e hadn’t lived here long when “I Know What You Did Last Summer” hit theaters. We’d been aware that it was being filmed locally, even that they staged a mock 4th of July parade for it, but it didn’t hit home what that meant until we went to see the film at Surf Cinema. The movie was repeatedly greeted with calls of “Hey! There’s my mom!” and “There we are!” That film was supposed to take place in California, but as soon as they cut away from an opening shot of a car driving along a seaside cliff, there was our very own Southport in all her glory. Now that we’ve lived here for decades, we kind of take seeing our home on the big screen for granted, but we also can’t resist stopping to watch the film crews in action. Well, as you know if you’ve watched, there is very little actual “action” involved. Lots of hurry up and wait. It’s still fun to watch, and maybe spot a celebrity. A large part of this issue is dedicated to Southport as film location, and we also profile a local filmmaker trying to expand our community’s role beyond that of set piece. We hope you enjoy our little quirky take on Southport on Film.

Own a Piece of History Preservationists and architectural aficionados will delight in this easily recognizable Federal or Adam Style home built in the early 1800s. Originally built by Benjamin Blaney, a carpenter from Massachusetts for NC Gov. Benjamin Smith (1810-11) as his summer residence. Local craftsmen and materials were sought out and the home has incorporated the iconic Southport Bow signature trim over the high windows. Elegant plaster crown moldings line the tall ceilings and the secondfloor rotunda is reached by the curved staircase. Harvested century-old heart pine floors tell the tales of notable guests from its use as The Brunswick Inn. The home boasts nine fireplaces, Fleur De Lis stained glass transoms, and a sweeping front porch that welcomes you into the first level.

Adjacent to the open foyer are the parlor and library. The sophisticated dining room’s glorious feature is its two-story hanging crystal chandelier. The second story will host three sleeping quarters with private bathrooms for each. Here you will also find the observatory. Meander down to the finished basement area which has three private entrances from the exterior. This space has been conditioned for a recreation room or extra storage. It has been said to have hosted many ballroom soirées. Meticulously renovated, the current owner kept in the true style of the times and has updated with modern conveniences. The kitchen has been completely redone with crisp white shaker-style cabinets. Sparkling new appliances along with a Portuguese hand-painted tile panel in indigo blue. Each room has been elegantly designed with stunning furnishings and art that is picture-perfect for anyone with refined tastes. Spend your evenings on the front porch being enchanted by this historical gem in the small coastal town of Southport.

Architect Chosen

Up Your Arts Takes A Big Step Toward RePurposing Of Southport’s Old City Hall CONTRIBUTED BY BONNIE BRAY, UP YOUR ARTS

U

p Your Arts is pleased to announce it has entered into a contract with David Lisle of Lisle Architecture and Design to provide a full range of architectural services for the “Save the Hall, Y’all” project to re-adapt Southport’s former city hall/old Brunswick County Courthouse building on Moore Street into a stateof-the-art community-based creative and performing arts center. Originally constructed in the mid 1800s, the building served as the county courthouse until the county seat was relocated to Bolivia in the late 1970s. The building served as Southport’s city hall from 1979 until 2014, when administrative operations were moved to the current location on Howe Street. It has been vacant for several years and is still owned by the city. Although there are significant issues with a mold infesta-

tion throughout the building, a feasibility study conducted by Up Your Arts in 2020 revealed the existing structure is reasonably suited to an adaptive re-use. Up Your Arts was founded in 2017 to support and enhance the creative and performing arts throughout the greater Southport area. Board member John Keiffer reports the non-profit organization is inspired by the building’s histo-

ry and its standing in the community, both for its prominent downtown location and for its status as a center of municipal and civic life. Although public access to the building is currently prohibited, a full-color 3D virtual tour is available on the groups’ website, https://upyourarts.org. Up Your Arts began meeting with officials with the City of Southport in 2019 to discuss possible re-uses of the old city hall building. In keeping with terms outlined in a second memorandum of understanding with the Southport Board of Aldermen in 2020, UYA board members began searching several months ago for an appropriate architectural firm. They identified several local and established firms with expertise in commercial re-adaption of historic, civic structures. The board also sought to contract with a firm that had indepth knowledge of Southport and its unique character and historic roots. Specific criteria considered for selecting and procuring architectural ser-

vices included: • Experience with historic/older existing structures • Proven ability to work flexibly with a non-profit organization/ municipal partner • In-depth appreciation for community-based performing and creative arts spaces • Ability to combine a

creative design process with a cost-focused structural approach • Ability to lead a design team that would encompass structural and mechanical engineering, acoustical engineering, sound and lighting system design, historic preservation and restoration, the commercial kitchen/culinary arts components, a graphics design component, and the selection of various types of interior furnishings Obtaining interviews and commitments from businesses during the ongoing pandemic proved very challenging. The UYA board was fortunate to have

spoken with several firms who met the identified criteria. Owing to David’s availability, professionalism and enthusiasm for the art center project, a decision was made to move forward with him and a formal contract was signed February 7. David has offices in the historic district of downtown Wilmington, as well as in Raleigh, and works in both the commercial and residential arenas. He has served as president of the Wilmington AIA, and was a board member of the Historic Wilmington Foundation. Of local note, David was involved with the redesign and conversion of the old BB&T Bank building at the corner of Howe and Moore Streets into what is now the Southport Market. Over the last 24 years Lisle Architecture and Design has been responsible for more than 1,800 unique architectural projects and has an ongoing interest in the historic Brooklyn Arts District in downtown Wilmington, including design of the recently opened Edward Teach Brewing Company.

Up Your Arts will continue the process of converting program ideas and visions for a community-based arts center into concrete architectural expression. Lisle Architecture and Design will assist with defining and prioritizing all aspects of program development and with evaluating the requirements for engineering and hazardous material remediation services. The firm will then prepare a series of architectural renderings and drawings, specifications, and a proposed re-construction budget. In order to further refine the vision and usage of the building, Up Your Arts will continue grassroots outreach efforts. This will include community-wide presentation and feedback events, social media presentations, smaller focus and discussion groups held throughout the area in a variety of venues and formats, and ongoing conversations with municipal leaders. As it has since beginning the project, Up Your Arts will continue to cover all pre-construction expenses related to the proposed arts center.

his year’s North Carolina Fourth of July Festival is shaping up to be bigger and better than ever. The 2020 Festival was a virtual event due to COVID, and last year’s lacked a parade and firefighters competition, but offered expanded activities on Oak Island. This year, the old favorites are back, like the firefighters competition, parade, Franklin Square Park arts and craft vendors, and 4th of July fireworks on the Southport waterfront. They will be joined by some of last year’s most popular activities based in the Town of Oak Island, such as arts and craft vendors in Oak Island’s Middleton Park and the Cape Fear Cruisers Car and Truck Show at Bill Smith Park, as well as a few brand new events. This year’s Welcoming Ceremonies will be June 30th, followed on July 1 with Oak Island’s Beach Day, featuring a variety of entertainment and beach-related competitions, including the brand new Kayak and SUP (stand-up paddleboard) Parade, and culminating with fireworks on the Oak Island Pier. For July 2-4, Southport will host such patriotic favorites as the Veterans

Recognition Ceremony, Flag Retirement Ceremony, Flag Raising Ceremony, and new in 2022, a military and first responder equipment exhibition. The parade will march down Howe Street on the 4th and the celebration will conclude with fireworks on the Southport waterfront. This year’s entertainment events will be

CURRENTS to music and dance. Interested performers or groups are asked to contact Up Your Arts’ Bonnie Bray at bbray@upyourarts. org. It takes a lot of community support to pull off an event the size of the NC 4th of July Festival, and sponsors are a huge part of that. “The 2022 festival is already shaping up to be a fun-filled event that promises to bring in thousands of visitors to the area, but we can’t do it without community support,” said Randy Jones, chair of the NC 4th of July Festival. “Sponsors are vital to the ongoing success of the Fourth of July Festival. With the last two years of pandemic concerns, we need community support now more than ever. We have several new things planned for 2022 and need to raise the funds to support free access to all festival goers.” Sponsorship packages range from Pre-

senting Sponsor to Individual or Family Sparkler. The sponsorship packages are designed so that everyone can participate in helping the festival continue to provide an amazing Independence Day celebration. In addition to publicity before, during and after the festival, some of the packages include signage on the festival grounds and VIP passes. Junk In The Trunk

Find Some Treasures And Do Some Good STORY AND PHOTOS CONTRIBUTED BY CAROLYN BOWERS

W

ho doesn’t love discovering something they really want to have at a price lower than they ever expected to pay? If that sounds good to you, check out the Southport Chapter of the Philanthropic Educational Organization’s upcoming “Junk in the Trunk” sale on Saturday, April 9, from 9 am to noon at the Brunswick Community College Southport Center parking lot, 701 N. Lord Street. Southport P.E.O. Chapter CB held its first Junk in the Trunk sale in 2019, and intended to have it be an annual event, but COVID ruined that idea. So we are delighted to finally be sponsoring our second sale, nearly three years later. Of course the delay only means that we have been cleaning out our attics, basements, cupboards, closets, and drawers for that much more time, and have found that many more items for the sale. There will be at least 12 trunks loaded with pottery, china, glassware, household items, jewelry, lamps, dolls, games, puzzles, purses, linens, books, holiday decorations, and much more. In addition to these traditional junk sale items, this year we have some extraordinary deals for you on some definitely out-of-the-ordinary things as well. Things like a Zoomba robot vacuum, a Sears Kenmore sewing machine, a crystal pitcher that was turned into a lamp, two wooden porch rockers, a fully-loaded picnic basket, and a sound bar to amplify your TV, all at bargain prices. All sales are

cash or check only; no credit cards. It’s the element of surprise that makes these events so much fun. At our last sale, one woman bought an accordion, immediately took it out of the case, and entertained us all until it was closing time. Besides getting some good bargains, you will be supporting P.E.O., a nonprofit international organization of women whose mission is to promote women’s education by awarding grants and providing loans for deserving adults of all ages and in all fields of study. CURRENTS Bringing Film Home Filmmaker Sheena Vaught’s Storytelling STORY BY PATTY LANGER

T

he first thing you notice about Sheena is her infectious smile, which makes you feel happy. The second thing you notice is her gracious demeanor, which makes you feel as if you are supposed to be there, which was good since my presence on the set was clearly not scripted. I was there to watch a live taping of “Coffee With the Girls,” a web-based talk show created and produced by local filmmaker Sheena Vaught. A woman with the talent, intelligence and determination to forge her own path to a successful film production career right here in Brunswick County, Vaught deserves to be in the spotlight herself.

Sheena says she drew her inspiration for “Coffee With the Girls” from the long-running TV talk show “Hollywood Reporter.” She loved the concept of guests talking around a big table, and believed the format would suit her own vision of telling stories about everyday women who have overcome hardships by leaning on their Christian faith. “I want women whose stories are real and raw. Whose stories of struggles and successes can inspire other women to follow their hearts,” Sheena said. Sheena has been following her own

heart since a young age. Reared in a creative environment – her father is a graphic design artist and her mother is a high school art teacher — Sheena has creativity in her DNA. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Film Studies from UNCW, but after a short stint as an intern with a large production company in Los Angeles, she realized her true aspirations were to be on the set in a hands-on role. She also realized that she had left her heart in North Carolina. She returned home to attend Cape Fear Community College, earning a techni-

cal degree in film production that led to placements as a production coordinator and, eventually, a script supervisor in the Wilmington film market. “I learned about all aspects of film production from a wonderful mentor named Nina Rogan, who encouraged me to become a script supervisor,” she said. Ms. Rogan was herself a veteran script supervisor who worked on hit movies like “The Thomas Crown Affair” and “The Crown.” Sheena went on to procure roles as script supervisor on films including “Adrenaline,” staring John Schneider of “Dukes of Hazzard” fame,

and BET’s “Frat Brothers.” But just as her career was taking off, the Wilmington film industry was crashing down. Undeterred, Sheena formed a company called ARIMUSE Productions in 2011 and began to produce her own television and film content. Gradually, she built an impressive array of studio equipment, including cameras, lighting, a sound recording system, and sophisticated editing software. Her productions are professional in every way, right down to the catered luncheons and swag bags for her guests. Sheena is not only the creator of “Coffee With the Girls.” On most days she handles it all: lights, camera, and action! For now, she performs the pre- and post-production as well. Her sister, Shanta Vaught-Johnson, helps direct the episodes and there is also a stylist for hair and makeup. “Prior to this year, I had more help, but with the pandemic, I had had to eliminate several roles,” Sheena said. Currently she has one intern from UNCW lined up to do some editing work this summer. If all goes well, she plans to build her crew with more interns and paid staff over the next few years. Like many rising artists, Vaught works a day job to support herself while growing her business. All of her writing and production is done on nights and weekends. Determined to make her mark

CURRENTS Megan Daniielle, owner of Wilmington-based “Make It Public,” a marketing and public relations firm, and co-owner of Fruition Magazine. Sheena encourages her guests to promote their businesses on her show, believing strongly in the power of women helping women. Daniielle’s story is compelling, having overcome many personal and business challenges that ultimately led to her current success. Unsure at first just how much to share, Daniielle eventually laid it all on the table as she realized the show’s potential to reach others who could benefit from hearing her story. Both Sheena and her host, Mooney Coleman, have a way of making their guests relax and forget about the cameras. As the coffee flows, so does the conversation, fluctuating from personal revelations to professional advice. By the end of the talk, it’s hard to believe these women have just met. Credit goes to Ms. Vaught’s insightfulness. “She is amazing! Amazing! It’s all her,” Mooney gushed about Sheena’s talent for coming up with questions and talking points that allow the epi-

sodes to develop naturally. “I truly respect and support her vision for the show – making it easy to be the best host I can be!” While Sheena relishes the success of her talk show, her true passion is for writing and directing narrative script, particularly Christian stories that provide a wholesome alternative to provocative TV shows. She has produced several short films, including “The Fervent” in 2016 and “Convicted” in 2019. Last year she completed a touching documentary released on the 20th anniversary of 9/11 called “Where Was I; A 9/11 Project.” Currently, she is working on a documentary entitled “God in My Fingers” about NC artist Ivey Hayes. “Magnolia Network, that’s what I pray for,”

she says when asked what her dream avenue would be. The up-and-coming network, owned by Chip and Joanna Gaines of HGTV fame, seems like a perfect fit. The stars are open about the importance of faith in everything they do. Sheena is not interested in living the Hollywood life, though. She is determined to make her mark right here in Brunswick County, and with the burgeoning growth of Wilmington’s film industry drawing attention to this area, it seems like her faith is steering her in the right direction. “I love it here and I want to stay here. And I want to inspire other people in this area to pursue careers in film and production right here at home,” she said. In fact, her conviction is so strong that she named her own creative enterprise “Tower 5 Media” as a tribute to the five beaches of Brunswick County. Season Four of “Coffee With the Girls” will air on Facebook the third week of April, 2022. To learn more about Sheena’s film work check out her website: www.sheenavaugt.com.

Local Film Festival Brunswick Arts Council Brings Film To June Solstice By The Sea Festival

P

lans are in the works for Brunswick County’s first ever Film Festival, to be held in conjunction with with the Brunswick Arts Council’s Solstice By The Sea Festival. According or Art Council board member and local film maker, Sheena Vaught, family-friendly films of five minutes or less will be submitted for judging and prizes. Details are still being worked out, but the plan is for films to be shown at Southport’s Amuzu Theatre on Sunday, June 19, the day after the Solstice By The Sea Festival in Oak Island’s Middleton Park.

No matter if you don’t have a Hollywood-style movie camera set-up, said Vaught. “As long as they tell a story that’s clearly conveyed to the audience, and they are family friendly, then any medium can be used.” In a world filled with YouTube videos and Instagram stories, what sets a true film apart from a video, no matter the media used to create the project? “For video work, it’s mostly collected shots placed together,” explained Vaught. “A film tells a story through the use of camera, acting, and a written script. There’s a lot of variables that go into making a film. I always have to tell people a videographer and filmmaker are two different things. A videographer is hired to shoot an event and will edit together a final compilation. \For the videographer, all the elements of filming are set up outside of their control. In filmmaking, the filmmaker sets up everything in order to create the world that was written on paper, from securing locations, acquiring insurance, hiring the right department heads, managing the crew. It’s more moving pieces to being a filmmaker.”

Vaught said the idea for the Solstice By The Sea Film Festival came from discussions with Mary Beth Livers, executive Director of the Brunswick Arts Council. “I always wanted to start a film festival in the county, so when she suggested having an exhibition part of Solstice it just seemed the right time to get the ball rolling,” Vaught said. And she has high hopes for the future as well. “I’d hope Solstice can become something like a SXSW, where it celebrates the arts and can be an even longer event that encourages education and forums and panels and innovation within the arts,” she said.

Capturing Our Local Movie Locations STORY BY JEFFREY AND LISA STITES, PHOTOS BY MICHELLE BRIDGES, COHLIE BYNUM, KATIE DORSETT-DYE, NICK NOBLE, KAREN SPHAR, LISA AND JEFFREY STITES

A

little more than a year ago, I bought an antique camera at The Painted Mermaid thinking it would make a terrific piece of office decor. When I got it home and started looking at it, I saw that it was a fairly simple machine and that all the parts needed to make a photograph, basically just the aperture and shutter, looked like they were working fine. Long story short, that led to me shooting a roll of black and white film with a camera for the first time in decades. And I was hooked. Since then, I’ve accumulated a small collection of old cameras ranging from 100 to 50 years old. Some of these are small enough that I’ve gotten in the habit of dropping one in the camera bag when I go off to shoot things for Southport and Leland Magazines. One day, I ran across film crews working on Mel Gibson’s “Boys of Summer” down by the Garrison House and stayed to watch and take some photos. I love a pun, so it amused me to be shooting a film shoot on film. Then a lightbulb wen on in my head. Because I can’t let a good pun go, I thought it’d fun to gather a collection of film photos of Southport’s many filming locations. As I mulled it over, the idea grew into a project. I thought it’d be fun to recruit some of our community’s photographers and see how each of them approached the same subject. Since not many people still have operating film cameras, and as an added twist, I’d give them the camera to work with— the newly released black and white disposable camera that Kodak had just released. This idea stayed in my head because I’m my own worst critic and I thought it wouldn’t look nearly as cool outside my own head. One day I did blurt the idea out to Lisa who immediately got as excited about it as I was and began thinking of who we’d ask to participate. We settled on four local photographer friends with a variety of experience and invited them to lunch to share the idea. They embraced it

and one even suggested a teenager she had been mentoring to add to the mix. We handed out the cameras along with the brochure produced by the City of Southport (available in the Visitors Center at the Garrison House) that outlines walking tour of film locations. Southport has been the home of some very successful, and some less successful, Hollywood movie and television shoots since at least the late 80s. It’s a great town that takes well to the role of quaint seaside village. Locals and visitors alike enjoy turning movie production into a spectator sport, and the film crews understand and are very kind to the gawkers. But we were interested in past productions, so with brochures in hand, our happy band set out over the course of a month and captured the images on the following pages. You’ll also find short bios of our volunteer photographers, Michelle Bridges, Cohlie Bynum, Katie Dye, Nick Noble and Karen Sphar. Please support these folks by following them on social media, they are all great talents and do a wonderful job of capturing the beauty of our community. And they are all incredibly good sports. I am indebted to them for helping make this project a reality. We hope you enjoy these looks into Southport’s filmmaking history, and that you head out yourself, brochure in hand, to see for yourself what Hollywood location scouts discovered.

At top is the crew assembling a camera boom. Below is a station wagon ready to have a camera installed on its door and a look at some costumes. The Ivan’s sign at American Fish Company attracted almost all of us. The filming of “Safe Haven” was one of those community events that you just needed to experience to understand. The stars (and their spouses) hung out with the locals, they shot almost the entire film in town, and in the end, the town in the film really looked just like Southport in real life. We found it fun to see how different photographers shot the exact same thing, like this sign, and as you’ll see later, the Old Jail. We have different perspectives, due to being different physical sizes of course, but also due to having different ideas of what looks best. But sometimes, it can look almost like the same photo even though it was created on different days by different people. Cohlie Bynum

The photos on these two pages were all captured by our youngest photographer, Cohlie Bynum. Katie Dorsett-Dye recruited Cohlie onto our team and we were all amazed at her skill. Cohlie was born after the digital revolution and had never used a film camera before. She’d never had to wind a camera to get to the next frame. She’d never had to wait weeks to see how her photos turned out. She embraced the new (or old, I guess) with enthusiasm and spirit and we are looking forward to working with her again. Karen Sphar, the home used in the filming of “Crimes of the Heart”

My name is Karen Sphar and I have been with the Southport-Oak Island Area Chamber of Commerce since 1988. Photographing people and activities at Chamber events is part of my position, but I never ventured off the auto setting on the camera until a Christmas gift in 2020, a Nikon D5600. I’m enjoying the manual control of a camera and learning from all sorts of resources about photography. My love is wildlife, birds and landscape photography. I loved the black and white disposable camera challenge. With only 27 shots I was forced to slow down my thoughts about how angles and shadows made for a unique composition. My biggest challenge was the idea that I could get close to my subject, because in wildlife and bird photography zoom lenses are your friend and if I got that close, they would fly off or eat me. You can find my photos on my own Facebook page and local groups.

This collection wouldn’t be complete without a theatre, and heres’ the Amuzu, featured in “I Know What You Did Last Summer” and “Secret Life Of Bess” Photo by Jeffrey Stites

I am Lisa Stites, Town Clerk for Oak Island, and very part-time assistant to Jeffrey. I love photography, though Jeffrey is determined to make me stop using the auto settings. When Jeffrey asked me what I thought about doing this photography project, he wasn’t sure if it was a good idea. I loved it. We have a lot of talented photographers in our area, an area with beautiful backdrops that literally look like the movie sets they sometimes are. I loved the idea of giving everyone the same medium, which is very different from what we’ve all grown used to with digital cameras and phones, and sending them out with a list of locations but no other real instructions. Jeffrey and I went out together to take our photos, of course. He’s a foot taller than me, so even if we take the same picture from the same spot, it’s really not the same picture. I will generally talk to anyone about anything, and we met people at more than one of our locations. At the Crimes of the Heart house, we met some couples in town for the marathon on Oak Island that weekend. They had already been visiting some of the area watering holes, wanted to know if we were going to buy the house we were photographing, asked us about our project, and then giggled their way down to American Fish. We also met a couple who were friends of a long-time resident of the Brunswick Inn house, and we got to hear stories about the history of the home. We had a great couple of outings, looking at our favorite fishing village through a new lens, and we hope you enjoy our little project. ART BEAT

Digging Up The Past Musician and Producer Ricky Ottoway STORY BY CARLA EDSTROM

M

ost people don’t realize the amount of blood, sweat, and tears that goes into songwriting and producing good music. From writing the lyrics to finding that perfect hook, songwriting can be a very personal journey. And putting all the pieces together beautifully in the studio is another painstaking process altogether. After taking a long 25-year hiatus, I somehow found myself in a recording studio again in 2020, which is no less than a dream come true for me. I have also been blessed to work with not only the best local musicians and producers, but I’ve met some great songwriters. One of those amazing artists is Ricky Ottaway from Oak Island.

Last month I spent some time with Ricky at Creation Station Studios when he was finishing up some editing on his latest project. I got a sneak peek into his latest EP which is coming out this Spring. I soon realized that not only is he one of the nicest people you will ever meet, but he is a truly gifted songwriter. I have listened to his first three projects that he has completed in-depth, and I really connected with his writing and progression from one project to another. His music is some-

times raw and exposed, but always relatable, and brutally honest. At times, I felt like he was singing about my life, wrapped in a thick Southern charm. I could not only relate to his music, but I was also inspired to keep writing. Starting with his first guitar as a child, Ricky is now a seasoned songwriter. “My grandfather offered three boys, myself included, a choice between a pony and a fender electric guitar,” said Ricky. “My mom’s background as a sharecropper’s daughter from South Carolina knew all about the upkeep of a pony. She chose the guitar for us.” And the rest is history. Like most artists, Ricky’s musical passions were set aside for years while he worked hard and raised a family. “Playing with several bands and people along the way aided in a better understanding of the guitar and other instruments,” he said. “I loved good literature while in high school, which helped me formulate songs in my twenties. And those songs stayed hidden in a folder for 30 years,” he explained. “About four years ago, my friend Marty Wozniak started up a recording studio and after listening to a cassette of that 30-year-old music, he insisted on recording them.

46 Southport Magazine/ April 2022 / www.SouthportMag.com

An album and two EPs have been the result of a wonderful, excruciating, blissful, terrifying, amazing, and humbling experience. I am forever grateful to Marty for unlocking those songs and the development of new ones,” he said. “We are preparing the third EP and it should be ready by May or June.” People have their own style and method of creating music. Sometimes they hear a melody and can fit the lyrics to the music. Others will read a poem and just hear the melodies. Either way, it is an amazing process. “Both ways of approach have worked for me,” said Ricky. “Whatever comes to mind and heart, I follow. A jingle or collection of chord phrases appears from my subconscious somehow. I don’t understand why the music comes; however, I know God put it in there and sometimes I listen. Sometimes I listen badly, and the song gets too complicated and that’s where friends are a great asset and I let them critique it. The music sets the mood, and the lyrics follow. Sometimes it’s from the past and other times it is something imagined. The songs get better when the critics are truly helping, and the song evolves.” Ricky’s writing is influenced by many different artists and genres while not being defined by any of them. Sometimes his country roots shine through and other times his growly rock voice is a force. His songs openly talk about his faith, family, and human struggle. “I believe a song with multiple key changes and chord variations has more to offer. Great singers like

Otis Redding and Adele expose the soul of a song while guitarists like Eric Clapton and James Taylor shape the mood of songs. There are too many who have influenced me to count as they all bring something special,” he said. “My writing focuses on good life and good stories. A bad past is to improve upon, not to focus on. This attitude has served me well the last couple of years.” Ricky’s current music can be heard and downloaded on www.Rickyottaway.com. Currently, he plays with the popular local band The Cruise Brothers who play all over Wilmington and Brunswick County. Stay tuned to his website for his latest EP coming soon. You won’t want to miss it.

Civil War Prison Camps and Escapes STORY AND PHOTOS CONTRIBUTED

M i st y F l o at o r Fr e e z e

rom 1861 to 1865, more than 150 prison camps were established by the Union and Confederate governments. While estimates vary widely as to the number of prisoners taken on both sides, the Official Records of the war cites a total of 347,000 men endured the hardships of being prisoners of war. What these detainees suffered and the options they had for escaping is what is discussed at the Tuesday, April 5th meeting of the Brunswick Civil War Round Table. The guest speaker is Angela Zombek, Ph.D., and her presentation is entitled, “…the Duty of the Prisoner to Escape…”: POWs’ Escape Attempts, Plots, and Ideological Flight.” As in all wars, the victors tend to write the history, and the prisoners have become notorious for a litany of horrors. But the simple truth is that neither side was prepared to accommodate the large number of prisoners taken during the war, which many believed would be of short duration, yet dragged on for four years of incredible misery. Once Union and Confederate soldiers were captured, their opportunity to prove valor on the battlefield ceased. Instead, prisoners of war with-

stood unsanitary conditions, rampaging disease, inadequate shelter and clothing, outright starvation, boredom, threats of harsh punishment for disobedience, swarming vermin, and the psychological stigma of imprisonment. They could, however, fight against the enemy and for freedom by attempting to escape through various means. General Order No. 100 (the Lieber Code, 1863) did not consider POW escape attempts to be a crime, and the breakdown of the Dix-Hill Ex-

Some prisoners broke free through mass escape attempts, tunneling, and individual ingenuity at prisons like Camp Chase, Johnson’s Island, the Ohio Penitentiary, Libby Prison, Salisbury Prison, Andersonville, Fort Taylor, and Fort Jefferson. Those who remained in prison, however, sought solace through religion to withstand captivity. More than 49,000 prisoners died in captivity, at least 26,440 Confederate and 22,580 Union, an overall mortality rate of 14 percent. Twelve percent of Confederate prisoners and 18 percent of Union captives never returned from incarceration. A Dunes Adventure

Mercantile And Guitar Bar Turns Three STORY BY JACKIE DELPRETE, PHOTOS BY DENNY DELPRETE

A

t Dunes Mercantile Gifts & Guitars, we are celebrating three years of business this April and what an adventure it has been! When my husband, Denny Del Prete, purchased Dunes Mercantile in 2019, he did so because he was looking for something to keep him busy in retirement. Not that being the drummer for local band, Dave’s Not Home, and his many stained glass projects didn’t keep him busy enough, but he missed the daily interaction with the public that he enjoyed in his past advertising sales positions. As the saying goes…Be careful what you wish for! Dunes Mercantile Gifts & Guitars has far exceeded whatever vision he and I both had when he decided to take on this newest adventure in our life. Transitioning from what was previously primarily a consignment store into a fullfledged gift store and guitar shop happened more by accident than by planning. We love the hunt of finding new products and selecting items that are unique for this area and providing our customers with a

fun adventure by exploring all that Dunes Mercantile Gifts & Guitars has to offer. Having both been involved in the arts in our lives, we love supporting the local artist scene by featuring over 25 artists’ pottery, paintings, wood designs, pine needle artwork, shell designs, ornaments and of

course stained glass by Denny. “When customers first come in the store, they usually remark about how good the store smells,” Denny said. “We have some great candle lines that give us that effect. The next words are somewhere between ‘wow’ and ‘I had no idea you had so much beautiful merchandise!’ One circle around the store is never enough. It usually takes them second trip to absorb everything.”

We estimate that 85 percent of our business is from local customers that return often and also bring family members and friends when they visit the area. New merchandise arrives weekly, so there’s always something new including beautiful metal artwork. “Oak Island is such a happy place as the locals are thrilled to live here and the tourists are excited to visit. It’s a win- win situation!” Denny said. We also take pride in our great prices, offering locals and visitors extremely competitive pricing. So…when did the “& Guitars” tag on to store name? Denny has been a musician all his life and has a special love of guitars. It all started as a teen when he

worked in a music store and sold many guitars in the 1960s, as well as other instruments. At Dunes, he started by bringing in several used vintage guitars and saw the interest and need in this area. The “Dunes Guitar Bar” is now a proud authorized dealer of new guitar lines featuring Yamaha, Takemine, Tagima, Vintage, AMI, Washburn, Oscar Schmidt and Supro Amps. In addition, we carry some used

guitars, instruments and accessories, and we handle repairs. The guitars are available in all price ranges from beginner to professional musician. Half the fun is sitting down and putting a guitar in your hand to make sure it is the right fit for you. The “Dunes Guitar Bar” is a great place to swap stories (lots of stories!) and past adventures of the many

musicians that come through our store. Dunes Mercantile Gifts & Guitars has had the honor of being named the Southport Magazine 2022 Maggie Award winner for “Most Unique Gifts” followed previously by our 2021 Maggie Award for “Best Hidden Gem.” We are very appreciative of the support and love that the community has given to our little part of this special place we all call home. We believe strongly in donating and supporting local causes and fundraisers and have been actively involved in several different events. Our local pet projects are merchandise that is sold for SOAR (Southport Oak Island Animal Rescue) and Sea Biscuit Wildlife

SHOWCASE

SBHS Drama Is Back The Story of Beauty and the Beast STORY AND PHOTOS BY JEFFREY STITES

F

or the first time in six years, South Brunswick High School is hosting a student drama production. “The Story of Beauty and the Beast” opens Friday, April 1 at 7 pm in the Multi Purpose Room at SBHS, 280 Cougar Road, in Boiling Spring Lakes. Shows continue Saturday, April 2 at 7 pm and Sunday, April 3 with a 3 pm matinee performance. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students and will be available at the door. Featuring a cast and crew of 24 students, the show is appropriate and fun for all ages. This is a traditional re-telling of the story by playwright Steven Galtfeller. The production will include “witches, a comic chef, greedy sisters, a minstrel and other fun characters -- no dancing dishes,” according to the Brunswick Arts Council (BAC), which provided support for the show including funding for the director of the new Drama Club, Rosina Whitfield.

Let Us Help You Achieve the Lawn of Your Dreams

“BAC was approached by West Brunswick High School staff who knew of Ms. Whitfield’s background in youth community theatre in other parts of North Carolina and BAC’s interest in helping SBHS create a drama component for their students. Together, we had a meeting with Principal Hodges and collectively agreed

to move forward with the creation of this club,” said BAC Executive Director Mary Beth Livers. “As the designated County Partner with NC Arts Council, Brunswick Arts Council feels all schools should be offering a strong variety of arts curriculum. It is well documented the cognitive ties between creativity (arts), play (sports), and

academic abilities & achievements,” said Livers. “It is our goal that SBHS reinstate theatre/drama production curriculum next school year.”

Whitfield, who moved to Oak Island in 2021 after retiring as Artistic Director of Greensboro’s Drama Center, recently directed Brunswick Little Theatre’s production of “37 Postcards,” and recruited

help on sets and lights and sound from that show’s crew. “I met Rick Roberts and Andy Parks while directing ’37 Postcards’ at Brunswick Little Theatre,” she said. “They are both awesome professionals. Rick worked at many theatres in New York and New Jersey as a set builder. Andy is a lighting designer who worked out of Raleigh. They both volunteered to help me with the show at SBHS. I am so grateful they were willing to help.” The Drama Club began meeting in January and chose this show as its first

club grows and becomes an integral part of activities at SBHS. Participation in the arts leads to well-rounded students,” she added. “I hope the enthusiastic and hard work from the students involved in ‘The Story of Beauty and the Beast’ cast shows the county that SBHS really needs a drama program,” said Whitfield. “I am willing to help it get established and grow. I am having so much fun. I am indebted to the Brunswick Arts Council. Without them this wouldn’t have happened.”

production. After an audition process, 17 students were cast and seven took on roles as crew back stage handling lighting, sound and stage management duties, according to Whitfield. Livers said it’s important that many students are “learning the ropes on things such as props, staging, stage design, costuming, lighting and sound. In many of the things we see in our daily lives — films, commercials, videos, songs, live theatre productions— there are so many more jobs that are unseen and necessary beyond the performers.”
