The latest victim is Bella

ater work, is scurrying to save money its overseers have dumped into the church, find a new home, and figure out where to stage and rehearse future productions. “We have been fighting an uphill battle since last season when our desires for a long-term lease extension fell on deaf ears, Gregory

Campbell, the company’s founder and producing artistic director, wrote in a statement to subscribers and supporters. “In the summer we were informed that the Episcopal Diocese of Philadelphia has plans to close the 166-year-old parish, leaving the congregation and our company with no home. The bad news comes in a pair: Luna is homeless, but Crucifixion stands as a powerful reminder of South Philly’s long and rich black history, which gets threatened with every church shuttered for money’s

sake. Even Campbell acknowledges his company’s fate is secondary to a larger problem. “I’m upset for a good reason, but I feel worse for the people who put their body and soul into this church over the last 150 years. It was a church on a comeback, and they were really trying to fix things by partnering with us, generating more community involvement, he said. Legendary local singing heroine Marian Anderson sang at Crucifixion as a child. ASS :C</ ^OUS ,,

To the Editor: A thank you is not enough for the fire department of the above district located on 13th and Shunk streets. We noticed our smoke alarm kept going off, an indication that we needed a new battery, but we could not find the necessary replacement. We decided to stop at the fire station and inquire about our problem. To my surprise, they told me that the new smoke alarms do not have batteries anymore, but instead, they last 10 years. I immediately checked to see if they had any new alarms, and there were three left. The firemen were available that same day

to install the new alarms for us. This was a wonderful favor that I did not expect. We gained trust in humanity. We are both in our 80s, so you could image how we felt. The sincerity and love that came with the smoke alarms was more than we expected. We wish all the luck and love in the world to these great guys, who are completely unselfish and caring for our community. People should know that this station has our interests at heart. 1O`[SZO 2W;O`bW\] A]cbV >VWZORSZ^VWO

:]RUS g]c` Q][^ZOW\ba To the Editor: Complaining about the weather is a large part of our everyday conversations. I am guilty of this, as the summer left me frustrated with the intense heat and humidity. After watching the destruction in South Carolina, Mexico, New Orleans and countless other places that suffer very severe weather, I realized how very fortunate we are to live in Philadelphia. Yes, we do have very uncomfortable weather at times, but we do not have to experience mass devastation and loss. Our city has many flaws, but when it comes to weather, we must admit that we are very protected. When there is a tornado or hurricane prediction, we always seem to dodge the bullet, usually only suffering the remnants of the storm. We sometimes have severe weather but with little after effects, and that is because we are anchored in and live in nice sturdy brick houses that even the strongest winds cannot blow down. Our changing seasons may be one of the reasons we do not experience these catastrophic storms while so many are not as fortunate, and we can only hope that they receive the help that they need to recover from all the damage suffered and begin to rebuild their lives. 2SPPWS @caaW\] A]cbV >VWZORSZ^VWO

“People have mixed opinions, and some of them, frankly, think their vote doesn’t matter and that they don’t have a voice. Joe Clark, 2500 block of South Garnet Street

To the Editor: Does any argument remain about all the downed power lines, the broken water mains and gas exploding all around us and the havoc inflicted on thousands? Neglect and misplaced priorities from blind-sided “Maybe it’s because people have so many commitments and are so busy. Some people, even with all the advertisements, forget about Election Day when it arrives. Theresa Minutella, 2600 block of South Rosewood Street

leaders remain glaring and so obvious that nobody can deny or dispute those facts. Even our railways have gone straight to hell, with trains derailing, crashing, and causing partial bridge collapses, the spewing of dangerous chemicals, and the added necessity of evacuations and displacement, not to mention the loss of human life. There is no way that snow, ice storms, heavy rains, hurricanes, and floods are going to leave us any time soon, but right now, much good can be realized because of all this travail and calamity - the wonderful chance to get our economy perking again by putting thousands of our hurting masses back to work by rebuilding, repairing, and replacing bridges, highways, water passages, gas mains, and pipes. Put all overhead wires in containers placed underground in waterproof conduits or channels. We just cannot wait any longer to do what has to be and should have been done a long time ago. I have been writing and complaining for years about what I saw coming and is happening all around us nationwide. You cannot expect to change Mother Nature, but we can wage one heck of a battle on the carnage and mayhem she is handing us. We have the chance to put people back to work and to help put our sad economy back on track. I fervently pray our leaders see and seize this opportunity by stepping out of their cocoon. We are all watching and waiting, but I seriously doubt it. Don’t you just love what they are doing to the people and our country? The richest land in the world? For whom, I might ask. Certainly not for most of us but definitely for the already-filthy rich who have forgotten all of us. 4`O\Y 1OdOZZO`] A]cbV >VWZORSZ^VWO Comment on these letters or topics at southphillyreview.com/opinion/letters.

“Indifference often occurs because change never really seems to come. I think my vote, like every vote, counts, so people should exercise their rights. If they don’t, they shouldn’t complain. Michael Enright, 1500 block of Porter Street

t 7:13 p.m. Oct. 28, authorities responding to a radio call for a person screaming and reported to the 2700 block of South Street. Meeting with the complainant, they learned she had entered the Schuylkill River Trail under the South Street Bridge at Walnut Street and was jogging south when an unknown figure grabbed her from behind and held his hands over her mouth, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. She has able to bite his hands and fingers to free herself and ran from the scene injury-free. She described the aggressor as white, 20 to 30 years old and 5-foot-8; having an average build, facial pimples and long brown, wavy, shoulderlength hair; being clean-shaven; and wearing a dark hoodie and dark, baggy jeans. :ObS \WUVb Zc\OQg A man robbed a Grays Ferry-situated watering hole last week. The at-large criminal entered Giffi ’s Sports Bar, 1348 S. 33rd St., just before 11 p.m. Oct. 28 and placed a gun to the neck of a complainant, instructing her to remove everything from her pockets, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. He scored her G-Shock watch, monthly SEPTA transpass and $200 before ordering the other complainant to give him the contents of the cash register, approximately $500. He directed the victims and a witness to walk toward the back of the bar and fled northbound on 33rd Street. The trio described him as black, 40 to 50 years old, 5-foot-6 to 5-foot-8 and 180 pounds; having a medium complexion; wearing a khaki-colored hat with a brim, a scarf over his face, a tan jacket and dark pants; carrying a black book bag; and armed with a gun. 1VSO^ O\bWQa Authorities are after a man who attempted to rob a Girard Estate business. An employee of Family Dollar, 2201 Oregon Ave., heard the front door of the establishment open at 8:49 p.m. Sunday and started to look up and down the aisles for the potential shopper when she spotted a male tying a bandana around his face, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. When she said “Excuse me, sir, the figure pulled up his hood, took out a black handgun and started toward her, leading the worker to run out the front door despite his warning that he would shoot her. The victim escaped injury-free and reported that the offender removed nothing. She described him as black and 5-foot-6 to 5-foot8; wearing a gray hoodie, a military baseball hat, blue jeans and dark sneakers; and armed with a black gun. 7) Festivals: Don’t you just love having weekends where you wonder just how you will manage to venture to all the festivals and celebrations in South Philly? 6) Proximity to family and friends: Though it can seem massive,

10) Churches: I am a practicing Roman Catholic who belongs to the National Shrine of St. Rita of Cascia, which I contend is the most welcoming church in South Philly and possibly the city. Subjectivity aside, our neighborhoods are teeming with houses of worship for my fellow Christians, and that is a blessing of biblical proportions. 9) Fervor for sports teams: We do not see many championships around here and receive ribbing for our droughts, but naysayers can never knock our dedication, misplaced or not, to our athletes. I have followed our teams for 26 of my 36 years and though I occasionally succumb to negativity regarding their championship caliber, nothing but death will silence me. 8) Diversity: Yes, like attracts like, but why fall prey to narrowing our appreciation of the growing diversity that has become a boon to our identity? Some people just might learn a thing or two.

4) An abundance of children: I have always loved knowing that thousands of vibrant youngsters call South Philly home, and since my four-year-old son can do so, too, I am especiallyg enthused about having a second childhood through his eyes and theirs. 3) Food: I bet many of you are wondering “How could this fool not have put food at number one? We are not lacking for locations to sate us, for sure, but for this bub, grub is not the victor. 2) Nostalgia: That boyhood enthusiasm for South Philly that I mentioned earlier has intensified through my understanding of the expanse’s rich past. Hearing tales and inspecting time-tested places have brought out the historian in me, and I am incredibly grateful to have so many helpers in my quest to geek out on greatness. 1) Potential: When I ponder the nine other selections, the whole theme of potential strikes me as a unifier among them. South Philadelphians have certainly taken lumps over the years, but we are strong, my friends; we are capable of brilliance and resilience. Be proud of yourselves. h, South Philly, our little slice of heaven! When I visited the turf as a Southwest Philly-bred boy, I came to think of it as a whole other world and yearned to know what makes it thrive. Attending St. John Neumann High School, I gained greater exposure to a few neighborhoods, but my true education did not begin until I moved here in 2004. For the last 11 years, I have grown in admiration for residents and traditions and have let their inuence inspire my summation of the 10 best reasons that South Philly is great.

5) A plethora of talented people: I have covered the Lifestyles section of our publication since February 2013, and while that duty has united me with tremendous educators, singers, writers, and thespians, I know there are thousands of gifted residents using their talents to make our lives more positive.

In a couple years, there may be a five-story mixed use building with 70 residential units, 18,000 square feet of retail space on the ground floor, two underground levels of parking for tenants and for the public, and eight trinity town homes on Darien Street. MIDWOOD WILL BE at the Passyunk Square Civic Association (PSCA) to present a plan and renderings as well as field feedback from concerned and excited neighbors alike. The meeting is 7 p.m. Nov. 10 at St. Maron’s Church, 1013 Ellsworth St. Legislation has been introduced by 1st District Councilman Mark Squilla’s office to rezone the parcel from CMX-2 to CMX-3. “We’re working with the community and we like it, Anne Kelly King, Squilla’s chief of staff, said. “It’s still early and there’s still a lot to be done. I expect there to be some give-and-takeback moving forward. Gambino said she believes Midwood may be good on its apparent intent to move Anastasi both temporarily during

BVS EVSSZ eOa VS`S The rumor mills churned and overflowed with whispers of “Wheel of Fortune coming to East Passyunk Avenue this week, and they turned out to be mostly misguided. Pat Sajak and Vanna White, the longstanding host and hostess of the NBC game show that premiered in January of 1975, were indeed in the City of Brotherly Love for a brief visit this past week, but no showtaping or contestant-casting went down. It turns out they were just filming segments for a series of shows they call “Great American Cities. No official word was passed on by NBC or P h o t o b y C a r o l K a e l s o n their publicity teams, but Krista Ostensen, a

construction and into the new space once it’s finished. “It is my understanding that Midwood wants to do everything they can to keep Anastasi in that location, she noted. She added the Association would really reject only a retail tenant that resembled a big, corporate entity and that restaurants make for excellent commercial corridor staples. And the added extra parking could be a boon for Market businesses. Gambino said “we’re totally excited about the project, absolutely. I think it’s the best part of South Philly, honestly, but I’m a little biased. Midwood wished to disclose nothing ahead of the PSCA meeting and failed to hand over a description of itself as a company before deadline. The City of Philadelphia Planning Commission has approved Midwood’s initial renderings but made it clear that lots of details still haven’t emerged and won’t for months. Gary Jastrzab, the Planning Commission’s executive director, believes it’s smart development, too. “We here regarded it as a great kind of development for that corner, he said, representative from Sony, did admit that “I do see that information did leak out, so I can tell you that we are celebrating Philadelphia as one of our Great American Cities, so Pat and Vanna were in town shooting footage to be used during those shows. She said the footage won’t show until May. Of course, the co-hosts since about 1982 visited the Liberty Bell and took in a view from above Logan Square, but they also visited Headhouse Square and East Passyunk Avenue. “It was cool. They had a couple days of shooting around the city, Mike Harris, president of the South Street Headhouse District, said. “They were down on East Passyunk, they went to Ralph’s [760 S. Ninth St.], and I know

and especially applauded the addition of some public parking (in addition to more spots than necessary for the 70 tenants). “It’s pretty amazing and something we very much support – as I understand it, one level would be for serving the residential units and the other level would be for public parking supporting the Ninth Street Market area. Even the eight row homes aspect seems to consider how this development would “meet the street: “I think what it does is it respects Darien Street and it doesn’t turn its back on Darien Street in terms of the scale of that very narrow street – it’s respectful to the street, Jastrzab said. SQUILLA’S LEGISLATION TO change zoning, the executive director said, would alter CMX-2 (“very neighborhood commercial, mom-and-pop stores) to CMX-3 (“kind of like Old City density). He said “we think it’s appropriate for the site. SPR Contact Staff Writer Bill Chenevert at bchenevert@southphillyreview.com or ext. 117. Comment at southphillyreview.com/news/features.

The Episcopalian Diocese, as spoken for by its communications director Henry Barnes, says there’s been much conjecture being stated as fact and that all the talk of the church’s closing should be taken with a “grain of salt. From the Diocese: “The Episcopal Diocese of Pennsylvania has made no decisions in relation to closure of the Church of the Crucifixion as a congregation of the Diocese of Pennsylvania. The congregation was instructed to cease worshiping in the space until the building had been deemed structurally and physically safe for occupancy. Once the building is certified as safe for occupancy, the conversation about the future of the congregation will continue with its vestry. The congregation is currently worshiping at the nearby St. Mary’s Church, Bainbridge Street. That house of worship, 1831 Bainbridge St., is almost exactly one mile west – a 20-minute walk. “They have been whittling away at the resolve of the parish for the last six months or so, Campbell, who has been getting mixed messages from communication with the Diocese and the local, in-building leadership, said. “It’s a very big mess. Right now we’re in damage control. We paid $22,000 to a rigging company to hang [lighting] pipes to code, and they’re fully bonded and insured. to Luna’s situation is the erosion of history at the cost of intensifying real estate trends. “I think the larger story outside of the particulars of Luna’s situation is the pressure that the African American population feels due to changing demographics and rising, aggressive real estate developments often targeting churches, Forrest said. “A lot of historic churches are under pressure. One such South Philly church is the First African Baptist Church, 1608 Christian St. That pastor has struggled to achieve a deal that would knock his building down and let a developer build overpriced town homes. “In the next half block away [from Luna], they just put in $1.2 million town houses within steps and there are two that were sold recently, Campbell revealed. He and Forrest hinted at a phrase that seems, sadly, all too real: “Follow the money. Campbell added Luna’s work “moves people, affects people and changes the way people see the world. We produce things that are going to affect people on a deeply personal, psychological and socioeconomic level. Now they’re not sure what the future holds and the artistic director has had to cancel the rest of his 2015-’16 season. “The whole model is now in question, unfortunately, he said. Theatre Philadelphia’s administrative director has hope. “It’s sad to see a theater going through these woes. Our thoughts are with the people that we represent and work with, Joel Sumner said. “We hope Luna can find a solution and can get back to creating the work that they do. Though crestfallen, Campbell doesn’t even really fault the Diocese for its closures. “... the Diocese has a lot of churches where people aren’t attending, and they have very, very valuable properties, he admitted. “If they need to redistribute the parishioners to different churches and consolidate, they have the right to do so. SPR Contact Staff Writer Bill Chenevert at bchenevert@southphillyreview.com or ext. 117. hen fellow South Philadelphia dweller Dan Hodge approached J Hernandez in the winter to profess that his peer would be a perfect fit for a staging of “Dracula, the latter performer presumed the pitch would be for him to play lunatic R.M. Renfield. When learning that his colleague desired for him to play the title role, he wondered “Are you sure? yet set himself to the task of sinking his teeth into the meaty endeavor, which he is executing through Nov. 22.

“He’s such an iconic character, and I just had a moment where I wondered if I could be a match for the material at this point, the West Passyunk denizen said. “However, there is such great fun to be had addressing the mystique of the vampire, and I’m loving the experience. With East Passyunk Crossing’s Hodge directing, Hernandez is portraying the fanged figure at the Rose Valleyheadquartered Hedgerow Theatre. The locals and their contemporaries, including Newbold’s John Lopes as Dr. Seward, are pledging their undying allegiance to the undead using the 1924 adaptation of Bram Stoker’s beloved novel, with the chief actor charging himself to give equal

attention to Dracula’s isolation and motivation. “He’s the ultimate outsider and there’s great sadness and loneliness within him, the portrayer said of the fomenter of fear. “After so many centuries of knowing about the story, I don’t think we can necessarily sympathize with him, but I think we can realize he’s not all evil; therefore, I’m just looking to make him dignified. Describing the rendition as “an old horror story meets Agatha Christie, he confessed he loves that the opportunity has rejuvenated his knowledge of and passion for the classic horror genre, noting the content also calls to mind elements of Shakespearean and Restoration com-

No matter its semblance to other works or the familiarity audiences have with the protagonist, Hernandez believes the whole production “sinks the eight ball through its analysis of humanity, sanity and sexuality and holds that viewers, no matter that Halloween has passed, can always find intrigue in contemplating one’s sorrows and measures to reclaim some sense of stability. “He’s timeless, for sure, the thespian said of the constant count. “There’s great depth to him, and I really thank Dan for letting me contemplate how to give crowds that intense look at his psyche. Really great theater wants to do just that, so I’m pretty fortunate to make such leaps through this play. AS A TEXAS-BRED youth, Hernandez felt he would one day measure the march of time through music, with drumming as his infatuation. The “band guy believed he would follow in his family’s melodylaced footsteps, but his early teenage years yielded a shift in his reasoning. “Yep, it was a girl who sparked my interest, he revealed of thinking of theater as a means to experience novelty. “The young

punk that I was, I wasn’t really looking to add much to the whole institution of performing on stage, but I did start to see it as thrilling. As he matured, Hernandez came to consider theater as valuable as air. Initially eager to have any task in helping a production to triumph, he often worked backstage and eventually found himself coveting a different theatrical identity. “I discovered how the machine worked, he said of studies at Texas State University that followed enrollment at the College of Santa Fe. “I learned how to relate to people and realized there’s so much to

take into account when putting on a show; it was all wonderful. Having also taught in Texas, the budding enthusiast built on his affinity for wisdom by acquiring his master’s from the University of Virginia. A perennial penchant for the classics received a jolt through a relationship with the Royal Shakespeare Co., with the Bard’s canon also helping to initiate his Philadelphia existence. “Like I said with Hodge, I wondered ‘Are you sure about this?’ when he said I should audition, Hernandez recalled of Tony Award nominee Forrest McClendon’s suggestion that he should seek a role in the Philadelphia Shakespeare Theatre’s 2013 production of “Othello. “I was fortunate to score the role of Iago, and after some time and a few goofy moments in life, I started to wonder what being an actor in Philly would be like. His portrayal of the villain brought him a Phindie Critics Choice Award and assisted in his establishing much-appreciated connections within the city’s performance realm, particularly friendships with South Philly dwellers past and present such as Hodge and Damon Bonetti, with whom he has worked for The Philadelphia Art-

he need for a liver enzyme test derailed my chemo treatment for the current twoweek period. Uncle Nunzi called it my bye weeks. For you non-football fans, a “bye in the National Football League simply means a team does not have a game that week. Every squad enjoys a bye week during the season. Ironic that this past week that my bye weeks coincided with the Eagles’ break (some may say the way the Eagles have played, their offense has enjoyed a bye week since the season started). One has to roll with the punches when going through chemo treatments. You cannot afford to get down every time something does not go according to Hoyle (who the hell was Hoyle anyway?). Besides, my nurse practitioner tells me that I look good. I am not being immodest when I write that most of my family and friends end any conversation with me by telling me that I look good. I admit that in the scheme of things, expectations are low in that regard for cancer patients. It’s not fair, but it’s true. The comments on my appearance say more about how people expect cancer patients to look than my own general health. It’s kind of like saying that none of the Republican candidates for president are as crazy as Dr. Ben Carson. My oncologist tells me I’m doing “fabulous, which sounds more like Billy Crystal doing Fernando Lamas than an oncologist on the status of my health. I expect that as soon as I am given a clean bill of health (hopefully sometime in January), no one will notice again whether I look good. I am reminded of the late Jack Edelstein, who was, among other things, a local bon vivant, comedian who specialized in double-talk, and stats keeper during Eagles broadcasts. He instructed his sister that when he died, he wanted the following epitaph on his headstone: I TOLD YOU I WAS SICK. In that vein, I’ve told my wife Fran to put on my headstone: HE LOOKED GOOD. Mayor Michael Nutter is not looking good these days after a Philly.com report showed the City (meaning the taxpayers) are picking up a tab of over $1 million to support the Philadelphia International Cycling Classic to be held June 7 in Manayunk. You’ll remember that this is the same mayor who has stressed that big local events such as the Mummer’s Day Parade be cost neutral. Many of the participants in the cycling event are from outside the United

N a ] c b V ^ V W Z Z g ` Sd W Se Q ] [ States. So why are we footing the bill for an event that was financed much less expensively by private interests? The Mayor believes it is important to keep the event afloat until it’s selfsupporting again because he just loves cycling of all sorts and all things global. Tell that to the mummers, Mayor Mike. Another week, another soap opera involving Kathleen Kane. Things are not good either for the State Attorney General Kane. Her license to practice law taken away, Kane is promising to (are you ready for this?), release more porn that was circulated among some of the top dogs in Harrisburg (horn dogs, that is). Maybe they should move the offices of those state officials into the men’s locker room, a more appropriate location. All hail the “good State of Pennsylvania, the state that has an antiquated state liquor store system, while 48 other states seem to be able to live with privatization. The state that seems to think taxing the extraction of natural gas like other states would cause the collapse of the industry. The state that took over running Philadelphia schools and is arguably doing a worse job than the City. Pennsylvania--whose motto ought to be--Where Good Ideas Go to Die. The state bird ought to be a lemming. Because of deadlines, this column is being written before Tuesday’s election for Mayor. I am going to make a good guess that Jim Kenney won (I wish I could predict Eagles games with that same sense of certainty). I think Melissa Murray Bailey ran a serious campaign and deserves credit for such, but, unfortunately, the Republican Party in Philadelphia is not a serious entity. Mr. Kenney is taking the highest office in this City at a time when despite the obvious problems he’ll face, the future seems bright. We wish him the good luck (are you counting with me the number of times I’ve smartly worked “good into the column?) he will need to succeed. I used to think maybe I was too cynical about the publicity seeking Kardashians. Since Khloe decided to stay with the troubled Lamar Odom (at least until he recovers, meaning when his publicity value wears off), I think I’ve been too kind. While in basic training in the Air Force Reserve, I fired a .22 caliber rifle and missed my target entirely on all 10 shots. I believe I was just unlucky - kind of like Rand Paul and his candidacy - and that someday my expertise with a rifle may be appreciated. I think all candidates on the debate stage should be armed with a weapon. Target shooting during debates will enforce the seriousness with which we hold the 2nd amendment. If Hillary Clinton wins the target shoot, the Republicans can investigate whether she cheated. Remember, dear wife, he looked good. SPR Comment at southphillyreview.com/opinion/cardella.

hen you are preparing for an at-home gathering, the universal agreement for the items that guests can snack on are a bowl of chips and dip. Diane Pecca has done just that, but she prepares her mixture with a fall twist. The resident of the 2300 block of South 16th Street crafts this concoction during the autumn when pumpkins are in season. The Girard Estate inhabitant tends to double this recipe when guests are over since the first batch disappears so quickly. This crunchy guacamole dip is a perfect dish to serve when you and your visitors are rooting for the Eagles and can be prepared and served almost immediately. SPR

The tryouts took place in Los Angeles, New York, and Philadelphia. “Soon after he got home, they called and asked him for a second audition in Roxborough [Pennsylvania], his father, John Murawski said. “He

had to submit some videos and in early March, the producers told us they were going to send us information for him to come for a final tryout in [Los Angeles]. Now, Nate Murawski is one of those two dozen competitors from around the nation who will test their talents on the cooking competition, which premieres tomorrow at 8 p.m. The Pennsport resident is also one of four Philadelphians who will appear on the show this season. Nate Murawski started cooking at 4 years old, and was influenced by his mother, who makes Polish dishes for the family at home, and his grandmother and uncle, who work at The Wharf Restaurant in Wildwood, N.J. “My nana’s a great Italian cook, Nate Murawski, of the 100 block of McKean Street, said. “She makes some awesome pasta and took me

Right now, he owns a catering business, Awesome Sauce, which serves Asian, Polish, or any style of food customers order through phone calls and Facebook. “I would definitely love to be one of the good cooks in Philadelphia, Nate Murawski said. “I love to cook. SPR Comment at southphillyreview.com/news/ features.

She took me under, too, and let me bake with her and fry some pierogies, and that’s how I became a Polish chef. The sixth grader from Meredith Elementary School, 725 S. Fifth St., is a fan of the local food scene of Philadelphia, which includes Stogie Joe’s Tavern, 1801 E. Passyunk Ave. But his favorite restaurant is Moonshine, 1825 E Moyamensing Ave. “We usually don’t go [to Moonshine], but when we do it’s a special treat, Nate Murawski said. “I love it. The junior Polish cook’s signature dish is the potato and onion pierogies, but his style of foods varies to different cultures as well. “I’m also a great Asian cook, the boy, whose

ith nearly four decades of experience within culinary settings, Dan Brodeur certainly has made enough meals to contend “There is nothing better than pleasing people with food. For the last two-and-a-half years, he has catered to his cravings for satisfying dinners as the executive chef at The IATSE Ballroom by Anthony’s Caterers, 2401 S. Swanson St. “I don’t think you’re going to find a nicer venue, the 51-year-old said from the Whitman establishment. “We’re responsible for hosting a huge number of functions, so I definitely want to help it to grow and evolve into a destination for those interested in fine dining. Owner and fellow chef Anthony Foster, whom Brodeur lauded for his management of the four-year-old location and three other sites, enlists the Delaware County resident to prepare plates for diverse crowds, including personnel from the South Division Police Advisory Council, which held its Officer of the Year banquet there on Oct. 22. Thankful for the trust and input that he receives from the overseer and general manager Giovanni LaRosa, Brodeur believes his tenure at the spot has not only enhanced his output but also has aided his interpersonal skills owing to the solid team that surrounds him. “I’ve loved furthering my career here, the 2008 Pennsylvania Restaurateur of the Year award winner said. “Anthony’s known for producing great food and lots of it, so I feel fortunate to be in the mix. The self-taught figure, who prior to his time at Anthony’s helmed the Media-based Brodeur’s on State Street, noted business has been booming lately, and that has yielded valued opportunities to have aromas, flavors, and stomachs become a blessed trinity. With fall upon us, he decided to share his Harvest Pork recipe. “It’s a really tender and delicious dish, he said of the seasonal item. “There is such a strong combination of ingredients that everything just comes together and results in a really good presentation. I’m happy to serve it here.

27@31B7=<A( Melt the butter, and brush onto the pork. Roll the pork in a mixture of the cinnamon and sugar. Spray a nonstick sautĂŠ pan with Pam or another coating, and heat on medium high. SautĂŠ the pork for two to three minutes on each side. Remove from the heat, and place on a non-stick baking pan to rest for about 10 minutes. For the chutney, melt the butter in a saucepan on medium-high heat. Add the apple bits, stir, and cook for six to eight minutes until tender. Cook for two to three more minutes after adding the cranberries. Add the honey, brown sugar, cinnamon, cloves, salt, and pepper, reduce the heat, and cook for three to four minutes. Add the cider and cranberry juice, and simmer until reduced to desired consistency. Add the walnuts if using and the final bat of butter, simmering and stirring until the latter melts. Remove from the heat. Place the pork into a 350-degree oven, and set the timer for 20 to 25 minutes, with the inside temperature needing to read 145 degrees on a meat thermometer. Allow to rest for two to three minutes before cutting. For the sauce, melt the butter in a pre-heated sautĂŠ pan on medium-high heat. Add the liqueur, being careful of the flame. Add the heavy cream, salt, and pepper, and stir. Lower the heat to medium, and simmer two to three minutes to reduce. Finish with a pat of butter. Stir, and remove from the heat once the butter has melted. Spoon the chutney onto the plate, slice the pork, lay several slices in a fan shape, and drizzle them with the sauce. SPR

My brother said that regardless of how much playing time I would have received, I would have met great people. I’m doing that now, so that sort of makes up for that missed chance, and I’m trying to maximize my time with my friends and coaches. As a biology major, the senior has affirmed his allegiance to the books and has begun to contemplate his post-college journey, noting he is applying to locations to serve as a physician’s assistant. “I’ve always had an interest in science, Lamb said. “There were early moments where it seemed overwhelming, but I’ve learned to study better and get a better grip on my responsibilities in total.
