ON THE COVER

T

he Maggie Issue is one of my very favorite magazines to work on. It gets me out of the home office much more than normal as I go around snapping photos of all the winners, which is fun for two reasons. First, it gives me a chance to see the people that make it possible for me to do this. Second, it opens a window into the way our local small businesses operate. It warms my heart how much care everyone always takes to make sure their employees get to share in the public recognition and credit. I hear over and over “We couldn’t do this without...” So here’s to our business owner winners, of course, but let’s offer a special CHEERS to all the emplyees of small businesses. They are part of the magic and yes, we couldn’t do this without them.

CURRENTS Spring on the Island Town of Oak Island Has Big Plans STORY AND PHOTOS BY JEFFREY STITES

S

pring is coming (finally!), and Oak Island is embracing it in a big way. The Town of Oak Island Recreation Department has been hard at work developing events and programs that allow us to have fun, celebrate community and the season, and still, keep us safe in the Time of Covid. With a parade, markets, concerts, Easter-themed hunts, and even a Very Special Bunny making visits all around the town, Oak Island is looking forward to a fun Spring.

First up will be the Oak Island Mardi Gras By The Sea, featuring a parade, market and live music on Saturday, March 13. The parade will be a reverse affair like the Christmas by the Sea Parade this past December. Mardi Gras themed floats, stands, golf carts and such will line up along Dolphin Drive while parade goers drive past starting at SE 40th Street. Walking is not permitted and parade viewers must remain in their vehicles, but everyone is encouraged to dress in their Mardi Gras finest! The Mardi Gras Market featuring locally grown and handmade items from local vendors will be open from noon until 4 pm on the Middleton Park fields. During the market, the Oak Island Amphitheater in Middleton Park will host live Blues and

Soul music. Socially distanced circles will be painted on the lawn and spectators are asked to kick back inside the circles and not fill in the space in between. If all circles are filled, please wait for one to open up. In addition to the socially distant circles, COVID protocols in place during the market include hand washing stations, oneway traffic at the parade and market, one shopper at a time in any vendor booth, social distancing picnic circles, social distancing signage, and the use of marks covering the nose and mouth by staff, vendors, and participants. Anyone who is feeling ill, or is experiencing any COVID-19 symptoms is asked to remain at home until they are well. Individuals who fail to adhere to community

safety standards may be asked to leave the celebrations by the Mardi Gras by the Sea Supervisor or the Oak Island Recreation Department Director. Once Mardi Gras is behind us, it’s time for the Easter Bunny to do his thing! The Town of Oak Island has three ways to bring a little Easter Bunny to your celebration. The Great Oak Island Egg Dash will see the Easter Bunny delivering crafts and Easter eggs to front yards all over Oak Island. The program is designed for children from 2-10 years old and participants must register with the Oak Island Recreation Center by March 24. Spaces are limited and houses will be assigned a delivery time between 4-6 pm on on either March 30, March 31 or April 1. The cost is $5 per child. Yards must be safe for staff and pets must be secured. The Easter Bunny will not have physical contact with participants, but photos from a distance are welcome. All participants must wear a mask over mouth and nose during photos. Another option is the Take Home Contactless Egg Hunt. Children ages 2-12 are invited to register by March 24 to pick up a bag of toy-filled eggs at the Recreation Center as the Easter Bunny waves from a safe distance. Participants are asked to remain in their vehicles at all times as staff delivers egg kits to the car. Cost is $5 per child.

CURRENTS Easter Bunny fans of any age can participate in the free Drive By Bunny program on March 30 and 31 between 10 am and noon. Sign up your house, street, even your friends, to have the easter Bunny and Friends party their way through your neighborhood as they slowly drive down your road spreading seasonal cheer. The Great Easter Scavenger Hunt on Oak Island is a free event open to all ages and will lead participants all over the Town of Oak Island searching for clues. Teams will drive through the Recreation Center parking lot to pick up a packet including a list of scavenger hunt rules, a clue sheet and the first clue on Thursday, April 1 from 9 am-6 pm. The hunt begins April 3. Teams will visit each site, and uncover the hidden clues along the way. Clues will

be laminated, and fixed at each site. Teams will complete each challenge, and take a picture with the clue, before proceeding to the next phase of the scavenger hunt (CLUES WILL REMAIN AT THEIR LOCATIONS). Once a team has completed their scavenger hunt, they will return to the Oak Island Recreation Center, and turn in their clue sheet to receive their completion certificate and Easter-themed prizes! Also on Easter Weekend, the Town of Oak Island will host the Spring Fling Market and Music in Middleton Park. Support local Brunswick County craft and food vendors while exploring a market brimming with one-of-a-kind coastal crafts for the ideal seasonal souvenir. Live entertainment will kick off from 2-4 pm at the Middleton Amphitheater for the perfect picnic lunch in one of the park’s designated socially dis-

Kicking It Old School Adult Kickball Brings Back The Memories STORY BY JEFFREY STITES

W

e all, at least those of us of a certain age I suppose, remember playground recess kickball games. That red ball. You known the one. The same ball used for the dreaded dodgeball death matches, but this time just rolling toward you in an entirely unthreatening manner. All you had to do was kick the thing and run. My kind of sport, really. Being a hand-eye coordination challenged child (and adult), baseball was never my thing at all, but kickball, that I could play. And I wasn’t even picked last most of the time because I could run! I have fond memories of kickball. Fast forward a few decades and I’m a relatively well-adjusted adult with a real job and all, working and paying bills and mowing the grass (sometimes) and doing all the Very Serious Adult Things. Kickball was not one of those things. Until the lovely and talented Lisa came home from work (as a reporter for the State Port Pilot and one of her beats was the Oak Island police log) and announced that we’d been invited to join the Oak Island Police Department Adult Kickball League team. I snapped back to those playground days when kickball was pretty much the one “sport” I could play and jumped at the

chance to relive those days. It never occurred to me that kickball might not agree with a body that hadn’t been running around at recess everyday in quite some time. Matter of fact, once gym class stopped forcing me to, I had decided running should be reserved for those times when a man with a knife was chasing you. Or maybe zombies (but just the fast kind — I could out walk a Night of the Living Dead zombie). Nor did it occur to me that my catching and throwing skills had not improved from their dismal state of my youth. Nope, I thought kickball was

CURRENTS a perfect way to get out there and do the sports thing. As it turned out, we ended up on exactly the right team for us. We were all in it for the fun and nostalgia. We’d all roll up on game nights, some of us, including me, often straight from work, quickly sort out some idea of who would cover what position, and off we went into competition. Some of that competition took things more seriously. I’m looking at you Oak Island Fire Department. They actually practiced. And, I think, strategized. Strategy in kickball? To each his own, I guess. But us, nope, we went out and played and laughed and generally made fools of ourselves. I became known for my heroic crawl over home plate after tripping over thin air on my way from third base. At the time it made sense. Staying low would make me a more difficult target for any attempts to throw me out. And, of course, crawling is much easier than standing up. During one game, one of our players announced loudly in the middle of a play that he’d “broken his spleen.” Another time, Lisa made a Sports Illustrated-worthy catch simply because NOT catching the

ball would have hurt and she wasn’t having that. I don’t recall if we ever actually won a game. But that wasn’t the point, at least not to me, and I think, to my teammates. We had a blast. We got outside and enjoyed beautiful spring evenings with a view of the ocean and the company of friends. We got some sort of exercise. We remembered that kickball may not have been as easy as our memories told us. But we also remembered why we loved it as children.

It was still fun. That was one of the first seasons the Oak Island ran an adult kickball league, but it has proven popular and they are still rolling strong today. If you’d like to relive the kickball glory days of your youth, or just get out and have a ton of fun, signups are going on now via the Oak Island Recreation Department. You may sign up as team or as a free agent up until April 1 using the link on the little graphic accompanying this article. Go ahead, do it. You know you want to.

Coastal Home & Lifestyle Expo 2021

Southport-Oak Island Chamber of Commerce Hosting New Event On Oak Island STORY BY JEFFREY STITES

A

s the summer season starts to wind up, the Southport -Oak Island Chamber of Commerce is hosting a Coastal Home and Lifestyle Showcase to help service providers, contractors, retailers, and food and beverage businesses connect with potential customers. This new annual event takes place on Saturday, May 8 from 10 am - 3 pm in Middleton Park Extension behind the Oak Island town hall. Admission will be free and locals, visitors and out of town homeowners will enjoy free samples, giveaways, food, music and can register for a $200 cash drawing. Chamber Executive Director Karen Sphar says spring is the perfect time for such an event. “Spring is all about nesting and renewal – the birds are singing louder, the blooms on the trees and flowers are brighter, and people are in a state of mind to make improvements or changes to their homes or lives. An expo focused on how to help people make these changes is perfect in spring.”

The popular Coastal Consumer Showcase hosted by the Chamber has been moved to January and this Home and Lifestyle Expo added to the annual calendar. “We are moving the Coastal Consumer Showcase which is all the different types of businesses in our community to January because it is not weather dependent,” Sphar said. “ The Coastal Home & Lifestyle Showcase naturally lends itself

to spring because its focus is on businesses that can protect, support or create indoor and outdoor living spaces or the activities and health of a person.” “We expect a nice crowd of residents and second homeowners will take the opportunity to Shop Local and get ideas. A business who provides services or products related or supporting the home and lifestyle will want to be seen and take advantage of the opportunity to talk with potential new clients,” Sphar said. “You may not make a sale today but you need to make an impression so that you can close the deal in the future.” Restaurants, bakeries and wineshops are also welcome to participate. “This is a great opportunity for our restaurants and baker-

ies to get some exposure but also sell direct to those who are in attendance. People get hungry and thirsty at these events,” she said. However, no alcohol sales will one permitted. This may be a perfect opportunity to join your local Chamber of Commerce. “You don’t have to be a member of the Chamber of Commerce to purchase a display booth,” Sphar said. “However, it is a good time to consider Chamber membership since member businesses receive a discounted booth fee and since we are at the end of the fiscal year, your business will receive 14 months of membership for the price of 12!

Ricki Hiatt, co-chairperson for 2-D exhibits, sees this spring opening of the gallery as symbolic of the feelings of renew-

The pottery contingent is stepping up with their Easter/ Spring Mug Challenge. Becky Cleary, co-chairperson for 3-D exhibits, reports, “I’ve been checking with the potters and they are enthusiastically working on their mugs. This Mug Challenge gives them something different to work on while “hunkering down” at home.” This portion of the show allows art lovers to vote for their favorite, and purchase them as well. This show has no judge but the public, no awards but purchases, and no theme, just members of the cooperative working together to initiate the spring season in the gallery.

Arts Teacher Support Stepping Up For Arts Awards Grants

Stepping Up For Arts?

STORY BY JEFFREY STITES

T

he St. James Artisans’ charitable organization Stepping Up For Arts (SUFA) recently awarded teacher grants to four Brunswick County Public Schools teachers. SUFA’s fundraising efforts included selling SUFA Tote Bags and SUFA Holiday Raffle Baskets well as accepting donations in general.

When was this organization founded and what is your mission? From where is your membership drawn? Stepping Up For Arts is the sister organization to The Artisans. The Artisans draw membership from the community of St.James, but membership in Stepping Up For Arts is open to all.

The following teachers received grants for their projects:

Aside from charitable activities, does Step Up For Arts have any other activities you’d like to share?

Nancy Miller – Bolivia Elementary School – Greeting Card Projects Kathy Peck – Belville Elementary School – Glaze for Ceramics Theresa Reiter – Jessie Mae Monroe Elementary School – Landscape Art Casey Black – Cedar Grove Middle School – Band Software In addition to the grants, SUFA also do-

nated $1,000 for teacher supplies. Due to the COVID pandemic, each student must have their own art supplies and those must be sanitized before the next class. These funds will provide teachers with extra supplies to help with the transition. We spoke with Stepping Up For Art’s VP for Community Arts and Education Carol Kidd about the grant awarding process and the organization itself.

Can you tell me a little more about

We sponsor workshops for artists, conduct shows and events as fundraisers, provide help with community events that would like to have face painting, art displays, provide art for the community center and town hall, changing it every 3 months. The latest workshop was held in November in collaboration with Associated Artists of Southport, painting silk scarves.

I see the winners are elementary and middle school teachers. Was that the focus, on younger art students?

We have granted funds to all levels in the past years. It just happened that this year the grants went to middle and elementary schools.

Was the additional $1,000 distributed to the district as a whole or these particular grant winners?

Some of the County’s teachers provided a list of supplies they needed earlier this school year when we thought we had a source of funds. That source did not materialize, and our Steering Committee allowed for $1,000 to be spent on supplies needed.

Where did the idea for these grants come from? Why are they particularly important now?

Arts teachers have very small budgets. We ask them to submit descriptions of projects they would like to do with their students but can’t afford with their normal supply funds. This year we helped out a band teacher and three visual arts teachers. The past years’ grants included funding for music programs, field trips, school dance groups and helped with theatrical productions.

What was the selection process like? Did teachers submit projects for consideration? How were the winners chosen?

At the beginning of November applications are made available to fine arts teachers of Brunswick County Public Schools through the supervisors. Teachers are asked to complete an application, describing the project, the need for the project and the benefit to their students. They are also asked to give rationale for the project, provide a list of the materials they wish to purchase, the cost, and vendors. The winners are selected by a panel of our members who go over the applications, scoring each of the areas and then discussing each of the projects. This is our usual procedure.

March Brunswick Civil War Roundtable Zoom Meeting Explores Corespondence

R

eturning by popular demand to the Brunswick Civil War Round Table is guest speaker Peter S. Carmichael, Ph.D., one of the nation’s foremost authorities on the American Civil War. Carmichael will address the group at the virtual meeting on Tuesday, March 2. He has planned an extraordinary presentation entitled, “Three Couples at War…and not with each other.” The Zoom meeting begins at 7 pm, and everyone is invited. Membership is required, however. Email Brunswickcwrt@gmail.com to join prior to the meeting. Annual membership dues are $25. The Battle of New Market was fought on May 15, 1864, in Virginia

during the Valley Campaign of 1864. A makeshift Confederate army of 4,100 men led by Confederate General Breckinridge, which included cadets from the Virginia Military Institute (VMI), defeated Union General Franz Sigel and his Army of the Shenandoah. On the winning side, Breckinridge

was a politician who served as the 14th Vice-President of the United States in 1856, and later mounted an unsuccessful presidential bid in 1860.

He joined the Confederacy at the start of the Civil War, and served as brigade commander at the Battle of Shiloh. Promoted to Major General in

COMMUNITY 1862, he fought in numerous noteworthy battles, including New Market and Cold Harbor, before serving as the final Confederate Secretary of War in 1865. On the losing side, Franz Sigel was an intriguing historical figure. In losing the Battle of New Market, he failed to provide a campaign victory General Ulysses S. Grant wanted in the Shenandoah Valley. Sigel was a fantastic organizer, loyal to his friends, valued education, understood the value of image and influence, and loved the ideals of freedom and liberty. Yet he struggled with leadership, which hampered his military career. His two great blunders in the New Market Campaign were the loss of confidence from his regimental commanders, and piece-mealing his army into the battle. His commanders did not fully trust him or understand his orders, sometimes even speaking to his troops in German when frustrated on the battlefield. The end result at New Market, two generals, two different lifestyles, and one conclusion, a victory for the South.

ART BEAT Wisconsin To Southport

Local Artist Explores Nature In Paint STORY BY CARLA EDSTROM

T

aking in the incredible beauty of nature is something we can all certainly use during these most difficult times. A solitary walk on the beach and deeply inhaling that salty sea breeze can calm your mind like nothing else. But when it’s cold outside, I suggest a day spent in a museum or browsing local art galleries. A simple still life painting can come to life and bring back treasured memories. Landscape paintings can bring us back to places we have once visited or lived in, taking our minds away from the troubles of the world. Nancy Henkel Schulte, local painter originally from Kenosha, Wisconsin, remembers walking through the Chicago Art Museum as a young woman and admiring the Andrew Wyeth collection. Much of her work includes the beauty all around us such as landscapes, still lives, flowers and also in-

cludes beloved dogs and architectural studies. “I have been painting for 35 years and try very hard to improve with every painting and lesson. I have gone to every art museum in my travels and I always carry my sketchbook and camera,” she said.“ I have taken from more than 40 people…”

Always the creative artist, Schulte also loves to work with her hands in cooking, decorating, sewing,

quilting, writing and knitting. “I was very good even as a grade school artist and won awards through high school. However, I thought I should have a ‘real job’ and was very interested in nursing as my career. I continued to take art lessons while raising four kids and nursing,” she said. “People always ask me how long it takes me to do a painting. I think and dream about a painting before I ever sketch. An artist ‘sinks in’ a creative mode and time just flies,” she explained. “I love people, animals, flowers and landscape. I like to show ordinary things in a meaningful way. life itself. It is imperative for me to record everyday happenings in a sensitive manner. I want to evoke emotion. I’m deeply blessed and grateful to share my talent with others. My talent is a blessing that I recognize and develop through the years.”

Being an artist involves being a part of a community and arts family that is often more than willing to encourage and teach others. “Artists I met along the way that were older than me would have a tendency to take me under their wing. I appreciated their interest in me. They gently encourage me. I have taught painting for 30 years because I want others to enjoy the creative process as well. It is a way for me to give back and I’m very glad to do it. I volunteered at a kids camp for cancer, nursing homes, and taught all ages in my home. I miss this since COVID came.” “Finding time to be creative is sometimes difficult,” said Schulte.

You can see more of Schulte’s work at Franklin Square Gallery and the Artisan’s Gallery on Howe in Southport. Check out her website at www. nhschulte.com. You can reach her directly at 910-540-9177 nancyschulte@me.com.

“Commission work challenges me. I like to please the buyer but I want it to be my style,” she said. “I’m painting a portrait of Mary and Jesus for someone. I’m also doing some beach people. I did angels during the Christmas season because I broke my wrist and had it casted for six weeks. That was hard! I was delighted to sell a large piece in the Gallery at Howe. People are interested in decorating their homes now.” Schulte loves people and considers painting people her favorite subject. “Being a mother, grandmother and RN have given me many valuable experiences and deep appreciation for

FITNESS The “Best Diet”

Finding The Right Way To Eat For YOU STORY BY BRIAN TULLY, MS

T

he weather is finally turning, the COVID vaccine is rolling out and numbers are declining. We are all longing for those days of being able to get out to enjoy the weather and socialize with friends again. But as we start thinking about those trips to the beach or the pool, we are reminded of our pandemic gluttony we have become accustomed to in these past months. Our next thought is, “YIKES, I don’t want everyone to see all this hibernation weight I put on. I need a diet that will get me results fast.” We head to Google to find the latest and greatest diet. Unfortunately, your search returns numerous options. Where do you begin? Which is the best? Maybe you ask a friend or family member who has recently lost weight. You will certainly hear responses like, “You should try Keto, my husband and I both lost so much weight doing it.” Or “Cut out all sugars, that’s the key.” Or “Plant-based has made me feel amazing, and think of all the animals you will save.”

fore changing the menu, focus on eating slowly and mindfully. Eating Slowly and Mindfully helps to: -Eat less without feeling deprived -Look and feel better (due to improved digestion) -Learn the feeling of actually being

Hungry or Full -Stop the binge eating Want to give this Slow and Mindful way of eating a try? Follow these steps: 1. Sit at a table, with no other distractions. Just you and the food. 2. Look at what you’re about to eat. Notice what you’ve chosen. 3. Take a bite of food. Chew slowly. Notice the scent, taste, texture, and temperature. 4. Put your utensils down. Pause. 5. Take a few deep, slow breaths. Consciously relax your body. 6. Check in: What, if anything, do you sense physically or emotionally? What are you thinking? 7. Take another bite of food. Again, notice the food’s characteristics. 8. Put your utensils down again. Again, take a few deep, slow breaths and relax.

9. Check in again. Notice any physical sensations, emotions, or thoughts that come up. Repeat steps 7 to 9 until your body tells you it’s time to stop. Once you feel like you have nailed this eating habit, you can then focus on what to eat and find the best eating style for you. Notice I didn’t use the word “diet” there. At the end of the day, your best approach will be to look at your goals, needs, and preferences; not some random set of rules from the latest diet craze. The Best Diet for you is the one that meets your nutritional needs, doesn’t leave you feeling deprived, and you can actually stick to long term. If you have any questions or other thoughts to share, I would love to hear from you! Brian@BetterTogetherFitness.com BetterTogetherFitness.com

Most likely their suggestion is based on personal experience. Which is great for them, but probably not great for you. The problem is this approach doesn’t take into account the differences in peoples’ goals, lifestyle, preferences, body type, etc. Honestly, with so many differences, how can anyone expect there to be a one best diet? Personally, I don’t believe in a one best diet, and I would encourage you to do the same. The best approach is a combination of many theoretical diets out there. It is better to focus on fundamental dietary principles that can be universally applied. Focusing on food quality, personal nutritional deficiencies and needs, and controlling quantity of food intake, will provide a better long-term approach. So where to start then? Most people focus on what to eat when trying to get in better shape; but research shows that this is less important than paying attention to how you eat.
