ELCOME TO OUR ANNUAL PET EDITION! THE PHOTOS submitted by our readers, which we received late November and early December, brightened our day every time we checked the e-mail. Thank you for sending all the adorable pictures! Flip to pages 28 through 30 to check out the local dogs and cats. As Christmas 2013 came to a close, I did a lot of winter cleaning—making sure closets were organized and old clothes were sorted to be donated or consigned. I realized that many old blankets I had could be given to local animal shelters, which need tons of supplies just to get through each month. Of course they need food, treats and litter, but rescue organizations also require leashes, collars, toys, water and food bowls, grooming tools and pet beds. They also can use cleaning supplies, paper towels, and office supplies. On page 4 we've listed the shelters and organizations that service Brunswick County, along with contact information should you wish to donate supplies, money or your time. On pages 4 and 5, you can meet nine animals who are in need of a home. If you're not able to commit to a pet for a lifetime but can still open your home, consider fostering shelter animals! Each organization will be able to provide details on their foster programs if you give them a ring. I also had a chat with Dr. Alyssa Travis, a local veterinarian and owner of River Road Animal Hospital. She shared why she became a healer of animals, as well as answered a few questions on how we can take care of our pets between vet visits. Greg Ochipa, our Wealth columnist, also offers advice for pet owners—specifically for driving safely with pets as passengers. adoption round-up: Six local agencies work to find all pets a home

F

OR EVERY PET OWNER, THE bond between human and animal is strong. Despite the language barrier, we and our pets are able to communicate just through the tilt of a head and the perking of ears, or through a soft mew and a warm purr. We understand one another. After a long day, nothing welcomes us home better than the sight of an animal who has missed our companionship. Through the dedication of shelters and organizations all across the country, America has made great steps toward ending animal overpopulation and homelessness. Since 1970, the number of dogs and cats in homes has increased by about 1 billion animals, according to the Humane Society of the United States. Meanwhile, the number of dogs and cats euthanized annually has decreased from an estimated 20 million to 3 million. While the statistics are showing positive signs of growth, one must ask: If 2.7 million shelter animals are not being adopted each year, why is it that only about 30 percent of America's pets come from shelters and rescues? Certain breeds are desirable, of course, but many can be found through such rescue groups. My college roommate even adopted a purebred Papillon from New Hanover County's Animal Control. The pup's owner was evicted and she had to give up the dog; my friend was able to bring him to a safe and happy home. With all the reasons dogs, cats, and other animals become homeless—one only has to do a little search to rescue a new friend (at a much better price than buying from a breeder, I might add). If you cannot provide a home to an animal, please consider fostering one. Even a short slumber party at one person’s home can save a pet from being unnecessarily put to sleep. If fostering is not an option, I hope that you may donate—be it money, food, or supplies—or volunteer with one of the following organizations. Many of these not only run adoptions but also spay and neuter strays to prevent further population increase amongst homeless animals. Everything adds up, and everything helps.

BELLE: I am so happy that a PAWS PLACE volunteer found me. I don’t know how much longer I could have survived on my own. I was starving and had a raging infection in my mouth due to broken teeth and gum disease. So since my arrival, I had a total check up. It was determined that I needed to have surgery on my mouth to help get rid of the infection.Two surgeries later, I’m a happy camper and have gained 10 lbs.! In spite of all that I’ve been through, I love the fact that I am being taken care of and that people love me. I haven’t stopped wagging my tail since I got here. Because of my prior surgeries, we waited to have me spayed. By the time you read this, I will be ready for adoption. They also said that I am HW positive. I have already started the protocol to treat it. I love to run and I would need a family that would be willing to get me lots of exercise. Come on out to visit me, please!

I (HELEN) ran away from my neglectful owner and had been out on my own for quite a while. A very nice couple found me and took me home and started tending to my eyes that seemed infected. But they saw that I needed more help, so they took me to PAWS PLACE. Shortly afterward my “owner” came looking for me and he brought my sister with him. Ms. Nancy saw that we both needed help and was able to convince him to surrender us to Paws Place. We have been taken to an eye specialist who determined that we were sprayed in the eyes with some type of chemical. No one knows if it was deliberate or not.The good news is that we started getting treatment not long after it happened and things are looking pretty good (literally). Keller’s eyes were more damaged than mine, but the vet thinks he can get a good part of her sight back. Isn’t that great? We are so happy to be getting so much TLC and food and medical care! Keller and I are small beagles, about 18 lbs., and around 3-years-old.We’ve already had our shots and are HW negative, and also spayed. We are ready to go to a real home, where we will be loved. We would love to be adopted together—would you like two little love bugs?

HE NAME "B.B. KING" WILL resonate with the world for an eon. Its owner, now 88, has already proven himself to be the "King of the Blues." He's a master of the wailing guitar, and even though kids in generations to come may not know his exact sound, they will surely recognize his name. King's voice is like a scruffy street dog. Rough and grungy, it's sometimes mean and cold. But it's seen a lot of ache—or at least sings about it—and there is an omnipotent depth unparalleled by many artists of today. In blues, the instruments are what draws us in. For King, his guitar screams and cries in glorious vibrato as its strings are manipulated in maniacal, unpredictable ways. Like a ska singer, the blues guitar twists and bounds toward every direction; listeners cannot guess what the next note will be. Yet every movement is a beautiful stretch of the player's soul, and every sound makes a puppet of our hearts. In 1925, B.B. King was born in Mississippi. On street corners he busked—many nights in more than one town. In his early

20's, he hitchhiked to Memphis, TN, a city where blues and rock 'n' roll collided. Many great musicians were born in the area: Aretha Franklin, Isaac Hayes, Booker T. Jones, and more. Others, like King, succumb to the gravitational pull of the city's thriving music scene. W.C. Handy, the "Father of the Blues" relocated there in the early 1900s, helping solidify the city's hold

on such soulful tunes and paving the way for artists like King. In 1948, King performed on a popular West Memphis radio program, which helped him gain access to a broader audience and book more shows. By 1952, the musician had his first number-one hit, "Three O'Clock Blues." Four years later, King and his band toured 342 stops in one year alone, from small-town juke joints to symphony concert halls and universities. In the blues' heyday, King found fans most any place. Having recorded over 50 albums since his humble curbside start, King will continue to garner fans long after he leaves this earth. He is a member of the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award, and he's received honorary doctorates from six universities. A biography and an autobiography, titled "The Arrival of B.B. King" and "Blues All Around Me" respectively, stand as a testament to King's reign through 1996. Yet as he continues to tour an average of 250 concerts per year, one could suspect there is another lifetime of liner notes to be published again.

also reflected in the food. Both self-taught, Todd and Leonard are inspired by coastal cuisine from the Outer Banks to the West Indies. They bring to the menu a combination of local and traditional fares like Lowcountry shrimp and grits, Ocracoke crab cakes, and Brunswick clam soup (that’s without cream). The flavor of the south islands can be tasted in the Caribbean Grilled Grouper with a pineapple, mango and mint salsa, as well as in the Jamaican Jerk pork and wings. Leonard, as the executive chef, is joined by chef and kitchen manager, Renee Reed. Together they forge innovative dishes of seafood, steak, pork,

chicken, and pastas using fresh and local ingredients as much as possible. Best-selling dishes include fresh baby flounders and all-certified Angus beef. Popular fried seafood platters are also available. All of Turtle Island's desserts are made in-house by Todd; favorites are the Turtle Pie (chocolate, caramel and pecans) and the house staple: Key lime pie. Turtle Island is definitely a local's go-to eatery. Some of the staff have been with the restaurant since opening 12 years ago, contributing to the neighborhood feel. Nightly food and bar specials are also a draw. Todd's case in point: Wednesday night. “A couple of months after opening, we wanted to get people in to see the menu,” Todd explains. “So the middle of the week, hump night, became steamer night. It has been a huge success.” Reduced prices are instated for the steamed seafood: oysters (in season), clams, and shrimp. Frothy brews for a frosty season

I

'VE LONG FELT THAT WINTER in eastern North Carolina is a nearly unbearable season. No, we don't have blizzards—but that's half the problem for me. If it's going to be cold and precipitating, it might as well snow. And once the last bit of metallic confetti is swept up from New Year's celebration, there's nothing left to look forward to. We're over the honeymoon sensation of the first frost's cuddle with a cozy blanket and a cup of chili. Once December's done, what else is there? Well, reveling in craft beer's winter warmers gives folks—or, at least, me— something new to celebrate. Both sweet and spiced, dessert-inspired porters, stouts and ales alike invite novices to test out new brews. Coffee tastes abound, too, satisfying those who love a good cup of joe but don't want all the caffeine. Plus, twists on traditional brews—like a white IPA—offer an easy transition into spring's lighter craftbeer contributions. This January, curl up with a chilled mug of one of these brews.

Decadent Dark Chocolate Ale Atwater Brewery Detroit, Michigan ABV: 5.5% • IBU: 11 The first sip of this almost-black beer elicited a wide smile and an audible "Ooh!" from me, despite the fact I was home alone watching TV and my excitement wasn't immediately shared. I'm admittedly a chocoholic, and I believe anyone who is a fan of Hershey's will be smitten with this Atwater brew. It smells just like Yoo-hoo,

java aftertaste beckons another sip. Thunderstruck—a black brew with a thick, tan head—also gives off a slight aroma and flavor of hops for just the right harmony. Fireside Chat Winter Spiced Ale 21st Amendment Brewery San Francisco, California ABV: 7.9% • IBU: 45 I picked this ale up in a can, and the artwork is delightful: FDR is having a heart-to-heart with one of Santa's elves near a roaring fire. Poured in a glass, the brew is dark brown with a nice tan head and a malty aroma. The brewery reports starting the process with an English-style ale and adding seasonal spices in an experimental style until they got Fireside Chat just right. The result is a bold and spicy beer with nuances of nutmeg and cinnamon, along with a thicker, warmer mouthfeel than most ales. New Belgium turned out their new winter seasonal, Accumulation White IPA, for the first time in 2013. It's become one of my favorite brews! Photo by Bethany Turner

but the flavor profile is much richer—like hot cocoa with toasted marshmallows. Still, it offers a light mouthfeel for great drinkability, and it's not overly sweet. I'll be heading out for a six-pack of this Atwater goodie while it's still around. Thunderstruck Coffee Porter Highland Brewing Company Asheville, North Carolina ABV: 5.8% • IBU: 26 Highland is a renowned North Carolina brewer, founded in Asheville in 1994. Their robust Black Mocha Stout, available year-round, earned silver medals at the Great American Beer Festival and the World Beer Cup. But I wanted to give their winter seasonal, Thunderstruck, a try. The coffee porter proves to be another good offering from Highland. It's fullbodied with flavors of chocolate and malt swimming along with the coffee—which is actually organic and roasted near the brewery in Black Mountain, NC, at Dynamite Roasting Company. The fruits of Dynamite's labor can be tasted from the beginning to the end of each swallow. A

Accumulation White IPA New Belgium Brewing Fort Collins, Colorado ABV: 6.2% • IBU: 70 This is the first time New Belgium has produced Accumulation, a winter seasonal, and it became my favorite new beer of 2013. I have to admit that I've only recently accepted hoppy beers into my catalogue; thus the ones I'll drink must be well-done (namely Southern Tier's 2X IPA and Bell's Two-Hearted Ale). I won't just order an IPA to order an IPA. Familiar with Saranac's White IPA and understanding the beautiful marriage that can be had between bitter hops and sweet citrus wheats, I ventured to taste Accumulation. The beer pours hazy and light yellow with a billowing head. New Belgium employs four types of hops—Target, Centennial, Mosaic and Amarillo—so the bitterness is definitely there. However, thanks to the Pale and Wheat malts and Ale yeast, the bitterness is cut by beautiful, bright citrus. This marriage allows drinkers to discover the spicy and herbal qualities of hops without being turned off by bitter flavors. I recommend Accumulation especially to anyone who likes wheats and is looking to branch into IPA's—and to just about every beer enthusiast in general.

APPY 2014! AS ANOTHER January rolls in, so does the season for resolutions related to health, exercise and diet. Sometimes it can be hard to go from resolutions to reality—but I met two local individuals who committed in 2013 to make changes in their lifestyles that were very inspirational! Read on and perhaps their perseverance may embolden you to make any changes you desire this year, too.

ene Areno, age 51, was an avid surfer and athlete in younger years. Unfortunately, degenerative changes in his hip left him with pain leading to a sedentary lifestyle and weight gain. Gene tried the usual fad diets, often losing weight only to gain it back again. With the opening of the Brunswick Nature Park, Gene started mountain biking on the trails. "Every time I tried to exercise, it hurt," he explains. Finally, the pain and weight forced him to seek help for his joint problem. "Having a total hip replacement was a scary thought for me." He credits Dr. Walter Frueh, orthopedic surgeon at OrthoWilmington, for his words of encouragement toward letting Gene participate in activities he wanted to do. "Dr. Frueh gave me back my life; I thank him every time I ride my mountain bike because he is the reason for the change in my life," Gene expresses. "My life changed 180 degrees." Not only does Gene now ride the trails every day—including in semidarkness with a head lamp—he has made dietary changes to assist in losing 38 pounds thus far. "I used to eat lunch then grab a candy bar and soda

for a snack," he concedes. All this has changed, too, with Gene eating tuna, yogurt and vegetables in place of his old habits. "All I ever drink is water now," he reveals. Gene gave the following helpful hints to those struggling to achieve a regular exercise program. "You gotta find something that is fun," he says. "I cannot walk a treadmill, so I won't do it, but the adrenaline rush of biking keeps me going back every day." In addition, Gene has formed a group that often rides with him, which keeps him motivated. Kudos to you Gene Areno! Keep it up!

iane Salyer, owner of Southport Taffy and Fudge Factory, has also made some huge changes in her lifestyle this year. Despite open-

ing her candy business, she has managed to lose 30 pounds and has begun training for a 5K! I offer a huge "pat on the back" for being around candy all day and losing weight! Diane also tried multiple weight-loss programs over the years saying, "I can tell you everything you need to do to lose weight—but I didn't do it!" Her desire to get in shape was a motivational factor. In May, she began walking regularly with her daughter, resulting in a 10-pound weight loss over about two months. In July, she initiated a lifestyle change to avoid sugar and processed carbohydrates. She also made the change to rid her diet of all sugar substitutes and diet drinks, effectively losing a total of 30 pounds! In September, Diane started a Couch to 5k (C25K) program (also discussed previously in this column). This C25K program is available online at www. c25k.com and helps individuals to

AN'S BEST FRIEND LOVES to go for a ride in the car, but an enthusiastic nudge from a nose or a big tail wag can interfere with your driving. To keep yourself and your pet safe on the road, follow these precautions from Christina Selter, original founder of Bark Buckle UP, a pet travel safety research organization.

1. Take a test drive. Practice makes perfect, says Selter, and it’s important to gradually acquaint Fido and Fluffy with the sounds and motions of the open road. Start at home by putting your pet in its crate or on a harness. Later, put your pet in the car and drive around the block. The next time, drive a bit further. “Practicing makes your trip and your pet’s trip much more comfortable,” Selter explains. 2. Stay secure. Buckle pets up for their safety—and your family’s:

An airborne 60-pound pet becomes a 2,700-pound projectile at 35 mph. “Cats do best in carriers and crates secured by seat belts,” Selter details. Dogs can be restrained with a harness with a tether that works with the seat belt. Another reason to secure pets: In the event of an accident, a pet trying to protect its owner may bite first responders, delaying access to your vehicle. Or it may escape and cause a second accident. “And all of these acts are your responsibility,” Selter warns. 3. Keep a first-aid kit handy. A basic first-aid kit for humans can also be used for minor pet mishaps, Selter assures. You can buy a pre-made firstaid kit or build one with these essential supplies, such as antibiotic ointment, antiseptic wipes, bandages, cold packs, scissors and tweezers. 4. Boost comfort. Bring things that make your pet feel comfortable in

the car, such as a toy or blanket that smells like its bed at home. Plan to take regular breaks along the way. Also, bring a water bowl and food depending on how long you’ll be gone. “Keep pets on the same feeding schedule and give them the same food they’re used to,” says Selter. “If you vary their schedule or their food, they could get sick.” And remember; never leave your pet in a parked car where it might be exposed to extreme heat or cold. OR LAST YEAR'S PET EDITION, Dr. Alyssa Travis of River Road Animal Hospital answered a few questions about how to care for pets, along with veterinarians of Southport Animal Hospital. This year, we get to know Dr. Travis a little better as a local vet and Brunswick County citizen. Dr. Alyssa Travis (AT): I was unusual—most people who are vets have known it was what they wanted to do from birth! I was actually in the Air Force to start with. I was always the go-to person for animal questions. If someone found a dog or a cat, or if they had a weird behavior question, they'd always call me. I was at a picnic and was talking with someone and they said, "Geez, you should have been a vet." And that was it—the lightbulb came on. Like most vets, it's a lot about the love of animals and really enjoying the people who own them. For me it's also a lot about the medicine and the science. I love the challenge of the kinds of cases I get to see every day!

pain exam. We take a multi-modal approach that has been a huge success on the human side—using multiple medications and modalities to find the optimum combination. We're also thrilled to offer laser therapy for pain and other conditions and will be adding acupuncture late this spring. In addition to all the pain stuff, we do a lot of behavior work, intense skin and ear work, and we are really expanding our dentistry and ultrasound areas.

SM: When we spoke in our last Pet Edition, you mentioned folks exercising with their pets can keep the whole family healthy and happy. What are some of your favorite activities to do with your pets? AT: The big thing I do with my girls is agility. If you've never seen it, you're missing out, because it's a blast! It's basically running your dog through an obstacle course. They love it! Velma, my younger Dane, is still a little too crazy for doing any wheeled activities with, but Dafne and I do a lot of joring together. Usually I am on roller blades while I'm attached to her via a long leash-and-harness system. She doesn't really pull me, but she keeps me going at a pretty fast pace. We're experimenting with using a skateboard as well.

SM: Why did you select Southport as the location for your animal hospital? AT: I was practicing in Fayetteville and wanted to own my own hospital. There was no other option for me except the coast. I began looking in Brunswick County for purely economic reasons—it was among the top 20 fastest growing counties in the country at the time. But as almost everyone who lives here knows, one trip to Southport is enough to sell you on moving here. SM: Cats and dogs usually see their vets once per year. What are some good tasks—like teeth brushing, which you mentioned last Pet Edition—for "self-exams" at home that we can do to make sure our pets are in good health between visits? AT: That's a great question! Brushing teeth is one of the single easiest ways to keep the number-two health problem in dogs and cats at bay! Really looking at the teeth— which should be free from debris and breaks or cracks, and gums—which should be pink with no red areas—gives you so much information. Petting them is also huge (and liked a lot more than brushing!). Checking for lumps, bumps, or abnormal areas as you do your normal belly rub is a great way to keep tabs on things. Looking in ears, trimming nails, exercising with your pets, and remembering that some behavioral stuff—like throwing up in cats, lack of interest in exercise, clinginess, personality changes, urinating in the house—can be signs of medical problems and not just "normal" or "lazy" or "mad at me." The sooner we can figure it out, the better for everyone.

'Om Sweet Home on Bald Head Island marries coastal, modern and Asian styles

B

ALD HEAD ISLAND IS A JEWEL IN THE North Carolina coast that brings together people from all walks of life. It was once a Civil War fort; a refuge for Native Americans, then pirates and then river pilots; and even home to a produce farm. When it first became a true residency in the 1970s, there still was no electricity on the island. A handful of families became the "Generator Society," living on the crude oasis and on the same CB radio station. Their houses had names—perhaps as truck drivers would have nicknames—such as Neptune, Pilot House and Happy House. Today, Bald Head Island now hosts a few thousand homesites. Upon many lots rest gorgeously styled abodes, and their residents, while not all yearround, travel from many points on the globe to get a

taste of the saltwater marsh. One such home with a marsh view is at 4 Stede Bonnet Close, dubbed 'Om Sweet Home by its owners, Bob and Cheryl Preston. "They lived for a while in China and traveled extensively," Trisha Howarth of Bald Head Island Limited Real Estate says of the couple's time in Hong Kong and Shanghai. "Cheryl practices feng shui and she really enjoys the calming effect it can have. You can see this a lot through the house." 'Om Sweet Home is decidedly coastal in outward appearances, with its shake siding, thick white trim, and gargantuan windows built to take in all the views. Though as one enters the home, three styles merge into one. Naturally, coastal, but also modern—especially in the kitchen—and there are unique

elements of Asian design as well. Howarth describes entering the foyer as walking down a long hallway one would find in a movie, perhaps from a castle or an historic abbey. Though the ceiling is high, it's a lengthy room that seems somewhat closed off in comparison with the open floor plan of the main living area. Yet the foyer's purpose is directional. "You really get a sense that you're going somewhere," she describes. Indeed, as it opens to the most grandiose space in the house, flowing into the living room, dining room and kitchen. It's as if an ocean channel sends guests right to the main event, where a plank ceiling expands across all three rooms and bends as if it is the belly of a ship. Cheryl has a keen eye for large statement pieces,


front entrance many of which she's collected over the years. "She actually has art from monks hanging on the walls," Howarth reveals. "As an artist herself, the style of her works comes out in the home." A wooden screen takes up a good chunk of a kitchen wall, adding a bit of color to an otherwise white-and-silver room. A breakfast nook, cabinets and countertops, all bright white, give off a modern flair and blend beautifully with the glass backsplash. An astounding and unique over-the-range hood becomes the focal point of the professional-grade kitchen. "It's blended with the Bald Head experience," Howarth tells of the varying styles. "There are nice, dark hardwood floors and fireplaces, but the modern kitchen gives it an edge, and the traditional Eastern art gives a sense that it's peaceful." The home is actually split into two wings, Howarth describes, though from the outside it appears as one

foyer well-flowing home. "Two families could live there, and while they wouldn't have a complete kitchen to themselves, each would have their own living room," she explains. It could work well as a vacation home, or Howarth adds that although 'Om Sweet Home is a premium abode, it would work for a full family with children because of its spaciousness. Raising children there harkens back to Bald Head's Generator Society, when the playground for all kids was the sand and the surf. Today, that still rings true. The master bedroom on the first floor opens to a screen porch with a gas fireplace, as well as the infinity pool and hot tub. "The pool can be heated," Howarth notes. The pool seems to flow off into the marsh, as infinity pools do—but it truly adds to the complete immersion in nature which is reveled by Bald Head fans all around. The cable railing almost disappears

into the horizon, offering uninterrupted views from the deck. "Perhaps the crown jewel, though," Howarth begins, "is the skydeck on the top floor. It offers 360-degree views of all of Bald Head Island." Cable railing and glass are employed here, too, so the outlook is not disturbed. The home was designed by architect David Lisle and constructed by Steven Henson in 2008. Chris Lokey of North State Woodcraft supplied the cabinetry, wood, ceilings, and doors. In total, there are five bedrooms, six bathrooms, a loft/media room, a dumbwaiter, and three gas fireplaces. Calling All Party Animals: Throwing a birthday party for your pooch!

B

ECAUSE PEOPLE OFTEN view their pets as members of the family, throwing birthday parties for dogs has become an increasingly popular way to celebrate man's best friend. You can celebrate your dog’s actual birthday or the day of their adoption, all while having a tail-wagging good time. Here are some ideas to give your dog a super-fun birthday! Pick a date on or close to the date of your dog’s birthday. If you adopted your dog and you don't know the date of birth, make one up and stick to it! Or, if you remember the day you adopted, make it an "adopt-aversery!" Check your address book for friend's addresses—preferably friends who have dogs, too, as it will be a puppy play-date. Friends without dogs who enjoy your special birthday pup can join though, as well! Make invitations. You can order special "dog birthday" invitations or make your own creative ones with craft paper, ribbon, stickers, and/or stamps, and a little glue. Make sure you have your phone number or email on the invitations for RSVP-ing. You should, of course, have a nice, safe and dog-friendly place to plan your party. But where? Consider your yard. If you have a house with a yard, make sure to check fences for stability. Clean your yard out from any junk, and fence off any "doggie no-no" areas. If you don't have a yard, no problem! You can use your local park or dog park. If all of your friend's dogs are toilet trained, you could have an indoor party. This is especially useful in the winter. In warmer months, consider having your party at the beach! Most dogs absolutely love the beach, and it will be a lot of fun watching dogs bark at the waves! Make sure that animals are allowed at the beach, first, and check any local leash laws. Decorating the area will make the party much more fun! Draw paw prints leading to your door with sidewalk chalk. Then cut pet-appropriate shapes out of poster board (bones or fire hydrants) and hang them from the ceiling or from

trees if you're having the party outside. For food, the dogs will be happy with some dog treats, a small amount of kibble or perhaps just a piece of doggy birthday cake. Consider making a dog-friendly birthday cake by finding a recipe online! The human guests will get a kick out of dog-themed appetizers such as mini-hot dogs or chicken salad sandwiches cut into bone shapes with a cookie cutter. A human-friendly dessert is a plus, too, so everyone can share in the birthday-cake fun. You'll also need toys and games to keep your dogs occupied. These can be as simple as Frisbees and balls to play games of fetch, or they can be more elaborate. If there are several dogs in attendance, you could have a best dog trick contest. Or, let your canine guests play a game of "bobbing for biscuits," a spin on the popular "bobbing for apples" party game. Dogs can dive into a bucket of water to retrieve a tasty snack. Another option is to have the dogs and their humans participate in a matching-costume contest with prizes for the winners. Last but not least, don't forget your camera. You'll want to capture memories of your pooch's birthday celebration.
