Fancy a Climb?

The Caswell Beach light house is at the center of the Fun Run this month and the History Article. This made it the perfect choice for the cover. (The flowers were added) If you have never taken a trip to the top, it’s not for the faint hearted for sure. With 6 stories of ship like ladders to climb up, a fear of heights is not ideal. I made it up to about level 3 before I had to turn back. I was told, this happens all the time, so I didn’t feel too bad. I did get a nice view from one of the small window still. It’s free to go up, you just have to schedule an appointment, but I would highly recommend not doing it in the peak of summer, it can get quite hot. I hope you can make it to the top!

pring is about new growth, renewal and fresh starts. There are plenty of opportunities this month to fully shed the remnants of winter. Get your body moving and soak up the beauty around you in the annual Lighthouse Run, and find out what you can do to help protect our piece of paradise with events scheduled around Earth Day.
MOVIE PRESENTATION APRIL 19 — “A PLASTIC OCEAN”
Our coastal communities have many organizations dedicated to helping preserve and protect our waters and wildlife. As Earth Day approaches, the Oak Island Parks and Recreation Department, the Oak Island Beach Preservation Society and Coastal Watch have teamed up to offer a free showing of “A Plastic Ocean.” The documentary explores more than 20 locations, documenting pollution by plastics and the effect on oceans. “Plastic Oceans Foundation is a global charitable organization that aims to change the worlds’ attitude to plastic in a single generation. The organization aims to limit the demand for non-essential plastic, using the ocean as a litmus test to monitor the impact of this man-made pollution crisis on human health,” according to the group’s website. The movie will be shown on Thursday, April 19 at 6:30 p.m. at the Oak Island Recreation Center, 3003 E. Oak Island Drive, Oak Island. Viewers should bring a reusable cup or mug to enjoy a non-alcoholic beverage or snack. To reserve a spot or to find out more details, call the Recreation Center at (910) 278-5518.
vironmental impact” and whose owners want to “share their insight and love for sustainable living” are also being encouraged to participate. The first Earth Day was held on April 20, 1970. Now, people in nearly 200 countries participate in Earth Day activities, according to the Earth Day organization’s website. As part of Oak Island’s celebration, t there will be booths with hands-on exhibits and learning opportunities, displays, food and more. School groups are encouraged to attend. For more details, call the Oak Island Recreation Center at (910) 278-5518.

Easy Recycle Tips Doing your part is simple; here’s how STORY BY AMI BROWN
D
oing your part to help the environment is easy. Now some people go full speed, installing solar panels, composting toilets, wind generators and electric cars! YES! That is great. But some of us might not have the resources to make such huge leaps. What can the average person do ? Well here are some great tips from treehugger.com. FIRST THINGS FIRST, A LITTLE R & R&R
The aphorism is so tired it almost might seem like “reduce, reuse, recycle” should go without saying. Most of us have only really heard the last third of the phrase, and they’re ranked in order of importance, but there are several steps we should consider before recycling. Reducing the amount that we consume, and shifting our consumption to well-designed products and services, is the first step. Finding constructive uses for “waste” materials is next. If it’s broken, fix it don’t replace it! If you can, return it to the producer (especially electronics). Or better yet - don’t buy any packaged goods! Tossing it in the blue bin should be last. (The garbage can is not on the list, for good reason.) Through a balance of these three principles you can easily see your landfill-destined waste dwindle fast. A good example of recycling is setting your empty water bottles in the bin on the curb. But by using a water filter and reusable container you can reduce or completely eliminate your need for disposable plastic bottles.
KNOW WHAT YOU CAN AND CAN’T RECYCLE
gram’ ships the capsules to another part of the country (hello carbon emissions!) and then downcycles the capsules to the lowest possible level. Their advertisements might make customers feel better about dumping capsules, but we know the truth behind the scheme, and it’s not recycling at its best.

HOP IN
The essence of recycling is the cyclical movement of materials through the system, eliminating waste and the need to extract more virgin materials. Supporting recycling means feeding this loop by not only recycling, but also supporting recycled products. We can now find high recycled content in everything from printer paper to office chairs. But make sure you know the difference between recyclable and recycled.
ENCOURAGE AN ARTIST
If you know someone interested in making art from recycled materials, offer to provide supplies. Many school children need items like paper towel tubes for art projects. Older artists use everything from

Read up on the recycling rules for your area and make sure you don’t send anything in that can’t be processed. Each city has its own specifics, so try to follow those guidelines as best you can. But it can be more complicated than that. There’s real recycling, and there’s green-washed recycling and knowing the difference can help you avoid encouraging companies from ‘fake feel-good’ recycling. For example, Illy, the coffee company, began a capsule recycling program for its disposable coffee pods. The reality is that the ‘recycling proSouthport Magazine 2016-2017 SOI Chamber Small Business of the Year Winner

CURRENTS rubber bands to oven doors. If you know someone who teaches art classes, suggest that an emphasis be put on making art from trash. While you’re at it, remind them to use recycled paper and biodegradable, earth-friendly glues, paints, and pencils whenever possible. See below for inspiration and groups that connect artists and students with useful “trash.”Don’t forget, you can get your creativity on and re-purpose your recycled materials too!
RECYCLE YOUR WATER
If you’re a homeowner, consider rearranging your plumbing so that rainwater or wastewater from your shower and tub is used to flush your toilet. If you have a garden, water it with leftover bathwater or dishwashing water (as long as you use a biodegradable soap). For more on water recycling see How to Go Green: Water.
RECYCLE YOUR GREENERY
William McDonough and Michael Braungart, authors of the groundbreaking Cradle to Cradle, envision so-called “waste” divided into two categories: technical nutrients and biological nutrients. Biological nutrients are those that, at the end of their useful life, can safely and readily decompose and return to the soil. Composting is one of the simplest and most effective recycling methods. Both your garden cuttings and your green kitchen waste can go into an outdoor or indoor composter (with or without entertaining a population of worms). If you don’t have a garden yourself, find neighbors or a community garden that can make use of your soil. Composting food scraps will mean your regular kitchen wastebasket fills up more slowly and also won’t smell. Hotter, more active compost heaps can also consume tougher stuff like newspaper and paper napkins. After Christmas, many cities also have programs for turning your tree into mulch.
RECYCLE YOUR ROBOTS
Electronics recycling is becoming more common in many urban areas, battery recycling is ubiquitous (rechargeable batteries are ecologically sounder, but even they wear out after a while), and there are a number of non-profit organizations that will take computer parts and turn them into working computers for others. Companies like Ebay have also developed programs to help your electronics find new homes. Other groups will gladly recycle your cell phone or give it to a senior citizen, as even without a contract it can still make emergency calls. If you have a major appliance that doesn’t work and you’d rather replace
it than try to fix it, offer it to local repair shops, trade schools, or hobbyists to tinker with. Many cities now offer hazardous waste recycling days when they will take not only hazardous waste, but electronics.
ANTICIPATE RECYCLING
In addition to buying recycled goods, keep a keen eye out for recyclable goods. Whenever you purchase something packaged, think about how you can reuse the packaging, return it to a shipping store for reuse, or try to otherwise recycle it. If you get something likely to run down or wear out over time, such as an electronic component, give preference to the model that can be easily upgraded or cannibalized for parts so that you don’t have to junk the whole thing if one part breaks. Products that are impossibly fused together are often called “monstrous hybrids” and are, while often cheaper up front, frequently unfixable and unrecyclable. If you don’t love something, let it go Lots of charities welcome your donations. Groups like Freecycle and Recycler’s Exchange exist to help you get rid of useful objects that you just don’t want to make use of. If you’re in a Craigslist city, make use of the “free stuff” section. Give away clothes that don’t fit, the boxes you used in your last house move, or scented soaps that don’t appeal to your sensibilities. Make it a rule in your house that nothing useable goes in the trash until you’ve given the community a fair shot at it. Doing your part, however small it may seen, can add up to big results. Some interesting facts from the Waste Management of California:
RECYCLING FACTS & TIPS
In a lifetime the average American will throw away 600 times the amount of his or her adult weight in garbage. For example, a 150 pound adult will leave a trash legacy of 90,000 pounds. Recycling Makes Sense Recycling is an important component of protecting the environment and helping our local communities. Recycling helps conserve resources and energy, preserves valuable landfill space and supports a healthy environment.
ALUMINUM RECYCLING Recycling one ton of aluminum: Saves 14,000 kWh of energy Saves 39.6 barrels (1,663 gallons) of oil
Saves 237.6 million Btu’s of energy Saves 10 cubic yards of landfill space Aluminum Recycling Tips Prepare aluminum cans for recycling by either crushing the cans to save space or leaving them uncrushed. Cans that are rinsed out will have little or no odor and are less likely to attract bugs.
CARDBOARD RECYCLING
Recycling one ton of cardboard: Saves 390 kWh of energy Saves 1.1 barrels (46 gallons) of oil Saves 6.6 million Btu’s of energy
Cardboard Recycling Tips Prepare cardboard for recycling by removing all other materials in the box such as plastic wrap, polystyrene peanuts and other packing materials. Break down cardboard boxes to save storage space. Try to keep cardboard dry and free from food waste. Cardboard can get wet and still be recycled, but is more difficult to carry due to the added weight of the water.
GLASS RECYCLING
Recycling one ton of glass: Saves 42 kWh of energy Saves 0.12 barrels (5 gallons) of oil Saves 714,286 Btu’s of energy Saves 2 cubic yards of landfill space Saves 7.5 pounds of air pollutants from being released Glass Recycling Tips Prepare glass containers for recycling by rinsing out with water. Labels on glass containers do not have to be removed because they are removed during the crushing process and/or burned off during the melting process. Avoid breaking the glass and mixing broken colors together as this may make the glass unacceptable for recycling.
PAPER RECYCLING
Recycling one ton of paper: Saves 4,100 kWh of energy Saves 9 barrels (380 gallons) of oil Saves 54 million Btu’s of energy Saves 3.3 cubic yards of landfill space Saves 60 pounds of air pollutants being released Saves 7,000 gallons of water Saves 17 trees

KITCHEN April Fools Delites A chocolate chip cookie recipe that is mashed full of laughter STORY BY ALYSSA CROUSON
A
re you ready to get back at your loved ones for last year’s prank? On April Fools everyone is determined to have the best scheme to prank their families, friends, and co-workers. This year why not do something fun and EDIBLE!
The best way to do this is through food and this mashed potato cookie recipe will truly be something they were not expecting. Using mashed potatoes allows the cookie to have a brownish color when baked, similar to a chocolate chip cookie.
Mash Potato Cookies
INGREDIENTS: 2 pounds of peeled and quartered potatoes 2 tablespoons of butter 1 cup of milk 1 cup of dried beans INSTRUCTIONS: Heat the oven to 350 degrees. To create this hilarious ruse all you need is 35 minutes, an oven, black beans and all of the average mashed potato ingredients. Bring a pot of water to boil the potatoes, drain them, then blend the butter and milk in slowly. You may use any seasoning you would like but avoid any colored spices like pepper to avoid the cookies looking different than normal. After the potatoes are fully blended you may stir in one cup of dried black beans to represent the chocolate chips. Then place spoonfuls of the batter on a cookie sheet, 1 inch apart and bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes until golden brown. Serve warm to your April Fools guests to give them a real surprise. The best part is that after the prank is over you can eat the mashed potato cookies as an appetizer for your fun dinner party. Spread butter on both sides of each pound cake slice.
This next idea is quick and simple from allrecipes.com. It’s perfect for tricking your family, friends or co-workers. How about a little little sweet pound cake that looks like a grilled cheese sandwich!

ART BEAT Reuse, Recycle, Repeat; Turning Trash into Treasure
The Painted Mermaid opens second location STORY BY CARLA EDSTROM
M
y mother was born in 1931 during the Great Depression. Growing up in that era brought about a certain mentality to most Americans - all about saving. She always liked to save and reuse things, even when it wasn’t in vogue as it is today. Needless to say, I inherited her love of all things old and rusty, and I’ve been known to go through her basement looking for cobweb and dust covered treasures long forgotten to use in my home. And since I now have some of her things in my own home, I have warm memories and stories of my family I never would have had. With the growing awareness of protecting the environment and the popularity of minimalist living, upcycling is becoming mainstream in our culture. The Merriam Webster Dictionary defines upcycling as “to recycle (something) in such a way that the resulting product is of a higher value than the original item: to create an object of greater value from (a discarded object of lesser value).” (“Upcycling” def. 1) Although the name is new, reusing abandoned junk objects in art is not new. ‘Junk art’ was a phrase coined in the 1950’s for art that was created from discarded items. Pinterest is chock full of ideas for reusing and repurposing everything from outdated furniture to wood pallets. Local artist and businesswoman Amy Atwell has full grasp of the concept of upcycling as evident in her successful Southport store, The Painted Mermaid, located at 1208 N. Howe St, Southport. “I’ve been creative my whole life, but not unlike a lot of other creative people I run into, I don’t exactly consider myself an artist. I upcycle,” explains Atwell, although I definitely consider her an artist. Making beautiful things out of discarded items is definitely an art form and takes a lot of creativity and imagination. “I have
a good eye and can see the potential in things that most would toss in the trash,” she explains. I know what I like and create more or less to suit me, and when someone else loves it too, that is a wondrous, fabulous icing on the cake!”
“I’ve been creative my whole life, but not unlike a lot of other creative people I run into, I don’t exactly consider myself an artist. I upcycle,” Gaining inspiration for her work from other people, Atwell enjoys how sometimes her work is a collaborative project with others. “I’m frequently invited to ‘pick’ the homes and storage units of other collectors of greatness who just haven’t gotten around to realizing their own visions,” she explains. “Frequently the conversation will turn to ‘what they see, what I see, what else would be great, etc.’ Once these marvelous things are in my studio or store, and other artists come in, those ideas get developed even further,” she explains. “It is often someone else that actually completes the piece, and who completes it is rarely relevant. The collaboration and seeing it come to fruition is equally gratifying. And if I happen to be there when it goes to
Amy Atwell; a visionary of reimagined art! its forever home...nothing better!” Although she graduated from Appalachian State University with a degree in Fashion Merchandising and Design, Atwell admits it was her 30 years of life experience and working in retail that taught her the most. “It took me a very long time to get comfortable selling my own work - or even sharing with someone that it was mine,” she explains. “It takes a lot to put yourself out there like that. One of the very best things about having done this (the store) has been the opportunity to act as a buffer for other folks who are nervous about sharing their art. I like to think of myself as being able to help guide others from a marketing standpoint without erasing the uniqueness of who they are and what they create,” she said. Atwell learned the art of buying and selling at flea markets and sales years ago from a friend, and became hooked on the process. “I often found new uses for old treasures, and decorated with random salvaged pieces, but the actual upcycling of it all came later,” she said. “I give the artists around me credit for building my nerve, my husband credit for knowing that power tools make the best gifts, and to the internet for reinforcing that there is more than enough room in the world for everyone’s unique taste and talents,” she said. The Painted Mermaid features many upcycled, refurbished and formerly discarded items, many of which Atwell created herself. “We opened April 2010. After years of renting booth space, it was time to take
Southport Magazine 2016-2017 SOI Chamber Small Business of the Year Winner
the plunge. Although I’ve always been the sole owner, a dear friend of mine was very instrumental in opening the doors and realizing the dream,” she said. “As we met and ‘took on’ other artists, ‘pickers’ and just every day folks looking to clean out closets or revamp their décor we made a lot of really great friends - several of whom have been with me a great many of these eight years.” Atwell just opened a second store in Southport on Howe Street where the old Swayne’s store was, that has a much larger area for classes and working artists. “The current plan is not to move the store, but have a second location at 817 N Howe St. More space to spread out and bring in even more fabulousness! As we get settled into our new larger space, we will finally have space to open our doors to other artists and their talents. In fact, look for details on our upcoming seminar with watercolorist Jim McIntosh April 21st,” she said. I got to take a peak at the new space while doing this article and I can’t wait to see it finished. I know I’ll find some interesting pieces, and maybe even create a few new memories. You can reach Atwell by email at thepaintedmermaid@hotmail.com, or through her website at https://www.thepaintedmermaid.com/. 1208 N. Howe St. and the NOW OPEN, 2nd location, 817 N. HISTORY Historic Landmark Oak Island Lighthouse is a popular local attraction STORY BY KASS FINCHER
B
ob Ahlers knows his way to the top of the Oak Island Lighthouse. He absolutely should; he’s only done it 1500 times! Ahlers is the chair of FOIL, Friends of Oak Island Lighthouse, a nonprofit organization consisting of 35 volunteers who maintain the structure and grounds of the iconic landmark.
Only five of the 35 volunteers actually guide people all the way to the top. The other volunteer guides stop on the second landing to relate a history of the lighthouse and answer questions from those less adventurous to make it to the top. I was one of those who wimped out early. I had definitely planned to climb to the top, but after climbing up two of the 60-degree slope ship’s ladders, I gave in to my inner scaredy-cat. I thought there might have been many others like me, but Ahlers assured me that I was in the minority – only one out of ten who attempt it don’t make it to the top. Wow, I’m so ashamed. The fact is that the tours continue to grow in numbers at this popular attraction. Last year over 5,000 people made it to the top. Those Top Tours require a four-week reservation in advance, with a maximum of 20 people per tour. In the summer – the busiest season – only Tuesday and Thursday mornings, and sometimes Sundays, are available
for tours to the top. The lower landing tours are available with no reservations needed, Wednesday – Saturday, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. All tours are free; the lighthouse structure is totally dependent on volunteers and donations for maintenance. Ahlers and the other tour guides have a great knowledge of the history lighthouses have played in the past and still play today. “There are two main reasons for a lighthouse,” he explained. “One is to mark the entrance to a channel; the other is to warn of danger. Because so many vessels trying to get to Wilmington were running aground on Frying Pan Shoals, they built the first one – the Cape Fear Lighthouse – in 1794 at Bald Head. The problem was they built it too close to the sea and back then they didn’t know the seas rose significantly every year. It was torn down in 1813 and soon after that they built the current Bald Head Lighthouse further inland.” Continuing his story, Ahlers told us how the Oak Island Lighthouse came to
be. “Because it was determined that the Bald Head Lighthouse was not tall enough to help keep ships off the shoals, another tower was built in 1903 on Bald Head. However, in the 1940s when they wanted to automate the lights, there was no electricity on the island; it didn’t arrive until 1978. So they decided to build the Oak Island Lighthouse. It was built in 1957; the lights were turned on in 1958. It was the next to the last lighthouse to be built in this country. The last one was in Charleston in 1962.” The Oak Island Lighthouse was built at a cost of $110,000. It stands 153 feet tall, including five feet underground, with 24 pilings maintaining stability. It was built as a single concrete pour, with the paint colors mixed in, by a company that built silos. There is no spiral staircase, rather a series of ship ladders that total 131 steps. The light pattern consists of four one-second flashes every 10 seconds. The original beacons were adapted from reflectors used on WWII aircraft spotlights, and at that time the lighthouse was the brightest in the country and second-brightest in the world. Over time, those lights have been replaced by improved technology. Today they are 1000-watt halogen bulbs, which last much longer but cost $200 each to replace. Officials with the Coast Guard who maintain the lighting are considering moving to LED bulbs which would be much less expensive. In 2010 the Coast Guard installed an uninterruptible power supply so the emergency lights never will go out. In 2004, the government was interested in reducing their lighthouse operations, so the Oak Island Lighthouse was acquired by the Town of Caswell Beach. Though the Coast Guard retained the beacon responsibility as part of their navigational mission, the town needed to find
people to maintain the structure. That’s when the Friends of Oak Island Lighthouse (FOIL) was formed, using strictly volunteers and running on donations only. Ahlers laughs when he recalls how he got involved. “My wife was a town commissioner at the time, so when they discussed who could run the maintenance group, she volunteered me. She said I was retired; it would be good for me.” In planning for their maintenance operation, Ahlers and the other members of FOIL had their share of learning to do. “The outside railing at the top is very narrow,” he mentioned. “The first time we went up there to do maintenance, we grabbed onto the railing; the whole railing shifted, it had corroded off.” Though the lighthouse was built to withstand the prevailing south winds and the occasional hurricane, Ahlers says it can move a bit in heavy gusts. “I went

HISTORY up there once in a 60 mile per hour wind. When I got to the top I could feel a bit of sway – it scared the heck out of me.” Besides their maintenance duties, Ahlers and FOIL members also are committed to sharing the history of the lighthouse through free tours.“People come down here on vacation; they have rental costs, food, kids want to do 82 things, everything else,” he says. “We thought it would be nice to offer a family outing that’s free and fun.” Not only are the tours for families; they sometimes provide a unique venue for major life events – marriage proposals! Over 60 people have climbed to the top for that purpose, and, so far, all of the proposals were accepted. Others have different objectives for climbing to the top. Ahlers says they have an ongoing competition to be the oldest lighthouse climber. “This year we had someone come at age 93 and climb all the way to the top. Another local guy who had climbed at 87 wouldn’t be outdone. So he came back and climbed at 93.” Those brave people make me feel especially wimpy. Ahler says that on a
clear day, you can see all the way to Holden Beach. I guess I will try to do that from the second floor landing.
The Oak Island Lighthouse relies 100% on donations for all governance, tours and maintenance activites through FOIL. FOIL is a completely volunteer organization, with no paid staff and no government funding. If you would like to make a tax deductible donation, checks can be made out to FOIL and sent to: Friends of Oak Island Lighthouse 1100 Caswell Beach Road Caswell Beach, NC 28465

SAVOR A Big Aloha for Cafe Koa New cafe takes Southport by storm STORY BY KASS FINCHER
S
outhport residents are welcoming one of our newest restaurants downtown – Cafe Koa – with a big “aloha.” Inspired by one of the owner’s experiences in Hawaii, the cafe’s name Koa means adventurer, and it is also the name of a native tree whose wood is used for building canoes and surfboards.
Melanie Woodell and Alexis Oxendine are the mother-daughter owners who opened the cafe in late January of this year. Oxendine, the daughter, also owns KaiJoe’s on Oak Island. It’s a walk-up window, Mexican-inspired taco stand. The owners hail from Southern Pines originally. Woodell moved to Southport six years ago as a single mom, when Ox-
endine was in college in Hawaii. Oxendine received her degree in biochemistry from Hawaii Pacific University, and moved to Boiling Springs about four years ago. Woodell describes the benefits of her daughter’s education. “Many people don’t realize it, but there really is a science to food. Because of her background, Alexis knows how to place certain things togeth-

er to achieve a particular flavor.” Both women are single moms; each have two young boys. The cafe is named after Oxendine’s 4-month old baby, and Kai-Joe’s in Oak Island is named after her older 2-year old son. they decided to offer just breakfast and lunch so that could achieve a work-life balance to raise their
families. Woodell describes their decision to go into business together. “I have been a hair stylist since I was 19, and have owned many salons over the years. I still have a salon – Salon 4128 at South Harbor – where I work a couple days each week. But I was looking for a way to still be creative and at

SAVOR some point retire from doing hair. So we just went for it!” She goes on to explain their love for the business. “I feel like the two of us working together; it just works. She has the brain; I have the art – it flows well together. We complement each other. I’m in the front, with customers and orders. She is mostly in the kitchen; she makes a lot of the food, but we work together well. I do love plating the food; that’s fun for me. We both love food and we love being a little adventurous with food. Alexis has been a vegetarian for a long time so she brings that awareness to our partnership. It’s about doing something we both love and have a passion for.” Their creative approach even played a role before the business was open. They painted the outside of the building first, and put balloons in the windows. Creating a sense of anticipation about what was coming in that space, their efforts paid off. “We’ve been very happy with the community’s support,” Woodell says. “We had good word-of-mouth advertising even before we had put a sign up!”
Their space on Howe Street was formerly the home of Baked with Love, whose owner Lisa Botnick gave Oxendine her first job after moving here. The renovations on the interior offer an interesting upcycled décor. The wood on the walls and tables is recycled, much of it from salvaged pallets. Even the tables are made out of surfboards. Woodell describes their design intent. “Alexis’ brother-in-law built everything. We love that rustic, organic feel. But we wanted to incorporate the coastal vibe as well; we hope people like it and feel comfortable here.” The food has a cool vibe as well. All the bagels are from Bagel Dock in Calabash. The owner is from the Bronx, so they are authentic New York style bagels. Sandwiches are typically offered on bagels, but other bread options are available. The sandwiches are named after rock stars like Dylan, Bowie and Denver. One of the most popular – the Hendrix – offers roast beef, white cheddar, onions, arugula and peppercorn mayo on an Asiago bagel. The Marley is a vegetarian favorite, with sundried tomatoes, cucumbers, feta cheese, onions, greens and tzatziki sauce.
The salads are named for rock songs like Maggie May and Bobby McGee. A favorite is the Mama Mia, with Asian slaw, peanuts, mandarin oranges and a cilantro Thai peanut dressing. Not to be outdone, the breakfast menu is fun too – named for bands like the Zeppelin and the Blondie. They are served with yogurt, granola and fruit until 11 a.m. each day. A favorite is the Abba, with smoked salmon, cream cheese, red onion, tomatoes and capers on a bagel. The cafe will be offering acai bowls and pastries soon as well. Woodell laughs about their beverage selections. “Our Barnie’s coffee is super good! And we want to be known for having great lemonade. We’re already known for having great sweet tea! We run out of it daily.” The women are building on their successful opening with more plans for the future. Their market space will be expanded to offer produce and fresh flowers. This spring they will offer live music several evenings each week with a select menu. They want the evenings at the cafe to be family-oriented, where you can come to re-
lax, have a nice meal and enjoy some live entertainment. Summing up their goals for Cafe Koa, Woodell put it simply. “We make everything fresh, that’s important to us. We created our menu to enable us to do that. What it comes down to is we’re just a mother and daughter team who love each other, love food, and simply want to do something that’s fun and positive for our community. We love Southport – our small coastal community is awesome.” These women rule! We wish them the best.

BIZ Q&A A Sky Full of Fun Brunswick Air
STORY BY KASS FINCHER
B
arb Olsen-Gwin and her husband Rich Gwin own Brunswick Air at Cape Fear Regional Jetport. Recently I sat down with Barb to learn more about the business.
WHAT ARE YOUR AND YOUR HUSBAND’S BACKGROUNDS; HAVE YOU ALWAYS BEEN IN AVIATION?
I worked for Ozark Airlines in St. Louis in a variety of administrative positions – accounting, payroll, marketing – not on the airplanes. While I was there, TWA bought out Ozark and I spent 12 years with them in similar roles. Rich was in the maintenance department; at one point he was VP for Operations for TWA. In 1997, he was offered a job with a cargo airline in Ann Arbor Michigan. We got married and moved there. Then Rich got a job offer to work for Piedmont Airlines – a subsidiary of US Air – on the eastern shore of Maryland. We loved it there; it was 30 minutes to the beach, 30 minutes to the Chesapeake Bay. Two years later, US Air was starting up a new airline – Potomac Airlines – and Rich was recruited to help with that, so we moved to the mountains in Roanoke, Virginia. I got a job at an FBO – Piedmont Hawthorne Aviation – my first exposure in general aviation. I did it all – talked on the radio with the jets coming in, handled office duties, sold sectionals. It was fun! Then 911 happened; they shut down Potomac Airlines and moved us to Charlotte, where he went to work for US Air.
HOW DID YOU END UP HERE?
When Rich retired from US Air in Charlotte, we moved here in 2003. I worked in real estate
sales; he rehabbed houses. He missed the aviation activity, so in 2007 we started Cape Fear Airworks to offer maintenance services. He has the FAA certification for airplane mechanics that’s called an A&P – it stands for airframe and powerplant – which means he can work on airframes as well as engines.
AND YOU HAVE YOUR PILOT’S LICENSE?
Yes! But it took a span of 22 years from when I first started. In my early 30s in the late 80s when I was working for Ozark, I decided to take flying lessons. I started meeting all these general aviation pilots, and the camaraderie is what really got me into it. I flew 20 hours, soloed, flew one more hour after that and then I stopped. I was a single mom at the time with three kids and ran out of money. After I soloed, I thought, yes, I can do this, I can come back to this someday. So, fast forward many years, and in the summer of 2010, Rich said let’s buy an airplane so you can finish up your flight training, then I can start and get mine too! He knew everything about the airplanes but didn’t know how to fly one. So we bought a two-seater Cessna 152, the basic trainer in the industry, and I started to fly again. Dennis Faver, one of our flight instructors who’s been with us since the beginning, was my instructor and took me to my check ride. I got my license in March 2012.
WHEN DID YOU OPEN BRUNSWICK AIR?
There was a different flight school here when we had just the maintenance shop, but we started hearing rumors they might leave. So when the other school left in 2010, Howie Franklin, the airport director, called and asked if we wanted to start a flight school. We decided that we would, but we had no idea what we were doing.
SO WHAT ARE YOUR ROLES NOW?
Rich runs the maintenance shop. In the past he was in upper management; now he’s turning wrenches again and he’s having a ball! Our maintenance shop has customers coming in from other areas; probably 75% are from elsewhere. People fly their airplanes to the maintenance base they want to use. Rich is training two other young mechanics – one just got his A&P certificate and the other is doing on-the-job training. I am the president, bookkeeper, marketer, tax person, everything. Dennis told me you are such a great
face for the flight school because you’re a woman. People have the image they’re going to walk in and see some gruff old guy, so I hope I’m an inviting presence.
TELL ME ABOUT THE FLIGHT SCHOOL. HOW MANY STUDENTS DO YOU WORK WITH AND WHAT LICENSING DO YOU OFFER?
A private pilot’s license requires 40 hours minimum; most get 65-70 hours before getting their license. We usually have maybe 12 solos per year and 10 or 12 check rides. At any given time we have 15-20 fairly active students. It’s the largest part of our operation – maybe 75% of our revenues. We have six instructors; they’re all part-time, retired, and do it because they love flying. Our flight instructors just teach; they don’t do any administrative tasks, and they love that. They just want to teach and be in the airplane. They tell me when they want to work and I just fill in their dance card. I manage the flight school, so I’m the glue that holds everything together.

SHOWCASE DO MOST PEOPLE WHO START TRAINING END UP GETTING THEIR LICENSE?
Not always. There’s a huge dropout rate – probably 80%. People will come in gung-ho and fly three or four times, and that’s when they have their little epiphany. You have to really want to learn to fly; you have to throw yourself into this. I actually try to prepare people for that – I tell them that after three or four lessons you’ll probably come to that mental speed bump; if you can get over that you’ll get more confidence and you’ll be fine.
I’VE HEARD THE GENERAL AVIATION INDUSTRY IS CHALLENGED WITH ATTRACTING YOUNG PEOPLE. DO YOU FIND THAT TO BE TRUE HERE?
AIRPLANES?
Yes, it’s maybe 20% of our business. We have three aircraft available for rent by the hour.
DO YOU OFFER PROMOTIONS TO LET PEOPLE TRY OUT FLYING?
Yes! Our Discovery Flight is a 30-minute flight – you’re sticking your toes in the water to see if you enjoy flying. People give it as a gift all the time. You can check it out without making the flight training commitment yet. I did a special last June and offered a $69 promotion. I think we flew 40 people – graduation gifts, Father’s Day gifts. We were blown away by the response; it was the most we’ve ever had.
IF SOMEONE WANTS TO LEARN HOW TO FLY, WHAT IS YOUR Not really for us. We have a wide variety ADVANTAGE AS A FLIGHT of ages; right now we actually have six stu- SCHOOL CHOICE? dents under age 20. We also have a few under 16 who know they want to fly and their parents want them to have the opportunity. So they come out every couple of months to learn and keep their interest. They can’t solo until they’re 16. And flight training is not inexpensive. You have to count on at least 55 hours and maybe $8,000 - $10,000 over a year’s time, knowing you’ll get weathered out a bit. Scheduling training time can be tough for younger people who are working; the vast majority can only fly once a week, so they need to budget for a year’s time. Our instructors are so excited to work with young people because they see themselves; they see what they were like as teenagers. As a woman who got her license, are you in the minority? Yes, there are not very many women in aviation. Of the 650,000 active pilots in the country, only maybe six percent are women. We’ve had six women students in the years we’ve been here. Kathy Nicholas is the commander for our local Civil Air Patrol squadron. Kayla Keith got her license between high school and college. She went into a top notch aviation school and is currently finishing up her sophomore year. If she stays the course, she will walk right into an airline job.
TELL ME ABOUT YOUR AIR TOURS – IS THAT AN IMPORTANT PART OF YOUR SERVICE?
Air tours are just a small part of our revenue, but they are a good way to reach tourists to the area. We have two commercial pilots who do the tours. They love it because they just get to fly. The tours are designed to take families or groups – just three people and the pilot in a four-seat aircraft, our Cessna 172. I named the tours using the aviation alphabet – for example Bravo, Romeo, Whiskey – to correspond to the areas they fly over. The newest one is Tango, which stands for the tides; we go up over the ocean and come back down the river.
AND YOU ALSO RENT OUT YOUR
I think the fact that we have such senior flight instructors makes our company really professional, but it also makes it fun. Nobody takes themselves too seriously,, but their professionalism is so ingrained in the way they teach flying. And there are not many options close by. Air Wilmington just got bought out, and I understand they will not be offering flight training. The next closest schools are probably Fayetteville and Raleigh.
WHAT OTHER THINGS MAKE YOUR BUSINESS SUCCESSFUL?
The fact that we own our maintenance shop is huge. Most flight schools have to pay for that; we own it, so that allows us to keep maintenance expenses down. But safety is top of mind for Rich, given his background. Our instructors love that he’s proactive and so safety conscious. The airplanes are highly reliable because he’s used to having programs in place to keep ahead of the airplane’s maintenance needs.
YOU OPERATE IN A PRETTY BUSY AIRPORT FOR A SMALL COMMUNITY LIKE OURS. WHY IS THAT?
There are a number of businesses out here – helicopter flights, skydiving, our flight school and tours. Not to mention the number of private pilots coming and going, and the flights coming in to take people to Bald Head. We contribute operations, and that’s the name of the game to get grants for the airport. One takeoff and one landing counts as two operations. So when we have someone learning ready to solo, they may do 10 takeoffs and landings, that’s 20 operations. When we have six students, we could easily do 100 operations a day. And that’s just us – it doesn’t include the helicopter or sky diving businesses.
WHAT PLANS DO YOU HAVE FOR THE FUTURE?
We have been talking with someone who has a complex airplane that we could use for commercial training. You need 250 hours to get your commercial license, where you can fly for hire. We think there could be a fair amount of demand for this; there is a shortage of pilots now and regional airlines are paying better, even giving signing bonuses. Brunswick Air is a family-run business with experienced pilots ready to teach you or help you just tour our beautiful coastal area from the air. Give them a call and enjoy the experience.

CHEERS Off-The-Wall Beers
Now for something completely different, Beer - like it or not? STORY BY JEFF STITES
F
or April we’re going a little off-the- wall. I was inspired by April Fool’s Day to find some brews that might make one wonder what kind of fool would mix this stuff up together. Are these beers crazy good, or just plain crazy. Let’s find out. Elysian Split Shot Expresso Milk Stout 5.6 ABV 28 IBU The Label Says: Split Shot combines the local talents of Elysian Brewing and Stumptown Coffee in a deliciously smooth, very Northwest beer. My Take: I can’t say how “Northwest” it tastes, but it really is a “deliciously smooth” beer. Milk stouts are a mild version of stout invented in the late 1800s to satify a demand for more easy-drinking, less robust beers. They are made with lac-

tose added to the usually stout recipe, and were originally marketed as having all the nutritional value of milk, but in a beer! Brilliant, right? Except it’s completely not true. Lactose imparts flavor and a bit of creamy mouth feel to beer, but nothing else. In England, it’s illegal to call a beer a “milk stout” for reasons of truth in advertising. The Northwest apparently has no such qualms. The coffee addition in this brew is very nice. It gives the beer an interesting flavor and a bit of bitterness different from that imparted by lots of hops, but it is in no way overpowering. This is a beer with mild coffee notes rather than a coffee-flavored beer. Bell’s Kalamazoo Stout, Stout Brewed with Brewers’ Licorice 6% ABV The Label Says: Named after the city where it all began, Bell’s Kalamazoo Stout is one of our most classic recipes. This smooth, full-bodied stout offers a blend of dark chocolate and freshly roasted coffee, balanced with a significant hop presence. My Take: This one isn’t bad at all, if you like big, bold stouts. This is the beer that inspired the creation of milk stout for those who weren’t as interested in this kind of complete and total beeriness. Is beeriness a word? It should be. Anyhow, if you like
26 Southport Magazine / APRIL 2018 / www.SouthportMag.com
your beer beer-flavored, but not hopped into oblivion, you’ll love this stout. Sadly, I don’t think there’s any licorice in this. At least I couldn’t find any. I was hoping to use this as an excuse to wax eloquent about the joys of black jellybeans, but alas, it was not to be. Innis & Gunn Rum Aged, Beer Aged With Rum Oak Chips 6.8% ABV The Label Says: This ruby-red beer has been aged with rum oak chips, resulting in a beer with a delicious warming character that is bursting with fruit and warming spiciness. These vibrant flavours perfectly balance the beer’s toffee-malt backbone which has led it to win numerous awards around the world. My Take: I love Scottish ales and I love rum. This beer truly tastes like a well-balanced combination of the two, like a rumflavored ale. You’d think that would be right up my alley, but it isn’t. I can appreciate the two flavor profiles. I can see that
this beer accomplishes exactly what it intended to accomplish and did it well. The Scottish ale portion is flavorful and holds it own against a fairly strong rum presence. It’s not a bad beer and it might even be an excellent beer for a person who appreciates these flavors combined together. I’m just not that person, but I kind of wish I were. New Holland Brewing Dragon’s Milk Bourbon Barrel Aged Stout 11% ABV 31 IBU, The Label Says: Rich, roasty and creamy with heavy notes of vanilla and just enough familiar warmth from oak barrels. Reminds us that all of life’s events- big or small- are worth celebrating. My Take: I’ve had this one before and didn’t like it one bit. I figured to give it another go for this article and I’m glad I did. It’s growing on me. Now, this is a thick one. They call it “creamy,” but I’m going with simply thick. I’m tasting more vanilla than I remember, which I like as it kind of moderates the bourbon. Maybe the last one I had had been on the shelf too long. I love bourbon and this stout has a definite bourbon flavor. It blends with the stout better than the rum did with the Scottish ale, I think. It’s a sipper to be sure, at 11% ABV, but one that I think is worth the time to sit down and enjoy. Founders Breakfast Stout, Double Chocolate Coffee Oatmeal Stout 8.3% ABV 60 IBU The Label Says: The coffee lover’s consummate beer. Brewed with an abundance of flaked oats, bitter and imported chocolates, and two types of coffee, this stout has an intense, fresh-roasted java nose topped with a frothy, cinnamon-colored head that goes forever. My Take: I’m almost out of breath from copying that description down, but I have to admit it does do justice to a beer with a
Southport Magazine 2016-2017 SOI Chamber Small Business of the Year Winner
CHEERS whole lot going on. Let’s take it apart, shall we? First off, it’s an oatmeal stout. That means the barley is supplemented with oats as a base for the beer malt. Oats are common grain in Scotland and England and were probably included in most early beers in the region before barley became the go-to grain for brewers. Oats give a

stout a warmth and a, well, a stoutness, that serves the style well. Then we have chocolate; two kinds, apparently. And it’s imported at that. Founders isn’t messing around with any of those domestically-grown cocoa beans! Beer descriptions are a very pretentious, which is a large part of the reason I include them. They are a prime target for poking fun. But in all seriousness, chocolate is a great addition to stouts and porters, and this beer uses it well. Lastly we have coffee. I mean, why not? If you are having oatmeal, why not coffee? Breakfast Stout indeed. With chocolate, of course. I can joke about trying too hard to cram in too much all day, but it would be a lie. This beer is delicious. Every one of its many parts works smoothly with the others to blend into a truly satisfying, if a little complex, beer. And if 8.3% ABV doesn’t start your day off right, I got nothing else for ya.

SHOWCASE Music & Poetry
New sounds for the Spring, local venues continue to deliver great entertainment. STORY BY AMI BROWN
T
he Odell Williamson Auditorium and Little Brunswick Theatre offer two very different opportunities for artistry and entertainment. From rock and roll to poetic beauty... have a look. The End Of America April 8, 2018, Listen Up Brunswick Odell Williamson Auditorium The End of America is a band of friends, singers and travelers who blend three-part harmony with rock and Americana. The Philadelphia-based outfit masters a style that resonates with fans of Ryan Adams, CSNY and Dawes. All frontmen of previous bands, Brendon Thomas, James Downes and Trevor Leonard met on tour in 2005. They went on to form a trio that highlights their vocal chemistry and captures the raw honesty of their performances. TEOA recently released their debut LP (self-titled), a follow-up to their previous EPs, Shakey and Steep Bay. The band name was inspired from Jack Kerouac’s novel, On The Road, as he describes traveling to the end of the groaning continent. Travel inspires us and we live for the trips to familiar and foreign destinations, to discover, write and sing the songs that we create on our journeys. The End of America is a band of friends, singers and travelers who blend three-part harmony with rock and Americana. The Philadelphia-based outfit harnesses a style that resonates with fans of Ryan Adams, CSNY and Dawes. All front men of previous bands, Brendon Thomas, James Downes and Trevor Leonard met on tour in 2005. They went on to form a trio that highlights their vocal chemistry and captures the raw honesty of their performances. TEOA recently released their debut LP (self-titled), a follow-up to their previous EPs, Shakey and Steep Bay. The new album was written in the wake of a series of close calls: one involving a van accident on tour, and the other
when drummer Jarrod Pedone was involved in a hit-and-run that left him in a coma for months. Fortunately the band walked away unscathed, and Jarrod made a stunning recovery. The following winter all members relocated to Philadelphia to write and hone their new sound. Joining forces with longtime friend and engineer Dave Downham in the producer’s chair, the band tracked 11 new songs at nearby Gradwell House Recordings in Haddon Heights, NJ. With the album released, the band has spent the last hear in a heavy rotation of touring. Anyone who has seen TEOA can attest to their powerful harmonies and stage presence. The End of America has performed at SXSW, Savannah Stopover and the Philadelphia Folk Fest. They have shared the stage with Graham Nash, Old Crow Medicine Show, Larry Campbell, David Bromberg, Gary Louris (The Jayhawks), Simone Felice (The Felice Brothers) and joined Beck in Los Angeles to perform for his Song Reader sheet music release show. The trio’s appearance at the show aired live on KCRW and received praise from Spin, Filter and The Hollywood Reporter.
THE END OF AMERICA their original poetry to read to other poets and poetry lovers. Sign-up begins at 7PM. The readings begin at 7:30 PM in room 1B, the first building behind the main auditorium. For those who would rather just listen, great! The session will end when all the poets have had a turn. There will be cook-
ies and a donation box to defray the cost of the cookies. Brunswick Little Theatre is located at 8068 River Rd (H’way NC 87), SE, Southport, NC 28165. For more information, contact Ken Greenman at 914456- 0132 or ngreenman46@aol.com .
POETRY Brunswick Little Theatre to Hosts Open Mic Poetry Readings Brunswick Little Theatre’s first and second Open Mic Poetry Readings were so successful that they have decided to host poetry readings every month this year. The next reading will be at 7:00 pm Friday, April 6. Subsequent sessions will be May 4, June 1, July 6, August 3, September 7, and October 5. The dates are not yet set for November and December. Q&A
HEALTH
Ask Leslie! Health Questions Made Simple
Q
Leslie Reschly, BSN RN
uestion: I moved here four years ago and have developed seasonal allergies which occur every spring. What can I do? I have never had allergies before!
Welcome to Southport! Allergy symptoms occur because you have an intact and functioning immune system. Your body perceives a “foreign” substance and your immune system begins to react in hopes of removing the substance, also known as the allergen. In some, this allergen that provokes an immune response perceived as harmful may be pollen, pet dander or even a certain food which causes other people no effect. When the body comes in contact with the specific allergen, it may inflame the nose, sinuses or airways, the skin or even the gastrointestinal tract. Symptoms depend not only on the substance but also on the immune response which can cause mild to severe symptoms. In the case of seasonal allergies, the most likely allergen causing you problems is airborne pollens from the trees and plants beginning to bloom as the weather warms. A quick look to the hood of your car gives you a hint as to the degree of yellow pollen currently enveloping Southport. Typical symptoms are those of allergic rhinitis or inflamed upper airways such as sneezing, itching or your eyes or nose often described as burning, red and watering eyes and a runny or stuffy nose combined with sneezing. Complications sometimes develop from these symptoms and present as asthma, sinusitis or ear and lung infections. It is important to note that many people mistake the symptoms of severe allergic rhinitis for sinusitis and want an antibiotic which will NOT improve your symptoms.
Luckily, over the past several years, many medications used to treat seasonal allergies have been moved from prescription status to over-the counter availability. These include oral antihistamine medications which block the chemical released by your immune system that causes your symptoms. Typically, these medications like diphenhydramine may cause you to be drowsy but there are others such as Cetirizine, Desloratidine, Fexofenadine and Loratadine which are less likely to put you asleep at your work desk. In addition, many of these medications are formulated in combination with decongestants to further improve your stuffy symptoms. Caution comes with decongestant use because although they often give quick relief, they are not indicated if you have high blood pressure, heart disease, thyroid disease, are pregnant or have glaucoma. In addition, decongestants often dry your respiratory passages out too much causing you to feel worse. Instead of taking a pill, nasal sprays are available in antihistamine, steroid and decongestant varieties which aid in the alleviation of nasal congestion and irritation and sinus congestion. Be sure to follow label instructions as use of nasal decongestant sprays for longer then 3 days may make your symptoms worse!! Antihistamine eye drops are available over-the-counter for treatment of your eye-associated allergy symptoms. Steroid medications can also be used to diminish the response of your body and decrease inflammation in your ears, lungs
and nose. These include corticosteroid nasal sprays, inhalers, eye drops as well as oral tablets. Check with your pharmacist as there are some nasal sprays and eye drops that are over-the-counter while others require a prescription. Allergy shot immunotherapy is often prescribed in severe cases; this requires testing and receiving shots in increased strength before continuing on a maintenance dose. Avoidance of the allergen is certainly the best prevention but often not practical as in the case of the “yellow clouds” swarming our town. If possible, remain inside with windows closed. Choose medications which are appropriate for your symptoms. Many people find relief in use of saline nasal irrigation through a squeeze bottle or neti pot. Be sure to follow directions on your neti pot to prevent further infections.
The use of local honey has been reported to decrease allergy symptoms but results have not been duplicated scientifically. Honey has been used as a cough suppressant and purportedly has anti-inflammation properties which makes sense that it would help allergy symptoms. In addition, local honey that is not commercially filtered or pasteurized contains traces of pollen so ingesting honey would give a person repeated exposure to the pollen allergen in small amounts –almost like an allergy shot! However, never give honey to an infant less than 1 year of age to prevent the risk of botulism. Whatever your cause of seasonal allergies, do rest assured that it will pass. Choose the appropriate treatment for your symptoms and seek medical care from your health care provider if needed. - Leslie Reschly, BSN RN

Get a good start on the growing season with this gardener’s to-do list for April.
April the garden’s busiest month? Suddenly, there’s so much to do, like start putting a garden in. Many websites put up monthly task lists, often suited to their specific region. Here’s some April gardening tips and chores that have served well over the years.
Before the afternoon presentations, we invite participants to visit Southport’s coffee venues
* Fertilize fall-planted garlic with a high-nitrogen source, like blood meal or bat guano. Got onion sets that over-wintered? Now’s the time to start hitting them with nitrogen boosts, maybe fish fertilizer, periodically until their tops go soft and wilt in the coming summer.
3:00 p.m. - Lecture presentation by Cape Fear Riverkeeper, Kemp Burdette, at the Southport Baptist Church CMC, E. Nash Street. (1.5 - 2 hrs.)
and restaurants.
1:30 p.m. - Documentary movie showing at Southport Baptist Church CMC, 102 E. Nash Street. (45 mins.) Flight of the Butterflies - It took Dr. Fred Urquhart almost 40 years to discover the monarch butterflies’ secret hideaway and prove the most incredible migration on Earth. Following the year-long annual migration cycle of the butterflies, the award-winning production team filmed hundreds of millions of monarchs in their remote overwintering sanctuaries in Mexico. The movie is 45 minutes in length and is suitable for all ages. Free.
April Gardening Chores
The Cape Fear River, its Beauty and its Challenges - The Cape Fear is North Carolina’s largest river basin and nearly one-third of the state’s population lives within the watershed. The ecological diversity of the ape Fear watershed is astounding, from the salt marshes at the mouth to the blackwater swamps, and ancient cypress trees. The beauty of the river is awe-inspiring, and at times under appreciated. Cape Fear Riverkeeper, Kemp Burdette has been the Cape ear’s prominent spokesperson on the topics of coal ash retention ponds, confined animal farming operations, concrete industry siting, and most recently GenX. Free. Plan to spend the day in Southport and enjoy what nature has to offer. Come to one event or all, it’s your choice. For up to date information, visit the Southport NatureFest
* Sow early spring greens, including leaf lettuce and spinach for early season harvest. Now’s the time to plant asparagus crowns for years of returns. * Turn and aerate compost piles. Screen any compost you’ll be applying in the next few weeks so that it will be ready when you need it. * Go after lawn pests: Grubs of various sorts (like those of the Japanese beetle) and sod webworms take advantage of spring to feed near the surface. Now’s the time to inspect your lawn for dead and fading patches or soft spongy areas where grubs may have destroyed the turf’s roots. You might spot the grubs themselves. Hit them with an Organic spray while they’re vulnerable. * Practice patience: Still waiting for spring to… well, spring? Be patient. Don’t start working your garden before the soil is ready to avoid compaction. Monitor those soil temperatures for proper germination temperatures for particular seed with a soil thermometer. * Fruit trees: Spring pruning of fruit trees is best done early. If you’re going to spray trees with a horticultural oil — now’s the time– use one that has negligible toxicity and degrades quickly in the environment. * Plant shrubs and root stock: avoid bare root stock if you’re planning to plant strawberries or woody fruits like grapes and raspberries. Instead, buy them in containers. Water and fertilizer as your indoor plants get more window light. Spring is the time for growth, even indoors. - Source: www.planetnatural.com
