f you couldn’t tell by the hearts all over the place, this is The Love Issue! Since love comes in all sorts of flavors, we have all sorts of “love stories” for you this month. We begin with our community’s idea of “What Love Is” and follow it up with stories about a cookbook dedicated from wife to husband, finding a home for homeless families, and providing books for everyone no matter their means. Even our BIz Q&A features a photogrpaher in love with life on Oak Island, so it’s safe to say we’re all in on this LOVE thing. Which is a happy place to be.
O
h, and at right you’ll find Gracie, who we mistakenly left out of last month’s Pet Issue. Gracie is a Good Dog and deserves her time in the spotlight.

e asked last month for photos to illustrate what love meant to our readers and we had some interesting responses. During such a strange and often troubling year, we all leaned on something, or someone, to help us through. We were able to take a step back, in many cases, and appreciate what we had. Some of us took the bull by the horns and moved forward despite the pandemic...amd riots.....and a hurricane. Love wins. That’s the lesson here I think. Enjoy this celebration of love from your friends and neighbors, and appreciate everyone and everyhting that brings a song to your onw heart, this month and always.

The Flavor of Love “The Flavors of La Polena” Cookbook Was Labor of Love For Innkeeper STORY BY JEFFREY STITES, PHOTOS CONTRIBUTED
F
ood can certainly be a love language. Whether try to recreate a loved one’s childhood favorites and dishes we’ve enjoyed together on our travels, or if we pour our hearts and souls into our own recipes that become shared favorites, we can certainly show our love in the kitchen. For someone who has had a love of food running as a thread through her entire life, the language of cooking is a natural way to express love especially in the toughest times. The Flavors of La Polena, full of recipes from Innkeeper/Owner Suzanne Foster, is a dedication to her husband Jeff (she calls him JD) as he begins his second fight against cancer. “During the process of finding an editor, JD was diagnosed with cancer a second time. He was just beginning to taste again! During one of our intimate talks, I asked JD what he wanted from me. His wish was that I continue to run the Inn. ‘It’s your dream!’ He said. His second request was to be his support. JD has always loved my cooking. His daily texts, ‘what’s for breakfast?’ tell me he’s having a good day. It just seemed natural to dedicate this book to him,” Suzanne said. Of course Jeff’s favorite, Stuffed French Toast, is included, but you won’t find it in the “Breakfast” section. There is no “Breakfast” section. This cookbook is organized by season, an idea that came to Suzanne in the garden. “I first started thinking of a cookbook when I built my herb garden. My first COVID project while the Inn was closed. Like the herbs, the Seasons dictate what is fresh,” she said. The book’s dedication explains, “In this cookbook I chose Seasons at they relate to our Inn and the flow of guests. The seasons dictate the fresh ingredients used and as the verse says, there is a Season for Everything and a Time for every matter under the Heavens.” The book was also a product of
guest demand, something Suzanne can certainly identify with. “When JD and I met, we enjoyed trying new restaurants of all ethnic types. In our travels we have always searched out the local faire found on the back roads. This is where you get to meet the owner and locals, learning the story behind a favorite recipe,” her dedication explains.”The same holds true at LaPolena. Our guests have frequently asked for recipes of their favorites so I started adding a recipe to our newsletter each month.” Those newsletter recipes, and more, have found their way into this new cookbook. Food has been a thread throughout Suzanne’s life from her earliest days. “My father worked at Kellogg’s in Battle Creek and I grew up on cereal, which is why I won’t eat it today!” she said. Later, while working in real estate in Oregon, Suzanne founded a food-based charity.
Fields of Dreams Offering Vintage Refurbished items. Home Decor, Decorative Wall Art, Unique Gifts along with Featured local artists work. Hemp soap, and sugar scrubs all locally made.
“In 2006, I was the creator and Director of The Table, a restaurant and grocery store in a suburb of Portland, Oregon,” she said. “Our primary donor was Whole Foods. This was my calling after being the Director of the Meals Ministry at our church for ten years. When I departed, there were over 150 volunteers and the County was using The Table in their Community Work Release program. I understand it is still in operation today under a different name.” Suzanne and Jeff left Portland for Southport in 2018, opening the La Polena bed and breakfast in October of that year. “The day after we arrived in South-

CURRENTS port, we had our first guests; contractors cleaning up Hurricane Florence,” she said.
Suzanne is inviting that community family to a VIP launch of her cookbook on Wednesday, February 10 from 5-7 pm. The event will raise funds for Jeff’s medical bills and cancer research. “I have asked a few talented local chefs to prepare and feature some of my recipes during our event. Videos will be streaming to see how they are made as you taste the many flavors of the evening,” she said. Dress is cocktail attire and guitarist Galen Hunsucker will provide entertainment.
Since then, Suzanne has been serving up a two or three course breakfast and evening dessert to all her guests, so she had plenty to choose from for her cookbook. “All the recipes are favorites I have used over the years. Many have been created for LaPolena,” she said. “The difficulty is writing them down since I have them in my head and I don’t measure when cooking.” Suzanne sought help with putting the cookbook together, and says she was incredibly fortunate to find the perfect editor. “The cookbook’s Editor is Amelia Collins from Leland,” she said. “I had 26 applicants and narrowed it down to three. Amelia had a dozen recipes pulled from my newsletter and already created the beginnings of my cookbook accompanying her application. She’s a self starter and so creative. I liked how she had my vibe implemented in a book before we ever met.”
Suzanne and Jeff Foster
But the mechanics of book writing and publishing weren’t the only hurdle Suzanne had to cross. “As a very private person, I was reluctant to share recipes and share JD’s story,” she said. “Realizing that it’s his story and his choice to

share was most difficult for me to accept. Once I began answering friends’ ‘how are you doing?’ with an honest answer, I realized this is a small community who embraces. We are not different. We are just like your family.”
Also from Suzanne’s dedication, “....February may be Valentines, but it is also JD’s birthday. I am thankful to celebrate another birthday with my Valentine. May you continue to enjoy my cooking JD, because I pray you will join me at the breakfast table for many years to come….”

Fighting Homelessness Creating A Place For Families In Need STORY BY AND PHOTOS BY JEFFREY STITES
T
hough it can often be invisible to us, homelessness has long been an issue in Brunswick County and the economic disruptions of the COVID pandemic are only going to present additional challenges. The Brunswick Partnership for Housing hopes to help meet those challenges with a fundraising drive to support a recently acquired property in Southport. The property, a house formerly used by Dosher Memorial Hospital for offices at 250 East 11th Street, will be turned into four apartment units as well as office space for the Partnership. Three of the apartment units will be targeted to families with the fourth being a handicapped-accessible unit, according to Rev. Sally Learned, Executive Director and Board Chair of Brunswick Partner-
ship for Housing. “One of the growing groups in our community is homeless hospital discharges,” Learned said. The handicapped-accessible unit will used as shorter term care to get people in that situation stabilized and into a regular shelter, she said. The regular apartment units will also be transitional in nature, but residents
This building at 250 E. 11th St in Southport will become four apartments and offices
will be there for a longer term, from 9-18 months, Learned said. BPH will offer families help as needed with everything from navigation of aid programs to financial planning and budgeting to help them transition into permanent housing of their own. “There will be a lot of supports for them to move into independent living,” Learned said.
This project, and the BPH itself, grew out of the Southport Oak Island Inter-Church Fellowship’s winter sheltering program, said Learned. That program involved local churches finding short-term that would get families off the streets for 5-7 days at a time, which was useful, but didn’t address the problem long term, she said.

Brunswick Partnership for Housing was formed as a corporate entity in late 2019 into early 2020, and began the hunt for a suitable property, eventually finding the 11th Street home and buying it from Dosher Hospital. “The City of Southport worked with us through the Planning Board process and the Board of Adjustments to include Transitional Housing under a conditional use permit. First National Bank approved our financing,” said Learned. “All of this was pulled together during the COVID pandemic.” Churches and the Inter Church Fellowship have already contributed $100,000 to the organization, according to Learned. “We are inviting community members to join them in getting this effort off the ground,” she added. The next step is finding a general contractor for the remodel. Learned said the work will be done by licensed contractors when necessary and volunteers when appropriate. Learned said the homelessness in Brunswick County is the product, in part, of high rents. According to Learned, 32 percent of Brunswick County families spend more than 30 percent of their income on housing, making them fit the definition of housing insecure. “So it just takes one disaster to put someone in a homeless situation,” she said. “We are still helping people from (Hurricanes) Matthew and Florence. People who have a house fire, a lost job, or even a car breakdown can suddenly find themselves homeless.” Learned said homelessness, especial-
ly among families with children, is often hard to see. “Families with children stay under the radar,” she said. There is a stigma associated with homeless, she said, and a fear that county government might take children. Though false, this idea can make it hard for families to seek the help they need. “A lot of times families end up in cars or couch surfing in others’ houses,” she said. “It puts kids in an unstable environment.” In 2018-2019 there were 476 homeless children identified though the Brunswick County school system. “And that didn’t catch them all because the system relies on self-reporting,”Learned said. The Partnership hopes to attract families via referrals from county agencies, she said. The COVID pandemic, and the lost jobs and economic disruptions associated with it, will only make matters worse. “What we are anticipating, looking nationally, is a doubling homeless numbers,” Learned said. Learned invites anyone interested to go to Brunswick Partnership for Housing website at https://www.brunswickpartnership.org/ for more information. Donations can be made directly through the website or an address can found there to mail in support.

Little Libraries
What The Books We Trade Say About Us STORY BY LISA P STITES, PHOTOS BY JEFFREY STITES
I
t seems that more Little Free Libraries are popping up in our communities lately. Maybe you’ve seen the Kiwanis one on Howe Street near Port City Java, or the one in front of the Oak Island Recreation Center. The concept is simple — individuals or groups sponsor a box and anyone is welcome to take a book and asked to return a book. We wanted to write a story about this grassroots community service of sorts, but with a twist. So in December, we took a grand tour of Little Free Libraries, some officially registered and included on the organization’s interactive map (searchable by zip code) and some apparently being independently operated. What we found was a heart-warming snapshot of our local communities and neighborhoods, so come along with us as we discover what’s inside a Little Free Library on any given day. We started out in our hometown and stopped at a library at the Arboretum, on the corner of Oak Island Drive and Middleton Avenue. There’s a lot of foot traffic past this one as people go to and from the beach. There were some heavy hitters from the literary world inside, including Jodi Picoult and Tom Clancy. The box is a pretty blue with happy flowers painted on the side, so it blends in with the surroundings nicely. I planned to find a book - just one - on our tour. The Picoult novel was tempting, since I love her writing, but the plot looked to be a bit more of a downer than I wanted at this time of year, so I refrained. Next it was on to the Oak Island Recreation Center, where we found another box
ies, which is not surprising as often as his name appears on the bestsellers list. Our next stop was a library in a residential neighborhood, on Frying Pan Road. We were so fortunate to meet the Library owners at this location — Francine Manor and Barbara Simmons. These ladies are sisters, both talented artists who sell their
works online and at area open air markets and festivals as The Southport Sisters. They explained that their library was made from an old sewing machine they found at the Habitat for Humanity Restore. They named the Library Irene, after their mother, who was a seamstress. This Library beautifully embraces a nautical

People often bring them books to help stock it, so they get first pick of new titles to read themselves before sending them into circulation. “It’s so well used in this neighborhood,” Francine said. She also said that they get a lot of children’s books, which she donates to Smart Start. “It’s just something nice to do for the neighborhood,” she said. And in the Library, we found a pile of Christmas-themed stories, perfect for the season. Next we were off to Southport. Our
first stop there was at the Ginger Harper Real Estate Group. This Library is outside their office, across the side street from the Maritime Museum. We found a good variety here, including James Patterson again, and something called “The Chocolate Bible.” I am not sure why I didn’t grab that one. This location has the added benefit of being half a block away from the Southport waterfront, where you can grab a chair and sit a spell with a newto-you book. We opted to grab some take-out from Moore Street Market and enjoyed lunch on the benches under the trees in front of the Maritime Museum. On Howe Street near the Port City Java is a Library sponsored by Southport-Oak Island Kiwanis. This Little Free Library had novels (yes, James Patterson again) and nonfiction, including lots of magazines and books on quilting. We headed up to the north end of the County, stopping in Boiling Spring Lakes on the way, since there is a box outside Town Hall. It’s

painted bright green, so it’s pretty easy to spot. On this day, we found more quilting publications and contemporary novels by Patterson, of course, but also David Baldacci and others, as well as some really cute children’s books. In Stoney Creek Plantation, off U.S. 17 in Belville/ Leland, there is an adorable Library that looks like a barn, with red walls and white trim. Not surprisingly, this Library had lots of children’s books, including classics like Nancy Drew and the Little House on the Prairie series. I was so glad to see these, as I enjoyed them in my own childhood. We also stopped by the Leland Cultural Arts Center, with a beautiful Little Free Library, sponsored and decorated by Girl Scout Troop 4257, out front. Jeffrey nabbed a book out of this
interesting. Leland’s Founders Park also has a sharing library, this one the product of an eagle Scout project in 2018, according to its plaque. We’ve loved seeing the pro-
gression of this park as it continues to serve its growing community in new ways. The Library is tucked away by the playground, and there was a selection of holiday-themed books, totally appropriate for the time of year. There was also an installment from Janet Evanovich’s popular Stephanie Plum series, several children’s books and even a local coupon book.
one — a compilation of Joseph Conrad short stories. There was a great assortment of nonfiction, children’s books and fiction (including one by Maeve Binchy and a book of ghost stories). We headed over to the Windsor Park community off U.S. 76 in Leland. This is where I found my book for the day. It’s “The Friday Night Knitting Club,” by Kate Jacobs. I don’t knit, but the story looked

Our final stop for the day was at the Brunswick Riverwalk Park in Belville. This Library is near the playground, and is painted a woodsy brown to blend in with the trees. There was the usual assortment of fiction, and also the most interesting find of the day, a book called “If You Didn’t Bring Jerky, What Did I Just Eat? Misadventures in Hunting, Fishing and the Wilds of Suburbs.” And that’s one the best things about Little Free Libraries. You never know what you’ll find. While we did have a grand tour, we did not see all of the Little Free Libraries in the area. To see all the locations for those officially registered, or to find out how you can start your own Little Free Library, visit littlefreelibrary.org. Little Free Library is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that builds community, inspires readers, and expands book access for all through a global network of volunteer-led little libraries, according to the website. One thing we noticed about all the libraries we visited — they all have lots of selections, including wellknown favorites and plenty of others just waiting to be discovered. I am in that in-between generation. I have the Kindle app on my iPad, and I also love borrowing e-books through the Brunswick County Library system. But I also still love the feeling of holding a book in my hand, and the anticipation of opening it and starting on the first page. We have so many online choices and a great local library system, but these Little Free Libraries nurture the community aspect of reading and sharing good stories with others.

Mermaid On A Mission Saving The World -- One Book At A Time STORY AND PHOTOS BY JEFFREY STITES

o child should grow up without books. As a writer and an avid reader, I can’t even imagine a life without easy access to the written word, to the smell and feel of printed pages, to the escape and education and expanded horizons found in words on paper. Amy Atwell, owner of The Painted Mermaid in Southport and a dedicated reader and writer herself, is on a mission to make books available to as many children as possible. We spoke to her about her project and the help she’s going to need from her community to make it a reality. Can you outline your idea and how it came to you?
I spent a lot of time during the shelter-at-home talking “solutions to all the world’s problems” over the phone with a friend who offered some interesting perspectives to many of the social dilemmas at hand. One of the many points that came up were the “luxuries” often

afforded to children which many may take for granted - summer camp, after school activities (scouts, etc) - and that NOT having those things can potentially put a child without them behind from a social and/or exposure standpoint when they return to school each year. At some point, the conversation turned

from there.
The next day or so, the seed was reinforced by a shopper/friend who volunteers with the library. She told me a story about how immediately attached some of the children became to books they had received as gifts, and the fact that for many it was the first they had ever owned. Some of those children were in the third grade. She was the one who suggested the Little Free Libraries specifically for children. The idea took hold
I think there are times those of us blessed with plenty can be blissfully unaware of the struggles felt by those around us. Opportunities to help become readily available at Christmas for example, and sometimes slip a bit by the wayside the rest of the year. The idea that a parent could stop and pick a book to keep, ANY time, without concern for having to come up with extra money, just seems like a great thing to make available, especially now. And be-

How far out in the county are you looking to go?
I would love for this idea to go anywhere and everywhere anyone would like to take it. I can’t even imagine how fabulous it would be to know that they were ALL over the country, the care and love being spread by those made aware from visiting here or seeing online. All it takes is one person being willing to place a waterproof container in their yard or outside of their business with a sign explaining to take what you need, leave what you don’t. It boggles the mind, the potential from growth from there.
Can you speak to why reading is close to your heart? How has it changed your life? What can it do for others?
I love to read, and for that matter, write. Having been read to as a child, and later spending time with books as a teen has contributed to ALL of that having come more easily as a student. At the same time, reading bedtime stories with and to my little guy is the absolute best end to each day. The idea of paying that forward to even just one parent or child is both humbling and at the risk of sounding dramatic, life giving.
How many people are involved in this project?
Many folks have brought so many WONDERFUL books! Carol Pearson of “10 Little Rules” has been a great support with promoting the concept, helping with fliers, etc. Friends of the library has offered support and of course being featured here is such a gift from Southport Magazine! Others have offered to help with painting little libraries once they are built, so I’m hoping the numbers will grow as we find folks able to up-cycle or build, and I in particular gain a better hold on how to guide folks through doing some of this on their own in their own neighborhoods or communities.
be excited to build at least one. The idea is not for just me to build them or it to be something for which The Painted Mermaid be praised, but rather a project through which we as a COMMUNITY can all come together to help little people and their parents that may be experiencing hard times get a leg up in this world.
Where can people bring books? What sorts of books are you looking for?
Folks can donate new or gently used books of all genres appropriate for pre-k to young teen by bringing them to The Painted Mermaid located at 817 N Howe St. here in Southport. The metal cabinets out front are for anyone to take what they need and/or leave what they don’t - the spin here is that NO ONE should feel OBLIGATED to leave anything.
What has been the response from potential locations for the libraries?
We’ve had a few on the fence, but no takers as of yet. I suspect folks are hesitant to “take on something else,” when really, the libraries should essentially take care of themselves. Those who make the commitment but don’t want or feel qualified to build or maintain them will be asked to contact me should they get low on offerings or need some maintenance. Outside of that, I like to think each box will have as many donors as takers. Any placement would be welcomed. It is my hope that locations will grow to include food banks, United Way offices, churches, WIC or parole offices, and the health department.
LOVE YOUR SMILE “Professional and friendly, as usual! All COVID-related protocols in place. Felt safe and secure.”- Rochelle
What is your goal for this project in 2021?
It’s one day at a time these days. And as much as I’d like to set some crazy goal of a thousand libraries, I feel like getting started, spreading the word and gaining consistent growth through not only the addition of libraries, but consistent PARTICIPATION from parents and kids at those which do get placed is a great start. The rest will come as the time is right.

What help do you need?
Folks can help with so many things - distributing fliers, donating books to the cabinet up front, etc. The biggest need currently is finding folks to build/donate the libraries, followed closely by finding places willing to place them at their businesses, offices, or neighborhood clubhouses. It is my hope that now that we are through the holidays, and word is starting to spread, anyone looking for a rewarding hobby will

If you have some time on your hands and are a bit handy, our community’s children could use your help. Stop by The Painted Mermaid, 817 N. Howe St. in Southport, and talk to Amy Atwell. The store is open Friday, Saturday and Sunday 11 am - 4 pm, if you’d like to go see what’s available. The easiest way to contact Atwell directly is at (704) 203-5830 or through a message on The Painted Mermaid Facebook page. Share your ideas. Brainstorm. And help change the world— one book at a time.

ooking to help out by building a Little Free Library? You’ll see many examples in Lisa’s story on page ##, but aside from a few basics, your imagination is the only limit. Atwell says while she can’t donate all the materials for every library built from her shop, The Painted Mermaid, she does have materials that could help builders complete project. Finished libraries and kits are available at LittleFreeLibraries.org, and that is also a good place to start when looking at what one should look like. The Painted Mermaid’s Pinterest page also has a “Change The world With A Book” board with ideas. One necessity that Atwell pointed out is a sloped or peaked roof to keep water from building up and leaking into the library. Shelves are a plus they allow the library to hold more books. Many
libraries have windows that show off their contents, and Atwell has some windows at the shop that cold be re-purposed, but these are not required. The library itself could be built from scratch, but Atwell has several items, from a trunk to metal cabinet, she said would make great libraries with a little imagination. Atwell said she is all able to help with some reclaimed wood in the shop.

Kiwanis Story Time Reading Program Moves To YouTube STORY BY LISA P. STITES
R
eading is an important part of a child’s education, whether children are attending school in person or virtually. In an effort to keep children interested in books, the Southport-Oak Island Kiwanis created a program called Royal Readers, in which volunteers meet with first graders at Southport, Bolivia and Virginia Williamson Elementary Schools and let the students read to them. In order to keep their volunteer reading programs up and running during the COVID pandemic, the group has turned to YouTube.
“We reward first grade children for reading books by sponsoring an ice cream social at the end of the school year and we provide an adult to listen to them read throughout the school year when they need additional help or just don’t have someone at home who can take the time to listen,” said Joe Crostic, local Kiwanis member and Governor-elect of Carolinas District of Kiwanis International. Volunteers also read to pre-school children in the community. While neither of those has been possible during the pandemic, the Kiwanis created a Reading Korner, a series of reading videos on YouTube. Volunteers – mostly members and a few area emergency services figures – read books, and children everywhere can access them anytime. “When the pandemic hit and we
could no longer be in the schools to read, or be read to, we decided to try the video approach and meld our two programs into one for the time being,” Crostic said. “In our Reading Korner videos, we show the reader of the book while reading and we show a picture of the page being read so older children can read along and the younger children can see the illustrations. Some of our readers ad lib while reading to encourage the younger children to count along or identify animals which are pictured. In some of those instances we also have added pop-up arrows and numbers in the videos to make it easier for the child to identify what is being highlighted by the reader.” Taking the reading programs online was also a way to keep Kiwanis members active in community service

during the pandemic. Typically, people join Kiwanis to have an opportunity to serve children in the community, Crostic explained. A core fundamental purpose of Kiwanis is dedication to improving the world one child and one community at a time. “We believe that reading is fundamental to allowing children to learn all of their curriculum and to succeed
in life generally,” Crostic said. “Our experience with schools has shown that our reading programs are successful in improving the quality of reading by the children and has helped to encourage children to have a love of books and reading. When we work in the schools during ‘normal times,’ our members often establish effective one-to-one rela-

Those relationships are often appreciated by the children, and our members have even gotten hugs while shopping at Walmart or other stores from students who proudly introduce the Kiwanis member to their parents as the one who helps
them read at school. When reading at preschools, hugs from the children are common as our members arrive and leave the classrooms.” So far, members have created more than 60 videos, including 16 holiday and winter-themed selections. A few well-known law enforcement officers and firefighters have also taken a turn; Brunswick Sheriff John Ingram, Southport Police Chief Todd Coring, Southport Fire Chief Charles Drew and
members of the Boiling Spring Lakes Fire Rescue have recordings. In fact, Chief Drew’s reading of “Sparky the Fire Dog” has more than 400 views. Crostic said the group hasn’t yet decided if reading online will continue after the pandemic, but for now, they’ll keep producing videos for their YouTube Channel, http://bit.ly/ SOKIKiwanis. Knowing that children from anywhere, not just our community, can watch the videos will be a factor in how they decide to move forward, he said. When Royal readers were in the classrooms with students, Crostic himself also volunteered. He read “Curious George Goes to School,” “The Rabbit Who Wanted Red Wings” and “It’s Not Easy Being a Bunny,” all of which he said were favorites of his own children when they were young. “We let the children choose the books from the many titles which are available in their classrooms, so our members have heard all kinds of books being read,” Crostic said.
“The rewarding feature for all of our members is when we see improvement in the reading skill and comprehension of the students over the course of the year we work with them. The hugs are pretty rewarding as well!” In November, Crostic recorded a book reading with his 5-year old granddaughter, “A Very Merry Christmas,” which he said was really fun to do. “Many of our members selected books which had special meaning to them either as the books related to memories of reading to their own children or the deeper messages contained in the books, such as “The Giving Tree” and “Stranger in the Woods,” he said. The civic group has many more programs of service to the community, such as Builders Clubs, Key Clubs and the Terrific Kids within the schools. The group also participates in programs with the Boys and Girls Home, scholarships and many more community programs, including Big

Capturing Happiness Local Photogrpaher Loves Where She Lives STORY BY JEFFREY STITES
R
ight after Hurricane Isaias hit Oak Island I was not feeling very hopeful. Walking around the island and seeing the destruction nature had visited upon us, piled on top of living through a pandemic since spring, had me in a bit of a foul humor. Then I ran across the most amazing photograph on Facebook. It was a rainbow coming from the Heavens and landing right on our little damaged island. The Biblical symbolism was strong. I saw it as a promise that we’d be ok after all. It was just wha I need just when I needed it and I decided to contact the photographer, Katie Dorset, and ask if we could use her photo on Southport Magazine’s cover and she readily agreed. Turns out she’s just made the decision to take her photography business full time and was happy for the exposure. Since then Katie D Photography has appeared at farmers and craft markets and even outside Haag Seafood with photos in all formats, from large art prints to small refrigerator magnets. Katie was capturing memories for families escaping the stress of our times with a beach vacation and couples getting engaged. Oh, and Katie got married herself! We spoke to Katie about her business, her history as a photographer and how she’s managing a start-up in the Time of COVID.
What is your history as a photographer?
I got my first “big girl” camera about 10 years ago when I became a stepmom to a few very active kids. I wanted to capture our family memories and all the ac-

tivities they participated in. Given my personality, I soon was taking all of the team photos for the kids’ sports they participated in, and it just grew from there. I began taking family photos for friends and family and got hooked. It wasn’t until I moved to Oak Island in 2019 that I really learned my love of Nature Photography.
When did you begin using a camera?
I received an “old” Sears film camera from my uncle when I was about 15. When I say “old,” I mean “older than me” :)
Do you have formal training?
Yes, but informal structure. I have taken courses and classes from several different avenues anywhere from New York Institute
of Photography (a great online program), Randolph Community College (one of the best if not the best photography school on the east coast), to YouTube videos and several other photography programs/classes.
How long have you lived on Oak Island?
I came to Oak Island the summer of 2019.
What drew you here?
I had never been to Oak Island until 2016 when I visited for vacation with family. It didn’t take long for me to fall in love with this little piece of paradise. I love the small-town feel, and of course how dog-friendly Oak Island is.
When did you launch Katie D Photography?
I launched my Photography business in 2012.
When did you dive into it as a fulltime job?
I officially became full time in the fall of 2020. I had always worked a full-time job in addition to doing photography, and the summer of 2020 was so busy for me as a photographer, I was able to leave my full-time job (at Ruby’s Coffeehouse & Eatery on Oak Island-Y’all go! It’s a great little cafe at the OKI Pier!) and go full time with photography.

What does Katie D photography offer? Katie D Photography offers full “people” photography. I love working with locals and with tourists to give them memories they will cherish forever. Also, I have a large collection of OKI/Southport images which I have put onto canvas, prints, and pretty much anything you like. I like working with homeowners on selecting images that go with their decor. Lastly, I love offering true OKI/Southport souvenirs, such as magnets, key chains, coffee mugs, post cards, etc.
What moved you to take the business full time? I want to give my photography clients more of my time. Yes, I take their photos the day of our session, but I want to be available for any questions/needs they have. Because 90 percent of my clients are not from here, I love to help them with any issues they may have while here that their rental cannot help with. Also, when someone books a session with me, I am now able to secure two dates for their session in case of bad weather one day. When people come for only a week, you have to make sure they get it all in.
You made this move in 2020, in the middle of the COVID pandemic and all the upheaval surrounding that, which was brave. What have been
your biggest challenges and how have you overcome them? Luckily, once vacations began back up in May, my family photography flourished. We can social distance easily during sessions. I had a few weddings cancel, but I only do small weddings, so it wasn’t a lot for me.
What lessons have you learned so far, about photography and entrepreneurship? Oh my! That would be a whole book! I guess the easiest way I can put it is, and for both, “99 percent of it all is just showing up.” I heard that quote somewhere about photography and it is so true in both photography and entrepreneurship. If you don’t show up, you’re not going to work.
You also got married last year — congratulations! You made the most of 2020 Can you speak to that, to your attitude about the year and life moving forward? I refuse to live in fear. I have continued my wonderful life while attempting to stay healthy for whatever may come my way. There is joy in every day living and I plan to continue to celebrate that every day going forward. My company motto is “Celebrate Life” and I just want to help others do that while I capture that for them.
Do you find common ground with clients going ahead with positive life milestones, with people celebrating what they have?
Yes!!! People are celebrating many things when we shoot — from just a vacation, to proposals! Katie D Photography celebrates all of those moments-no matter how “little” they may seem.
Speaking of moving forward, what are your plans for the future of Katie D photography?
have space for traveling photographers to work while visiting our wonderful area. (Wow! That’s the first time I’ve put that “dream” down in writing”).
How can people find you and your work or find out more about your family photography offerings?
I am currently on Facebook and Instagram as Katie D Photography. I also have a website at https://KatieDPhoto.mypixieset.com/
Katie D plans to continue to celebrate every day life by way of capturing families on vacations. In addition, I have a dream of opening a Photography Gallery in Oak Island to showcase local photographers and

Brunswick Civil War Roundtable Hosts Another Virtual Zoom Meeting In February
T
he February meeting of the Brunswick Civil War Round Table examines the lives and experiences of Union General Franz Sigel and Confederate General John C. Breckinridge. The presentation focuses on how their leadership styles and decisions changed history on a rainy afternoon near the crossroads town of New Market, Virginia on May 15, 1864. The guest presenter is Sarah Kay Bierle, an author, speaker and researcher whose career is dedicated to major events and turning points in the American Civil War. The meeting begins at 7 pm on Tuesday, Feb 2 via Zoom, and all members are invited to attend. Not a member? Email Brunswickcwrt@gmail.com to join prior to the meeting. Annual membership dues are $25.
The Battle of New Market was fought on May 15, 1864, in Virginia during the Valley Campaign of 1864. A makeshift Confederate army of 4,100 men led by Confederate General Breckinridge, which included ca-

He joined the Confederacy at the start of the Civil War, and served as brigade commander at the Battle of Shiloh. Promoted to Major General in 1862, he fought in numerous noteworthy battles, including New Market and Cold Harbor, before serving as the final Confederate Secretary of

COMMUNITY War in 1865. On the losing side, Franz Sigel was an intriguing historical figure. In losing the Battle of New Market, he failed to provide a campaign victory General Ulysses S. Grant wanted in the Shenandoah Valley. Sigel was a fantastic organizer, loyal to his friends, valued education, understood the value of image and influence, and loved the ideals of freedom and liberty. Yet he struggled with leadership, which hampered his military career. His two great blunders in the New Market Campaign were the loss of confidence from his regimental commanders, and piece-mealing his army into the battle. His commanders did not fully trust him or understand his orders, sometimes even speaking to his troops in German when frustrated on the battlefield. The end result at New Market, two generals, two different lifestyles, and one conclusion, a victory for the South. Run Oak Island
Volunteers Will Help Fund Parks Projects STORY BY JEFFREY STITES
Looking to get out of the house for a bit, be an ambassador for your town, and help raise some funds for Oak Island’s parks? Run Oak Island 2021 and the Oak Island Friends of Parks Foundation are teaming up once again to give you the chance. Coastal Race Productions is bringing half and full marathon races to the island on Saturday, Feb. 13 and is looking for volunteers to assist at the start and finish lines, aid in parking, direct runners and cheer the racers on. Coastal race Productions will donate $25 for each volunteer to the Oak Island Friends of Parks Foundation. This year’s races have been pared down to 1,500 runners and will feature rolling starts to provide for social distancing, said Rebecca Squires, Director of Oak Island’s Recreation Department. Both races start and end at Middleton Park.
“The Friends of Parks Foundation was founded to support Oak Island parks and make sure they continue to meet the need of our fast-growing Town,” said Squires. “The Foundation also funds special projects that the normal Town budgets cannot, and assists donors who would like to fund a special project, such as a park bench. The Foundation is a 501 c(3), and is separate from the Town.” Projects the Foundation is pursuing now include a Made In The Shade project to provide a shade structure at the town’s splash pad, a water fountain for people and pets at Veterans
Park, new beach wheelchairs, and the replacement of aging benches and picnic tables at parks throughout the town, said Squires. To sign up, call the Oak Island Rec-
reation Center at (910) 278-5518 or visit http://bit.ly/OakIslandBAMVolunteer2021. Volunteers will receive a free race t-shirt.

Texas To The Beach
Sculptor Finds Inspiration Everywhere STORY BY CARLA EDSTROM
W
ith an admiration for the Western United States, bronze sculpture artist Todd “Tex” Mueller carves out his 3-D pieces with precise, photo-like accuracy. His sculptures capture minute details, highlight personality, and often elicit emotion. After 30 years working as a Computer Artist and Illustrator while living in Denver and Texas, he has brought his love of art and sculpture, and his remarkable talents, to Southeastern North Carolina. Capturing roaming bison and long horn cattle, floating octopuses and Blackbeard, Mueller is now a full-time sculptor. “I love the history of the old west and consider myself a western artist,” said Mueller. “Lately, Southport’s history is captivating me, and the nautical aspects of this area are totally inspiring me,” he said. Mueller was always an artist and grew a special admiration for life in the Lone Star State. “I was always good at art, and after high school I went to the Colorado Institute of Art to get a degree
in Commercial Arts. I worked in a T-shirt shop in Denver for about a year, and then went into television at CBS KMGHTV 7 as an Illustrator. The company I worked for grew and grew, and 12 years

ago, they moved me into the Dallas, Texas office as a Computer Artist. Using the computer this whole time I was missing the beauty of traditional art. So I picked up some wire and clay and started sculpting. I was hooked from day one,” he said. Amazingly, he is mostly self-taught in sculpture by going online and watching tutorials. His sculptures of long horn steer capture the immense strength and fierce nature of the beast. “I have alway enjoyed photorealism and strive for that style. However, I’ve learned
late in my career that an artist can do what a camera cannot and that is very exciting to me,” he said. “I like all kinds of stories and stories inspire me and help to drive my work. I never have any trouble coming up with my next idea or sculpt because of the stories I hear dayto-day. Recently I’ve been working on a Blackbeard bust hearing great pirate stories from the Wilmington area and I have been motivated by those tales both being true and not-so-true.” Remington and Charles Russell are Mueller’s favorite artists for both their

sculpting and painting. “It also helps that they were both western artists and lived in the 1860s,” he said. “Both loved movement in their art pieces and you can see it in their work for example with horses running with just one foot on the ground, airborne but still connected to the base. Love that!” Mueller enjoys creating both computer art and sculpting, and is kept busy making them both and thinks that both together is a good mix. “They do not really work together as my sculpting seems to be in the fine art area and my computer work is more in the commercial art area,” said Mueller. “I like doing both and together, I think it’s a good mix,” he said. “I still like making art on the computer as a commercial artist and
animator. I could always see things in 3D and was a 3D computer artist all of my television career. It was a perfect fit for me moving into the fine art sculpture business.” After Mueller creates a clay sculpture, the piece goes to a foundry where it goes through the lost-wax process to make the bronze. “Unfortunately, I’ve picked an expensive art field to create in. Bronze sculpture is not cheap, and I have to create a sculpture, cast it in bronze and market it before I see any fruits from my labors. A good foundry can also take up to six months to create your sculpture in bronze which means nothing happens fast. Also at that point my original clay sculpture is destroyed to make the cast to create the bronze. It’s all very final.”

Mueller now resides in Boiling Spring Lakes. “I’m changing over to more of a nautical theme these days instead of the Western theme, as the Western theme doesn’t mean the same thing out here on the East Coast,” he said. “I’m enjoying the new flavors of the East Coast, the Atlantic Sea and all of the possibilities it provides. I have recently taken a truck load of natural themed clays back to the foundry I use, and hope to get the bronzes out to the different galleries by this spring.” You can see more of Mueller’s work at www.texasmadesculptures.com, or on his Facebook page at Texas Made Sculptures. Teacher of the Year South Brunswick High School Social Studies Educator Honored Regionally STORY BY JEFFREY STITES, PHOTO CONTRIBUTED
D
uring a year that has been particularly difficult for teachers, students and parents, South Brunswick High School has reason to celebrate. Jennie Bryan, currently teaching AP US History and World History at South, was named Southeast Regional Teacher of the Year and is now a finalist for North Carolina Teacher of the Year. Bryan, in her seventh year teaching at SBHS, said the honor gave her a personal boost just when she needed it. “Even though the surprise announcement was much smaller than it would have been in a normal year, it was so meaningful that not just my husband and daughter were there, but my grandparents and parents were secretly invited to attend as well. When I walked in the Media Center, I saw my mom had her phone up so I assumed she was just filming it all, but turns out she had my siblings, aunts, and some cousins all on FaceTime watching. I’m very close with my family,
so that was just extra special for them all to “be there” experiencing the announcement with me. The judges then all had kind and gracious words to share about my interviews and the interviews they completed with my colleagues, administrators, parents and students. I will definitely say that this experience has energized me in a year that might have otherwise felt very draining,” she said.
Chip Hodges, South Brunswick High School Principal, said he is proud of Bryan. “Ms. Bryan is very good at what she does. She is 100 percent committed to her students and to the learning process within her classroom. She goes above and beyond to meet the needs of her students. In addition, to her teaching, Ms. Bryan is a strong advocate for SBHS, Brunswick County Schools, and public education in North Carolina. Her involvement on our School Improvement Team, being the Teacher of the Year representative for our teachers with the Superintendent and Board of Education, and representing our region as the Regional Teacher of the Year are all activities that Ms. Bryan embraces and activities in which she shines,” he said. Bryan was first named district teacher of the year and then regional teacher of the year, but she isn’t finished yet. “I am now one of nine finalists for the 2021 North Carolina teacher of the year,” Bryan said. “The final interviews are held on Friday, February 19 at the Umstead Hotel in Cary. From what I understand, it will be an all-day affair where I will learn more about the expectations, opportunities, and experiences of a state teacher of the year. The 2021 NC Teacher of the Year will
42 Southport Magazine /February /February 2021 / www.SouthportMag.com
serve as the team leader of the other regional teachers of the year, so even if I am not selected as the state teacher of the year, I know I’ll be busy working with this team of outstanding educators all next year to advocate for NC public school students and teachers... and that’s exciting!” Brunswick County Schools also involves its Teachers of the Year in planning and decision-making, Bryan said. “In many districts across the state the recognition itself is all there is to it. However, in Brunswick County Schools, teachers of the year from all schools in the district serve together on the Teacher’s Advisory Council, which meets once a month with Superintendent Dr. Oates and his cabinet to have student centered, teacher driven conversations about the work taking place in our schools. As the district teacher of the year I have the responsibility of chairing this committee. We do spend a lot of time talking about COVID-related concerns, but we are also really examining what we can be doing to better serve our students social and emotional learning needs. In addition to that, I have the opportunity to make a presentation to the school board at each of the monthly meetings about some of the impressive work students and teachers are accomplishing in the county. In short, the Brunswick County Teacher of the Year Program has provided me with valuable leadership experiences and insights over this
past year and in doing so demonstrates a commitment to teacher voice. I look forward to taking what I have learned to the regional and state level and hope that BCS’s TOY program will soon be replicated by districts across the state,” she said. Bryan recognizes the challenges faced by students, teachers and families during the pandemic. “Seeing students struggle the way they have this past year has been incredibly difficult,” she said. “It’s not unique to schools in Brunswick County or North Carolina that students who have traditionally flourished in the classroom have had an extremely difficult time staying motivated and engaged with remote learning. Some students are not just struggling academically, but emotionally as well - and of course those two are very much related to one another. I have been more mindful this year than ever before about checking in on the social-emotional well being of my students. I do a lot of quick surveys about their stress level and what things are going on in their lives that are ‘filling their buckets’ and ‘emptying their buckets.’ I spend as much time as I can reaching out to students and parents to have moments of genuine connection to let students know that I am here for them, that I believe in them, and that they are capable of getting to the other side of this moment in history.” Bryan also has a message for students as they navigate these times, “Your

Community Bryan said she truly enjoys her career as an educator. “There is never a dull moment, I really like my coworkers and administrators, and there is always more to learn, but at the end of the day, the best thing is getting to help students develop into informed and engaged citizens,” she said. “I’ve had students asked to speak to local history organizations about their research, students I’ve run into when they are voting for the first time, and students to simply make connections from the past to the present that they may not have otherwise. Anytime anything like that happens, it’s a great day to be a history educator.”
high school career has dealt you some seemingly unfair blows. From Florence to Isaias and of course COVID. I admire your resilience, your grit, and your perseverance. If you feel like your tank is starting to run empty on those things, please reach out to your teachers and let them know. If you have fallen behind, ask your teachers to help you prioritize assignments to complete. Don’t look back at regrets on last semester and worry over that right now. Focus on your tasks at hand. Take things one day at a time, one Zoom meeting at a time, one assignment at a time.” There are also challenges not related to the COVID outbreak, Bryan added. “Growing up, there were a lot of people who told me to not pursue a career in education. There was a time someone actually said to me that I was too smart to be a teacher and that I should be a lawyer or a doctor. Thinking about that comment still makes my blood boil and eyes roll, but I understand that is simply one indication of the gross disrespect many people in
our society feel towards educators. And as a result of this attitude, we not only have a morale problem among educators in North Carolina, but a pipeline problem. We are seeing an overall decreased number of students graduating from teacher prep programs and that
really scares me. I want my daughter to have a highly qualified teacher in every single one of her classes as she goes through school, and right now, that isn’t a guarantee for many students in classrooms across the state of North Carolina,” she said.
“My life has been greatly enriched for pursuing a career in education,” Bryan said. “There have been really hard days and hard years, but what career doesn’t have its challenges? So students - if you want to be an educator? Go for it! We need you! I’ll never tell you to pursue something else instead. I look forward to having you as a colleague!”

FITNESS
A Strong Heart
Total Personal Health Depends On It STORY BY BRIAN TULLY, MS
I
am sure you have heard the phrase “they have a good heart.” This is usually a reference to an individual’s level of caring, kindness, and overall loving nature, and has nothing to do with the health of the actual heart muscle itself. Yes, the heart is a muscle. A very important one, that we need to take good care of so we are able to provide care and kindness to our loved ones for many years.
You may be asking yourself “how do I know if I have a strong heart?” The following are ways for you to self-check. Of course, checking with your doctor will be the most accurate, but the ability to maintain a level of self-awareness about your own health goes a long way. Heart Rate – a high resting heart rate could mean that your heart is working harder than it needs to be; a strong heart has to pump less often at rest — it is more efficient. You only need a couple of fingers and a timer with a second counter to check your heart rate. Place your index and middle finger on your opposite wrist just below and in line with the edge of your thumb. Once you feel the pulse, count the beats for 15 seconds and then multiply by 4 to get your heart rate. A normal resting heart rate for adults is between 60 to 100 beats per minute. Usually, the lower the resting rate in that range the better — it means the heart is functioning more efficiently, a sign of good cardiovascular fitness.
Blood Pressure – a doctor visit will almost always start with a blood pressure check, it is a good indicator of what is going on with the circulatory system. But you don’t have to wait for a doctor visit to keep a check on these numbers. You can purchase an automatic blood pressure cuff at a reasonable price, allowing you to keep an eye on the numbers between visits to the doctor. High blood pressure can inhibit blood flow to the heart, making the heart muscle weaker over time. One reading is not an accurate measure of high blood pressure, since your pressure can be impacted by a lot of things in that given moment. Taking it at different times while at rest will give you a more accurate understanding of your true numbers. Shortness of Breath – when performing a physical activity, if you quickly become short of breath, it may be because your heart is having trouble keeping up. Movement requires fuel and oxygen be transported to the mus-

cles (including the heart muscle) via the bloodstream. If this oxygen and fuel can’t get distributed quickly enough to keep up with the activity, you will feel short of breath quicker than expected. It may be a sign of a weak heart. As I mentioned earlier, the heart is actually a muscle, which means you can make it stronger. This is great news, because a strong heart equals improved health and longevity. So, let’s look at
some ways we can help you make your heart stronger starting today. 1. Exercise and Move Regularly – the American Heart Association (AHA) recommends a minimum of 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercise spread out over three to five days per week. The activity itself isn’t as important as doing it at an intensity to help strengthen the heart. You want to be able to feel exertion but still be able to speak to someone next to you; winded but not unable to speak. The AHA also recommends two days of strength training each week. You should also continue to move throughout the day, not just during your workouts. Movement is life. 2. Quit Smoking – smoking is a major contributor to heart disease, causing damage to the blood vessels supplying the heart with oxygen. 3. Lose the Extra Weight – the extra weight causes strain on the heart,

inhibiting movement and leading to metabolic conditions such as high blood pressure. 4. Eat Healthier – this will not only help with energy for exercise and weight management; but eating healthy fats can also help to lower cholesterol to clear a pathway for the heart to work more smoothly. 5. Lower Stress – when you are stressed, your body releases hormones that increase blood pressure and heart rate, which can cause damage to artery walls and increase risk of blood clots. Lowering stress levels with laughter, deep breathing, or other form of relaxation that you enjoy will decrease these stress hormones, reduce inflammation in the arteries, and decrease blood pressure. Remember the heart is a muscle and exercise will help it to stay strong and work at its best. The phrase “use it or lose it” definitely applies here. If you aren’t already exercising, be
sure to start slowly and safely. If done correctly, you have nothing to worry about. It truly is never too late to start and have a positive effect on your quality of life. If you have any questions or other thoughts to share, I would love to hear from you! Brian@BetterTogetherFitness.com BetterTogetherFitness.com
