think the three stories we tease on the cover do a great job of pointing out what makes producing this magazine so much fun. In the Seahorse Eats and Drinks feature we get to tell the story of an Oak Island landmark and how the owners have taken lemons and made the proverbial lemonade. The Little Pink Houses of Hope story shows just how huge a heart this community has. The Art Newton story taught me about a Southport figure I’d known nothing about, but now want to learn all I can. You’ve not seen the last of Art Newton in these pages, I have ideas, lots of ideas.

O

n another note, I have the honor of serving our business community for the next year as President of the Southport-Oak Island Chamber of Commerce. I look at all that is headed our way and see lots of opportunity. The resilience of this community has inspired me, and I look forward to helping our local businesses continue to make the most of the growth our future holds, and to welcome even more of our community’s most important resource---people.

Currents Little Pink Houses

Survivors Celebrating Life At The Beach STORY AND PHOTOS BY BETH A. KLAHRE

I

n just a few days, pink feather flags will be flying all around Oak Island! For the eleventh year, twelve families impacted by breast cancer have been invited to attend a week-long all expenses paid retreat on Oak Island. These 50 adults and children will be guests of Little Pink Houses of Hope, a national 501(c)3 nonprofit headquartered in Burlington, North Carolina. Little Pink promotes breast cancer recovery through opportunities for survivors to celebrate life and operates through a belief that a cancer diagnosis affects the entire family. Little Pink Houses was founded by Jeanine Patten-Coble, an 11-year breast cancer survivor who started the organization after noticing the gap in services for families of survivors. Since 2009, retreats have been held at more than 20 locations across the country including Emerald Isle, North Carolina; Key West, Florida; Orange Beach, Alabama; and our own Oak Island. When the retreat week begins, Jody Carroll from St. Louis, Missouri will step in as the retreat director for her second year at Oak Island. As director, she is responsible for coaching and leading the VolunSTARS, a specially-trained group of volunteers. VolunSTARS, also arriving

from across the country just in time for the retreat, are tasked to check in daily with the families and handle issues, needs or concerns. VolunSTARS work together as a team to create a memorable experience for participant families. Team Pink is the crew on the ground that has been preparing for the families arrivals on September 18, 2022. Leading Team Pink are Connie Kelly and Nancy Newcom, who are both back for their second consecutive year, and Marianne Lawruk, who has been on the team since 2017. “Team Pink started brainstorming immediately after the retreat finished last

year. We think about what we could do to help the VolunSTARS and the retreat director run a successful week. And we all just pitch in with the preparations where needed,” said Connie. And there are many preparations. Team Pink has been busy lining up meals and activities for the entire week. That’s 490 meals and seven days of activities. On the activities docket are a day at the beach complete with games and a picnic lunch, kayaking near the Oak Island Recreation Center and stand up paddle boarding sponsored by Ocean Cure from Carolina

Beach. Additional fun activities and excursions are also in the works. As in prior years, the local community has generously stepped up to help. The welcome and farewell dinners will be held at Ocean View United Methodist Church on Oak Island. Team Pink will decorate the church hall with a fun beach theme, where a catered dinner will be served. “The welcome dinner is a chance for the families to meet one another and to get to know the VolunSTARS,” said Mar-

and generous and want to offer hope in any way possible,” she said.

The Southport Woman’s Club is preparing welcome bags for each family filled with a variety of local gifts and beach supplies, including a bracelet for the cancer survivor donated by Boo & Roo’s, and activity and coloring books for the kids. The St. James Quilters are making pillows for the families. The Oak Island Elks Lodge #2769 and Oak Island Recreation Center held fundraisers throughout the past year to benefit Little Pink Houses. Team Pink has organized several community drives to collect beach towels, cleaning supplies and paper products to stock each family’s beach house. Homes for the week are also donated. The Little Pink team in Burlington worked with local real estate agencies including Oak Island Accommodations as well as private owners to find each family an appropriately-sized house for their week. “It’s so rewarding to see it all come together through the generosity of so many people,” added Nancy.

At the farewell dinner on the final evening of the retreat, the families will have a chance to talk about their experience. Many will share what the week has meant them and how it helped them heal and relax. There will be tears and cheers. And bittersweet goodbyes among new-found friends facing common health challenges. “Little Pink gives a special gift to the survivors - time. Time to get away. Time to be with those who are most important to them. It gives them a place to relax and have fun. It makes the intangible tangible,” concludes Connie.

Connie agreed, saying she’s been overwhelmed by the outpouring of community support. “Breast cancer has touched

the lives of literally every person I meet. When someone hears about Little Pink, the first question they ask is how they can help. It reminds me that people are kind

A cool breeze coming off the ocean blows away the humidity, while the sound of the surf creates a rhythmic beat, and the sun setting over the dune grass spreads a warm, rosy glow, giving the place an almost magical feel. And then the music begins. I sip my Prosecco and drink it all in while the melody from an acoustic guitar floats across the open-air deck. Welcome to Seahorse Eats & Drinks and Ocean Crest Fishing Pier, a spectacular setting for live music on Oak Island. Ocean Crest Fishing Pier has been around for a long time, but has evolved over the years to meet the expectations of rapidly growing and diversifying community. In 2021, the pier house underwent some significant changes, including the addition of a grill, a bar, and an outdoor deck for live concerts. Despite the expansion, it retains a feel that is warm, friendly and familiar, much like the family that owns and operates it. One of the few remaining privately operated piers in North Carolina, Ocean Crest Fishing Pier is owned by Nancy Tuck, her son Steve Andrews, and partner Robert Prince. I recently had the pleasure of talking with Nancy and Steve, who I found to be two of the nicest people I’ve ever met, a sentiment echoed by customers, staff and the musicians who play there. “I’ve been playing music for a long, long time, and I’ve always done my best to work with good folks. In my opinion, they don’t come much better than Nancy, Steve, Robert, and all of the good folks at the OCP,” said Cliff Wheeler, leader of the popular Cliff Wheeler Band, a group frequently featured at Seahorse.

owned the pier in Cherry Grove, SC since 1965, was presented with the opportunity to purchase OCFP, which had been struggling since sustaining significant damage from Hurricane Floyd a few years earlier. Andrews, who had a successful career in technology sales and service but was looking to make a change, and his mother, retired from a career in banking, agreed to join him on the adventure. They say it has been a learning process over the years, with challenges ranging from hurricanes to staffing to exorbitant insurance costs, but it’s one they have battled successfully for 20 years. The last few, however, have been particularly tough. During the winter of 2019-2020 the trio

HURRICANE TROUBLE In 2002, Robert Prince, whose family has 6 Southport Magazine/ August 2022 / www.SouthportMag.com

rebuilt about one-third of the pier, damaged from several years of storms and rough surf. Steve said that insurance companies no longer cover commercial piers or over-water structures, so all of the cost is on them. The work was completed right on time for the pier’s spring opening in 2020, but then COVID hit in March, and the pier, along with the rest of the world, was shut down. In late June, the pier reopened with limited capacity, but then Hurricane Isaias came crashing ashore in August and damage to OCFP was extensive. The “T” at the far end of the pier was completely destroyed, its large round pavilion washed away by the storm surge. “The pier was only open for a total of six weeks in 2020,” Steve said, “so you can imagine the difficult financial situation we were in after sinking all that money into repairs.” At that point, the owners had some tough decisions to make. While the “T” and pavilion had been a big draw for serious fishermen and tourists alike, the cost to rebuild was prohibitive.

“There are hardly any family-owned piers left these days, due to the costs associated with ownership and maintenance.” Steve said. “While town-owned piers can self-insure and issue bonds to fund repairs, and can obtain State and Federal funds to rebuild after storms, private owners have to come up with their own funding sources.”

A New Direction These factors weighed heavily on their decision to take a new direction and put their money toward something that had the potential to generate income, which they could then reinvest in ongoing pier maintenance. It was a tough decision, Steve said, knowing they could lose some of the King Mackerel fisherman to the newly rebuilt town pier, but reality necessitated the change. A very clever reconfiguration allowed them to maintain the existing bait and tackle shop while expanding the retail section and adding an ocean-view bar that serves beer, wine, and slushies, and a grill. They also built an oceanside deck that runs the length of the building right up to neighboring Island Way Restaurant. Respectful that the heart of any pier is its fishermen (and women), OCFP remains a full-service fishing operation with a full line of Big Rock bait and tackle, rods and reels, and other fishing equipment. The retail shop carries clothing, hats, sunglasses, and other accessories by brands like Calcutta, Salt Life, Panama Jack, and private label items as well. The grill, which has been open since June of this year, is

currently open for breakfast and lunch, and also serves dinner on concert nights. As word spreads about the concerts at OCFP, a growing crowd make the place hum. A congenial mix of local residents and visitors to the island mingle seamlessly and the atmosphere is family friendly. The long, narrow deck space encourages socializing, while a larger open area around the side allows for dancing as the night heats up! The music is diverse, ranging from R&B to country to classic rock, typically played by a solo acoustic guitar or a duo. Nancy Tuck says they are selective about the acts they book, taking the time to watch demos or see bands perform live at other venues before adding them to their rotation. Steve, who spent much of his early career in sales, seems to have a gift for convincing musicians to

come play at his small island gem. “It’s always a responsive crowd and

Biz Spotlight music halls and theaters,” Cliff Wheeler said. Giving young, up-and-coming artists an opportunity to test their talents in a relaxed setting is one of the best things about this venue, Steve said. He also loves the chance to facilitate introductions to more established musicians who act as mentors to the younger ones. He and Nancy can be found at the Seahorse chatting with customers and musicians on most concert nights. “Miss Nancy has been so warm and inviting and has a wonderful personality. I adore her!” Page said, when asked what she likes about playing at Seahorse.

such a beautiful backdrop to a performance,” says Greg Rowles, a South Carolina sensation who successfully parlayed his win on Star Search to a career in local media and entertainment, but makes time to play at the pier. Greg considers the owners true friends, and supports their efforts to create an intimate venue for local talent. The first gig ever booked at Seahorse was a musician named Chris Cary in April of 2021. Cary, a former Marine and phenomenal musician who plays the violin, fiddle and guitar, has opened for Blake Shelton, Tammy Wynette and Blake Shel-

ton. To see him, now playing with partner Sandy, in a small, intimate setting against the backdrop of our beautiful shoreline, is a real treat. Other popular acts include the Cliff Wheeler Band, an award-winning country-blues group, popular Oak Island locals R&R, and South Carolina artist Kascie Page, a powerhouse singer who has opened for the likes of Ricky Skaggs. For a modest venue, the music scene is big! “The venue is sort of small but that makes it cool, you can interact with the audience better than in some of the larger

By all accounts, Steve, Nancy, and Robert are the heart and soul of this place, and it is easy to see the rapport they have with the musicians, the customers, and the staff at Seahorse Eats and Drinks. Nancy and Steve both expressed their delight in running a business venture that allows them to work with family and friends. “I love that it’s truly a family business, and each member has their own gifts that they bring to work” Nancy says with sincerity. R o b e r t ’s niece Jennifer Price is the Social Media Coo r d i n a t o r, Steve’s niece Leah Andrews tends bar alongside Greg Smith, who worked in sales with Steve in their former lives back in Atlanta. “You can’t beat this work environment!” Smith told me with a big grin. Nancy, an Oak Island resident, is also an art-

ist and teaches an art class on the pier called “Scapes & Grapes.” For a fee of $25, participants get a lesson with all the supplies for either a water color or acrylic painting and a glass of wine. Sounds like a perfect afternoon to me! While the owners of OCFP are proud to have created an Oak Island attraction, they also aim to be good corporate citizens in the community. OCFP runs fishing camps for children in the summer and sponsors tournaments for veterans through the “Operation North State” program. Above all, they value the opportunity to interact with their customers. “We treasure our guests and want to make it a better experience each time they’re here. Make them want to come back, and bring their friends,” Nancy said. So, whether you are waiting for your table next door at Island Way Restaurant, down at the beach to watch the sun set, or looking for a spectacular setting to hear live music outdoors, come join the family gathering at Seahorse Eats & Drinks on the Ocean Crest Fishing Pier. I can’t think of a better place to hear live music at the beach!

Go Jump In The Lake Have Fun, Help A Great Cause, Cool Off STORY BY JEFFREY STITES

ooking for a good way to cool off and help your community in the process? The 13th running of the Go Jump In The Lake 5K and 1.5 Mile Fun Run/Walk might just fit the bill. Organized by the Southport Rotary Club, this family-friendly event promotes health and wellness in our community. As in previous years, most of the proceeds will benefit New Hope Clinic’s charitable healthcare programs, as well as other Rotary funded organizations. Participants are invited to run, walk or roll the route though Boiling Spring Lakes and finish off the journey with a big SPLASH into Spring Lake at the finish line. The event will be held Saturday, Sept. 3 beginning and ending at Spring Lake Park, 210 Pine Road. The race will start at 8:30 am. “This is a fun event that is open to all

ages and skill levels,” said Shawn Braswell, Immediate Past President of the Southport Rotary Club. “There is a timed 5K for the competitive runners looking to improve their time or just a newbie runner. The 1.5 mile Fun Run/Walk that isn’t timed is perfect for those that are just out to have a good time and participate in a healthy event with friends. There are awards for different ages and

there is even a best splash award.” Registration is open now at SouthportRotary.com and event sponsors are also needed with sponsorships starting at a very affordable $50. Entry fees are $20 for the 1.5 mile Fun Run and $33 for the 5K until Aug. 15, when the price increases. Registration includes a finisher medal and race t-shirt.

couch to 5k program, using the fun run/walk as part of their recovery after a surgery, or looking for a chance to meet some other community members who like to be active,” Roberts said. “The more people we have out moving at events like this, the healthier our community becomes!”

New Hope Clinic Executive Director Sheila Roberts said she is thrilled to partner with Southport Rotary on this event. “We love partnering with Rotary to host the Go Jump in the Lake fundraiser that’s also a health-raiser! The funds raised help New Hope Clinic provide much needed healthcare services for our neighbors in need who do not qualify for an insurance program, yet also cannot afford health insurance and healthcare costs. We have an amazing group of volunteers who help us at the Clinic, but there are many expenses we need these funds for including medications, dental equipment, and diabetic testing supplies,” she said.

his life and work, but as soon as I did, I was fascinated. I have a passion for photography and using it to document not only the natural beauty of our area, but the life of our community, and learning of this man who shared that passion, and even started a very short-lived magazine about Southport, made me want to learn all I could about him. So I reached out to Liz Fuller and found out a bit more.

e often take photos of our community and its daily life for granted. Just open up Facebook or Instagram and you’ll find hundreds of beautiful photos of our waterfront and beaches every day. When a hurricane strikes, we immediately have access to hundreds of photographs of the damage and clean-up. This treasure trove of imagery wasn’t always available to everyone with a cell phone, but fortunately, some of those who were locals long before us used art and photography to preserve what is now our history. This month, the Southport Historical Society is hosting a celebration honoring the 100th birthday of Art Newton (1922-1964), whose photography and artwork gives us a snapshot of what everyday life in Southport looked like before it became the tourist destination it is today. “Art Newton was Southport’s first professional artist. He was an accomplished photographer and fine artist who captured scenes of Southport’s waterfront and daily life in the 1950s. He is the reason that we have images of the iconic mid-century period in Southport’s history when it was still a small fishing village,” said Liz Fuller, Southport Historical Society President. Three days of events will honor the life of Art Newton and his contributions to the City of Southport.

Art Newton (1922 – 1964) was born and raised in Southport, graduating from Southport High School. World War II took him away for several years while he served in the Coast Guard. It was while he was in the service that he learned the skills of photography. Following the war, he used the GI Bill to attend art school in Ohio. He then moved to New York City to work as a commercial

Community to find an audience and folded after only one issue. It was just one of many ways that Art Newton was a man ahead of his time.

artist. His career was beginning to take off when he met a beautiful young woman from North Carolina at one of his art shows. Her name was Vallie Lou Bryant. Before long the two were married and starting a family. Neither one could envision raising their children in New York, yet no one in Southport had ever made a living as an artist. Art decided that he would be the first. He vowed he would do whatever he had to in order to give his family the same small town upbringing that he had enjoyed. What was he doing with his photos? Selling them in the shop? Photographing for the Pilot? Doing it for himself? Art opened a camera shop and photography studio on Moore St. where the jewelry store stands today. There he sold camera equipment and developed photos. He also used the shop to give art lessons to local school children. Art worked as a freelance photographer, capturing private and public events. His pictures could be seen in The State Port

Why is he so important to Southport and the record of its history? Art had a love for Southport’s waterfront. He and his family lived on Bay St. in the old Walker-Pyke house where he made a studio in the top floor attic. Many of Art’s paintings reflect the beauty that was right outside his door – the Cape Fear River, and the boats and buildings that lined the hard-working waterfront. Pilot and in Wilmington newspapers. He also designed commercial artwork and billboards for businesses in Wilmington. In addition to photography, he was a fine artist who painted in oils and watercolors. Some of his work was done on commission, painting local businesses and boats. Other works were sold in art shows at the Community Building.

Sometimes Art would hang a collection of work on the tree at the Whittler’s Bench and sell them to whoever walked by. Art never stopped thinking of ways to make a living with his art. He even wrote, designed, and published a magazine about Southport and the Lower Cape Fear. Sadly, the magazine failed

With his camera, Art captured contemporary news events – the aftermath of Hurricane Hazel, the passing of the USS North Carolina on its way to Wilmington, and the arrival of European refugees on Southport’s shores. He even defied the social conventions of the time and crossed over to the predominantly Black, west side of Southport where he took photographs of

We also sell a beautiful coffee-table book of Art’s life story and artwork, called “Southport’s Art Newton.” It was written by Tommy Harrelson. Both Tommy and his sister were students of Art’s when they were little.

Whether he realized it or not at the time, Art’s work is especially valuable because without his photos and paintings, we wouldn’t have images of the iconic mid-century period of Southport’s history when it was still a remote, hard-working fishing village, so very different than the way it is today.

The Historical Society is looking for help from anyone who may have some of Art Newton’s work. “We are currently gathering as much information about Art Newton as we can for our Centennial Celebration at the end of August,” said Fuller. “If any of your readers have memories or family stories of Art Newton we would love to talk to them. We would also be interested in making copies of any photos they have and taking pictures of any artwork. Please email us at info@southporthistoricalsociety.org or call 910-477-3461.”

What are you planning for the materials you collect for these events after the events are over?

Where can people find examples of his artwork (outside of the events you have planned)? There is a permanent exhibit of Art’s work at the Fort Johnston Southport Museum and Visitor Center. Prints of several of Art’s oils and watercolors can be purchased through the Southport Historical Society in the visitor center or on our website www.southporthistoricalsociety.org. Each artwork is custom printed by Ricky Evans of The Ricky Evans Gallery.

Maritime Museum Lecture Series

CONTRIBUTED BY CYNDI BROWN, NC MARITIME MUSEUMS

A

n NC Maritime Museum at Southport lecture originally scheduled to coincide with the start of hurricane season will now be held in August. Jay Barnes, author of the newly released “Fifteen Hurricanes That Changed the Carolinas: Powerful Storms, Climate Change, and What We Do Next,” will be the speaker for the museum’s upcoming Third Tuesday program. The lecture will be held Aug. 16 at 7 pm at the Southport Community Building, 223 E. Bay St. He was previously booked as the June speaker. Barnes’ program, designed for ages 16 and up, is free and open to the public. However, seating is limited, so registration is required. For more information or to register, call (910) 477-5151 or RSVP online at ncmaritimemuseumsouthport.com. The museum’s education curator, Katy Menne, said even without any active hurricanes currently in the Atlantic basin, it’s important to understand the effect hurricanes have had and will have on the state. She said Barnes will combine images, history, and meteorology in the program to

show just that. “Jay is ‘Mr. Hurricane himself,’” Menne said, noting his books on hurricanes are a popular museum gift shop purchase. “His talk will prove to be an eye-opening one, showing the true impact of historic and more recent hurricanes.”

T h e T h i r d Tu e s d a y program originally scheduled for August has now been moved to September. Dr. Andrew Kahrl will present “The Land Was Ours: African American Beaches in a Changing South” on Sept. 19 at 7 pm. Kahrl’s program tells the story of African American-owned beaches in the 20th century South, and how in the wake of the civil rights movement and amid the growing prosperity of the Sunbelt, many African Americans fell victim to effective campaigns to dispossess black landowners of their properties and beaches. For information or to register for any upcoming programs, call 910-477-5151. Reservations can also be made online at ncmaritimemuseumsouthport.com/events.

Showcase Beatles Tribute Band Here, There & Everywhere Plays Benefit STORY BY CARLA EDSTOM

O

n August 13 at 7 pm, four local musicians will perform a musical tribute to a well-known four-piece band from across the pond, all in a fight to stop homelessness. Guitarist John P. Rogers leads this local Fab Four for a not-to-be-missed event at the St. James Community Center. Playing Beatles music is nothing new to John. For three years he played with the Moondogs, a former Wilmington Beatles Tribute Band that performed an annual charity show for juvenile diabetes. Utilizing his talent and his love for the Beatles, he formed this Beatles tribute band from the Southport musicians’ pool. “Since we are all working musicians in several other bands we decided to call it Here There & Everywhere .... like the song,” he said. “We started the project in February of 2022 and plan to put on a yearly charity event that presents an entire

Beatles album plus encore material. “For 2022, we decided to look at Brunswick County charities for our first show. Brunswick Partnership for Housing works to help reduce the problem of homeless-

ness in our county. I played another event for them last year with the band LunaSea, so we decided they were a worthy cause for the Beatles project to support,” John said. The current band lineup includes John on guitar and Vocals, Rick Kranz on drums, Erik Schonher on guitar, keys, and vocals, and Bob Gentile, bass and vocals. John’s love of music and guitar is clearly obvious in his playing. His sound is clean, well-tailored, and professional. Being influenced by all the great guitar players, John’s playing style moves easily between music genres and brings his own sound into

everything. “I’m an Army brat (originally) from Virginia. After dad retired we moved to Texas, so I did high school, college, and a 40-year engineering career in Tex-

Do your feet ache? Do your legs & back hurt? Do you have Planter Fasciitis? COME IN AN TRY THEM! as,” he said. “I have been playing music in one form or another since 1972 when I started playing my mother’s piano by ear. I switched to the guitar in the summer of 1974 and have been playing ever since. I got some experience in several garage bands in the 70s but didn’t do anything serious until after college with a three-piece rock band that played inner-loop clubs in Houston in the 1980s. Globetrotting around the world oilfields with Halliburton put an early end to that project, but I never stopped working on my craft.” John is a well-known guitar player around Southport playing in several bands. “I got serious about music again when I retired and moved to Southport in 2015 and started playing in an acoustic duo with my cousin, Larry Rogers,” he said. The two of them formed The Fishin’ Musicians and were a duo for five years. “I formed a three-piece electric classic rock

band focused on an eclectic mix of Rock and Blues. The current iteration performs as Johnny & The Flipside. In 2020 I formed an unplugged Blues and Jazz duo with Bob Gentile called J&B Bluzz which has been well received. Last year I was asked to join LunaSea Rockers a seven-piece Rock/R&B band that plays benefits and festivals,” he said. “It gets hard to say you are ‘retired’ when you are playing in four bands, but I love it!”

Cheers Summer Sangria

Local Ingredients In A Classic Punch STORY AND PHOTOS BY JEFFREY STITES

A

couple of times in the past few months, Lisa and I have ordered sangria at restaurants. In each case the sangria was a homemade concoction using fruits that were available locally. We absolutely loved these drinks and it finally occurred to me that this didn’t have to be a special, going out for a meal experience. Sangria isn’t hard to make. There was no reason at all for me to not make my own. And I knew I could write about it in a Cheers column so making it would not only be delicious, but also productive! I felt like a genius. Sangria originated in Spain and Portugal and under European Union rules, only products produced there can be called Sangria. But we fought a revolution, and I can call my concoction Sangria if I want, so there. Traditionally, Sangria is a punch made with red wine and fruit, sometimes with a spirit like brandy added to give the punch an extra, well, punch. Not being under EU rules meant I could make my Sangria with white wine instead of red, just because we felt it would make it bit more refreshing in this summer heat. I wanted some guidance

on which wine to use, so I headed off to Uncorked By The Sea and sought expert advice. Donna was working that morning and said that Pinot Grigio and Sauvignon Blanc were both popular choices, but really as long as it was well to the the dry side, you could use whatever you like. She suggested a Portuguese wine called Broadbent Vinho Verde. It was a little bubbly, which she thought would add a little something to the drink. She was right. Never hesitate to go to the local wine shops for advice, because they know their stuff and are invested in you enjoying what you purchase. And just

Fresh peaches at your friendly neighborhood farmers market!

24 Southport Magazine/ August 2022 / www.SouthportMag.com

It all comes from very simple., easy to find, ingredients

because it comes from wine shop and not the shelf at Food Lion doesn’t mean you need to break the bank. This bottle cost me less than $20. The next step was finding fruit. As I mentioned, I make it a Monday morning ritual to go shop for fresh fruits and veggies at the Oak Island Farmers Market, so I just kept an eye out for whatever looked good. I ended up with peaches, plums and blackberries, all in season and as fresh as you could ask for.

You need to let this mix sit a while to let the flavors do their thing. I suppose how long is up to you. I read that a few hours is fine, but life happened and ours sat in the fridge in its Tupperware pitcher for a few days. If

Making the Sangria was a simple as pouring the wine over the fruit. I cut up the plums, peeled and sliced the peaches, and just tossed the blackberries in as they were. I wasn’t sure if the blackberries would do much for the flavor, but I love blackberries and gave them a shot. They did, in fact, work perfectly. CHEERS you have the patience, I really do feel like this is a good thing. Over that time, the fruit really soaked into the wine and left the white wine with a very pretty, very summery, and even a bit classy, pinkish hue. The stuff looked positively refreshing.

And it was. We poured it into a couple of pretty giant wine glasses and fortified it with some of the fruit pieces. It smelled sublime. It tasted like summer. It tasted like summer in all the best ways. It was fresh, sweet but not

too sweet, and went down like a lazy evening on the porch watching fireflies. I don’t feel like its bragging to say that the fruit choice was perfect. We liked our own homemade brew better than any we’d been served in a restaurant. And we got to support a few local small businesses in the process, which just makes it go down that much better. As a bonus, when you make your own Sangria, you get to eat all the fruit you used. I used quite a lot of fruit, probably

more than a professional Sangria maker would recommend, surely enough to displease the EU regulators I’m guessing. But that was what I wanted and I’m an American who can do what he wants with his Sangria and it left us with piles of wine-soaked peaches, plums and blackberries to eat out of our wine glass like an alcohol-infused fruit cup. Cheers to local wine shops, farmers markets, and the freedom to decide for ourselves what Sangria means!

Dosher Food Drive Food Will Support High-Need Areas CONTRIBUTED BY ILENE EVANS, DOSHER HOSPITAL

D

osher Memorial Hospital, in partnership with the Brunswick Wellness Coalition (BWC), hosted a #GiveHealthy drive through food donation event to benefit identified high need areas within Brunswick County. Donors drove up to the hospital front entrance on the morning of Wednesday July 20, and dropped off more than 200 pounds of food and $60 in cash donations. BWC staff will coordinate distribution to local food pantries through South Brunswick PORCH and other non-profit organizations that promote access in nutritious foods. “There is a high need for food pantry supplies during the summer due to pantries compensating for meals children receive at school. We thank everyone who took time out of their day to help fill an urgent need in local food insecure communities and to help recipients get their five daily servings of fruits and vegetables,” said BWC Executive Director, Dr.

Leigh Lane. Dosher President and CEO Lynda Stanley added “This is a community comprised of neighbors who help their fellow neighbors, and that could not have been more apparent than through the extremely thoughtful donors who showed up today. I am touched and very grateful for this outpouring of generosity and caring.”

The Perfect Plants

Storm, Wind, Salt Resistant Plants On Sale STORY CONTRIBUTED

After the drought in May and June and heavy rains in July, many plants in our landscapes have had a tough time. Just in time for fall planting, the Brunswick County Extension Master Gardener Volunteer Association is offering an Online Plant Sale featuring “resilient” plants. These plants are drought-tolerant once established, can withstand some light flooding, and handle winds and storms. The Master Gardeners are featuring six types of native ornamental grasses, eight moderately salt-tolerant shrubs, two perennials that are proven to withstand the worst of our summers, and a hummingbird favorite vine. Visit the website, www.bcmgva.org from Thursday, Sept. 1, through Thursday, Sept. 8, to place and pay for your order. Then pick up your plants in person on Thursday, Sept. 15, from 9 am until 1 pm at the Brunswick County Extension Office, 25 Referendum Drive, greenhouse area behind Building N, at the Government Center in Bolivia. Visit the website for more information on the plants offered. Payment for online orders is through PayPal, Visa, Master Card, American Express, or Discover. During plant pickup on the 15th, a few local businesses will also be offering some unique gardening services and products for purchase at the plant pickup location. For more information or questions, e-mail BCMGVAT@gmail.com. AT RIGHT: THE EXTENSION MASTER GARDENER VOLUNTEER ASSOCIATION OF BRUNSWICK COUNTY WILL BE OFFERING MUHLY GRASSES AND SWITCHGRASSES AT THEIR FALL ONLINE PLANT SALE. PHOTO BY DONNA COULSON

Bingo The Musical Theatre Moves Into The Bingo Hall

STORY CONTRIBUTED BY BRUNSWICK LITTLE THEATRE

T

he most exciting game of Bingo you’ll ever experience makes its Brunswick County debut this August in Brunswick Little Theatre’s production of “Bingo - The Winning Musical.” Who thought that a game of Bingo could produce such hilarity and excitement? To provide the perfect atmosphere, all performances of “Bingo - The Winning Musical” will take place in an actual Bingo Hall at the Oak Island Moose Lodge, 4239 Long Beach Road. It will be an exciting, immersive production from start to finish with the audience playing several games of Bingo and the winners receiving prizes. Performances are August 4-6 and 11-13 at 7:30 pm, and August 7 and 14 at 3 pm. To add to the fun, Brunswick Little Theatre audiences will be able to purchase beer, wine, and cocktails at the performance. The fun new musical comedy has laughs and heart a-plenty. Musical numbers run the gamut from pop ballad, to gospel, to country, to a torch song. The fun begins as Bingo diehards and BFFs Vern (Christie Delbridge), Honey (Vicky Riley) and Patsy (Mary Anne Gilland) brave the worst storm in Hamerin County history to attend the yearly celebration of the birth of Bingo and to honor its founder, Edwin S. Lowe. The severe storm knocks out power at the Bingo Hall where Minnie (Melanie Tewell) and Sam the Bingo

caller (Geoff Gersen) work hard to keep everyone calm and safe. Through flashbacks the audience learns from Patsy and Honey about the disastrous faling out between Vern and her best friend Bernice (Melanie Tewell). Alison (Lucy Tramposch), Bernice’s strong-willed yet sweet daughter, appears at the Bingo Hall in disguise. Knowing her mother’s health is failing, she is determined to use Bingo to reunite her mother with her long-lost friend. Come and get your BINGO on! Tickets are $25 and are available at http://www.brunswicklittletheatre.com or at Ricky Evans Gallery, 211 North Howe Street, Southport.

The Future of History

A New Year For The Civil War Round Table

D

uring the past 12 years, Brunswick Civil War Round Table monthly audiences have been informed, entertained, and fascinated about Civil War actions and events as presented by renowned historians, authors, and college professors. These guest speakers offered unique and interesting topics, always including both North and South points-of-view. Their goal was to attract everyone, from Civil War enthusiasts to those men and women, young and old, who simply want to learn more about this period in our country’s history. This combination of topics and speakers is the main reason this non-profit organization has earned its enviable reputation as “the largest Civil War round table in the country!” The upcoming season of monthly meetings continues that tradition. Tuesday, Sept. 6: “The letters of General Gabriel Wharton and his Wife Nannie: 1863 – 1865.” The 524 letters discovered in an attic candidly discuss life, marriage, slavery, the Confederacy, and the war. Guest presenter is William C. (Jack) Davis, popular Civil War speaker, an award-winning American historian, and author of more than 40 books on the Civil War.

the Civil War. Monday, Oct. 31: Civil War Ladies’ Forum (Sponsored by BCWRT): “Origins and Traditions of Christmas Celebrations in the mid-1800’s,” a PowerPoint presentation on the traditions of Christmas during the Civil War. Guest presenter Betty Vaughn is the author of four award-winning historical novels set in Eastern North Carolina during 1842 – 1868. This is a meeting for women about women, and will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church in Southport. Tuesday, Nov. 1: “Unlike anything that ever floated: The USS Monitor, and the Battle of Hampton Roads.” This presentation takes the USS Monitor from her inception through the dramatic first clash of ironclads at Hampton Roads. Guest presenter is

Tuesday, Oct. 4: “A Tale of Two Artillerymen: Robert Beckham and Justin Dimick at Chancellorsville.” Though on opposing sides, their stories remind us that history is about people, and this takes a closer look at the common threads connecting their stories on the battlefield. Tuesday, Dec. 6: “The Legacy of Appomattox.” Appomattox signaled the end of the war and the beginning of Reconstruction in Virginia. So how did the surrender set the terms for the nation to come back together? Guest presenter Beth Parnicza is the Chief of Education and Visitor Services at Appomattox Court House National Historical Park. Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2023: “Defending the Arteries of Rebellion.” During the Mississippi River’s Civil War operations, the Confederacy continually challenged the North’s control of the Mississippi River valley via innovations; i.e., ironclad warships, joint operations, reintroduction of the ram, and underwater torpedoes. Guest presenter Neil P. Chatelain is a teaching historian, a frequent speaker at conferences, historical groups and museums, and author of books, articles, and prestigious journals. Feb. 7: “Slogging to Richmond: Environmental Influences on the Union Failed Peninsula Campaign, 1862.” Union General George McClellan’s campaign to capture Richmond, Virginia failed. Why? Environmental issues such as weather, disease, animals, terrain, and nutrition all played

significant roles. It’s a different and rather unique insight into how and why battles are won or lost. Guest presenter Judkin Browning is Professor of Environmental History at Appalachian State University. March 7: “The War for the Common Soldier: How Men Thought, Fought, and Survived in Civil War Armies.” Soldiers on both sides faced enormous personal issues to survive – marching, fighting, boredom, idealism, exhaustion, punishment, and being away from their families. Guest presenter Peter Carmichael, Ph.D., is one of the nation’s foremost authorities on the American Civil War, and is now an American historian and Director of the Civil War Institute at Gettysburg College. April 4: “Grant’s Next Chapter: Vicksburg, Chattanooga, and the Rise of Ulysses S. Grant.” Grant finished one volume of his memoirs after Vicksburg, and began the second volume with Chattanooga which became the turning point of his career. Guest presenter: Chris Mackowski, Ph.D., is the editor-in-chief and co-founder of Emerging Civil War, a prolific award-winning author, and serves on the Board for the Central Virginia Battlefield Trust and the Civil War Roundtable Congress.

ART BEAT

Inspired By Nature Anne McElroy Paints Where She Lives STO RY BY CARLA EDSTROM

M

any artists who move to the coast are inspired to capture an honest portrayal of everyday life living by the beach. And there is so much to be inspired by! The beach, the wildlife, and the southern charm intoxicate us all. “I look to nature for inspiration. The ocean, sunsets, and sunrises, flowers, animals, the woodlands in the back of my house, the marsh-all just a short walk away. All beautifully inspirational,” said Anne McElroy, a local artist. “The beauty of the water has inspired me to paint seascapes and other water scenes that I now love doing,” she said. A native of New York, McElroy has lived in Winding River for the past five years with her husband Chris. Her passion for painting came at an early age. Although she attended the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City, she worked in Civil Service for 35 years. “I found my love of painting at the age of seven, when my mother’s best friend started teaching oil painting classes in the basement of

her home for all the neighborhood kids,” she said. “Once a week, for a couple of hours, on and off, up to and through my high school years, I would attend these wonderful, great classes learning all the basics of painting-drawing, mixing paints to get just that perfect desired color, light and shadow, perception, and the importance of values.” Retirement life for McElroy means

lots of painting. “Most mornings I’m up at five and, with tea in hand, painting in my home studio with the windows wide open. Occasionally I’ll walk to the River House and Marina in Winding River and paint the morning away in a large screened-in porch overlooking the marsh and Lockwood Folly River. Being surrounded by the peaceful awakening of the morning makes it a joy to paint there. Since joining The Joseph Bardani Artists Studio in Southport, I divide my painting among the three of these locations,” said McElroy. “Seeing all the wonderful artwork in the galleries in the area simply inspires me to go paint. I never get tired of looking at art. Looking at a piece of art and seeing how a painter accomplished it, to me, is a wonderful thing and something I never get tired of doing,” she said. “Walking on Holden Beach, which I love to do, made me realize how much I love the ocean.

Being in the wonderful town of Southport a few days each week gives me the desire to paint parts of the town I enjoy the most.” Her dedication to being a better artist and capturing the beauty of nature is evident in her paintings. The emotion in the sea birds she paints is palpable, as well as the power of fierce ocean waves. “My most recent painting of a marsh sunset is one of my favorites to date simply because of my use of colors and contrast. I feel the clouds and marsh come together to make a beautiful composition of a wonderful scene,” she said. “I have also found through experimentation with fluid painting techniques that I really like painting turtles and birds. I have in the past and continue to paint native birds of the area. Through some of my latest paintings that I have done of birds, I’ve realized that I have a unique way I can put to canvas their individual personalities which seems to come naturally to me,” she said. “Realism dominates the style of my work and I take pleasure in painting the many scenes of this beautiful area that is Coastal Carolina. As I am always looking to improve and expand my creativity and skills as an artist, I routinely collaborate with my fellow artisans and instructors alike,” she said. “I look at my finished pieces of art and always think and say to myself I can do

better. And I usually do better. I always learn something from every painting that I work on. This makes me look forward to every new painting I start because I continue to build on what I’ve learned and continue to visually create better works of art.” You can find McElroy’s work for pur-

chase at The Joseph Bardani Gallery Artists Studio, Franklin Square Gallery, and The Artisans Gallery on Howe, all in Southport. “I’ve been successful in selling many of my paintings and delight in the thought that others love them as much as I loved painting them.”
