Leamington makes decision to terminate OPP contract

LEAMINGTON — Notice will be given to the Ontario Provincial Police that the Municipality of Leamington intends to terminate their contract in a year’s time.

Council voted Tuesday night to terminate the contract.

The OPP took over from the Leamington Police Service in December 2010.

The decision comes after many months of discussion by council and the OPP.

In December of last year, council signed a three-year contract renewal with the OPP, but made it clear they were unhappy with the level of service.

That contract renewal included a clause that Leamington could terminate the contract with one-year written notice.

The situation is ongoing, and more information will be available in next week’s Southpoint Sun.
