Super Ethan's Steps raises $8,000

KINGSVILLE — The 7th Annual Super Ethan’s Steps fundraiser on September 26 raised over $8,000 for the Pediatric Oncology Unit at Windsor Regional Hospital.

The funds will help to purchase some updated hospital equipment, as well as new games and electronics, gas cards and meal vouchers for families travelling between hospitals, therapeutic toys and programs for children who are experiencing anxiety, End of Treatment gifts and more.

“The money remains in our local community and our hope is to bring some smiles, comfort and care to children in Windsor-Essex visiting the unit as well as their families,” said Nicole Abdul-Massih. “The event was virtual again this year, due to COVID, but we are hopeful that we can plan for an outdoor event for next September.”

Nicole’s son Ethan, who was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in 2014, completed his last treatment for the disease in 2017. The family started the Super Ethan’s Steps event to give back.

The 2020 and 2021 events were held virtually for the first time and Nicole says they are grateful for every penny.

“To mark the end of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month with this generous of a result that we know will help so many children and families touched by Childhood Cancer in our community, touches our hearts and reminds our family not only how important it is to continue raising awareness for a disease that is very much not rare, but to do what we can to support the services, organizations and families who are facing the challenges of childhood cancer,” she said.

Their next fundraising event will be their annual “Ethan & Mason’s Ultimate Gift Giving”, in partnership with the Fight Like Mason Foundation. Their hope is fulfill Christmas wishes to for children on active treatment for cancer in the community as well as their siblings.
