RARE SIGHTING OFF POINT PELEE

The colourful American White Pelican made an appearance off the tip of Point Pelee National Park on Tuesday, June 14 and local photographer Deanna Dunn was there to capture the flock of 14 birds as they gathered in the Lake Erie waves.

The American White Pelican is one of North America’s largest birds. The bony protrusion on the top of the beak is called a caruncle, which is there to attract a breeding partner.

The caruncle grows on both male and female adults.

The native of the southern United States will migrate north into the Canadian prairies but in recent years have been seen in and around the Great Lakes.
