ON THE COVER

What a Lucky Pup Our Cover Model - Molly is a rescue. She is so cute, has such expresive eyes, we all fell in love with this photo and found it perfect for the cover. This is Molly’s story: “I found Molly at the Brunswick Sheriff Animal Adoption facility in Supply in June of 2016 and they estimated that she was about 3 years old at the time. She was found by the side of a highway covered in prickers and had lost about half of her body weight.

She’s really come a long way since then and is the most loving dog. She loves chasing my 2 rescue cats and has made friends with every person and animal she has met. If she isn’t getting enough attention she starts squeaking her toys as loudly as she can. I love her to death and consider myself extremely lucky to have found her. I’m retired and moved here 2 years ago so we spend a lot of time together.” Gay Rosenberg, Molly’s Owner

CURRENTS New Pet? No Prob! Smooth transition advice from the pros STORY BY LISA STITES

W

hether you got a new pet for the holidays, or you’re just thinking it may be a good time to bring a new furry friend into your home, a little bit of planning ahead of time can make for a smooth transition. If you’re planning to adopt a dog from a shelter or rescue organization, or buy one from a reputable breeder, you should do a little research ahead of time to get an idea of what breed best suits your lifestyle. Do you love being outdoors, running or walking, or tossing a ball? There’s a dog for that. If you’d rather curl up on the couch and cuddle, there’s a dog for that too. Do you love to travel and take your dog with you? Maybe a small breed would work. Are you around lots of children? Find a breed that’s kid-friendly. Once you’ve decided what kind of dog is best for you, you’ll find many options for choosing your dog. Brunswick County Animal Shelter (http://aps. brunswicksheriff.com/) operates a shelter, and S.O.A.R.(http://soar-nc.org/) in Oak Island and Paw’s Place (http:// www.pawsplace.org/) in Winnabow are great places to start too. Veterinarian Dr. Audra Rickman has been taking care of pets in our area for almost 22 years and has owned her clinic, Four Paws Animal Hospital for 12 years. “I love rescued/adopted pets,” Dr. Rickman said. “I know there are reasons that owners seek out certain breeds, but breed standards are a guideline. Not all labs are warm and fuzzy (yes, most are), and not all dobermans want to bite you (hi from my Pit Bull). I personally have a mix of both. I have an adopted and a non-adopted.” There are also specific breed rescue groups, so wanting a specific breed doesn’t mean you can’t save a rescue, she noted. Dr. Rickman said she is also very wary of trends. When the movie “101 Dalmatians” came out, she said veterinarians were terrified that shelters would be flooded with Dalmatians

ACE: This Lab/Pit bull mix is right at home at the clinic, spending the day hanging out with friends and visitors while his human works.

Dr. Rickman and some of her best clinic helpers -- staff at the Animal Hospital often brings their furry friends to work

bought by well-meaning parents only to realize this was not the right breed for their family. She said she feels the same way about the “designer-mutts” somewhat. Just because you mix a poodle with a certain breed, like the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, it doesn’t mean that the dog will be either hypoallergenic or have a decreased risk of the heart disease that is so prevalent in Cavaliers. “Giving it the cute “Cavi-poo” name does not mean it will be a healthier dog.,” she said. Whichever route you choose to bring a new dog into your home, it’s important for everyone to meet to make sure your personalities mesh. Dr. Rickman advises that unless you are picking out a pet for your children, giving a dog as a present is not a great idea. “Just like people have personalities, pets also have personalities,” Dr. Rickman said. “It’s important that a person

10 Southport Magazine / JANUARY 2018 / www.SouthportMag.com

bond with their pet and often times that starts in a meeting room at a shelter or in a room at a breeder’s home. Breed descriptions can give some guidance as to what pet might work well with your family, but remember every dog/cat has their own personality. Breed descriptions are a guide, but not set in stone.” Dr. Rickman also recommends researching potential health concerns associated with a specific breed if you’re determined to find a particular one. She used her own Cavalier King Charles Spaniel as an example, saying they have several specific and potentially costly health issues that an owner needs to consider before they decide they have to have one. Before you bring your new dog, cat, puppy or kitten home, getting the house ready will also help the transition. “Are they into everything? Do they try to eat paper? Do they try to eat plastic? Do they try to chew on wires? Usually confining the amount of space they are allowed to roam in is a good idea. Gradually introduce them to the house,” Dr. Rickman said. Regular exercise is important for your new dog, and there are plenty of places to make that happen and enjoy all the beauty of the area. Southport, Boiling Spring Lakes and Oak Island all have several parks that are just perfect for strolling. Remember to keep your dog

on a leash, and make sure you clean up after your dog. Oak Island also has two dog parks where your dog can run free — a smaller one at Hannon Templeton Park on East Oak Island Drive, and the Salty Dog Park at Bill Smith Park on Fish Factory Road, with separate areas for large or small dogs. Caswell Beach and Oak Island are dog-friendly beaches, with just a few simple rules. You’ll need to clean up after your dog, and keep your dog on a leash here too. Oak Island has dog waste bags at beach accesses, and there are some times when dogs may be off leash on the beach. From October 15 to March 15, between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m., dogs can be off a leash under a few conditions. Dogs can’t be left unattended, they must be under visual and voice control at all times and they shouldn’t visit with other beach-goers or dogs without permission. With proper care, exercise, and plenty of love, you and your new pet can have many years of happiness together. For Dr. Rickman, the best part of her role is helping animals stay healthy and stay with their families. “Protecting and fostering the bond between owners and their pets is an amazing job,” she said. “And, yes, puppies and kittens are fun.”

CURRENTS Snakes are Pets Too Exotic pets are not for everyone. STORY & PHOTOS BY CARLA EDSTROM

M

y first snake was just this little garter snake my dad got me at a pet store,” said Southport resident and long-time exotic pet owner Melanie Dess.

“The garter snake was my first snake but he’s not quite exotic, but I had cockatiels and parakeets since I was probably 12,” she said. She considers snakes some of the most interesting pets she has ever owned. “They don’t form attachments to you like dogs and cats do, but they seem to learn to recognize you if your the one who always brings them food.” She explained that they all have their own distinct personalities, much like owning a cat

or dog. And getting to know them and how they process information and act in their environment is fascinating. “Some are shy, some can be a bit grumpy until you take them out of their enclosures. They’re always curious and they love to hang out on you when holding them for your body heat,” she said. “They are pretty smart in their own right. I could watch them all day.” Dess know the personality of each of her snakes and they are an important part of her family. “People

don’t think snakes are adorable, I swear some of them need parents as much as some dogs,” she said. Working at All About Dogs pet grooming, she is always around animals and most of her pets were rescued. In fact she decided to adopt one of her dogs when a rescue group brought in an adorable boxer mix to be groomed. “I have four dogs, two Chihuahuas named Ezekiel and Nefarian, a boxer mix named Lyla, and another boxer bully breed mix named Meat Hook. I also have two cats; a big chubby black one named Nightshade and a tiny calico named Sekhmet, two pet rats named Orpheus and Lyre and of course four snakes- Clever Girl, Bartholomew, Marshmallow, and Samael. I also breed mice and rats so I have over 100 mice, and currently only 12 rats that aren’t pets,” she explains. Desses current pet snakes include a 7 1/2 foot long Irian Jaya Carpet Python and three Ball Pythons of varying colors and personalities. The Carpet Python is an arboreal species of python, which means they love to climb and rest in perches. “I call her Clever Girl after the raptor in the original Jurassic Park who is too smart for her own good,” she said. “She’s my most vocal snake and can be really grumpy. But once out (of her enclosure) she’s as happy as can be.” Desses largest Ball Python, Bartholomew, is 5 feet long. “He’s a pastel morph so he’s yellow and light brown,” she said. “Like all Ball pythons, they like to hide all day. They’re nocturnal, and they love to have cozy hides and lots

of clutter in their cages.” She explained that although he is shy, Bartholomew likes to come out of of the enclosure to see people. Another Ball Python she named Marshmallow is a gorgeous ivory color. “He’s stark white with little grey specs on his head, and has 3 black scales on his side in the shape of a heart,” she said. Her fourth Ball Python named Samael is a darker pastel color. “He’s super curious,” she said. “You go near his enclosure and he’s out and about wondering if you brought him anything. He’s a bit cheeky and (also) likes to break the things I put in his enclosure.” Dess obtained three of her snakes from Bruce Felker at Fresh Start Farm and Rescue and they maintain a good relationship as she often donates mice to them. Fresh Start takes in exotic reptiles that are relinquished and those seized by law enforcement from owners. “ We are an outlet for unwanted reptiles, many people buy them at pet shops as juvenile cute reptiles and four years later when they outgrow their homes usually end up with us,’ Felker explained. According to Felker, the main problem with private ownership of reptiles is some people only see the thrill of owning a snake or lizard. They don’t always consider the long-term care. “The work it takes to feed and properly care for a reptile can be overwhelming and expensive,” he explains. “They just impulse buy and don’t do proper research and then panic or very quickly lose interest and end up with a sick reptile that can be very expensive to take to the vet.” Felker urges that if you want to adopt a reptile, do your research and make sure it is the right pet for you. “Reptiles require larger housing as they grow, they require hot and proper humidity to maintain a healthy life, there’s a lot to learn about proper care. You’ll also need a reliable food source and rodents and insects can be hard to find. And just don’t impulse buy and you need to know your local laws on keeping them as they vary from county to county,” he adds. If you are interested in adopting a retile from the rescue, they take the adoption process very seriously. “If you decide to adopt a reptile from Fresh Start be prepared to answer numerous questions

about the care, we will go out and see your setup and will return for a welfare check a few times,’ said Felker. For more information about the rescue, you can reach them at http://www.freshstartrescueinc.com/. Dess wholeheartedly agrees that it’s important do a lot of research before you decide to own a reptile, and know your limitations. Joining online breed specific groups helps, and it’s worth the trouble once you get everything figured out. “I’d have more snakes if I had the space for more snakes.” She suggests that once a new snake owner gets through the initial learning stage, having these pets is a very rewarding and easy experience.

ear cat owners, You’re falling down on the job. OK, not all of you, but a lot of you. A recent study showed that 50% of adult cats are never brought to the vet unless they are sick or injured. This means that all kinds of thing are going unchecked and pet cats may be suffering needlessly. Yup. I said it. Suffering. I talk to pet owners all day. Many have both cats and dogs and bring their dogs in for all of their routine care: exams, vaccinations, preventatives. But some of these same people never bring in their cats. The top 2 reasons I hear are: 1) My cat is an indoor cat, so they don’t need anything; or 2) It’s too difficult to get my cat in the carrier and too stressful. I’d rather not put them through that. So let me address the first part first. Living indoors is not living in a bubble. Cats still age, and as such they change and sometimes hurt. Cats, although we think of them as predators, are also really prey – to any animal larger than they are as well as other cats. And the prey part of their being makes them hide illness and injury because if they don’t they might lose their territory or get beat up or get killed.

So what could be going on with your seemingly healthy indoor cat? Plenty! Every time that door opens, things could potentially come in: did you pet another cat? If so, you could bring home an illness. Did you walk in the dirt? If so, you might have brought in intestinal parasites. Were you wearing pants? If so, a flea or tick could have hitched a ride. Ever seen a mosquito in the house? Yup, they carry disease your cat could get. 50% of indoor only cats have some sort of parasite. What else? The big ones are dental disease (when’s the last time you looked at your cat’s teeth?), pain and arthritis, obesity, and early stages of diseases like kidney failure, thyroid disease and diabetes. And the percentages aren’t low! About 70% of cats over age 3-5 have dental disease – and it hurts! 50%

CURRENTS of cats are overweight, which can lead to arthritis and diabetes. 25-50% of cats have pain, usually back pain. And all those awful diseases? If we catch them early they’re very manageable. If you wait until your cat has lost 5 pounds and isn’t eating…not as much so. As for getting them there… we can help! Your vet have lots of tips for getting your cat in the carrier, for keeping them calm on the ride, and can even offer sedatives (you’ve heard of “sedation dentistry?” this is the cat version!). Some vets even do house calls and our hospital is trying out a pick up service this January (we’ll come to your house and get your cat, then return him or her all fixed up!) . OK. Now you know. Your cat may be hiding parasites, a terrible toothache, back pain, or harboring the beginnings of a disease we can nip in the bud. AND there’s help to get them to the vet with minimal stress.

Don’t let your cat suffer from lack of care. We know you love them and want them to be happy, but there’s no true happy without healthy. So call your vet – MEOW IS THE TIME!

With five large bedrooms, you have plenty of choices of arrangements. I love the option of a sofa-bed or futon room with entertainment center, the perfect spot for the kids to enjoy “movie night” while the grown ups hang out too. Or make it the cozy spot, ideal for relaxing - enjoying the latest Nicholas Sparks novel, with the ocean view as the perfect backdrop. Or better yet - write your own! LOOKING BACK Breed All About it! A history of popular dog breeds BY KASS FINCHER

I

n the clothes we wear, the music we enjoy and the cars we drive, American popular culture tends to influence many aspects of our life choices. It shows who we are, or at least aspire to be.

Choosing the family dog is no different. Over time, the most popular breeds in our country have not been just a reflection of the economic times; they have often reflected what’s popular on the screen. Since the early 1900s, the American Kennel Club has maintained a list of the most popular breeds. Here are the top breeds from 1900 to today. 1900s: Collie This lovable breed held sway in the top 10 for seven decades. Their origins are murky, but were thought to have originated as herding dogs in Scotland and northern England. Of course TV’s Lassie in the 1960s only added to the breed’s high profile – the dog’s loyalty and many rescues of the accident-prone Timmy made every child want one.

1920s: German Shepherd Loyal, intelligent and hard-working, this breed jumped to prominence in part thanks to the stardom of canine actors. “Strongheart” was a 125-pound German dog trained as an attack police dog and used in the German military in WW1. After training to reduce some of his aggressive behaviors, he went on to make his first movie – “The Silent Call” – in 1921, and became a star. “Rin Tin Tin” was rescued from the battlefield by an American soldier, and went on to appear in 27 movies and achieve international fame.

1910s: Boston Terrier The first American-created breed to make the list, this dog was a cross between an English bulldog and a white English terrier. No lapdog, though small, the Boston Terrier is known for its intelligence and playful nature. They stayed in the top 10 for six decades.

1940s: Cocker Spaniel The smallest of the spaniels, this breed stayed in the top 10 for 16 years. Again, a well-known canine star prompted many people to want this dog. “My Own Brucie” was an AKC Westminster Best of Show winner in those years. Stubborn but beautiful, he was said to have been the most photographed dog in the world.

1960s-1970s: Poodle This elegant breed held the number one spot for two decades. A famous example was Marilyn Monroe’s “Maf”- a gift from Frank Sinatra. Originally from Germany, the breed was bred to hunt and retrieve ducks; the German word “pudel” means to splash in the water. 1980s: Cocker Spaniel Making a comeback in this decade, this breed continues to be a popular choice. 1990s: Labrador Retriever Now holding the top spot for the past 30 years, this breed was originally from Newfoundland. Notoriously spirited but a great family dog, the Labrador Retriever

1950s: Beagle The earliest origins of this breed appear to be the 1860s, when they were brought from England. Once again, popular culture influenced this breed’s rise to the top. Charlie Brown’s best friend Snoopy in the Peanuts comics made this breed an irresistible choice.

The Painted Mermaid JEWELRY • FURNITURE LOCAL ART HOME ACCESSORIES GIFTS • AND MORE

1930s: Boston Terrier Once again, this popular breed bounced back to the top of the pack. They had remained in the top three spots for the previous three decades. It seemed that the Depression years favored breeds that were smaller, companion types.

needs lots of exercise, preferably swimming and chasing balls. Today some of these previously popular breeds still hold our favor. Here is the AKC top 10 list from 2016. 1. Labrador Retriever 2. German Shepherd 3. Golden Retriever 4. Bulldog 5. Beagle 6. French Bulldog 7. Poodle 8. Rottweiler 9. Yorkshire Terrier 10. Boxer Today, because of the amount of information out there, making a choice for one’s best friend can be almost overwhelming. On the internet, one can research the breed’s personality traits, needs and nature – both good and bad. Are they good with children? Do they need lots of outdoor space? How much exercise do they need? What are their potential health issues? Or there’s another option. You can go to your nearest shelter and pick out a rescue dog. He or she will undoubtedly be overcome with love for you. Not a hard choice for some of us.

SAVOR Famous Subs & Pizza Italian/Greek/Southern Fried Goodness STORY BY KASS FINCHER

I

n the clothes we wear, the music we enjoy and the cars we drive, American popular culture tends to influence many aspects of our life choices. It shows who we are, or at least aspire to be. One of our oldest family businesses in Southport successfully combines Italian subs and pizza, Greek gyros and Southern fried chicken for a tasty menu that keeps locals and tourists coming back for more. When Famous Subs and Pizza owners – brothers Bill and John Vogiatzis – came with their parents to the United States, they were just 16 and 19 years old. The

family was originally from the Macedonia region of Greece, a northern area that was once the home of Alexander the Great, whom many agree was one of the most influential people in cultural and military history. From this background of tradition, the brothers and their parents moved to Massachusetts initially, but within five years

began looking for a restaurant business opportunity in our area. In the early 1980s, they started talking to partners of Wilbur Hardee about a restaurant here. The founder of Hardee’s restaurants was selling his other chain of “Little Mints” in North Carolina. The restaurants had been named

this to convey his vision – they would be small and would make him a mint – but apparently that had not worked out. So in the summer of 1983, the Vogiatzis bought their restaurant business in Southport and named it Famous Subs and Pizza. It opened just down the road and only two month after Hardee’s on Howe Street. Bill describes those early days. “We kept it as just pizza and subs in the beginning, then we started expanding it. We ran it at first as breakfast, lunch and dinner. But Hardee’s kind of took the breakfast crowd, so we changed it to just lunch and dinner.” He goes on to describe how much has changed in Southport in those 34 years. “When we took over, there was just one pizzeria – it was back behind us. The Roses department store was located there too. There was really nothing here – not even the street beside us or neighborhoods behind us. Southport is a small town now, but it was really small then.” Over time the brothers expanded the

As busy as they are running the business, Bill and John want the community to know about their commitment to quality and a personal touch. “We are fully involved in our business, so everything we do is done with care” relates Bill. “We’re 100% involved and work hard to please our customers.”

seating area and hired more people. Today the restaurant has seating for 94 and a staff of 17, with perhaps 8 full time employees. Still, the family’s involvement is key, though it’s limited to just the brothers. “We made a truce; no wives would be involved,” says Bill with a smile. “It keeps things simpler.” As the wives are busy with their own careers and children, Bill and John are fully involved on a daily basis in their business. The brothers take pride in their homemade food selections. The New England-style fresh dough pizzas – especially the house special and meat lovers pizza – are among the favorites. Other popular selections include the Italian sub and steak ‘n cheese subs. And of course Greek specialties like pitas and gyros are definitely tasty choices. Calzones, salads, sandwiches and Italian pastas round out the menu. The Famous Chicken offerings have a real following. And pecan pie and apple pie add the Southern touches we all love. Like most businesses in Southport, the restaurant slows down a bit in the winter. But their off-season is rather short – really just December through early February. The in-season starts early – at the end of February when the nuclear plant does their reactor refueling. “Every year they refuel one of the two reactors. They’ll bring a thousand or so people in, and once that gets started we get very busy. That’s the icing on the cake. Then when they leave, it’s Easter; the warmer months start and we see lots of people.”

KITCHEN DIY Pet Treats

Healthy options that taste great! STORY BY KASS FINCHER

As we ring in the New Year, many of us make resolutions that (fingers crossed) we hope to keep. Although our pets don’t participate in this annual rite, we should also keep their needs in mind as we set our goals for the year. Is Fido overweight? Does Fluffy have allergies? Despite your vet’s advice, your best friend doesn’t always have to forego treats to address his issues. There are commercially-made treats that you can find either online or in your local store, but it is possible to make simple homemade treats yourself that will keep your pet’s special needs in mind. Here are several options for treats you can make in your own kitchen. For overweight dogs, try these Beef Glazed Green Bean Dog Treats from DogKitchen.com. You can use a 1 ½ inch dog cookie cutter and you’ll yield 4 dozen treats! They will keep fresh in the refrigerator for 3 weeks; they’ll be good in the freezer for 6 months. Ingredients: • ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese, low or fat free • 3 1/2 cups whole wheat flour • 1/2 cup green beans, mashed • 1 cup beef broth, reduced sodium, plus 1/4 cup for glaze • 1/4 cup milk, low or fat free • 1 tbsp olive oil Additional Flour for Rolling Instructions: 1. Preheat oven to 350° F 2. Gently toss the cheddar cheese and the flour in a large bowl. Set aside.

3. In a small bowl, mash the green beans. 4. Stir in the broth, milk, and olive oil to the green bean mixture. 5. Make a well in the center of the cheese flour. 6. Pour in the green bean mixture and mix thoroughly. 7. Knead the dough in the bowl until combined. 8. Fold out onto a floured surface and continue to knead using extra flour. 9. Knead until you have a firm dough. 10. Roll out the dough to 1/4 inch thickness. Cut out preferred shapes. 11. Place the cut outs on a baking sheet that has been lightly sprayed with nonstick cooking spray. 12. Pour 1/4 cup of beef broth into a small bowl. 13. Using a pastry brush, lightly brush the broth onto the cut out cookies. 14. Bake for 30 minutes.

For your allergy-prone mutt, try these 4-Ingredient Peanut Butter Dog Cookies from WildernessFamilyNaturals.com. They are gluten-free and easy to make. The expeller-pressed coconut oil imparts a nutty, toasted flavor. Yield is about 30 cookies. Ingredients: • 3 cups gluten-free flour • ½ cup peanut butter – no salt or sugar added • 2 tablespons expeller-pressed coconut oil, softened • 1 cup water Instructions: 1.Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. 2.Mix the softened oil, peanut butter, and water in a mixing bowl. 3.Add the flour - blend 1 cup at a time and mix well. 4.Then knead into a firm dough. 5.Roll the dough to 1/4” thick on a lightly floured surface. 6.Use a cookie cutter to cut out cookies. A bone-shaped cutter is adorable. 7.Place on an ungreased cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. 8.Bake 15 to 20 minutes. 9.Cool completely before serving.

And for the third of our population who are cat people, you can’t go wrong with these Catnip Bites, from Petful.com. Catnip leaves contain an oil that can put many cats on a “high,” like psychoactive drugs for humans. Just hope Fluffy doesn’t roll around and act weirder than usual while enjoying these treats. Ingredients: • 1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour • 1 1/2 teaspoons organic catnip • 1/3 cup dry milk • 1/2 cup milk • 2 tablespoons melted butter • 1 tablespoon honey • 1 large egg

Instructions: 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. 2. Combine dry ingredients in mixing bowls. 3. Add wet ingredients and mix to form dough. 4. Roll out, adding more flour if needed, and cut into squares or small shapes. 5. Bake for approximately 20 minutes. 6. Cool completely. 7. Store in airtight container or freeze and thaw as needed.

HEALTH Fatty Liver Labs?

Leslie gives you everything you need to know about your test results. STORY BY: LESLIE RESCHLY, BSN, RN

Q

uestion: I had blood laboratory work done with my health physical and my doctor told me I had elevated liver tests and I needed further testing. The result was a diagnosis of fatty liver. What does this mean?

Answer: The liver is one of the larger organs of your body located on the right side of your abdomen up under the lower rib cage. Its main function is to detoxify the blood that runs through it but it provides many other functions as well. The liver produces factors that help with blood clotting, makes albumin and proteins, processes medicine and nutrients as well as waste prod-

ucts, aids in glucose production and stores fat, cholesterol and bile. Enzymes are used in cells of the body for chemical reactions. The presence of these enzymes in the bloodstream (detected on your blood test) indicates inflamed or injured liver cells. Typically, two different enzymes are measured; they are ALT or alanine transaminase and AST or aspartate

transaminase. AST is found in many areas of the body so an elevation is not necessarily specific to the liver. AST may be elevated with a muscle injury, for example. ALT is mostly in the liver therefore elevation is a sign of liver injury. Put together, these two enzymes represent liver tests or liver enzyme blood tests. Ranges of abnormal vary by laboratory so it is best to check what “normal” levels are specific to your elevation. Most cases of elevated liver enzymes are mild or temporary. The most common causes include: 1. Over the Counter medication use such as Tylenol or NSAID meds 2. Certain prescription medications including anti-seizure medications, antibiotics, cholesterol lowering drugs and some heart medications. 3. Hepatitis B or Hepatitis C 4. Alcohol abuse 5. Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease Other less common causes include: alcoholic hepatitis, celiac disease, viral infections, hemochromatosis (abnormal iron storage), mononucleosis infection, and toxic hepatitis from exposure to a poison. Diagnosis of the cause may require the additional testing that your physician ordered. A physical exam is necessary to discuss risk factors, assess medication and alcohol use as well as determine if your liver is enlarged. Additional blood tests may be ordered to determine if you have Hepatitis B or C. Please see previous article in the November 2017 issue for information on Hepatitis C. In addition, a liver ultrasound or liver CT may be ordered

to determine if there are identifiable causes to the elevation. Finally, a liver biopsy may be done. Liver disease known as Fatty Liver or nonalcoholic fatty liver is a very frequent cause of mild to moderate elevation of liver enzymes. This occurs in individuals who drink little to no alcohol and develops as a result of too much fat stored in the liver cells. This fat storage results in liver inflammation and could progress to scarring or severe damage to your liver. Research indicates this is the most common form of liver disease in the USA impacting 80-100 million Americans. Risk factors for fatty liver include obesity, diabetes as well as metabolic syndrome which is linked to increased abdominal fat, elevated Blood pressure, elevated triglyceride levels and an ineffective response to insulin resulting in high blood sugar levels. Treatment of elevated liver function tests is based on the cause. For example, stopping a medication that is causing damage may result in a return to normal levels. Avoidance of medications such as Tylenol or Alcohol, which stress the work of the liver, may be advised. In addition, for fatty liver, your physician may recommend healthy diet and exercise with moderate weight loss, blood pressure and cholesterol control. Expect frequent monitoring of your blood enzyme levels to detect improvement or changes. CHEERS Dog Labels

Don’t miss these holiday classic favorites STORY BY JEFF STITES

F

or this month’s Pet Issue, I figured I’d review some pet beers. Not beers you cuddle and love and call “George” mind you, but beers with a pet on the label or in the name. It seems there are very few, if any, beers named after cats or goldfish or ferrets or cockatiels or pot-bellied pigs (but how cool would a pot-bellied pig beer be?), so what we have is beers featuring man’s best friend, the dog. It stands to reason, I guess. Beer, like your dog, is always there for you, always loyal and true, and is happy to be by your side in good times and bad. Before I try to justify this any further, lets get to sampling some beer, shall we?

ELLIE’S BROWN ALE, AVERY BREWING CO. 5.5% ABV 28 IBU

The label says: Named after our beloved chocolate lab, this beautiful, deep russet brew is dominated by a chocolate

and brown sugar maltiness with hints of vanilla and nuts, producing a very smooth, well-balanced and quaffable brown ale. My take: First off, how funny is it that Word flags “maltiness” as a misspelling

CHEERS but not “quaffable”? But on to the beer! This is delicious. Ellie would be proud, I’m thinking. Without adding any actual chocolate to the mix, this ale has an unmistakable chocolate flavor that blends really well with the maltiness. The liquid is a deep, dark brown and it smells just as good as it tastes. Oh, and it gets extra points because the can is labeled “Lab Tested.” Get it?

OLD LEGHUMPER ROBUST PORTER, THIRSTY DOG BREWING COMPANY 5.8% ABV, 24 IBU

The label says: This robust porter is dark brown in color and full bodied with a malty sweet taste. Deep roasted, yet silky smooth! Two types of roasted malts, including roasted chocolate malt, give this beer its award-winning flavor. My take: This is similar to Ellie’s in its use of chocolate malts, and it carries the flavors off just as well. As a porter, Old Leghumper is more robust and a bit thicker than Ellie’s, but personally, I love that. The beer is as dark as the black lab on the label with just a hint of bitterness and lots of maltiness that stays with you long after the beer is gone. I love a beer with staying power!

WYNDRIDGE FARM BARN DOG CHOCOLATE VANILLA IMPERIAL PORTER 7% ABV 20 IBU

The label says: Come and get it old sport! From the windswept hills of Pennsylvania comes a farm-crafted chocolate imperial porter. Wyndridge Farms Barn Dog is a good-natured, hard-working porter for a refined palate. My take: The vanilla in this sweetens things up a bit, but maybe a bit too much. It’s not entirely unbalanced though and not at all a bad beer. For fans of chocolate porters, and I’m one of them, this is a good brew. The label explains that it uses Ghana cacoa nuts (so the chocolate in this is not just chocolatey tasting malt) and Madagascar vanilla beans. Want to know something about Madagascar vanilla beans? See, vanilla beans can be sourced from Tahiti, Mexico and Madagascar, but Madagascar produces the sweetest specimens. They are in high demand because of a resurgence in vanilla-flavored beverages and food. This is the best thing to happen to Madagascar since the island was home base to pirates preying on trade routes from Asia to Europe and the Americas, including one Captain

William Kidd. So there you go, beer and pirates in one article. You’re welcome.

THIRSTY DOG BREWING COMPANY SIBERIAN NIGHT IMPERIAL STOUT 9.7% ABV 58 IBU

The label says: Imperial Stouts are by far the “Grand Daddy” of all stouts. They are very, very dark and rich, with a deep-roasted, satisfying flavor. Siberian Night is made in this tradition. It is creamy and full-bodied with a complex character from generous amounts of roasted, toasted, and caramel malts. For those who demand flavor, this is the perfect libation. My take: It truly is full of flavor, but maybe too full for me. I love malty beers and am learning to appreciate hoppy beers, but malty and hoppy in one is a bit too much flavor (or too many flavors), I think. There’s too much going on for any one feature to be truly enjoyable. This beer doesn’t know if it’s chocolatey or bready or coffee or floral, because it’s all of these things in almost equal measure. I’m not saying it’s bad at all, as someone with a more sophisticated palette may find this beer one of the best ever. It’s just not the beer for me.

THIRSTY DOG BREWING COMPANY SCARLET O’HOPPY 6.3% ABV 60 IBU

The label says: This IPA invites you in with bright citrus notes that fall off into an earthy backdrop. My take: Scarlet O’Hoppy is a great representation of an American India Pale Ale. It’s very hop-forward. Actually, it’s the opposite of the above Imperial Stout as this brew is all about hops. And it keeps the flavor profile very simple as well. Hops can give beer a variety of flavors from citrus to pine to floral and this one sticks very much in the citrus realm. It works very well for what it is and I’m sure it will make anyone who finds a beer called “O’Hoppy” appealing very, very happy.

ART BEAT Pet Portraits

Caroline Quinn brings your pet to life on canvas STORY BY CARLA EDSTROM PHOTOS BY CAROLINE QUINN

I

have always loved animals and have continually had a pet or two or four in my family since I can remember. Being an animal lover and a closet cat whisperer, my family jokes that I must have a sign above my house that says Cats Welcome because I am always finding a cat that needs help. I have never gone to adopt a cat. They just show up.

Even as a child, stray cats would come to me. When I got married, it was no different, but when my husband really wanted to get a dog, off we went to see yellow lab puppies. Michael picked up the only girl pup and instantly fell in love. The breeder told us she was born on November14th, which is Michael’s birthday, so

of course we had to take her home. Two years later, I adopted Sally from the vet clinic I worked at. She was little red merle Australian Shepherd puppy with one blue eye someone found on the side of the road. So Lucy and Sally were our girls for almost 15 years when they both died within 3 months of each other. Being ut-

terly devastated after Sally died suddenly, I was presented a painting of my two girls that my dear friend and artist Katrina Fairbanks painted for me. It was one of the most amazing things anyone ever gave me and it hangs in our home and the girls will forever watch over us. Life long North Carolina resident and two-dimensional artist Caroline Quinn

understands the love and companionship of owning pets first hand. She has always been an animal lover and pet owner, and that affection is obvious in her watercolor pet portraits. Whether it’s a beloved family dog or cat, or a horse grazing out in a pasture, she amazingly captures the details and personality of the animal in each portrait. “I love drawing and painting animals especially horses,” she said. Pet portraits are her favorite subjects and she started painting them by accident. “My sister requested a portrait of her dog, then her daughter wanted one, then her daughter’s friends, and then from there it took off,” she explained. According to Quinn, she has always had pets but mostly cats. “When we moved to St. James, we had a sheltie who we loved dearly. He was very old and died a year after we moved. And we still have a horse, Jupiter,” she said. “He is in a horse retirement home in Pittsboro, NC where he gets great care.” Quinn said that since he is their pet they would care for him for the rest of his life. Her love and knowledge of horses is deep rooted, as she is an equine and horseracing enthusiast, which is the subject of many of her paintings. She also has over 20 years of horse mom experience. “Our daughter started riding at 6

ART BEAT “...But since I have been retired, the creative side of my brain has re-awakened, thank goodness!” and was a very serious hunter/jumper,” she said. “I miss the horse shows but I don’t miss getting up at 4 am!” Also a thoroughbred-racing fan, Quinn has visited many racetracks and thoroughbred farms first hand throughout Lexington, Kentucky. The paintings she does of horses are mostly from photographs she has taken, as well as her coastal landscape paintings. Quinn attended Davidson College for her undergraduate and UNC-Chapel Hill for her graduate degree. Her artistic talents immerged while she was attending Davidson College where she had studied studio art with Douglas Houchens. It was there that she was studied 19th century painting and Gothic architecture in France.

“I was very artistic. I loved drawing and painting,” said Quinn. But her focus shifted when her parents encouraged her to change her career path. So, she studied urban design at the School of City and Regional Planning at UNC, which eventually led to her career in Information Technology and Software Engineering. “My technical career edged out my creative side for 35 years. But since I have been retired, the creative side of my brain has re-awakened, thank goodness! I consider myself a true artist now so I guess you could say this is my second career.”

Southport Magazine 2016-2017 SOI Chamber Small Business of the Year Winner

Not only does she love painting pet portraits, Quinn also finds artistic inspiration in the beautiful coastal sunsets and the landscape we enjoy here in Brunswick County. “I don’t paint outside (yet) but I always have my iPhone,” she explained. That way she can take pictures and paint the scenes later. “I live on a large pond and some days I just sit and watch the beautiful birds (herons, egrets, ibises, ducks) all day. A resident of St. James, she is able to watch the beautiful wildlife daily and gather inspiration for her painting just sitting in her backyard. Quinn is thrilled to be back creating art since that was one of her goals for her retirement. I hope to see more of her beautiful work in the future. You can find her paintings at the Franklin Square Gallery in Southport and the Artisans Gallery in St. James at the marina. To commission a portrait from Quinn, you can contact her directly by email at horseshowma@gmail.com . Her website is http:// www.carolinequinnartist.com .
