, as she enrolled at Temple University, studying journalism and Spanish. “This city is very vibrant and pretty conducive to becoming very aware of yourself, Ricci said of her life in the City of Brotherly Love, with her South Philly tenure commencing in 2012, the same year as her introduction to hooping. She started to understand its possibilities through the annual Burning Man gathering in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert, which encourages, among its 10 principles, an emphasis on self-expression. Through the trip and acquired awareness of the South Philly Spin Coalition, which she came to promote as a board member and through which she has engendered

many friendships, she began to believe more diligently in the beauty of hooping, tabbing it “a unique and on-the-rise passion. “We’re all capable of producing art, which, you know, can be one of those words that make people confused because the definition of it is so open, Ricci said. “However, I see this as my way to contribute to the lives of others and to bolster my own enjoyment of my time on this earth. Her Hooping with Dana website adds that she is “dedicated to creating unforgettable experiences with my performances. She has used that ambition to score opportunities in Spain and Germany, the former including the thrilling invitation to participate in a Fulbright conference, and many United States-situated chances to champion her affinity. Locally, she has watched whirlers respond joyously through stops at the St. Thomas Aquinas Center, 1700 Fernon St., and Bardascino Park, 10th and Carpenter streets. “The physicality of it is so important to me, Ricci said of her connection to hooping. “It has meditative qualities, too, and acts as a form of therapy. People often want to think of it only as child’s play, but you can become really accomplished with it.
