LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
Philip and Jennifer Barnett
I remember as a kid, decorating paper bags with hearts and doilies so that my classmates could put in little cards, expressing different sentiments of friendship, during school. Those little cards were called Valentines. As we got older we would send candy and flowers to each other during class to make a bigger statement. The most popular girls in school were the ones
walking around with huge bouquets of flowers. I was always jealous because they had a Valentine. Then years later, I had a boyfriend and I became a Valentine! What is a Valentine exactly? It is a very versatile word; you can be one, give one, and send one. Despite it’s violent history, when we hear the word Valentine we think cupids, hearts, flowers, red and pink, wine and roses; love. The word Valentine is as subjective as the word Love. We asked our readers, what is love? We received many different answers. You can see them scattered throughout the pages of this issue. All of them have one common theme- sacrifice; a willingness to give up your time, your space, your comfort, even your belongings for the sake of someone else. Whether this someone is a loved one, neighbor, friend or even a complete stranger on the opposite side of the world! It’s no wonder everyone wants to hear those three words – Be my Valentine! I think it is safe to assume that the couples we have spotlighted in this month’s issue are done searching for
their Valentine. We are so fortunate to share their stories with you this month. I hope you will see that although their journeys have them on different paths, they all share a common theme, Love. Whether they have been married 4 or 40 years they serve as great examples of patience and sacrifice. We also want to thank the readers who sent in their love stories. It is inspiring to hear them and an honor to share them. Thank you for showing us that Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be limited to just one day. Keep sharing the love! In closing I just want to share one of my favorite quotes about love – “It’s impossible,” said pride. “It’s risky,” said experience. “It’s pointless,” said reason. “Give it a try,” whispered the heart. - William Arthur Ward

Zach & Kim:NEWLYWEDS HOW & WHEN DID YOU MEET?
KIM: Our mutual friend, Ashley Baxter, had a “Bon Voyage PPD” soiree. I overheard Zach filling “Papa Baxter” in on the details of his recent cross county dirt bike trip and was very intrigued. I mean, what kind of person drops everything and rides a dirt bike 4,600 miles across the country?! Thanks to Zach’s sister, Lizzy, who heard through the grapevine that we’d met, Zach was easily convinced that a first date was in order. Two days later, we started to get to know one another over two of our favorite things- pizza and craft beer! ZACH: We met on November 7th, 2012. A mutual friend was having a company farewell party at Satellite Bar and Lounge in Wilmington. I had just gotten back from a 45 day cross-country dirt bike trip (Trans-American Trail) and apparently Kim wanted to meet this “exciting, outdoorsy, totally tan guy”. It apparently takes 45 constant days of sun for me to tan, but she
6 Southport Magazine / February 2016 / www.SouthportMag.com
learned that the hard way! We talked to each other for at least an hour, quickly ignoring most of our friends in the building.
together, it was her incredible compassion for others and completely ridiculous love for me (who could blame her).
LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT?
SAME RELIGIOUS BELIEFS?
KIM: Of course! Who wouldn’t fall in love with an adventurous; thrill seeking, cross-country traveling dirt biker? ZACH: I’m not sure either of us was looking for ‘love at first sight’ at the time, but we both could tell that there was need for a first date before the clock struck 12.
FAVORITE THING ABOUT EACH OTHER?
KIM: From the moment we met, I have loved his laugh and genuine smile. He has the biggest heart of anyone I’ve ever known and he makes me want to be a better person everyday. He is constantly teaching me how to “not sweat the small stuff”. ZACH: At first it was her eyes that drew me in and kept me staring, but as we grew
KIM: Yes, we both attended Port City Community Church in Wilmington and are now attending Hope Community Church in Raleigh. ZACH: We both attended Port City Community Church long before knowing each other...lord knows how many times we walked past each other!!
WHERE DID YOU GROW UP?
KIM: Brunswick County born and raised! I lived on Oak Island as a small child and then moved “out to the country” to Bolivia, when I was eight. ZACH: I have spent most of my life in New Bern, NC. I would consider our old house that overlooked the Neuse River as the place a truly grew up.
A LOVE STORY: ZACH & KIM SIRKIN
FIRST MARRIAGE?
KIM: Yep! ZACH: First and Only!
KIDS? (DO YOU WANT THEM OR DID YOU ALREADY HAVE THEM?)
KIM: We have talked about having kids and maybe even adopting, but not for several more years. For now, we have three furry kids; Jonah, Jenny, and Daisy ZACH: We both love kids, and maybe one day will make a real decision on the topic, but for now 3 drooling dogs are enough!
BEST PART OF BEING MARRIED?
KIM: Not having to take out the trash! But seriously, even better than that, is having someone to make dinner with, binge Netflix next to on the couch, and travel the world by my side. ZACH: I would have to say that the best part is learning from each other to become a better person. We call each other out when we slip up and it’s a reality check people need. It’s like having a mirror in front of yourself everyday and the person reflects back to you the good, bad and the ugly. It makes you strive to be a better person out of the love you have and want to reflect to one another. Now that I think about it, I like my first answer more.
BIGGEST CHALLENGE MARRIAGE?
KIM: In our first two months of marriage, we bought and moved into a new house, spent two weeks in Guatemala, and then spent five days in the UNC Burn Unit after Zach had an accident. To say life was somewhat stressful at times is a total understatement. Learning how to deal with situations that were very hard- togetherwas lesson we had to learn right away. ZACH: When we DO call each other out, knowing to not be too abrasive is important. The biggest challenge is, same as I feel with most people, being respectful of each other’s ideas, wants, and needs.
WORDS OF ADVICE FOR MARRIED COUPLES?
KIM: Practice selflessness for each other. Put each other first, even when you don’t
feel like it. Never forget the reasons you fell in love with one another. ALWAYS, kiss each other goodbye in the morning and hello in the afternoon! ZACH: My advice to others would be the same thing I am always working on: Stop interrupting each other and just listen to your spouse.
WHAT MADE YOU FALL IN LOVE?
KIM: When we first started dating, we saw a gentleman in a parking lot that couldn’t get his motorcycle to crank. Zach took the time to help this total stranger, solely out of the goodness of his heart. Right then, I knew he was the one for me. ZACH: My wife is an incredible woman. She is strong, selfless, and kind. Honestly, between her beautiful eyes, thoughtfulness towards me, and her dog that absolutely adores me, I couldn’t resist! www.SouthportMag.com / February 2016 / Southport Magazine 7

EMILY:I grew up all over the East due to my parents’ jobs. I was born in New Jersey, moved to Pennsylvania, Indiana, Michigan, Georgia, Alabama, Florida, North Carolina- then I went out west (Washington State and California) till meeting Derek in Indiana and moving to New Jersey then here to North Carolina. My short answer is- Georgia: its where my alma mater is. DEREK: I grew up in a small town called Warsaw.

BEST PART OF BEING MARRIED?
EMILY: Having someone to share moments with. Good and bad, but especially the good. For example, when you lose your grip on something in the kitchen and it falls out of your hand but you do a kick, twist, scream, knock and you catch it and regain balance- being able to look up and saying “Woah, did you see that?!” and having your best friend/husband say “YES! That. Was. AWESOME!” or when your first born walks for the first time. It’s cool to be able to experience and share moments with. DEREK: Spending every night with my best friend.
BIGGEST CHALLENGE OF BEING MARRIED?
EMILY: Living selflessly and with the other in mind in all aspects of life or rather trying to DEREK: Agreeing on dinner plans
WORDS OF ADVICE FOR MARRIED COUPLES?
EMILY: Recognize and accept the fact that you are not going to love your spouse all the time. That’s a common misconception. In fact, there are going to be times
A LOVE STORY: DEREK & EMILY KLINEFELTER
when you really dislike your significant other. There are seasons in marriage. Be quick and sincere in your forgiveness, let go of your need to prove points, and remember you got married for a reason and remember all seasons come to an end. DEREK: Talk about everything always, and make decisions together not alone.
WHAT MADE YOU FALL IN LOVE WITH YOUR SPOUSE?
EMILY: Well… He is a total stud. I fell in love with how he lives life. When I think about how to describe his approach to life I think about the quote (referring to how we can learn from dogs, ha) “When someone you love walks through the door, even if it happens five times a day, you should go totally insane with joy.”- David Dudley. That’s Derek with every little thing: food, music, nature, people, etc. DEREK: Aside from all the cheesy things like: she’s beautiful, funny, and smart. I fell in love with her, because she never stops making things happen, because she is the most interesting person I’ve ever met, and she drives me to be a better man.

HOW & WHEN DID YOU MEET?
DEBE: I moved into Bill’s neighborhood when I was in 7th grade, and Bill hung out with my cousin, so I would see him a lot, and he was our paperboy. BILL: During the time we were in Junior High School Debe’s family and her cousin’s family moved into our neighborhood. I delivered the daily newspaper so I would see her occasionally. Within a year Debe’s family moved about ten miles away. We kept in touch thru high school because her cousin and I were good buddies.
LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT?
DEBE: No, we were friends for years; he graduated high school and went away to electronics school. When he was finished with school in Philadelphia and was fired by IBM in Fishkill, NY, he started hanging with my cousin again and we started dating when I was in 11th grade, and engaged Dec of 1969. BILL: Not love at first sight but we did become friends during our high school years. We started dating after I graduated from a technical school and got a good job. We fell in love after a few dates.

Be polite to each other. Say “I love you” many times a day. BILL: Never shout or call each other derogatory names. Stop and listen to what your spouse is saying. Marriage is not a 50-50 proposition. Sometimes each person has to give up 100 per cent.
WHAT MADE YOU FALL IN LOVE?
DEBE: Bill was there for me when I needed a friend, but I did not really know what LOVE was, until Bill & I were married for a few months. He and his loving family showed me the extent of love between people. We grew together as our marriage went on and I could not imagine my life without him. I believe I fell in love with his endless gift of love to me.
A LOVE STORY: BILL & DEBE McCARTNEY
BILL: After being friends for years and several dates we were driving around on a Saturday afternoon in July. We stopped at a fruit stand and got some cherries. Down the road was a farmer’s field so we parked under some shade trees. While sitting on the hood of the car eating the cherries I knew she was the one I wanted to marry.

SHOWCASE
Vance Gilbert
Vance Gilbert will appear as the second in Listen Up Brunswick County’s 2016 concert line-up on Saturday, February 20 at 7:00 pm at in the Virginia Williamson Events Center at Brunswick Community College’s Odell Williamson Auditorium. Listen Up director Jeannie Dufour says you never know what you’ll see when Gilbert shows up. “He may be sporting dreadlocks, an Afro, a shaved head or the prim and proper look. Each show is full of offthe-cuff Vance-isms,” she said. Dufour says she and Listen Up have a long history with Gilbert. “Vance got us started with our live, small, intimate, singer-songwriters in concert. He was our first experience when our little library back in Connecticut starting their concert series in 2006. We have been hooked ever since,” she said. As a teacher in Boston in the early 1990s, Gilbert began playing open mike nights at local coffee houses. His reputation spread and he was asked to open for folk artist Shawn Colvin on his national tour. Since then, Gilbert has released eight albums, including his most recent set of jazz standards, “Nearness Of You.” Researching this article, I found the advantages to living in the age of YouTube. While listening to bits of Gilbert’s music makes it clear this is an artist who is a wonderful musician with an impressive command of both his guitar and his own tenor voice, that only demonstrates a piece of his appeal. Videos of Gilbert’s live shows tell the rest of the story. He interacts with his audiences like a stand-up comic in a small venue. The introductions to his songs can be as long, and just as entertaining, as the songs themselves. I’m not sure Gilbert’s style would hold up in an arena, but his act is custom made for a room like the Virginia Williamson Events Center. This will be Listen Up Brunswick County’s second show in the Events Center. The first, a sell-out performance by The Ken-
nedy’s in January, was a huge success according to Dufour. “The venue was great. Mike (Sapp, manager of Odell Williamson Auditorium) and staff have everything under control; they are a well-oiled machine. Mike is certainly helping Listen Up Brunswick County grow, “ she said. “We received a lot of positive feedback about the room and look forward to our next three concerts there. The sound was perfect. Mike is so willing to do whatever he can to make our shows a success.” That success is aimed at helping the community. All profits from Listen Up Brunswick County shows are donated back to a local charity. This year, the beneficiary of Listen Up’s shows is the New Hope Clinic, a provider of a wide range of medical services to Brunswick County’s un- and under-insured population. “We have to wait until the end of the season to determine our donation to New Hope. Off-the-cuff, for a cause STORY BY: JEFFREY STITES
V
ance Gilbert’s upcoming visit to Brunswick County is in support of his just-released album of sublime jazz standards, but don’t think that that alone tells you who he is or what to expect. The man has opened for George Carlin as well. Gilbert is a coffee house folk act rooted in a love of jazz with the witty banter of a stand-up comic. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram describes him as possessing “the voice of an angel, the wit of a devil and the guitar playing of a god.”

BIZ Q & A Dream Weddings “Guaranteed”
event. Our phones ring off the hook. We are the 2 that know everything about everything. I’ve been at weddings and actually had people standing in line to ask me questions. This is what we take off the brides plate. She gets to be a bride and focus on what is happening..
Mother-daughter duo make promises they can keep!
Q. DO YOU HANDLE EACH ASPECT OF THE PLANNING OR CAN COUPLES DO SOMETHING ON THEIR OWN?
Wendy Hilliard and Nicole Finley
A. Both— we’ve actually worked with couples that never set foot here until their wedding day. We work with them via phone, email and skype. They leave it all up to us. Yes, this makes us nervous, but I’m happy to report that every couple has been thrilled. We’ve also had brides that had a very distinct vision and would take the lead in the look and décor. We love being whatever we need to be.
Q. DESCRIBE THE MOST CHALLENGING WEDDING YOU PLANNED , AND HOW YOU HANDLED THOSE CHALLENGES?
Q. DO YOU HAVE RELATIONSHIPS WITH VENDORS OUTSIDE THE SOUTHPORT AREA?
A. Well... Hurricanes are a real thing around here :) In this area, you really need to be prepared for bad weather. —But, the most challenging wedding was at the Amuzu Theater in Southport. The owner’s daughter’s dream was to have her wedding in the family owned theater. We had to completely gut it, remove theater chairs, props etc. We then brought in everything! Tables, Chairs, Lighting, Arbors— The week of the wedding we realized that we honestly did not have enough room for all the guests that had RSVP’d. We reworked the set up many times and then realized we could put the bridal party on the stage and even had guests in the balcony. The end result was perfect!! Magical!!! It was a fairy tail and worth it all!
Q. WOULD YOU SAY THAT A SENSE OF HUMOR IS VITAL TO YOUR ROLE?
STORY BY: LESLIE FOSTE R | PICTURE BY: WENDY HILLIARD
W
hen “everything matters” this mother-daughter team has both the experience, talent and desire to make a couple’s wedding day dreams a reality. Since 2009 Wendy and Nicole (right) have blended their skills to create one-of-a- kind weddings for countless couples. Their Southport based business (think destination wedding!) provides a beautiful backdrop for every couple on any budget. Q. WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO BE A WEDDING PLANNER? A. The job found me. I was a wedding photographer for years and more and more destination brides were asking me for vendor referrals, etc. As a photographer I got a behind the scenes look and became very aware that without a planner, it can be very difficult for a bride to enjoy her day. The decision to make the big leap to off planning services as well as photography came after my daughters Wedding in 2009. I was ready. Things grew so fast and I quickly realized I was in over my head. Thankfully, my daughter, Nicole Finley, relocated back to Southport and became my business partner.
Q. WHAT KIND OF PLANNING DO YOU PROVIDE? LOGISTICAL, DESIGN? A. Seaside Wedding Connection is able to help with as much or as little is needed. With most of our brides being from out of town, we usually are very involved with every detail. They count on us to be their hands and feet. We start with an overview of the big day, break it down and start crossing off the list. Logistics and design are equally important. Logistically our goal is create an effortless flow throughout the day for both the couple and the guests. Designing each wedding is easily one of our favorite aspects of the job. We love the process of bringing the bride’s vision to life. We have found that being hands on is very helpful. We will bring in linen, dinnerware and décor items for the client to play with and create an actual table scape. It is a wonderful collaboration.

Q. HOW MANY WEDDING CLIENTS DO YOU WORK WITH SIMULTANEOUSLY? A. Excellent question – we have to be very careful not to over commit. Each wedding deserves our best! It is rare that we will have more than one wedding per week. Our average during our busy season is 3 per month and we will probably help 30 couples say “I do” this year. I am so thankful for Nicole and her systems she has put into place. We are able to guarantee that nothing slips through the cracks and that every part of the planning process is stress free.
Q.DO YOU OFFER DIFFERENT PACKAGE OPTIONS OR IS EVERYTHING CUSTOMIZED? A. Yes and Yes— We have standard packages, Full Planning, Day of Planning as well as a’la carte options. Having said that, all of our weddings are customized. We strive to make sure every wedding is as unique as every couple.
Q. ITS THE DAY OF THE WEDDING! DESCRIBE YOUR ROLE. A. We are up very early— Our U-haul is already loaded and we have our staff up to speed. We arrive on site and start set up. It’s such an army and everyone knows their role. We are there as other vendors arrive and usually field hundreds of questions. We have to make sure all the puzzle pieces fit. We make sure all parties are following the time line. (Especially the groom and his groomsmen). We have our bridal ER kit stocked and ready and it ALWAYS comes in handy. Our goal is to have the set up complete in time for the bride to do a walk through and see her vision come to life. We always have to plan a time to change clothes as the day of is very labor intensive and we want to look nice for the
A. We do— Often, a bride will have a preferred vendor outside of our area. We strive to work with local vendors as we have developed a team approach and work great together. We know and work with numerous vendors and are able to make sure the bride gets the best for her day.
A. Oh My Goodness— YES!! We have to be so prepared, so ready, take responsibility and then roll with it. It’s not “if” something unexpected happens, it is “when” something unexpected happens. To do this job, you have to love what you do and keep a sense of humor.
Q. WHAT ARE THE QUALITIES THAT MAKE A GREAT WEDDING PLANNER?
A. I think answering this question will explain why Nicole and I are such a good team. It takes both of us, with different skills and talents to provide 100% of what is needed. I am the one the big picture person, encourager, positive attitude, net worker and photographer Nicole is the budget, logistics, staffing, efficiency expert, cool head. We both are focused on the bride and groom and will never forget that we get to be a part of the most important day of their lives. Everything matters!.

Cynthia & Kevin Hisle
My husband and I were so addicted to Southport, we were coming almost every two weeks to stay at Lois Jane’s. In April 2014, Kevin proposed on the top porch of the inn at sunset. The very next weekend we came down and bought a house in Bonnet’s Creek. We rushed back to Raleigh to sell our house, and we’ve been happily living in Southport ever since. Our wedding was September 27, 2015, the night of the blood moon and a monsoon rain. We were married at the community building with my children, grandchildren and parents there. No small feat to get everyone together from out of town. We invited our closest local friends and a few Raleigh friends. Our good friends, The Dennis Walton Band, accompanied by Ronnie Weinstein on piano, played at our reception. Dear friend, Rev, sang us down the impromptu aisle, since 10 minutes before the ceremony the sky fell out and only got worse. Everyone told me “Rain on your wedding day is lucky!”, so instead of a meltdown, I told everyone to be seated and made the corner overlooking the water our altar. Local officiant Jim Brown made our ceremony short, but sweet. Kevin’s sister, a missionary in Portugal, had made a special trip over to give a lovely blessing during the ceremony. Our wedding was also extra special because my oldest son, Kent, proposed to his long time girlfriend, Shilo, during my bouquet toss. My idea! He’d been wracking his brain how to surprise her, which wasn’t easy since she knew he’d had the ring they’d designed for months. I thought it was the perfect occasion since all the family was gathered in one spot, and she’d never suspect. When she caught the bouquet (direct aim), Kent dropped to one knee and said “That’s the last time you have to catch the bouquet!” She’d caught it at the last three weddings they’d attended. Everyone at the wedding loved seeing them get engaged, and it made my wedding extra meaningful. Maybe rain on your wedding day really is lucky!

Joseph’s Italian Bistro A pairing of elegance and warmth tucked away in South Harbor. STORY BY: REBECCA JONES | PHOTOS BY GERI KARABIN
A
t Joseph’s Italian Bistro the menu matches the breathtaking views of the harbor. It is the baby of husband and wife team, Joe and Debra Borsuk.
While this is Joe and Deb’s first restaurant together, they in their own rights are no strangers to the restaurant biz. Joe has been working in restaurants since he was eleven, from washing dishes to being a busboy; waiter- bartender- kitchen manager- all of it. He started in his Aunt and Uncle’s Italian Restaurant A’Zarro’s in California, worked at The Krebs in Skaneateles, NY, The Bridge Tender in Wilmington before being invited to help develop the new restaurant, Fish Factory, in the then relatively new development on the mainland side of the Oak Island Bridge, South Harbor. Restaurants- “its all Joe’s ever known,” confides Deb. Her restaurant background came later after leaving a corporate career and Raleigh, with the opening of the Village Market and Deli in South Harbor. By this time in the early 2000’s the couple had joined talents and gone from dating to marriage and dreaming of an Italian restaurant, to creating one: Joseph’s Italian Bistro- opening September 18, 2003. They’ve been busy ever since with their family. Together they have five kids and five grandkids. They have been
busy building Joseph’s Italian Bistro’s stellar reputation. “Consistency” is key, emphasizes Deb, “ we get repeat customers that order the same thing every time. We strive to deliver that dish so that it’s as good as it was the first time.” “The menu itself is the original menu since day one. We’ve added a few like the mussels and Mama Rosa’s meatballs. Joe’s Mom’s recipe taught to her by her mother”, says Deb, “and we run specials. We are creating something that is consistent, time and time again. Bringing people back. We never want people to bring their guests and feel as if a dish isn’t the same.” Some of the dishes that Joseph’s is known for are the pan seared grouper in a lemon buerre blanc and the soft shell crab lasagna, or the Shrimp Scampi “Joseph’s Style” sautéed in fresh garlic, shallots and herbs with a light “sherry” wine sauce served over linguine. In addition to the popular Seafood dishes Joseph’s offers pastas, like the Linguine Ala Carbonara. It is a classic sauce that combines the flavors of smoked bacon, onions, Parmesan
cheese and cracked black pepper; as well as chicken, steaks, rack of lamb and veal, like the Veal Picatta; veal sautéed, served with a lemon caper sauce and a side of linguine marinara. “Joe comes in everyday and prepares the sauces”, says Deb, emphasizing again the importance of consistency. “They are Joe’s recipes. They are the foundation for the meals. The marinara, the Alfredo, the clam sauce and veal stock for the bases [are all prepared the same way every time].” Consistency also has been a theme with the staff at Joseph’s. Bobby Wright, Head Line Cook was actually with Deb at The Village Market and Deli. Sous Chef Ryan Johnson and Manager Chris Major have been with Joseph’s for years. “We couldn’t do it without them,” stresses Deb, “they are like family.” And it does feel like a family affair, “all of our kids have worked here at some point or another,” says Deb. Joe and Deb’s youngest son, Trey, is attending culinary school, and finds his way back to the Joseph’s kitchen when in town. Deb relies heavily on the wait staff, as well. Many of them have worked at Joseph’s for years. “We want the servers to be able to know what goes well with what
and to feel confidant in their recommendations,” says Deb, giving an example, “what would go better with a particular dish- a Cabernet or Chianti?” And the wine list is extensive with Italian wines and Californian wines, “We try and carry small vineyard wines, wines that are not mass produced”, says Deb, “We do wine pairing dinners by reservations. We create a menu paired with wines.” The wine paring dinners include four courses; appetizer, salad, entree and dessert, paired with four different wines. The restaurant is more spacious than its outside appearance. There are two private rooms that hold eight to twelve guests that can be held by reservations for larger parties or specialty events. These are the rooms where the wine pairings are hosted. The fully stocked bar has seating and high tables that look out over the harbor. The dining area boasts more views of the inter-coastal waterway. The outdoor area has recently been enclosed for comfortable outdoor seating year round with neutral colors and rustic warm wood, highlighted by soft sparkling lights. Joe and Deb have created in Joseph’s a consistent pairing that, like good food and good wine, is both cozy and elegant.

CHEERS
Let The One Who Drinks This Wine, Shower me with love divine… BY: JENNIFER BARNETT
W
hen someone says love potion many images come to mind; bubbles shaped like hearts floating around the spinning head of a seemingly drunk person, swooning and pie eyed over someone they don’t really know.
It’s a little hard to swallow and uncomfortable. In fact, any notion of ingesting a substance that could instantly cause your heart to desire someone to the point of surrender is terrifying! Love is precious and vulnerable, complicated and intense! Think about it for a moment; we all have been at a place in our lives where if there had been a concoction we could have used to make someone love us, we would have used it! You may be surprised to know that Love Potions do exist and have been present throughout history for centuries. It turns out there are scents that can work wonders on your mind and body to help with passion. With Valentine’s Day ahead, why not try one of these recipes instead of Champagne and a dozen roses? What’s the worse that can happen? You just might become a believer in Love Potions!
used to spark passion for, quite literally, centuries. 1 tablespoon of dried rose petals The sensual smell of rose helps to lower anxiety, which can spike, in romantic situations… Vanilla pod split, or ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract - Its warm scent (and taste) is welcoming, subtly sensual, and relaxing. (There is an old Mexican legend about a fertility goddess who could not marry the mortal man she loved. Instead of becoming bitter, she transformed herself into the vanilla plant to give happiness and pleasure to all lovers.) 1-2 cinnamon sticks - The cinnamon creates a fine balance with the more soothing scents of rose, jasmine, and vanilla. While those help relax you, the cinnamon ensures that you still get a burst of fiery passion and energy. 1 cup of fresh water A pot or saucepan A strainer
DIRECTIONS:
LOVE POTION INGREDIENTS:
2 teaspoons of dried jasmine flowers - The distinct, sweet scent induces euphoria in both men and women, and has been
Pour 1 cup of fresh water into a saucepan (more or less to make the potion stronger or weaker) Add 2 teaspoons of dried jasmine flowers, 1 tablespoon of dried rose petals, a vanilla pod split lengthwise or ¼ teaspoon of vanilla extract, and 1-2 cinnamon sticks to the water. Gently stir to incorporate everything, and then simmer for 3-5 minutes. Remove from heat and strain immediately. Allow this to cool and then bottle it. Add to sparkling water and serve chilled on a hot day, or pour into mugs and reheat, sipping slowly. You can also use it straight. It will keep in the fridge for a week in a tightly lidded container.
LOVE POTION #9
To be performed on the 9th day of the 9th month. (Requires some thinking ahead for Valentines Day, but go ahead and give it a try!)
INGREDIENTS:
9 oz. sweet red wine 9 basil leaves 9 red rose petals 9 cloves 9 apple seeds 9 drops vanilla extract 9 drops strawberry juice 9 drops apple juice 1 ginseng root, cut into 9 equal pieces
DIRECTIONS:
By the light of 9 pink votive candles, put these nine ingredients into a cauldron (or pot) on the ninth hour of the ninth day of the ninth month of the year. Stir the potion nine times with a wooden spoon, each time reciting the following: LET THE ONE WHO DRINKS THIS WINE SHOWER ME WITH LOVE DIVINE. SWEET LOVE POTION NUMBER NINE MAKE HIS/HER LOVE FOREVER MINE. Bring the mixture to a boil and then reduce the heat and let it simmer for nine minutes. Remove the cauldron (pot) from the heat and allow the potion to cool off. Blow nine times upon the potion, bless it in the names of nine love-goddesses, (*see below) and then strain it through cheesecloth into a clean container. Cover and refrigerate it until you are ready to serve it to the man or woman whom you desire love and affection. (Do not allow anyone other than your beloved to look at, touch, or drink the love potion.) *(The nine goddesses of Love: Inanna, Ishtar, Astarte, Hathor, Nephthys, Aphrodite, Venus, Freya, Arianrhod.)

A Small Home With Flair A Place To Live, Laugh And Love
STORY BY: KATHLEEN MCGOWAN | PHOTOS BY GRAY WELLS

“ t is cliché to say we’d like our guest to feel comfortable when
visiting our home but that really is our goal. The house has stood for 115 years … there isn’t much harm you can do to it.” - Robert Carroll
From the curb, the Carroll’s home appears to be a modest yet quaint home but take a couple steps through the tidy little yard to the front porch and visitors are greeted with a combination of retro and classic items, adding character to the
space. A rustic white porch swing provides extra seating for this spacious wrapped covered porch as well as furnishing the perfect spot to stretch out for a long afternoon nap after a day at the beach. Better yet, take a seat, kick back and relax in one www.SouthportMag.com / February 2016 / Southport Magazine 31

Straight out of the Post-War Atomic Era, the steel chairs offer a vintage look and feel with detailed cutouts...The fact that they offer a slight rocking motion is a bonus. It’s just the beginning of a lovely, timeless journey through Robert and Michelle’s 115-year-old Southport home. Robert and Michelle Carroll have been married for six years. They were introduced to each other by a mutual friend and started dating during Michelle’s senior year of high school. Robert moved from Southern Virginia to Southport in 2007, after holidaying here with his family almost his entire life. He had decided to call Southport home and was just beginning his successful real estate career. Robert recalls with a smile...I remember Michelle’s reaction when I told her… “Where in the world is that?” Michelle visited Southport and she fell in love with the area without hesitation. The decision is one the couple has never regretted. Fast forward to 2008 and the couple was engaged and they were married one year later, in 2009. The young couple purchased their first house just on the edge of town but always

knew they wanted to live in the historic district. When 307 E. Nash came on the market they had been planning construction, for almost 12 months, of a house on a lot they had purchased here in town. Michelle came across an advertisement for 307 E. Nash and knew they had to see it. She and Robert saw it one time and afterwards she said to Robert...“Figure it out!” They loved the location, the size of the lot and the character that they knew could never be recreated with new construction. With my first steps inside the Carroll’s home, the mix of the modern, the contemporary and the ease of the simply inviting space charm me. The décor, furnishings and white, gray and yellow color palette are simply eclectic, the spaces are wide open and the result creates a vision of control yet having control never looked so good. The home may be small in scale but it is a modern mini marvel. The couple is happy to say that the home at 307 E. Nash felt like theirs from
the very first time they saw it. Bringing in their own eclectic furnishings and décor made it even more their own. The character lines of old wooden floors, walls and ceilings and the wavy glass panes are perfectly paired with eclectic, found and modern elements to create uncharacteristic results. The mood is timeless yet at home in the moment. “We loved the house from the start. It’s historic charm, large lot and proximity to downtown Southport were everything we wanted. What we didn’t expect was how we’d learn to love it even more. Many nights we grab a bottle of wine and walk to dinner. Some mornings we wake to the sound of foghorns from boats on the Cape Fear. We can set our clocks by the church bells. And we never have to worry about parking for the Fourth of July festivities.” - Robert Carroll An old rustic, brick fireplace separates the living area from the kitchen yet, allows for flow and communication between both spaces. This is key since the couple
“We loved the house from the start. It’s historic charm, large lot and proximity to downtown Southport were everything we wanted. What we didn’t expect was how we’d learn to love it even more.“ loves to entertain and the house is perfect for intimate gatherings of 2-3 couples or more. Being able to host events with as many as 24 people is not an issue with the ease of movement throughout the home and the kitchen functionality. Both Robert and Michelle cook and love trying new and different cooking methods so, the
kitchen’s sleek, professional furnishings were chosen carefully to blend with the overall character of the home. The Carroll’s want guests to not only visit but, to enjoy their home as well. Don’t be afraid to kick off your shoes and curl up in a studded occasional chair or take a seat at the kitchen counter where you’re able to chat with the cook as well as guests gathering in the nearby living and dining areas. The interior space is inviting, much like the small town of Southport, and it emanates small town life. When I asked Robert how he wanted guests to feel in his home, his answer was simple... “It is cliché to say we’d like our guest to feel comfortable when visiting our home but that really is our goal. The house has stood for 115 years… there isn’t much harm you can do to it.” The dining room is spacious with plenty of light and a charming built-in china cabinet in one corner. It is open to the kitchen/living area but can function as a more

private dining space as well with sliding “barn doors” on either side of the dining room entry. They were originally French doors separating two rooms in the house which Matt Watson, who completed the restoration, worked hard to keep along with many of the homes other historic features while adding modern conveniences you’d find in newer homes. Anyone that’s owned an older home, knows how easy it can be to forget the good things about your home, especially if you’re dealing with issues like running toilets or outdated wallpaper. But, at this point, there isn’t much that the couple wants to change. There are plans to renovate the pantry and laundry area to create more storage and to raise the ceiling height in the living room and kitchen to open the space up a bit but they would never change that the entire house has wood floors, walls and ceilings. During restoration, the toughest deci34 Southport Magazine / February 2016 / www.SouthportMag.com
sion for the couple to make about their home was what to do with the windows. Replace or restore? Well, “Michelle dug her heels in and made certain I restored, rather than replaced. I am slowly restoring one window at a time. Sanding, priming, painting, and replacing the old wavy glass with a reproduction glass I found out of New Jersey.” They wanted to keep the charm of a historic home with the wavy glass panes that are usually original so, the new glass is made in the very same style

HOMESTYLE as the original glass so, it still has the wavy look and includes a few bubbles here and there. This truly is a home re-thought. The office, master bed and both baths are full of charm. Each has its own elements of today and yesterday, texture and tone, form and function. There’s more sliding barn doors, a wide enameled cast iron double sink, a private shower space with stone features and plenty of old features meeting new and found furnishings. But, my favorite room is the nursery. The overall wish for the nursery was that it be a peaceful environment for the couple’s new baby to learn and grow. They chose not to know the sex of their child until birth, which meant a more neutral palette. They had the walls, trim and ceiling painted the same color and sheen of white and layered different shades and textures of grey throughout the room. The space is enchanting and became the new home for Reighan Elisabeth who was born on January 8, 2016. Robert and Michelle would like to think that their children would someday describe the home they grew up in “as a simple home that was filled with love. They’ll likely reminisce about the sound rain made as it poured down onto the metal roof, the way the floors in the hallway slant to one corner or how the house never seemed to be “finished” as with older homes there is always something to be done.” As for Valentine’s Day... The Carroll’s are self-proclaimed foodies. One of the things they love most about Southport and the surrounding area is the many wonderful places to eat. They are looking forward to celebrating Valentine’s Day this year at the newly renovated Mr. P’s Bistro.

Bringing Back Date Night
FOR FOODIE COUPLES:
Add more sparks to your relationship! STORY BY: LESLIE RESCHLY, BSN, RN
I

FOR COUPLES THAT ENJOY GOOD SPIRITS:
Leslie and Dr. Keith Reschly
I have a vivid recollection of one such Valentine’s Day probably in the mid1990’s—held captive by the whims of a 15 year old babysitter in love for the first time, we found ourselves without childcare on the most important of love nights. Determined to make the most of our weekend, we decided to take all three children to a restaurant for lunch. I know we did not talk and I have no idea what we ate. We spent the meal in the bathroom and cleaning up spills! But I do know that from then on we initiated Date Night. Couples at every stage of their relationship are over-booked, over-tired, and
over-worked. The last thing we need is to add another thing to our calendars, right? Wrong! Date Night offers a quick trip back to that period of courtship where dreams of romance and love were not obscured by the fact that the bed never got made nor the dishes put in the sink. Date Night offers the opportunity to connect and focus on each other. It is different then just going out for the night. It is set with intent to provide a time for communication and nurturing of your relationship, one on one, with something new and fun or tried and true. So turn off your electronic devices and focus on the love of your life.

Romantic Films
10 reasons to stay in for Valentine’s Day BY: EMILY KLINEFELTER AND JENNIFER BARNETT
W
ith Valentine’s Day near and love being in the air and on the shelves of every large corporate business for the past 2 months. We have decided to do something a little different with Scene. Instead of writing a review we decided to hit the streets and find out opinions on what the best romantic movies are and create the first ever Southport Magazine Top 10 List. We were trying to stay away from the predictable movies and offer up some different choices. Maybe there are some on the list you haven’t seen yet! Even though Valentine’s Day is kind of like the Super Bowl for women we like to recognize that this day is a day to celebrate LOVE—just love—and love does not discriminate against what sex you are. So, since we are not discriminating we have decided to create two lists one from the opinion of women and one in the opinion of men. We wanted to learn two things in this process. First being, what does love mean and second what would you say is the best romantic movie. We were quite surprised by how similar the movie answers were even though men and women are so opposite as we witness by the verbal responses. We learned that though there are many types of love that we see in movies and experience in life we seem to be most attracted to the deep desire, pining, love relationship. The love that last through time and requires persistence and effort. We found it odd since in todays society men and women live so quickly and want everything so much faster that still deep down inside our hearts we want something that lasts a long time and is tireless. I will say however that looking over these lists I do in fact see a lot of my personal favorites, however, The Princess Bride did not make the list. Which in my opinion is INCONVCEIVIBLE! “There is no room in my body for anything but you. My arms love you, my ears adore you, my knees shake with blind affection”- Buttercup—come on isn’t that love?! I wish my husband would save me from quick sand and take on R.O.U.Ss…. be still my heart.
