FROM THE PUBLISHERS

ovember is the month between the birthday month of both Leland and Southport Magazines and the anniversary of Lisa and I becoming the magazines owners and publishers. Very appropriately I think, I always feel especially grateful this time of year, but this particular November I’m more overwhelmed with gratitude than normal. We lost Rufus the Newshound earlier this year, but as I write this, I’m looking at our new Newshound Trainee, Copper. We adopted Copper from the great folks at the Brunswick County Animal Services (where there are plenty more doggies in need of a home if you are looking), so of course we are incredibly thankful for the work these pubic servants do. Also, we are one month away from the launch of Shallotte and South Brunswick Islands Magazine, which makes me very grateful for a growing county and a healthy business environment. Much of the country, and the world, doesn’t have what we do here. So Happy Thanksgiving, and may you and yours be blessed with health and happiness. --Jeffrey

Southport’s Pearl

Building A Business In Interesting Times STORY AND PHOTOS BY JEFFREY STITES

W

e have a super soft spot for The Pearl and it’s owner, Sylvia Liedtke-Ognan. When we were working to purchase Southport Magazine, the magazine’s former owner and founder, Kris Beasley, took me around to meet some of her advertisers. As it turned out, Sylvia had just bought Deborah’s Place and turned it into The Pearl. Little did we know then, in late 2019, as brand new business owners, what the next few years would hold. Both The Pearl and Southport Magazine have been through a lot together, and it was great to sit down with Sylvia and chat about about her life as a small business owner. Sylvia said she had always wanted to own a small business, but always envisioned something in the line of baking. “When the kids were younger, I stayed home with them and I did baking and cooking for a place in Woodstock, New York. I would deliver the baked good weekly so I could stay home with the kids. But I never anticipated running a retail shop. Never,” she said. But when she moved to North Carolina, her neighbors needed help in their store in downtown Southport, and she began working at Deborah’s. She worked at the shop for about two years, until one day an opportunity knocked and Sylvia answered. “They decided they wanted to retire and they asked me if I wanted to buy the business, and I said okay.

was the point of sale system, bringing on a new computer system that wasn’t here before. It was just a register,” she said. She had to shop around to find the right one, train all the employees on it, then enter every piece of inventory in the store into the new system. “That’s been a blessing in disguise because it lets us know what we have and

“It’s exciting, it’s really exciting,” she said. “It’s given me such perspective on so many different things. I had the accounting background, so the business sense I had. I worked for an HVAC company in upstate New York for 13 years and I had teaching experience, so I could speak with customers, not a problem. It’s just all the other little nuances associated with retail that I didn’t know and I learned as we went along.” Finding and setting up a point of sale system was one of the first challenges. “One of the biggest things Celebrating Eleven Years of Serving Our Community

don’t have and what we need to offer,” she explained. “People get a printed receipt with what they bought, who sold it, if it was on sale. And I have all that information and it helps me track the sales, like how much clothing I’m selling or how much jewelry I’m selling, how much I did last year versus this year.” Sylvia said that she took some cues from the sorts of things Deborah’s used to carry, but has made selections on her own. “A lot of the suppliers closed during COVID, so I had to look for new things, things that aren’t what everyone else carries. We brought in some shoes, brought in pet supplies. We have a lot of dog lovers that come into the store hand bring their pets and they just love to buy treats. We have treats we buy from a small business owner, and we just try to hear what people are looking for.” Supporting other small businesses is a priority for Sylvia. “I’d say 35-40 percent of our inventory is from the small businesses. I try to look for unique products, for local products,” she said. “We have the Southport Sisters in here, and Deborah’s sister makes shadow boxes, we have two local ladies who do jewelry, we have another lady who works for me part time who does pottery, Bald Head Coffee & Tea is in here, there’s a lady out of Oak Island who does jewelry for us too. And we have local authors — Tom Kelso, Karen Whalen, and Peter Hoyer. “It’s important because people come in here and they don’t want all the products that are, for example, made in China. They want to see some unique products, local-

ly made, locally sourced, or something that gives back.” While some other of The Pearl’s suppliers aren’t necessarily local, Sylvia said she looks for businesses that give back in some way. “It may not be locally sourced, but something that gives back. We have a company named Basic Spirits that gives back to wildlife, marine life and arts and education. It’s all pewter, and it’s beautiful,” Sylvia said. “We try to support a bunch of women-owned businesses, too,” she said. “We have a couple of jewelry lines, one out of Asheville called Rebecca’s is all sterling silver,

We had just gone to Atlanta to a trade show and purchased a bunch of stuff, we were aware of COVID but didn’t realize the full magnitude until months later. We just had all our deliveries then we had to shut down for two months. We’d just started the business then we were hit with the pandemic and trying to plow our way through that.

“Then we had the sewer project that was down here which tore up the main street and basically shut down Southport for quite some time because of the limited access. They sat in front of our store for two months. And then we had to endure a hurricane. We had protests that were down here. So there’s been one hurdle after another and I think we’ve learned how to deal with that and how to manage different things through social media. We now have

an online store, which was more successful before than it is now,” she said.”Now people just want to be out and shopping and touch and feel, they don’t want the online aspect as much.” One thing you’ll notice about The Pearl is how it looks different almost every time you go in. Sylvia explained how she pulls that off. “We have a some great ladies, and they are great at coming up with new ideas,” she said. “I just let them go with what they think. I say ‘Use your imagination, do what you think.’ If I don’t like it I’ll go back and change it. We try to switch it up so it’s not boring. We have great employees and we all collaborate.” Right now, the crew at The Pearl is getting ready for the big holiday season, and trying to offer as much as they can. Packing in all they pack in is one of the hardest parts of the business, according to Sylvia. “We have 1,200 square feet and we try to pack in 2,400 square feet of stuff. “I wish we could add on but we can’t. Every year since I’ve owned the business we’ve done a mini renovation project. The

first year we covered all the walls with fabric and put slat walls up. The second year we changed out a lot of displays. Last year we removed all the carpet from the floor and we painted the flooring to make it cleaner,” she explained. “This year’s project is redoing the whole register area and open that all up to make it easier for flow, wider.” What’s been the best part of the job? “Speaking with the customers, seeing how happy certain things make them,” Sylvia said. “We see people from all over, from Alaska and Poland, and we get stories. Even the locals, they’ll come in weekly or every other weekend say ‘wow you switched that up!’” I asked Sylvia if she knew in 2019 exactly what the next few years would hold, would she still decide to start up The Pearl? “I think I would still do it. It’s like any job. It’s challenging, you have your good days, you have your bad days. I wouldn’t want to change it. I’ve always wanted to be my own boss,” she said. “All the lessons and all the jobs that I’ve had have compiled to me owning my own business.”

Coffee & Tea House

Bald Head Coffee Has A New Home In BSL STORY BY JEFFREY STITES PHOTOS BY CONTRIBUTED

O

ne morning a few years ago the lovely and talented Lisa was sniffing around our kitchen saying “What smells so good?” After little bit she realized it was the bag of coffee I’d picked up from our new advertisers, Bald Head Coffee. We’ve been loyal customers ever since. Every Monday morning in the spring and summer I’m at the Oak Island Farmers Market picking up my bag of whole bean Highlander Grog coffee and chatting with Bald Head Coffee owners Steve and Pam Lewis.

When we interviewed them for an article a couple years ago, Steve mentioned his goal of finding a spot to open a coffee shop. Well, his dream has become a reality with the opening of Bald Head Coffee & Tea House at 3481 George II Highway in Boiling Spring Lakes. We spoke to Steve and Pam about their new venture and what it will offer the community.

For anyone who isn’t familiar, please give us an idea who Bald Head Coffee is and how long you’ve been in business.

Bald Head Coffee started in 2020, however Steve has been in the coffee busi-

ness for over 40 years. He opened a coffee shop in Atlanta in the 80s and also worked for Melita Coffee, and Starbucks as a trainer. Bald Head is a locally owned business that strives to create a beverage experience for our customers.

Has a coffee house always been in your plans?

Our new Bald Head Coffee & Tea House evolved as the business evolved. We started as an online business, shipping coffee around the country, then we began Farmers Markets and created a loyal local following. Then in the spring of 2022 we began the search for where we would be able to open

a Coffee house. Happily, we found this BSL location and we are thrilled to be open for business!

What all do you offer in the coffee house?

We offer over 50 varieties of drinks from Coffee-based, Espresso-based, Teas, Hot Chocolate, Energy drinks, Frappes, Smoothies, Cold Brew and Nitro Cold Brew, Matcha, Pour-overs, French Press, Flights, and Boxes of Coffee to go. The food offered varies from yogurt parfaits, croissants, breakfast croissants, bagels, breakfast burritos, scones, cookies, salads, sandwiches, desserts, and gelato from Italy!

What was the biggest challenge in opening your new spot?

Our biggest challenge opening our new coffee house was in the building process. We understand that this is normally a challenge for anyone building out, so we worked through the process and are very happy with how it has all turned out.

Now that you are open, what do you enjoy most about having your own coffee house featuring your products?

The best part of our coffee house is meeting and greeting the people that come to visit. It is a joy to see friends sitting and chatting over coffee, having people working on their lap tops over a latte in a mug, Celebrating Eleven Years of Serving Our Community

and treating drive through customers to our friendly faces and delicious drinks.

What do you like about being located in a growing Boiling Spring Lakes community?

We have received a warm welcome and the neighbors we share have been kind and excited to see us. We have donated some of our lunch products to the police staff and also to the food pantry. We hope to be able to be a big part of this community as we grow.

Pretty Enough To Eat

Southern, A Gathering Place; Café Koa; and The Cheese Shoppe are a few businesses that currently include her edible flowers in their creations. Since I bartend at one of those restaurants, I’m constantly getting asked if the flowers are edible and if someone is being a little shy about eating it, I’ll eat one with them. There are times where Casey has to outsource from other places if — for some reason — she can’t grow the product herself, but she makes sure to stick

f you go to a Southport restaurant and notice a pretty flower on your plate, remember that it’s not just there for looks, so don’t be afraid to eat it. A very familiar face might have even grown it in her own yard. Casey Silar, the owner and operator of Gemini Flora, has been adding color to restaurants, homes and businesses alike with her home-grown flowers for a little more than three years now. Her senior superlative in high school was “most likely to sell flowers.” Today she looks back and laughs at that, because her young 18-year-old self didn’t originally have that goal. Casey moved to Southport in 2012 from Asheville, NC to take a job in Environmental Chemistry. In her free time, gardening was a passionate hobby and she always enjoyed growing cut flowers and making bouquets for herself, family, and friends. Casey mentioned the huge change from the soil in Asheville to the sandy soil she now has to work with. “But with a lot of trial and error, I’ve come a long way since then,” she said. Although she still dabbles with work in the environmental field, she wanted to run her own business with something that inspired her while still working in a position that required her to be hands on. In October of 2020, she took a risk and decided to turn her gardening hobby into a full-time job. Casey wanted to start out doing container gardens for local businesses to get her foot in the door, and it was the perfect way to showcase her work considering they were displayed out front for all to see. “It was manageable for one person,” she said. “It was an interesting concept that I didn’t see in the area, but I saw a ton of potential for it with so many storefront businesses and homes.” The great thing about her container gardens is that none are the same. “The fun thing about doing container gardens is each client has different tastes so it’s fun to find and arrange plants that fit their individual personalities, style, and preference,” she said.

Casey spent the winter of her first year converting her front yard to a cut garden. She couldn’t recall the exact number of different plants she has growing, but her estimate was a little more than 100! I got the pleasure of being able to go and see all the plants and flowers with my own eyes and I can confidently say it’s a gardener’s dream. Since I didn’t get blessed with a green thumb, I had a lot of questions and Casey was sweet enough to give me the inside scoop on how the process works. There was so much to explore, and she practically had to kick me out by the end of our meeting. In the spring of her first year running the business, she started offering bouquets and eventually added edible flowers into the mix. “I was constantly researching and soon discovered so much

of what I was growing was edible,” she said. “With all the restaurants around here, I saw a market for it, and I decided to start growing more edible flowers than what I already had.” The edible flowers have been a newfound favorite of Casey’s. She loves the process of harvesting and packaging the flowers, but she especially loves hand delivering them to the locations and seeing how each chef uses them for their different dishes.

Biz Feature with organic growers. On top of her own cut garden, she also maintains and mows a five-acre field in Wilmington. She has permission to grow for herself on the outer perimeter. This also helps with curb appeal, the local wildlife, pollinators, and with run off to the Cape Fear River. Casey is about five volunteer hours shy from completing her Master Gardner Training through the North Carolina Agricultural Extension Service, which consists of 75 hours of in-person class work taught by local experts and the completion of 40 hours of volunteer work. This was a fun way for her to meet other people in the area that are as passionate about gardening as she is. She loves focusing her volunteer hours on working with local school programs and students. She enjoys getting the youth excited about gardening and making gardening and food sources more accessible. Casey is preparing for the busy fall and winter season coming up and hopes to help with anyone’s floral needs. Remember to eat your flowers.

Always Ready Cars

our first location on Bald Head Island has helped us perfect this program – we take care of many carts there and hope to be able to help our Southport community just the same.

Riding The Wave Of Electric Vehicles STORY BY JEFFREY STITES PHOTOS CONTRIBUTED

I

f you haven’t noticed, golf carts aren’t just for the links or cruising around Bald Head Island anymore. As the use of electric vehicles of all shapes and sizes has grown, so has Always Ready Cars, expanding from their Bald Head Island location to a shop at 4019 Long Beach Road in front of the Cape Fear Jetport. We spoke to Leanna Cable, Sales and Marketing Manager for Always Ready, about supplying the growing demand.

Can you give us a little history of Always Ready? How long have you been in business?

Always Ready Cars has been in business for a VERY long time – it started more than 10 years ago on Bald Head Island as Gene’s Golf Cars. The current owner, Dan McConnell, has grown the business from one location on Bald Head Island to now include our store in Southport in front of the airport and a warehouse location in Boiling Spring Lakes for additional cart inventory storage.

What products do you offer?

We are Southport’s local Authorized Club Car Dealer, and sell their consumer Club Car Onward product-line as well as their commercial line of vehicles, including Carryall and Transporter models. We also sell Bintelli electric vehicles. Our most popular product from Bintelli is their Beyond model Street Legal golf cart – now becoming much more common in Southport (you’ll know them by their bright dis-

tinctive colors) – plus we can order any of their E-Bikes line. Going beyond just sales – we also offer maintenance programs to customers who are interested in signing up for some kind of annual service contract with us. Having

Can you explain the difference between a golf cart and a Low Speed Vehicle (LSV)? We sell golf carts and low speed (street legal) vehicles. One of the first things we will ask a customer when they walk through the door at our Southport store is where they are located. Oak Island requires carts to be street legal (Caswell Beach and handicapped registered carts being the exceptions). Southport, on the other hand, allows both street legal vehicles (LSVs) and golf carts. Golf carts are typically slower and don’t require a VIN, windshield wiper, speedometer, DOT windshield, side mirrors, plus a few other things which LSVs are required to have. Golf carts are usually 19 mph or less, while LSVs are required to be able to drive at 21-25mph.

How have you seen the electric vehicle market change, especially locally?

We discuss the golf cart market as being

Commu nity very fluid…it has changed a lot in general through the country over the last few years. Like many markets, the golf cart market was severely affected in 2020-21 by COVID-19. The price of golf carts increased at that time, and with rising inflation in our current market, they haven’t really declined going into the present. You might think that might slow our market down – but it has not. Quite the contrary, the rate of growth in Brunswick County, the increasing popularity of electric vehicles, and more than that, I think the rising popularity of a lifestyle vehicle like a nice open air golf cart that you can decorate and make your own individualized “thing” – are really things that has contributed to the rise in popularity of golf carts and LSVs….that and parking, but that is a totally different conversation.

Do you have a typical customer? What are they like if so?

We really don’t…that’s one thing that I love about this job and the area that we live in! We have some of the most interesting customers from all walks of life ranging from recent retirees to young families.

Can you speak to the safety features in today’s low speed vehicles?

Low speed vehicles are required to have headlights, tail lights, brake lights, a horn, seat belts, DOT-rated windshield, a windshield wiper, and side mirrors. Upgrades available on some of our carts which are kind of nice from a safety standpoint: 3-point seat belts and back-up cameras.

Community er that is in his 80s and bought one to be able to ride the entire length of Oak Island again. He’s told us so many times how much he loves this bike.

What makes an electric bike a great choice for our communities?

I think they are a great choice for our communities for several reasons, but two of the more important ones I’ll mention here in the interest of not being longwinded are probably parking, and the environment.

How long have you carried electric bikes?

We’ve carried the electric bikes from Bintelli for about one year now.

Can you explain what they are and how they work? Are they pedaled and electric driven?

All the electric bikes we sell have both a trigger throttle and a pedal-assist mode. Pedal-assist basically just means that you are still putting some effort into pushing the

pedals and moving the bike yourself (so you are still getting exercise!), but you can allow the motor to assist you in pedaling the bike. Pedal assist usually has several different settings, so you can do a lot of work pedaling, or just a little, depending on your needs. The trigger-throttle on the other hand engages the motor and allows you to use the bike without pedaling at all if you want.

Who do the electric bikes most appeal to in your experience?

I would say our biggest market for electric bikes are retirees. We have one custom-

First parking – of course bikes and golf carts take up a lot less space, so the increased use these modes of transportation in communities which do have known parking problems during the summer months could potentially be one means of helping ease that congestion. I think the environment is of course an even more important reason that electric vehicles like E-Bikes or golf carts are a great choice for our local communities. In an ideal world I think anyone in one of our local communities would be able to take their golf cart to all their day-to-day activities

from grocery shopping to dinner to taking fido to the dog park – in the long run saving our local environment from unnecessary vehicle emissions, and saving everyone gas at the same time…plus driving a golf cart or riding an E-Bike is just more fun!

What are your future plans for Always Ready?

For now we just hope to continue to grow and serve all our existing, new and future customers in the Southport, Oak Island, Bald Head Island, and surrounding areas.

His appearance is sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Southport-Oak Island. The Gullah Geechee traditionally resided in the coastal areas and sea islands of North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. Descendants of Africans who were enslaved on the rice, indigo and cotton plantations of the lower Atlantic coast, they created a unique culture known for distinctive arts, crafts, foods, music, and language, the latter of which has

influenced traditional Southern vocabulary and speech patterns.

Daise served almost 20 years as Vice President for Creative Education at Brookgreen Gardens in Murrells Inlet, SC, where he created and implemented programs, events, and exhibits that showcased the significance of Gullah Geechee heritage. He is a former chairman of the federal Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor Commission and the recipient of numerous awards, including the Governor’s Distinctive Achievement Award of South Carolina.

Daise appeared in the 1990s awarding-winning children’s television series “Gullah Gullah Island,” which taught young people about the Gullah culture. He is an author, performing artist, and educator known for the entertaining way he shares stories,

Education Pathways

Brunswick Community College and UNCW

I

n a significant leap forward for higher education accessibility, Brunswick Community College (BCC) is thrilled to announce a new partnership with the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) through the innovative PathWays program, set to launch in early 2024. This collaborative initiative aims to simplify the transfer process for students, providing them with guaranteed admissions and comprehensive support as they pursue their four-year degrees. The PathWays program, previously known as UNCW Pathways to Excellence, underscores UNCW’s commitment to creating diverse pathways for students across North Carolina. UNCW has established partnerships with all 58 state community colleges through this pioneering program, ensuring eligible students a seamless transition to university life. “BCC strives to ensure our students have every opportunity to pursue their personal, professional, and academic goals,” said Dr.

Kevin Lee, Vice President of Academic Affairs and Chief Academic Officer at BCC. “This partnership provides guaranteed admission for our students who wish to further their education by attending UNCW. In addition, BCC can provide local on-site advising with a Transfer Success Coordinator from UNCW at our campus and application fee waivers to lower upfront costs for our students.” Chancellor Aswani K. Volety expressed his enthusiasm about the initiative, “We

Celebrating Eleven Years of Serving Our Community

want to make sure there are many roads that lead to becoming a UNCW Seahawk. Through PathWays, we are collaborating with our state education partners to reduce barriers and simplify the transfer process for all students seeking educational opportunities in our state.” Eligible BCC students pursuing Associate in Arts (AA), Associate in Science (AS), Associate in Engineering (AE), Associate in

Arts Teacher Preparation (AATP) or Associate in Science Teacher Preparation (ASTP) degrees will benefit from this transformative partnership. To qualify, students must complete the UNCW PathWays Interest Form (available online at https://apply. uncw.edu/register/ pathwaystoexcellence), have at least 24 transferable credit hours from BCC, and maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher. Participants in the PathWays program will work with a Transfer Student Success Coordinator, who will assist them in crafting a personalized transfer plan based on their interests and intended major. Additionally, transfer students will enjoy waived UNCW application fees and receive priority consideration for merit scholarships and deadlines.

ART BEAT

Finding Treasures

ing collapsed at some point, and all the molds were in huge piles strewn out in the dirt and full of bugs. Many were broken, separated, or had rain damage. And he just wanted someone to use them and not let them get taken to the dump. So he said he would leave them there for us to go through.

Artitsts Are Able To Carry On A Legacy STORY AND PHOTOS BY CARLA EDSTROM

A

s an artist, I can’t tell you how often I have been offered art supplies when people are clearing out of their homes. People go all-in on projects to create their craft and end up with a lot of stuff when their interests have changed. As a potter, it’s often their mother’s old, non-working kiln or hundreds of plaster doll molds people try to give me.

A few months ago, I was asked if I wanted ceramic molds that a local person was giving away. Honestly, I am not really into painted tchotchkes or ceramic dolls made from molds. Since I make pottery from scratch using a pottery wheel, casting molds was not my thing. But that all changed when one of my good friends and pottery student, Ali Travis, called me and asked the question that would change my life as I know it: “How

do you feel about ceramic molds?” My first response to her was, “Ugh, I don’t want a bunch of ceramic molds. But are there any Christmas trees? Because they are cool.” Her answer was, “They said there were no Christmas trees.” Bummer. But then she said, “I think we should still check it out.” I remember seeing those ceramic trees in the 70’s as a child at Christmas time with the lights in them. Almost everyone’s mother or grandmother had gone to ceramics class and made a Christmas tree. It was a tradition in those days. And having a light-up ceramic tree has become very popular again. I had been secretly wishing I could find one of my own.

Celebrating Eleven Years of Serving Our Community

I have turned down many opportunities to acquire molds. And I had no room or interest in them at all. Period. But on this particular day this summer, for some reason, I let my guard down and decided that looking at molds would be loads of fun. Ali said 3 different people had called her to see if she wanted the molds or if she knew someone who did. We decided that we should at least look into it. So we did. The next thing I knew,

There were piles of white plaster molds all over the ground. It was crazy how many were just strewn about. And honestly, it was sad to see someone’s livelihood just outside, exposed to the elements, rotting away in the dirt along with a part of history. Ali and I walked around picking up molds here and there, and we took several home that day. And guess what? We found three Christmas tree molds. Ali and I were in her truck and on our way to see these molds. We just really planned on looking for Christmas trees or anything else cool. What we saw was way more than we expected. We got to the decrepit home that had just been sold and was met by the man who bought the property and his workers clearing the backyard with a backhoe. He explained that the lady who lived there years before had a business pouring molds and selling the greenware and kiln fired bisque ware. Unfortunately, the molds were left out in her shed for years after she passed away. The build-

So, for the next several weeks and months, I would go out to the pile wearing gloves and boots after work or on weekends with other students and friends and look through this mess of plaster molds in the coastal NC blazing summer heat. We found Buddah, turtles, frogs, fish, and other figurings. We found dogs, birds, cats, elephants, camels, giant chess pieces, mugs and bowls, and questionable figurings. And several items with mushrooms on them! And more Christmas trees. Everything was vintage from the 1960’s to the 80’s. I learned how to make the slip to cast

them and have cast several, including one of the small trees. Some of my students have had fun helping me with the process; we are all learning together. We are also preserving a small part of history that was momentarily forgotten. It’s been a fun process learning how to cast the molds, and although I have not counted how many molds we saved, it’s a few hundred. And now my garage and lean-to are full of molds, and I’m still trying to figure out what we will do with all of them. Still, I am happy we spent time-saving the molds for a new generation of ceramic artists to play with.

The Civil War At Sea

happened, or the immense effort required to actively contribute to the war effort.

Brunswick Civil War Roundtable Meeting

The Union Navy was much larger and more powerful than the Confederate Navy blockading the Confederate coast, preventing the South from importing goods or exporting its products, and conducting raids on Southern ports and cities. The Confederate Navy was never able to break the Union blockade, but did achieve some notable successes, including the historic sinking of the USS Monitor in 1862.

STORY CONTRIBUTED

M

any who attended the Oct. 3 Brunswick Civil War Round Table meeting were surprised to learn that award-winning author Hampton Newsome was the guest speaker. Shortly before the meeting date, the scheduled speaker Dwight Hughes, who had planned to speak on the Civil War Navy, had to cancel for personal reasons. Fortunately, Newsome, who was scheduled to speak at the Nov. 7 meeting, was available and graciously agreed to take center stage in his place. As the saying goes, “the show must go on!”

Newsome captivated his audience with a presentation based on his recently published book entitled, “Gettysburg’s Southern Front: Opportunity and Failure at Richmond.” He spoke about a little-known Federal offensive against Richmond during the Gettysburg Campaign. In fact, he commented that this segment of the campaign may rank as one of the Union’s most compelling lost opportunities which might have changed the course of the Civil War. Despite the guest speaker change, his presentation delighted the audience, and a good time was had by all!

L o o k i n g ahead, the Tuesday, Nov. 7 meeting, we will now welcome back guest speaker Dwight Hughes, U.S. Naval Academy graduate, author, Civil War historian, and frequent speaker on Civil War naval history. His presentation is entitled “The Naval Civil War in Theaters Near and Far.” The meeting will be held at Hatch Auditorium on Caswell Beach and everyone is welcome to attend. The visitor fee is $10, which can be applied toward the $25 annual membership dues. Registration begins at 6:15 pm and the program starts at 7 pm.

D w i g h t Hughes summarized his presentation about the Civil War Navy by saying, “The Civil War was principally a land conflict, but it was not only that; naval operations were more than just peripheral or

supporting. Navy theaters of operation complete the picture, providing fascinating and enlightening perspectives on the conflict.” Almost nothing in the history and traditions of the United States Navy prepared it for the challenges of civil war in the early 1860s. The peacetime navy would not shift smoothly into crisis mode. At the onset of the war both sides faced the challenge with a lack of foresight or preparation. They could not possibly envision what eventually

In hindsight, the Civil War Navy was a major turning point in the history of naval warfare; e.g., the introduction of steam power and ironclad ships leading to new naval tactics, shallow-draft vessels, torpedoes, submersibles, plus it significantly impacting the outcome of the war, ensuring the Union victory.
