LEAMINGTON – The Highbury Canco property on Sherk Street became much more than just another parking lot on Saturday, December 15. It became a ‘judgment free’ zone — one reserved for merriment and community spirit. There were Christmas carols wafting through the air, lots of holiday greetings and heartfelt thanks that made the chilly winter day just a little warmer. While many were busy doing their last minute shopping, more than 45 volunteers were Talking Over Turkey to make sure 609 area families will be well fed for Christmas. For Mike and Deanna Diab of Ruthven, what started as an exercise in ‘paying it forward’ two years ago has snowballed from 50 turkeys to more than 600 turkeys plus the fixings. The couple couldn’t wipe the silly grins off their faces. While they had worked hard to secure donations, storage, transportation and packaging of the family feasts, the results made it oh so worth the effort. In the giveaway they dubbed Talking Over Turkey, slated to kickoff Saturday at 11 a.m., the

lineup began about two hours earlier. There were no stipulations to the giveaway — just having a need. And Mike said the term ‘need’ is very subjective, and they just hoped it will help local residents enjoy a family dinner on Christmas Day. For the Diabs, it was all about family and fellowship. While much of the behind the scenes work began long ago, the Diabs arrived onsite with the food about 7:30 Saturday morning. By 9 a.m., Deanna said a line began to form. They began the giveaway a little earlier than expected in an orderly, cordial fashion. The Diabs said they were overwhelmed by the generosity of the community, whether it was by donating turkeys or other food items, making financial contributions, providing freezer space to store the turkeys, assisting with the transport of goods, packing the boxes or volunteering at the giveaway itself, it was just one more example of the community stepping up for those a little less fortunate. Southpoint Capitals jerseys stood out in the crowd. Young men, many donning Santa hats,

were busily carrying crate after crate to the cars of the recipients. About 15 members of the Bantam Major team took time out of their day to lend a helping hand. Coach Kevin Gale beamed with pride as the young men shared the team-bonding exercise of volunteering in their community. Gale said one of the hockey moms suggested they assist with the event and Gale said everyone was immediately on board with the idea. With a game scheduled for later in the day, Gale said events such as this offer the young athletes a perfect opportunity for a team-bonding experience. The line moved swiftly as volunteers hoisted box after box of the holiday meals. Before 1 p.m., all 609 turkey dinners had been picked up. The Diabs were a little disappointed that a few people showed up after the last dinner had been spoken for, walking away emptyhanded. While the Diabs felt bad about that, they were ecstatic about the success of the event and the number of volunteers and donors who came together to offer a chance for more than 600 families to share in a special meal on Christmas Day.

LEAMINGTON – Unlike other local municipalities, Leamington Council has “opted in” to be approved for a cannabis store. But that decision by town Council on Monday

night, Dec. 17, was overtaken by another recent announcement from the provincial government that said it would not allow any licenced stores in municipalities of populations under 50,000 at this point. Council’s decision came following a lengthy discus-

sion that featured numerous speakers, both for and against the move. The province had told municipalities they must make a decision by Jan. 22 if they wanted to opt in to allow stores. Municipalities that opted out could opt-in later, although the province

has said it will only allow 25 stores to open at first. Several councillors indicated that in view of the province’s population rule, Leamington should simply delay any decision. “It will give us some breathing room,” suggested Councillor John Jacobs.

But Councillor Tim Wilkinson said he still wanted to hear from the delegates at the meeting. Pastor Dan Tamburo told councillors he was aware of the economic benefits, but asked if the town (Continued on page A5)

Would like to thank everyone for your generous donations for 2018 SPECIAL THANKS TO... Businesses, churches, service clubs, schools, Freshco, Zehrs and individuals who initiated can drives and collected a staggering amount of food and money to help with an on-going need. Your overwhelming generosity is greatly appreciated and clearly demonstrates the giving and caring spirit of our community.

You have helped US help OTHERS and we are very grateful for your support!

KINGSVILLE – It was the traditional Kingsville District High School’s boys versus girls battle to collect the most cans and non-perishables to help the Kingsville Goodfellows fill over 100 Christmas hampers for those less fortunate. But for the first time, this year the students were forced to have the donors come to them with the donations. The KDHS Can Drive was Tuesday, Dec. 11, and any

doubt as to whether the residents would come through was wiped out Wednesday morning when the results were revealed. Despite the obstacles, the students managed to collect nearly 11,000 cans – the second most collected in the past four years. And while the winner was really the community, the girls earned bragging rights and the trophy for collecting nearly 6,000 cans.

awarded Brian Good and Wendell Ferguson will be joined by celebrated singer/ songwriter Sarah Smith and top painter Paul Murray. Behind the performers, a 16foot backdrop will come to life as Paul Murray, known

as the speed painter with his “Brush of Light”, works his magic on huge canvases that are completed in minutes. All of his magic happens while the audience is being entertained by the musicians. Christmas-themed

paintings are done while the canvases are spinning. The Christmas Concert & Benefit is a great new way to enjoy a holiday evening out with family, friends and colleagues. The show is an intimate time where the artists tell stories and sing their new releases, all the while paintings come to life in varied and magical ways. “We are fostering youth in the arts with the hope of helping others follow their dreams,” said Paul Murray, the event organizer. “We are so lucky to live our dreams daily. We want to help others and hope this powerful, and yet intimate, way helps future artists reach their potential. We included a ‘Pass it Forward Project’ with our Music ’n’ Arts Collide Ontario, and it has been received with great enthusiasm. We love including youth in our performances. The audiences say the show is inspirational, funny and filled with Christmas magic,” said Murray. Seventeen veterans presented with Quilt of Valour By Pat Bailey

Bill Robertson of Leamington struggled with being recognized in a special ceremony at the Kingsville Royal Canadian Legion on Wednesday, December 12. As a member of the military who signed up at age 17 and served during a rather peaceful time in the world, the president of Wheatley Legion admitted to being a little apprehensive about receiving a Quilt of Valour. “I find it difficult to consider myself a veteran,” said Robertson, “when there were no conflicts.” But like all members of the military, Robertson admitted he signed on knowing things could have changed at any mo-

ment. He was deeply honoured and grateful for the beautiful, handmade quilt that was placed ‘like a hug’ around his shoulders. The quilts, each bearing the Maple Leaf, the signature symbol for the group of quilters from Windsor and Essex County, were presented to 17 veterans who had sacrificed to serve their country. There were veterans of all ages, each deserving of a quilt for their service. Accompanying each quilt was the message “Handmade with love, respect and gratitude for your sacrifice to Canada. May the hugs stitched into this quilt give you comfort, strength and love.” According to ‘Quilts’ representative

Pauline Gaudette, the foundation became official in 2009 as an expression of gratitude to thank and help comfort returning veterans. Gaudette said it doesn’t matter if the veterans experienced deployment to war zones or served during peaceful times, they all pledged to serve their country. The Quilts of Valour were presented to Chris Carter, Andy Cole, Jean-Pierre Dubois, Cliff Edwards, Alexander ‘Bud’ Fortin, John Garton, Ron Griffis, Laurie Hylton, Bob Kelly, Kevin Killop, Doug McGillivray, William Roach, Bill Robertson, Billy Rodrigues, Robert Sovie, Bill Wilson and Troy Windibank.

Oh the weather outside is…. Ahh, the fresh crisp feel of new fallen snow underfoot. The bright lights of the season, all lit up in greens and golds and reds. Wait, what? There is no snow? The lights are bright pink and purple? Well, such is life in the Sun Parlour of Canada. While not totally disappointed in the lack of snow this late into December, I guess I could give in a bit so the little ones could get their White Christmas. Then a nice warm spell would be welcome in my world. Nothing too drastic, you know, just warm enough to avoid scraping the windshield. My bones and joints, which I used to trust immensely, are now telling me when it’s too cold outside. Used to be that I could jump a fence or climb a tree without fear of breaking anything. I’d think nothing of stepping over that curb onto the sidewalk, or hopping down from the bed of that pickup. Now my senior mind tells my body not to take that leap,

even if it’s only a couple of feet down. And if I do perform some sort of strenuous exercise, like opening the fridge or digging the cookie sheet out of the lower cupboard, I don’t usually feel it until the next morning. I’m afraid my days of running and jumping are well behind me. Softball season is a few months away and once again, I find myself contemplating retirement. I had visions of taking the grandchildren tobogganing over the Christmas holidays. Two things needs to happen: We need some snow, for which I’ve already mentioned my distain, and I need some ambition, which I’m hoping to get for Christmas. Yes, just in time for holiday shopping, a nice giant can of ambition would fit me so much better than the socks and belts that Santa’s been handing out to me the past few years. If the snow and ambition can find their way to me at some point, I’d love to take the kids to some of my old haunts and let them feel the Lake Erie breeze as it burns their little faces on their descent. Then the climb all the way back to the top

of the hill helps them burn off the energy for their grandfather to sneak a post- Mark Ribble tobogganing nap. Grandma Deb would be waiting with hot chocolate and marshmallows to top it off nicely, as I sit and admire my other imaginary Christmas gift, the leg lamp from A Christmas Story. The stars may just align one last time for all of this to happen, so I’ll be ready with my orange hunting toque and my dollar store mittens, to brave those elements with the littles and bring them the joy they deserve. And if not, we can still all recline on the couch and I can tell them stories about the old days of being outside and playing in the snow, when good old grampa could still survive a wipeout on the ridge hill.

RIB’S RAMBLINGS

Try exploring the versatility of sparkling wine As we embark upon the Christmas season, I always get quesCarmen Danner tions about what to drink, not just with the traditional turkey feast, but with just about anything, and more and more we’re looking for something to make our get-togethers “pop”. Taking that “pop” literally, try exploring the versatility of Champagne/Prosecco/Sparkling Wine. Before you think I’ve totally flipped my lid (or popped my cork, if you prefer), hear me out… First, don’t think you have to rush out and buy some fancy-schmancy champagne flutes. Sparkling wine, no matter its actual name or origin, actually works well in a standard wine glass. This allows you

LET’S WINE TOGETHER

Editor

Sheila McBrayne

to savour the scent and aroma of the wine more than you would in a flute. However, it will not provide as much of a bubble-show. The next time you visit your local LCBO, especially if you happen to be near one of the larger stores, take a few minutes to check out their selection of sparkling wines from around the world. There are many to choose from. They vary in price as well as sweetness, so you can enjoy your bubbles with every part of your meal. Sparkling wine is a great all-around wine as it is high in acidity, which cuts through rich and creamy foods. It whets the appetite, cleanses the palate, and balances sweetness… so again, the perfect pair for everything from crispy ovenbaked chips and seasoned roasted nuts to chicken, steak, lasagna and cheesecake and sugar pie. Locally, we have several options for your sparkling wine exploration. Cooper’s Hawk, Sprucewood Shores, Pelee Island and Colio all offer sparkling wines. Colio and Pelee

each have three. Colio’s are made from Riesling, which provides a slightly sweeter flavour profile than you might be familiar with from a sparkling wine. Sprucewood’s sparkling is also made from Riesling and is another notch sweeter than Colio’s. Both Pelee and Colio also offer their version of the Italian Prosecco, which is usually lighter bodied than a traditional sparkler from champagne. Pelee’s “Secco” is made from grapes grown on their land and Colio’s is part of their International selections. I’m always encouraging you to switch things up and try something new, and Christmas dinner should be no exception. Even if you think sparkling wine should be reserved for special occasions, why shouldn’t every day qualify as a special occasion? All the best to you and yours. Cheers! Please help keep this column current and relevant. Let me know what you would like to hear about and submit your questions to me at csfdanner@gmail.com or on Twitter @ gr8grapz.

Leamington Council opts in for cannabis stores (Continued from front) would maintain a “wholesome” environment to attract newcomers. He urged Council to delay opting in until it was determined why other municipalities were opting out. He also said that Council should conduct a survey of its residents. As expected, health unit official Ed Nadalin urged Council not to opt in. Nadalin pointed to the health concerns over smoking. “It may be legal but it’s not safe,” he said. He also wants a “more thorough public engagement” in the discussion on the issue. Three business owners, Don Pacheco, Jim Simoni and Benji Mastronardi, told Council they intended to seek a licence with plans to build a cannabis retail store. Pacheco said their investment would be over $500,000, and while the population rule will take the town out of the first licence lottery, they will be ready for what follows. Pacheco called it a “huge opportunity” and opposition is based on “all the fear of the unknown.” Speaking for Aphria, the large local cannabis grower, Greg Battersby said the move would be of great economic benefit.

He said the “illegal market” in marijuana sales in the Leamington/Kingsville area is $200-million annually and is not going away by itself. “Illegal cannabis is not held to the same safety standards as we are”, and he explained that the company is moving into a variety of products particularly pointed at the health benefits. When it came to the vote, several councillors indicated that in their own “surveys” the view was 50-50. For Mayor Hilda MacDonald, the decision on marijuana was “not a moral” one, saying Council “is not responsible for what people do.” She noted the cannabis business here provides great jobs and “I hope they are here a long time.” And, she added, “the eyes of that business are on us.” She admitted the province is in control of much of what the municipalities can and can’t do, but by opting in the town would be in a better position for the future. As well as MacDonald, others voting to opt-in were Deputy-Mayor Larry Verbeke and councillors John Jacobs, Bill Dunn and Tim Wilkinson. Opposed were John Hammond and Paul Tiessen. While several towns in the Windsor area voted to optout, councillors were told at the meeting that both ChathamKent and Sarnia have decided to opt-in.

CHATHAM-KENT – Chatham-Kent Public Works is asking all residential property owners to add de-icing chemicals such as salt to treat slippery areas on municipal sidewalks abutting their properties. In 2018 the Province of Ontario amended the Minimum Maintenance Standards, adding an obligation to salt sidewalks to prevent and treat ice. The municipality does not currently salt sidewalks except in some downtown business areas. In order to meet the new obligation to salt sidewalks, the municipality has the option of either increasing taxes to pay for this new service or pass a bylaw requiring landowners to salt the sidewalks that run adjacent to their properties. Public Works will host a public information session early in 2019 to provide proposed service level options and receive comments from the public. The information gathered from the meeting will provide Council with options to deliver sidewalk winter control service for the 2019-2020 budget. Until Council makes a decision, the municipality will resume sidewalk snow plowing on all residential sidewalks and plowing and salting of all downtown business areas, as was done in past winter seasons. Property owners and tenants are being asked to voluntarily treat ice on sidewalks abutting their properties.

Yoga session leader Julianne Tiessen (right) and Ava Gossen demonstrate a position to a class in the Leamington District Secondary School gymnasium Wednesday, Dec. 5 as part of the school’s three-week Leadership Project. The Grade 12 Business-Leadership class, with assistance from the Grade 9 business class, is leading the program. The project includes fundraisers that will benefit local operations including The Bridge Leamington Youth Resource Centre and the Leamington Salvation Army.

Leadership class supports school, community By Bryan Jessop

LEAMINGTON – After being challenged to come up with a way to improve life both within and beyond the school walls, an LDSS class has replied with half a dozen answers. The Grade 12 Leadership Business class of Patricia Driedger at Leamington District Secondary School answered the call to support fellow students as well as community programs in Leamington, across Essex County and over international borders with six different projects. The threeweek campaign launched November 28 with the first installment of “Wellness Wednesdays,” an effort to spread awareness on mental health. The weekly lunchtime activities began with

intramural sports, continued with yoga and zumba sessions and wrapped up with a few rounds of the trivia game Kahoot.

“This has been a challenge to make them more socially responsible and they’re doing a great job.” — Patricia Driedger

The second project within the project was Teens For Teens, a homeroom clothing drive challenge where each student of the winning room received a $5 gift card courtesy of Carmen’s Catering. All donations of gently used clothing are being donated to client youths with

The Bridge Leamington Youth Resource Centre on Sherk Street from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 12. Also in support of the event, Fletcher’s Cleaners donated several hangers while Lakeside Bakery provided pastries. Another homeroom challenge is being dubbed Supplies For Salvation, where students are being asked to bring in a combined sum of 1,000 toiletries and hygiene products for the Leamington Salvation Army. Another, known as Kids Supporting Kids, sent a group of Leadership Business students into the main atrium to sell pizzas during Tuesday lunch hours. All proceeds are being donated to Windsor Regional Hospital’s pediatric unit. Through the project

Global Pack fire deemed accidental Following an investigation involving the Ontario Fire Marshall, the cause of a fire that broke out at Global Pack Packaging Solutions on Road 3 East in rural Kingsville has been declared electrical/accidental. The 26-hour blaze caused about $1.25 million in damage. The fate of the damaged building will be determined by the building owner’s insurance company. The fire’s impact was contained to the warehouse and its contents — a large collection of plastic and cardboard products. Equipment located further south in the building was spared. (Sun file photo)

Hearts For Hospice, the LDSS class set up donation boxes at Colasanti’s Tropical Gardens, Jose’s Bar and Grill and at Wheatley Area Arena during Wheatley Sharks home games. Sponsors cards are given in return for donations with all proceeds benefiting Erie Shores Hospice in Leamington. Lastly, the Humble Bumble project gathered contributions of gently used books to be sent to an orphanage in

Haiti. In support of the same program, $2 bracelets were sold during lunch hours. Later next year, a Grade 12 student at LDSS will visit the Haitian orphanage to deliver the books. “They came up with some really good ideas,” said Driedger, who explained that the six-part project was coordinated with the assistance of the LDSS Grade 9 business class. “Everyone’s been very excited about it. This has been a challenge to

make them more socially responsible and they’re doing a great job.” Smaller scale projects have taken place at LDSS prior to the holidays in previous years with cupcake sales and Operation Christmas Child. Driedger explained that those initiatives were more teacher led while the planning and execution of the six ongoing projects has been the responsibility of about 50 students.

McNamara new Essex County warden, Santos acclaimed as deputy-warden By Ron Giofu

ESSEX COUNTY – Essex County Council held its inaugural meeting for the 2018-22 term last week and selected a new warden to lead them. Tecumseh Mayor Gary McNamara was chosen as the warden, which is the head of County Council, for this term. Kingsville Mayor Nelson Santos also sought the position, but he didn’t leave without a new title either, as Santos was acclaimed deputy-warden. “I’m honoured,” said McNamara. “It’s always a privilege to be recognized by your peers around the table.” McNamara said he first joined Essex County Council about 20 years ago and served as deputy-warden from 2000-03 and 2010-14. It was his third time seeking the warden’s position. “I would say the third time is a charm,” he remarked. McNamara said he hopes to continue the work done by his predecessors, two of which remain on County Council. Santos was warden from 2006-10 and Lakeshore Mayor Tom Bain was warden from 2010-18. “The County is in a tremendous place. It’s because of the leadership we’ve had in the past,” he said. With questions hanging overhead about how the

Progressive Conservative government will deal with the province’s debt, McNamara said the County and lower-tier municipalities have to work collectively and deal with any potential impacts. “We are going to have to be vigilant that they don’t balance the books on the backs of municipalities,” he said. Working with all seven Essex County municipalities is important, McNamara indicated, but so too is working with the City of Windsor. He added that they have to continue to promote the fact that Essex County “is a great place to do business and raise a family.” Investing into infrastructure was cited as a priority, including dealing with busy roads in Tecumseh, LaSalle and Lakeshore as well as roads in the southern half of the county as well. Continuing to work on the County Wide Active Transportation System (CWATS) is important, he added, as is completion of a roads needs study. The mega-hospital that the County of Essex is committing about $100-million towards has to be completed, with the site for that being the corner of Concession 9 and County Road 42, near Windsor Airport. “It has to come to fruition,” added McNamara. tired from Hiram Walker, is also a former president of the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO). He hopes those contacts will help him in his new role as warden. “It’s given me an opportunity to connect with the upper levels of government,” he said. Santos said “it’s great to start a new term of Essex County Council” and that “I’m really excited to be a part of the team.” The Kingsville mayor stated continuing to reduce EMS wait times at hospitals is another priority, noting that while they have gotten better, there is still room for improvement. Santos also noted there is a strategic plan for Essex County being developed and that will “lay out a game plan” for the future. He added that will map out what the county can strengthen. Santos said that “it will be a good one-two punch” with McNamara as the warden and himself as deputy warden, noting they both have

a lot of experience and can help the new members. “I think it’s a positive for the region,” he said. County Council also decided its striking committee which will help determine which members sit on what committees. Bain, Santos, Leamington Mayor Hilda MacDonald and LaSalle Mayor Marc Bondy were elected to that committee. Essex County Council is comprised of the seven mayors and seven deputymayors from around the County.

Tom & Yvonne Bailey Married December 20, 1958

Can it truly be 60 years? Or has time been standing still? When 2 old souls have really lived, and made a life fulfilled. The story goes something like this... A cold and wintry day The church doors slammed open in winter bliss and a father proclaims “No Way!” The two thought they could sneak away and whisper wedding vows But family does what family does and supported them some how. Baby one arrived in March, a bundle of joy and pride. The future was so bright for him and ahead were some wild rides! Baby two was a gentle soul that was filled with so much light. Even when his sight was gone, he walked with dignity and might. The first girl born was full of spunk, she radiates it today. Her voice will carry through the house with always something to say. And then there was four... a girl for them, her curly hair a plenty! She kept the household running smooth, so organized and trendy. And so they lived the 6 of them as happy as could be Then Whoops! What’s this? Morning sickness? Another pregnancy? Baby number five was born in snow and sleet and fog... “What’s her name? Why’s she here? Why can’t we get a dog?” The years flew by and all worked hard at sharing in the load, Yvonne holding down the fort while Tom was on the road. They surrounded themselves with flowers, in life and at the shop Making connections with their friends and barely time to stop. Then life throws curves, it always does, and takes their breath away. Losing 2 sons, it broke their hearts, but God showed them the way. And then “bright light”, life was reborn in granddaughter number one, Lucia came and stole their hearts, brighter than the sun. And then came Finn, the blond bombshell, keeping them on their toes She kept them busy, with riding bikes and adventures that arose. The wall of love that circles us and protects our hearts and souls Was built with a firm foundation, starting 60 years ago. Mom and Dad, you have showed us that true love is filled with mirth. We love you now and always, from heaven and on earth.

KINGSVILLE – Councillor Tony Gaffan won a three-way election to be the alternate for Kingsville Council on Essex County Council. Mayor Nelson Santos and Deputy Mayor Gord Queen are the two council representatives, but in case of an absence, an alternate is usually established at the beginning of Council’s term of office. All councillors were asked if they were interested in the position at the Monday, December 10 regular meeting of Council. Councillors Kimberly DeYong and Laura Lucier declined, while Councillors Larry Patterson, Thomas Neufeld and Gaffan declared interest. “I have as much to give as to gain. I’d welcome the chance to represent Kingsville,” said Councillor Gaffan. Gaffan won the vote in the first round, taking four of the possible seven votes and exceeding 50 per cent approval.

LEAMINGTON – Three Grade 12 Leamington District Secondary School students, Ava Gossen, Macy Hodgson and Emily Dyck, created a socially responsible project for their Business Leadership class. They chose to create a school-wide clothing drive where they collected 1,438 pieces of clothing from the students at LDSS for teens in need this holiday season. They had the opportunity to display the clothing at The Bridge Youth Centre, so teens could look through the clothes in a stig-

ma-free environment. All of the clothing was free. “The goal was to help youth in need this holiday season and we accomplished this. Our project was called Teens For Teens, which was teens helping teens in the best way we knew how,” stated Ava Gossen. Fletchers Dry Cleaners donated hangers, Carmen’s Catering donated gift cards for the winning homeroom clothing challenge at LDSS and Lakeside Bakery donated pastries to The Bridge Youth Centre.

Sounds of the Season Christmas show this Friday LEAMINGTON – A fabulous line-up has been slated for Sounds of the Season, a special Christmas show at Dale’s Friday Coffee House on Friday, December 21 at The Bank Theatre. The show will be hosted by Dale and Jan Hall of Folk Roots Radio. “Dale’s is always one of the most fun and special nights of the year,” said Usula Tiessen, president of The Bank Theatre. “We ask our patrons, volunteers and Board Members to bring food, and paper and hygiene items for our food bank drive, and last year we had a Christmas sweater contest. We’re doing it all again and it’s a great way to give back to our community and share some goodies with audience members, while they enjoy

LEAMINGTON – St. Paul’s Lutheran Church is reaching out to the community in hopes of helping keep everyone warm this winter. A Warming Cross was erected on the front lawn of the church at the corner of Sherk Street and Seacliff Drive. “Take what you need, or leave what you can” is the motto. The Warming Cross is stocked each day, as necessary, with bags of warm socks, mitts, hats and scarves. “It’s anonymous – without judgement – you can just take what you need,” said Pastor Sylvia Swiatochik. “We’re focusing on the working poor. There is a need out there. Leamington does have homelessness,” said Pastor Swiatochik. She explained that most of the items are for adults, with some children’s sizes. “Schools take care of the children, our focus is the working poor,” she added. This is the first year for the Warming Cross, which started in November and will continue through the cold winter months, until March. Donations of knitted items or new items are appreciated as well. Call the church office for details on how to donate items at 519-326-3966. The Warming Cross is part of a bigger focus for the church to reach out to the community. “Who is our neighbour? We’re all part of a bigger community,” said Pastor Swiatochik. St. Paul’s Lutheran Church advocates for music and education. The church provides space for the KUMON program as well as the Music Moves Children program and Abridged Opera. St. Paul’s Lutheran Gift Certificates Available! WAPS hosts Winter Fair By Bryan Jessop

The Christmas spirit is alive and well at Wheatley Area Public School. A chance to do some holiday shopping and enjoy festive treats, games and activities were all in abundance Wednesday, Dec. 5 at WAPS, as the school held its annual Winter Fair. A similar event took place at the same location last year, although the 2018 edition was organized and presented to a significantly larger scale. Students, staff and Home and School members alike took part in preparing this year’s event. The fair, which also served as a community open house for local families, was co-chaired by Home and School’s Sam Williams and Jamie Martineau. “It’s a great way to welcome parents and grandparents while getting local groups involved too, Martineau explained of the inspiration behind the fair. As part of the festivities, The Pogue offered its

well-known Irish Mac and Cheese while EDF Renewables presented a hot chocolate bar, both in exchange for donations. At the same time, the WAPS Grade 8 class organized a baked goods sale and sold tickets for a gift basket to help finance a Muskoka Woods field trip. Students and parents presented a selection of holiday-themed games in the school’s hallways while a Grade 1 and Full Day Kindergarten (FDK) team presented STEM activities for visitors. A ‘Make and Take’ craft station was also in-

cluded among the activites. In the library, local vendors offered guests the chance to do some on-site Christmas shopping by representing businesses including Young Living, Bella’s Bath and Body, Norwex, SweetLegs, Pampered Chef, Momasaurus Chewelry and Sea Baubles. All students who attended the fair were entered to win a draw for a tree experience at Warkentin’s Tree Farm while also receiving free admission into that evening’s Wheatley Sharks game against the Blenheim Blades when accompanied by a paying

Photos from Kingsville-Gosfield Heritage Society 1790-2000 A Stroll Through Time According to the Township of Gosfield North, farmers living in this area would organize a “bee” to cut and haul ice from the lake. After cutting chunks of ice the horse teams would pull the sleigh-loads of ice home. The best ice was usually available in January before it became too thick. The ideal size was 16 inches thick, as this size of block was easy to handle and store. Left - In this early photograph, ice is being packed on a horse drawn wagon. Right - The ice blocks are hoisted along a wooden ramp, then loaded onto a truck or wagon. Joe McIntosh of McDonald Street is overseeing the operation.

Pigs of Hope supports Wheels of Hope Campaign helps provide rides to cancer treatments

Friendship Club celebrates Christmas By Bonnie Dawson

WHEATLEY – A good crowd attended for the Wheatley & District Friendship Club’s Christmas party held at the Car Barn on Wednesday, Dec. 12. When members arrived, Linda Wigfield was there collecting payments for the dinner and also the member-

ship fees for 2019 for those who chose to pay that day. Alma Edsall and Nancy Roach were on hand selling the 50/50 tickets. After President Harold Dundas said grace, the members got their food and sat down to a delicious Christmas dinner with all the trimmings.

Before the entertainment began, Janet Hewitt handed out the prizes for the three 50/50 (share the wealth) draws which went to Maggie Hansen, Pat Matier and Janet Hewitt. She also handed out the door prizes to Alma Edsall, Sandra St. Denis, Harold Dundas, Janet Hewitt and Bonnie Dawson.

WINDSOR/ESSEX COUNTY – Sometimes, simply getting to cancer treatment can be a challenge. In Ontario, one in five cancer patients can’t get to their lifesaving appointments. “As a volunteer driver for the Canadian Cancer Society, I have seen firsthand that the Wheels of Hope program truly eases the burden of the patient and their families,” said John Campbell, who has been a volunteer driver for the Canadian Cancer Society for six years. “Whether their concern is making it to different cancer-related appointments, rearranging work schedules to get their loved ones to and from these appointments, or not having the means to get back and forth, I haven’t run into one patient that wasn’t grateful for Wheels of Hope and the drivers.” Help volunteers at the Canadian Cancer Society ensure that people have safe, reliable transportation to all their cancer-related appointments with the Pigs of Hope campaign. Adopt a Piggy Bank for the holidays and fill the piglet’s belly with enough coins to fund a ride to treatment. Name it, dress it up and bring it to all your holiday parties. Keep in mind – their favourite snack is a toonie. To adopt a pig, call or email the Canadian Cancer Society office at essex@ontario. cancer.ca or 519-254-5116 or stop by the office at 3201-#2 Marentette Ave., Windsor, during regular business hours, Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Richard St. Denis, who is an ongoing favourite of the Friendship Club, provided a wonderful blend of Christmas songs and old classics. His repertoire included Winter Wonderland, If We Make It Through December, Pretty Paper, What a Wonderful World, Rudolph the

Red Nose Reindeer, Jingle Bells, Do You Hear What I Hear?, Crystal Chandelier, You Needed Me, Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer, Jingle Bell Rock, I Love How You Love Me, etc. Two of the songs he played, Tie a Yellow Ribbon and Tennessee Waltz,

brought dancers Maggie and Moe Hansen and Alma Edsall and Sandra St. Denis to the floor. Thank you, Richard, for a wonderful musical afternoon. The afternoon ended with the benediction. Until next time… Merry Christmas everyone.

Grants available for tree planting and best management practices ESSEX COUNTY – The Essex Region Conservation Authority (ERCA) is offering grants of up to 80% for projects that help protect the environment. “There’s still time to submit a crop nutrient plan application for a grant of up to 80% of the cost, for watersheds that drain directly into Lake Erie,” said Michael Dick, Agricultural Technician. ERCA is also accepting Clean WaterGreen Spaces grant applications for cover crops in these watersheds. As well, ERCA is looking for landowners interested in planting trees or creating prairie habitat on their property this spring. “Planting trees on your property not only helps the environment, but can improve property value, reduce heating and cooling costs and improve the aesthetics of your

land,” said Rob Davies, ERCA’s Forester. “Some species are only available in very limited quantities, so we would recommend that if you are interested, to contact us as soon as possible.” ERCA provides an online catalogue of tree and shrub species. To participate in the program, individuals must own at least one acre of land and purchase a minimum of 100 seedlings or 15 large stock trees. The deadline for ordering trees is February 1, 2019. “In addition to agricultural grants, we also have programs available to landowners wishing to undertake more significant restoration projects such as reforesta-

tion, buffer strips or prairie planting. We encourage qualified landowners to get in touch with us as soon as possible,” Davies said. For more information about ERCA’s farm stewardship, tree planting and restoration programs, visit essexregionconservation.ca or contact Rob Davies at 519-776-5209 ext. 310 for restoration projects or Michael Dick for agricultural related inquiries.

Wheatley Sharks lower Mooretown Flags By Bryan Jessop

A midseason slump finally wavered for the Wheatley Omstead Sharks, as a 5-2 win versus the Mooretown Flags snapped a four-game losing streak. Wheatley’s record improved to 12-13-0-2 following the most recent win at Wheatley Area Arena Wednesday, Dec. 12, granting the Sharks sole possession of sixth place in the Stobbs Division. The Flags struck first in the opening frame when a deflection from the point eluded Sharks goalie Catalin Morin during Mooretown’s first power play. Cameron Rombouts scored the opening tally. Wheatley stormed back with three of their own however, starting with Dawson Iles tapping a Michael Connolly feed from inside the crease past Jake Wilkins. Delaney MacDonald drew the second assist. Next up, Parker Boyle buried a sharp-angled wrist shot into the far right side in an unassisted effort. Less than three-and-a-half minutes later, Braedon Caetano snapped a Drew Denomey pass into the mesh from the doorstep to give the Sharks a 3-1 lead. Boyle was credited with the other assist. Although the Sharks spent power play opportunities buzzing around the Flags’ end of the rink in the middle stanza, they were unable to expand on their lead. Mooretown pulled

Cougars blank Lions in boys hockey By Bryan Jessop

A string of head-to-head losses against their crosstown rivals has come to an end for Cardinal Carter’s boys hockey team. The Cougars and Leamington District Secondary School Lions met for the first time since the 2017-’18 season, where LDSS came out on top in scores of 6-1 and 5-3. This time, however, Cardinal Carter stood strong on both sides of the puck to register a 5-0 victory. The win improved the Cougars’ record in the WECSSAA Tier II standings to 3-1-1 for second place in the five-team division while the Lions fell to 0-3-1. “We’ve lost our fair share of games against LDSS,” Cougars head coach Ryan Coristine explained. “They’ve got a good program. We had lots of bodies today so we kept our shifts short. We played well today — better than yesterday “This was a (5-5 tie versus Lajeunesse). This was a spirited game, which spirited game, is what rivalries are all about.” which is what “We’ve had problems getting a good breakout,” explained rivalries are LDSS coach Tony Nurse about his team’s latest loss. “They (Cardinal Carter) were fast and put a lot of pressure on us. It all about.” forced us to cough up the puck in our own zone.” — Ryan The game-winning goal was buried by Mitchell DefranCoristine cisco about two-and-a-half minutes into the game when he snapped the rebound off a Luke Tatomir shot over the line from the net’s left side. Defrancisco struck again about seven minutes later by planting a wrist shot from the right side of Cam Newman’s net during an offensive rush. The Cougar’s forwards kept the pressure on in the second frame, where Johnny 10 Sherk Street, Leamington Fiore released a low slap shot

Cardinal Carter also found the back of the net during the opening minute of the third period, where Carson Matronardi set loose a wrist shot from atop the hash marks to the left of the LDSS net. Gerrin Church and Camron Taouil assisted. The game’s only power play goal — despite both sides being handed five minor penalties — was potted by Kanaan Gale off a rebound from the left side of the net. Sam VanGellecum and Daraiche assisted. Adam Zylstra earned the shutout in the Cougars’ net. On December 11, the Cougars and Lajeunesse Royals battled to a 5-5 deadlock. One day earlier, the Royals hosted the Lions in what ended as a 6-6 draw. The Cougars and Lions met again Tuesday, Dec. 18. Results were not available at press deadline. The rivals will go head-to-head for a third time in 2018-’19 Wednesday, Jan. 16 at 3 p.m.

All They Want for Christmas… Imagine, if you will, an 18-year-old kid who’s father allows him more or less unlimited access to his 1968 Chevelle SS 396 to cruise around in and impress his peers. Eventually, the car reaches the point where it needs an engine rebuild, new floor pans, new exhaust from front to back, some rust repair on the fenders and rear quarter panels, a paint job and all the seats reupholstered. It’s not going to be cheap

and the kid’s dad has a few other financial priorities to address before he can have his pride and joy restored… and that could be a few years from now. So, the kid marches on over to city hall and informs council that he wants THEM to foot the bill. Sounds ridiculous, right? Council would just laugh at the kid and tell him to quit wasting their time, right? Well, that’s how such a scenario SHOULD (and probably would) end. Yet,

for some reason, when a professional sports team owner demands that arena/stadium renovations or outright replacement should take place at the expense of the taxpayer, that’s quite often what happens. Sometimes the team owner also owns the arena/ stadium and sometimes he doesn’t. Either way, the “pay for my new toy or I’m going to take my ball and go home” story is getting old. Apparently, the newest chapter in the book of Entitled, Self Absorbed Billionaires Who Think Joe and Jane Average Should Pay For Their Toys is being written by Phoenix Suns owner Robert Sarver. In response to the city’s delay on a vote to treat Talking Stick Resort Arena to a $230 million makeover, Sarver has threatened to move the Suns to either Seattle or Las Vegas. Back in ’92, the Suns signed a 40-year lease agreement with a clause that would allow them to nullify the contract after 30 years if the building was “obsolete” by that time. Talking Stick IS one of the oldest buildings in the NBA, but I’m not sure if that alone makes the place ‘obsolete’. I remember going to a Red Wings game with my dad in 2008 and looking around the innards of the JLA before the game started, wondering why everyone was so vocal about the ‘need’ for the building’s replacement. It was nearly 30 years old at that time, but so what? The Taj Mahal was 360 years old back then and nobody was screaming for ITS demolition. Anyway, Sarver no doubt

JESSOP’S JOURNAL Bryan Jessop saw two glowing opportunities to have his team’s ‘ride’ restored, so he’s running with it… umm, them. The all-new (except the roof) Key Arena will be ready to go for the new Seattle NHL team in 2021 and T-Mobile Arena (home of the Las Vegas Knights) still has that new car smell. Unfortunately, the billionaire brat demands of “build me a new stadium/arena or else…” are not always empty threats. Ask San Diego Chargers or Oakland Raiders fans if you don’t believe me. Some suspect the Calgary Flames could someday be filling out some change of address forms with the word “Houston” filling in the top blank on the front page. Sometimes I wish every major city in North America had an NHL, NBA, NFL and MLB team. Oh, I understand that the talent pools would be watered down considerably, but it’d at least make the relocation threats more laughable. Over and over we’ve heard team owners explain that new accommodations for their teams will boost the local economy and create jobs. Somehow, I get the impression a $230 million investment could create more permanent full time jobs in other sectors, but I’m no economist. Getting back to the original point, I think Sarver’s going to get what he wants sooner than later. ’Tis the season for giving, I suppose.

On Thursday, Dec. 13, the Cougars visited the Kingsville Cavaliers, where they won 46-41. Also on Thursday, the junior Lions travelled to Tecumseh Vista Academy. Leamington lost 35-33. The Southpoint Midget Red team traveled to Tillsonburg Dec. 7-8 and emerged champions at the Max Partlo Midget Memorial Tournament. Their record in the round robin portion was 2 wins and 1 loss with a 3-0 win versus Dresden, 2-1 win versus New Hamburg and a 3-1 loss versus Tillsonburg. The semi-final was a 7-2 win versus Oro. The championship game was against the undefeated Niagara-on-the Lake team. It was a hard-fought game that was tied at 3-3 after regulation time. A 5-minute sudden death overtime didn’t determine the outcome, so a shootout was needed. Each team was al-

lowed three shooters. The first Southpoint shooter was Mason Cabral who shot a laser into the top corner. MVP goalie of the Tournament, Tyler Dibbley, stopped two of Niagara-on-the-Lakes three shooters. It came down to the final shooter, Southpoint’s Sam Van Gellecum. Sam made a spectacular move and then buried the winner. It was a great weekend for Southpoint Midget Red. The players did some team bonding by paintballing Friday night and played some good, disciplined hockey at the tournament.

Novice Major A’s shut out Amherstburg On Fri. Dec. 14 the Southpoint Point Pelee Karting Novice Major A Capitals hosted the Amherstburg Stars at Highbury Canco Arena. Three minutes into the game Jonathan Recker made a nice pass at the blue line to Kayden Cook who wasted no time and rifled his shot in top corner to get the Caps on the board. With 22 seconds to go in the first, Kayde Grossi kept the puck in at the line to Brody Brown who snuck one in short side to increase the lead. Halfway through the middle frame, AJ Youssef found the puck in the corner and weaved his way out front, eventually slipping the puck in past the goalie. Owen Derksen cleared his zone to Zack Bradley, who made a nice head man pass to Youssef who skated in and ripped one in the 5-hole for his second of the game. In the third, Recker, from behind the net, passed out front to Brayden Foster in the slot who fired it in high glove to extend the Caps’ lead. Finally, Cook carried the puck from blue line to blue line and ripped in his second of the game. Southpoint carried most of the play in this contest, easily skating to a much deserved 6-0 victory. Christian Papp, between the pipes, recorded the shutout.

UMEI senior girls volleyball vs. Walkerville The Lightning’s Fiona Tiessen sends the ball above the outstretched arms of two Walkerville blockers during the second set of a WECSSAA Tier II senior girls volleyball match at UMEI Tuesday, Dec. 11. The Tartans won the first set 25-22, but UMEI rebounded to take the second 25-20. Walkerville won the tiebreaker 25-19 to drop the Lightning’s record to 1-1. The busy week for UMEI continued with 25-19 and 25-15 losses and a 25-20 win at Maranatha Wednesday, Dec. 12 and 25-23 win, 2927 loss and 25-16 win at Lamothe-Cadillac Thursday, Dec. 13. (Southpoint Sun Photo)

The Kingsville Novice Green team travelled to Essex this past weekend to take on the Blue team. The Green Machine spent much of their practice time passing the puck and it showed as they deftly moved the puck around the Essex ice to create and capitalize on numerous scoring opportunities. A couple of coaching lapses set up odd man rushes on Quinn Monminie who was bested twice but secured the win in his first game as guardian of the twine. Kleenex stayed in business another day as the game was highlighted by two first goals. Regular starting goaltender Sam Ward made a debut appearance at centre, making a crafty tip to enjoy the view of the lit lamp for the first time in his young career. With the clock winding down, player of the game Corbin Azzopardi forced a puck loose and powered towards the net, making no mistake finding the corner for his first as the horn sounded. Other goal scorers for the Machine included Mackenna Michalski (3), William Loncke (2), Rocco “making a habit of it” Baillargeon, Alexander Pallotto and Jasper Dunford.

The Lions lost in scores of 25-13, 25-21 and 25-22. Next up, the Leamington juniors were swept by the Nobles 25-23, 25-14 and 26-24. Two days earlier, the junior LDSS squad beat Riverside 2-1 with a 25-21 loss and wins of 25-20 and 25-18. Also on Tuesday, the senior Lions lost 2-1 at Maranatha with 25-12 and 25-19 losses and a 25-23 win. (Southpoint Sun Photo)

Ryan Gagnier of the Flyers and Michael Wood of the Rockets battle for control of the puck in the corner to the right of the Rockets’ net during the second period of a GOJHL game Thursday, Dec. 12 at Highbury Canco Arena. The Flyers won 7-1 to extend their winning streak to eight games.

Leamington Flyers soar past Strathroy Rockets By Bryan Jessop

The Leamington Flyers and Strathroy Rockets have been the two hottest teams in the Western Conference as of late. On Thursday of last week, the Flyers proved who is the hotter of the two. The win marked their eighth in a row to put them two points ahead of the Chatham Maroons. Leamington took charge early and registered a convincing 7-1 victory to take sole possession of second place in the conference Thursday, Dec. 13 at Highbury Canco Arena. Leamington opened the scoring less than two minutes into the game when Dylan Weston completed a left to right wraparound to find an opening in the armour of Strathroy goalie Vince Michelizzi. Affiliate player Liam Hall and Matthew Boring drew the assists. Adam Groat made it 2-0 by firing a wrist shot into the mesh from inside the faceoff circle to the left of the Rockets’ goal shortly after taking a pass from Weston. Boring was credited with the second assist. The Rockets replied to cut the lead in half less than a minute later on a delayed Flyer penalty when Emmet Pierce drove home a shot with a scramble in front of Ryan Polidori’s net. Leamington outshot their guests 12-7 through the first 20 minutes. The Flyers dominated the second period from one end of

the ice to the other in the second, adding another four goals to their lead while outshooting the visitors 22-3. The most impressive play however was a Polidori save just prior to the 10-minute mark. Situated in front of his left post, the rookie netminder made a diving save to keep the score at 4-1. Previously, a deflected Josh King blast from the point beat Michelizzi under the crossbar for a man advantage tally assisted by Ryan Gagnier and Groat. Michael Andrews flipped a Gagnier pass into the mesh “We were about three minutes later expecting a close to make it 4-1 on a goal game and made also assisted by Adam a great effort Jeffery. DiNiro tapped a tonight.” Colton O’Brien pass at — Cam ice level to further cushCrowder ion Leamington’s lead after King sent the two away on an odd man rush. Boring scored his first as a flyer after Michelizzi failed to gain control of a bouncing puck after stopping a shot by Weston. Hall drew the second assist. Leamington was more content to kill the clock for the

third period, although the hosts again took control of the play with a 16-4 shots on goal margin. Jeffery closed out the scoring with a shot that glanced off replacement goalie Joshua Diamond and bounced into the lower left side of the goal. Helpers came from Gagnier and Andrews. “We were expecting a close game and made a great effort tonight,” noted Flyers’ head coach Cam Crowder. “It just comes down to taking control of the play in our own zone. When you allow two or less (goals), your do a lot for your chances of being successful.” Since joining the Flyers last month, King has amassed seven points in seven games. The Essex resident credits chemistry and a welcoming atmosphere to his early success with his new team since being traded from Chatham. “This is definitely the place for me,” he said of joining the Flyers. “It’s been a lot of fun and the guys are treating me well. Everything’s going well for us — I’m happy to be here.” On Saturday, Dec. 15, Leamington visited the Sarnia Legionnaires. The Flyers’ winning streak ended at eight games as they lost 3-1. Leamington’s only goal was scored by Michael Andrews. On Thursday, Dec. 20 at 7:10 p.m., the Flyers will host the St. Marys Lincolns.
