Hammond honoured by council, premier

By Mark Ribble

Outgoing Leamington Councillor John Hammond received a very moving surprise at his final regular meeting of council on Tuesday, November 8.

The eight-year veteran was rewarded for his years of service with a surprise video message from Ontario Premier Doug Ford.

In addition, his wife, children and grandchildren showed up in council chambers to witness the special tribute and honour John and his work for the community. Hammond had emotionally thanked members of council just prior to CAO Peter Neufeld announcing that there was someone who wanted to speak to the meeting.

That’s when Ford appeared on the screen and congratulated Hammond for his years of service.

“I just want to give a big shout-out to Councillor John Hammond,”said Ford. “It is a pleasure to wish you a very happy retirement. Your community is so lucky to have had a councillor like you.”

Hammond, who sat on various committees and boards as part of his council position, indicated he hopes to remain on a few non-council committees because he enjoys the rewarding work.

He also hopes to spend some more time camping now that he is officially retired. Hammond retired from the Leamington Fire Department after 45 years on the job a few years ago.

The surprise video from the Premier, orchestrated by John’s oldest son Dan and Leamington Mayor

Hilda MacDonald, was well appreciated by the councillor.

“The kids and grandkids showed up and all council members also got up to speak,” he said. “I really appreciated it.”

The new council was sworn in on Tuesday, November 15.
