Fall fun at the John R. Park Homestead

ESSEX COUNTY – The John R. Park Homestead Conservation Area is welcoming visitors for some old-fashioned fall fun. The historic Park Family farm is offering a variety of autumn programs for all ages and interests. Cost for each program varies.

Harvest Moon, Oct. 7 from 7-8 p.m.: An unforgettable evening featuring a hands-on celebration of all things fall. Enjoy an after-dark tour of the original 1842 home and farm by candlelight. Those brave-of-heart can experience the old-fashioned thrill of scary stories in the Homestead’s pitch black parlour. Less daunting delights include pressing and tasting fresh apple cider, enjoying a traditional seasonal snack from the pioneer hearth, live fiddle music and a toe-tapping barn dance. Corn husk doll crafts are a fun way to celebrate fall at the John R. Park Homestead.

Hands-On at the Homestead, Oct. 17 at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.: Corn husk crafting sessions, including supplies and instruction. This is a drop-in program for ages 7+. Parents must stay with their children during the program. Cost is $5. Pre-registration is not required.

John R. Park After Dark: Tragic Tales & Pioneer Perils, Oct. 22, staggered start times at 7:30 p.m., 8 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.: Guests join costumed guides and step back in time to walk in the footsteps of people from the past in this hour-long program. These dark but true stories will lead you to appreciate the many hazards of daily pioneer life. This Halloween inspired event is geared toward adults. COVID safety protocols are in place at the Homestead and include small group sizes, primarily outdoor activities, and ample space for physical distancing in all areas. Guests need to bring masks to cover their nose and mouth, and will be directed when they are permitted to remove them.

For comfort, be sure to dress for the weather and wear shoes suitable for hiking.
