A Night in

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Leamington hosted ‘A Night in Bethlehem’ on Saturday evening, December 19, at their Fraser Road church. They took a step back in time to focus on the nativity and the birth of Jesus, with an old world marketplace, a supper, trivia – something for the entire family. On Friday, organizers Deanna Hurley and Bonnie-Lynn Perry prepared for the special nativity-based celebration.

Mayor Paterson looks ahead to 2016

John Paterson couldn’t stop smiling. Grinning from ear-to-ear, the Leamington mayor struggled to find anything negative to say about the past year in Leamington – and expressed nothing but hope and promise for the coming year.

Of course funding is always an issue, but Paterson is optimistic about the future of the municipality that was more or less written off just a few short years ago with the closure of the H.J. Heinz company. But the future looks bright, and Paterson is excited about what 2016 will bring for the residents of Leamington.

One of the improvements expected in the coming year is courtesy of a very generous resident, one who has stepped up in recent years to make life better in the municipality he calls home.

Mike Schlater has become known in the municipality as the man who is funding the future for dozens of Queen of Peace alumna who are currently attending Cardinal Carter Secondary School. A man who has thrown his financial support behind dozens of local fundraisers, offered up free pizza for an entire school on a regular basis as a fundraiser for the school, pledged a substantial amount of money for the construction of the new St. Michael’s Church, donated a $250,000 lottery win to Cardinal Carter, and handed out Domino’s Pizza coupons to virtual strangers on the street.

Paterson is more than happy that Schlater put down roots here after an extensive search across the country several years ago.

His latest philanthropic deed was indeed a boon for the municipality –one that came out of the blue. Paterson said Schlater has pledged $100,000 a year for the next 10 years, benefitting the soccer complex in the year to come.

Paterson said following the upgrades to the fieldhouse, concession stand

and washroom facilities, the complex will be set to host soccer tournaments.

The mayor counts his blessings for residents like Schlater. But his gift has been just one of many highlights for 2015.

Paterson said a controversial decision made by Council in recent years is paying off in spades.

The decision to waive development fees was criticized by many but Paterson said that decision has meant a real boon for the municipality – an increase of about $25 million in construction starts.

Charges laid after 3-vehicle crash

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were called to a three-vehicle collision on Friday, Dec. 18 around 11:10 a.m. on Talbot St. W., just east of Essex County Rd. 31 in Leamington.

Leamington Fire Service and Essex Windsor Emergency Medical Service (EMS) attended the scene. No one was injured in the crash.

Police determined that the driver of a blue Ford caused a chain reaction collision and exhibited signs of impairment at the scene.

A 23-year-old Leamington man was arrested and taken to jail where he proceeded to cause mischief to the cells while he was lodged.

The man was charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle, exceeding 80 mg Blood Alcohol Content as well as mischief under $5,000. He appears in a Leamington court in January.

“The building stats after waiving the development charges are mind blowing,” said the mayor, “especially in the industrial and institutional sectors.”

But it’s not just construction that’s way up in Leamington, Paterson said in the last 12 months 388 new manufacturing jobs have opened up.

“Things are looking really, really good,” said a beaming Paterson.

Another major project that Paterson is excited about is the waterfront development and improvements to Seacliff Park.

The municipality has purchased some waterfront properties and is looking to purchase a few more to turn the waterfront into a destination for tourists, as well as local residents. Drawings presented to Council in October featured a paved beach walkway, upgraded beach volleyball courts, an amphitheatre, a bike path, a restaurant and a wine and coffee bar.

Paterson said this project has not only piqued the interest of area residents, it has also garnered the attention of the Ministry of Tourism. After presenting their vision of the future of the waterfront to a tourism dragon’s den of sorts, the mayor said they were contacted by Ministry of Tourism the next day.

While that particular project is one that has drawn much excitement, other more mundane projects are also on the agenda – two major sewer lines are expected to give local industries the opportunity for further expansion.

“We are heading in a very good direction,” said Paterson. He said they are also working with the stakeholders of the uptown core and have requested an artist’s renderings “to make it a more positive atmosphere in the future”.

Within the walls of the municipal building itself, Paterson said there has been a tremendous turnover, with several retirements taking place. While it was a year of transition, Paterson said the new team has been working tirelessly to ensure it has gone smoothly.

Paterson said it has become clear that additional bodies are needed to accomplish their goals. Ideally, the mayor said, they would like to hire four additional personnel to help ease the workload on the current staff.

But there was one rather major loss the municipality experienced in April – the sudden death of Councillor Rick Atkin.

Atkin was a well-liked, knowledgeable and experienced member of Council, who was always prepared and had no personal agendas, said Paterson. He said Atkin always voted his conscience and his votes reflected what he thought was best for the community. Paterson said he is missed around the table.

Highbury offers gift to Salvation Army

A combined contribution from Highbury Canco’s employees and ownership to the Leamington Salvation Army is the latest gesture that will make the holiday season brighter for several local residents.

The second annual Di’s Café Christmas Dinner at the local food processing plant was greeted with $1,553.95 in employee donations, a sum that was matched by the company for a total contribution of $3,107.90 — the largest offered to the Leamington Salvation Army so far this year.

“It’s all about giving hope — not just at Christmas time, but through the whole year. This donation makes that possible,” said Leamington Salvation Army captain Corey Vincent upon receiving the latest Highbury Canco donation Wednesday, Dec. 16. “I offer a huge ‘thank you’ to the employees and the company.”

Vincent explained that the Highbury donation will go toward the Salvation Ar-

my’s yearly Family Services budget, including its Christmas Campaign, emergency disaster services, Christmas hampers and finding accommodations for the region’s homeless. The fundraising Highbury employee dinner was the second annual edition. The first raised about $2,200 with the combined collection of employee donations and corporate match.

The idea to run a charitable employee dinner was presented to the company last year by Diana Carey, who runs Highbury’s canteen. Carey was again the main organizer of the event this year, assisted by her kitchen staff of three fellow workers and Frank Uzen, who spent three consecutive hours carving nine turkeys — before it was discovered that an additional three birds would be needed to feed the 200-plus participating employees. The meal was offered free of charge to the establishment’s workers, who were only asked to make donations for the local Salvation Army.

Temporary storage requested

On Monday evening, Dec. 21, Municipal Council agreed to schedule a public meeting to gauge public reaction to a proposal to permit temporary storage for three years on the Canadian Tire property. The proposal is to use up to eleven transport trailers for the storage.

Speaking against the request, Councillor John Jacobs pointed out that this is not the first time that there has been a use of trailers. There have been complaints in the past, and he feels that three years is not a reasonable length of time to find a solution.

Deputy-Mayor Hilda MacDonald stated that eleven trailers is excessive, and if they have that much stock being stored in trailers, they should rent warehouse space.

Councillor Tim Wilkinson pointed out that there is no alternative proposed to end the use of trailers, so insisting on a one-year term allows Council to see what progress is made. It was decided to hold a public meeting with the request for a one-year temporary use.

St. Michael’s Parish

Schedule

In 2014, the company agreed when asked to make a match donation to the funds raised by employees. This year, immediately after Carey asked for permission to run the same event for 2015, Highbury’s corporate entity offered the match contribution.

“Last year I just thought it would be nice to do something for both the workers and charity — something to help ease the transition from Heinz,” Carey explained.

“Diana and Frank deserve the credit along with all the other employees,” added Highbury Canco president and CEO Sam Diab. “It’s a great reflection of the employees giving back to their community. Giving to the less fortunate is a very generous gesture. We’re very proud of them.”

Carey and her team began preparing for the Thursday, Dec. 10 meal each day from the previous Saturday until Wednesday, Dec. 9. Support for the meal was provided by Mastronardi Produce, which gave vegetables to fill veggie trays.

Vincent explained that this year’s Highbury Canco donation will compliment the ongoing Christmas Kettle Campaign, which runs at various locations across

Leamington, Kingsville and Pelee Island until noon Dec. 24. Thus far, Kettle donations have included a cheque of $1,000 and another of $2,000 from different individuals. Three $500 cheques have also made their way into local kettles. The Leamington Salvation Army’s Kettle Campaign goal is $100,000.

“There are a lot of generous people here in Leamington,” Vincent said, noting that all local donations will remain in the Leamington area.

Our Christmas dream team

Christmas is only a couple of days away. Sitting and listening to the palm branches sway through the open front door simply doesn’t fit into any of my dreams of a white Christmas.

An apocalyptic couple of weeks has put a wringer on our energy and a dint in the essential oil pack! Knowing that you enjoy our escapades is one reason I regret not writing, the other reason is that putting these experiences into written words is also therapy for me.

Our chef and stewards were booked to arrive on an incoming flight December 5, along with all of our December provisions. Blustery weather overruled and sent us into a slight tailspin; better us than the plane, I guess!

the most difficult things I have ever had to do. There are a lot of blanks to fill in, but bottom line is that in the future we need to ‘check our baggage very carefully at the door.’

So, on Dec. 8 we lost a chef and our stewards had yet to arrive. Mark and I were both forced into full service over and above our usual responsibilities. Thank goodness for Violet, our housekeeper, and both Cruz’s and Engine’s wives who were more than willing to help.

It was one of those moments that made us appreciate having communication and great hired help. People we have never met went into action and took care of things on the other end. The provisions we ordered (all 50 boxes) needed to find a home and preferably a cool one. This staff of strangers unpacked and stored all perishables in a cooler prior to heading home to await word regarding the next flight out.

Fortunately, there was a window of flight time that enabled our owners, their guests and the chef to fly to the island along with some of the provisions. The remaining food and two stewardesses patiently waited it out in Lauderdale until they were given the word that it was safe to fly.

HELP! When in need reach out to what or whom you know, and with this in mind I swiftly emailed Chef Phillip from Toronto. Phillip was our chef last year over New Year’s. Although he has given up his culinary career for a job in real estate, he welcomed the challenge and was willing to return to Little Whale Cay. How lucky am I? Within a day, we confirmed that he would arrive the following Saturday. In kitchen terms, this meant I only needed to be head chef for several breakfasts, 5 lunches and 4 dinners.

Meanwhile, the chef and I worked hard to make sure that our guests were well cared for. Mark kept us stocked with gas and water in between replacing an entire tennis court fence. It didn’t take long for me to have worries about the stability of our chef. Although he was a very likeable gentleman, the kitchen was chaotic. He was obviously very nervous. One evening in particular, I was hesitant to carry the plate of food out to our guests. I have seen innumerable beautiful plates leave the kitchen and I knew that the one I had in my hand was not one of them! On day two, I believed that the dessert was literally ‘the icing on the cake’… or not! As I carried this disaster toward the dining room my heart sank for both of us!

Thankfully, the stewards and the rest of our provisions finally arrived 2 days after the chef left. Sara miraculously returned after the Russian charter, and accompanied by her friend Colette they both swung into action. Check out the pictures that I have shared on Facebook and you will see them spray painting shells and sea fans for our New Year’s Eve celebration. They both easily balance working hard and enjoying the island very well!

After a sleepless night I awakened the next day with the gut feeling that things were not right. The existing problem was not going to work out either for our six guests or the chef. No way was this man capable of making it through the month! Something was very wrong. The month ahead of us included Christmas and was topped off by a one-week charter with 18 guests. This challenge was not for the lighthearted!

Chef Phillip has arrived, and I admit my energy levels suddenly swagged more than the garland hung outside when I realized we had a team to take over. Our returning New Year’s charter has requested a few extras this year, including a sous chef and a third steward. Our most recent chef experience encouraged us to reach out to the known instead of the unknown. An I-message to Chef Laila confirmed her commitment to return as sous chef. She was originally from Kingsville and is now living on Salt Spring Island, BC, and happens to be the daughter of a fellow Wheatleyite. Our daughter Anna will be the third stewardess!

Shortly after breakfast that morning our employer confirmed what I already knew. Immediately after speaking with her I met with the chef to break the news that he would be leaving on the next flight 2 hours later. It was one of

Our ‘dream team’ is presently working diligently every day to make sure the owners of the island are well looked after. Each meal is better than the last, and I am very excited to see what exciting vegan specialties Laila will add. Both Anna’s creative and work skills will not go unnoticed. The snow isn’t falling outside, but all I know is that having people around you who choose to be part of your team make it seem really cozy inside! Merry Christmas!

Ho Ho Ho, where’d 2015 go?

Well, that time is upon us once again.

As we get older, apparently, the years just fly by. It seems like just yesterday when I was pulling my stocking down from the wall at our Point Pelee home and pulling out jacks, nuts, fruit and some hard candy.

The evolution of the Christmas stocking is amazing when you think of it. People are stuffing stockings with hundreds of dollars worth of stuff now.

this column for a while, you know that I was overseeing a ton of newspaper delivery in the city.

One of the biggest things of the year was the announcement by some health organization that bacon, sausage and smoked meats were as bad for you as cigarettes.

I was always just thrilled if I got more Brazil nuts than walnuts. As I reached adulthood, my kids’ stockings were filled with similar things when they were young, and then progressed, along with everyone else, to magazines, toiletries and video games. Seems everyone gets caught up in that.

I resisted the urge to take up smoking at that point. And to tell the truth, I’ve cut down on my bacon consumption just a tad. I guess they can compare it to a smoker cutting back from a pack a day to half a pack.

I don’t know, but it seems that every year they come out with something that is bad for you.

We finally stopped doing stockings a couple of years ago, but now with the grandkids here, we may have to resume the tradition just for them.

Beckett and Bradley are both a year old now, and have each experienced trying to sit on Santa’s knee. Both of them cried and I suspect they may next year too. After that, they’ll be running to the big guy with smiles on their faces.

These kids are the apple of my eye and of several other eyes on both sides of the family.

Last year at this time, I was excited yet apprehensive about being a new grandparent, but watching them grow into these little people with personalities has been the most satisfying year for us in a long time.

While 2015 wasn’t perfect, we managed to get through it and these little Ribbles played a major role in that.

Looking back on the year that was, I can be grateful for a lot of things.

Especially grateful that Jim and Sheila and the gang took me in off the streets of Windsor in May and gave me this job opportunity. I’m forever grateful for that.

Not that I was homeless, but if you’ve been following

I suppose next, the lawmakers will deem that you can’t eat bacon or pepperonis while in a car with children. Funny, the Europeans eat a lot of smoked and cured meat throughout their lives and they seem to be okay.

I remember as a teenager, our neighbours, the Borges family, had a cement block shed in their back yard where they would hang hams and all sorts of meat and then light a small fire in a kettle and let the smoke do its thing. As far as I know, they are all still kicking.

Elections provided us with lots of fodder. We can now buy beer at the grocery store, but only if you want a sixpack. And Mr. Trudeau seems ready to follow through on his promise and make pot legal. Not being a pot smoker, I’m not sure how that will work out but I trust everyone will be happy and mellowed out about it. Dorito sales will certainly skyrocket. I’ve already bought stocks.

So as 2015 comes to a close, I’ll grab some kielbasa in one hand and a grandchild in the other, sit back in my chair with my grocery store beer and ring in the new year. I wish you all a Merry Christmas and hope you keep reading into the new year.

New drone users encouraged to learn the rules before flying

Drones, also known as unmanned air vehicles, are sure to be a popular gift this holiday season. With ownership comes great responsibility, and new operators must learn how to fly safely and legally. This holiday season, Transport Canada encourages all new drone users to consult the wide variety of educational tools available on www.tc.gc. ca/SafetyFirst.

Recreational drone operators should:

• Fly their drone during daylight and in good weather (not in clouds or fog).

• Keep their drone in sight, where they can see it with their own eyes – not just through an on-board camera, monitor or smartphone.

• Make sure their drone is safe for flight before take-off. Check if the batteries are fully charged and if it is too cold to fly.

• Respect the privacy of others. Avoid flying over private property or taking photos or videos without permission.

Recreational drone operators should not fly:

• Closer than 9 km from any airport or heliport.

• Higher than 90 metres above the ground.

• Closer than 150 metres from people, animals, buildings, structures, or vehicles.

• In populated areas or near large groups of people, including sporting events, concerts, festivals, and firework shows.

• Near moving vehicles, highways, bridges, busy streets or anywhere they could endanger or distract drivers.

• Anywhere they may interfere with first responders

All drone operators, regardless of the size of the device or how it will be used, are expected to fly safely and legally. Everyone must respect the Canadian Aviation Regulations, the Criminal Code, and all provincial, territorial and municipal laws governing areas such as privacy and trespassing.

People who operate drones for the fun of flying (recreational use) do not require a Special Flight Operations Certificate (SFOC) from Transport Canada unless the drone weighs more than 35 kg.

Anyone who operates a drone in a reckless and negligent manner; violates controlled or restricted airspace; or endangers the safety of manned aircraft could face fines of up to $25,000 and/or prison.

Arrested for theft

On November 21, shortly after 8:00 p.m., a man attempted to leave a Chatham Canadian Tire store with a television via a back room fire exit. When an alarm sounded, the man dropped the TV, grabbed two socket sets and fled the store. The items are valued at $299 each.

The man was identified and a warrant for his arrest was issued for the offences of theft under $5,000 and possession of property obtained by a crime under $5,000.

On Dec. 9 the 27-year-old Leamington man was apprehended in Windsor and transported back to Chatham-Kent. He was released with conditions pending a Dec. 29 court date.

Farm lot to relocate

A four and a half acre farm lot that was created in 2003 for a potato grading station has been manufacturing for some years, and would now like to have the appropriate zoning. Under the Official Plan and the zoning by-law, manufacturing has never been an allowed use for this property. In a detailed report to Council Monday night, Dec. 21, a number of alternatives were outlined, but the administrative conclusion is that the application should be denied. Council endorsed the recommendation but realising that this is a viable business, is giving the applicant sufficient time to relocate the business to an appropriately zoned location.

Top ticket sellers included Spencer Rodrigues, Ally DiMenna, Samantha Vreman, Alyssa Orlando and Brooklyn Sarkis. This year, the school raised $21,375 — the highest annual amount since the fundraiser began in 2011. To date, $87,260.16 has been raised for students through graduation awards, retreats, excursions and after-school taxi expenses for extra-curricular activities including sports, drama and the arts. This year’s lottery campaign began Nov. 5 and ended with the draw Dec. 4.

Van Kesteren elected to serve as Ontario Caucus chair

Last week, Chatham-Kent Leamington MP Dave Van Kesteren was elected to serve as chair of the Ontario Conservative Caucus. In this role, Van Kesteren will be responsible for conducting weekly caucus meetings with Conservative Members of Parliament from Ontario to discuss issues that affect the province. “It is an honour to be voted into this position by my Ontario colleagues,” said Van Kesteren. “I look forward to working with these men and women who are committed to holding the Liberal government to account and ensuring it provides the entire region with policies that facilitate economic growth and protect taxpayer money.”

Van Kesteren will begin in this new role when Parliament resumes in January.

Fire training report presented to Council

Back in 2011 the City and County (and all county municipalities) agreed to commission a study investigating the most cost-efficient way of delivering high-quality training to the fire personnel throughout the area.

A report made to Council Monday evening, Dec. 21 stated: “The lack of a nearby facility to provide live fire training is a major and immediate challenge facing all municipalities in Essex County and Windsor. (Across the region, recruits alone account for 30-35 new volunteer recruits on average per year and 15-20 Career Fire fighters annually).”

The report is complete and ready for discussion at the administrative level. Municipal Council has been asked to formally receive the report and to refer the matter back to the committee of CAOs and Fire Chiefs to “establish a work plan and develop recommendations to implement the short term goals as set out in the Feasibility Study.”

The matter was carried unanimously without discussion.

Jan Watson retiring from Wheatley Journal after 43 years...

Jan Watson of The Wheatley Journal was recently presented with a Silver Quill Award from the Canadian Community Newspapers Association.

The Silver Quill is awarded to employees who have worked in the community newspaper business for 25 or more years. The next level for this award is the Gold Quill, which is awarded for 50 years of service. Although Jan received the Silver Quill she has worked at the Wheatley Journal for 43 years. Jan will be retiring at the end of this year.

Jan Watson started her career at the Wheatley Journal in 1972. She was hired by Rick Epplett who had been running the weekly community newspaper of Wheatley since the late 1960s with his father Ken Epplett. Jan, daughter of fish boat captain Ray Getty (Alex B and George H), started her working career at age 12 as a net stringer. She attended Fanshawe College to become a legal secretary. She worked in a lawyer’s office for a short time, but left to start her family with husband Jon Watson. Kristy was born in 1972, followed by Scott in ’74 and Brooke in ’79.

Jan found another venue for her typing skills, which was at the Wheatley Journal office. Here she worked in all departments from reporting to accounts payable/receivable and of course typesetting. In 1972 newspapers were shooting black and white film and developing their own prints for layout. And that was another big job for Jan – the layout of the paper. A far cry from the first few weeks when she was used as a collater for big print jobs. Her skills soon surfaced as she crept into every department including setting ads.

With Ken still operating the Heidelberg press from morning to night and Rick working on commercial print and advertising jobs, Jan was left to “cut and paste” together the weekly newspaper.

“I’ve seen so many changes in 40 plus years, from laying out type to doing everything on a computer,” said Jan. “A lot of it was trial and error, you had to teach yourself. I went from manual ledgers to Simply Accounting on the computer.”

Jan says times have changed and so have people. She hardly had to send out notices, people just knew when to come in and pay for their Journal.

Any weekly newspaper relies on its local Post Office and the Journal has always had a great relationship with the local staff. In the past few years there have been many delivery issues – NOT with the local staff, but with corporate decisions. Every time a Post Office closes somewhere else, our delivery seems to get slower in the distant areas. “We’ve lost longtime subscribers because of poor delivery, which is too bad. We’ve fought to keep our numbers up and slow delivery doesn’t help us at all,” said Jan.

To say Jan was dedicated to the newspaper and her community is an understatement. Most years she had one week’s holidays and can count all her sick days with one hand. “You had to be dedicated and you had to really like what you do and who you work for and I did,” said Jan.

“There’s no doubt Jan has kept this paper together for decades. I can’t even imagine the changes she has worked through,” said Heyens.

“Jan deserves the time off to enjoy her family and friends. No more weekly deadlines and publishing headaches for her. She says she’ll miss the people the most, which is completely understandable. I think she knows everyone’s renewal date by heart along wih their post office box number,” said McBrayne.

Jan plans to spend a lot more time at her cottage-like home located on the lakeside of Detroit Line. The large waterfront property boasts many flowerbeds and plenty of gardening (and mulching) to keep her busy.

School assignment at Flyers game

The Adult Education night school class had a special assignment on Thursday, December 3. The students and their instructor Brandon Driscoll attended the Leamington Flyers home game and then wrote a report as a class project. The best article was selected to be printed in the Southpoint Sun. Here is the submission of Carissa Hope.

Flyers beat London 5-2

Tonight the Leamington Flyers are adding their latest player, Aaron Langlois, a 20-year-old former baseball player. Aaron is a strong young man who is just getting back to sports after having surgery from injuring his collateral ligament in his elbow, which he had injured while playing baseball for the Saginaw Valley University in Michigan. Fifteen months later and this guy is ready to get back into the game. Welcome to the team Aaron Langlois!

The first period was off to a great start when Emerson scored the first goal. Soon after Amante scored his first goal of the night and then came Hoyan with lucky number three. During the second period there was a small delay due to a piece of glass breaking but that didn’t slow anyone down as the beginning of the third period, London came back to score their first goal. Not long after Elliott, a Leamington player, came through and scored their fourth goal of the night making the score 4-1. London scored their second goal and Leamington ended the scoring with a fifth and final goal by Amante. Final score was 5-2.

December 3 was also the annual Toys for Tots game where all the guests bring a teddy bear or stuffed animal and throw it onto the ice and all the toys are donated to families in the local community. This is a great way for not only a town to come together for a great game, but also for a great cause.

Six of the turkeys were donated by Superstore employees, each of whom is given a free Grade A turkey during the holidays and given the option of donating it to the local food bank. The other 12 were donated by customers, who receive a free turkey after spending $225 or more in a single trip to the store. Fixings including vegetables, potatoes, gravy and stuffing were also donated by the store itself, which also made contributions to the Salvation Army through a portion of donations dropped off during its Saturday, Dec. 5 Help Us Stuff The Bus charity event. Lea thanked the community for its support, which included nine skids full of products for the local food bank.

back home after 47 years

Elliot Boyuk of Wellandport was only 5 years old on August 24, 1957, when his parents purchased a 1940 Chevrolet Master 85 four-door sedan. Elliot’s sister Julia was only 2. Their car when new had an Oshawa factory list price of $1019. The engine was an overhead-valve six with 216 cubic inches and 85 horsepower.

Elliot still remembers the day his parents brought the car home: “Our first ride in the Chevy was not a smooth one. When my dad applied the brakes at the end of our driveway, they grabbed very hard and Julia fell right off the seat.” The car had a few “mechanical woes” but that did not prevent the family from seeing some of the “U.S.A. in their Chevrolet,” including a trip to the Buffalo Zoo, where Elliot still recalls the sight of animals the size of elephants and giraffes.

In 1960, Elliot’s dad sold the Chevy to a co-worker, John Swaze. “Mr. Swaze used it as a second car, taught his kids to drive in it and chased his cows home from the field in it! After a few years of this, it was parked in their barn and forgotten.”

In 2007, and 47 years after his dad sold it, that old Chevy came back into Elliot’s life: “While driving by the Swaze farm, I noticed the Chevy had been dragged out of the barn and into the field. I pulled in and talked to Bruce, John Swaze’s son. Bruce said he was considering selling it for scrap. Unable to bear that thought, I purchased the car. To my surprise, it came with the original handwritten bill of sale my father had penned back on June 25, 1960.”

Elliot brought the car back home to the family farm where he grew up and still lives today. At first, he wasn’t sure what to do with it, then he decided to restore it, but he knew this would not be easy. Most of the lower body was badly rusted, but after 3 years and countless hours, it was close to being roadworthy.

“I’m pleased to be able to say that I completed all aspects of the restoration myself, including removing the body from the frame, and even repairing the rustedout areas of the frame with solid metal.”

The finishing touch was a set of wide whitewalls. And now when Elliot and Julia take it for a drive, they can sing that Willie Nelson song: “On the road again!”

LDSS can drive another success

With several numbers to calculate, the Leamington District Secondary School’s annual Leamington-Mersea Goodfellows Can Drive has once again added up to a brighter Christmas season for the community’s less fortunate.

Now 40 years in the making, this year’s event took place Friday, Dec. 11 and once again utilized the warehouse of Westmoreland Sales on Industrial Drive as both the can drive and Goodfellows Christmas Basket headquarters. Once final numbers were added up late that afternoon, it was declared that the girls’ team had recaptured the drive’s title and trophy.

“We couldn’t do it without them,” said Leamington-Mersea Goodfellows member and volunteer Bill Slater. “It’s amazing to see the enthusiasm from students to be involved in their community. It’s mind boggling.”

This year, the team of LDSS Grade 12 boys collected 5,239 cans and other non-perishable food items — 16 shy of the 5,255 brought in by the girls’ team. What set the teams apart this year were the cash donations submitted. The boys gathered $2,970.75 while the girls came forward with $8,376.49. Using the previous calculation method of three cans per dollar, the combined, school-day-long effort this year translated to 44,536 items. The sum surpassed last year’s collection by roughly 8,000 items. Money raised by the LDSS group will be spent on additional food basket items at local grocery stores.

The boys won the 2014 drive, snapping a three-year winning streak by the girls.

This year’s drive included the assistance of about 35 volunteers, including several retired LDSS teachers. The idea for the annual LDSS event first came to light in the mid 1970s when teachers Chuck Ives, Bob Lee and Jake Unger — during a routine visit to the Wheatley Royal Canadian Legion following a weekly rec league hockey game — discussed the possibility of students getting involved with a large-scale charitable food drive. The ‘boys versus girls’ incentive was bolstered from the beginning with a trophy created by welding teacher Steve Mitro.

This year’s drive began with an 8:30 a.m. pep talk by LDSS teacher Dan Braun before participating students were dispersed to local farms, greenhouses and other businesses in search of collections.

“It’s been great,” said Ives, who continues to volunteer for each year’s event. “The kids love it. There’s always a lot of talk about the can drive as a highlight of the year.”

On the following Monday, Goodfellows volunteers set up 900 baskets in the Westmoreland Sales warehouse, owned by Topline Produce. One day later, students from UMEI and LDSS filled each basket in preparation of delivery for Saturday, Dec. 19. Last year, 800 baskets were delivered to homes around the Leamington area from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. This year’s baskets are going to 200 families — 168 will receive four bushel baskets and a turkey while 32 others will be given seven bushel baskets and a turkey. The number of baskets received is based on each family’s size.

Lions ‘clip’ Kennedy

When the Leamington Lions boys hockey team wins, it wins big.

The Leamington District Secondary School team improved to a .500 record Wednesday, Dec. 16 after defeating the visiting Kennedy Clippers 9-1 at Highbury Canco Arena. After starting the season with a 10-2 home-ice win over the Herman Green Griffins, the Lions ran into some tougher opposition with a 1-1 draw and 2-1 loss against Lajeunesse and a 2-1 loss against the Harrow Hawks.

For its fifth game of the regular season, Leamington tested Clippers goalkeeper Leif Eriksson early and often. The netminder made a series of big saves to start the game, but non-stop pressure from Lion forwards soon allowed the hosts to find the back of the goal on a frequent basis.

Dawson Iles started the scoring with a slap shot that was released just after a Kennedy minor penalty — the only infraction of the game — came to an end. Eriksson got a piece of the shot, but was unable to stop it from bouncing over the goal line. Brett Enns earned the only assist. From in front of the crease, Jeron Kir backhanded an ice-level shot into the goal after being set up by Quinten Adams and Josh Koning.

A two-on-one attack translated into a marker for Mason Gow, who took a feed from Noah Santos before burying a waist-high wrist shot. The Lions struck again 11 seconds later, when Kir fired a quick wrist shot that sent the puck bouncing off the left post and then crossbar before hitting the mesh. Jesse Fast was credited with the lone assist. Without much space to work with, Enns sent a backhand shot from the crease past Eriksson after being set up by Iles and Evan Loveless.

Leamington’s offense scaled the pressure back a bit starting late in the first stanza, although it continued to keep the puck in Kennedy territory for the majority of the contest. From a sharp angle, Santos took a rebound from a shot by Fast and quickly sent it past the Clippers’ netminder for a 6-0 lead. Gow earned the other assist.

With 46 seconds on the clock, Fast backhanded his own rebound into the goal from close range to finish scoring for the second period.

The third frame was played entirely in running time, although the Lions still managed to add a couple more before Kennedy spoiled Matt Ciliska’s shutout bid. Jack Towle made it 8-0 after going from the backhand to forehand before releasing a successful ice-level shot from inside the crease after taking helpers from Santos and Thomas. With just under nine minutes to go, Tristen Totaro potted a low wrist shot into the left side during another twoon-one break. Adams and Loveless assisted.

Josh Ewanski put Kennedy on the board with 4:58 on the clock by tapping home his own rebound with heavy traffic in the Lions’ crease.

Leamington outshot the Clippers 34-5 during its penaltyfree performance.

“They’re a team that’s lost a lot of leadership from last season,” LDSS coach Butch Rickeard said of the Clippers. “They’re rebuilding. Our guys played a disciplined game defensively. In games like this, we try to focus on the defensive zone and stay disciplined. We wanted newer guys to get on the score sheet, and that’s what they did.”

Twenty-four hours later, the Lions hosted the Riverside Rebels, who also defeated Kennedy 9-1 earlier in the season. Leamington came out on top of the Dec. 17 contest

- Jeron Kir of the Lions circles the back of the Kennedy net while the Clippers’ Andrew Black closes in during a WECSSAA boys hockey match at Highbury Canco Arena Wednesday, Dec. 16. Kir scored two goals — including the game winner — in a 9-1 final favouring Leamington.

with an 8-0 victory, with Riley Fast earning the shutout. The Lions’ goals were provided by Quinn Bowman, Iles and Adams with two apiece and Spence Wiebe and Towle with singles. Kir led in the assist department with three while Enns and Loveless chipped in with two each and Ryan Wall and Dawson Wigle added one apiece.

Despite being only one game above .500 (3-2-1), the Lions have outscored their opponents 30-8. Leamington’s next home game will be played Wednesday, Jan. 20 against Riverside, starting at 3 p.m.

All I want for Christmas

It looks like I’ve long since reached the age where when someone asks “what do you want for Christmas?” I can’t think of an answer. I’d love it if Santa left a 500 horsepower, pump-gas Oldsmobile 455 cubic inch big block V8 with aluminum Edelbrock heads and a Holley double pumper carb under the tree for the Cutlass or a full-frame, cutting edge DSLR camera with outstanding low-light performance so I can stop drawing the ire of high school volleyball refs with the flash, but neither of those things are terribly realistic.

With that in mind, I might as well ask Old St. Nick for another list of unreasonable requests as a sports fan. So, here goes.

It would be great if the jolly old elf sat down with the presidents and commissioners of organized hockey leagues around the world and stressed the importance of clamping down on some really irritating on-ice tactics. Sure, the allout elimination of checking from behind and head checks would be great, but even the little stuff has tested my patience as of late. For one, I’d love to see more penalties called on goaltenders who “accidentally” knock their nets off the goal line when the opposing team is threatening to score. It’s become nearly pandemic with some teams and some of these crafty ‘keepers are pretty good at making it look like a mistake. They’ll slide across the crease to following the shifting direction of a puck carrier, and “oops” — their leg collides with a post and the net pops off its moorings. “Time to whistle the play dead, Mr. Referee!”

IMESON

Custom Grain Haulers & Float Service

We don’t have to give the penalty some fancy, long-winded, multi-hyphenated name. Adding it to the list of actions that fall under the old-fashioned Delay of Game title would suffice. This clampdown of course would be administered whether it’s intentional or not. No referee lets a high sticking call slide because it was an accident, and for good reason. And let’s not focus strictly on goalies — I’ve seen more than one defenseman or centre do the same thing. Exceptions of course would apply to goalies who are pushed into their own net by an overtly rambunctious forward from the opposing team.

Oh, and if Santa could leave a message with all hockey coaches who seem to think arena glass can double as a dry erase board, that would be great too. I’ve seen it on the glass of more than one rink — a marker-drawn sketch of the end of a playing surface complete with net, goal line, faceoff circles, hash marks, crease and blue line. Perhaps Santa could deliver each one of these coaches a clipboard with the rink surface (and all its lines) that has a dry-erase surface with little suction cups on the other side. They could just pop it onto the glass, scribble an ‘X’ or ‘O’ for each player and when they’re done, just pop the board off the glass and voila, no harm done. Maybe I should take that idea to Dragon’s Den or Shark Tank — I’m sure Mr. Wonderful would love it.

Getting what seems to be even more unrealistic, I’d like the Habs to stop losing all the time. As I write these words, they’ve lost six of their last seven. Sure, the list within the list would include the immediate return of Price between the pipes. Oh, and if rumours about Stamkos being traded to Montreal came to fruition, that would be fantastic (albeit the most unlikely turn of events in this entire column).

Coach Michel Therrien was eerily cool-headed following the shutout loss to Los Angeles, which could very well be the calm before the storm. I expect the parade of players to St. John’s (almost typed “Hamilton”) to start any minute now. Some might say it’s not yet time to push the panic button. I disagree. The time has come to jump up and down maniacally on said button until it triggers every alarm and flashing red light possible. Dropping six of seven may be commonplace in Toronto, Buffalo, Edmonton or Columbus, but we’re talking about Montreal — absolutely NOT acceptable. Habs fans are not “glass half full” types. Sure, the Canadiens are still first in their division. But, when you look under the “L10” (Last 10) column, they’re the WORST in the entire conference, at least as of Dec. 18.

At the same time at least, the Ducks and Leafs are tied for last place. I guess I can take a bit of comfort in that, although I’m not 100 per cent confident the Habs could beat

Then Alessia West scooped up the puck to score a breakaway goal. Bailey’s was playing well defensively and kept the puck out of their zone. Raegan Woodiwiss scored the fourth and final goal for Bailey’s.

Evan Gualtieri took another shutout in a 4-0 win for Bailey Atom girls.

Weil’s Atoms fight to the end

Southpoint Weil’s Atoms played in Tilbury on Saturday against Kent Red. They were four players short, including their outstanding goalie, and adjusting to new positions. Kent started off strong and scored 20 seconds into the game. Abel Teichroeb tied up the game for Weil’s with an assist from Alessia West and Adriana West. A minute later, Zander Grilo scored for Weil’s with an assist from Luca Rino and Abel Teichroeb to take the lead. Kent came back to tie it up.

In the second, Kent took a holding penalty and then a tripping penalty. Weil’s capitalized on the power play and Zander Grilo scored another goal with assists going to Luca Rino and Adriana West.

Kent then scored another goal to take the lead. Southpoint’s Luca Rino scored breakaway goal with just a second left in the period to tie the score at 4-4.

Early in the third, Kent scored two more goals. Weil’s Luca Rino and Zander Grilo came back to score two more with assists from Adriana West, Emma Weil and Logan Jardim to tie it up again. As curfew approached, Kent injured two of Weil’s players and then scored the winning goal. Weil’s took a loss of 7-6.

Local Team Goes Undefeated at Detroit Bonspiel

Novice Blue remains undefeated

The Leamington Chrysler Novice Blue team is going into Christmas break with an 8-0 record. They faced the Kent Cobra’s Black team, who was also undefeated, on the Highbury rink and came out with a 7-2 win over Kent.

The entire team did a great job in both ends to ensure the Kent team was kept at bay as they worked hard and never stopped until the game was done. Scoring for team Blue were Nathan Omar (2), Dayne Di Milo, Dylan Marchand, Hayden Epplett (2) and Matteo Pereira .

The team is now on Christmas Break. Their next action will be Jan. 2 when they face Kent Cobra Red at 11 a.m. at Highbury rink.

The Sun Parlour Curling Club’s Grand Masters team won the Seniors Tour Bonspiel on Dec. 12 at the Detroit Curling Club. The Leamington team was the only one to go undefeated. Teams from Windsor, Michigan and Ohio also competed. Congratulations! From left to right are Gary McRae (sparing for Ron Kettle), Lionel Aasen, Lee Penfold and Doug Scott. (Submitted photo)

The Leamington Flyers were no kinder to the playoff-seeking Lambton Shores Predators the second time around in as many weeks.

The Flyers hosted the Preds for the second consecutive home game Thursday, Dec. 17 and pounded their way to an 8-1 victory — leaving Lambton with a scant one-point lead over St. Marys in the race for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference. One week earlier, Leamington sent the Predators home with a 6-1 loss.

The first period was a back-and-fourth affair where both teams managed to maintain control of the puck in the opposition’s zone for a total of several minutes. The Flyers, however, generated far more in the way of quality scoring chances, opening up skating and shooting lanes that Lambton Shores couldn’t find at the other end of the rink. Mark Gangnon opened the scoring with his 11th of the season, unleashing a wrist shot from directly in front of the Preds’ net and about 15 feet from the top of the crease. Mitchell Amante provided the only assist on the goal, scored on the game’s first power play.

The hosts ramped up their forward game in the second period despite registering one less shot than in the first. Connor Merritt put Lambton Shores on the board by tapping an ice level shot into the left corner of the Leamington net with Windsor AAA minor midget Spitfire affiliate goalie Eric Pillon down on the ice. The Flyers completed the player-strength trifecta with their first five-on-five marker of the evening when Luke Sanko tapped the puck over the goal line from inside the crease while being knocked to the ice. Cale Phibbs and Derek Elliott were credited with assists.

Amante earned his second goal and third point of the night by backhanding the rebound of a Matthew Opblinger shot through Hurtubise’s skates at ice level. Scott Emerson drew the second assist. The Flyers outshot the Predators by an even 2:1 margin in the second frame, 20-10.

FLYERS POUND PREDS

The Flyers’ penalty killing unit was effective enough to give Amante the opportunity to test goalie Anthony Hurtubise during a rush from the left of the goal. Hurtubise made the initial pad save, but couldn’t stop Amante from grabbing the rebound and burying it from a sharp angle to give Leamington a 2-0 lead. The Flyers outshot their guests 21-11 through the first 20 minutes.

Leamington’s dominance on the ice became even more pronounced in the third period, where it added another four goals and quintupled the Preds 20-4 on the shot counter. Opblinger registered another shorthanded goal for his team, taking a Luke Sanko pass before tricking the opposing netminder with a quick fake and backhanding a high shot under the crossbar. Zak Parlette also assisted.

Affiliated forward Brett Vorshuk made it 6-1 during a scramble in the Lambton Shores crease, flipping an unseen puck into the mesh from the left side of the goal. Seventy seconds later, Derek El-

liott tapped an ice-level shot over the goal line from in front of the net after being set up by Thomas Virban and Sanko during a power play. J.P. Grineau finished the scoring after Amante found him unguarded in front of the crease. Alone, Grineau didn’t waste the opportunity, flipping a high wrist shot over Hurtubise’s left arm and into the netting. Emerson earned the other assist.

Leamington went two-for-five on the power play while Lambton Shores was effectively held to minus-two for six. The Flyers outshot their guests 61-25.

“We came out a bit slow in the first, and after we started skating harder about half way through the second, things started going our way,” said Flyers coach Anthony Iaquinta. “By the time you’re up 4-1, it seems easier to play — you’re not as worried about making mistakes. When we work hard, we’re a tough team to beat.”

Opblinger, one of five Flyers to finish the night with two points or more, was an effective force on the penalty kill.

“We started skating more and finished our hits in the second period,” he explained. “Me and Mitch (Amante) like being out there on the penalty kill — we try to take advantage of it and not let it become a disadvantage for scoring opportunities.”

The Flyers played their last game of 2015 24 hours later in St. Thomas against the Stars. Leamington won

the game 8-3, with Flyer goals provided by Liam Hogan with two, Virban, Mitchell Crevatin with two in a row, Amante, Elliott and Aaron Langlois with an empty netter. The Flyers registered a shots on net advantage of 38-34 while going one for three on the power play. The Stars were two for three on the man advantage. Tyler Wall earned the win in net for Leamington.

Rest of the West

The LaSalle Vipers edged the Chatham Maroons with a 4-3 regulation victory Wednesday, Dec. 16 while the London Nationals cruised by the St. Marys Lincolns in a 6-1 final. On Friday, the Strathroy Rockets defeated the Lincolns 5-4 in double overtime, followed by a 7-4 Saturday victory for the Nationals against the Vipers and a 3-0 win for the St. Thomas Stars against the Sarnia Legionnaires. Also on Saturday, the Lincolns defeated the Lambton Shores Predators 5-4 in the battle for eighth while Chatham handed a 2-1 double overtime loss to Strathroy. St. Thomas and Chatham played the final game of 2015 in the GOJHL, a match that ended 6-2 favouring the Stars.

Local races join to become series

For running enthusiasts across Leamington, the rest of Essex County and beyond, good things will truly come in threes.

Starting in 2016, three local races — Southern Footprints, the South Shore Spring Sprint and Leamington Triathlon — will converge to become a series. Collectively, the events will be known as the Mucci Three Pac, so named in recognition of the series’ primary sponsor Mucci Pac. Athletes who participate in all three races will receive a special, yet-to-bedetermined award form Kingsville-based Mucci Pac Ltd. regardless of where they rank at the end of their selected division’s race.

The initiative began when Southern Footprints and Leamington Triathlon Weekend corace director Dave Campbell approached Burt Mucci with the proposed strategy as a means of increasing participation numbers for all three races. Mucci, himself an avid competitive runner, was enthusiastic about the idea and the Mucci Three Pac was arranged a short time later.

“Burt’s been very good about supporting our running community. We really appreciate the fact that he wants to support Leamington this way.”

— Dave Campbell

“Burt’s been very good about supporting our running community,” explained Campbell, who also noted that Mucci Pac has its own triathlon team.

“We really appreciate the fact that he wants to support Leamington this way. We don’t know exactly where this is going to lead — we just want to increase the number (of participants) for all three races.”

The three races will continue to be planned and organized independently of one another, with Campbell and Mike Makhlouf serving as co-race directors of Southern Footprints, Sharon Arthurs-Pepper being race director of the South Shore Spring Sprint and Campbell and Ben Balkwill co-race directing the Leamington Triathlon. For 2016, the Point Pelee-based Southern Footprints will take place Sunday, Apr. 17. Its most recent installment was the eighth annual and attracted 314 competitors who chose to run either the 5 km or 10 km courses.

The 2015 South Shore Spring Sprint was the second edition of the race, including a 1 km kids’ sprint and a 5 km adults’ race for runners and walkers. Last year’s SSSS attracted 106 entries, down slightly from the 128 who signed up for the inaugural event in 2014. Next year’s SSSS will take place Saturday, May 28.

The Leamington Triathlon — still referred to as the Tomatoman Triathlon despite a name change — will take place Sunday, June 12 in 2016 to mark its 30th year. A sum of 144 racers took part in the sprint triathlon, duathlon, relay events, swim or first-ever 5 km run last year — also a decrease from 2014. To be eligible for the Mucci Three Pac award, Leamington Triathlon Weekend racers must select one of the Sunday events instead of or in addition to Saturday’s Do A Du, Try A Try or Kids of Steel races based at the Leamington Kinsmen Recreation Complex.

Mucci Pac will advertise and promote the series online in addition to appearing on finish line banners for all three events. Speed Print, which often works alongside Mucci Pac, will also be involved, forming a race team of its own.

“We want to show off the two again and just keep going from there,” said Campbell, who’ll focus on making next year’s Leamington Triathlon Weekend’s 5 km run significantly

larger than the eight-racer group it was in 2015.

Results from each year’s Southern Footprints and South Shore Spring Sprint can be found on the WRACE website while the results from the Leamington Triathlon Weekend can be seen on the Chip Time Results site. Awards for racers who take part in all three races will likely be presented at Freddy’s Restaurant (655 Point Pelee Drive) about two weeks after the Triathlon is completed.

Novice Grey beats Harrow

On Sat. Dec. 19 Southpoint Community Muffler Novice Grey travelled to Harrow to take on the Harrow Rams. This was a pretty evenly contested game. Goalies Seth McMahan for Harrow and Julien Pereira for Southpoint stopped many shots.

Southpoint’s Grant Symons, with an assist from Holden Bailey, scored the only goal of the first period.

In the second, Southpoint’s Tyler Franklin scored two with assists from Owen Pimentel and Seth Janzen. Taylor Insley was able to pop one past the Rams netminder to give Southpoint the lead.

The third period was evenly matched. The Rams found the back of the net 2 more times; however, Southpoint was not giving up and with a team effort Tyler Franklin scored again, assisted by Seth Janzen. When the final buzzer rang, Southpoint had the win at 5-3.

From the Southpoint Novice Grey, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Gillett Bantams defeat

Kent Fusion 7-1

Fri. Dec. 18

in October. The game started off with close play by both sides without many offensive chances either way. Late in the period, with Gillett Sheet Metal defenceman Eric Wright off for tripping, Camron Taouil picked up a loose puck in the neutral zone and evaded all defenders before depositing the puck in the back of the net for a short-handed goal and a 1-0 first-period lead for the home team.

The second period started off with a bang with two early goals. The game’s second goal came from a long stretch pass from Andrew Verhaeghe cross-ice from his own end to a streaking Caeden Hutnik on the right wing. Caeden cut in and potted a nice shot behind the Fusion goaltender. Shortly after, Luke Gabert, stationed in the front of the net, made no mistake when Camron Taouil centered the puck to him with a beautiful pass. Southpoint wasn’t done yet. Again short-handed, Andrew Verhaeghe made a line to the Fusion net and scored on a short side shot.

Kent Fusion finally got on the scoreboard with a goal from Aiden Morris, but Southpoint countered quickly again with a goal from Brock Siddall, assisted by Coleton Ippolitti. The second period ended 5-1 in favour of the home team.

The third period included goals by Coleton Ippolitti and Camron Taouil. Assists were by Camron Taouil, Xander Dault and Jordan Blake.

Tyler Dibbley held the visitors at bay for the rest of the game and the final score ended with a home team 7-1 win.

Sunbrite Peewees roll over Kent Black

Sunbrite Peewees played Kent Black at home. They came out strong and played really well. It was a team effort as Sunbrite with up 4-0 at the end of the first period. Goals were scored by Dawson Collison (2), Jackson Cinicolo and Marcus Stanley, with assists from Corrigan Heinrichs, Evan Ouellette, Matteo Fortuna and Massimo West.

Sunbrite kept the pressure on in the second and only allowed one shot on their net. Towards the end of the period, Wyatt Stewart made a nice pass to Massimo West who popped one in from behind the net.

Sunbrite stayed strong, and early into the third Massimo West took a pass from Marcus Stanley and Matteo Fortuna to score the sixth goal for Sunbrite.

Nick Baeini secured another shutout and Sunbrite took a 6-0 win.

a regular season match at Wheatley Area Arena Saturday, Dec. 19. The Lightning squeaked by for a 1-0 victory.

Sun Stars win 3-1

On Saturday, Dec. 19 the Sun Stars played host to the Lakeshore Lighting and came out on the wrong end of a 1-0 game. Alyee Church played a strong game in net, but the depleted Stars just ran out of gas and couldn’t hold off the Lightning who eventually got one to bulge the twine midway through the third. A great effort by the Stars, but just not enough to weather the storm the Lightning brought.

On Sunday, Dec. 20 the Stars travelled to St. Thomas to take on the Panthers. Again a short bench for the Stars, but this time reinforced with three call-ups from the Southpoint Bantam team who had just played the game prior.

The Panthers got on the board first with a goal midway through the first on a rebound after an extended shift in the Stars’ end.

The Stars replied early in the second when Morgan Brown buried a loose puck into the Panthers net. Mackenzie Wilson drew the lone assist on Morgan’s goal.

After the break the Stars came out strong in the third and scored on the power play to go up 2-1. Kennedy Hodgson directed a shot to the net the produced a rebound and Abbey Resendes was there to bang in the rebound. With time winding down, Morgan Brown scored into the empty net to make the final 3-1. Another strong outing in net for Alyee Church in getting the win.

Busy day ends in win for Sharks

A hectic Saturday ended on a strong note for the Wheatley Omstead Sharks. Wheatley Area Arena was the site of a Sharks alumni game, Southpoint midget girls tilt against the Lakeshore Lightning, Southpoint Minor Hockey Night, prize raffles, the Sharks’ annual cash raffle draw and a popular successful iPad mini chuck-a-puck before Wheatley’s Great Lakes Jr. ‘C’ team posted a 4-1 victory over the visiting Wallaceburg Lakers.

The win snapped a three-game losing streak where the Sharks allowed 29 goals while at the same time bringing Wheatley’s record to 12-14-2-2 to finish the first three quarters of the 2015-16 regular season in sole possession of sixth place.

“We’re confident against teams we know we can compete with,” noted Sharks head coach Dave Wiper. “Our energy was up and there were some timely saves in net. We were working hard in our defensive end and the forechecking was really good. When those things happen, we’re successful.”

The Sharks outshot the last-place Lakers 46-21, including 17-4 in the first period. Scoring began with a power play effort. From directly in front of the net and about eight feet out from the top of the crease, Eric Prudence backhanded a dead-centre ice level shot over the goal line while netminder George Hill was trying to get back to his feet. Brett Bowman and Nick Tavolieri-Essex drew assists. The goal was scored during a five-minute major assessed to the Lakers for a head check that sidelined Evan Mastronardi.

Wallaceburg drew even 44 seconds later when Justin Lindsay took control of the puck from the right side of Eric Morneau’s net. Morneau couldn’t cross the crease in time to prevent Lindsay from snapping the puck into the mesh from near the edge of the crease.

Kristian Brockelbank caught Hill off guard with a quick wrist shot into the top left corner of his net, just beyond his extended glove hand. Prudence and Frankie Ciacelli set up the gamewinning goal, scored with just over five minutes left in the opening frame.

Wheatley’s offensive attack continued to dominate in the second, where Nick Tavolieri-Essex scored his 17th and 18th goals as a Shark. The first was buried on a backhand shot from the face-off circle to the right of the Lakers’ net with Hill down and traffic around him. Bowman and Justin

Pinnsoneault drew the assists. The final tally of the game was scored on a laser of a wrist shot released at the top of the face-off circle, from where Tavolieri-Essex found the top left corner.

Bowman drew his third assist of the night while Cole Butler chipped in with the other.

The Sharks went one for five on the power play while the Lakers were held to zero for four.

“(Assistant coaches) Josh (Carnevale) and Grease (Terry Symons) have been working hard on the forechecking and cycling, and it’s paying off,” said Wiper. “Our goal is to get better with every game until we’re

a hard playoff team to play against.”

Wheatley had little time to savour the victory, as the team headed off to Amherstburg the following evening for a 7 p.m. match against the Admirals. The contest ended in a 3-2 regulation win for the Admirals. Luke Gangnon and Ryan Holzel made it 2-0 after 20 minutes for Amherstburg before Pinsonneault pulled Wheatley to within one during an early second-period power play. Ciacelli and Lucas Raffoul assisted. About 10 minutes after Morneau stopped a Chad Copeland penalty shot, Jack Leafeve — who recently returned following an extensive injury — tied

the game after taking a feed from Bowman.

Dylan Muzzatti netted the game winner for the Admirals with exactly one minute remaining in the second frame. Daniel Tonietto stopped 19 for 21 for Amherstburg while Morneau blocked 22 of 25.

Wheatley’s next game will be at home Monday, December 28 at 7:30 p.m. against the Blenheim Blades.

Christmas cash draw winners were Dave Orshinsky ($1,000), Andrea Symons ($500), Lee Penfold, Katrina Wiper, Sajan Brouwer and Brett Bowman ($250 each).

Santa and Mrs. Claus Pay a Visit

Santa Stuck in the ’50s

On Tuesday, Dec. 15, the Gore Hill Public School Gators presented “Santa Stuck in the ’50s”. This holiday musical tells of Santa’s elves finding a variety of toys from the 1950s in the attic of the workshop, and Santa’s plans to use the toys as gifts for the children of the world. Both performances were standing room only! The performances also featured the

Band.
