ON THE COVER

O

f course the cover is Southport celebrating Independence Day, and inside you’ll find out all about the ways we can enjoy this year’s rather different festival. You’ll also see some history you might not have known. We loved putting this issue together, and thanks to the incredible support of our local businesses, this is the biggest issue so far this year! But my favorite part of this month’s work was taking my teenage niece Lindsey out to learn photography. Pay special attention to the ads for Southport Trading Company and All In Bloom, Lindsey took those photos! I am so proud. And I’m thankful to be able to share all the good things, with family and with all of you!

CURRENTS 4th Of July Fun 2020 It’s Going To Be Different, But Still Lots Of Fun During The 225th Festival STORY AND PHOTOS BY JEFFREY STITES

T

his is a bittersweet year for Southport’s 4th of July Festival. This will be the 225th year of the Festival, and this year also marks the 100th anniversary of women winning the right to vote nationwide. But this year’s celebrations will be very different due to restrictions put in place to mitigate the COVID-19 virus. We wonder what the residents of Southport in 1795 would think of Southport 2020. While they could certainly understand fighting a pandemic, the idea of moving the Festival into cyberspace would be incomprehensible to them. But that is exactly what the Festival Committee has planned, and it’s the very best the could be made of a bad situation. We will be able to share in many of our favorite festival traditions, on Facebook. The Facebook page @nc4thofjulyfestival will be home to all the fun, but if you miss the live events, you can catch up on the www.nc4thofjuly.com website. It won’t be the same as sharing these things in person and together, but this year has taught us that we can be together while remaining apart.

Here are all the events planned:

WEDNESDAY, JULY 1 Fireworks at the Oak Island Pier, 9 pm weather permitting This one isn’t virtual — these are going to be real, honest to goodness fireworks you can go see! While the fireworks are set off from the Oak Island Pier at the end of Womble Street, pretty much the length of the island’s beach strand is going to be a fine place for viewing. Remember we’re in the middle of a pandemic and crowds are not your friend. Parking is available in town lots and street rightsof-way (please keep tires off the road so traffic can flow). After the fireworks, Oak Island police will be on hand to help direct traffic off the island. Vacationer’s Vittles Program Connects Visitors To Local Farmers Through Rental Agencies STORY BY LISA P STITES

O

ne of the best things about traveling is experiencing local culture and local flavors. Visitors to our area have a new option to maximize buying local produce, thanks to Vacation Vittles. The USDA-sponsored program, led by NC State, gives local farmers a way to sell fresh produce to visitors. At a time when social distancing is important and some may not want to go to a crowded store on a weekend, fresh produce available at check-in is a great way for visitors to get settled in before heading out to the local farmers markets, produce stands and stores. Vacationers have the option to order produce when they book a vacation. Two rental agencies on Oak Island participate — Oak Island Accommodations and Margaret Rudd & Associates. This is the second year that Oak island Accommodations has participated, offering the service for Saturday pickups. “Oak Island Accommodations is thrilled to participate in the Vacation Vittles program again,” Marketing Manager/Chief Content Marketer Kristin Goode said. “Connecting local farmers with OIA guests is a natural partnership. It’s a convenient way for guests who wish to whip up soul-nourishing meals for their family and friends to pick up these goods while on vacation. We hope more guests will take advantage of this service and search out other products that are grown or made right here in southeastern North Carolina.” So far this year, more than 200 bags have been sold through the Oak Island rental agencies, according to Duarte B. Morais, PhD. Morais is Associate Professor of Equitable and Sustainable Tourism and a Specialist with NC Tourism Extension at North Carolina State University. Oak Island is the Vacation Supported Agriculture (VSA) program’s largest market, but the program is in place in all the Brunswick County beaches, Wrightsville Beach, Topsail Beach and the Outer Banks. Last year, vacationers to Oak island purchased 250 bags in all 12 weeks of the summer season, so Morais said they are off to a very good start this summer, even with a delayed rental season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “People

are seeking vacations that allow them to decompress from life’s stresses in relative safety, and pre-ordering bags of fresh produce emerges as a very COVID-19 compatible approach,” he said. Vacationers began ordering bags in May, he explained, even knowing that their vacation plans may not have not materialized. There would be no refund, and bags that were purchased but could not be delivered would be donated to unemployed local tourism service workers. “And vacationers bought the bags anyway,” he said. He credited efforts by agencies such as Oak Island Accommodations as contributing to this year’s strong sales. “I think they are doing this because they find that the VSA bags resonate very positively with their guests, because that this initiative brings meaningful benefits to local farmers and under-served youth, responsible for aggregating produce, and packaging and delivering bags, and because we collaborate with them in an efficient and smooth way,” Morais said. The program compiled feedback from more than 1,000 vacationers who participated last year, and the results were extremely positive about being able to support local farmers while using in-season, fresh produce. The produce now comes in insulated bags designed to keep everything as fresh as possible and protected during transit. Living The Dream Local Board Shop Shows How to Run a Business with Passion for the Community STORY AND PHOTOS BY COURTNEY MILLIRON

M

att Troetti, a born and bred Oak Island local, has turned his passion his career with his board shop, Never Ever Boards. He attributes his lifelong love for outdoor sports to his hometown. “I just turned 27. I grew up in the area the majority of my life,” he said. “But I’ve always really been interested in an outdoor scene, especially living by the beach. It really forces you to love the outdoors and get involved in outdoor sports, activities and adventure. Just the thrill of it all. That really harnessed my interest in skating and outdoor sports.” Never Ever Boards, which opened in May of 2018, sells everything from paddleboards, to skate boards, to clothing and accessories. When opening the shop, Matt learned that it was all about pacing yourself. “What I’ve learned more than anything is that it’s a series of steps. And collectively to reach any kind of goal, hitting those steps and benchmarks, you can do anything you want to do. So the goal was, I want to open a retail store, what do I have to do to make this happen?” he said. His entrepreneurial spirit drives his business, but his passion is what makes him enjoy the store. “What can I do that I’ll enjoy it, but won’t feel like I’m sacrificing these major parts of my life? I can do something where it would be more fun for me, and in a sense keep me young longer. There’s definitely a youthfulness to adventure sports,” Matt said.

veloping countries around the world?” From growing up in the area, Matt understands the needs of the local, younger generation as well. “A lot of kids will get in trouble here, and that all comes down to not having anything to do. Having the skate park open is keeping people togeth-

er and giving kids something positive to do,” he said. Realizing that need, the shop played a key role in expanding the Oak Island skate park hours and eliminating fees. “That was an effort between the local youth and ourselves and understanding the importance of the skate park for the community. It was a good key move for our business and what we stand for.” After encouraging people to

contact their council members and town staff, Matt addressed the issue at a town hall meeting. “It was really a watershed moment for me because there were so many people that were from the younger part of our community that were there to support it. They gave it to us as a Christmas gift, where they opened the park for free for the first time in 20 years with dawn til dusk hours. It was a huge win for us and the community.”

Perhaps the best part of Never Ever Boards is the owner’s enthusiasm for his local community and charity. Matt donates five percent of the store’s annual net profits to the non-profit organization Charity: Water. “I’ve really liked Charity: Water for a really long time. What’s the resource that’s most important? Water. And they give 100 percent of proceeds directly to providing clean, safe drinking water,” said Matt. “I thought that was huge. If I’m involved in water sports, why not have a charity that helps provide this resource to de8 Southport Magazine /July /July 2020 / www.SouthportMag.com

CURRENTS Looking around the store, you’ll also find products from other local businesses too. “Not only on a networking side and getting to know your fellow community and working with different local businesses on that level, but collaboration I think is key to having any type of successful business,” Matt said. “Because it’s a joint effort between these different businesses, where we’re able to combine marketing resources and efforts to make a larger goal happen. To bring all these things together and make a cool product for the customer, that’s what matters at the end of the day.” With his already burgeoning business, Matt has even more goals for the future. “Our numbers have been growing quite a bit. I would love to be able to go into production for our own products and get us into other shops, creating a stronger brand that would hopefully become its own line,” he said. Matt has treated the pandemic as his biggest lesson, “I’ve really learned about adapting and being ready to change. There’s always another opportunity, to not get stuck on ‘Oh I missed out on this,’ or kicking yourself because

you didn’t take advantage of something. Keeping that positive mindset and abundance mentality, there’s enough to go around for everybody.”

welcoming to everybody and that’s a core philosophy in our business. It’s important to be there for your people because you wouldn’t be there without them.”

At the end of the day, Matt’s goal for Never Ever Boards is to make people feel included. “What we really like to provide as an experience for someone in our store is to meet you at whatever level you’re at and make the process easy, guide you to pick what’s perfect for you and what you absolutely love. It can be a little overwhelming just starting out in these sports, because of how you might not be accepted,” he said. “Your willingness and desire to do it should be enough. It can just take someone a little longer to learn something, or you might not have the right set up. We want to provide what is perfect for you. We’re willing to help out kids, parents, grandparents, so we’re

Southport Sisters Spreading Good Cheer and Positivity STORY BY JEFFREY STITES

S

isters Barbara Sammons and Francine Menors moved to Southport together in 1995 and set about creating a business that allows them to bring a little joy into others’ lives. They call themselves the “Southport Sisters,’ and they reached out to us during the height of the COVID lockdown with a Southport Strong watercolor greeting card and an encouraging message. It was good timing, and it touched our hearts. We know a good story when we see one, so we spoke to Barbara about the sisters’ work and how they have taken a business that was based on in-person sales and craft events and moved it online.

What sort of art do you do? How would you normally be sharing it this time of year? What are you doing differently now?

be found in several local shops. I recently created an online store to showcase my cards and I also offer contactless delivery in our local area.

I am a watercolor artist and photographer, although I mainly work in watercolors at this time. I paint an original watercolor and then process it as a greeting card. All of the processing and printing work is done by me to ensure quality control. My sister, Francine Menor, is an acrylic artist specializing in hand painted children’s growth charts. We are known as the Southport Sisters. We are vendors at the Southport Summer Market, however, that market has been cancelled for this year. Our other craft shows have also been cancelled for this year, but some are going virtual. Our works can

Just recently I have added a new feature to my Online Store for my Watercolor Greeting Cards. It’s called “CardQuick.” It is my way of giving back to the community. Basically, someone goes to my online store, selects one card, adds a shipping name and address and at checkout they select the CardQuick option. They pay for the card and that is all. When an order is received, they are contacted for their personal message. I hand write the message, address the envelope using their return address information, add a stamp (my cost) and drop

it off at the post office. I send the purchaser a quick snap of how it all looks so they know what is being sent. I think it will be a nice feature for folks who can’t get out to shop or just run out of time.

What lessons have you learned from our current situation that will help you in the future? Just be kind to everyone. Have patience.

How did your life experience up to this point help you with the challenges we are facing? What

would you say to other artists, either advice or questions or both? My parents survived some very hard times and instilled in us the rules of survival ... always be prepared. We live very modest lives and feel we were as prepared as we could be. Painting and photography have been my savior on more than one occasion and it certainly has been these past few months. And learn, learn, learn. There is always something new to learn that will help grow your art. Many artists and photo processing firms are offering free online classes. Take advantage of them.

CURRENTS Were you already among a community of other artists? If so, how are you helping each other? Stay connected, even if it’s just an email to say “hi” or a call to check in. Share ideas, what works, what doesn’t work.

What has this experience taught you about your community? The role of art within our community? Of the role of art in our lives? My sister and I moved to Southport five years ago because of the arts community. Artists see the same world but their vision of how to interpret what they see is so varied. Sometimes it’s abstract, sometimes it’s realism. An artist creates from the heart. What better gift to give someone.

Have you taken advantage of social media or other technology to help share your work?

My sister and I each have our own websites that I manage, plus we have a combined website for the Southport Sisters. A few weeks ago I created and designed an online store for my watercolor greeting cards. We all are facing an uncertain future. No one can predict where we will be months from now. Until then, stay connected, send a note, write a letter, share a recipe, make a phone call, take a walk. Above all, be kind, be patient and stay well.

The Southport Garden Club, in collaboration with the Southport Beautification Committee, has installed a new garden at the Indian Trail Meeting Hall. A handful of people from both organizations worked together to formulate an overall design for the garden. Beautification Committee volunteer Tom Lombardi dug up the bed, laid the patio, and installed the border. Garden Club members Marybeth Hale, Kay Ross, Linda Earnhardt, Lynn Menches, and Shirley Snyder also helped prepare the beds and also planted the garden. Lombardi also installed the Peace Pole, which was creat-

Existing Ferns and False Solomon’s Seal from the original bed were also incorporated into the new design. Funds for this project were provided by the City.

Design Your Own Skateboard Deck STORY BY COURTNEY MILLIRON

ocal board shop Never Ever Boards and art studio Pescado y Amor are collaborating to present a skate deck design competition. Participants pick up skate kits from either location and paint them to submit for judging and prizes. Missy Ronquillo, owner of Pescado y Amor, was excited to team up with Matt Troetti, owner of Never Ever Boards, for this collaboration. “I actually called Matt, because I was doing similar DIY kits and I thought skateboards would be a cool idea. We’ve met before, but this is our first collaboration together,” Missy said.

The collaboration gives both businesses the opportunity to get to know their community better. “We’re going on our eleventh year, so I feel like everybody knows me but maybe they don’t. We usually do art classes. We do all different mediums,” she said. “Matt is really into the community aspect of it all and I agree with him, our community is great. So I think it would be cool to open up future events to more people.” Prizes for the competition are also from other local businesses. “A lot of local businesses have collaborated on this with us, giving gift cards and prizes. This is a hard time for small, local businesses and this a good time for us to work together and help each other and get the word out about each o t h e r, ” said Matt. After sellof their first 20 24 hours, they the contest to Submittals will sionally judged 9th; submisbe narrowed four finalists. missions will be in Pescado from July 11th 25th, when the vote for the

In this uncertainty of the pandemic, Missy has enjoyed seeing the creativity from locals through this competition. “It’s inspiring to see all the people that want to do it,” she said. “We’ll probably do more art competitions from here on out and use the space as more of a gallery. I love that idea of having openings and getting the public and community involved. Art in the community is really important and this is a good start for it.” You can check out the competition submissions starting July 11th at Pescado y Amor located at 6018 E. when conditions allow. Normally, the Market is open for business on the first and third Saturdays of the month, but for July, the dates are the 11th and 18th; the Market runs from 9 am to 2 pm. Follow BSL Neighbors Market on Facebook for more details.

STORY BY LISA P. STITES PHOTOS BY JEFFEREY STITES Local artisans and produce vendors have found a way to help support the community that supports them through their seasonal open-air market. The BSL Neighbors Market features produce, flowers and plants, homemade lotions and soaps and a variety of products to beautify your life and your home. On a recent market day, one of the organizers, Aleta Brosseau, explained that the $10 vendor fee from each Market goes to support a local nonprofit organization. Brosseau and husband Paul operate Paul’s Hand Turned Creations. Paul turns the wood for their various products, but is quick to praise Aleta’s skill in designing them. Aleta finds local beach glass, and uses it to create unique, colorful handles for ice cream scoops, pens, corkscrews and bottle toppers, letter openers, and more. The Market is in its second year, located on the lawn next to the Office Coffee and Wine Bar on Hwy 87 in Boiling Spring Lakes. Brosseau said she and co-organizer Julia McDowell-Grigg owner of Little Green Scenes, wanted a way to connect local artisans with local customers. “It’s good for people to get out and shop locally rather than just at Walmart,” Brosseau said. The Market started this season with fewer vendors, due to the space needed to allow social distancing, but will likely be back up to the full spread of 20 vendors

Imagine Your Story Reading Is Its Own Reward, But Brunswick County’s Libraries Are Sweetening The Deal STORY CONTRIBUTED BY BRUNSWICK COUNTY LIBRARIES

B

runswick County Library System is proud to launch its first virtual Kids Summer Reading Program for area children. The program’s theme—Imagine Your Story—encourages kids to take advantage of the summer season to explore new topics and ideas through reading to stay engaged and learn more about themselves and their interests in the process. “Even though our libraries are still closed to the public due to concerns about COVID-19, we are still available to our residents and are eager to offer this virtual program to our county’s young children and students,” said Nathan Phillips, Leland Library branch manager. “Our team has worked hard to make sure this program is still available this year, and we appreciate everyone’s support of the libraries during this time.” Like the traditional in-person program, kids of all ages are encouraged to read or be read to every day and report their minutes to qualify for prizes like books, craft kits, gift baskets, gift cards and an Amazon Kindle Fire. Parents are invited to register their

children now via the Library’s online registration form or by calling their library branch (see contacts below) to receive information about how to participate. “A team member from your library branch will be in touch with you to answer questions and send you reading logs for your child to track their reading minutes,” Phillips said. “Each library branch has different reading milestones and prizes, so be sure to check with them on their specific program details.” All Brunswick County children can participate regardless of whether they have a library card; however, individuals are encouraged to register for their free library card at any time. Contact your library branch to register for a library card virtually.

The Imagine Your Story Virtual Kids Summer Reading Program is sponsored by State Library of North Carolina and the four Friends of the Library groups in Brunswick County. Harper Library branch manager. “Within the first two days of offering this service back in mid-May, we had more than a 1,000 people use their library cards to reserve items. We’re definitely excited to see so many people embrace the opportunity to read and use their library.” All books must be returned in the book drops in front of the libraries. All returned books are cleaned and quarantined for 72 hours before becoming eligible for check out again. Additionally, there are several virtual services for eBooks available for library users. See links to these resources on the Library System’s main webpage at https://www.brunswickcountync.gov/library/ For additional questions, contact your library branch Monday through Friday from 9 am to 5 pm. Editor’s Note: For the past couple of months, we’ve been reading all about the virtual programs the libraries quickly implemented to continue providing a valuable service to our community. Celebrating Suffrage Southport Looks Back On 100 Years STORY BY JEFFREY STITES PHOTOS CONTRIBUTED

T

his year marks the 100th year since the passage of the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution recognizing women’s right to vote on a nationwide level. The Southport Historical Society will be helping celebrate with a video tribute on July 4th at 6 pm. You can catch the video live on the Festival Committee Facebook Live feed or find it afterwards on the Society’s website, https://www.southporthistoricalsociety.org. We spoke to Southport Historical Society Vice President Liz Fuller about Southport at the time of the passage of the 19th Amendment and how local women reacted to its passage.

Can you describe the Southport of 1920 in general? What would people of today recognize? What are the biggest differences? In 1920, Southport was the Brunswick County seat, housing the County Courthouse and the County Jail. With a population of approximately 1,600 people, it was the largest town in the county. Many residents made their living on the water. Today there is a lovely park along the river, but back then it would have been a hard-working waterfront. Menhaden fishing, in particular, was a thriving business. Strong odors from the fish factories would permeate the air when the wind was blowing inland. But the townspeople said they didn’t mind, since “that was just the smell of money.” During the recent world war, Southport had become a military town, supporting the 1,500 troops stationed at nearby Fort Caswell. The Army-Navy club and the Amuzu Theatre were popular places of entertainment. Like the rest of the country, Southport had just endured the worldwide flu pandemic. Unlike many towns in North Carolina, Southport had very few flu-related deaths. The city attributed its good fortune to a quarantine of military personnel, a shutdown of schools and churches, a reduction in business activities, and of course, its famous salubrious breezes. Southport had endured both the war

and the pandemic stone-cold sober. The city had gone dry in 1903, six years before North Carolina and 16 years before the country. Although, that’s not to say that a moonshine still or two couldn’t be found if you ventured to look.

Can you talk about the Southport Civic Club’s founding, early activities and how it changed in the early days of women’s suffrage? The Southport Woman’s Club was originally founded in 1909 as the Southport Civic Club. At the time there was a national Woman’s Club movement throughout the United States. Despite not having the vote, women were joining together to educate themselves and to address issues in their local communities. In Southport, women focused on improving the cleanliness and attractiveness of the city by promoting the use of trash barrels, hand-painting street signs, sewing curtains for the public school, and raising money to purchase the first street light, the first hearse, and the first benches for the Garrison lawn. They established the first library in the county, donating their own books to make up the collection. That library was the forerunner of the Harper library in Southport and the Brunswick County library system. The women held contests that engaged

COMMUNITY the community in planting gardens, cleaning up the cemetery and raising healthy children. They were very interested in politics, even traveling together by steamship to Wilmington to hear President Taft speak. They met regularly with the Southport Mayor and aldermen to discuss their ideas and concerns. All of that was just in the first ten years of the Club’s existence!

How did Southport compare to other cities in the early 20th century as women’s suffrage was becoming a big issue? The women of Southport didn’t march through the streets demanding the right to vote. However, when a visitor from the National Women’s Party came to the courthouse to speak about the Susan B. Anthony Amendment, it was standing-room-only with men and women in attendance. After the 19th Amendment was ratified, the Civic Club was very active in putting together a series of lectures by the Mayor and other political leaders so that women could Below: Liz Fuller in her 1920s finest

learn about their new civic duty of voting. They also went door to door to encourage women to register to vote.

Do we know who was the first Southport woman to register to vote? Anything about her? How quickly did the women of Southport embrace suffrage? The first woman to register to vote in Southport was also the first woman to register in all of Brunswick County. Her name was Anna Miller Davis. Her family owned and operated the popular Miller Hotel and Café in Southport. Her parents were German immigrants who had settled in Southport. After registering to vote, Anna participated in several educational programs put on for women by the Civic Club to explain their civic duty and to encourage voting. Anna’s descendants still live in Southport. In fact, Anna’s great-great-granddaughter, Evelyn Lee, participated in the Southport Historical Society’s video celebrating the 100th anniversary of women achieving the right to vote.

Can you speak to the experience of African American women in the area as women nationwide won the right to vote? The question of African American women voting was a controversial issue in North Carolina. The rights of African American men to vote in North Carolina had effectively been taken away in 1901 with the introduction of literacy tests and the Grandfather clause. There were those who were against giving women the right to vote because they thought it would also allow African American women to vote. There were also those who were in favor of giving women the right to vote because it would help swell the numbers of white people who could vote and provide a buffer if African Americans were able to vote again. The story of Anna Clemons of Southport illustrates the situation for African Americans in Brunswick County at that time. Anna was a courageous young woman who was very interested in pursuing her right to vote. She was a nurse who had worked with Dr. Dosher. She had also received recognition from the state of North Carolina for her work during the flu pandemic of 1918. She

was a property owner, a taxpayer, and a churchgoer. According to Anna herself, she was not an “agitator or race leader.” She stayed out of trouble and she did her best to live in peace. Anna was able to read and write. However, when she went to the courthouse to register to vote, she was turned down as not being literate enough. This was the same response received by Anna’s seven brothers, and every African American person she knew who had tried to register to vote in Brunswick County. After being turned down by the registrar, Anna wrote to the National Woman’s Party (NWP) in Washington, DC to see if there was any way that she could register to vote by mail. The NWP told her that she would have to be patient until they could get a federal oversight bill passed that would require states to allow equal access to voting. It was another 45 years before the Equal Voting Rights Act was passed in 1965. Unfortunately, Anna did not live to see that day. She passed away in 1956 at the age of 65. In her letters to the National Woman’s Party, Anna requested that they keep her name a secret. She was fearful of the repercussions if word got out and she was perceived as stirring up trouble. She

was afraid of being the victim of a “lawless mob.” It appears Anna kept her secret well hidden throughout her life. When the Southport Historical Society learned Anna’s identity, it was a surprise to her extended family still living here in Southport.

Battleship Masks

Brunswick Forest Sewing Group Helps Out Attraction Volunteers With PPE STORY AND PHOTOS CONTRIBUTED BY ERIC MENS

U

nder a cloudy but rain-free sky, the Brunswick Forest Stitchers visited the Battleship North Carolina Memorial in Wilmington to make a special presentation. The women’s group, known as the Shelmore Stitchers, from Leland’s Brunswick Forest community, made 80 personal use masks for the volunteers who work on the ship, and presented them to Michael Zalob, Chairman of the Battleship North Carolina Friends. Michael coordinates the work of community volunteers who devote their time and efforts to work at the ship in various capacities. The event brought the total number of masks delivered to the Battleship North Carolina to 105. A first batch of 25 masks, made by Nancy D’Abrosca and Marilyn O’Brien, was presented to the staff and gift shop workers on the day that the ship opened to the public. The Memorial had been closed as

a result of the COVID-19 restrictions on public gatherings. Eight women made the second batch of 80 at the request of Zalob. The Battleship North Carolina Friends chose the distinctive star-decorated red, white, and blue material so that the visiting public could distinguish the ship volunteers from others on board.

To ensure that the masks were identical, kits were assembled with directions for each of the eight women who had committed to making ten each. Upon completion, Nancy cleaned the masks and packaged them along with filters and instructions on how the wearers should care for their new masks.

Community Festival Memories Looking Back At The Fourth Of July STORY AND PHOTOS BY LISA P STITES

I

love a parade. I especially love our homegrown, full of fire trucks and pageant queens parades. Add a festival into the mix and the Stites family is all on board. In almost 26 years of living here, I have missed only one parade. In 1999, I decided it was too hot for my pregnant self to sit outside that long and I enjoyed the parade on television, from the comfort of my air conditioning. I have never skipped a festival — the food, music, and vendors just lure me in. This year would have been the first year that Jeffrey could have spent a lot of time with us, enjoying all the festival fun. At his previous job, it was his busiest time of year, and we only got to take him around at night or on weekends. This year, he could legitimately have called going to the festival work, and we would have had a great time. But there’s always next year, right? Since we’re not having the live festival this year, I thought I’d share some of my memories from previous years. I was fortunate enough to work as a reporter at The State Port Pilot, and it was a lot of fun during the festival. Well, maybe not that year there was accordion music wafting up from the stage by the river while I was trying to write. Otherwise, lots of us enjoyed it. We used to take turns “checking on the festival.” It was the biggest story in town, literally happening all around us, so of course we had to go see what was going on. And if checking on things included bringing back a funnel cake for your cubicle mates, that was just an added bonus. A few years, all of us Pilot kid reporters/section editors descended upon the Friends of the Library Book Sale. We went on the first day, which I think was supposed to be for members. I am not sure that any of us were actually members, but no one seemed to mind. We were newspaper people — of course we

wanted to buy books. When our son John was a toddler, Jeff and I were still active in the Jaycees. During the festival, we got to do a variety of Important Festival Duties. Mostly, we were volun-told to help out at the parade and do whatever the Chamber needed us to do, which was fine with us. One year, that meant Audra Rickman and I were stationed at the end of the parade. We were supposed to keep people marching and the floats rolling until they got past the nursing home, so the patients could see them. By the time the parade got to that point, however, it kind of fell apart and no one was listening to us. We ended up recruiting a Southport police officer everyone knew, and then things went much more smoothly. Another year, I was charged with lining up the dignitaries. I helped them attach signs to convertibles and then they wandered off to enjoy the festival before the parade stepped off. I was left to wander among the shade trees and enjoy the spectacle happening in the

next block. Adrian Iapalucci was supposed to be lining up the Shriners. You know, the guys with all the cute little cars they drive in formation? Adrian had a clipboard and a list, and tried valiantly to sort the Shriners into their appropriate spots. But they were having none of it. Finally, one of the more experienced Shriners told an exasperated Adrian that they had been lining up for that parade since before he was born and that they knew where and when to go. And they did. Left to their own devices, they fell in just when they were supposed to. We also had

a hot dog stand for the Jaycees a couple of years, I think. One year, we borrowed a dunking tank. The booth was very popular and it was a great fundraising year. For some reason, our spot was right in front of the jewelry store on the corner of Howe and Moore Streets. Whenever a ball went wide of the target and hit the store’s brick facade, it set the alarm off. After he had to reset the alarm several times, the store owner finally turned the alarm off, at least while we were there. He

COMMUNITY ended up just asking us to not break anything and left us alone. I was a little nervous when a Scandinavian baseball player who could throw at least a 70mph fastball came by. He stood in the middle of the road, though, still hit the target, and the windows were safe! Whew! John, meanwhile, was also enjoying the parade. His grandparents were usually in town, and they took John to the parade while I helped out. Once John joined scouts, he began riding in the parade, and then I watched from the sidelines. When he was in high school, he was a South Brunswick High School Marching Cougar, and I got a little shiver up my spine when he marched by playing patriotic music. I never stayed in the same spot for parade watching, so I have seen it with a variety of friends and family members and in different locations. One of my favorite spots was the lawn of St. Phillip’s Episcopal Church on Moore Street. I sat with my friend Elie Erick-

son. Her Dad, Jonathan Richmond, was in the men’s club, and they sold hot dogs. We put our chairs under the shade of one of those huge oaks, no longer needing to sit right up front and wave to our children. We were next to the coolers the men stored soft drinks in. They changed out who was working where as volunteers came and went, but I kept my spot. Before too long, I learned which cooler had the colas and which had waters, etc., and I helped out by directing the newbies to the right cooler. It was just the most relaxing time. It was a bit like being on a movie set — all the right colors and sounds, all the people in the parade or watching it — it’s no wonder Southport’s picturesque downtown has served as the backdrop for movie parades more than once. Last year, I wasn’t sure I wanted to go to the parade, or even

Outdoor living has never looked this good

the festival. I wasn’t sure I wanted to fight the heat or the crowds. John talked me into it, and I am so glad he did. He even played the guilt card, saying it was the last time he knew for sure that he would be home for the 4th. How could I refuse? We had a great time. That young man of ours — he has a good heart. And he has had to put up with a lot over the years. I’ve been writing about that kid and sharing stories about him since he was a 4-year-old about to start Kindergarten, and he’ll be 21 this year. I know he’s disappointed that we won’t get to shop in the park (well, maybe he won’t miss that so much), eat festival food and cheer on the marching band. But this mama is glad he’s coming home anyway. My festival experience has changed over the years, and that’s okay. That’s what life is, a series of transitions. I know we’ll still enjoy our time together around the 4th this year, talking and laughing about the fun we’ve had in years past, and making new memories we’ll cherish in the years to come

ART BEAT

Watercolor Magic

Spreading Art and Love In Difficult Times STORY BY CARLA EDSTROM

A

rt should connect people for generations. You may not like what it says, and it may change your point of view. Or it may instantly make you feel at home, bringing back a comforting memory. Being able to interpret an ordinary subject and present it artistically is a true gift. The watercolor artistry of Native North Carolinian Johnny Robertson does just that. His work instantly draws me in, and I feel peace and connection. His use of color and perspective mesmerizes me and makes me feel like I want to be a part of the scene. “What we need to do as artists is to show the world what they’re not seeing in life, to bring out an element that’s not readily noticeable or resilient,” said Robertson. “Sometimes I’ll see a photo that inspires me. A place, a time that’s being lost in history. I will take many photos of that area, edit them and work from the photo. I try to bring out the element in those photos that many people do not see,” he said. “Just painting a photo is not good enough and it’s not being very

artistic,” said Robertson. “I think the job of an artist is to interpret the photo in a way to display to the audience what they’re not seeing.” When Robertson started painting almost twenty years ago, he used acrylics, oils, and then pen and ink before he settled on watercolors. “I think I finally landed in watercolor because I love the translucency, transparency, and the beauty that it creates,” said Robertson. “After attending Serendipity Art School where I studied sketching, drawing, oil and acrylics, my instructor and dear good friend Jane Averell recommended watercolor. I never really appreciated the medium that much until I discovered some fantastic artists and learned what they were doing with this medium,” he said. “Watercolor is probably one of the more difficult mediums to work with, but once it’s mastered, it really has a mind of its own. It’s quite beautiful the way it blends and plays off the light and works so well with its neighbor. Watercolor is very environmentally friendly, and clean-up is easy. And the results are phenomenal.” Watercolor offers a wide variety of techniques, and Robertson has found his forte in pouring and negative painting. “It gives the smoothest consistent look abroad the entire spectrum,” he said. “In pouring, basically what you do is you study values of the color determining from light to dark using masking fluid to cover the lightest section. Continue to pour, then place more masking fluid over the area that you paint up to 12 - 16

layers. The end result is removing all of the masking fluid to reveal the beautiful prize beneath.” Robertson’s passion and inspiration are in the beauty of nature and in his faith. He excels at portraying the local historic architecture as well as beach life. “Life around me, the beauty of the sunsets, the autumn leaves, the crashing of the waves, the light snow on the expanse of a beautiful meadow. I feel like God has put me on the earth to bring these focal points in and project them back out to the world. There is so much negativity, stress, and strife in the world. And my main job is to bring calm, peace, tranquility, and most of all unity,” he said. “Art to me is so inspirational it’s my breath and it’s my life. It motivates me, it’s within my bloodstream and it gives me a reason to be here. We are not like a vacuum, but we are vessels on the Earth to absorb the beauty and to project the beauty. And at the same time, love the ones around us that we can share it with. I cannot go blindly through this world and not notice the beauty that’s all around me,” he said. “It’s like God telling me this is my art. Appreciate my art and produce your own.” Before moving to the Southport area, Robertson had visited Oak Island many times since childhood and still finds inspiration in all its beauty. “I fell in love with the area; the history, the arts, the people. I couldn’t be more excited to be here,” he said. “I have always visited Oak island and Southport for the past 20 or 30 years. Since landing in Southport, . . . my art has exploded more than ever before. It’s like God deliberately placed

me here to grow and that Southport was a well-tailored glove,” he said. You can see more of Robertson’s work at www.johnnysfineart.com. His artwork is currently being displayed at D&D automotive, Ahoy Donuts, and Moore Street Market and find him on Facebook.

A New Teen Scene

Publication Seeks To Mentor Teen Writers

A

s you might imagine, we are huge fans of the American tradition of Freedom of the Press. Our nation’s birth was helped along by the often incendiary writings of Thomas Paine. Her formation into a constitutional republic, the first modern nation ruled by laws rather than by men, was largely the result of the publication of the Federalist Papers. The idea that We the People have a voice independent of our government’s permission is one of the strongest foundations of our society.

STORY BY JEFFREY STITES We, Lisa and myself, publishers of this magazine, were blessed with many mentors that helped us develop our own voices. From our high school newspaper advisor to college journalism professors to the journalists in our community, we were influenced, taught and guided until we were able to own our own publications. We now have our own public voice. That is a powerful thing. Helping the next generation of journalists and storytellers get to the point where they too can hold that power is important. Our society needs many voices. Teen Scene, Inc, a new area non-profit, is helping to find and develop these voices.

COMMUNITY I started this effort while teaching high school and college Political Science in Anniston, Alabama. It is an outgrowth of my own insecurities about my writing skills and how that affected my professional career. I started the paper originally in 2004, and it was nominated by the local Chamber of Commerce for “Business of the Year” the first year. Because of a multiyear battle with cancer, I had to close it down. Now that my cancer seems to be in check, at least for the last couple of years, I thought I would give it another chance. I moved to Leland in 2016 to be nearer my first-born grandchild. In May, my business partner, Eric Mens, and I started publishing a monthly paper for creative adult writers in the Cape Fear area called Cape Fear Voices. It has been well received in the community so far. We have been trying to reach out to schools, homeschools and parents to recruit teens for the Teen Scene. Because of the current issues with COVID-19, that has not been an easy task.

What is your background? I have a Masters in Legislative Affairs from The George Washington University and worked nine years as a research assistant on the U. S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations while finishing undergraduate and graduate studies. As mentioned, I have also taught high school and college and have done a great deal of one-on-one tutoring in the past. Most recently in the Leland area, I put together a trip in 2018 to take 45 veterans and family members to Washington to visit the White House, Capitol Hill, and the monuments. In 2019, I founded, and am now the Commander of, the new VFW Post 12196 in Leland. I am also the President elect of the North Brunswick Kiwanis Club for 20202021. Two months ago, Eric and I also published a small book about Alex Moskowitz of Supply, NC. Alex is a 97-year-old WWII veteran who was one of the veterans who went on the DC trip with us.

Teen Scene is aimed at teens — do you have a specific age or grade range you are looking to work with?

plans, writing, editing, layout, design, and production of the paper. With some success we will also offer scholarships for those who do their part to make the effort successful. One of our Advisory Board Members is Elizabeth Wassum, the Executive Director of the Brunswick Community College Foundation. With her assistance, we hope to build a strong relationship with the university that will be beneficial to the College and our student writers.

Do you have a specific publication date you are working towards? We currently publish Cape Fear Voices on the first of each month. Once we get the Teen Scene going, it will most likely be published the same day each month. Our cut-off for submissions to Cape Fear Voices is the 15th of each month. That gives us time to review each article to make sure it is in line with our mission which is non-political and non-issue oriented content. It is meant to be a “feel good” piece for creative minds to publish their work. Win

Oak Island Hot Dog Shop Has New Owner STORY AND PHOTOS BY KASS FINCHER

W

hen Joe Doppes purchased Bob’s Dogs on Oak Island last year, he decided to leave the name as is, wanting to reassure regular customers that things would remain pretty much the same. “You don’t want people to think you’re going to change everything,” he explains. “The only downside is people are asking where is Bob or if I am Bob. I’m not.” The restaurant was established by Bob Kiser back in 2010. Doppes has reduced the menu just a bit to focus on the best sellers and still enable people to get in and out quickly. Having moved to Oak Island from Chicago two years ago, the new owner brings a wealth of experience in the food industry. “I’ve been in the restaurant business for over 40 years, for the most part in fine dining,” he says. “I owned several restaurants in the Chicago area

-Italian, French and others. I’m a chef by trade. I graduated from the Culinary Institute in 1983. I eventually got to the point where I decided to sell the business and move down here. I didn’t want to stay in fine dining, though. I’d always said that if I retired I’d do a hot dog place and that’s where I am. People love hot dogs!” But they’re not just your average dog. Doppes’ motto - “if it ain’t broke don’t

Joe “No I’m Not Bob” Doppes, owner of Bob’s Dogs, enjoys one of his famous hot dogs

fix it, but make it better” - describes his approach to the menu. The ingredients are fresh, and several options offer a different twist on the typical. The Parrot Dog offers Jamaican relish or kraut. The Island Dog comes with homemade mango salsa. But the most popular is clearly the Oak Island Dog with chili, onions and house slaw. The Cheese Dog in Paradise is a fave too, coming loaded with chili and shredded cheese. The restaurant also offers turkey and sausage dogs, burgers and sandwiches. In the winter, they offer the popular Meat Loaf Sandwich. Doppes is also adding some new items to appeal to people who have relocated here, to give them something they can relate to. “I have an Italian pork sandwich,” he explains. “We roast pork with a dry rub for eight hours, then we put it on an Ital46 Southport Magazine /July /July 2020 / www.SouthportMag.com

ian hoagie with provolone cheese and spinach.” Bob’s also has some wonderful cookies and floats. The Macadamia Key Lime cookie sandwich has a housebaked macadamia nut and white cookies chocolate filled with key lime icing. The Chocolate Chip is house-baked with chocolate icing. You can also relive your youngster days with a soda and vanilla ice cream float. And Bob’s customers rave about the fresh-squeezed lemonade and orangeade. When we talked with Doppes, our community was in the midst of the COVID-19 shutdown, and he was only able to offer takeout. With the app “Toast,” he was able to make the ordering and payment process easy for his customers. “A lot of our younger customers really like using it,” he explains. “It’s user friendly; you can order and pay, then all you have to do is come

SAVOR and pick it up. Makes it more efficient for us too.” Now Bob’s is able to offer both indoor and outside seating at 1/2 capacity, but the Toast app is still available for your to-go orders. Despite the uncertainty around the shutdown, Doppes is hopeful about the future. “The takeout saved us,” he

says. Doppes says he was concerned about business when people were not able to go out on the beach, as that’s when he gets the most customers. But he says even then, he was hopeful for the future. “I’m hopeful. Being a business owner, you always have to be looking forward.

I think after all this, people will be ready to get out and do things that they haven’t been able to do for awhile. That’s what we’re looking for soon.” I think we would all agree with that. Visit Bob’s Dogs soon and get your awesome dog, island style or however you like it best.

Save Your Back, Build Your Core These Exercises Have Your Back!

STORY BY BRIAN TULLY, MS

I

n the short term, you may be aiming for lower body fat or better strength, but over the course of the rest of your life, you ultimately want to just keep moving and doing the things that you love. And when it comes to active longevity, a resilient core is imperative. Building your core will allow you to improve any and all life activities. When it comes to research on the core and lower-back rehabilitation protocols, Stuart McGill, Ph.D., has spent the past 30-plus years at the University of Waterloo studying spinal biomechanics. McGill has said that having a stable spine with core stiffness and muscle endurance

helps protect against low-back pain and enhance performance. After hundreds of clinical studies, the endless list of core exercises was narrowed down into the three that consistently proved superior for developing core stiffness and endurance: the curl-up, the side

RAINWATER HARDWOOD FLOORING llc

bridge and the bird dog. These three exercises demonstrated the ability to spare the spine from damaging forces while also building muscular stability and control, as well as long-term back health. The core’s primary function is not as a flexor (think crunches) but rather as a stabilizer, allowing you to resist unwanted movement in order to protect your spine. For example, a stable core helps you regain balance if you trip and enables you to stay upright and straight when carrying a load on one side. Core stability is also important when lifting moderate to heavy weighted items and improves your ability to change directions quickly, as well as to accelerate and decelerate. Bracing the Core Learning how to brace your core takes practice. It requires all the muscles that support your trunk to engage in order to stabilize your spine, and instead of drawing things in, you’re somewhat pushing things out: Imagine you were getting ready Houdini-like to take a punch to the gut. You would contract all the muscles around your torso — even your pelvic floor — to “stiffen up.” In this position, you should feel very strong and stable — able to resist a strong gust of wind or a shove from any direction — but you should still be able to breathe comfortably.

Exercise Curl-Up

Side Bridges Bird Dog

You can practice leveling up your brace like a dimmer switch, starting with a mild, then a medium and then a hard brace. This also goes for practicing the McGill Big 3, each of which should begin with a proper brace. General Guidelines for Implementing the Big 3 •Perform this routine as a stand-alone core building session or as a pre-workout warm-up. •Begin with the Level 1 version of each exercise and perform 3 sets of each exercise with a descending rep format of 6/4/2 with each progressive round. See chart below of beginning rep and set scheme layout. •As you get stronger, gradually add reps to your sets until you can do 12/10/8 reps for the respective 3 rounds with good form and control. Then move up to the next Level of the exercise and start over with the 6/4/2 rep sequence. •Perform each exercise slowly, with control and proper bracing. Hold each rep for 8-10 seconds. •When performing the side bridge and bird dog, complete all reps on one side before switching to the other side. •Rest 20 seconds between each set.

3. Bird Dog

Doing the Big 3

NOTE: if you currently have a back injury, or you have any physical restrictions that could be made worse by physical activity, please consult your doctor first.

1. Curl-Up

Level 1: Lie faceup with one knee bent, foot flat on the floor, and the other leg extended straight. Place both hands underneath your lower back, then brace your abs and lift your head and shoulders 1 to 2 inches off the ground. This is a very small motion, flexing from the thoracic spine (upper back) just enough to engage your rectus abdominis. Hold 8 to 10 seconds, then return to the start. Switch legs halfway through the set. TIP: To help maintain a neutral spine and protect your back, use your hands underneath as sensors: If your back is flattening out, you’re lifting too high. Reposition yourself and make the movement smaller.

2. Side Bridge

Level 1: Lie on your side with your elbow underneath your shoulder, your knees bent 90 degrees and stacked, and your hips sitting slightly behind you. Place your free hand on your hip, brace your core, and use your glutes to extend your hips and press them forward — not upward. Your body should naturally come into a straight position from your shoulder to your knee. Hold for 8 to 10 seconds, then hinge at your hips to lower to the floor, touch down lightly and repeat.

Level 1: Begin on all fours with your hands directly underneath your shoulders and your knees directly underneath your hips. Brace your core and then make a fist with your right hand, retract your shoulder blade and slowly extend your right arm and left leg away from each other until they are parallel with the floor. Flex your foot and press your heel rearward to engage your glutes and hold for 8 to 10 seconds. Return to the start without touching down — “sweeping the floor” — and go right into the next rep. Do all the reps on one side and then switch.

Notice the description of each exercise begins with words “Level 1.” These are the starting point. You should slowly work through mastering these exercises and increasing the reps following the guidelines. Once you are able to perform 3 rounds, as prescribed, at a rep count of 12/10/8, then you are ready to move to Level 2…and then ultimately Level 3. If you believe you have mastered Level 1 of the Big 3 and you are ready to try the next level, email me at Brian@BetterTogetherFitness.com and I will send the details for Level 2. If you have any questions or other thoughts to share, I would love to hear from you! Even though we are all separated right now, we are still Better Together.
