pring is here! Finally! We are always fans of spring, but this year’s just seems a little more magical. The pandemic made this winter one of the longest, toughest I can remember. Some days it felt like it would never end. Winter, the stupid plague, take your pick, neither seemd like it was ever going away. But today the sun is shining, it’s 71 degrees outside, vaccines are quickly becoming readily to available to all, and, though thismay seem silly to you, our Calendar pages are filling up.
W
atching the entries on our events calendar near the end of each issue disappear a year ago this month and pretty much stay gone for a few issues, was hard. It means so much more than just “something to do.”These events are part of the life of our community. Seeing them slowly increase has been nice, but this month they popped. Take a look. We have markets and tours and concerts and movies. Even the Kiwanis Plant Sale is back. Hang in there gang. It’s going to be quite a summer.

Re-Modeled Motel Re-Opens
As for their regular clientele, the Boiling Spring Lakes Motel sees guests of all types. Families, traveling contractors, and even guests chasing nostalgia after staying at the BSL Motel in the past. “We’ve had folks come in and say ‘I used to come here in the ’80s! Boy, it has changed!’” Bodmer said.

L
ocated right off Highway 87 heading into Southport, the Boiling Spring Lakes Motel has been a landmark in the area since it was built in 1962. Now, following Hurricane Florence and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the new owners have proudly reopened the motel after a full renovation and added a touch of rock n’ roll.
Back in December 2018, local home renovators Bobby Goshell and Stephanie Bodmer bought the roadside motel. They had just finished a project in the area and were well aware of the effects Hurricane Florence had on the Boiling Spring Lakes community. Since they purchased the motel, Bobby and Stephanie have been hard at work refurbishing every aspect of the property. “The footprint is the same, but we took it down all the way to the studs,” Goshell said. Leading up to their grand re-opening, they chronicled the renovation on their Facebook page. Beds, tubs, and everything you’d expect to find in a motel is brand new. Outdoor decorations and furniture consist of up-cycled finds from all over, leaving many surprises to be
found by and delight guests during their stay such as a “life-size” Sasquatch figure lurking in the nearby trees on the property. The rooms themselves boast a fresh yet familiar feeling. Bright colors, psychedelic accents, and rock n’ roll imagery have been added throughout the property. Each room is equipped with a lava lamp, original tour posters from bands like Grateful Dead, and portraits of rock stars such as the late David Bowie. On display in the lobby, you can even find a guitar hanging on the wall signed by rock legend Alice Cooper. Local artist Gator Cove Pottery provided the motel with handcrafted mugs and soap dishes for the rooms in addition to a unique plaque found in the lobby. The

landscaping of the property was done by Ernie Sirani. Stephanie and Bobby pride themselves on the motel’s outside spaces. Grills and outdoor dining areas can be found just as you exit the rooms, and a new smoking/sitting area is located near the parking lot furnished with some oneof-a-kind accents. When asked how COVID had affected their business and day-to-day operations, Bodmer said that other than a few cancellations around the holidays they had not suffered much loss of business since they reopened last November. Even then, they understood that that was when the virus was at its peak and that people were making the safest choices for their families. As for the daily operations, the housekeeping staff, which consists of only Bodmer and her mother Carroll Wolfe, have made cleaning the rooms a special routine. “We come in with a commercial disinfectant and disinfect every touchable surface. Light switches, tabletops, lamps, doorknobs, you name it,” Bodmer said, adding that they spend up to an hour cleaning each room, where the “industry standard” only requires 20 minutes. In addition to the strict cleaning routine, guests have the option of a fully “No Contact” stay. Every room has a lockbox located outside where the guest can
Some changes since that time haven’t exactly been positive. Since the damage done to the Sanford Dam back in the fall of 2018, the scenic lakeside attraction is still missing its lake. Bodmer is hopeful that when the lake is restored it will bring even more interested guests. They have plans to add some sand to the waterline, and even a dock on the property for folks to get the whole lake experience. In the meantime, they are continually improving the location with the addition of outdoor fireplaces and seating

CURRENTS areas. With only six rooms on the property, the Boiling Spring Lakes Motel is a quiet and intimate location. Even as close as you are to the busy Hwy 87, you don’t hear the traffic that often goes by. Staying there is more affordable and lacks the often-seen beach aesthetic one finds in similar locations in the area making this little gem stand out for travelers looking for something different while visiting BSL and the surrounding areas. Working together as a family, Bodmer, Goshell, and Wolfe have helped this location rise from the ashes and have created a comfortable family at-
mosphere with just enough rock and roll flair to make a stay here unique, memorable, and fun for all who visit. To book a stay, you can simply visit their Facebook page, or call them at (910) 845-2893.

CURRENTS Welcoming Everyone Education Curator Works To Make Maritime Museum Accessible To All
STORY BY CAROL PEARSON, PHOTOS BY JEFFREY STITES
E
ntering through the main door of the North Carolina Maritime Museum in Southport on a recent spring day, I was greeted by the sounds of hammering and laughter. It was a fitting introduction for my visit; both those sounds help tell the story of the work being done to make the museum more accessible and inclusive. As Curator of Education Katy Menne explained, the hammering means a rack is being installed by the main desk, ready to hold a brand new set of eight brightly colored “sensory backpacks” to be used by visitors to the museum. “Sensory backpacks include things you can interact with on your visit to make it more enjoyable,” Menne said. “For example, if someone doesn’t like to sit still, or likes to carry something with them, you’ve got lots of different options to keep your hands busy. “New environments can be scary no matter how old you are, or what your ability level,” Menne continued. “These backpacks can help ease the transition from familiar surroundings to new places, and create a more enjoyable experience.” As the first Certified Autism Center in the state of North Carolina, the museum is doing some groundbreaking work on accessibility and inclusion, and the backpacks are just one part of the staff’s commitment to serving visitors with autism.
The staff is also creating a “safe space,” tucked in a quiet corner of the museum, where a visitor can go and be by themselves and recenter during their visit. Safe spaces, with dim lights, soft surroundings and minimal sensory input, are often recommended for those with autism, behavioral challenges or learning difficulties. Menne is excited about what projects like this can mean to the museum’s visitors. “Some people like sensory input, some like noise-cancelling headphones to stay calm, sometimes light is too much so there are sunglasses in the backpack, things to self-regulate,” she explained, pulling out various items from one of the backpacks. The museum is also working to create a more immersive experience for the hearing impaired, thanks to a new semi-guided video tour that includes spoken English, closed captions and American Sign Language (ASL). The video tour originally came about as a way to replace the in-person tours that were suspended due to COVID-19 restrictions, but the team quickly realized it was an excellent tool for those with hearing challenges. “This is a way to be more inclusive and reach more people, and share the rich maritime history and culture of this area,” Menne said. One of the challenges in creating a more inclusive muse-

um experience was finding the right expertise to help develop programs like these. “I am not an expert in ASL or what we need for the vision-impaired or physically challenged, so we are partnering with the people and organizations that do know how to make our experience more accessibly,” she said. The staff, headed by Museum Manager Lori Sanderlin, partners with organizations Above, Below: Katy menne with sensory backpacks
to make the museum more accessible to the blind and low vision community, for example, including the Department of Health and Human Services, the Southport Lions Club as well as the Governor Moorehead School for visually impaired students in Raleigh. The museum also partners with Cape Fear Community College, and received hands-on help and expertise for the sensory backpack project. The interns helped define what should go in the backpacks and how they would be used. Talking to Menne, her passion and talent for this work is obvious … and it is earning her and the museum recognition even beyond this community. In October, Menne was named the 2020 recipient of the Emerging Museum Professionals Award, given by the Southeastern Museums Conference. “Of course it was a huge honor and thrilling to be recognized for our work,” she said. “I am so grateful for the people I work with and the organizations that partner with us to make so much of this possible.” She credits Sanderlin and the rest of the staff for being incredibly supportive of her ideas. “I pitch them ideas and they say ‘yep, great, let’s do this’ or ‘let try this instead’,” she said. “Lori [Sanderlin], our manager here, is so gung-ho about how can we make the museum experience better and more inclusive and reach more people.” This idea of accessibility is front and center to the work Menne and the rest of the team are doing as the museum. They work with schools and community groups not just from Brunswick County, but New Hanover, Pender, Columbus and Robeson counties too.

Physical access is a challenge for a lot of these outlying communities, so Menne often traveled to these areas to bring museum programs to them … until the pandemic changed that approach. “Since COVID hit, we’ve tried with our digital programming to make our museum remotely accessible and inclusive as well. For example, if I’m reading a story, I’m also describing what pictures you’d be seeing, making the program more immer-
sive for people with low vision or blindness, or even if it’s just challenging to see the images with the glare from the shiny pages,” she said. Menne predicts it will remain challenging for school groups to travel to the museum, at least for the near future. So the question now is how can the museum staff work within these restraints and still be a vibrant, inclusive organization. While COVID certainly added some challenges

CURRENTS for the museum staff, it has also helped the museum grow in unexpected ways. “This ASL tour was officially rolled out in November,” Menne said, “but we were working on it during our closure. The filming of this was right at the beginning of the lockdowns last spring. During the six months we were closed last year we really tried to focus on how we were going to implement this vision of accessibility and inclusion, so when we do reopen we have all of these incredible things ready to go.” “The backpacks, for instance, have been ready since November, but we’ve only just put them out last week. We are so excited to be able to offer these,” she said. Projects in the works include a fully guided ASL tour (the current one is semi-guided), plus working with 3D printing experts to get some of the delicate artifacts that can’t be handled recreated so visitors can hold a replica in their hands. “Really, all of the things that we’re pushing forward with, anyone can enjoy them,” Menne said. “Whoever you are, whatever you bring that day, whatever your abilities or challenges, you’re going to learn, you’re going to have fun, you’ll be welcomed, you’ll be part of our crew.” While they can’t guarantee there will

Area Charity Shops Offer Savings and Surprises While Helping Our Community STORY AND PHOTOS BY JEFFREY STITES

harity thrift stores are a win-win proposition. Shoppers can find just want they’re looking for or perhaps an unexpected treasure, get it at a great price, and know they are supporting their community in the process. When our son seemed to be outgrowing his band shoes every few months, we were able to keep up without breaking our budget thanks to the Communities In Schools Thrift Shop in Southport. Now all of the Southport area charity thrifts have joined together to create a Thrift Shop Trail that will kick off with a special event on Saturday, April 17 featuring sales and special giveaways at each shop. “The Thrift Shop Trail includes CIS shops and other area thrift shops that are working to raise money and support area nonprofits. Participating thrift shops are the CIS Thrift Shop Boiling Spring Lakes, CIS Thrift Shop Southport, Dosher Hospital Flea Market, Habitat for Humanity Restore Southport, Hope Chest Oak Island, Hope Chest Supply/ Bolivia, and Sheltered Treasures,” said Todd Beane, CIS Thrift Shop Operations Director and the man behind the Thrift Shop trail idea.

“The Thrift Shop Trail will be a simple route where a shopper can go to seven different area thrift shops that support nonprofit organizations in Brunswick County. With assistance from the Southport-Oak Island Chamber, we developed a brochure featuring the seven thrift shops,” Beane said. “The bro-

Thrift shops can be an import part of a nonprofit’s funding, and that is certainly true for CIS. “CIS Thrift Shops assist in raising funds to support Communities In Schools Action for Success dropout prevention program in Brunswick County schools,” Beane said. We have Action for Success programs located in Cedar Grove Middle School, Leland Middle School, Shallotte Middle School, South Brunswick Middle School, Town Creek Middle School, Waccamaw School (K-8), and Supply Elementary School.” Beane said regular customers enjoy thrift shops for their wide selection of donated items, often name brand items, always at low prices. “Thrift shops are so much fun!” He said, “There are treasures that can be found

Customers should always be happy about shopping at thrift shops because it saves them money with the great pricing, helps the environment by keeping things out of the landfill, and customers know that every single purchase made goes toward helping students, at risk women and children, families without safe housing, or supporting whatever cause and organization the thrift shop raises funds to help.” Area thrift stores are hoping for a good come-back this summer after the challenges of COVID. “Area thrift shops like other retail businesses, were greatly impacted by the pandemic. After being closed for almost two months, most were able to open back up but with reduced customer capacity, mandatory six foot social distancing, and the required wearing of masks by any staff, volunteer or customer. Constant disinfecting and cleaning of common areas and frequently touched surfaces to protect everyone was also a new routine multiple times throughout
the day. Shop capacity limits have slowly risen since reopening with restrictions easing. Now that more and more people are getting vaccinated we are witnessing more customers coming out to shop regularly. All Southport Oak Island area thrift shops are hopeful for a summer season of strong retail,” said Beane.

Plant Sale Returns Kiwanis Bring Back Their Popular Fundraiser In A New Location STORY BY LISA STITES
S
pring is coming, and many of us are itching to get things planted. Whether you’re looking for something ornamental to beautify your green space or if fresh herbs for cooking are more your style, the Southport Oak-Island Kiwanis Club Plant Sale is a great opportunity to help your garden grow and nourish the community as well. The plant sale started in 2002, said Larry Trainor, member of the Southport-Oak Island Kiwanis. Trainor has been in charge of the group’s plant sale since 2016. The sale is normally part of Southport Spring Festival, but since the festival was cancelled this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Kiwanis are moving forward with the plant sale in a different location this year. The sale will just be one day, from 10 am
to 3 pm on Saturday, April 17, in the rear parking lot of the St. James Community Center (4136 Southport-Supply Road). The sale will feature the signature twice-blooming encore azaleas, other flowering plants such as gardenias and roses, a few varieties of tomato plants and lettuces, and lots of herbs, including basil, mint, cilantro, and even parsley, sage,

rosemary, and thyme. With the uncertainty of whether the plant sale would happen this year, the group got a late start in ordering plants. Trainor said they normally begin ordering the azaleas from a nursery in Alabama after Thanks-

giving, but didn’t order until January this year. Other plants come from Wilmington and Little River, and the herbs come from Shelton Herb Farm in Leland. “It’s always a good to get idea to get plants grown locally because they will thrive in this environment,” Trainor said.

CURRENTS Pre-ordering with delivery is also an option. Anyone interested in ordering ahead of time can email Trainor at ltrainor13@yahoo.com for a list of available plants and prices. The idea of selling plants for a fundraiser got its roots in St. James in 2002, when resident Tom Pezanowski started selling encore azaleas, Trainor explained. Pezanowski started putting flyers in mailboxes; the flowering shrubs were delivered to, and sold from, his driveway. Trainor said 280 azaleas were sold that first year. Pezanowski became a Kiwanis member shortly thereafter, and the sale became an annual fundraising event. A Master Gardener, Pexanowski also grows plants such as elephant ears and amaryllis, and sells them himself to supplement the fundraiser. Trainor said that effort has raised almost $300 so far this year. Profits from the sale help support the Kiwanis’ many youth programs in Brunswick County - Key Club, Teen & Peer courts, Terrific Kids, Royal Readers and Listening Post - as well as provide $20,000 (annually) in scholarships for deserving high school
seniors and to Brunswick Community College students, according to a release from the club. During these difficult times, they say the need is even greater. Trainor joined the Kiwanis in 2015, and got involved in the plants sale the next year. He said he was approached about taking a leadership position, and had a choice between the golf tournament and the plant sale. “My wife and I both love gardening. I thought that it would be something fun and a good way to be involved,” he said.
All In Bloom is all in bloom for Spring! Come F ind Everything For Your Garden
Community service is what it’s all about, and the plant sale is just one way the Kiwanis fund the many programs the group provides for Brunswick County children. “It’s very good for the students. You can tell they’re very appreciative, and that goes a long way” Trainor said.

Connecting Southport New System Keeps the City In Touch With Residents, Businesses and Visitors STORY BY JEFFREY STITES
W
e are bombarded with information today more than ever before in human history. The little phones we carry in our pockets have become powerful computers connected to the entire world, but as wonderful as that is, the abundance of data sometimes makes it feel more difficult to connect to the news we really need, the news about our own community. The City of Southport has a solution that it hopes will keep its residents, businesses and visitors in the loop and Southport Connected. The Southport Connected! Community Information System now allows the city to get its message out immediately and to target that message to the people who need to receive it most. From emergency alerts to weather updates to traffic and road closures to general community news, the system will use secure messaging via phone, email and/or text to notify its users of all the news they want. Anyone interested, from Southport residents to business owners to visitors, must sign up for the service, and Southport’s Tourism and Communication Department has worked hard to make the process as easy as possible. “We looked at the people who had trouble signing up for the vaccine and learned from that. We know we have to make this easy to understand,” said Southport’s Director of Tourism and Communications Randy Jones. The web page www.cityofsouthport. com/southportconnected hosts a com-
plete overview of the Southport Connected! Tool and a video explaining step-bystep how to sign up.
ness owners last year as the pandemic forced closures and the sewer project closed parts of Southport’s roadways they expressed concern with the city’s communication. “I want them to know we listened,” said Jones. The city’s visitors center and museum in Fort Johnston has been closed since the beginning of the pandemic and Jones said he and his staff have used the downtime to work on the city’s communications efforts. “We started

The city used federal CARES Act funding to finance the Southport CONNECTED! System, Jones said. Brunswick County Emergency Services uses the same provider, but Southport’s system is much more full-featured. Residents already signed up for the county alert system will need to sign up for Southport’s as well, Jones said.

Southport Connected! uses geo-targeting to allow the city to send messages just to those who need to receive them. Southport residents will be able to access the entire range of options while those who live outside the city will be able to sign up for community updates. Business owners can sign up with a business address inside the city limits to also access the entire range of communications. “This is part of a push to get businesses engaged,” said Asst. Director of Communications Lisa Anderson. “We needed a better way to communicate with businesses and this system will allow us to send messages just to businesses within Southport.” For example, the city can send out road closure information concerning the ongoing sewer project that target the businesses in the affected block, said Jones. Jones said that when he spoke to busi-
the newsletter and began live-streaming meetings,” said Jones, “and this was the logical next step.”

Transportation Survey Brunswick County Seeks Citizen Input STORY CONTRIBUTED
How do you travel across Brunswick County? What transportation priorities and improvements are most important to you? Share your experiences, ideas and concerns on the Brunswick County Comprehensive Transportation Survey. Brunswick County and the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) are inviting residents, business-owners, visitors, and other commuters who frequently travel across the county to share their input through the interactive survey. Input will help shape the formation of the Brunswick County Transportation Plan, which will serve as a blueprint for the County’s transportation network for the next 30 years. The survey focuses on all modes of transportation, including: traditional car travel; public transportation options (i.e., buses, shuttles, ferries, etc.); walking and biking; rail service; air service; and other multimodal transportation means. “The more input we receive, the better we can communicate to the State about what Brunswick County’s transportation needs are for future funding allocations,” Planning Director Kirstie Dixon said. “Transportation is an integral factor in our communities’ quality of life, so we are hopeful this survey will resonate and engage with several people in the months to come.” The survey takes about 20 minutes to complete and will remain open through June 9, 2021. Participants are asked to rank their top five goals for the county’s transportation network, gauge how important different modes of travel are to them, and map out areas in the county in need of review for concerns like congestion, maintenance, or other transportation needs. The survey is accessible online in English and Spanish here: • English Survey Link: brunswickcountyctp.metroquest.com
• Español / Spanish Survey Link: brunswickcountyctp-sp.metroquest.com Individuals can also request a paper copy of the survey by contacting the Brunswick County Planning Department at 910-253-2025. Library Seeks Input Local Libraries Write Their Next Chapter STORY BY JEFFREY STITES
O
ur local libraries are a treasure and never have they been as valuable as they have during the pandemic. With schools closed, libraries online offerings helped fill a gap, and now that things are able to open up again, libraries are once again welcoming children and parents inside. The Friends of the Library Southport and Oak Island are asking for help planning a future in which these valuable resources continue to serve our children’s educational needs. The Friends have planned three focus groups to collect input from the community. The first took place at the mend of March, but the next two are open for registration now. Focus groups will be facilitated by “a well-respected library consultant with 30 years in various library leadership roles,” according to the Friends. “For our strategic planning to have the greatest impact, we need real information from you about how are libraries are
serving students in our community. No preparation is required for the meeting,” they said. The focus groups will be asking three main questions: How do you currently use the library? How is the library currently meeting or not meeting your needs? What other resources would you like to see the library offer in the future? The two focus groups coming up in April are as follows:
school librarians, and school administrators
Monday, April 1 at 4 pm for teachers,
Monday , April 19 at 6:30 pm for parents of school-aged children

Coastal Home & Lifestyle Expo 2021
Southport-Oak Island Chamber of Commerce Hosting New Event On Oak Island STORY BY JEFFREY STITES
A
s the summer season starts to wind up, the Southport -Oak Island Chamber of Commerce is hosting a Coastal Home and Lifestyle Showcase to help service providers, contractors, retailers, and food and beverage businesses connect with potential customers. This new annual event takes place on Saturday, May 8 from 10 am - 3 pm in Middleton Park Extension behind the Oak Island town hall. Admission will be free and locals, visitors and out of town homeowners will enjoy free samples, giveaways, food, music and can register for a $200 cash drawing.
Chamber Executive Director Karen Sphar says spring is the perfect time for such an event. “Spring is all about nesting and renewal – the birds are singing louder, the blooms on the trees and flowers are brighter, and people are in a state of mind to make improvements or changes to their homes or lives. An expo focused on how to help people make these changes is perfect in spring.”
The popular Coastal Consumer Showcase hosted by the Chamber has been moved to January and this Home and Lifestyle Expo added to the annual calendar. “We are moving the Coastal Consumer Showcase which is all the different types of businesses in our community to January because it is not weather dependent,” Sphar said. “ The Coastal Home & Lifestyle Showcase naturally lends itself

to spring because its focus is on businesses that can protect, support or create indoor and outdoor living spaces or the activities and health of a person.” “We expect a nice crowd of residents and second homeowners will take the opportunity to Shop Local and get ideas. A business who provides services or products related or supporting the home and lifestyle will want to be seen and take advantage of the opportunity to talk with potential new clients,” Sphar said. “You may not make a sale today but you need to make an impression so that you can close the deal in the future.” Restaurants, bakeries and wineshops are also welcome to participate. “This is a great opportunity for our restaurants and bakeries to get some exposure but also sell direct to those who are in attendance.
People get hungry and thirsty at these events,” she said. However, no alcohol sales will one permitted. This may be a perfect opportunity to join your local Chamber of Commerce. “You don’t have to be a member of the Chamber of Commerce to purchase a display booth,” Sphar said. “However, it is a good time to consider Chamber membership since member businesses receive a discounted booth fee and since we are at the end of the fiscal year, your business will receive 14 months of membership for the price of 12! The event will be following all COVID-19 protocols. Vendors and attendees will be required to wear a face covering. And the booths will be spaced 10 feet apart with one-way traffic through the expo.

Operation Medicine Cabinet Returns Dispose of Unused Medicines Safely STORY CONTRIBUTED The 22nd “Operation Medicine Cabinet” drug drop at Dosher Memorial Hospital is scheduled for Thursday, April 22, from 9 am to1 pm. Local residents are invited to drop off unwanted and expired prescription medications at the hospital front entrance, and law enforcement officers will take what is collected for safe incineration. One of the conveniences of this event is that it is designed so that you can “drive through and drop off,” without having to leave your car. As this spring’s drop-off event coincides with Earth Day, it is a timely reminder that “flushing” unwanted medication is not recommended. Studies have shown that medicines flushed down a household drain can contaminate lakes or streams, hurt fish and wildlife, or potentially end up in water supplies. At Dosher’s last drug drop, in October of 2019, nearly 400 local households discarded more than 8,000 expired or unwanted narcotic pills and nearly 1,280
milliliters of narcotic liquids. After a brief hiatus from Operation Medicine Cabinet at the onset of the COVID pandemic last year, Dosher welcomes the opportunity to be able to provide this service to local residents again, taking several precautions to make the drop off process safe for all.

oin Brunswick County Cooperative Extension for one of its FREE virtual cooking camps during spring break, April 6-8! This year, two camps are being offered. Chop! Chop! Teen Cuisine is a beginner to intermediate camp for youth grade 6-12. 4-H Chopped Virtual Cooking Class & Challenge is open to high school students ages 14 to 18 with prior cooking experience.
Chop! Chop! Teen Cuisine is a great way to develop beginner and intermediate skills in the kitchen. Angie Lawrence, EFNEP Nutrition Educator with Brunswick County, and Nicole Swinson, EFNEP Nutrition Educator with Duplin County, will be co-teaching this camp. Chop! Chop! Teen Cuisine will help teens become self-sufficient in the kitchen while creating healthy eating habits that will last a lifetime. Participants will learn how to properly cut a variety of different fruits
and vegetables and incorporate them into their own recipes. With a chance to make salsa, roast potatoes, and even enter a video cooking contest to show off their cooking skills at the close of camp if they choose, this is a fantastic opportunity for aspiring chefs wishing to learn more about the basics of cooking and knife skills. Kits will be supplied with all materials that are needed. 4-H Chopped Virtual Cooking Class & Challenge is intended for youth who al-
ready have some cooking experience. Morgan King, 4-H Youth Development Extension Agent, and Meghan Lassiter, Family & Consumer Sciences Extension Agent, will be co-teaching this camp. Participants will demonstrate proper knife safety, understand basic nutrition and its effect on the body, and of course taste the results of their hard work with recipes like omelets, baked oatmeal, salad dressing, and soup. On the final day of camp, it’s as if participants become members of a cooking show. They must follow a set of rules, create a dish, explain how and why they made their dish, and perhaps win an award based on their presentation. Are you ready for the challenge? To register for either camp, visit: https://go.ncsu.edu/cookingcamp. For more information, please contact Morgan King, 4-H Youth Development Extension

Guardian Ad Litem Seeks Help April Is Child Abuse Prevention And Child Advocate Month STORY CONRIBUTED
The Brunswick County Guardian ad Litem Program is honoring its volunteers during the month of April, Child Advocate Month, for their commitment, dedication, and perseverance. The Program is also recognizing Child Abuse Prevention Month and assisting in efforts to raise community awareness about child abuse and neglect — the need has never been greater in our district for trained, child advocates according to Guardian ad Litem staff. The Guardian ad Litem Program was established by statute in 1983. The North Carolina Guardian ad Litem Program has been serving abused and neglected children for more than 30 years. There are currently about 5,300 child advocate volunteers serving on abuse and neglect cases in every county in North Carolina. District 13 (Brunswick, Bladen, and Columbus counties) has approximately 100 active volunteers. A Guardian ad Litem child advocate is a trained communi-
ty volunteer who is appointed, along with a Guardian ad Litem attorney, by a district court judge to investigate and determine the needs of abused and neglected children petitioned into the court system by the Depart-
ment of Social Services. If you are interested in volunteering, you can begin by completing your application @ www.volunteerforgal.org or calling 910-253-3922.

Oak Island’s First Brewery Is Coming
Solar Brewing To Offer Craft Beer and More STORY AND PHOTOS BY JEFFREY STITES
W
e are huge fans of shooting for the stars when pursuing our dreams, so when Michael Bartlett told us he hoped beer from the new restaurant and brewery he’s building on Oak Island Drive across from Shagger Jack’s would be the first beer to be brewed and served in space, we got it. “That’s one of the reasons for the Solar Brewing name,” he said. But first he needs to finish construction on Oak Island’s first brewery, which he hopes to open in late summer or early fall this year. Solar Brewing will be a family-friendly brewery/restaurant with 16 taps and a menu based on pizza and wings, but with a Mediterranean flair. Bartlett said his travels around the world have left him with a healthy respect for multiculturalism that he wants to see reflected in his menu. While pizza will be the menu staple, his specials will feature international cuisine, he said. After practicing home brewing since the early 1990s, Bartlett, who also holds degrees in Physics, Math and Technology, earned a certificate in Brewing and Distilling Technology from Schoolcraft College in his native Michigan. As part of the program, he drafted a plan for a brewery/restaurant for a group project that has become his plan for Solar Brewing. “I got free consulting help
from my classmates,” he said. While Bartlett himself is a self-described malt-head, he plans to use his 16 taps to offer a wide variety of brews with his flagship variety being a cream ale. “I wanted something that would have wide appeal,” he said. “Our research told us the Oak Island area holds a lot of wine drinkers, and we wanted to have something that they would enjoy.” Having a brewery and restaurant together could even offer some interesting possibilities for pizza. “Do you know the difference between brewers’ yeast and bakers’ yeast?” He asked. “Nothing.” He said that using the brewers’ yeast he will cultivate for the beer will take longer to make pizza dough rise, it would also import some of the flavor

Bartlett’s plans back a bit from his original timeline, he said he has been enjoying the process of creating a brewing business, and has made

Brewing a welcoming spot for everyone. “I want everyone to feel comfortable coming in and bringing their dog, or their kids,” he said. He designed Solar Brewing as a restaurant/Brewery hybrid rather than a tap room so that it could attract the widest audience possible. “People on vacation will come in as a family,” he said, “and there will be something for all of them.” He is toying with the idea of homemade soft drinks
to complement his alcoholic offerings. Bartlett said he wants to share his love of brewing and, with a background as a teacher, looks forward to offering guided tours of his brewing operation as well as filling bellies and quenching thirsts. Undefeated General
Hear His Story At Civil War Round Table STORY CONTRIBUTED
G
eneral George Henry Thomas, a native of Virginia, was an undefeated Union general who played a key role in winning the Civil War. His character was extraordinary, and his loyalty to the Union cause was beyond reproach. Yet, he failed to achieve the historical acclaim of some of his contemporaries such as Generals Grant and Sherman. Learn the reasons why, and hear all about his exemplary performance in numerous battles throughout the war from returning guest speaker, Brian Steele Wills, Ph.D., at the Tuesday, April 6 Zoom meeting of the Brunswick Civil War Round Table. The meeting begins at 7 pm and everyone is invited. Membership is required; email Brunswickcwrt@gmail.com to join. The meeting begins at 7 pm on Tuesday, Feb 2 via Zoom, and all members are invited to attend. Not a member? Email Brunswickcwrt@gmail.com to join prior to the meeting. Annual membership dues are $25. The Battle of New Market was fought on May 15, 1864, in Virginia during the Valley
Campaign of 1864. A makeshift Confederate army of 4,100 men led by Confederate General Breckinridge, which included cadets from the Virginia Military Institute (VMI), defeated Union General Franz Sigel and his Army of the Shenandoah. On the winning side, Breckinridge was a politician who served as the 14th Vice-Pres-

COMMUNITY he fought in numerous noteworthy battles, including New Market and Cold Harbor, before serving as the final Confederate Secretary of War in 1865. On the losing side, Franz Sigel was an intriguing historical figure. In losing the Battle of New Market, he failed to provide a campaign victory General Ulysses S. Grant wanted in the Shenandoah Valley. Sigel was a fantastic organizer, loyal to his friends, valued education, understood the value of image and influence, and loved the ideals of freedom and liberty. Yet he struggled with leadership, which hampered his military career. His two great blunders in the New Market Campaign were the loss of confidence from his regimental commanders, and piece-mealing his army into the battle. His commanders did not fully trust him or understand his orders, sometimes even speaking to his troops in German when frustrated on the battlefield. The end result at New Market, two generals, two different lifestyles, and one conclusion, a victory for the South. Exploring Painting During Stay at Home STORY BY CARLA EDSTROM
T
he world hit a milestone that most of us want to let go into history as a forgotten memory. COVID-19 has now been a part of our lives for an entire year with effects globally. Aside from those who got the virus and those who had to work, many people found themselves on a mandatory stay-at-home vacation last March. Some dove into hobbies, some caught up on housecleaning and some fought depression. Artist Vicki Neilon was able to pull herself up out of her own sadness and paint. The result is her bold and colorful work that uplifts your soul and leads your escape into the canvas. “I believe that the coronavirus, as horrible as it is, was a blessing in disguise,” she said. “It has inspired me to create happy, colorful paintings. When the coronavirus first reared its ugly head and we were told to stay home, I went through a period of sadness. When we were told not to even go walking on the beach for
three weeks, I got very upset. I could walk 100 feet from the beach on the sidewalk, but we couldn’t walk on the beach? So, in order to get out of my funk, I started painting pictures that made me happy, colorful boat scenes, paintings that showed a window looking out at the beach,” she said. “Everyone seemed to love my new paint-
ings and I sold several as I would post them on Facebook. It always helped when I would have a glass of wine in the painting!” A retired elementary school teacher who graduated from New Mexico State University, Neilon and her
Neilon’s work is reminiscent of the beautiful New Mexico landscape. Her time living there greatly influenced her bold and stark colorful painting style. I was blessed to live in Albuquerque for seven years and seeing Neilon’s Southwestern influenced work takes me back to the beauty of the desert. “I wish I lived part time in New Mexico and the Southwest. There are so many amazingly beautiful, colorful scenes that are just begging me to paint them.

The multi-colored rocks and landscapes, not to mention the beautiful clouds or sunsets and sunrises are an artists’ dream. I loved the trip to Taos and took many pictures of the adobe buildings. I have a huge supply of photos which will inspire me to relieve those memories of living and visiting
New Mexico.” Describing herself as an artist who is continuously evolving, Neilon’s approach to painting is superfluid and changing, keeps her work fresh and challenging. “Sometimes I will use a
picture that I have taken and paint from it. Using a sketch from a photo to get your composition right is helpful. Other times I just use my creativity and no photos. Some days I just start putting paint on my canvas and it develops into a funky abstract with no rhyme or reason. It might get changed around several times before I see images in it. I started out very structured

I still go back and forth with my style as my mood dictates it,” she said “I would probably label myself mostly as a realistic abstract expressionist, but I do like to switch over to
and gradually loosen up and lately have become very funky,” she said. “I love my new work and it has become my signature style, although, I still love to paint my more realistic ones. Abstract paintings are very freeing so I enjoy doing them as well. However, how I feel at the moment is how and what I paint,” she said.

Myths About Aging
Don’t Believe The Hype About Getting Old BY BRIAN TULLY, MS
A
s we move through life, one of our primary goals is to be able to continue to do all the things we want, need, and like to do. And being able to do all these things easier, better, and with little to no discomfort is the ultimate goal. But too often we give up this quest and begin writing things off, as unable to do anymore, simply because we are getting too old to do it. This doesn’t have to be the case. Yes, we are all going to accumulate years, but we don’t have to get “old.” Believe it or not, we actually have some control over this.
As a society we have grown to accept numerous myths, negative stereotypes, and misconceptions associated with aging and what it means to grow old. However, there is good reason to not take these as truths. Myth #1 - To be old is to be sick This myth centers around the belief that aging and disease go hand in hand and individuals are destined to wind up in the nursing home or suffering from a catastrophic illness once they get older. While the prevalence of chronic diseases increases with advancing age, a large number of mature adults are healthy, robust and without any significant functional limitations. Even in advanced old age there are individuals that attain incredible heights of athleticism and fitness.
tors in how much cognitive decline occurs with advancing age. Myth #3 - The horse is out of the barn It is often believed that once an individual is older it is “too late” to reduce disease risk, increase health status or become fit. There is an overwhelming
amount of evidence to show that this is not true. The physiologic capacity for positive adaptation is not lost even in advanced age. For example, resistance exercise studies conducted on individuals in their 90s found that skeletal muscle can still grow and become stronger. We now know that it is never too late to positively benefit from an exercise program. Myth #4 - The secret to successful aging is to choose your parents wisely Genetics definitely influence disease risk and longevity but their effects are grossly overestimated. There are some specific diseases that have strong hereditary components, such as some forms of cancer or familial hypercholesterolemia, and studies on centenarians show that there is a genetic influence on their longevity. However, the overall evidence is clear that the influence of lifestyle and environment are far more important factors in the determination of health and functional ability than genetics. Myth #5: The lights may be on but the voltage is low The implication of this myth is that
mature adults become weak and uninterested in sex. Research shows that although the frequency of sexual relations declines, both men and women remain interested and active (if there is compatible partner) well into their 70’s and often beyond. The desire for relational intimacy, in many forms, can remain strong and can, in fact, be a positive factor for continued health and longevity. It is time we stop believing the myths surrounding aging and realize that it is never has to be “too late” to travel the world, work in the garden, take up a new sport, play with the kids/grandkids and watch them grow up. It is also never “too early” to start focusing on healthy lifestyle behaviors. So, don’t believe it, continue to add the years to your life, but refuse to get old. If you have any questions or other thoughts to share, I would love to hear from you! Brian@BetterTogetherFitness.com BetterTogetherFitness.com
Myth #2 – You can’t teach an old dog new tricks Similar to myth #1, this is the belief that senility and dementia are not only a natural part of the aging process but are inevitable. Recent evidence regarding brain plasticity proves that the human mind retains its ability to learn throughout the lifespan and declines in cognition are largely avoidable. There are many lifestyle behaviors such as physical activity levels, dietary choices, alcohol consumption, tobacco usage and level of mental stimulation that have been shown to be important fac46 Southport Magazine /April /April 2021 / www.SouthportMag.com
