Just a Swingin’! FORE!

Annual Mayor’s Cup Golf Tournament takes place at The Lakes Country Club

STORY BY: AMI BROWN

T

he Mayor’s Cup Golf Tournament is in Full Swing! The annual fundraiser golf tournament brings golfers from all over the country, being one of the biggest events in Boiling Springs Lakes! Each year the tournament grows, and this year up to 35 teams are expected.

This event started out over 15 years ago and is still going strong today. It’s a grass roots, family oriented day of fun. Originally designed to assist local families in need and local projects needing extra funding. The Community Center was the beneficiary for several years and the annual tournament played a major role in that construction. Today is no exception; all the funds are kept locally for the enjoyment of the community. The Special Events Committee hosts several events throughout the year. This is one of their largest and most anticipated fundraisers. For more info about events in BSL events, check out the website: www.cityofbsl.org Mayor Joan Kinney created the original tournament and the name stuck. Every year you will find the current mayor participating. This year we will all be looking out for the current Mayor, Craig Caster to join the event as usual. The tournament receives donations and sponsorship from local businesses. The support from the community really makes this a big draw for area residents. Spectators are welcome to cheer on the teams, or at least high five them as they walk by! I know very little about golf, so please forgive the misuse of terminology – but here it goes. Since this is a Captain’s Choice / Scramble, each team member tees off and proceeds to the spot of the best drive

The BSL Mayor’s Cup Golf Tournament is August 20, 2016 at the Lakes Country Club, 591 South Shore Drive, BSL, Southport. For more information, to become a sponsor or to register you can call 910-845-2625 or email info@thelakescountryclub.com. They also have a

and that is where everyone hits their next ball. This continues for each shot until the ball is sunk. So you can have a bad shot or two, and still do pretty well! It’s also a “Shotgun” start. This is perfect for larger tournaments like this because everyone starts at a different hole. This reduces wait times and with this heat, no one needs to be standing around for hours. Eighteen holes usually only takes about four hours, and that’s the time goal with the entire tournament as well. If you are wondering, there will be lots of cash prizes to be won. And since it’s a “Flighted After Play” scoring format, every handicap has a chance of winning something. This is really my kind of tournament! The entry fee is only $55, and that includes a hamburger & hotdog BBQ lunch afterwards and award ceremony following. Grab your gloves, spikes and tees, because tee off is at 9am, and there is still plenty of time to enter. You’ll be glad it’s a public tournament and open to any amateur at any skill level. (No Pros Allowed) So get all your golfing buddies together, select your teams of four and register today! This is the perfect way to enjoy the sport, make a few new friends, connect with the community and have some fun along the way.

Facebook page with registration details. If you are an avid golfer, this tournament is a close second only to the largest tournament of the year, just around the corner. So if you enjoy this one, make sure to register for the upcoming Masonic Lodge Golf Tournament –September 24th.1

Cherished Times and Memories Books to transport you to a different time BY: JENNIFER BARNETT

L

ately I have been curious about the history of Southport, Oak Island, and Bald Head. There are tons of books written about our area. While I couldn’t possibly showcase all of them, here are a few that interested me. I have picked out several categories; history, non- fiction, fiction, young readers, children’s and even some old cookbooks. I love that no matter what type of book you read you can get a feel for what life was like in the past. There are, most likely, more recent books written but I chose the golden oldies. Not only will these books teach you about our area but also they will transport you back to a simpler time. If I missed one that you like, feel free to post it on our Facebook page at facebook.com/SouthportMagazine. We would love to hear your input!

HERMAN THE HERMIT CRAB:

Written by Cindy w. Hollingsworth During a seashell hunt on Oak Island in North Carolina, the author of this charming picture book encountered Herman the hermit crab. Herman was the only one in his seaside traveling pack of hermit crabs that didn’t have a shell. Or did he? His was a tiny one at the end of his tail. He had long since outgrown his former home. The rhyming text and peaceful illustrations will put readers in the middle of the beach scene. The author has emotionally described her transition from feelings of mirth to ones of sadness for poor Herman who didn’t have a home. Her decision to help Herman and what happens after that will delight readers and listeners alike. You will be able to hear the gentle lapping of the waves as you enjoy reading and rereading this book with or to a young reader. I guarantee that you will never look at a seemingly empty shell in the same way that you did before.

Fiction BEFORE WE WERE QUAINT:*

Written by Larry Maisel On the cover it reads- The Southport few r e m e m b e r… and others can’t imagine. This is the line that spurred my curiosity. What was Southport like when it was a hard working, rough, industrial town in the nineteenth century? Even the early 20th century didn’t find Southport as simply a fishing village. Only later could it be called “quaint.” This book punctures the myth about the nature of the small North Carolina coastal village of Southport. The author unfolds the past telling of patriots in the Revolution and Civil War blockade-runners, converted shrimp boats to seek out German U-boats offshore during World War II. Then after the Civil War until well after World War II, with the explosive growth of the commercial seafood industry which was the economic backbone of Southport. This book tells the story of the lives of people who lived with the threat of disease, survived hurricanes and children who grew up swimming, fishing, and getting into mischief along the town’s waterfront.

THE MYSTERY AT OAK ISLAND:

Written by M.C. Tillson For two weeks, Sam, Becky, Mom and Dad are staying on North Carolina’s amazing Oak Island and sharing a house right on the beach with Dad’s best friend and his family. What starts as a typical vacation quickly becomes a series of puzzling events when Sam and Becky and their new friends realize that they all share the same secret about the Oak Island Lighthouse. Young readers can join the kids as they solve puzzles and try to figure out where the clues are leading, but beware! For pirates have roamed the treacherous waters around Cape Fear—some say they still do. It’s all part of the mystery of Oak Island and the magic of summer in North Carolina.

SOUTHPORT - A STORY OF SECOND CHANCES:

Written by Edward P. Norvell Southport is the story of Todd Field, who as a young man leaves his home on a tobacco farm for the love of the North Carolina coast. He leaves behind a family cycle of alcohol, violence, and abuse. Set on Bald Head Island and along the historic Southport waterfront area during the 1970s and 1980s, the story tells of Todd’s journey through loss, betrayal, and pain to redemption and second chances.

All the while the Old Man acts as teacher and guide, passing on his wisdom and life experiences to the boy, who listens and learns.

THE OLD MAN’S BOY GROWS OLDER*:

Written by Robert Ruark Now that the Old Man has passed on and the boy has grown up, this nostalgic sequel tells the boy’s story. But guilt from her actions, thirty years ago, pushes Connie to the verge of a nervous breakdown. You will find love, secrets, murder, spirits and all types of demons to wrestle with in this book. It is set in coastal North Carolina, local history and beauty interweave in this unforgettable story, with characters becoming forces of their own.

OF HOME AND THE RIVER-Southport stories from the Civil war to the present*:

Written by Lewis J. Hardee, Jr. A native son relates stories of the “children of the river” laced with humor, heartaches, tears and a little scandal here and there. These stories are one way or another related to the author’s hometown of Southport, N.C. and Brunswick County where for many years his maternal ancestors resided. “Some are unapologetically nostalgic, based on recollections from growing up. Others are researched. Some you may find amusing; others you will not.” (A companion book to Classic Southport Cooking listed below)

As a bonus, the book also includes each of the recipes in the original cookbook, which was published by the St. Philip‚ Episcopal Church, Southport, NC in 1907.

BIZ Q & A Clothing & Gifts with Vintage Appeal Treasures & Uncommon Finds At Gatehouse in Southport! STORY BY: LESLIE FOSTER

P

erhaps it’s the porch brimming with its unique pieces that beckons to shoppers to come in and browse this charming and eclectic Southport shop. And if the pieces on the porch don’t tempt you, the goods inside certainly will! Meesha, the owner of Gatehouse has been a store owner for 13 years in Southport. Her eye for selecting beautiful women’s clothing trends to vintage style and old world charm. (Think French) and her knack for finding beautiful and unusual pieces for the home compliments the rooms and front porch of her shop on Howe. Whether you are searching for the softest pajamas you will ever wear, or a vintage inspired dress to wear this summer, Gatehouse is a shop not to be missed! One of the most appealing things about Gatehouse is that it is not your typical gift shop catering to tourists. Meesha chooses her inventory carefully and it shows. Shop here for truly unique, pretty things, gifts that are whimsical, functional, vintage and new. This is a shop that calls out for you to stay awhile, touch the merchandise, try on the dress and buy that special gift. Southport is a special town, filled with wonderful small businesses and Gatehouse is certainly one of the best.

Q: How would you describe the vibe of your shop?

My customers have commented that the Gatehouse has a very French, New Orleans feel and vibe to it. I have been in business for almost twenty years. Thirteen of which have been here in Southport…originally on Moore St. many still remember me as Under the Eaves.. I changed the name when I moved uptown in 2008 to Meesha Co. Now at my final location 620 Howe St. Meesha Co. at the Gatehouse. I added Gatehouse to the name because, at one time, there was a gate across Howe Street that was opened and closed in the mornings and evenings. I am located in one of the 3 houses built in the 1920s for 3 sisters and they came to be called the Gatehouses because there proximity to the gate. I believe I can attribute my longevity in the retail business to my pure

will to be independent and make a living for myself and being able to adapt to changing economics and circumstances as a chameleon would.

Q: What do you attribute your success?

The Gatehouse is a very eclectic shop and I suppose that is a reflection of my personality. I imagine I could make more money buying and selling run of the mill chain store type gifts that appeal to the majority, but I would have been be bored years ago I love the thrill of hunting for treasures not found everywhere.

Q: Your shop is very eclectic! Which items are your bestsellers?

Typical a gift item you would find at the Gatehouse would more likely be a brass sparrow paperweight, a wind mobile with black bats made from driftwood or a magnifying glass with a goat horn handle. I would have to say thought that my most popular item is my vintage inspired clothing that is ageless with a romantic feel yet something you would feel comfortable wearing to the waterfront. To enjoy a glass of wine and watch the sunset.

Q: I find that the shops in Southport are a reflection of their owners tastes and interests. How is Gatehouse a reflection of you, Meesha? The front porch of your shop holds an assortment of garden related gifts. What can $50 buy? You have a large reclaimed wood mirror behind your counter. Where do you find such unique and appealing pieces? If I came into your shop in search of a gift for my mother/sister/friend, what would I probably leave with? I would say that the Gatehouse reflects my love of vintage items both in clothing and gifts. Since I have such a beautiful large porch on the Gatehouse, I like to have a spattering of garden related items,

Owner, Meesha

unusual flower pots in the shape of burlap sacks, baskets, water faucet soap dishes and bud vases…all under $50. I also have some more expensive items such as metal alligator yard art and deer planters made from recycled steel drums. I always like to have a few one of kind pieces I pick up on my travels found in old barns and farms of friends in Virginia. So, if you were to shop in my store for a gift for your mother, friend or sister, you would come away with something they would love …something uncommon. Perhaps a necklace made from orange peels and tropical seeds and hand dyed in magnificent hues, a fringed vest or an arrowhead necklace. 1

HOMESTYLE Bare Feet Required Their escape by the sea

H

eidi Brunet and Lisa Lautner purchased their oceanfront home on Peppervine Trail in June 2015 and decided to make Bald Head Island their permanent residence. The home had been a rental for several years and was in need of repair. You know how it is...When you are in a rental, you tend to leave doors open and turn the air way down.

Well, this had happened for quite some time and when the renovation started, in September 2015, everything was removed. The house was torn down to the studs and it was discovered that the house was soaked, so soaked that water could be wrung from the insulation. “When we first saw this house, it looked very different. The house was in much need of some TLC. When we first saw the house and the view, one of the designers we worked with at Room Service said ‘You know, you walk in the door and some of it’s the view. But you feel like the house just hugs you.’ It’s that comforting. I love that. It’s spectacular.. Its part of the reason why we kept things really neutral here so the view is what you look at the most.” - Heidi The couple had done some remodeling in the past so, they knew what they wanted when work began in September 2015. They hired a local contractor, great local subcontractors and Room Service Home Furnishings, located on Bald Head Island, for help with design and logistics of the move and renovation. “Room Service was fantastic! They helped with light fixtures and furniture. They got the house loaded and unloaded...All of the logistics with the move. They were instrumental with the barge, the moving and donating of furniture, the shipping and receiving and our belongings in storage during the reno.... All the way through the project, they helped with countless small but difficult details that arise when living on a small island.” - Heidi The transformation is impressive. Care and attention to detail is apparent in every nook and cranny and nothing was lost when it comes to style. The remodel features a modern, open floor plan and is fit with gorgeously comfortable finishes. This house is a beach lover’s dream The exterior is painted a stylish ‘buckwheat’ with white trim. A charming front

porch welcomes visitors inside where you’ll find hardwood floors, new shiplap walls and Carrara marble throughout. The home includes plenty of windows, illuminating the home with natural light and gifting practically every room with an ocean view. The feeling is light and airy right from the start so your eye goes straight out to the view...It’s not dragged down by furnishings and decor. A simple asymmetrical arrangement, including a gnarled, sun dried piece of driftwood, sits on a rustic green cabinet providing a beautiful storage solution. Two drawers, with random flaking of paint, offer ample space to stash keys, gadgets, pet leashes and other everyday essentials while keeping them easily accessible yet out of sight. A calming abstract painting, in cool blue and green, hangs overhead making for a modern but cozy entry area. Blue invokes an incredible sense of calm, and who among us couldn’t use just a little more of that in our homes? The palette is neutral, but adds visual interest via similar applications of cool colors and unusual shapes and textures. The style here is all about function with comfort and relaxation. Begin with the base for any classic coastal beach cottage... shiplap walls. There’s no competition with the furnishings or the outdoors as white shiplap walls reflect the light brought in by the large windows creating a lovely, relaxing living area. Soft neutrals, maritime blues and dune-grass greens create a calm coastal feel while geometric patterns and textures add personality, interest and depth to the large linen sofa. A set of slip covered chairs face the sofa in an open arrangement by the fireplace, which was also redone in the restoration. The big old chunky tile was replaced with Carrara marble for a timeless look and a niche just the right size for a beautifully stylish Crosley Bermuda turntable was

added. It stands on a tall slender tabletop, becoming a new focal point, and plays nothing but sweet vinyl music. Yes, vinyls are back! “I found a woman in California with an original collection from the 70s. She was moving into a small house so I bought her whole collection!” Heidi smiles.

“It’s everything from Cheech and Chong, The Spinners to Led Zeppelin and The Eagles and of course, Elton John.” - Lisa “And lots of Simon and Garfunkel.” Heidi. The cabinets and walls on either side of the fireplace were reworked to fit the electrical panel and to keep the space from being lopsided. A cabinet was made to house the electronics and make the space work aesthetically. Heidi suggested to Chris Lokey, with North State Woodcraft, that the cabinet door be fit with chair caning to provide ventilation for the electronics. North State Woodcraft, based out of Shallotte, NC, did all the cabinets in the home. Heidi and Lisa sit comfortably across

from me while their dog Sophie plants kisses on my face and sits on my lap. Meanwhile their second and smaller dog, Alphie, rests on Heidi’s shoulder and wakes every few minutes to send a growl my way...reminding me who’s boss. The two spend all their time in the living area enjoying the beautiful, expansive view as Heidi explains, “When the water’s not so choppy and when it’s clear, you can sit and watch dolphins swim in the water out here, its beautiful. It’s like our own little sea world.” “Although it feels decorated at the same time is was more important to us that it feel comfy. That people would want to sit on the couch and feel at home and. To be comfortable doing that. It’s not easy to do.” - Heidi “You’re at the beach and you’re gonna have sand. I take the dogs for a walk, bring

in the sand...And its all good.” - Lisa A set of large glass pendants hang over the sofa table, keeping the space open, and acting as a room divider of sorts. But they are transparent so they don’t block the sight-line to the adjacent space... Making the living and dining area easily accessible from any direction. The dining room is fit with slipcovers and coordinating chairs that are user-friendly and casual yet sophisticated. They offset the heaviness of the large wooden table, which is perfect for entertaining, and the different styles work well together. A large lantern brings great light to the space without feeling oversized and serves as a charming addition to the soft creamy colors running through the space. The woven shades bring a natural, relaxed touch while providing a bit of privacy when needed and the wood floors, rustic shiplap walls and mix

of furnishings add up to a pleasing mix that will continue to look great as years go by. We look outside and notice that nobody is on the beach. What a treat it must be to see this view on a daily basis. “There’s nobody on the beach now at all. It’s been windy...Little kids were trying to fly a kite in 30mph winds and a little girl with a boogie board was holding it by the string and it was flapping in the wind,” Lisa laughs. “There’s bonfires at night... It’s fun to watch everybody enjoy their vacation out there.”

“The kitchen was always the focal point of the house so having a designer that Heidi was comfortable with was key. I don’t know how many reiterations Heidi went through with Jessie (from Room Service).” - Lisa “Eight” - Heidi adds and Lisa chuckles It’s a nice efficient layout... There’s room to create, prepare and mingle while guests

can help themselves to refreshments as the layout allows for traffic to flow freely. There’s generous counter space and storage. The stainless steel surfaces, white cabinets and neutral tile back splash keep the space clean, while accessories add bright accents. The hardware and lighting add shine to the space, while beautiful hardwood floors provide warmth. A glass mosaic tile wall brings a lightness to the room and adds a nice textural element, particularly in contrast to the white cabinets. “We had space limitations. We’d already picked the appliances and the fridge would only fit it one spot. We also wanted an island in the middle for prepping and a beverage bar on the other side. It just took a little while to figure out.” - Heidi “You know how it is when you entertain or have family in? Everybody’s in the kitchen. And if we are trying to cook and prep, you just want to make a space where they can be comfortable...Get to the drinks and snacks. So, Heidi came up with the idea of the ice maker, the beverage fridge, the wine maker and pantry right behind it so most people stay by the counter, its a nice height, and it gives us space.” - Lisa A blue island provides ample space for food preparation and adds a cool color punch while the sparkling glass drawer knobs bring a touch of bling. A large stain-

less steel range stands at the ready to assist in culinary creations and an apron-front kitchen sink features a pattern of horizontal ridges on the front. The depth and size of an apron sink as hugely appealing. It can hide dirty dishes, make it much easier to wash large pots and it almost glamorizes an everyday ritual. Dark wooden doors adorn the fridge and nearby floating shelves creating a space to display decorative items and offer an unusual contrast. Exposed steel beams add a rustic, organic and industrial feel and the recessed adjustable LED lights have a sleek clean look. Not only are the lights energy efficient but they illuminate the entire space while meals are underway. So what kind of meals do Heidi and Lisa like to prepare and share with their guests? Well, that depends on the number of people they have. “Homemade ravioli is great...The counter tops are perfect for that.” - Heidi. “It’s a lot of fun, we did that when my Dad was here. Everybody can participate and make their own ravioli. But for a larger crowd we can’t do that. This week we’ve got a big crowd so we have a pulled pork recipe. It’s got more of a Texas flair. It has a lot of orange, citrus and jalapeno in it so its a little bit different from a traditional Carolina BBQ. So that’s on the menu this week. It’s probably going to be a popular go-to for a larger crowd” - Lisa “Also, the Market is terrific now. They have had a lot of great seafood items out the last 30 days or so...Grouper, tuna, shrimp, lobster. If you have a big crowd and you want lobster, you can call and they’ll bring it in

from Haag & Sons Seafood in Oak Island the next day. Its nice.” - Lisa Just beyond the kitchen a sliding barn door with a metal track opens up to the laundry area and full bath. The wooden door makes a rustic statement against the nearby fresh white walls. It’s distressed grain has a very natural feel as it seamlessly conceals the laundry area without interfering with space like a traditional hinged door would. Green grass cloth wallpaper, woven and ecologically friendly, creates a calming and harmonious space. It’s textural richness sets off the white appliances,

warms the room and offers a wonderful way to bring natural shades and textural interest into an otherwise ordinary space. In the adjacent bath, a bright yellow cabinet has been transformed into a vanity and fit with a deep vessel sink. It’s stylish, functional and adds warmth to the small space while providing storage for towels and bathroom necessities. Its like the modern star of the room, popping against the gorgeous geometric design of the iridescent background and white geometric floor. The wallpaper reflects the metallic hue of the fixtures and hanging pendant mirror as it moves the light around the room. It’s a nice contrast, mixing feminine

and masculine, without appearing too busy or overdone. Opposite the bathroom, the back porch includes an outdoor living space perfect for enjoying a glass of wine or dinner for four while feeling the ocean breeze. It’s the picture of relaxation. The eaves and screen lend shelter while allowing the island breeze to flow. The soothing greens and blues of the outdoors bring a little of the island into the home. A mix of geometric patterns enliven the space and play nice together against the crisp white backdrop of the plush couches. It’s fresh and classic while providing a restful panoramic water view with classic charm. Step outside and a

group of adirondack chairs, sourced by Island Hardware, await on the large outdoor deck, making for an inviting spot to enjoy morning coffee or happy hour cocktails. “The screened porch out there seems to be a favorite spot. It’s a small porch but you get the breeze going and there’s comfortable seating. People just take a nap.” - Lisa, “ “Its great! That’s a compliment...Ya know, my uncle comes home from lunch and goes out and takes a nap. No worrying what to do or where somebody is. It’s nice.” - Heidi We head across the living area to the master suite and Alphie growls at me, reminding me again that this is his home. Secretly, I know he wants to like me. He’s just not ready. The beach-inspired master suite feels like a sanctuary with the use of sand-colored bedding, blue accents and

naturally textured materials. Casual woven shades, metallic accents and an upholstered headboard come together to create a soothing and casually elegant mix. Metallic night sands and bedside lights set off delicate accessories and the mirrored geometric design gives the room a hint of glamor. A dark metal bed adds warmth to the cool, subtle tones in the room and the serene neutrals and textural fabrics add plushness to the room. An upholstered bench adds a little seating at the foot of bed and it’s graphic pattern coordinates with the dark bed and creamy linens. Add a natural fiber rug to soften the wood floor and the overall look is calming, relaxing, inviting and sophisticated. Its is such a fresh, textural and pretty look. The master bathroom was probably one of the biggest re-dos and the biggest task

was bringing in more light. Even though a window in the shower brought in a lot of light, the wall between the shower and the vanity was much larger, blocking the light and entry to the shower somewhat. It was difficult to see and feel how big the shower actually was because only part of it was visible. So that space was opened up, making the shower wall flush with the vanity. Just a few more inches makes a huge difference in the amount of light brought in and a little venting at the top of the shower door allows for moisture to escape while the window floods the space with light. The lavatory just had wallpaper installed and it is absolutely gorgeous. Its like a reproduction of a neoclassical wallpaper. A beautiful trellis design with a soft leafy pattern in what looks like a pale blue that’s subtly accented with a metallic gold. I love the stenciled look of the harlequin pattern as it adds a geometric punch yet is lighthearted and fresh with a slight shimmer. “We have been waiting for the wallpaper guy for months!” - Lisa Sophisticated walls of Carrera marble flank the tub wall making it feel as if you are bathing in the ocean. It appears to be one sheet but its actually separate tiles of Carrera marble inlaid in glass. Its fun to splurge in a small and defined space and the result is sensational. A couple extra pieces of marble were also used to create a bench and pieces in the shower. At the foot of the tub, open shelves are a natural choice for both must-have storage and nice-to-have decorative displays. Here you

will find towels and massage oils next to photos and candles and, of course, a jar of marbles... and I just love the symbolism. “Whenever someone supports you, or is kind to you, or sticks up for you, or honors what you share with them as private, you put marbles in the jar. When people are mean, or disrespectful, or share your secrets, marbles come out… Trust is built one marble at a time.” Brené Brown Both women work out of the house, although Lisa is on the downhill slide of retirement in the next few months, so the dedicated office space downstairs is Heidi’s. There’s a couch that folds out for overflow which they are getting ready to experience this month when Heidi’s family comes to the island for the first time...Even though the couple has a house just down the road. “Since we moved here, and we even have a house 1 mile up the road, everybody wants to come here. Everybody is a close relative at this point. We’re popular.” - Lisa Along with the renovation, a few closets were eliminated and there was a need to become creative with storage. In Heidi’s office, a small, half-sized closet was created to stow a few things like Heidi’s bikes and the home’s water filtration system. “I think we created that door just to have some storage space, Heidi cycles and it’s a nice place to store bikes. And the water filtration system. Heidi built a house in Dallas that was a very high efficient green house with water filtration system and LED lights so wanted to do the same here.” - Lisa

The hombre blue staircase leads up to the second floor via painted shades of blue. The couple shares that this was a bit of an art project in itself. The different shades fade into one another creating a somewhat whimsical vibe and a nice contrast against the white shiplap walls and the large piece of string art hanging in the landing. Heidi found the artist in Durham and they designed the piece together. It adds color and creativity in an otherwise unexpected space yet it’s size isn’t overpowering. A white chandelier hangs nearby shedding light and adding a bit of femininity to the space. There are three bedrooms upstairs and each has its own vibe and unmatchable view. The first room is not large in size but has everything a guest needs and a killer view to boot. A calming color palette of sea foam green and gray creates a relaxing feel and keeps the room light and bright. A tan upholstered headboard, with a bold yet soft arched design, is cushioned with a layer of pillows. The bedding is a subtle shade of green and an embroidered accent pillow offers a bit of texture to the bed. A silver metallic table adds a contemporary touch and catches the natural light from the adjacent door & windows reflecting

it into the room. A rug grounds the space and provides a bit of texture and warmth when stepping out of bed. “You need some window coverings... Especially upstairs because the sun blazes

in with the southern exposure...So things don’t get bleached out but allows some light to come in. People may want to sleep in. Upstairs the blinds have black out shades in them.” - Lisa on window treatments “Its nice when you don’t have to set your alarm and you don’t have to get up.” Heidi “The bath was a closet turned into a 1/2 bath so whoever stays here at least has a 1/2 bath. There is a bit of storage behind the mirror and behind the commode. There’s not much room so storage was important to get wherever we could.” - Heidi ‘We made better use of this bedroom if it at least had a 1/2 bath here.” - Lisa “Because when people come, they come in groups of like 9... We never invite just 2 people.” - Heidi

This simple bathroom is modern coastal at its very best. It’s a tiny yet brave room, painted a bold crisp blue against a white ceiling, trim and fixtures, giving it a very clean effect. A porthole mirrored medicine cabinet, modeled after a ship’s porthole, lends nautical appeal, valuable storage space and a whimsical touch. Accessories are used sparingly and there’s really no room for art, yet the limited space feels intimate and full of character. A small dynamically shaped, wall-mount sink brings style and functionality while making it feel like a ship’s compartment. Storage is provided for towels and bath products by a small built in cabinet over the commode, bringing additional space to even the smallest of bathrooms. Across the hall is Lisa’s office which doubles as the game room. This room use to

be a bunk room and what was once a closet is now Lisa’s office. The back wall, behind the desk, is painted a dark rich blue bringing a beautiful depth to the space. So this is another closet lost in the renovation but when Lisa stops working, her office can go away and the space can be used again for storage and will be more useful for the couples kids when they visit. “We don’t have small kids in the family right now so there’s a puzzle table, games, a place for my spin bike and for our kids to watch TV. The bunk room was cute but we don’t’ need it yet. We can always change that. But, it will be a while.” - Heidi Natural light and white walls keep the space feeling light. A round game table softens the space and comfy colorful seating brings a lovely organic softness to the room. The lightweight seating can be easily repositioned and combined into spontaneous groupings so it’s playful, practical and ensures that players at the table will be comfortable. Large windows and a vaulted blue ceiling bring a lighter-than-air feel to the space and a set of armchairs are outfitted with sand colored slipcovers and luxe green pillows. The artwork is fabulous and family photos hang from cleat’s on the opposite wall...One of which is Sophie’s first ferry ride and she looks so tiny! The second or middle bedroom has a clever grey and yellow color combination. The two hues couldn’t be more different yet they complement each other perfectly. Even though the room uses several very different patterns, soothing gray tones help tie the entire space together. A bed with a large studded headboard anchors the room and adds a bit of height to the arrangement. Natural light from the window illuminates the barely there glass lamps making them shine atop the bedside tables. A large graceful and modern armchair, with coordinating blanket, is sit-

Down the hall is the biggest bedroom which has it’s own bath so it’s always a big hit. The room looks clean and bright thanks to abundant natural light and a crisp white, blue and green color scheme. A dark metal bed frame and hanging lights add warmth to the cool tones and decorative pillows and art offer a wide range of textures. A modern wooden chair sits by the door, topped with fluffy pillow, adding texture while providing a cozy spot to read or gaze at the view. Elegant curves of metal and glass reflect light and color throughout the space and add splash of glamor.

uated in front of the large windows, creating an ideal spot to read or take in the view. French doors open to a deck with expansive views of the ocean while a neutral color scheme allows the focus to remain on the beautiful Bald Head surroundings. The room efficiently and stylishly provides everything a guest might need. It’s easy to imagine falling asleep to the sound of the waves in this serene, beautiful bedroom with a wonderful ocean view. This room looks like something out of a book. Again, storage was taken into consideration here and Heidi had the idea to add shiplap to the previous drywall and pull the wall out three feet to create hidden storage behind the wall. The door can be seen behind the night stand against the window. Pretty clever. “We live here so where do we put our Christmas decorations? There’s no attic and no basement and we eliminated 2 closets when we did the reno...One became a bathroom an one became her (Lisa’s) office so then we wondered...Where do we put the things we get to once a year?” -Heidi “Euro suitcases, Christmas decorations, boxes.. All that kind of stuff. Things you only get to once a year and there’s still plenty of room in here to function nicely even with putting that wall in.” - Lisa Just around the corner is a full bath furnished with a custom vanity providing ample storage without looking heavy, thanks to an open shelf on the bottom and large baskets to corral small toiletries and accessories. A hexagon-shaped marble tile floor, chrome handles, square mirrors and glass lights work perfectly together to unite this space and create a calm, cool and sophisticated feel. There’s a nice balance of light and dark here and especially with the airiness of the white walls. Don’t miss the black ‘makeup’ towels under the sink. Heidi saw these in a mag-

It was by working with Rich that we were able to see the value behind creative design and how it could allow us to unlock the potential behind our home’s century old walls. SHOWCASE Live, Loud & Full Of Life It’s Rock and Roll Just as It Should Be!

T

STORY BY: LISA P. STITES

he seventh annual Rock and Roll Party at the historic Amuzu Theatre in Southport will feature some of the best sounds of the 50’s and 60’s, with live musicians and singers primed to take listeners back in time.

This year’s cast of Rock and Roll Party performed on the State Port Pilot’s 4th of July parade float.

The band includes musicians on guitars, keyboard, synthesizer, saxophone and drums. Male and female singers join in on songs from The Temptations, Elvis Presley, The Everly Brothers, Patsy Cline, Percy Sledge, The Shangri-Las, Martha and the Vandellas, Wilson Pickett, Jerry Lee Lewis, The Four Tops, Tony Bennett and more. Songs include authentic reproductions of “Can’t Help Falling in Love,” “Land of 1000

Dances,” “Fever,” “Bye Bye Love,” “Woman, Woman,” “Just My Imagination,” “Heat Wave,” “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On,” “Ragdoll,” “I Left My Heart in San Francisco,” Percy Sledge’s “When A Man Loves A Woman,” “I Know a Place,” “Stop! In The Name of Love,” “Walkin’ After Midnight,” “Leader of the Pack,” “He’s a Rebel,” “Witch Doctor,” and “I Can’t Help Myself.” Musical director Cathy Furpless is also part

of the family that owns the Amuzu. She said when planning a musical revue, they try to pick songs that made it to the top 5 during their time. They also do plenty of research so they can share some of the music history during the show as well. Furpless said they do repeat some of the most popular songs, but try to make each show new to keep audiences “surprised and appreciative.” “I enjoy the creative aspects of these shows which naturally is manifested when you bring top quality, local performers together. We are so fortunate to have volunteers who share not only their musical and dramatic talents, but their organizational and critical thinking skills as well. They all work together as a family to help each other give the best performances possible,” Furpless said. The show runs August 5, 6, 18, 19 and 20 at 7:30 p.m. Matinee shows will be at 3 p.m. on August 7 and 21. Tickets are $20 and are on sale in Southport at Ricky Evans Art Gallery (211 N. Howe Street) and Color Me Carolina (414 Colfax Lane SE). These shows typically sell out quickly. The Rock and Roll Party features some staple singers of its own, with several veteran cast members making another appearance on stage, but a few newcomers will make their debut with the group too. The Amuzu Theatre, at 111 N. Howe Street, is owned by the Furpless family – Bill and Catherine. The Theater has a long history as an entertainment venue in Southport. It was 1912 when Price Furpless and Charles Gause, partners in the operation of a marine supply store on the waterfront in Southport, decided to expand their partnership and open a movie theatre. Price was Bill’s grandfather. The original theater was actually in a building next door to the current location. At the time the theater opened, silent movies

were shown and admission was just 5 cents for children and 10 cents for adults. Price wanted to build a larger theatre to be used for movies, theatrical troupes and other amusements. Price was a building contractor and a brick mason, and he did most of the work on his new theatre building himself by 1918. He and his wife Lilly ran the business – he managed the door and crowd, and she sold tickets and peanuts. There was also a small stage for live entertainment, such as local talent and traveling troupes or magicians. The Theater was closed for a time in the 1935, for repairs and possibly due to economics of the times during the Depression. Operations of the Amuzu changed to a father and son team in the early to mid-1940s, with the declining health and death of Lilly Furpless. B.L. (Bremen) Furpless (Bill’s father) worked with Price and took over management of the theatre in 1945. During World War II, the business was supported by the military presence at Fort Caswell and the fishing industry. The Amuzu Theatre opened for its first-ever Sunday showing in 1954. In 1962, the Theatre celebrated its 50th anniversary. Though still a teenager at the time, Bill was helping his mother run the Theatre by then. The opening of multi-cinemas in Wilmington, the introduction of cable television, and many more recreational activities being available in the area led to declining attendance in the 1970s. The theatre was only open fulltime in the summer and on weekends the rest of the year. The last movie shown was the reedited version of Close Encounters of the Third Kind on October 25, 1980. But also in the 1980s, the theatre took on a new role in the movie industry, playing host to the first of a few major films. In 1986, the front of the theatre was used in a scene in the movie Crimes of the Heart.

SHOWCASE The Amuzu Theatre 111 N. Howe Street Southport 910-523-2552 amuzutheatre.com

In 1997, the interior and the exterior of the theatre were used in several important scenes in the movie I Know What You Did Last Summer. The Amuzu was called the Southport Community Theatre in the movie. Interior shoots included Sarah Michelle Gellar’s beauty pageant scenes and the murder of Ryan Phillippe’s character in the balcony. There was another scene of Jennifer Love Hewitt running into the empty building looking for her friends after the pageant. On June 2, 2000, a black tie affair was held in the Amuzu to premiere Randy Jones’ The Dosher Documentary. In 2005, the newly-formed Stage II Pro-

ductions presented its first play, Jekyll and Hyde. During 2005 Stage II presented three other plays in the Amuzu. Between 2006 and 2010, 16 community theatre productions, including Jesus Christ Superstar and Chicago, were presented on the stage of the Amuzu, with Bill’s wife Cathy involved as one of the musicians. A concert promoter also presented six concerts during those years. In 2008 interior and exterior scenes of the movie The Secret Life of Bees were filmed at the Amuzu. Bill and Cathy, with the assistance of Amy and Matt McCarthy, also started producing original, live musical variety shows in the summer of 2009. These shows are produced to provide quality entertainment and also raise funds to help restore, remodel, and expand the historic theatre building. Cathy Furpless said the family has done some remodeling recently, by painting the façade and doing some repair work done on the metal work. They also replaced the windows across the front and opened that wall up as it appeared originally. “We have ordered a new Amuzu sign which hopefully will be installed before our August show,” she said. It will be in the same design as the present sign, but it will be lighted. We are very excited

about the upcoming new look, but will keep the historic sign preserved as a historic relic for display at some point. Bill and Cathy formed the Amuzu Theatre, LLC was in 2012. Bill is the theatre manager/operator, Cathy is the keyboard player, musical creator, and director of most of the shows. Daughters Laura and Catherine are both active in the shows. Laura has been involved in all of the Amuzu productions as a singer, musician, dancer, or director. Catherine is married to Matthew Smutko; Catherine stays involved as a singer, musician, dancer, or lobby assistant and Matthew helps in the lobby with concessions while their young daughter Lilly keeping them company during rehearsals and inspiring the cast. Furpless said it’s truly a family affair, a feeling of community which extends to the cast and crew and their families as well. “All of our shows are labors of love, the love of performing and admiration for our beloved Amuzu which is truly a Southport treasure reminiscent of a time gone by,” Furpless said. “We greatly appreciate the overwhelming support we have received from our community and invite everyone to come see what promises to be yet another memorable step back in time to this great era of American music.” 1

Music and Food For Your Soul Yacht Basin Eatery Rocks! STORY BY: AMI BROWN

S

outhport locals all know that the music scene thrives in this small community thanks in part to Yacht Basin Eatery. Jill Brown and her 86 year old father, Guiseppe (a.k.a. Joe) opened Yacht Basin Eatery (YBE) in 2010, and really livened up the place. Not only do they have great food and drinks, but offer the perfect scenic venue for local musicians.

YBE is proud to source local produce to support community growers and be part of the Brunswick Carolina Catch – fresh seafood movement. All their breads and pizza dough are homemade from scratch and their pizza is a true stand out signature dish. One thing that makes YBE unique is the variety and selection. They offer all the best fresh fish of course, but also perfection pastas, deli sandwiches and their crab cakes and fish tacos are also a specialty - dubbed the best in town. I chatted with a couple of YBE patrons and they seem to love the friendly atmosphere, watching the sunsets and the cold tasty beer. What else could you want? The eatery supports the community in many ways. From the locally sourced food, the budding musicians and did I mention fundraising activities? Well they are also a regular supporter of the CIS gala – which helps out the local schools each year. I found it to be the perfect spot - when most of the other restaurants were closed on July Fourth – YBE was rocking with a band, a BBQ grill cooking some amazing food – and the waterfront view of the fireworks was just the icing on the YBE cake! A little about the music: I have spent many warm evenings sitting by the water, feeling the breeze and listening to some great music. Open every day with a great variety of music lined up, at YBE you will be sure to find something you’ll fall in love with too. From Soul, Rock, to Country and Blues… The summer music scene is rocking at YBE. Their August musical line up includes:

Yacht Basin’s pizza dough is home made from scratch, it is a true stand out signature dish! Photo by : Ami Brown.

August 5 – The Dennis Walton Band

Jill is a critical care nurse by trade and Joe a retired Operating Engineer and former Marine who served in the Korean Conflict. They knew they wanted to get out of New Jersey and they scouted out to find the perfect waterfront property on the East Coast. The former shell shop had closed and the building had been sitting empty for two years. Jill took a huge leap of faith and bought it sight unseen. She remodeled it and created the concept of Yacht Basin Eatery. Jill also being a rock star, needed a venue to showcase her own musical venture, Jilli and the River Rat Band. (You can catch her band rocking other venue around the area too) Jill really wanted to amp up the music scene and give the year round residence a fun place to go even in the winter. As you know lots of places shut down, so YBE offers wintertime food and fun activities, when they are so limited around town.

August 7 – Parker Lanier

Don’t worry she really knows what she’s doing. With over 30 years of restaurant experience. She’s addicted and keeps coming back, but I think she’s finally found her home. (At least I hope so) And even though Joe is 86, he’s at YBE every day. You’ll see him there in his Marine hat, doing maintenance, errands and helping out around the place. He also enjoys the music, that’s obvious. I must mention the friendly and helpful wait staff. They will bend over backwards to help you out and give you what you want. Every visit I am greeted by name, big smiles and warm hugs! Twice a year YBE hosts the Great Oyster Roast Jamboree in the spring and fall. This all day event showcases five local bands and all you can eat oysters and shrimp. Look out for more info on their website, usually scheduled for the first weekend of November (www.ybenc.com or on Facebook)

W

hen the temperature hits 100 degrees, nothing can cool you off like a frozen drink! And what better time to whip up a tropical treat, than when fresh produce is readily available. Each of these tasty concoctions can be made with or without alcohol. All you need is a blender! If you make one of our suggestions, snap a picture and post it on our FB page! Enjoy! STRAWBERRY DAIQUIRI • 1 can Frozen Strawberry Daiquiri Mix (I like Barcardi brand) • 4-5 Fresh or Frozen Strawberries (if you use fresh..freeze them first) • 1/2 of a banana - FROZEN • I cup Coconut Rum • Ice Put the daiquiri mix, frozen strawberries, frozen banana and rum in the blender pitcher. Fill the pitcher up the rest of the way with ice and blend until smooth and creamy. Garnish with a fresh strawberry or mint leaf. Makes four cocktails.

THE CLASSIC PINA COLADA BLUEBERRY MARGARITAS

• 3-4 oz light run (optional)

• 1 cup frozen blueberries

• 2 cups of fresh or frozen pineapple chunks

• 1/3 cup tequila • 2 TB triple sec • 1/4 cup fresh lime juice • 1-2 TB agave syrup Place all the ingredients in a blender pitcher. Before adding ice to the pitcher, be sure it is broken up into small pieces. Then pour on top of the ingredients (about half way). Rub the rim of your glass with agave syrup and dip in salt or sugar. Blend margarita’s until smooth and pour in prepared glass. Garnish with lime wedge. Makes two cocktails.

• 4 oz of Cream of Coconut • 1-2 cups of ice In a blender combine: rum, cream of coconut, pineapple chunks and ice. Blend until smooth. Divide between two glasses. Garnish with a cherry and pineapple chunk. Makes two cocktails.

LEMONADE PEACH BOMBS • 1 pound (about 3 cups) fresh or frozen sliced peaches • 1/4 cup sugar • 3/4 cup frozen lemonade concentrate • 1/4 cup vodka (plain, citrus or peach) • 1 TB fresh squeezed lemon juice Fill a blender pitcher with the peaches, sugar, lemonade, vodka and lemon juice. If you are using fresh peaches, add about 2 cups of ice. Blend until smooth. Garnish with a lemon or peach slice. Makes four cocktails.
