A L L E G H ENY HEALTH NETWOR K Cardiac rehabilitation provides: • Personal cardiac rehabilitation plan tailored to your diagnosis, treatment, and risk factors.
His recovery from heart surgery is on track John Ward is the independent type, living on his own and self-sufficient at age 74. A self-proclaimed homebody, it doesn’t take much to make him happy. He likes to work on projects around the house, enjoys the comfort of his couch, and visits with neighbors and his step-daughter. But, when he started to have pain in his left shoulder that wouldn’t go away — and got worse — and he was tired all the time, he knew he couldn’t fix it on his own. It was time to talk to his doctor.
• Wellness education that includes nutrition, stress management, and smoking cessation.
Monitored exercise routines Cardiac rehabilitation is for people with cardiovascular disease, recovering from heart surgery, or those who have symptomatic peripheral artery disease (PAD). It can keep heart, valve, or peripheral vascular diseases under control for better health with improvement in quality of life and well-being.
“I told him I just didn’t feel right,” John said.
“The people at Canonsburg were fantastic,” John said. “In the beginning, I didn’t believe I’d ever be able to walk a mile on the treadmill. They encouraged me every step of the way and went out of their way to keep tabs on me.”
John’s doctor referred him to Dr. Travis Wilson, the director of cardiology at Canonsburg Hospital. After an initial evaluation, Dr. Wilson told John his pain was caused by blocked arteries. But this was part of a larger problem, blocking the circulation to his heart.
At Canonsburg, specially trained exercise physiologists worked with John to improve his strength and endurance. When he started therapy, he was out of breath after walking only a minute. Now, he walks for 25 minutes on the treadmill — and feels great.
Dr. Wilson sent John to a cardiac surgeon for further expert evaluation.
When his rehab ended, John continued his walking program at South Hills Village.
Minimally invasive technique leaves a little scar
Canonsburg Hospital’s rehabilitation center has state-of-theart equipment and monitoring systems, including treadmills, stationary and recumbent bikes, NuSteps, elliptical trainers, stair climbers, rowers, arm ergometers, free weights, therabands, and strength training machines.
Doctors determined John needed heart surgery. At Allegheny General Hospital, surgeons did a non-invasive procedure that involved inserting a catheter through John’s wrist. They placed a stent into his artery. The procedure is called radial artery catherization. In the fall of 2018, John had a second surgery to remove plaque that had accumulated in his arteries. Both procedures helped to keep the artery open, prevent future blockages, and keep blood flowing into his heart and through his body. The goal was to get John to better health, with less pain, more energy, and reduce his chances of a heart attack. The next step toward that goal was for John to regain his strength and stamina. So he began cardiac rehabilitation at Canonsburg Hospital.

SPOTLIGHT ON SAFETY SCENE: It’s first light on a cold February morning. A forklift operator at a busy manufacturing plant is driving out of a rack with an expensive pallet of merchandise. It’s a maneuver he’s performed hundreds of times, only this time, as he’s backing up, he reaches behind and grabs the outside post of the overhead guard of the forklift with his left hand. Because of the early morning, repetition of movement, and not paying attention to the surroundings, he pins his hand between the shelving behind him and the post he was holding. The damage to the racking and merchandise was small...this time. But the forklift operator will never use his left hand again. Unfortunately, this wasn’t a scene out of an 80’s horror film. This was a real incident from a 2018 OSHA accident report. And it’s only one of the many avoidable and costly accidents companies and employees experienced last year alone.
Quite often, it’s during a sustained accident free period when everyone involved lowers their guard and safety is neglected. Fortunatel there are many ways that your company and employees Fortunately, can prevent tragic and expensive accidents from occurring when it comes to material handling. Jack is Back!
Millcraft Brings Corporate Headquarters Back to Southpointe Twenty-five years after it all began, Jack Piatt, Founder of Southpointe and Chairman of Millcraft, is coming home! Millcraft’s offices were located in Southpointe for 14 years before moving their headquarters to Crossroads Center, a building owned by the developer in downtown Washington. With offices in downtown Pittsburgh, Sewickley, Wexford, Glenshaw, Shadyside, and Upper St. Clair, the Piatt’s were looking for a centrally located headquarters, and Southpointe seemed the logical choice for easy access from all surrounding areas. “Southpointe is a beautiful development,” said Jack Piatt, Owner of Millcraft Investments. “We’re happy to be moving back to a place that holds special memories of old friends and new friends.” Beginning in the late 1980’s when Jack Piatt and Delvin Miller, the horse racing legend, were driving along Interstate 79 when they passed a tract of land (formerly Western Center) that is now Southpointe I. His son, Rod Piatt, President of Horizon Properties, is the lead developer of Southpointe II. What they first conceived as a golf course, 26

became the 589-acre Southpointe mixed-use development where people can live, work, and play. Faced with much opposition and a suffering economy in Washington County, the Piatt’s gained support from County Commissioner Frank Mascara, who endorsed the project. After many challenges and years of hard work, Southpointe emerged as one of the most successful mixed-use developments in the nation. Lucas Piatt, President and Chief Operating Officer of Millcraft, reflects on his first memories of Southpointe as a wooded hillside where he hunted deer. Little did he realize that his family would help to create a project that would enrich the community and serve as the future national headquarters for Millcraft. “Within the past ten years, Millcraft has grown to over 94 entities, 1,000 employees (over 60 corporate), and it became necessary to find a location that would accommodate our expansion and allow for continued growth,” said Lucas Piatt. “Southpointe is the best option for the company and our employees. I’m excited to go back to the place where it all began!”

THE LARGEST MARCELLUS & UTICA SHALE CONFERENCE IN THE WORLD Register today at:
TOPICS COVERED:
DUGEast.com
Marcellus and Utica Activity Regional Infrastructure Emerging Regulatory Issues
Natural gas exports will grow significantly in 2019. The massive production flowing from Appalachian reservoirs drives this growth. DUG East speakers will discuss production outlooks and CAPEX plans for the Marcellus and Utica region. NGL production is projected to see strong growth and southwestern Pennsylvania’s wet-gas reservoirs will feed much of that growth. The Shell cracker project is a key step toward a regional petrochemical industry that could spur economic prosperity in Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Ohio. Major pipeline projects are alleviating bottlenecks in the Appalachian Basin. The region is steadily improving its connectivity and operators are benefiting from multiple options to reach more markets.
