Renovations longer overdue than any borrowed book are complete and ready to serve the Leamington area’s general public. The Leamington branch of the Essex County Library officially re-opened its doors at 1 John Street Monday, Aug. 12, when it welcomed a crowd of guests, former library employees, dignitaries and speakers to ‘check out’ the new design and new amenities. Leamington municipal CAO Peter Neufeld emceed introductions to speakers including Leamington Mayor Hilda MacDonald, County of Essex library board chairperson and Kingsville Mayor Nelson Santos, Essex County Warden and Tecumseh Mayor Gary McNamara and Chatham-Kent Leamington MPP Rick Nicholls. “An organization’s values are confirmed through their priorities, and this library is one of our priorities,” Neufeld said. Neufeld went on to explain that much of the new and improved library’s design was created to reflect the geographic characteristics of Leamington itself, from the large, blue windows symbolizing the waters of Lake Erie

to sandstone-coloured tiles as the sands of the community’s beaches. He also described the nearby Erie Street sidewalk’s mix of straight and curved pathways as a representation of expectations and challenges faced by some of the region’s residents. “In a town where approximately 22 per cent of the children live in poverty and approximately 50 per cent of those who begin high school do not graduate, a fully functional library can be the great equalizer,” the CAO explained. In addition to the extra 1,200 square feet of new indoor space that brings the building’s surface area from 7,700 square feet to roughly 8,900 square feet and extra print resources, the revamped library includes two enclosed study pods, more computer resources, a “Makers’ Space” with 3D printer, a music recording studio and a video recording studio with green wall. “This is the perfect place for young people to begin their love affair with reading, whether it’s with music, whether it’s getting together and meeting other people, whether its seniors coming and seeing other people who love

The Ontario government has added the widening of Highway 3 to four lanes to their provincial transportation strategy. Ontario Minister of Transportation Caroline Mulroney was in Leamington on Monday morning, August 12 to announce the province’s commitment to the widening of Highway 3 to four lanes from Essex to just west of Leamington. Mulroney made the announcement during a roadside gathering on Highway 3, accompanied

by Chatham-Kent Leamington MPP Rick Nicholls, Essex County Warden Gary McNamara, Leamington Mayor Hilda MacDonald, Kingsville Mayor Nelson Santos, Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkins, numerous other Essex County mayors, members of the Ontario Provincial Police, councillors and the general public. “Widening and improving safety on Highway 3 is a priority for this government,” said Mulroney. “From day one, we have been committed to improving road safety and making life easier for families and businesses by delivering on transportation

Upgrades in the works for Half Century Centre By Bryan Jessop

LEAMINGTON – Leamington’s hub for senior activities and leisurely events is being treated to some improvements both inside and out. While the entire surface of the Leamington and District Half Century Centre’s southern exterior wall is being decorated with a painted mural, the interior is receiving modifications to its “Western Room,” kitchen and washrooms. Windsor artist Martin Lacasse is in the midst of creating a mural based on a theme highlighting some of the activities hosted by the Centre while washrooms are being expanded for wheelchair accessibility. Additionally, the main women’s washroom will include two stalls instead of one. The main men’s room is also being freshened up. The Western Room or gym has received a new epoxy floor with redone shuf-

fleboard surfaces while the kitchen’s renewal will offer space for two stoves instead of the single unit that has been used for the past several years. Washrooms adjacent to the Western Room were each lengthened by about two feet by reassigning under utilized storage closet space. As the work to the Western Room nears completion, washrooms and the kitchen will be next for remodeling. Half Century Centre executive director Christine Lehn noted that employees and members hope to see the project completed by Labour Day of this year. A grand re-opening that will be open to the public is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 8 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The lengthy list of upgrades are being funded through multiple sources including a donation from the estate of Donna Barrows. Additional financial support has come through grants ob-

tained by the centre as well as regularly scheduled fundraisers including a recent yard sale. Lacasse began working on the mural Monday, July 29, starting with sketch work. Owner of the business Lacasse Art (www.lacasseart.com), he is no stranger to projects in Leamington. The 51-year-old artist painted the Erie Shores Hospice mural in May of this year and also four at Sun Parlor Home. Serving all of Windsor and Essex County as well as projects as far as Toronto, Lacasse also created the mural at Elite Restaurant in Kingsville. The Half Century Centre put calls out to various artists before selecting Lacasse, who expects the entire job to take about three weeks or 120 to 140 total hours after adding colour. He explained that outdoor paintings often present challenges with heat, cold, humidity, rain, wind and direct sunlight, but jumped at the

chance for the project at 160 Talbot St. East. “Whenever I get a chance for an outdoor job, I go for it — it’s a lot of fun,” he explained. Management at the Half Century Centre gave Lacasse a theme based on activities that occur regularly within the building’s walls and after he read through a few of the organization’s newsletters, got to work on the concept drawings. One of the drawings was temporarily lost after being picked up by the wind, but was later found by his dog, Amor. Lehn explained that a mural for the 115 foot long wall has been on the centre’s membership wish list for the past 15 to 20 years and that even in its early stages, it’s catching plenty of positive attention. “It’s just been a matter of funding — it’s something our members have wanted for a long time,” she said. “The mural just makes the town look so much nicer. It’s caught a lot of attention and is causing a lot of excitement.”

WHEATLEY – Although the dynamics of the Lake Erie shoreline has created massive challenges for homeowners and businesses, there is one young man – 10-year-old Logan Lefaive of Wheatley – who decided to upcycle some of the washed-up materials he found on the beach and turn it into artwork. As a result, and with the help of his mémé, Logan created “Lerie”. Judging by the look in Lerie’s eyes, it seems that he, too, is amazed by what is happening on the lake. (Submitted Photo)

As six actual vessels make their way to the Kingsville docks for the Tall Ship Celebration, Mike Laforet will display five of his tall ship models at The Grovedale House at the site of the former Kings Landing Restaurant. The 103 Park Street site will display five of Laforet’s tributes to actual historic tall ships including the Cutty Sark, HMS Surprise, HMS Detroit, HMS General Hunter and HMS Bold. The model of the Cutty Shark, measuring in at 5 feet, is the largest of the group. The models will be on display at The Grovedale House from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 17 and 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 18. Leamington to review police services By Bryan Jessop

Mill Street Market Customers admire the variety of works available for purchase at the Zero Fox Design booth Friday, Aug. 9 during the monthly Mill Street Market in Leamington. More than 30 vendors attended this month’s event along Mill Street West, where a steady stream of guests perused the wide variety of food, beverage and arts and crafts options. The next two Mill Street Markets will take place Friday, Sept. 6 and then Friday, Oct. 4, both from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. The last market of the year will be held Saturday, Nov. 30 in conjunction with Leamington’s Santa Claus Parade.

LEAMINGTON – The municipality is about to start shopping around as it considers the policing contract that expires at the end of 2019. During its Tuesday, July 23 meeting, members of council approved a request to attain the services of Michael Mitchell to provide an in depth study of various policing options. Leamington’s current contract with the Essex County Ontario Provincial Police will expire as of December 31 this year. Once the current OPP contract comes to an end, the municipality can opt to renew it, create its own municipal police force with members appointed by the police services board, form an agreement for such services from a nearby municipality or city or amalgamate forces with another community. A report submitted by director of legal and legislative services Ruth Orton noted that the Town of Amherstburg started an agreement with the City of Windsor to receive policing services effective January 1 of this year. Orton also noted, however, that any decision by Leamington to utilize a similar

strategy may garner different results depending on the approach and details of an agreement. Members of council discussed the option of approaching ChathamKent on providing or amalgamating services, but after Councillor John Jacobs inquired about policing being provided by London, Orton noted that such an arrangement would be unlikely.

“This is our opportunity to set the bar. It could be the biggest decision we make in our four years.” — Hilda MacDonald

She explained that a policing partnership between two communities too far apart from one another would likely be denied by the Ontario Civilian Police Commission, although an April, 2017 proposal for St. Marys to be serviced by Stratford was approved. Leamington officially switched from a municipal force to the OPP in December of 2010. The fiveyear term was renewed for a second contract with the local Ontario Provincial Police that will end on New Year’s Eve of 2019. During

its July 9 meeting, council expressed concerns with the services currently being provided by the OPP, where Mayor Hilda MacDonald questioned whether or not Leamington was receiving the appropriate level of service according to the amount budgeted. On acquiring Mitchell’s services, Councillor Paul Tiessen expressed concern over the fact that the cost beyond the first step — less than $3,000 — is currently unknown. Orton said that once the first step of Mitchell’s review is complete, the fees associated with the remainder of his services will be determined once council’s intentions are clear. The report states that it is anticipated that the budgeted amount for Legal Services will be sufficient to cover the costs of Mitchell’s work. “We need someone guiding us with the process of creating an RFP (Request For Proposal),” stated Mayor Hilda MacDonald. “Outside help may help us identify what information we need,” added CAO Peter Neufeld, who explained that conducting a study to pinpoint the best policing option is beyond administration’s area of expertise.

Can’t thank them enough It may take a few weeks to tally up the totals from the Hogs for Hospice weekend, but I’m sure they did well. The traffic down at the south end of town certainly indicated a busy turnout for this worthwhile event. The Hogs committee and their countless number of volunteers really do a great job in making everything go off in the smoothest way possible. It brings a lot of outside cash into this area and that’s always a good thing. Even Wheatley benefited from the Hogs weekend, as the Tour The Tip ride made a rest stop there, giving over 2,000 riders a glimpse of small town life in southwestern Ontario. The bars and restaurants in the village managed to get everyone fed and ‘watered’ before they were on their way. So kudos have to go out to all who particiMark Ribble pated, attended, volunteered and welcomed this event into our communities. The underlying benefit, of course, goes to the Erie Shores Hospice. The hospice has been there for three years now and up until recently, I had not been privy to exactly what goes on in that nice building on Talbot Street West. Now I’m there at least once a week to visit my uncle, who has spent the past several weeks in there. I’ve now witnessed the level of care given by those employees and volunteers at hospice who give so tirelessly of themselves to make everyone’s transition and adjustment such a special, comfortable journey. From tending to patients’ every want and need, to helping families stay comfortable, the folks there do a job that often appears to be unappreciated. When we look at a hospital setting, particularly when a patient is given a terminal diagnosis, the lack of resources available comes into play and the patient often feels helpless and hopeless. Of course, government decisions on healthcare affect those decisions in every hospital and long-term care facility. And although hospitals strive to give the best care possible to everyone, the hospices step in and help relieve that pressure for terminal patients. We should be thankful that Erie Shores Hospice is in our midst. If you haven’t had the need to visit a loved one there, I’m sure that opportunity will present itself at some point in your life. You’ll be amazed at the dedication and level of care that seems to go far and above what we are used to in the Canadian healthcare system. To think that many of the people there are volunteers, just blows my mind. In this day and age of the me-first mentality, it’s great to see that people do care and that those of us who are trying to say a long goodbye to our loved ones, have those shoulders to lean on. So on behalf of my family and all of the families who have experienced the great benefits of Erie Shores Hospice, to the volunteers, Hogs committee, doctors, nurses and everyone involved, I say thank you. It’s the least we can do.

Province announces Highway 3 will be widened (Continued from Front)

The construction of the new regional hospital is not a determining factor in the sustainability of Erie Shores HealthCare, say the Municipality of Leamington and Erie Shores HealthCare. Pictured are Leamington Mayor Hilda MacDonald (left) and ESCH CEO Janice Dawson. (Submitted Photo)

Municipality of Leamington and Erie Shores HealthCare support construction of new regional hospital LEAMINGTON – At its July 23 meeting, Leamington Council voted unanimously in support of a resolution backing the construction of the new regional hospital, also known as the mega-hospital, at its proposed location on County Road 42. The Municipality of Leamington and Erie Shores HealthCare (ESHC) want to assure residents that the construction of the new regional hospital is not a determining factor of the sustainability of ESHC (formerly known as the Leamington District Memorial Hospital). ESHC continues to be a growing and thriving community acute care hospital that services an ever-expanding catchment area of residents from all across Essex County and Windsor. ESHC is experiencing significant growth in its Emergency Department (ED), Diagnostic departments, lab, and inpatient units. ED volumes are increasing annually by 2,000 to 3,000 visits per year with projections of 37,000 visits in 2019 and current average occupancy rates are 100% or greater. ESHC is gaining recognition across the province, most recently ranked number one in the province in the time it takes to get admitted patients out of the ED and into an inpatient bed. ESHC also has the region’s shortest emergency room wait times and the best EMS (ambulance) offload times in Windsor-Essex. “Leamington Council supports the construction of the new regional hospital at its proposed location, as it will improve accessibility to the majority of residents of WindsorEssex County,” said Mayor Hilda MacDonald. “We want to let residents know we have confidence in the sustainability of our hospital in Leamington. Fortunately, Leamington residents will continue to benefit from having a hospital in their backyard, as well as easier access to a regional hospital should they require advanced specialty services.” “Erie Shores HealthCare is growing to meet the healthcare needs in our communities,” said Janice Dawson, CEO of ESHC. “Our hospital has invested $1 million in additional front line resources. The percentage of patients arriving at the ED in an ambulance has increased by 45 per cent. Our staff and physicians are doing an amazing job to not allow this significant increase in their workload impact the quality of care. We are here to stay, grow and invest in our staff, programs and resources. We support the new mega hospital and Erie Shores HealthCare will continue to be an integral pillar of healthcare across the region. We continue to be a major player in healthcare for all of Essex County – providing Compassionate Care Close to Home.”

times for residents and commercial vehicles. Construction for the widening is expected to begin in 2021 after public consultations and environmental assessments are completed. “The Municipality is relieved to hear of the completion of the widening of Highway 3 to Leamington, improving the safety of Leamington and Essex County residents and visitors, who travel the highway daily with increasing frequency. This expansion will allow for more efficient export of products grown and manufactured in Leamington, supporting our thriving local economy,” said Leamington Mayor MacDonald. The single lane stretch of road has had several serious and fatal crashes. Melissa Knight, sister of Tyler Knight who was killed in a head-on collision on June 7 of this year was disappointed that the widening was not happening faster, and not going all the way to Leamington. “We’re frustrated. Look at the traffic, look at all the greenhouses. We need four lanes with dividers. We all have to look at our own driving habits, but we need four lanes here to give drivers a chance,” she said. Mulroney said the highway will be widened to four lanes in segments from the

Town of Essex to just west of Leamington (1.1 km east of County Road 34), for a total of 20.5 km. Earlier this year, Essex County mayors were disappointed that widening Highway 3 was left out of the provincial budget. “This is just the beginning,” said Kingsville Mayor Santos. “There’s going to be a lot more studies, environmental assessments,

Public Information Sessions… That’s when we’ll get really excited.” In a separate project also announced Monday, Highway 3 will also be repaved between County Road 34 and Highway 77 in Leamington under a separate contract, also expected to start in 2021. An estimated 17,300 vehicles travel this stretch of Highway 3 per day.

Reinvented Leamington Library officially opens

(Continued from Front) books like the staff,” explained MacDonald, who described a life-long affection with public libraries. “It’s an opportunity to get together and meet with other people — it just offers so many things to so many people. In the old days, libraries were just about books and that was it. Now, we’ve evolved — society has evolved and it’s about so much more.” “Whether it’s printed books, programs and/or service, this reopening is the perfect invitation to get your library card back in action,” Santos added. The Kingsville mayor also noted that the opportunity to hone digital skills through the facility’s new Makers’ Space, audio and video rooms is a first for the Essex County Public Library system. “What I see here today is basically the transformation of

what libraries should be in the future,” said McNamara. “It’s not just about books anymore. It’s a place where, especially the young ones, like to socialize. These are the key pieces to any community.” Construction on the library was provided by Windsorbased Vince Ferro Construction of Windsor while Joe Passa of Passa Associates Architects orchestrated the redesign of the facility. Despite a few unforeseen obstacles during construction, the official opening came only a few days after its anticipated August 1 date. The block letter “Library” sign along the far east end of the building’s south wall was created by Unit 11 — the same firm responsible for the “Toronto” sign in the provincial capital’s Nathan Philips Square and the Canada 150 signs made to represent the nation’s sesquicentennial birthday in 2017. Through computer con-

trolled commands, the letters of the sign can be illuminated in a variety of colours to reflect different holidays, events and awareness campaigns. “I am just so excited — the whole thing is beautiful,” aid Essex County Library Leamington branch community supervisor Sue Tuck. “There’s so much more light and so much more

Miss You Dad I miss you more than ever... Your guidance and your love. But, I know you’re still watching Silently from above. The love you gave still warms me The way it always will. But leaving left an empty space That time can never fill. From heaven you’re still giving The love you always had. I know you hear me talk to you I will always love you Dad.

We miss you every day and love you with all our hearts. Love, Shelley, Brandon, Troy, Tracy, Jeff, Brett and Matthew

When God was making husbands, as far as I can see, He made a special soulmate especially for me. He made a perfect gentleman, compassionate and kind, With more love and affection than you could ever wish to find. He gave my darling husband a heart of solid gold, He gave me wonderful memories only my heart can hold. He was someone I could talk to that no one can replace, He was someone I could laugh with till tears ran down my face. Next time we meet will be at Heaven’s door, When I see you standing there I won’t cry anymore. I will put my arms around you and kiss your smiling face, Then the pieces of my broken heart will fall back into place. Hon, I’ve loved you since we met. Always have and always will. Love, your wife Shirley

to offer to the public. The old building really needed a redo. I feel happy when I walk in. The town did a wonderful job.” Plans for a revitalized library began in early 2018 with the project tendered that summer. Construction began in late October while the Leamington branch was temporarily relocated to the former Hakim Optical on Erie Street South. Including expenses involved with the temporary space, the library project came in slightly under its budget of $1.6 million. The Leamington library at its current site was built in the 1950s with an addition constructed in 1974. Other renovations have included improvements to the programming room in 1990, an interior redesign in 1998 and a roof rebuild in 2011.

Radio club promoting Lighthouse Awareness Amateur radio station will be set up Aug. 17 KINGSVILLE – The weekend of August 17 and 18 is International Lighthouse Lightships Awareness. The objective of the event is to promote public awareness of lighthouses and lightships and their need for preservation and restoration, while at the same time promoting amateur radio and fostering international goodwill. Lighthouses are fast becoming an endangered species with the introduction of Global Positioning Systems and Satellite Navigation and the automation of the light source to solar power, which has resulted in the withdrawal of management personnel (lighthouse keepers). On Saturday, Aug. 17 at the Kingsville Museum Lighthouse (145 Division St. S.), from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., an amateur radio station will be set up to operate and commemorate these navigation aids that are loved by so many people. Amateur radio was in many cases the only means available for lighthouse operators to communicate to the outside world for months on end and it was also a vital part of the lighthouse operations to talk to ships. The event is being hosted by the South Shore Radio Club and the Kingsville Historical Park Museum. All are welcome to attend. For more information, visit https://illw.net A group from Leamington recently attended the MEDA Ukraine Project Trip where they paid a visit to a greenhouse client in the Zaporizhia region. Leamington contingency takes MEDA trip to Ukraine LEAMINGTON – The Mennonite Economic Development Associates (MEDA) recently organized a group trip to the Ukraine to visit some of their ongoing projects. MEDA creates Business Solutions to Poverty and is delivering on a sevenyear project in the country. Ukraine Horticultural Business Developments Project (UHBDP) is a $23.9-million split between MEDA supporters ($4.6-million) and Global Affairs Canada ($19.3-million). Those committed dollars are impacting 44,000 small to medium enterprises (SME) with a focus on training, cooperation between other SME's and improving access to finance, particularly those led by women. The Leamington area group of six included Roger and Laura Tiessen and Bill Wiebe, who represent MEDA Leamington, and

they were joined by Herb Enns, Ken Enns and Isaak Harder. There is a deep connection to the Ukraine for many Mennonite farmers in the Leamington area. Their ancestors, along with other Europeans, were initially invited by Katherine the Great to move from Prussia to the fertile lands of the Ukraine with many settling in small villages on either side of Dnieper River. The Mennonites were attracted to the promises of self rule, freedom of religion and exemption from military service. Over time, the villages grew and the Mennonites became well known for the cooperative methods and success as farmers and supporting businesses to the farming sector. On Saturday, August 17 starting at 5 p.m. at the Leamington Marina Pavilion, the annual fundraiser for MEDA Leamington will

take place. The evening will include photos and video from the trip, along with detailed personal experiences being shared by some of the group members. Chairperson Robert Konrad says this will be an important evening for updates on the Ukraine project. "We are extremely pleased to have local representatives share their experience from the Ukraine trip. The event will be an inspiration for our supporters while raising funds to assist in sustaining the project," he said. The August 17 speakers will include Dr. Dorothy Nyambi, MEDA's President & CEO, and Michael White, MEDA's Chief Engagement Officer. A meal will be provided. Tickets for the event are available at www.meda. org/leamington-events or by calling Robert Konrad at 519-324-2339.

Mosquito Majors’ Pitcher Carter Chorba of the Major Mosquito Lakers.

Noah Friesen put in another star turn, pitching four innings, allowing zero runs and striking out five. On top of that, he scored another home run to follow up from the previous week and led the way with five RBIs. Rhys Tipper and Chris Joseph were close behind with three each, while Owen Deneau, Liebrock and K. Joseph also scored RBIs. Belle River scored a consolation run in the fifth inning and Lakers won 16-1. OBAs are on the horizon at month’s end with more games to come in the following weeks.

Or

Josh Joseph, Kurtis Joseph and Grant Symons resulted in six runs in the final inning. The boys just had to limit the Stars, with Chorba accounting for two before exhausting his pitches. Symons finished off the last batter for an exciting 10-5 win. Friday, Aug. 2 saw the boys face Belle River and it was expected to be another tense game. It wasn’t. After a scoreless first, the Lakers came alive scoring three runs in the second inning, five in the third and four in both the fourth and fifth.

It was a busy week for the Leamington Lakers Major Mosquitoes, sponsored by Leamington Chevy-BuickGMC. A Monday game against LaSalle Gold fell victim to the weather, so it was on to Wednesday, July 31 and the Windsor Stars AAA Mosquito Majors. It was a close, tense game throughout. Zack Liebrock took the mound to lead things off and kept it tight through three innings, striking out four and allowing only three runs. Windsor took the lead in the first, but the Lakers to retaliated with two runs in the second, thanks to a double RBI from Max Carr. The lead changed hands several times with the scores all tied at four heading into the seventh with Matthew Giesbrecht and Trent Szorvas coming in to score runs. Carter Chorba came in to pitch the second half of the game, allowing only two runs overall and striking out three. Having held the AAA team until the final inning, relief flowed through the Lakers. Talbot Trail seniors league enjoys another super golfing day By Bob McLean

Bounty from the County golf tournament raises $3,680 for Kingsville Food Bank Orchard View Golf Course once again hosted its annual Bounty from the County ladies golf tournament on July 19. This year the tournament raised $3,680, over twice as much as last year. The funds raised were donated to the Kingsville Community Food Bank. The tournament would not be the success it has been without the generous donations from community business and individuals. Orchard View would like to thank all those who sponsored holes, donated prizes and services, as well as the 100 participants for their generosity. Pictured from left to right are Bounty From the County tournament organizers, from left to right, Joan Kettle, Sharon Bee and Lindsay Friesen with Linda Lynch and Guy Merry, coordinators at the Kingsville Community Food Bank. On Tuesday, August 6, there were 64 league members and one guest participating in senior play at Talbot Trail Golf Club. Mother Nature certainly has made up for the very poor spring golf weather. Firing a miraculous shot to within three feet of the pin on #9 was Bill Ward. Dutchy sank a 14-footer on #2 to earn top long putter two weeks in a row. Three players in the under 70 division who tied with outstanding 37s were Arkey, Tom Dunn and Gerry van Deven. Three shots back with their own inspiring 40 scores were Joe Drummond, John Liddell and Phil Humphries. Steady playing Kevin Jordan earned a terrific 41. Herb Reid and Randy Nash achieved superb scores of 42 and 43, respectively. Steve Longeway and Tim Stevenson both merited very solid 44s. Bummy and Shananigan achieved very commendable 45s. Others who earned results

less than 50 were OV, Fred Michano, Randy Zeray, Fuzzy, Wiz and Bob Reid. Dave Dibbley and Art Regehr came in with satisfying nifty 50 results. The top overall player of the day won’t come as a surprise. Dutchy topped his division as well as the whole field with his terrific 36. A distant five shots back was Bobo who achieved an excellent 41. Bill Ward merited a terrific 42. Joe Vrtel merited a superb 44. Four golfers who tied with inspiring 45s were Paul Harrison, Gus Brown, Ray la Pierre, and Al Matthews. These players received commendable results that were less than 50: Larry Schmidt, Wayne Humber, Bob Scott, Doug Langlois, Tom Sasso and Gary Benninger. Richard Humber obtained the sole nifty 50. In the 80-84y division, long hitter Mike Wright continued his outstanding play with his excellent 44. Superb golfers Tom Hyatt and Neil Adamson played extremely well as they scored terrific 46s. Pete

Daudlin earned a satisfying nifty 50. Ed Woelk played well to produce a commendable 51. Satisfying 52s were shot by Walter Balsam, Bill Edwards, Andy Orsini and Carl Robinson. In the 85y+ division, Dave la Bonte fired a spectacular 42. Gerry Becigneul produced another excellent result of 47. Murray Cascadden, Erle Nash and Fred Takaki played very well as they also achieved praiseworthy results. Special thanks to Shannon Wiper and OV for barbecuing the food last week. The Guardian Drugs scramble will occur on August 20.

Wiz sinks hole in one Wiz Derbyshire hit a super shot within a few feet of the pin on #9 on Friday morning, Aug. 9. The ball rolled in for a hole-in-one. Congratulations, Wiz! A winner credits his “good luck” for winning, even though it wasn’t good luck; a loser blames his “bad luck” for losing, even though it isn’t bad luck.

Local swimmer competes in nationals By Bryan Jessop

training and practicing for competition. The time invested in the sport has paid off, as Moavro emerged as the silver medal winner in the 100 m breaststroke at the Summer Festival in Markham June 14-16 — a placing that has qualified him for next year’s Eastern Canada junior competition at the Windsor Aquatic Centre in April. From June 27 to June 30, Moavro made the trip to Brantford for the Summer Ontario Youth Junior Championships. There, he captured the gold medal in the 200 metre breaststroke to qualify for the nationals in Calgary. As a member of the Windsor Aquatic Club, Lucas was joined by fellow team members Brendan Oswald, Madelyn Gatrall and Jayne Harcarufka in Calgary. In February of this year, a broken ankle sidelined Moavro for about six weeks before he could get back into the pool to resume training. The local teen recently moved from Leamington to Kingsville and will be starting high school as a Grade 9 student at Cardinal Carter Catholic Secondary School this September.

Lucas Moavro has done a lot more than simply keep his head above water. He’s gone through it quickly enough to race Canada wide. The 14-year-old competitive swimmer recently returned home from competing in the 2019 Swimming Canada Canadian Junior Championships in Calgary, Alb. There, he entered the 14- and 15-year-old boys 200 metre breaststroke among more than 30 of the fastest swimmers from across the country. After a seeding time of 2:40.10, Moavro set a new personal best time of 2:39.05 in the preliminary race at the Repsol Sport Centre’s Lindsay Park Pool Saturday, July 27. The following day, he entered the boys’ 14- to 18-year-old 200 metre individual medley race as a bonus swim and registered another personal best of 2:31.41. “This season, I would really like to obtain the highest FINA points among 12 to 15-year-old boys and represent Windsor-Essex County and Canada at the International Children’s Games in Hungary next summer,” Moavro explained. The IGC is an event sanctioned by the International Olympic Committee for youths 12 to 15 years of age. Additionally, Moavro hopes to again qualify for the Canadian Nationals, to be held next summer in Montreal. Moavro has spent the past two years as a member of the Windsor Aquatic Club. Six years ago, he began swimming competitively with the Leamington Lasers swim team based out of the Leamington Kinsmen Recreation Complex. With the WAC, he has spent six days a week

Senior Men’s Invitational held at Erie Shores Golf Club With the slick and manicured track of Erie Shores golf course just a bit on the soft side August 7 due to a heavy rainstorm the day before, no one managed to break or shoot par in the 40th Annual Don Nicholson Memorial Senior Men’s Invitational this year. Leading the way with their exceptional one over par rounds of 72 were Tom Wigle of Windsor and Ward Hutchins of Erie Shores. Quite a pair for a sudden death playoff match with Hutchins being a past seniors winner three years ago and Wigle, a new senior on the block at 56 years of age, being a two-time winner, 30 and 31 years ago, of the Erie Shores Invitational – an event that ran for 38 years before ending its run after 2005. This seniors playoff turned out to be a quick wham bam thank you ending with the younger Tom Wigle knocking in a fourfoot birdie putt to edge out Ward Hutchins for the seniors title and the Don Nicholson Memorial trophy. Among the seven golfers finished tied for third spot, three shots back at four over par 75, were Ken Steingart and Kevin Babkirk of Erie Shores, Denton Whited and

Michael Stanko of Sutton Creek, Brain Brawley of Maple City, Mike Saffran of Ambassador and Barry Kenshol of Fox Glen. Randy King of Pike Lake and Ken Parent both tied for tenth place at 76, while Bill Ruiter of Erie Shores, Gene Pavan of Kingsville, Ken Greenwood of Beach Grove, Terry Austin of Highland, Bill Marshall of

Fox Glen and Karl Nielsen all finished another stroke back at six over par 77. Rob Widmeyer of Pike Lake and Erie Shores members Greg Dunmore, Todd Hodgson and Tim Towle all had seven over par rounds of 78, while Jerry Hatt of Talbot Trail, Marcello Cuzzolino of Ambassador and Denis Murphy of Pointe West also broke 80 with

On a very bright, warm, summer day, July 31, the fourth and final matches were played in the Sol Leam Cup held at Erie Shores Golf Course. Going into Day 4, the Red Team was ahead by a mere two points and the determined Blue Team tried to fight back. Red prevailed on this day by keeping the cup! Red Team members are, front row, left to right: Lisa Fehr, Brenda Ruiter, captain Lori Kelly, Beth Conn, Muriel Davey. Back row: Lynda Mastronardi, Nancy Flynn, Diana Jones, Jean Penner, Cindy Brown, Vi Gillett, Carol Cornies. Absent from photo: Sherri Michaelis. their eight over par scores of 79. Allan Jarvis of Roseland, Gary Koestler of Kingsville and David Conant all tied for best low net rounds of the day with six under par net 65s. The 40th Annual Invitational was another great success this year and con-

tinues to be one of the top drawing senior invitational events in all of Windsor and Essex and Kent counties, thanks to the financial support of the Friends and Sponsors of Erie Shores, a generous group of 17 members and businesses who support all of Erie Shores’ major events.

Next year’s Seniors Invitational is set to take place at Erie Shores on Wednesday, August 5 with a shotgun tee-off start at 11 a.m. Any male golfer 50 years of age or over, by that date, is welcome to play. More information will be on the Erie Shores website in the spring of 2020.

Flyers sign new and returning players By Bryan Jessop

The Leamington Flyers aren’t paying too much attention to the Dog Days of Summer. Instead, the local Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League team is focusing intently on the steadily approaching 2019-20 Junior ‘B’ campaign, having recently signed three more players to its roster. On Wednesday, Aug. 7, the Flyers officially welcomed defenseman Jaydon Fetter back into their lineup. The Windsor resident spent the 2018-19 season with the British Columbia Hockey League’s (BCHL) Merritt Centennials, where he collected 22 assists in 52 games. Fetter, who turns 20 in November, will be enrolling in the Human Kinetics program at the University of Windsor. The 5’ 11” blueliner was named to the Western Conference’s All Star Team as a Flyer in 2017-18, where he had 10 goals and 21 assists for 31 points in 45 regular season games — making him Leaming“It’s another ton’s top defenseman in points. In total with the great sign for our Flyers, he has tallied 17 organization to have goals and 39 assists for two well-regarded 56 points in 95 regular players from Team season matches. He has Michigan join us also collected 20 points this season.” in 28 playoff games with — Justin Solcz Leamington. “He’s had a lot of success in this league already,” noted Flyers general manager Justin Solcz. “It’s great to have a 20-year-old with his experience coming back to the team. He wants to prepare himself for the University of Windsor’s hockey team, so this is a great fit for both parties.” Two days later, the Flyers signed cards to a pair of rookies hailing from Michigan. Forward Dylan Montie (6’ 1”) and defenseman Joey Johnson (5’ 11”) both competed in Michigan’s high school hockey system and are former members of Team Michigan. Montie, 19, is a Brighton, Michigan, resident who spent last season with the Topeka Pilots of the NAHL and earned First Team All Star honours with Detroit Catholic Central in 2017-18. Johnson spent last season with Dow Michigan High School and was named to the Second Team All Stars. “It’s another great sign for our organization to have two well-regarded players from Team Michigan join us this sea-

son,” said Solcz. “We look forward to helping them develop and reach their goals of playing collegiate hockey.” Despite the recent signings and the addition of Spencer Lecott earlier this summer, the Flyers still have offensive and defensive positions to fill before the 2019-20 season kicks off. The team will run its annual Main Camp Friday, Aug. 16 to Sunday, Aug. 19, combining a series of practices, games between three teams of tryout hopefuls, a three-on-three competition and then an all star game to wrap up the weekend on Sunday. Leamington has also worked four games into its pre-season exhibition schedule made up of home-and-away series against the neighbouring LaSalle Vipers and Chatham Maroons. On Wednesday, Aug. 21 in LaSalle, the Flyers will start the preseason with a 7 p.m. game before hosting the Vipers the following day with a 7:10 p.m. start at the Leamington Kinsmen Recreation Complex. On Thursday, Aug. 29, the Flyers will host a 7:10 p.m. start against the Maroons before heading to Chatham Tuesday, Sept. 3 for a 7 p.m. opening faceoff. On the ice, Leamington will be led by 20-year-old veterans Adam Jeffery, Dylan Weston, Kade McKibbon and Fetter. The mix of return players and rookies will start the season with the Showcase Weekend games at the Meridian Community Centre in Pelham. The Flyers will face the St. Catharines Falcons Saturday, Sept. 7 at 8 p.m. and then take on the Sutherland Cup champion Waterloo Siskens Sunday, Sept. 8 for another 8 p.m. start. “That’s just what we want,” Solcz said of the challenging start to the regular season. “We want to play the best in the league to see where we’re at. It’ll be a good measuring stick to start the year.” Leamington will begin its Western Conference season on home ice Thursday, Sept. 12 at the traditional 7:10 p.m. start time against the St. Thomas Stars.

ARIES – Mar 21/Apr 20 Don’t let your emotions get the best of you in a heated situation, Aries. You can come out on top if you remain calm and think through your responses with utmost caution. TAURUS – Apr 21/May 21 Taurus, there are a few different ways you can play an upcoming situation. Taking a back seat and letting another person lead the way may be the smartest strategy.

CROSSWORD PUZZLE

GEMINI – May 22/Jun 21 A few opportunities may drop into your lap, Gemini. However, just because things come about easily does not mean they are the right choices for right now. CANCER – Jun 22/Jul 22 Cancer, keeping things bottled up until the last minute seems to be the way you have been operating lately. You may want to try sharing your feelings and seeking feedback. LEO – Jul 23/Aug 23 Wearing your emotions on your sleeve may get you attention, Leo, but it won’t necessarily be the kind of attention you were hoping for. Reconsider what you share. VIRGO – Aug 24/Sept 22 Virgo, it can be challenging to relinquish control, but that is just what you will have to do at some point this week. This will be a good lesson to learn. LIBRA – Sept 23/Oct 23 It’s hard to see someone’s perspective when you have never gone through this particular situation, Libra. Keep that in mind when supporting a loved one in need. SCORPIO – Oct 24/Nov 22 All it takes is a subtle change of perception to turn a situation around, Scorpio. Start by taking a few risks outside of your comfort zone for some new inspiration. SAGITTARIUS – Nov 23/Dec 21 Sagittarius, it is good to be proud of your accomplishments. Just be sure not to come across as boastful, especially in certain company. You don’t want to come across as bragging. CAPRICORN – Dec 22/Jan 20 Capricorn, asking for help is not admitting weakness. If you feel you are in over your head, call in the reinforcements. Then you can get back on track more quickly. AQUARIUS – Jan 21/Feb 18 Good fortune is coming your way, and you can certainly spread the wealth if you desire, Aquarius. Chances are there are a few other people who can use a smile in the weeks to come. PISCES – Feb 19/Mar 20 Job security may have you sticking with a position long after the time has come to move on, Pisces. Reexamine the bigger picture and your goals. Jim Madigan in Ford T-shirt with his black 1949 Ford.

1949 Ford a blast from the past On the afternoon of Friday, June 7, Jim Madigan of nearby Windsor arrived at the third annual All-Ford Car Show at the historic Essex Railway Station in the town of Essex. He was driving a ’49 Ford that was truly a blast right out of the past! Every teenager I can remember from the late 1950s was either driving a ’49 Ford or wanted one. The cars were nine or ten years old by then and coming down in price. It had to be a two- Bill Sherk door (four-doors were for squares), it had to be black just like James Dean’s ’49 Merc in Rebel Without a Cause, it had to have wide whitewalls and the wheel rims had to be repainted a bright red. Hubcaps? Who needs them? The hubcaps had to go so everyone would know you were driving your own car and not your father’s car. Your dad would never dream of removing the hubcaps from his own car and certainly would not paint the rims Fire Engine Red! The flathead V8 under the hood (what hood? Take it off!) had to have dual carbs, finned aluminum heads and dual exhausts with Hollywood mufflers. And if you couldn’t afford Hollywoods, you punched holes in your muffler with a hammer and nail. The ’49 Ford had great handling with its new independent front suspension and parallel rear leaf springs, with room for lowering blocks to create the “speedboat” look so popular back then. Great handling to match the great performance! The hood missing off Jim’s car reminds me of the ’51 Buick hardtop owned by Don Brown, a deejay many years ago on our local radio station CJSP. Don was driving to Chatham one evening on a gig when a transport truck going the other way sucked the hood right off his car. It flew into a cornfield but Don couldn’t stop because he was already running late. When he arrived at the dance, the teenyboppers thought their deejay was really cool because he drove a car with no hood. Don looked for it on the way home but it was nowhere to be found. Maybe someone else needed it more than he did. I’m always looking for stories. Email billtsherk@sympatico.ca

Flying Dutchmen take over lead in Thursday men’s golf It’s now halfway through the dog days of summer and the Leamington Canadian Tire Men’s Thursday Night League at Erie Shores Golf Club is running at full swing with 128 players enlisted, making it the largest league in the Tri-County area. In team play on August 8, there’s now a new leader as the Flying Dutchmen have finally sailed ahead of the Fore Horseman and the Weapons of Grass Destruction with an impressive 17-point evening, giving them a grand total of 165 points and a three-point lead over the Fore Horseman and a five-point advantage over the Weapons of Grass Destruction. Following in fourth place, a distant 12 points back at 148, is the Grip It and Sip It team, while the Duffers and Bluffers slipped back to fifth spot with their total of 145. In individual low gross play, Mike Ferreira led the way again last week as low shooter with a smooth two under par 33 on the front side. Tied for second place with even par rounds of 35 were Geoff Dunmore, Dave Owens, Mike Foster, Tim Tiessen, Ward Hutchins, Brian Humphreys, Raoul Morin, Kyle Humphreys and Joe Schnekenburger. Another group of players one shot behind with their one over par scores of 36 included Diedrich Reimer, Greg Zimney, Ryan Peltier, Will Peters and Richard Lowes. In the handicap division, Terry McLaughlin shot an impressive six under par net 29 to finish a couple of strokes ahead of Joe Schnekenburger’s net score of 31. Diedrich Reimer and Ralph Warkentin were next at 32, while George Bergen, Will Peters and Frank Meloche all finished with net two under par 33s. In the skins competition, it was the quietest night on record with only four skins recorded. Will Peters and Paul Barnable each made birdie skin threes, while Dan D’Alimonte and Terry McLaughlin both had net eagle skins two. In the total skins money standings, Wray Pollock still leads the way with $50 with Nick Sawatzky and Paul Barnable tied for second at $47. George Kir is alone in fourth spot with $41, while Mike Ferreira is in fifth place with $39. COMMERICAL • RESIDENTIAL Kyle Humphreys is next at $37, and Bill Slater, Darryl DiMilo and Matt Dick are all tied for seventh in the standings with $35. The Leamington Lakers Rookie Major travel baseball team participated in its fourth tournament this season, the LaSalle Turtle Club Green & Gold Classic, over the civic holiday weekend, Aug. 2 to 4. As with the past three tournaments, the Rookie Lakers completed round robin play undefeated with a 3-0 record. The first game saw the Lakers completely dismantle the Belle River Braves in a three-inning mercy rule game. The Lakers came out slugging and cruised to a 21-0 victory. The second game had the Lakers oppose the Beamsville Stingers from the Hamilton-St. Catherine’s area. Perhaps it was the early Saturday morning start, but the Lakers never fully found their stride against the scrappy Stingers. Though they did not play one of their better games, the Rookies were still able to hold on for an 8-7 victory. In game three, the Leamington Lakers squared off against the hard-hitting North London Nationals. Despite their opponents’ strong plate presence early in the game, the Lakers were able to keep their own bats going and closed out round robin play with a 21-11 win. In the semi-final round,

the Lakers were again matched against Beamsville. This time around, the Lakers were clicking on all cylinders as the finished the game in four innings by mercy rule, 20-5. The quarter-final round pitted the Lakers against rival LaSalle Titans. The Lakers atoned for their previous tournament finals loss to the Titans by winning 13-7. The win once again placed the Lakers in the finals for the fourth time in four tournament appearances. This time the Lakers were matched against another familiar foe, the Tecumseh Rangers. The Lakers were looking to exact their revenge

for a finals loss against the Rangers in the first tournament of the year, and the Leamington Rookies were able to do just that. Behind the strength of a total team effort, the Lakers kept their momentum going and defeated the Rangers 15-12. The win capped off a fantastic weekend of baseball for the Rookie Lakers. This season, the Rookies have been able to capture two wins and two runner-up medals in four tournaments played. They are now focused on the final and most important tournament of the year, the OBA championship, which is set to take place Labour Day weekend.

Happy Birthday was sung to Doreen Armstrong and Barb Siddall, the two members with August birthdays. The blessing followed. Thanks to Doreen Armstrong who was on lunch and provided a delicious assortment of pies with ice cream for dessert. The 50/50 draws were won by Donna Moody and Marjorie Torrance. The Torrance Sisters – Marjorie and Ruth – along with Bob Dawson were musical guests at this meeting. They provided a lovely program of well-known favourites such as “Crystal Chandelier”, “Footsteps Walking With Me”, “Welcome To My World”, “Silver Wings”, “Coat of Many Colours”, “It’s Good To Be Back Home Again” and Dale Butler’s “Summertime”, to name a few. They ended with a gospel medley which included “I’ll Fly Away”, “I Saw the Light”, & “Will the Circle Be Unbroken”. Thanks Marjorie, Ruth & Bob for an entertaining afternoon. The next meeting will be on Wednesday, Aug. 21 at 1:30 p.m. It will feature donuts and Bingo.

The Jack Miner Bird Sanctuary on Road 3 West in Kingsville hosted its second of two Uncle Jack’s Summer Fun Weeks for 2019, where youths ages six to 11 signed up for a schedule of games, activities, nature walks and identification hikes and crafts. On Thursday, Aug. 9, summer student employees including Gabi Jezierska volunteered themselves as mummies to be wrapped in toilet paper as part of a ‘Halloween in August’ theme. The five-day program, also held in early July, was attended by 11 students last week. The Fun Weeks are in their third return year after a brief hiatus that followed earlier renditions of the program. (Southpoint Sun Photo)

BELLA

SAVANAH

2 years old - Boxer/Mastiff. Hi, I’m Bella! I’m a sweet and goofy girl who can’t wait to make friends! I love sitting right in front of you soaking up all the love and pets! If you are looking for a gal that loves walks, but can also relax down beside you, then look no further... here I am!!! To top it all off I am pretty smart too.

1 year old - Savannah enjoys human company as long as it doesn’t involve her tail. Her sweet demeanor changes in a flash...actually in a hiss and growl...if her tail is handled. And then you’ll have to work to regain her trust because she will hiss and growl if you approach her again too quickly. For this reason she needs a home without small children.
