Kingsville kicks off holiday season in grand style

INC.

KINGSVILLE – It was a magical weekend in Kingsville, one that marked the beginning of the holiday season for many. Whether it was Santa signaling the start of the Fantasy of Lights Festival with the flip of a switch, the marching bands, floats, beautifully decorated homes or a visit with Santa, there was something for everyone in Kingsville on the weekend. Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 17-18, the annual Kingsville Christmas House Tour gave guests a sneak peek into some of the most beautifully decorated homes in the area. Whether it was a gorgeously decorated, gravity-defying, upside-down Christmas tree, a bed well-suited for dreaming about Christmas, or a grand entry boasting a little glitter and glam, nearly 800 guests toured the homes, giving them some ideas while making many envious of the holiday dÊcor. This year the tour was dedicated to Mary and Joe Leach, the original founders of the event. The tour featured eight local homes and the Faith Reformed Church, decorated in a wide variety of styles for the holiday season. Some were

strictly glam, while others celebrated a good-old fashioned Christmas. Interior designer Joan Balsam-Clark was responsible for decorating three of the homes. She said she was delighted with the response and especially thankful for those local residents willing to open their homes up to allow so many guests to visit. Saturday afternoon, youngsters had a chance to give Santa a heads-up on their Christmas wish lists this year. Nearly 300 youngsters and their families attended this year’s fundraiser, Dinner With Santa, sponsored by Eat Drink and Dine Kingsville. After enjoying a pasta dinner, the youngsters had a chance for an early visit with Santa to pass along their wishes this holiday season. The dinner served as an awesome lead-up to one of Kingsville’s biggest, most well attended parades ever. The weather was perfect for the 14th Annual Santa Claus Parade, featuring dozens of well-lit floats, marching bands, entertainers, and of course, Santa and Mrs. Claus. Thousands lined Main Street and Division Street as the parade made its way to Lakeside Park for the official start (Continued on Page A-8)

Hello Mr. Winter Baby, it’s cold outside. If you have the cold weather blues, you’re in for a jolt. Old man winter has visited a little early in the sun parlour. Even down south near Memphis, Tennessee, they’re as cold as ice. It’s causing all of those folks down there to wipe out with frequency. Before you can say “ice ice baby”, the windshields will be solid and the cars running on empty. The autumn leaves will be blowing in the wind and long gone before we can wake up little Susie. She’s not there, but they say she’s so cold that she wouldn’t notice the difference anyway. With great anticipation, the most wonderful time of the year is fast approaching, whether we want it to or not. A white Christmas may or may not be in the cards this year. We may have had one last Christmas, but my mind is fuzzy on that. It could be a hazy shade of winter, for all we know.

For what it’s worth, the winter only lasts a certain amount of time, and before you know Mark Ribble it, the flowers will bloom and we’ll be well into those summertime blues. Before old Jack Frost and Suzy Snowflake get a hold on us, let’s get through the holly jolly Christmas season and hope for warmer weather like we’re waiting on a friend to arrive. Bundle up folks, it’s here to stay awhile, whether we’re happy about it or not. Time to let it go. Okay, there are 27 song titles hidden in this article. See if you can find them.

Pelee Islander II won’t be operational until spring LEAMINGTON — The Pelee Islander II ferry will not be operational until the spring 2019 season, according to Rick Nicholls, MPP for Chatham-Kent-Leamington. MPP Nicholls has been in frequent contact with Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation, which had planned to introduce the new vessel into service in 2018, but regulatory and safety approvals with Transport Canada have taken longer than anticipated. Transport Canada waived an opportunity to speed up the certification process earlier this fall by declining an invitation to observe an evacuation demonstration to gather a more thorough understanding of the vessel’s design and technologies. “I was quite disappointed to learn that the Pelee Islander II will not be in service this fall,” said MPP Nicholls. “I know how absolutely vital ferry service is to my constituents who live on Pelee Island, but unfortunately, I believe that Transport Canada failed to consider the vessel’s modern design and technological advancements, which has resulted in an unnecessary delay in the approval process.”

letters to the editor Remembrance Day coverage excellent, says reader

Alert employee prevents senior citizen from being victim of a scam Dear Editor, I overheard a conversation last week at the Canada Post counter at Shoppers Drug Mart in Leamington. An elderly lady wanted to purchase a money order for $270 to send to an address in the United States. The postal clerk was asking some questions which the elderly customer hesitantly answered. On the surface one could think the Canada Post worker was perhaps being a little intrusive: Do you know the person to whom you are sending this money? Are you comfortable in sending your money to a stranger in another country? It became clear that the lady was uncomfortable but hesitant to say very much. The postal clerk said that she was concerned and that she didn’t want her (the lady) to lose her money because there were a lot of scams out there, and they targeted senior citizens. The question in this gentle and friendly enquiry, “Why are you sending this money?” gave profile to what was a clear scam. The lady said she had won a lot of money, and that she had to send this money to get the bank to release the money to her. I want to say thank you to this postal clerk for going out of her way to help this senior citizen avoid a scam that would have stolen her money. It takes a skill set that balances the wish to be helpful and at the same time avoid the appearance of being nosey. Thank you to those postal workers who take pride in their job and reach out to help our seniors. They are often our most vulnerable citizens. – Frank R. Hawkins, Leamington

Leamington Fire Service concerned about increase in apartment fires By Bryan Jessop

LEAMINGTON — Three days that included two apartment fires have prompted Leamington Fire Services to deliver one important safety message. Two days after a fire broke out at Sutton Place Apartments on McGaw Street, LFS firefighters were called to Leamington Manor Apartments on Lutsch Street to handle yet another incident. Firefighters responded to the Sutton Place call shortly after 9 p.m. following a fire that broke out within a third floor dwelling. Although there were no serious injuries, one female occupant who suffered minor smoke inhalation was sent to hospital for observation and as a precautionary measure. The affected unit’s kitchen was destroyed while other areas within the same dwelling were also damaged by water and smoke at a total estimate of $175,000. On Thursday, Nov. 15 at about 1:18 p.m., LFS personnel and trucks arrived at Leamington Manor Apartments to address what was suspected as another incident triggered by a cooking accident. The eight ground-floor dwellings were temporarily evacuated, although there were no injuries. The only damage caused was to a door that firefighters “We need to have had to breach in order to access the affected room. tenants understand In response to the two multi-unit dwelling incidents, that they could displace a lot of people and we Leamington Fire Services plans to contact the commudon’t want to see that nity’s apartment complex owners to arrange in-person happen — especially meetings with tenants to discuss proper fire prevention this time of year.” practices. Neighbours need to know about housing project, says Council By Mike Thibodeau

LEAMINGTON - Its closest neighbours cannot change anything, but Leamington councillors say they should at least have the opportunity to comment on a development. Last week (Nov. 13), Council recommended that its administration come up with a forum to inform the residents on Anfred and Goslin streets and a section of Sturgeon Meadows about the project. The project will be built on about 14 acres of land immediately adjacent to the bypass, between Talbot St. and Oak St. East. Because the property is already zoned correctly, councillors were told by development director Paul Barnable “there is no law requiring them to get public comment.” The property is zoned R-3H (holding). In a report, Barnable said the planned project includes 14 multi-unit residences with six units in each for a total of 84 units. He said that could mean up to 252 people could be living there, but if boarding house use is sought, then the number of people could reach over 500. “I’m in favour of allowing the public to have a say,” said Councillor Tim Wilkinson. “We need to listen but I’m not sure what we can do,” said Deputy-Mayor Hilda MacDonald. “It’s badly needed,” said Mayor John Paterson, but he noted it was up to Council to make a decision on public input. When it learned of the project several months ago, Council was in favour, saying the town requires more low-cost housing, particularly that is geared to greenhouse workers. The developer also appeared before Council in the summer asking that it help speed up all the approvals needed by the municipality and other agencies. Barnable admitted there are still some approvals required, including some that “could impact the (proposed) design.” As well as the housing units are plans for a small commercial development. That would be separated from the housing by a road through to Anfred off the bypass.

No parking in six areas across Kingsville By Sheila McBrayne

KINGSVILLE – Kingsville Council approved limited, and in some cases no parking, on six Kingsville streets at its Tuesday, November 13 regular meeting. The following streets will have limited or no parking: • Sandybrook Way • Mettawas Lane • Hillview Crescent • Orchard Boulevard • Road 2 • Malo Street Kingsville Council heard from the Manager of Municipal Services Tim Del Greco that the town’s Traffic ByLaw is 13 years old and has been amended 12 times. During the annual review, 26 comment cards were received from residents as well as several emails. Deputy-Mayor Gord Queen successfully motioned for the six streets in question to be separated and discussed and voted on individually.

Sandybrook Way On Sandybrook Way, it was recommended and approved to have No Parking signs on both sides of the street from Division Street North to 27 Sandybrook Way. “I drove all six; I drove Sandybrook and that makes perfect sense,” said Councillor Tony Gaffan.

Hillview Crescent The recommendation put in front of Council was to put No Parking signs on both sides of Hillview Crescent from Division Street N. and heading west for 150 metres. Deputy-Mayor Queen pointed out that there were several apartment buildings in the area and there needed to be parking on one side. The question of which side to ban parking was deferred for further review.

Orchard Boulevard It was recommended and approved to add No Parking signs on the north side of Road 2 East from County Road 45 to 1604 Road 2 East.

Road 2 It was recommended and approved to have No Parking signs on the north side of Road 2 East from County Road 45 to 1604 Road 2 East.

Malo Street Malo Street was recommended to have No Parking signs added to both sides of the road because the street is very narrow. The town received a request from residents to make it a one-way street, but it was decided and approved by Council to have No Parking on both sides. When looking at the map provided in Council’s information package, he was concerned by all the red showing where people were not allowed to park. “I’m having a hard time – where do people park? The town usually has parking on a least one side of the road,” stated Gaffan. “I think there’s more issues than parking, there could be an access problem.” Kingsville Fire Chief Chuck Parsons told Council that he drove the area and definitely saw an access issue for fire emergency vehicles. “I drove the command vehicle

New Executive Director at Erie Shores Health Foundation By Sheila McBrayne

The Erie Shores Health Foundation welcomed Christine Colautti in her new position as Executive Director of the organization last week. Colautti’s first day was November 13 as she takes the reins from long-time director, Ross Barnwell, when he retires at the end of November. “I am very excited to take on this new role, as philanthropy is a passion that I have dedicated myself to,” said Colautti. “I sincerely look forward to working with the amazing team here to provide the support needed for patients and their families in Leamington and surrounding area.” Ross Barnwell started with the Leamington District Hospital Foundation in 1998, seven years after the Foundation was created in 1992. He was the first executive director hired for the Foundation. Barnwell is proud of his time at ESHF. From 2000 to 2015, $15 million was used for capital requirements at the local hospital. Barnwell is also proud of bringing hospice to Leamington. “Bringing hospice into Leamington and integrating the two services has been staisfying,” said Barnwell. Barnwell’s best memories involve people. “People, that’s what I’m about. You build on the premise of people and donors, making sure their money is well spent,” said Barnwell. “It’s a small community and you see these people everywhere,” he said. Barnwell is not concerned with getting bored in his retirement. “I have so many hobbies, now I can do them full time. And maybe a trip to Alaska,” said Barnwell. LEAMINGTON – On Monday, November 19, at Colautti admires the approximately 9:30 a.m. the Ontario Provincial Police community support that (OPP), Essex Windsor Emergency Medical Services Barnwell has earned over (EMS) and Leamington Fire Services responded to an the years. “I have big shoes industrial accident at a greenhouse operation on Road 4 to fill. New funeral home serving Wheatley – Denning’s of Wheatley By Sheila McBrayne

WHEATLEY – Wheatley’s funeral home changed hands last week as brothers Bill and Brett Denning became the owners of the former Hammond Funeral Home. Dennings are no strangers to small town needs as they have seven other funeral homes in Strathroy, Watford, Forest, Ailsa Craig, Rodney, West Lorne and Chatham. Denning Funeral Home originated in Strathroy in 1925 by Bill’s great grandfather Basil and was carried on by his grandfather Bill Sr. and his father Randy. Fourth generation Dennings, Bill and Brett, took over the family business in 2014 and continued to expand to eight locations and two cremation services in Chatham and St. Thomas. “Rodney was the first funeral home that I was the

funeral director in charge of and I just fell in love small towns. I loved how personal everything was. I still live there… Wheatley is perfect for us to be connected with,” said new owner Bill Denning. Dennings also purchased the former Bowman Funeral Home in Chatham in 2016. “In coming to ChathamKent almost three years ago, I found myself made welcome with open arms. Our neighbour’s willingness to help and the graciousness of the community was infectious. I couldn’t be happier to carry those traits the community has instilled in me to Wheatley,” said Jacob Rowe, Funeral Director for the Wheatley location as well as Chatham. “I am excited to share our passion for storytelling and uniquely honouring lives lived, while learning about the traditions and

traits that make these parts of Essex and Kent counties so unique,” he added. Dan Hammond, former owner of Hammond Funeral Home, began his career in 1988 working at the Dutot Funeral Home in Wheatley prior to purchasing it and the Leamington location in 1996. Hammond’s has served the funeral needs of Wheatley and area for 22 years. The Leamington location closed in 2011. “This didn’t happen overnight, it’s taken this long to find a good fit for Wheatley,” said Hammond. I thank everyone for their support over the years.” “Dan and I have been in conversation for a couple of years now, and we felt this was the right time,” said Denning. Denning’s of Wheatley is the new name for the funeral home, which offers full service before and after the

service. “Our aftercare program helps the family with all the necessary forms and paperwork like Canada Pension Death Benefit. We have a specialist who sits with the family and addresses all aspects afterwards,’ said Denning. Denning has been witness to a change in the industry. “Our generation

celebrates a life well lived. We grieve, but we truly celebrate the individual. It helps them come to terms with their loss in a positive way,” said Denning. As the Hammond Funeral Home ended its service to the community, Denning’s of Wheatley commenced with a new licence and with a great deal of pride for hav-

ing the opportunity to be a part of Wheatley and surrounding area. All pre-paid funeral arrangements made through Hammond Funeral Home are secure and will be honoured at Denning’s of Wheatley. For further information, contact Denning’s of Wheatley at 519825-7741.

Soli Deo Gloria Singers to present fall concert LEAMINGTON – The Soli Deo Gloria Singers fall concert will satisfy your senses as they sing through the seasons of life. In the late 1950s, folk artist Pete Seeger took the words of Ecclesiastes Chapter 3 and set them to music to create the popular rendition of “Turn, Turn, Turn.” This arrangement as the concert theme: “To everything there is a season and a time for every purpose under heaven!” Experience the seasons of life as God journeys and celebrates with us. Seasons of Love: There is a multitude of love songs written in every genre to please the senses. In 1818, Franz Schubert wrote “Lebenslust” (Joy of Living), a spirited song about the Austrian people’s strong love of people and homeland. In 2003, Josh Groban popularized a moving love song, “You Raise Me Up!”, and anyone who sings in a choir and loves music will relate to the words of the contemporary selection, “If Music Be the Food of Love, Sing On!” Seasons of Hope: During difficult times, you may question where God is during turmoil. Composer Kim Andre Arnesen answers with these powerful words found written on a concentration camp wall: “I believe in the sun even when it’s not shining. I believe in love even when I feel it not. I believe in God even when He is silent.” And the Irish melody, “Be Thou My Vision” garners strong hope. Seasons of Joy and Dance: It does our soul well to make time for joyful dance. Soli Deo Gloria Singers will present an old Israeli folk song, “Hava Nagila”, and the contemporary “Tango to Evora” arranged by Jon Washburn. Seasons of Change: Probably the most all-encom-

passing season of change is when a person makes their journey toward Heaven. A season of enlightenment is conveyed in the rousing spiritual “Walk the Streets of Gold”, followed by a rich gospel arrangement entitled “City Called Heaven”, where the choir joins together in a heavy dirge-style pace while the soloist floats ethereally overhead with a prayer of lament. Whether Soli Deo Gloria Singers perform in English, Spanish or German, whether classical, contemporary or spiritual, whether the songs originate from Austria , Israel, North America or Ni-

geria, “To Everything There is a Season!” and in every season we worship God! The Soli Deo Gloria Singers’ fall concert is on Saturday, Nov. 24 at 7:30 p.m. at UMEI, 614 Mersea Rd. 6, west of Hwy 77, north of Leamington. and on Sunday, Nov. 25 at 3:00 p.m. at Leamington United Mennonite Church, 78 Oak St. E. Tickets are $12 for adults and $6 for children in advance, or $15 for adults and $7 for children at the door. Tickets are available at Kindred Credit Union, from choir members or call UMEI at 519-326-7448 for more info.

IN MEMORIAM In Memory of a Dear Friend

Margaret rose saMple

October 1, 1949 - November 24, 1999

Remember him with a smile today, he was not one for tears. Reflect instead on memories of all the happy years. Recall to mind the way he spoke, and all the things he said. His strength, his stance, the way he walked - remember this instead. The good advice he’d give us, his eyes that shone with laughter. So much of him will never die, but live on forever after.

Softly the leaves of memories fall, Gently we gather and treasure them all. Some may forget, now that you’re gone And some may remember, no matter how long. A Friend

Always in our thoughts. Forever in our hearts. Love, your family

News of the pews WHEATLEY – On November 11 at Wheatley United Church, worship leader John Cats delivered a Remembrance Day message entitled “Lest We Forget”, reminding us that God has given us the Prince of Peace and offers peace in our hearts in the midst of life’s storms. It’s that time of year when sunlight hours slowly diminish until we reach the shortest day and the longest night of the year, which falls on Dec. 21, the Winter Solstice. Research tells us this day was once the traditional feast day for Saint Thomas the Apostle. We are invited to make the connection between Thomas’s doubts and struggles to believe the story of Jesus’ resurrection and our own struggles with darkness and heartache. Though Christmas is a time of celebration and joy, for many it can be a difficult time of year. Wheatley United is offering a gentle and comforting place of remembrance and reflection at a Blue Christmas Service on Friday, December 21 at 5:00 p.m. Those in the community and surrounding area who have lost loved ones this year or in past years are welcome to share in a non-denominational service in memory of the ones they have loved. Everyone is welcome and refreshments will be served following the service. Committee leaders, please submit your budgets to the finance committee. The Finance Committee meets Thursday, Nov. 29 at 2:30 p.m. and Council will meet at 3 p.m. Ushering on Nov. 25 are Allen Ascott and Shirley Getty. Anyone wishing to join the usher’s team, please call Cheryl at 519-825-9194 or Ken at 519-825-7300.

KINGSVILLE – Held after the popular shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday, November 27 is a day for giving back. This year, Kingsville Community Centre is raising money for “Life & Living Well - Neighbour Helping Neighbour”. The Neighbour Helping Neighbour (NHN) program has helped dozens of people in Kingsville and Essex County to be mindful of others, to offer services, to support one another – at no cost – and in the process creating opportunities where people can count on their neighbours and friends for extra help. Neighbour Helping Neighbour is helping to ensure that the community wraps around people in distress and figures out how to help. Stop by the Kingsville Community Centre at 1860 Division Road N. and complete a registration form to make a difference in your neighbour’s life. Through a partnership with GIVE65, a program of the Home Instead Senior Care Foundation of Canada, there are $25,000 in matching grants available on #GivingTuesday. Kingsville has the chance to double its fundraising efforts up to $5,000, but only while those matching dollars are still available. Matching dollars are awarded on a first donated, first matched basis, meaning the earlier you give, the more likely your gift is to be matched. Donations can be made anytime up to Tuesday, November 27 through giving envelopes or debit at Kingsville Community Centre. If you wish to give on-line, giving starts at 12 a.m. Central Standard Time on Tuesday, November 27, at https://www. give65.ca/projects/lifeandlivingwell and it concludes at 12 a.m. Central Standard Time on Wednesday, November 28. Learn more about the fundraising efforts and how your gift will make a difference in the lives of seniors in the community on the GIVE65 giving page.

Instead, she studied math and computers, got married, had kids and worked as a project manager. Her life seemed perfect. Then a near-simultaneous breakup and job loss forced her to relocate, find a new career and raise a family alone. Music went on the back burner; she never stopped writing, but songs went unfinished — until her kids fixed that. “When my 18-year-old daughter and 16-year-old son kept telling me to ‘Get a life, Mom’, they really were showing wisdom beyond their years,” she said. She left her federal government job in 2013 to pursue music full-time under her maiden name Francine Leclair. The self-produced album An Ordinary Person came in 2008, followed in 2014 by Re-Drawn. Improving accessibility at Highbury Canco Arena Visitors from Franklin Gardens Long Term Care Home in Leamington enjoy a Thursday, Nov. 15 GOJHL game between the Leamington Flyers and London Nationals Thursday, Nov. 15. During the summer of 2017, volunteers with the Accessibility Advisory Committee took on a project to improve accessibility to specific areas of Highbury Canco Arena at the Leamington Kinsmen Recreation Complex. At the time, two areas were addressed. The first was a section at the north end of the mezzanine area (pictured), designated for wheelchair users. The area was equipped with a safety rail and six marked wheelchair spaces while fold-up chairs were also made available for visitors assisting with wheelchair patrons. The second designated area focused on Sections B and C at the south end of the arena, where an assist handrail was installed from the floor to the rail of the mezzanine area. The alteration allows spectators to choose seating in those parts of the arena for safe accessibility. The committee plans to make other sections accessible in the same manner. Veterans remembered at Sun Parlor Home LEAMINGTON – Handwritten letters expressing thanks and gratitude were delivered Friday, November 9 to nine veterans who now live at Sun Parlor Home in Leamington. The letters were written by employees of Nature Fresh in Leamington and delivered by General Manager John Ketler. “I would like to thank you this Remembrance Day for the sacrifices you have made for all of us to enjoy our freedom,” wrote Ketler in his letter. “Sometimes many of us take our lives for granted, when we should be thinking of you and what you had to go through for our lives today.” Ketler handed his letter to Norm Jones, 83, who was wearing a ball cap honouring Navy veterans. “It’s a wonderful thing,” said Jones’ wife Esther. “It’s very important to remember.” Jones enlisted in the Navy when he was just 17-years-old. He was stationed in Halifax and worked as a diver who would repair the underside of the ships. He graduated from college as a police officer and went on to work as a Leamington police officer. The other veterans who received letters were Joseph Brosseau, Larry Dawson, Ivy Tilden, Robert Clark, John Vermeiren, John Clarke, Gus Pavao, and John Waddell. “Thanks for all you had to do,” read one letter. “We shall not forget.” Another handwritten letter thanked the veterans for the “freedom that we have.” The mournful sound of bagpipes filled the hallways of the Leamington long-term care home, and outside, rain fell on the dozens of crosses bearing the names of deceased residents who were veterans. The small, white, wooden crosses were constructed by Leamington Scouts. Each bears the name of a fallen veteran and is adorned with a red poppy.

Bantam Stars shut out Fillies LEAMINGTON/WHEATLEY – The Southpoint Bantam Stars played host to the Kent County Fillies on Sunday afternoon, Nov. 18 at the Unico Rink. The Stars came ready and were focused for the matchup as both teams battled hard and found themselves deadlocked with a score of 0-0 after two periods. When the puck dropped for the third period, the Lady Stars cranked up the offence and scored 2 unanswered goals en route to a dominant 2-0 win. Shannon Harris and Britney Wiebe scored for the Stars, with assists going to Meagan Derksen, Shannon Harris and Ava Hildebrandt. Evan “The Wall” Gualtieri absolutely shut the door between the pipes for the Bantam Stars as she earned a big shutout for her team.

The Kingsville District High School Cavaliers Junior Girls Basketball team lost a hard fought playoff battle against the Wallaceburg Tartans on Wednesday, November 14 in Wallaceburg. The girls ended up on the losing end of a 47-36 game. Team members are, in back, left to right: Emma LeBrun, Sascha Batke, Gemma Wilkinson, Sonnie Stomp, Jessica Johnson, Nicole Wuerch. In front: Kennedy Bezaire, Élise Stammler, Mel Gosselin, Saydie Mulder. Congratulations on an excellent season. (Submitted Photo)

Novice Red faces Essex Orange LEAMINGTON/WHEATLEY – This past weekend, Southpoint Community Trophies Novice Red took on Essex Orange for the second time and had difficulty creating offensive chances. Essex came out hard but Southpoint kept them off the scoreboard in the first period. In the second, Essex picked up three goals, one of which was on a power play. Southpoint managed to kill off two other penalties during the game. Connor Rumble-Anastacio carried the puck the length of the ice three times but was unable to put it in the Essex net. Gavin Butineillo, London Hildebrand and Sean Amaral all tried carrying the puck down the ice but were met with heavy resistance. Essex scored one more time in the third to finish the scoring and beat Southpoint 4-0. Bright spots for Southpoint were Reid Charles and Darius Quiring (rookies to the game) who aggressively went after the puck. The takeaway from the game is that the boys have to develop a sense of when to skate with the puck and when to pass. This will happen easier when they become more aware of their position and their teammates position on the ice.

Newest Flyer Thomas Michaud and London’s Austin Jeffers crash into the boards in a race for the puck during the second period of a Thursday, Nov. 15 Western Conference match at Highbury Canco Arena. The Flyers held on for a 2-1 win, handing the Nationals their second regulation loss of the season. (Southpoint Sun Photos)

Lisa and Abe Fehr are presented with flowers and a framed collage photo from two of the Leamington Flyers co-owners — Jason Melo and Cam Crowder — during an appreciation night at Highbury Canco Arena Thursday, Nov. 15. Abe Fehr, former owner of the local Junior B team, sold the Flyers to the current ownership group shortly after the 2017-’18 season concluded.

Flyers upset Nationals By Bryan Jessop

LEAMINGTON – The Flyers donned alternate vanilla-coloured jerseys for their most recent home game, but the night was the furthest thing from plain or ordinary. Leamington hosted the league-leading London Nationals Thursday, Nov. 15 in a game that also served as Domino’s Pizza Night and an Appreciation Night for former team owner Abe Fehr and his wife Lisa Fehr. The Flyers marked the occasion with special vintage-looking vanilla/ ivory and red jerseys sporting orange numbers and topped the event with a 2-1 victory over their London guests. The loss, witnessed by 1,652 spectators, was the Nationals’ third non-win of the season. It was also the first time this season Leamington played a penalty-free game. At the same time, they were scoreless on two power plays. The contest was also the first as Flyers for forwards

Thomas Michaud and Josh King, who were acquired in a straight trade from Chatham in exchange for Leamington’s top two players in points — 19-year-olds Griffin Robinson (23 points in 18 games) and Maddux Rychel (21 points in 17 games). Michaud, 18, had 14 points in 15 games for the Maroons while King, 19, had five in 13 games. “Parting with our top two guys wasn’t an easy decision, but we had that gut feeling telling us we had to to something to be more successful,” explained Flyers head coach and part owner Cam Crowder. “This was a decision about the guys we got, not the ones going out. This isn’t a team about one or two players, it has to be a bunch of guys working collectively towards the same goal. King brings something we didn’t have — he’s a big guy who likes to forecheck. Michaud is a smart, skilled addition and a good allaround player.” Leamington put itself on the board first after Johnny Ulicny and Wyatt O’Neil

were sent away for a twoon-one break on a feed by Adam Groat. O’Neil sent a pass across to Ulicny, who from close range, snapped the helper past Zachary Springer for the 1-0 lead. The home team’s play went from strong to stronger in the second, where the Flyers’ defense held London to five shots as Leamington’s attack registered seven. Rory DiNiro potted the only goal of the middle frame, releasing a top shelf wrist shot from the right side of Springer’s net. Preston Corp and King drew assists. London pulled Springer for the sixth skater late in the third and was rewarded with a James Turner shot that bounced off traffic and soared over Borgiel’s right shoulder. The Flyers held on for the win however, pulling to within a point of secondplace Chatham. “It was great to see 20 guys playing for each other — it was a great defensive game,” Crowder explained. “It was a great feeling,” DiNiro said of beating the top-ranked Nationals. “(King and Michaud) won the battles along the walls and made it easier for us.” On Saturday, the Flyers visited the Komoka Kings. Leamington won its first road game of the year with a 3-0 shutout for Borgiel. Associate player Liam Hall scored the game winner in the first while Zach Taylor and King added insurance tallies in the third.

Pets of the Week

CASPER

BAMBINE

Casper is a very timid soul who will likely hide in new surroundings. He needs a very patient person who will provide gentle encouragement to gain his trust, someone who understands that it will take time before he accepts your touch. Once that happens, Casper will purr and head butt nonstop and may never want to leave your side.

Bambine is a senior sweetheart! She is hoping to find her place in a clam home that will love her. She has skin issues and hopes they will continue to give her proper care! Bambine has had a bit of a rough go first starting with loosing her owner, then having to have two mammary tumors removed as well as having a major dental procedure! She is now on the mend and hopes you have a gentle soul with a gentle approach when spending time with her.

GOODFELLOWS

Don’t even go there I’m willing to bet that being a real estate agent is one of those jobs that’s a lot harder Bryan Jessop than it looks. That being said, most of us know the top three keys to success in that particular career path — location, location, location. Perhaps nobody better understands the importance of finding an ideal host site than the organizers of major sporting events. Finding that perfect spot to host a high profile athletic game or tournament has truly been a case of easier said than done lately. Just ask the National Football League or International Olympic Committee. Last week, the city of Calgary made its collective opinion clear on the matter of how it felt about tossing its hat into the ring as a potential host for the 2026 Olympic Winter Games. A convincing 56.4 per cent told city council to take this bid and shove it — about 39,000 more than the sum of Calgarians who thought it was a good idea. By this point, it’s no secret that the Olympic Games have left a bitter taste in the mouths of would-be spectators across the globe. Performance enhancing drug scandals and one controversy after another centered around biased/ bribed judges have worn thin on the patience of the fan base. The “spirit” of the games is on life support and there aren’t many cities willing to pump enormous wads of cash through its circulatory system to keep it alive. Back in 1988 — the last time Calgary hosted The Games — the world was still for the most part looking at the international competition through rose-coloured glasses. Nowadays, the Olympics are nothing but a money pit for host cities. Eight years ago, Vancouver was lucky enough to more or less break even. Most sites aren’t so fortunate. Some saw a Calgary bid as the opportunity to fund a replacement for the geriatric Saddledome — an issue of contention with the National Hockey League that some fear could trigger a relocation of the Flames to Houston. Calgary however refused to pay for that billionaire’s new toy (at least for now), so it comes as no surprise to hear its citizens tell the IOC to take a long walk off a short ski ramp. In the NFL, some less than ideal circumstances have forced the Los Angeles Rams to play their most recent

home game, well, at home. On occasion, each professional league likes to gauge interest in their product on unfamiliar turf. Unfortunately, that turf — Mexico City’s Azteca Stadium — is in a pretty sad state of affairs. It was supposed to host this week’s Monday Night Football game between the LA Rams and Kansas City Chiefs, but such a venture would have been akin to hosting the Kentucky Derby on a minefield. The site has hosted several pre-season NFL games and the odd regular season tilt, but its hybrid turf playing surface has seen better days. It’s my understanding that fans of the past few Shakira concerts — imitating some of her dance moves during her performances — have joined forces with heavy rainfall to leave the playing surface in shambles. The new toy syndrome that is finding a refreshing, unfamiliar backdrop for your next sporting event is kind of like retiring your old car in favour of a new (or new-ish) replacement. It might seem like a good idea, but you’d better kick the tires and put the payment calculator through its paces before signing the dotted line.

Southpoint Sun - B-7

Southpoint Atom Minors win 2, lose 1 in weekend play LEAMINGTON/ WHEATLEY – This past weekend, the Southpoint Atom Minors travelled to Belle River to play the Canadiens for the first time in regular season.

Belle River 6 Southpoint 5

On Fri. Nov. 16, netminder Nolan Meadows squared up in his net, First period began, and the Canadians were relentless taking shot after shot. The Caps netted the first goal of the game, scored by defenseman Massimo Ingratta, assisted by Ryder Grossi. Shortly after, the Canadians fired the puck in and netted their first, followed by a second and third by period’s end. The Caps managed to squeeze a second goal, scored by Noah Borges and assisted by Ben McFadden and Nathan Ford. The Canadiens scored a fourth goal, followed by the Caps’ Noah Borges pushing his way through to net his second of the game. Assists went to Gabriel Rino and Ben Arquette. The Canadiens, with a loaded bench, played as a strong force and scored again in the second, bringing them to a 5-3 lead going into the third.

Another goal from the Canadians made it questionable whether the Caps could come back from the three-goal lead. The Caps dug deep and pounded right back, scoring their fourth goal by Mitchell Moracci, assisted by Ben McFadden and Owen Hunter. With the clock counting down, Noah Borges deked the Canadiens to score a solo goal and a hat trick, and brought the Caps within one to tie. The Caps finished the game with a 6-5 loss to the Canadiens.

Southpoint 2 Tecumseh 0

Sat. Nov. 17 the Atom Minors hosted the Tecumseh Eagles to face off for the first time. The Caps dominated the action in the Eagles’ end in the first period, but it remained scoreless until the third. The Caps’ Ryder Grossi scored their first goal of the game with minutes left, assisted by Owen Hunter. The Caps game-winning goal was then scored by Mitchell Moracci, assisted by Rex Pearce, closing the doors on the Eagles. Netminder Nicholas DiMilo made numerous saves throughout and handed his teammates a shutout.

Southpoint 3 LaSalle 2

On Sun. Nov. 18 they travelled to LaSalle to face the Sabres, and each player had on his/her warrior face when eyeing up the competition. The Sabres managed to squeeze a shot by the Caps’ netminder to lead 1-0. The Caps evened the score in the second period with Noah Borges firing one in, assisted by Matthew Mastromatteo who was quick to pick up the rebound from Nathan Ford’s attempt on the Sabres net. Going into the third with the Sabres leading 2-1, the Cap’ Gabriel Rino scored their second goal, assisted by Noah Borges and Ryder Grossi. The game was tied and penalties were high on both sides when Mitchell Morraci scored the Caps’ third goal. With time still left on the clock, the Sabres coach pulled his goalie and put out another skater to see if that would change the game. The Caps were not leaving quietly and without a fight for this win. The puck dropped in the Caps’ end and the players, including net minder Nolan Meadows, managed to keep the Sabers from the win.

Some assembly required Jim Williams of Leamington has a story to tell: “In the late ’50s or ’60s, Richard Desjardins of Harrow built or bought a hot rodded 1932 Ford 5-window coupe. The roof was removed, turning the car into a ‘coupester.’ “In 1966, Richard sold it to Roger and Ann Clark, also of Harrow. Roger installed a 1960 Mercury V8 and made a home-built roof for the car, his daily driver to work in Windsor. “He painted it green with white pin-striping. He added chrome reverse rear wheels and E/T mags with motorcycle fenders up front. “It was displayed at the First Canadian Street Rod Nationals in London, Ontario, in 1972 with photos in Street Rod magazine, October 1972. “Around 1973, Roger sold the car to John Ellis of Essex, who soon sold it to Joe Beausoleil of Leamington, who briefly drove it. When he married his wife Elaine in 1974, the car went into storage for the next 34 years. “Before storage, Joe removed the homemade

KINGSVILLE – A week following a hard fought tie, Kingsville Novice Green and Harrow Novice Blue met for a rematch in the friendly confines of the Kingsville Arena. The home ice advantage was evident early as the Green Machine jumped out to a quick lead when Quinn Monminie converted on a forced neutral zone turnover. A bad bounce later in the first ended up on a Harrow player’s stick, who made no mistake sneaking one behind Sam Ward to square the teams at one. It appeared as though it might stay that way after Colby Snoei lit the lamp but was subsequently waved off due to a backchecking Harrow forward dislodging the net. Video replay was inconclusive (more accurately non-existent) and the game remained knotted. The second half belonged to the home team as Monminie completed the natural hat trick – plus one – resulting in a 4-1 final. Strong defence was on full display by Kingsville, quieting Harrow’s potent offensive threats. Rocco Baillargeon (2), William Loncke and Tyson Everaert picked up assists in the win.

Essex Ravens Atom AE enjoy successful weekend ESSEX – Continued progress in the play of the Essex Raven Atom AE team earned the squad some valuable points in the standings of the Bluewater Hockey League. On Friday, Nov. 16 the team from Essex entered the confines of the one-loss Belle River Jr. Canadiens and skated away with an amazing 4-3 nail-biting victory. The entire team is to be commended on a wire-to-wire great effort in this match. With a player in the penalty box and the Belle River net empty, the gang withheld a furious attack by Belle River in holding on to the victory in the waning seconds. Alexandrea Huntley shut the door and earns praise in this win. Scoring for Essex was Ryan Reid and Nicholas Brophey with a pair each. Brophey also chipped in with a pair of assists. The following evening, the LaSalle Sabres were the competition for the Ravens. This one was a seesaw affair with goals aplenty. The Sabres had taken a 2-1 lead into the third period when the floodgates opened. Essex managed to outscore their opponents 4-3 in the frame and salvage a 5-5 tie with the upstart Sabres. The Sabres had handed Belle River their first loss of the year the previous week, so this was a valuable point in the standings. Both teams played excellent throughout and earned the one point. Caiden St. John notched the hat trick, scoring the last three goals of the game. Austin Hamilton and Ryan Reid notched singles. The defensive core of James Sonoski, Cole Gossmann, Ellis Fleming, Keegan Stack, Brendan Ledoux and Hudson Diemer all gave stellar performances in this one. The team would like to thank Lally Ford for their sponsorship.
