IN THIS ISSUE

Thisis our second super-large summer issue and we can’t thank our advertisers enough for helping us be able to expand our page count, which means we can include even more interesting and engaging content for our readers. In this issue, we speak to Ashley at Southern, A Gathering Place. If you haven’t eaten there yet and discovered her blend of upscale Southern and family dining, then you’ll want to check this one out. We preview one of our community’s most fun, and relatively new, events, the Dutchman Dinghy Dash cardboard boat regatta. Yes, all the boats are made of cardboard and they work. Mostly. Maybe. We also check in on a collaboration between the Southport Cheese Shoppe and Uncorked by the Sea where they dive into the world of meats and cheeses at a charcuterie board class. We’re even bringing back the Spottings page to feature events that happened in the past month. See this month’s edition for a look at the very first Oak Island Tide Sit-In. As always thank you for reading, and please be sure to support those who advertise and make all this possible.

Dutchman Dinghies

Second Annual Cardboard Boat Race

It’salmost time for one of our community’s newest summer traditions: The 2nd Annual Dutchman Dinghy Dash (D3), coming up Saturday, Aug. 12 at 11 am at Dutchman Creek Park on Fish Factory Road. This cardboard boat race encourages folks of all ages to get their minds out of the trolling position and into high gear. The mission of this fun and interactive community event is to get participants to design and build a “Dutchman Creek worthy” vessel that will successfully carry two passengers around a set course in the water, without sinking. The catch — boats can only be made from cardboard, duct tape, and glue.

The inaugural Dash was originally to take place in Davis Creek on Oak Island; but unfortunately, it raised some concerns with the Coast Guard. Next, sights were set on Bill Smith Park, only to remember it has an oyster bottom...a really painful-looking oyster bottom. Finally, Dutchman Creek Park was locked in as the home for the first ever Dutchman Dinghy Dash, where it garnered an impressive 12 boats last year.

The man behind this event is Oak Island Community Resource Officer Victor Denoble. Ever a Disney fan, he wanted to give the dash a nod to Disney’s D3 Conference. After many nights at the kitchen table with his wife, the name was born: the Dutchman

Dinghy Dash (D3).

Prior to joining the Oak Island Police Department, Denoble lived and worked in Smithfield, NC, where the idea for the race originated. “It was a really fun thing we did there that I wanted to bring with me,” he said. It seems the community agrees — at time of publication, there were already 18 boats signed up for this year’s race. This is extra impressive, because last year, there wasn’t a single registrant until four days before the event.

If reading this has you chomping at the bit to get in on the fun, build your own boat, and give back to the community at the same time, you can pre-register online at

http://bit.ly/DinghyDash. Alternatively, you can just show up with your boat on dash day and sign up there. The entry fee is a suggested $10 donation of canned goods and/or nonperishables.

Last year’s event was such a success, Denoble is hoping for an even larger turnout this year so he’s able to help even more locals in need. Last year, with many thanks to Lowe’s Foods and Walmart Southport for their donations, the Dutchman Dinghy Dash (D3) donated nearly 300 pounds of food to the Ocean View United Methodist Church Food Pantry. Additionally, Denoble worked closely with Brunswick Family Services to donate 10 full Thanksgiving meals to the Woman’s Missionary Union of the First Baptist Church of Oak Island. The partnership for the meals was largely made possible by Publix Supermarket at Oak Island Marketplace.

Multiple prizes will be given in the different categories, so, in addition to bragging rights, you could have a chance to go shopping thanks to the local merchants who donate the top prizes. Categories include Youth (12 and under), Adult (13 and older), Best in Show, the First Responder Boat Prize, along with Judge’s Choice categories, including Most Creative and the “Titanic” Award for most dramatic sinking. While several nearby towns took part in the First Responder category last year,

Southport Fire Department took home the grand prize.

Another one of last year’s winners was John Denson. While his boat entry, “Titanic” didn’t win its namesake award, it did win for Best in Show. In fact, Denson has built eight boats over the last 12 years, and he’s building two this year, “One for my daughter and myself to race in and one for the grandkids who will also be racing,” he said. While Denson has traveled to several locations for boat races, including White Lake, Holden Beach and Lake Waccamaw, he said it’s all about enjoying the time with his family. “We just go out and have fun,” he said. “We don’t build for speed; we build for show. If we win, great, if we don’t, oh well. We just come to build memories.” That said, if you’re looking for John and his daughter at the dash, they’ll be in the one-of-a-kind Dusty Crophopper design, an idea given to him by his grandson. Meanwhile, the grandkids will be the ones in the Batmobile.

Participants should plan to arrive one hour prior to start time for registration checks and a safety briefing. All pre-registrations will be entered into a drawing for early prize giveaways.

Eating Southern Fresh, Local Ingredients and A Family Vibe

Oneof the defining characteristics of The South is its food. To name a restaurant “Southern” is to promise to deliver not just Southern food, but a true immersion into Southern culture. It’s a tall order. But Ashely and Jim Davis and their family have met the challenge at Southern, a Gathering Place located under the water tower at 15 East Brown St. in Southport. We spoke to Ashley to find out more about how they created a uniquely Southern dining experience.

Tell us about Southern, A Gathering Place. What sort of restaurant is this?

It’s a farm-to-table approach to creative Southern cuisine. Fine dining you can wear your jeans and flip-flops to; or a suit and tie, if you like.

Where did the name come from?

When I first started thinking about the restaurant many years ago, I thought the name “Southern” in an old typewriter font sounded perfect—not just because of the food I wanted to serve, but because of the general aesthetic and culture I wanted it to be encased in. I wanted this dining experience to feel more like eating at my home, at my dinner table, rather than at a restau-

rant. When our guests come here, I want them to feel Southern, even if they aren’t.

Can you tell us little about your history as a chef and what inspires your cooking?

I don’t know if I’d call myself a chef, even though that’s technically what I do at this restaurant. I prefer to say I just love to cook. I have loved cooking for as long as I can remember. I used to stand on a purple chair at my mom’s stove and attempt to cook for my little brother when I was very young.

Celebrating Ten Years of Serving Our Community www.SouthportMag.com /August 2023/ Southport Magazine 6
Biz Feature

Both of my parents and my Nana were excellent cooks, and I would say that my first inspiration and influence certainly came from them. In our family, food always fixed all problems; and nothing feels better to me than cooking something for someone and seeing their enjoyment in eating it. Now, I am mostly driven by a desire to create unique dishes that utilize seasonal and local ingredients; and to collaborate with my two sons and my husband on these creations.

Locals saw the opening process for Southern drag on a bit. What were some of the challenges you faced?

It definitely was a long process, which the majority of was held up by architecture, engineering, and permitting. Once we began construction, even though we had some hurdles, everything was pretty smooth from there. We worked with some wonderful people on this project, and had the support of members of the community that helped us to get open.

Can you walk us through the process of creating your first menu? How did you whittle down endless options into what we see today?

The first menu that I had, I started 17 years ago on my computer in a Word doc. When we decided to open the restaurant, I start-

ed adding things to that menu. It definitely changed a lot between the time we decided to begin this restaurant project and actually printing the first real menu. My family ate lots and lots of fried chicken, biscuits, mac and cheese, pimento cheese, pork chops, and compound butters. Wanting to serve a dish in the restaurant and being able to execute it properly during service are two different things. It’s definitely been a learning experience. Our main menu is very small because we focus on local and seasonal ingredients, so we have a specials menu that we create and change on a daily basis. This is one of my favorite parts of this job, to be able to stay creative in the kitchen; and I also think it excites our guests to know that they don’t ever have to get the same thing twice if they don’t want to.

Your doors have been open for a while now. What has been the best part of owning your own restaurant?

I’m real bossy, so I like being my own boss. LOL… Really, I’m a hard worker; and it’s very rewarding to know that my hard work is for me and my family. It’s also great having a really amazing team that I get to work with

every day, and being able to work with my boys and my husband is the best part. We have lots of laughs in our kitchen, and it keeps me happy to be at work.

What has been the biggest challenge?

The biggest challenge has been figuring out how much to prep, and of what;

and being able to turn my brain off so I can sleep at the end of the day.

Any advice for up and coming chefs and restauranteurs?

Do what you love, cook with as many people as you can and learn from them, and find someone to work with that will

help you foster your strengths and encourage you to pursue your aspirations. My opinion is that you can go to school to learn how to cook, but the very best education is working in the kitchen with other people. What does the future hold for Southern?

We hope to welcome as many guests as

possible, and to continue to make food that everybody loves.

Please feel free to share anything else you’d like us to know!

Through the process of opening this restaurant, one of the best parts has been all of the friendships we have formed with our amazing farmers who work so hard to provide our restaurant with top quality produce, eggs, seafood, pork, chicken, beef, bread, rice, grits, honey, ice cream, and so on. I feel so passionate about these people, I celebrate them by displaying our sources on blackboards in the dining room for everyone to see; because it’s very important to me for people to know where their food came from. I am so grateful for each and every person who provides us with all of our amazing ingredients.

Uncorked by the Sea and Southport Cheese Shoppe Team Up For Culinary Classes

It seems that charcuterie boards are all the rage these days. Gone are the days when you could impress your guests with a plate of Ritz crackers and Cracker Barrel cheese (although I still love that!). Websites abound with tutorials on how to create “stunning charcuterie boards for every occasion,” showing pictures of elaborately arranged trays of gourmet meats, cheeses, and accoutrements that I never even knew existed. But it’s never quite as easy as it looks to make your own charcuterie board. Believe me, I’ve tried, and mine always look like a Kindergarten art project.

Fortunately, the Southport Cheese Shoppe on Howe Street has come to the rescue with a timely “Build a Board” charcuterie classes that offer expert instruction from the pros. Held at the popular wine shop across the street, Uncorked by the Sea, it’s a perfect pairing! I attended a recent class and can tell you, it wasn’t just educational, it was also a lot of fun!

The Southport Cheese Shoppe is owned and operated by Lisa Stettner and her husband Eric, along with help from a team of knowledgeable staff. The charming shop with an Old World feel opened for business about eight years ago and quickly became an integral part of the downtown Southport shopping district. A loyal customer base, consisting of locals and visitors who return every summer, pop in frequently to see what new cheeses are in stock. Lisa says she had no prior knowledge about the cheese business before she opened her store. A neighbor who happened to be a cheese distributor suggested the idea to her while Lisa was exploring other business opportunities. It was a perfect fit for the woman who loved cheese so much that she already owned a mug pro-

claiming her to be “The Big Cheese!” A crash course in all things cheese quickly ensued, with her neighbor providing invaluable assistance, connecting Lisa to a cheese monger and a local chef who provided insight and assistance for her initial setup. These days Lisa is the expert, although she is modest about her expertise.

“I am always still learning. There are thousands of cheeses out there. We always like to bring unique cheeses into the shop to give our customers new experiences,” Lisa said.

Lisa’s favorite cheese? Turns out she has two! The first, which can be very hard to get but is currently available in the shop, is Beecher’s Flagship Reserve, a cloth bound cheddar rubbed with butter. She also loves Lindale Gouda, a cow’s milk gouda made by Goat Lady Dairy in Climax, NC. The shop carries between 25 and 30 imported and domestic cheeses, along with an assortment of cured meats, freshly baked breads, bagels shipped in from New York, and gourmet sandwiches made fresh daily. Lisa’s husband Eric is the architect of some pretty amazing sandwich creations!

The Stettners enjoy getting to know their customers and providing individual attention

to their needs, even making custom-ordered charcuterie trays. Customers appreciate the personal feel of the small specialty shop and return frequently for the excellent assortment of cheeses, many that can’t be found in grocery stores.

The idea for a charcuterie board class came from the popularity of the concept and the growing trend in fun, interactive classes.

“Post COVID, people were looking for things to do. Everyone was craving social interaction, so the class seemed

like a good idea,” Lisa explained.

The initial class was held at the cheese shop, but Lisa quickly realized the space was too small for the number of people signing up. She turned to her friends Meridith and Jeff Muehleib, owners of Uncorked by the Sea, and suggested an arrangement that worked well for both businesses. Uncorked pours red and white wines during the class, chosen to compliment the cheeses and, perhaps, to compliment the participants’ creativity, while The Cheese Shoppe provides charcuterie to snack on throughout the evening. Each class uses a unique board — the most recent class featured a turtle shaped board with a

wooden inlay — and includes several hunks of specialty cheeses, meats, olives, nuts, spreads, and fruit. Participants leave with a heaping board worthy of any gathering.

Cheese Shoppe employee Sherri French leads the classes with humor and enthusiasm:

“This is your board, so design it for your own tastes.” Sherri instructs. “If you don’t like olives, don’t use them!”

Sherri deftly demonstrates how to make rosettes out of salami or prosciutto, how to cut cheese into interesting shapes, how to create lettuce “bowls” in the center to keep wet foods like olives and fruit from getting the cheeses soggy, and the art of stacking foods to get some height. She, Lisa, and Meridith offer advice about a wide array of cheeses and what wines pair well.

Attendance at the Build a Board classes has been strong since inception. The class I attended had 16 participants and the mood was lively.

Uncorked’s long rectangular tables and smaller round tables provide ample workspace while promoting social interaction. Friends Kathy Ferdinand and Kathy Blitz, there for a girls’ night out, shared a table with Southport residents Jacki Paster and Joanne Kimball.

“We don’t know them,” said Kathy, “but we’ll be friends by the end of the night!” she laughed as the women clinked glasses.

Local residents Brandi and Darius Bratsafolis signed up for the class as a fun way to celebrate their ninth wedding anniversary, joined by Darius’ parents Jennifer and Bob Bratsafolis and friends Steve Emmons and Deanna Harvell.

“We love Uncorked by the Sea and have done several of the events here,” said Brandi.

“This is our first time doing the charcuterie board class, but all the events are fun!”

Uncorked has formed partnerships with several Southport businesses to host other events throughout the year, such as the popular “Paint and Sip” classes with local artist Carra Merritt and themed food and wine pairings with local chefs from Live Oak Catering and Street Side Eats. The store also hosts ticketed wine events to support local charities and organizes wine-focused travel groups. Uncorked also has the most chill house pet, a Labradoodle named Cru, who mingles calmly with customers and no doubt has a nose for fine wine and good cheese!

Jeff Muehleib and employee Holly Phillips, Uncorked’s event coordinator, are not only genuine wine enthusiasts, but also certified wine specialists, having both attained a Level II certification from the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET), a global organization

that provides wine education and certification. Jeff and Holly are always happy to discuss wine varietals and vintages, and will make recommendations to suit your menu or palate. The store carries a wide assortment of wines from all over the world, as well as craft beers, local artwork for sale, and gift items. Its modern, hip vibe appeals to a large customer base, with about 180 club members.

“We have such great customers who have so much fun here!” exclaimed Meridith. “Actually, our customers become our friends, and that’s what it is all about!”

So, if you’re looking for some expert advice on arranging your next charcuterie tray, or seeking

something fun and different to do with your friends, or if you just love cheese and wine, sign up for a “Build-a-Board” class with the Southport Cheese Shoppe at Uncorked by the Sea! It’s a delicious night out!

Education On The Go Brunswick Community College Job Training

Editor’s Note: We saw Brunswick Community College’s mobile unit in the 4th of July parade in Southport and wanted to learn more. Being journalists, we waited until close to deadline and submitted a few questions to BCC staff. We hoped we’d get enough to write a nice little article, but what we got was so much more. We thought it would stand on its own as a great Q&A. It was also a great lesson learned about the college itself, and how prepared the college is to meet the needs of our growing county.

Recruiting

students for courses, programs, and workforce credentials is a full-time commitment at Brunswick Community College. Connecting with students beyond the College’s traditional walls requires creativity and a commitment to year-round community engagement. As Brunswick County continues to grow, long-time residents and new arrivals deserve the very best community college experience.

With that in mind, BCC has employed the use of the Mobile Certification & Enrollment Vehicle to connect with potential students from all walks of life.  This mobile resource is equipped with workforce credential kits like 3M, Snap-On, and Lincoln Electric.  Virtual welders, safety supplies, precision measurement, and drop prevention equipment are also readily available for employers that need training.  In addition, the vehicle’s Wi-Fi access enables students to enroll in workforce courses

anywhere. BCC’s Vice President of Continuing Education, Economic & Workforce Development, Greg Bland, provided some additional insight into BCC’s most recent efforts.

What would you say to someone who is on the fence about enrolling at BCC?

No matter your age, background, or goals -  enrolling at BCC will save you a significant amount of money.  If you just finished high school, think carefully about your options.  I

never discourage university enrollment but I caution people to plan carefully.  Families need to know that our elected officials have provided the Brunswick Guarantee.  This last dollar scholarship is a national model. By choosing BCC and the Brunswick Guarantee, you can save your family $15,000-$30,000.  Don’t assume that the university system is your only choice.  BCC can help you arrive at your educational goal and your career without the burden of

In addition, the Foundation of Brunswick Community College has a scholarship process that is student- friendly and easy to navigate.  If you are considering a workforce course leading to a credential, please understand that $180 can dramatically increase your lifetime earnings.  There are local donors that have established workforce scholarships to help regular folks that need training.  Courses like massage therapy, esthetics, natural hair care, nail technician, pharmacy tech, electrical line worker, plumbing, and dental assisting can cost thousands of dollars at other institutions.

How can enrolling in a program at BCC help someone who is thinking about a new career?

Adults considering a new career receive something very special at BCC.  The enrollment experience is combination of personalized care, local workforce knowledge, and straightforward advice.  Our team has worked in Brunswick County for a long time, and we know what workforce trends are emerging.  You will receive a straightforward answer about the occupational outlook that you are considering.  We consider an inquiry to be an opportunity to build a relationship.  When people are ready to make a career change, they need genuine human interaction, not automation.  I work with people who care and we are proud of every workforce program; however, your enrollment must make sense to you.  This process starts with your interests.  The process must also include workforce data and informed decision making.

We consider it a privilege to help non-traditional students who are ready to embark on a new career. We strive to ensure that every potential student makes an informed decision.  For example, the outlook for HVAC Technicians in our region is promising.  This career can eventually lead to small business ownership, supervisory positions, or code enforcement.  The opportunities in information technology, healthcare, public safety, and dental assisting are also extremely promising.  At the same time, most of the individuals that I deal with want to know if their career path-

way leads to opportunity or a dead end.  At BCC, you will receive all of the facts, the entire picture.

We also have a growing number of adult students who are seeking advanced training in the arts (pottery, wood turning, metal sculptures, jewelry design).  They are seeking ways to supplement their income through entrepreneurship and private sales.  We have hundreds of students that have discovered BCC’s Southport Center to be a catalyst for training, income, and community.

What kind of programs does BCC offer?

Brunswick Community College offers a variety of seated and online classes to fit any busy life schedule. Our for-credit offerings prepare you to transfer to a 4-year university, obtain knowledge, and job skills

to enter the workforce or excel in your current career.  For those considering university transfer, our team encourages potential students to consider our existing articulation agreements that guarantee a university seat.  Our partners include the following:  Barton College, Campbell University, East Carolina University (ECU), Fayetteville State University (FSU), Lees McRae College, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, NC State University, NC Wesleyan, Regis University, University of Mount Olive, University of North Carolina at Greensboro, University of North Carolina at Pembroke, University of North Carolina at Wilmington, and Western Governors University.   Looking beyond university transfer, BCC also offers pathways in the following areas:  business, accounting, computer science, education, nursing, emergency medical services, cosmetology, pre-engineering, law enforce-

ment, horticulture, turf grass management, exercise science, and more.  I would like potential students to remember that BCC has embedded a variety of industry-recognized credentials in the pathways above.  There is an advantage to enrolling at BCC because you can leave with a degree or license along with a credential that employers consider valuable.  Each day, students are earning credentials and securing jobs  (Snap-On, Greenlee, Festo, Certiport, Lincoln Electric, 3M, OSHA, NIMS, Starrett)

Who is responsible for operating the enrollment vehicle?

Brunswick Community College considers recruitment to be everyone’s responsibility.  This work is considered a privilege.  It is not unusual to see our President, Dr. Gene Smith, driving the mobile enrollment & certification vehicle to high schools to share program information. There are many other amazing staff members that share this important work; however, Rod Lattie spends the most time behind the wheel.  Rod routinely recruits at area non-profits, retail locations, the Brunswick County Courthouse, and at community/faith-based events.  Rod

has never met a stranger and he is ready to share the outstanding programs that are offered at BCC.  Rod is optimistic, kindhearted, and he believes in second chances! I often hear Rod tell people that “In less than a year, BCC can help you find a new career.”  That is the workforce development motto that we live by every day.

With construction still growing in Brunswick County, how many trades courses are being offered now?

Population growth and new housing developments are routine topics of conversation among most of our residents.  It is obvious that families want to move here and I cannot blame them.  Brunswick County is the only place that I want to live and raise a family.  It’s obvious that BCC is responsible for preparing the workforce for today and tomorrow.  Workforce development is an essential part of our mission and our vision.   “At Brunswick Community College, our vision is to exceed the expectations of our stakeholders for delivering quality education, exceptional workforce training and broad community enrichment.”

Homes, restaurants, retail centers,

schools, highways, plumbing, code enforcement, electrical infrastructure and public safety are all part of the workforce equation.

I am continuing to see a renewed interest in trades and skilled craftsmanship because the wages are getting better.  Our trades and workforce enrollment has grown.  As of today, BCC is currently offering 21 trades related courses that include blueprint reading, construction/carpentry, plumbing, electrical technician, electrical license renewal, lead safety removal, auto technician, boat engine repair, electrical line worker, ma-

chine technology (CNC), forklift operation, and HRD.  As we grow this important area, it is important for employers to understand that we intend to teach the work skills that they need and expect on the job. Partnerships with local employers is the key to our success at BCC.

Sunset On Summer

Oak Island Music Festival Coming Soon

AfterLabor Day weekend, it seems we all breathe a bit easier. We’ve survived another summer proper and can look forward to fall, or what we like to call “local’s summer.” The Town of Oak Island started its Live & Local fall concert series a few years ago, and now the Town is debuting a new event to bridge the gap between the summer and fall festivities.

The inaugural Sunset on Summer Music Festival is an all day event featuring music and children’s activities. Food trucks will be on site and tasty adult beverages from various breweries and distilleries will be available for purchase. Sunset on Summer is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 9, at the Middleton Park fields, SE 46th Street and Dolphin Drive.

“It’s just something to bring the community together as we close the summer season,” Oak Island town manager David

Kelly said. “It also leads into our Live & Local series we have in the fall.”

Sunset on Summer kicks off with children’s activities from 11 am to 2 pm. The event will feature three bands — The Band of Oz from noon to 2 pm, Landslide (a Fleetwood Mac tribute band) from 3-5 pm, and 20 Ride (a Zac Brown tribute band) from 6-8 pm. A DJ will keep the music flowing in between the bands, and the splashpad will be open in between the bands as well. Sunset on Summer will

conclude with a fireworks display shortly after 8 pm.

“We wanted to start something for our community to show our appreciation and to bring our locals and guests together and bring another great summer to an end,” Kelly said.

“It will be great to see families and friends coming out and spending some time enjoying the music, food, and refreshments.” Kelly also complimented town staff for all the hard work they do to provide community engagement events which “showcase the great place where we live, work, and play.”

The Town’s Live & Local Series, featuring live music and arts and crafts vendors, will kick off later in September, so check next month’s issue for that schedule.

A Song For Southport

Waterway Music Releases 4th of July Song

The fireworks have fizzled. The parade has long marched on, and no one is reading the Declaration of Independence aloud on Howe Street. But though the 4th of July Festival might officially be over, one local musical family hopes to add another verse to the annual celebrations.

Husband and wife Casey and Casey Lauren Townsend, owners of Waterway Music and Education, composed and recorded “Southport in the USA,” and they hope it will catch on and become an official part of the festival.

Luckily, we don’t have to wait until next July to start singing along. The song was recently released on Spotify, Apple Music and all the usual places people get their music these days.

During the summer, the Townsends run summer music camps, and last year, they added a new experience to the repertoire.

“We let them try a different instrument every day but then we decided we would write a song for the festival so we could

have them play and perform down on the waterfront,” Casey said. The last day of the festival included many children’s events, and having their students perform a song written just for the festival seemed like a perfect way to finish up camp as well.

Casey said they played around with a sound, and then just started trying different phrases that captured all the best things about celebrating the 4th of July in Southport. Everyone loves the parade and fireworks, of course, so that had to be in the mix.

They decided to lean into country for the song, and Casey Lauren said violin teacher Kirsten Crook also helped put the song together.

“That week of camp we were focused on ukuleles, guitars and banjos, so we needed some music that was easy for them to play.” Casey explained. Casey Lauren said it was great to have so many children from long-time Southport families involved.

“It’s very simple and sweet coming from the perspective of the kids,” she said. “There were a lot of kids who come from multigenerational Southport families who were in that camp,” she said. Twelve children, ages 7 to 11, were involved in the lyric brainstorming and song-writing process, even helping a bit with writing the music; they also performed it during the festival as planned.

The Townsends, along with daughters 11-year-old Chariot and 8-year-old Cadence, recorded the song, at their store (4956-4 Long Beach Rd SE) and at home. Casey has been teaching lessons for about 20 years, and the couple opened the store two years ago.

“We decided to open up a shop so I can do what I love and what I am good at,” he said. “We wanted it to be a family environment.” The family is also involved in a local homeschool coop, which Casey Lauren runs, and the Townsends say they want the business to serve musicians in the area as well as anyone who wants to learn music.

“We feel like we have a lot of local support, and we really appreciate that,” Casey Lauren

said.

Lessons are offered through Waterway, but there is currently a waitlist for new students, through group classes are always available. They also offer crash courses in the summer, which involve classes every night for a week. Check http://waterwaymusicnc.com/ for information on class schedules. They also do repair work on guitars and hope to implement a band instrument rental program for students this fall.

As for “Southport in the USA,” the Townsends got it out by the 4th and have been getting some good feedback. They plan to push it out again leading up to next year’s festival. Though they have different ideas for the song’s success, they both say they hope it catches on.

“It’s not a time-sensitive song so it will be good for every July 4th celebration for as long as Southport does them,” Casey said. “My goal is for it to be the song that everyone kind of rallies around. When you come to Southport from Ohio or California for the festival, you’re singing that song on your way in because you just know it. While we hope they continue to sing ‘The Star Spangled Banner,’ and “You’re a Grand Ole

Flag,” I hope in third place is ‘Southport in the USA,’” he said.

Casey Lauren said her goal might be even simpler. “I feel like if Southport is the number one 4th of July celebration in the country, it deserves a song. It’s a way to bless the town with a song, a way to give back to the community.”

Nature Photos Sold To Support Bird Rescue

STORY AND PHOTOS BY

If you’d like to bring a little bit of our the beautiful nature that surrounds us inside your house, but don’t want to clean up after it, we may have just the thing for you! Emma Thomas at The Adventure Kayak Company is selling a collection of nature photos, mostly birds, with all proceeds to benefit the Sea Biscuit Wildlife Shelter. The photos were all captured from inside a kayak on various Adventure Kayak Company tour

“Jim Clagett, one of my tour guides, started taking these photographs while we were doing kayak tours,” Thomas said. “They’re from all over Brunswick County, from Winnabow up on Price’s Creek to to the Lockwood Folly in Supply to Oak Island and all the salt marsh creek areas. He took these amazing, beautiful photographs, mainly of birds but a lot of nature photographs too, and I thought

this would be a great way to do some fundraising to help Sea Biscuit.”

The Adventure Kayak Company has a long relationship with the Sea Biscuit shelter, our area’s primary wildlife rescue and rehabilitation organization. “We would be out on kayak trips and maybe come across a bird that was stranded or needed some help and we’d reach out

to Mary Ellen (Poole, the founder of Sea Biscuit) and quite often some of her volunteers would meet us and try to capture the bird and take it back to Sea Biscuit,” Thomas said. “And then sometimes Mary Ellen will call me and say ‘Can you paddle out and go get this bird.’”

Thomas said that knowing what Mary Ellen and Sea Biscuit do in terms of helping our wildlife and educating residents and visitors about the animals that share our environment made donating these photos to the cause a no brainer.

The photos are all 8x10, some framed and some just matted. Framed photos are $65 and matted photos are $35. To see the photos or purchase one for yourself, stop by the Adventure Kayak Company, 807-A Howe Street in Southport, on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, or call Emma at 910-454-0607. The photos will been sale through October or until they’re all gone.

Creativity Cove

A Fun Space For Young Artists Opens

STORY CONTRIBUTED

Students of all ages have a new outdoor space to explore and grow their love of the arts at the Brunswick Community College (BCC) Southport Center. The Donna Mandell Creativity Cove was created thanks to the generosity of the late Donna Mandell, Southport resident and artist.

Children from the Brunswick County Parks and Recreation program were the first to use the new space. They painted hand-thrown, bisque-fired bowls for donation to Empty Bowls, a grassroots movement by artists worldwide to fight hunger. Joining the children were Mandell’s family members, arts community representatives, and BCC administration, faculty, and staff.

“Donna was a dynamic force in the Southport and larger Brunswick County arts community,” said BCC Southport Center Director Barbara McFall. “She first visited us in 2015 after relocating from New York. Donna was passionate about working with clay, helped pioneer the pottery program here and later displayed many of her pieces in local galleries. She worked tirelessly to promote the arts, especially among children, and we are thrilled to

honor her memory with the new Creativity Cove.”

After Mandell’s passing last year, her daughter Michele Mandell Cherry donated funds on her behalf and worked with Southport Center and The Foundation of BCC to develop the new space.

Southport Center is a treasure trove of creativity, talent, and opportunity for anyone of any age interested in the arts. Instructors and students spend countless hours working with clay, glass, wood, metal, and more, channeling their energy into priceless works of art. Southport Center offers day and evening classes all year round. For information on fall classes, visit our website at brunswickcc.edu.

Local Theatre Events

A Show, A Workshop, And Auditions

Brunswick

Little Theatre is rolling into August with three theatrical opportunities—their latest show, “Maybe Baby, It’s You”; auditions for their full show, “Drop Dead!”; and enrollment for their youth Musical Theatre Apprentice program.

“Maybe Baby, It’s You,” a comedy by Charlie Shanian and Shari Simpson, directed for Brunswick Little Theatre (BLT) by Rick Roberts, is about the search for that most elusive of entities, the soul mate, told in a series of 11 vignettes that cover ground from the first kiss to the not-so-golden years of marriage.

BLT describes it as a raucous ride with two searchers with a laundry list of musthave qualities for a mate that swiftly dwindles down to “warm and breathing” as the only prerequisite; a mild-mannered Midwesterner whose blind date turns out to be the Greek goddess Medea; a film noir couple who realize that their razor-sharp banter is hiding their fear and vulnerability; a gorgeous, charming brain surgeon who is always “Mr. Wrong” due to his penchant for spastic, arrhythmic club dancing; a couple celebrating their wedding anniversary who realize that marriage may not have ended their search for a soul mate; an elderly divorced couple who entertain the fantasy of a reconciliation at their grandson’s soccer game; and other would-be and shouldn’t-be couples trying to find each other. Maybe baby, it’s

you. Or maybe…it isn’t.

Showtimes are Thursday-Saturday, Aug. 3-5 and 10-12 at 7:30 pm and Sundays Aug. 6 and 13 at 3 pm. Tickets are available to purchase  at www.brunswicklittletheatre.com or in person at Ricky Evans Gallery at 211 N. Howe Street, Southport. BLT advises you to buy your tickets early, as matinees sell out quickly!

If being on stage instead of in the audience appeals to you, you’ll want to audition for the comedy “Drop Dead!” Auditions will be held Sunday, July 30, Monday, July 31, and Wednesday, Aug. 2 from 6:30-8:30 pm in Classroom 1A and the Ryan Tewell Studio behind the main theatre building on 8068 River Road SE, Southport. If you are unable to make any of these dates, please contact the director Dan Barth at dbarthnc@outlook.com or 617-9210260 to discuss a separate time for an audition.

Synopsis: “An odd-ball cast of hasbeen actors revive their careers in “Drop Dead!,” a potboiler murder mystery di-

rected by ‘Wonder Child of the Broadway Stage’ Victor Le Pewe. At the dress rehearsal, the set falls, props break, and the producer and an actor are murdered. But the show must go on!  During the opening night performance, the murders continue. The remaining thespians must save the show and their careers, solve the mystery, and stay alive for curtain call.”

The show has 10 characters. While there is some need for younger and older actors in some parts, the script offers great flexibility to the director in casting.

Parts are available for actors/actresses 18 to any adult age. This is a stage show but this show requires some interactive acting skills as the live audience becomes part of the show in a few spots.

The show will run Sept. 28 to Oct. 1 and Oct. 5 to 8.

Learn About Elections

Join Series of Board of Election Seminars

Lastmonth we celebrated the founding of our representative republic and in November we’ll be going to the polls to put the ideals won in our Revolution into practice as we choose those who will represent us in government. Are you curious about how that happens, the nitty gritty of making a democratic system function?

The Brunswick County Board of Elections is offering a look inside the process with a series of public seminars on the various aspects of running an election.

The next seminar covers voting equipment. The free class will introduce attendees to the equipment used in Brunswick County and touch on the use of paper ballots, what type of testing is done to voting equipment to ensure accuracy, and what security measures are in place.

The seminar will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 16 from 5:30-6:30 pm both in person in the Commissioners Chambers, David Sandifer Administration Building, 30 Government Center Drive, Bolivia, and via a Zoom link. To attend online pre-registration is required at https://bit.ly/3ZltT0o.

The September seminar is entitled “Prepare To Vote” and will cover what steps you can take to ensure a smooth voting experience on Thursday September 21.

The final seminar, Certifying An Election, takes place after the November elections on Thursday, Dec. 12 and wraps up the

series with information on how the voted we just cast are made official.

For any questions on these seminars, please call 910-253-2620.

Housing Benefit Show

Synchronicity Performs At St. Philips Church

STORY CONTRIBUTED

Join the musical group Synchronicity for “Songs for a Summer Evening” on Saturday, Aug. 5 at 7 pm. This classical and traditional concert will be held at St. Philip’s Episcopal Church, 205 E. Moore St., Southport. A reception will follow the concert. All proceeds from the free-will offering will benefit the Brunswick Partnership for Housing, which provides transitional housing for families in need.

Members of Synchronicity are Michele Barkalow, flutist; Diane Lusk, pianist; and Carol Amaya, soprano. “All of us in Synchronicity came to Southport from different places and feel fortunate to have found a home in this beautiful place,” said Michele Barkalow. “We are happy to be able to use our musical talents to help the Brunswick Partnership for Housing assist others less fortunate to find their homes.”

About Synchronicity

Synchronicity has been defined as a destined chain of events that happen at just the right time. In 2018, Carol, Diane and Michele, all new to the Southport area, through a series of seemingly unrelated events, met and discovered that they had a common a desire to share their musical talents with their new community. After performing two successful house concerts in St. James, the trio decided it was time to

choose a name and look for ways to reach a wider audience. They believe this is more than a coincidence – it’s Synchronicity!

ART BEAT

Painting Our Heroes

Local Artist Captures Moments For Coast Guard

Long before photographers and cameras were everywhere, artists had been commissioned to record events using their painting and drawing skills. In America, these paintings are considered irreplaceable historical documents of U.S. History, such as the works by portrait artist Gilbert Stuart who painted portraits of the first six presidents. Americans today know what George Washington looked like when he became our first president in 1789 because of the picture he painted of the Founding Father. Or the rare Army paintings by artists Samuel J. Woolf, who was embedded with American forces in Europe during World War I. To this day, all branches of the United States Military have artwork that depicts historical stories of missions, heroes, and military events. Each picture tells a story. These paintings are hung in offices in government places, the office walls of the members of Congress and Government buildings, and other military and civilian offices around the country.

The Coast Guard Art Program, or COGAP, celebrates its 35th year of using fine art to tell the stories, honor heroes, and inform the public about military duties. According to the US Coast Guard website, most Coast Guard artists are professional artists who volunteer their time and talents. The collection holds nearly 2,000 works of mostly paintings that capture the daily missions of the 40,400 active duty men and women and the missions they perform daily, including homeland security, military readiness, search and rescue, marine environmental protection, drug interdiction, and natural resource management, as well as sea and air assets.

One of these fine artists now resides here

in our Southport community. Susanne Corbelletta, a New York native, has volunteered her time and talent to paint for the Coast Guard for several years. “I applied to the Coast Guard Art Program, had my work juried, and was excited to be accepted into their program,” said Susanne. “I’ve created nine paintings so far and will continue to donate more. My current painting is on display at the Salmagundi Club in NYC through July 28, 2023, then to Federal Hall Museum, NYC.”

Susanne’s award-winning paintings are privately collected and exhibited nationally. Her work has been shown at The National Gallery, the Salmagundi Art Club, Federal Hall National Museum in NYC. Being a na-

tive New Yorker, Susanne Corbelletta and her husband moved to the Southport area to be in a quieter environment. “Cousins of mine retired to North Carolina and asked us to have a look. Southport had what we were looking for… a thriving art community and a local airport. My husband is a pilot.”

Susanne was classically trained at The Stevenson Academy of Traditional Painting. The founder, Harold Stevenson, was a protégé and friend of Norman Rockwell. “I learned to draw for a full year before I picked up a paintbrush,” she said. Susanne explains that her process is a combination

of many lessons. “Preparing a canvas, choosing, aligning, and drawing a subject, choice of paints, etc., are all part of the process. Finally, getting to paint is the easy and fun part of the process for me. When I start a painting, I sometimes hear my instructor’s voice guiding me through the process.”

Inspired by Impressionism and Classical Realism, Susanne paints to capture mood and atmosphere by using changes in light and broken color, hoping to invoke a sense of tranquility for the viewer. Her goal is to draw inspiration from her surroundings, and she is always captivated by light and shadows moving over a landscape. When not painting for the Coast Guard, Susanne also enjoys painting portraits, figures, and still life, in which she can control the lighting and composition.

Every year, Susanne is honored by the U.S. Coast Guard for her efforts in painting the stories of its servicemen and women. She is very proud to be an artist for the United States Coast Guard, where she has joined the ranks of artists past to assist in documenting their history through paintings.

You can see more of her Coast Guard and other paintings on her website https:// www.susannecorbelletta.com/.

She also shows locally in Southport at the Franklin Square Gallery and Artisans

These thought-provoking programs are the main reason this non-profit organization, now in its 13th year, continues to hold the coveted reputation of being the largest Civil War round table in the country, adding 193 new members just this past season. Programs scheduled for the upcoming season are sure to continue this momentum.

Tuesday, Sept. 5: “Marble Nash Taylor and Edward Stanley: North Carolina’s Two Civil War Union Generals.” Interesting events unfolded in 1861 when two pro-Northern “governors” emerged proclaiming themselves to be the true loyal governor of the state; one self-proclaimed, the other named a “real” Union governor by President Lincoln. Guest speaker: Max Longley, an associate with the Emerging Civil War Speakers Program, and a prolific writer of numerous articles and books on various Civil War topics.

Tuesday, Oct. 3: “The Naval Civil War in Theaters Near and Far.” Naval operations, or “theaters,” are rarely highlighted when discussing Civil War military history. This presentation, however, will discuss distinctive strategic, tactical, technological, and command characteristics of naval theaters and their contributions to land campaigns. Guest speaker: Dwight Hughes is a U.S. Naval Academy graduate, a Civil War historian, author, and speaker on naval history, combining his love of the sea with his fascination of Civil War history.

Monday, Oct. 30: Civil War Ladies’ Forum (Sponsored by BCWRT): “Sex in the Civil War.” A tastefully implemented PowerPoint presentation for the ladies which was first presented five years ago is returning by popular demand! Guest speaker: Chris E. Fonvielle, Jr. is Professor Emeritus, Dept. of History at UNCW, a native of Wilmington, award-winning Civil War historian, author,

tour guide, and always ready to entertain his audiences on a variety of Civil War topics.

Tuesday, Nov. 7: “Gettysburg’s Southern Front: Opportunity and Failure at Richmond.” We will get an in-depth look into this little-known Federal advance against Richmond during the Gettysburg Campaign. This includes military operations, as well as issues of diplomacy, U.S. war policy, and involvement of enslaved people. Guest speaker: Hampton Newsome is an attorney, and a highly acclaimed, award-winning author of books on Civil War history, including this presentation based on his book of the same title.

Tuesday, Dec. 5: “Civil War Photography Extravaganza.” Prepare for a unique and dramatic photographic tour of the Civil War in a manner available nowhere else. Our presenter will also explain the birth of photojournalism, technological innovations, and while difficult to look at, the first photos of American dead soldiers. Guest speaker: Garry Adelman is a nationally renowned expert of Civil War photography. Plus, he is a prolific award-winning author, licensed battlefield guide, frequent guest lecturer, and is currently the chief historian of the American Battlefield Trust.

Jan. 2, 2024: “Civil War, Uninterrupted: Jefferson Davis, George Washington Rains, and Confederate Gunpowder Strategy.” George Rains was instrumental in providing Jefferson Davis’s army with gunpowder.

This enabled the South to achieve early success at the Battle of Bull Run in 1861, building momentum and confidence in the South’s war effort. It was referred to as the “Confederate gunpowder strategy,” a critical component of their war effort. Guest speaker: Ted Savas is an award-winning author, college professor, attorney, and publisher of a company specializing in military and general history subjects.

Feb. 6: “A Great Race between Two Rivers: Sherman’s March toward Fayetteville.” As part of the Carolinas Campaign, Sherman’s army took control of Fayetteville, destroying the Fayetteville Arsenal, foraged for food and supplies, burned private homes and businesses which demoralized Confederate forces and the civilian population. This was a strategic effort toward ending the war. Guest speaker: Colonel Wade Sokolowsky (Ret.) is a 25-year U.S. Army veteran, author, frequent lecturer, and one of North Carolina’s leading experts of the 1865 Carolinas Campaign.

March 5: “Treated Worse Than Felons Before Prisons Were Reformed: The Civil War’s Crisis of Imprisonment.” Both the Union and Confederates were unprepared for the large number of prisoners taken in during the war. This led to a crisis of overcrowding, poor treatment, and unsanitary conditions, eventually leading to extensive prison reform. Guest speaker: Angela Zombek is Assistant Professor of History at UNCW, and is the author of a book, numerous articles, and book chapters on imprisonment in the Civil War era.

April 2: “Why the Civil War is Still Important.” Consider the fact that we became a single nation. It marked the end of slavery. It brought great innovation and technological advancements; e.g., new weapons, transportation systems,

and medical techniques. The sheer bloodiness of the conflict shocked our senses, strengthened democracy, resulting in optimism and prosperity ever since. Guest speaker: Chris Fonvielle, Wilmington’s favorite local historian and dynamic speaker, returns once again by popular demand to enlighten and entertain us.

May 5: “Contributions of the USCTs During the Civil War.” Fact: nearly 200,000 African-American soldiers fought in the Civil War. While their contributions are too numerous to mention here, it is worth noting their many contributions resulted from their involvement in every major battle throughout the war, earning 20 Medals of Honor. Guest speaker: Edward W. Gantt is a retired U.S. Navy Captain, high school teacher, Civil War re-enactor, and currently president of the re-formed 23rd Regiment USCT in Spotsylvania, Virginia.

Everyone is invited to visit or become a member. Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of every month, except June through August, in the comfort of the newly-renovated Hatch Auditorium on Caswell Beach. Registration begins at 6:15 pm and programs start at 7. The visitor fee is $10 and may be applied toward the $25 annual membership dues. For more information, please contact president John Butler at Brunswickcwrt@gmail.com, or call him at (404) 229-9425.
