ON THE COVER
Military Ties Bed & Breakfast - The Captain Newton’s Inn (c.1886) on Moore Street in Southport graces the cover this month; not only because of the beautiful display of Patriotism, but a strong connection to a military past. Owner Lisa Fosbury (left) holds the flag from the Civil War that belonged to her Great-Great Grandfather, Silas Harris. She comes from a long line of Veterans and one of the reasons she loves to display the flags. Her father (pictured below) was in the Korean War, her uncle was also a War Veteran.

CURRENTS Meet Your Mayor!
Without being too political, here’s a fun way to get to know your local Mayor STORY AND PHOTOS BY AMI BROWN
W
e decided it was about time to include some politics into the Southport Magazine, Southport Magazine Style that is! No boring stuff, just ten fun questions each Mayor could answer. We contacted our five local Mayors of Southport, Oak Island, Boiling Spring Lakes, Caswell Beach, and Saint James. Each town has a separate council and elected officials. We hope you enjoy this article, and remember when you see your mayor, make sure to thank them. They have a hard job and they all are doing it pretty well.
THANKS MAYORS!

Suffolk County, North Carolina. 2. HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED IN NORTH CAROLINA?
All my life, except for three years when I was stationed in the military. 3. WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB IN POLITICS?
I’m not sure if you can call it politics, but I was a law enforcement officer and then a State Trooper.
4. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE LOCAL FOOD AND WHY?
5. DO YOU HAVE A PET? IF SO, PLEASE TELL US ABOUT THEM.
I have a German Shephard named Sugar Bear. She’s a rescue dog. She was supposed to be a police dog, but when they tested her, she was afraid of loud noises, like gun shots. So a retired police officer adopted a retired police dog. 6. NAME SOMETHING INTERESTING ABOUT YOURSELF THAT PEOPLE MAY NOT KNOW? (A HIDDEN TALENT OR SKILL MAYBE?)
I used to play the guitar, the banjo and the piano. But I don’t play much anymore.. that was a long time ago.
7. NAME ONE THING THAT YOU HAVE DONE DURING YOUR TERM YOU ARE MOST PROUD OF.
There have been several projects, departments working together and really getting things done. 8. WHAT DOES “COMMUNITY” MEAN TO YOU?
Community is recognizing tradition and working together to bring together the past and the present for the greater benefit of our citizens. 9. WHAT HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE OR SURPRISE THAT YOU HAVE ENCOUNTERED DURING
YOUR TERM AS MAYOR?
The biggest surprise is the number of community volunteers that this city has. We couldn’t get all these projects complete without the help of our amazing volunteers and people willing to help. 10. IN ONE WORD, PLEASE DESCRIBE YOUR BEST ASSET OR STRENGTH.
I consider myself a Mayor of the People. I have an open door poilicy and anyone can come talk to me about our city. I have a Mayor’s Day each month where my door is open.

Mayor Becky Dus Town of St. James Elected in 2013 “Community is the people living here with us, and our common and diverse interests and efforts.” Mayor Becky Dus
1. WHERE WERE YOU BORN?
I was born in Akron, Ohio but grew up in SE Ohio near the river. 2. HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED IN NORTH CAROLINA?
We moved here in 2002, so it will be 15 years in September.
3. WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB IN POLITICS?
I was elected to town council in 2009, nothing before that.
4. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE LOCAL FOOD AND WHY?
Shrimp and grits – I love the flavors of the shrimp and bacon and parmesan cheese and the texture of the grits. 5. DO YOU HAVE A PET? IF SO, PLEASE TELL US ABOUT THEM.
I have had one canary, one lizard, one snake and many cats and dogs over the years (at one point we had 2 dogs and 10 cats), but I’ve recovered now and have just figurines, stuffed animals, etc. 6. NAME SOMETHING INTERESTING ABOUT YOURSELF THAT PEOPLE MAY NOT KNOW? (A HIDDEN TALENT OR SKILL MAYBE?)
No special talents that I can think of, although I do like to quilt and I do it by hand so it takes forever (so maybe that’s not really a talent), but I love to hike the national parks, especially out west. 7. NAME ONE THING THAT YOU HAVE DONE DURING YOUR TERM YOU ARE MOST PROUD OF.
We opened Maxwell Drive in March, a project that started a few years before I came on council in 2009.
FAIR 8. WHAT DOES “COMMUNITY” MEAN TO YOU?
Community is the people living here with us, and our common and diverse interests and efforts. Community changes depending on what the interest is, whether it centers around a personal interest like gardening or supports a larger cause that benefits the entire local community, like Communities in Schools. 9. WHAT HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE OR SURPRISE THAT YOU HAVE ENCOUNTERED DURING YOUR TERM AS MAYOR?
Southport Magazine 2016-2017 SOI Chamber Small Business of the Year Winner
Probably the biggest surprise has been the huge number of people willing to volunteer their time and energy to help the town and the surrounding region, although I’ve lived here long enough that it really shouldn’t be surprise. The biggest challenge has been trying to understand some points of view about different issues and trying to not dismiss things/opinions/objections too quickly. 10. IN ONE WORD, PLEASE DESCRIBE YOUR BEST ASSET OR STRENGTH.
I asked my husband, but I didn’t like his answer – something about being stubborn or persistent – so I polled some of the staff. They said I’m fair.

Surviving Summer in Style! Here’s the scoop from Staycation to Souvenirs to Sandy Beach
STORY BY LISA STITES, PHOTOS BY LISA & JOHN STITES
S
ummer is all about the sun and the surf and enjoying our favorite reasons for living here. We live for these days, when we can hop on a boat, stroll along the Southport waterfront, enjoy a picnic by a lake in Boiling Spring Lakes, or play in the ocean at Oak Island.
Whether you’re taking a staycation, have friends and family visiting or you’re hitting the road for an actual vacation, we’ve got you covered. We searched some of our local stores for this season’s must haves. Can shopping be considered work? These are our faves this year, and we hope you love them too. The best part is, we have only scratched the surface. There are plenty of eclectic shops with unique gifts such as pretty parasols and crab plates -- and who doesn’t need a crab plate -- and summer necessities such as widebrimmed hats and flip flops.
I visited Southport Trading Co. and Ocean Outfitters in Southport, and Strands Outfitters, Tidal Merchant and Color Me Carolina in Oak Island and found all these great Summer essentials!
Colorful Summer Tops!
You can never have too many pairs of shades.
TO THE BEACH
We’ll start with our travel items. You’ve got the basics covered with suitcases, shorts and tees. But how about a new pretty dress and a stylish lunch cooler for the car? We live at the coast, with the sea, river and lakes everywhere. But when we need a change of scenery, we can still take some of the coastal culture with us. Our local merchants have a great selection of chic weekender bags, which can also serve as your new beach bag for summer. Grab a new travel mug, Yeti of course, since it is all the rage, and some new shades and you’re ready for the road less traveled.
Bright lunch coolers are great for kids and picnics.

It seems during the summer months, we become very popular with our friends and family from other places, and everyone wants to come see us. We love playing host in our hometowns, and our stores are prepared for just this phenomenon. The standard beach selections are everywhere. Shirts, beach towels, hats and anything labeled with one of our town names – everything your visitors need to prove they made it to the beach this year or that you need to take to the people you visit this summer. Be on the lookout for something different though too, such as an octopus throw pillow, a metal sea turtle necklace pendant or a mermaid painting. And above all else, happy shopping! Mermaid art is quirky and the perfect gift

Let’s review our beach day checklist. Chair, towel, water or other beverage cup, sunscreen, beach toys, and a bag to carry it all there. Please don’t forget the most important thing – some sunscreen! There are so many styles, colors and sizes to choose from when it comes to coolers and travel mugs. Glass containers aren’t allowed on the beach, so it makes sense to take along your favorite summer beverages in a mug. Some of us have lived here long enough to be beyond the point of taking a bag of chips and a PB&J for a day at the beach. If you’re taking pasta salad and cucumber finger sandwiches, which we do sometimes, you’ll definitely want a good cooler to keep those foods nice and chilled. Pick up some new beach balls, skim boards or even a surfboard if you’re up for trying something a little more athletic.
Plastic YETI’s for the beach will keep you hydrated all Summer long.
Don’t forget to bring some fun for all ages with these water balls.
Nautical anchors and blue checks complete any beach-goers outfit. These bags are perfect for all your beachy things.
All heads will turn when you walk in with this hat and bag combo. May I say... Pretty Woman!

BIZ Q & A The Art of Home Sales Southport’s Dream Team: Landmark-Sotheby and Yost & Yost BY: LESLIE FOSTER
W
hen is an art gallery also a real estate office? When Sotheby’s opened its doors in Southport last year, that was exactly the intention of their brand. Wander in to view the art and you also have the opportunity to speak with Renee and Thom Yost who manage Sotheby’s portfolio of homes in our area. It’s a natural fit when one stops to think about it--- Sotheby’s long known as a premier Art Auction House placed a real estate office into a jewel box of an art gallery! Genius, I’d say.
1. Our Marketplace has numerous real estate companies, what led Sotheby’s to join the crowd?
Sotheby’s represents a global network of home buyers and sellers and it is only natural that they would want to include our beautiful region in their catalog of properties. After all, Southport was Coastal Living’s Happiest Seaside Town in America! Landmark was one of the first companies along our coastal region to be asked by Sotheby’s to join them. For our owners it was an easy decision as Southport is a beautiful coastal town full of Southern charm and a rich history. Most of all, Southport has a truly thriving art community which fits perfectly with the Sotheby’s brand. The concept Landmark thought would best engage our community is an office that is essentially also an art gallery. Southport has a truly walkable downtown area and the office/gallery concept invites people into our office to view beautiful artwork and at the same time connect with Sotheby’s International brand for their Real Estate needs. The connection between Art and Home is one of the defining elements of the Sotheby’s Brand. It was exciting to leverage our brand by having this concept to not only meet our clients but also the Southport community. I am glad to have this opportunity to invite all to stop in and visit us – even if you are not selling or purchasing, stop in if you are downtown!
2. Sotheby’s is known for selling premier properties around the world. Is that a pre-requisite for listing with you?
Absolutely not. Thom and I have been “Yost & Yost” working with owners and buyers for over a decade in this area. Being with the Sotheby’s brand brings exposure that goes beyond what we could offer. Whether you are selling a lot, a beach bungalow or a million dollar home everyone receives the same excellent service. The sale of your home is truly a significant experience. Along with our local expertise we feel it is a winning combination.
3. Tell us about Yost & Yost! Your journey, your vision.
Thom and I have been selling the coast of southeastern North Carolina for 12 years. The move to the region was an opportunity for change. Working in a corporate setting most of my career to be able to get out of the cubicle life and work directly with people, which I so love was what I always wanted. For me personally , I try to be the agent that I would like to spend a day with, have some fun but know the facts. If my clients have the time and they have never visited I like to take people on my “ten cent” tour which includes many areas that you would never see or know to ask about. I think it is most important to start with that. Real Estate was also an opportunity to be entrepreneurial, creative and to embrace a drive that wasn’t being fulfilled behind a desk. No matter what company we work for we are independent contractors under Landmark’s umbrella, it is our business and we treat it so., I love my work. Thom and I truly believe home is where the heart is and we take that into consid-

eration with each and every home we prepare for sale and each set of keys we pass to new owners.
4. Ok: Reality TV: Million Dollar Listing NY and LA are wildly popular! Do you watch?
Yes, A guilty pleasure. But so much drama! Are these shows an accurate portrayal of selling high-end real estate? I have to imagine that much of it is a result of clever editing - I cannot imagine speaking to clients the way some of the agents on the show do with theirs. As far as the work put into listing and the marketing: yes. They work multi-million dollar properties and you can see the level of work /money that goes into listing. You’ve got to respect the hustle.

5. Respecting privacy, but we still would love to know, have you worked with celebrity clients? If so, what was it like working with them?
While I have not represented any celebrities buying homes, I was tasked with sourcing possible rentals for some of the cast for Safe Haven. I was able to find an apartment for David Lyons. I hear he was nothing like that rat of a husband he played in the movie. It was fun to be involved, but let’s be honest, Southport was the star of the film! b: - and yes it was handled through a representative c: I thought it was exciting to see all of the stars in town and more importantly how we the people of Southport treated them, and let them go about their business like they too were town folk - I know

BIZ Q&A they had to appreciate that and that is why Southport is such a great place to live. The people. d. No glamour for me but I was able to hand a client’s daughters resume directly to the producers and she did get an internship and her name was in lights !! And additional internships in Wilmington. I also once had a client that the main character of the show was fashioned after, I believe it is still on and that was cool – you know who you are.
6. Does your office manage premier vacation rentals on Bald Head Island?
While we do not handle Bald Head Island rentals, we do represent homeowners with listing and buying. Bald Head residents should know that Sotheby’s would be pleased to represent them and that we bring with us a network of global clients interested in the BHI Lifestyle. Sotheby’s was designed to connect the finest independent real estate companies to the most prestigious clientele in the world.
7. At Sotheby’s, are your home sales generally used as primary residences, or vacation/ investment properties?
It’s truly a mix. Our clientele are diverse
in real estate needs and interests. Which makes it all the more interesting for us as agents.
8. In the Luxury marketplace what sells homes? Privacy? Location? Square Footage? Builders/Architects?
Customization? In my opinion, expertise. Buyers come from all different backgrounds with different needs and all looking for different lifestyles. The ability of an agent to take that information, the criteria of their perfect home and find the right fit is key.
9. Where was the most beautiful/ extraordinary property you’ve sold located? And what made it so special.
I find something special in every home I list. I would say the most beautiful was because of its setting. The home was perfectly situated and looked at the Lockwood Folly, the Shallotte River, the ICW across the marsh and onto the ocean. You can imagine all of the waterfront homes in Brunswick County whether downtown Historic Southport or St. James on the ICW or off in the country all have beautiful views with something special to offer.

Well Southport of course! Thom and I feel blessed to have stumbled upon this town 13 years ago. We were on our way back from Charleston and pulled off of 95 to see a development we had been receiving postcards from. You know the postcard
- when you are of a certain age they start sending propaganda to retire :) Someone had directed us to have dinner in Southport and when we crested that spot on Howe Street where you can see the water and missed our turn for the Pharmacy – we ended up at the waterfront and that was it, we were in love.

“I have always had an affinity for broken down things,” she said. “I am constantly scanning the side of the road for abandoned homes, barns that are falling down, old rusty cars, etc. I think there’s something about modern things that just feel plastic to me,” she said. “I don’t feel the humanity in them. That’s not true of the old homes and cars. They’re individuals. I like that about them. And it might sound silly, but there’s something about the broken homes and rusty cars that speaks to me and pulls at me,” she said. “They were once beautiful things, integral parts of peoples lives, and now they sit all alone just falling apart and lonely. So, I go and visit them. I take their pictures, give them new lives and make them lovely again.”

Being the a certified Tomboy, I spent a lot of time as a child helping my older brother Chuck work on his ’71 Mustang that he restored and going to junkyards with him looking for parts. Or quite possibly I was just bugging him, but in any sense, that is where I picked up my love for classic cars. I’m
pretty sure his greatest passion in life as a young man was working on that car. And I thought my brother was pretty cool. Still do, actually. Oak Island artist Rachel Archer and I have a kindred spirit about abandoned things including old cars. Ar-

cher often uses them as inspiration for her work. She used a photo she took of an old car in a junkyard for her latest masterpiece, which features a 1961 Impala. “I bought this gigantic canvas and I had to figure out what deserved such a significant size,” she explained. “I went through my pho-
When I first saw her painting of the Impala, I honestly thought it was a photograph. The devil is in the details to say the least! She told me she has spent over 250 hours on perfecting the acrylic painting, getting every color exact and every blade of grass the perfect shade of green. Being Facebook friends, I have been excited to watch this painting’s amazing daily transformations.
According to Archer, her latest work is close to a “hard-edge” style of painting, which the Oxford dictionary describes as “relating to a style of abstract painting characterized by geometric shapes with sharply defined edges and often in bright colors.” Since her painting style doesn’t quite fit into that box, she calls her work Hard Edge Realism. “There is no mixing of paint on the canvas, so there is a distinct line between each color, “ said Archer. She has definitely made the style her own with her work, ’61 Sorbet, and Davey Jones Looker, which any true David Bowie fan will tell you is wonderful tribute to the late musician’s unique eyes.
Although Archer went to Art Institute of Pittsburg and received an Associates Degree in Specialized Technology, she soon realized that working

Photoshop and run it through a couple filters,” she explains. “This allows me to separate the colors. I then add a grid over that image. After that’s done, I move to the canvas, and draw a corresponding grid there. Then, it’s just a matter of drawing what’s in each box on the image into the correspond-

Then, I look at my reference photo and sort of play “Where’s Waldo” trying to find all the spots where it belongs. It’s essentially a paint by number without the numbers.” With her mad skills at

LOOKING BACK “In the evenings, as the outdoor air provided a cool alternative to the stuffy indoor temperatures, the entire family would move to the front porch. “
Meet Me on the Porch
Plenty of Southport homes feature front porches, but the original use may be lost. STORY BY: KASS FINCHER PHOTOS COURTESY OF SOUTHPORT HISTORIC SOCIETY
I
f you’re lucky enough to live in downtown Southport, this Fourth of July might find you sitting on your front porch watching the parade of families, strollers and dog-walkers pass by. Your porch will be decked out in patriotic bunting draped over the rails, and your rockers and porch swing will be filled with family and guests.
Our biggest event of the year is steeped in tradition, about sharing our community and patriotic spirit with the many visitors who join us. The front porches we occupy during this celebration also have a rich cultural history. Connecting us to nature, family and community, this design feature still plays an important role here in historic downtown Southport. The American front porch became popular in the mid-19th century. It connected the family to nature without leaving the
home. It provided a way to interact with others without intruding on the interior – the home’s eating and sleeping quarters. And it offered an escape to cooler breezes on hot summer nights. In Out on the Porch, North Carolina author Reynolds Price describes the porch’s appeal. “In the evenings, as the outdoor air provided a cool alternative to the stuffy indoor temperatures, the entire family would move to the front porch. The children might play in the front yard or the
30 Southport Magazine / JULY #2 2017 / www.SouthportMag.com
friendly confines of the neighborhood, while the parents rocked in their chairs, dismissing the arduous labors and tasks of the day into relaxation and comfort. Stories might be told, advice garnered, or songs sung. Whatever the traditions and manners of the family might be could be offered in this setting. What the family room or TV room of post-World War II America would become, existed first as the front porch.” The heyday of the front porch lasted until about the 1920’s, when
several technological developments hastened its demise. The automobile was the first. Cars brought noise and exhaust fumes to the once-quiet neighborhoods – not a pleasant experience for porch-sitters. Also, the automobile enabled people to drive to and from town, so they were able to buy cheaper land in the suburbs and move there. With large lots and less proximity to neighbors and roads, the front porch became less important. And over time, post-WWII homeowners discovered the comforts of air conditioning and television that brought families indoors. The home’s interior was much more comfortable, and the after-supper activity changed from interacting with family and neighbors on the front porch to sitting on the sofa, watching the box in the living room as it brought you news of the world. In recent years, the backyard and deck have become the family gathering place, with gas grills, fire pits and water features offering places to commune. The privacy of the backyard took over the neighborly outreach and spontaneity of the front porch. The front porch might still be there, but oftentimes its rockers are empty. Local architect Rich Bandera, who moved here from New England and has lived here 15 years, reflects on the changes in our community. “When we first moved here, many homeowners were Southport natives. The porch is where people met. As those people got older and property values went up, houses were sold and the mix of residents changed. I think the pace has changed, fewer people are walking; people’s lives have changed.” “I think in a small town, whether it’s here or Key West or a New England town, when you’re close to the street it facilitates community. When I lived in Boston, I lived in a neighborhood where the streets were compact, even though the units were three stories high. So the street and the porches were where you met people.”
Southport Magazine 2016-2017 SOI Chamber Small Business of the Year Winner
LOOKING BACK Bandera’s designs here are often partially a reflection of the subdivision’s requirements. “I’ve had experiences where they were forced to put a porch on, due to the development’s architectural rules, because they were trying to create an aesthetic. Some people do the minimum to comply, knowing they won’t use it. But a lot of clients want the porch and that’s good to see.” He refers to some new local developments that are embracing the small community feel. “There are some successful new neighborhoods here. Jonas Creek went through a process to get their roads narrowed; the intent was to create community and bring in a pedestrian character. The people who are moving there are excited about that. Price’s Creek is another good example.” As for the downtown historic area, Bandera believes new construction is largely in keeping with the older neighborhoods. “The street layout in Southport is set up on a pedestrian grid. You’ve got the main commercial street, the waterfront, and interspersed streets on a straightfor-

people.”
ward grid system. Although there are no strict requirements, most people building homes here do “what they can to fit in.” He is concerned, however, about a couple of challenges to our small town way of life. “There’s a 99 foot right of way on a lot of these streets, maybe 25 feet is actually roadway, the rest is city property, usually greenscape. When you start to whittle away at how people park, using different materials to extend the paved surface, you’re changing the landscape. And that’s kind of the beauty of Southport. I wish we had some more controls there. The right of way fits in with the treescape and the hardscape. When it’s paved it changes the character of th streets and neighborhoods here.” His other concern is cars and golf carts. “When people are driving by at 35 miles an hour, that doesn’t work. Golf carts are destination-driven, missing the parts in between. We have such a wonderful, walkable town. When you walk, you see a lot of different things, you meet people.”
Opposite Page: Robert Davis House, Bay Street, Circa 1930’s
And the front porch, Bandera believes, facilitates that spontaneous interaction. “There are all sorts of options with porches. Within a front porch, some people might have a different rail, an opaque one that creates more privacy, or no rail at all, or a deeper porch that creates areal living space. That creates a whole different character. Some want more privacy and others want it open. Either way, it’s Southport – our beautiful town.”

CHEERS! Best Beers for the Summer
Take it from the experts, craft beers cool your summer thirst! STORY & PHOTOS BY: JAMES HOBBS, OWNER OF THE GRAPE & ALE, 2017 MAGGIE WINNER FOR BEST BEER SELECTION
T
hanks to the constant emerging growth of breweries in North Carolina as well as around the world, today’s beer lover has a broad spectrum of styles to choose from that will satisfy everyone’s personal taste. Whenever I think of what will quench my thirst on the hot and hazy days to come on Oak Island, I do not think of porters or stouts, although for me, having a small serving of either of those two after dinner is like having a fine port. Rather, I want something light and cold…say for example a kolsch, pilsner, American Pale Ale, a fruity beer, a gose, a saison, a wheat or wit beer, or a session IPA. Different styles of beers are separated and characterized by the different kinds of yeast used as well as fermentation methods.
One of The Grape & Ale’s best sellers in the summertime is Stiegel Grapefruit Radler. A
Canned beer is more widely accepted than in years past due to the materials used to produce them. Gone are the sometimes “tinny” tastes on the palate that you got from canned beers. The good news is The Grape & Ale has a wide variety and selection of beer in cans that will quench your summertime thirsts.
shandy style beer, this one only has 35 calories per 12 oz serving and is super refreshing. Kolsch was born in Cologne Germany and can best be described as light, crisp, and quaffable – always begging for another sip. To experience a broad spectrum of this style, be sure and try Gaffel Kolsch from Germany as well as a couple of our domestic selections such as Gateway Kolsch, and Clown Shoes Mango Kolsch. American Pale Ales (APA) are clean and less hoppy than an India Pale Ale (IPA) with a nice balance of both malts and hops. The British version of an APA is more malty
and buttery. Check out Dale’s Pale Ale by Oskar Blues, or Invasion Pale Ale by Cigar City Session IPAs such as Coastwise by Coronado are less heavy than the traditional IPAs in terms of alcohol content and hoppiness. A Gose is a style of beer that uses wild yeast and is termed as a “sour beer.” This is a fast growing segment of today’s beer market. In fact, there is a new store in Wilmington called The Sour Barn that specializes in sour beers only. A couple of my favorites are Westbrooks Gose, Westbrooks Key Lime, when available, or Destilh’s Wild Sour Blueberry Gose.
Always and forever popular are the wheat or wit beer styles that include Hefeweizen (“yeast wheat”) or wheat beer in its traditional, unfiltered form. Great combinations of styles of wheat beers include some of the fruity selections such as Lost Coast Tangerine Wheat and Avery’s Haili Kialiki. One of The Grape & Ale’s best sellers in the summertime is Stiegel Grapefruit Radler. A shandy style beer, this one only has 35 calories per 12 oz serving and is super refreshing. To wrap this up be aware that bottles are not allowed on the beach on Oak Island.

100% All American! Where the 4th of July is not just one day a year, celebrate America every day!” STORY & PHOTOS BY: ALYSSA CROUSON
T
he All-American Grill started with a dream: a dream of red white and blue. This is where all Americans can be united as one, at least long enough to enjoy a quality burger.
A NEW GRILL IS IN TOWN A new burger restaurant has opened up downtown Southport that really puts you in a patriotic mood. Ron Thompson, one of the owners of All-American Grill, once had a dream of a place made with the colors of America-- an All-American Grill. He and his friends wanted to have a place together where they could give back to their community and support our troops. The All-American Grill gives off a welcoming first impression because of it’s comfortable, and refreshing patriotic vibe. The high quality cuisine makes them different from all of the other burger places around Southport. WHY OPEN A RESTAURANT? Ron Thompson had a dream one night about his ideal restaurant and he knew that he had to make this idea into a reality. His dream was where everything was red, white and blue and he explained to me that some may not dream in color but he does. Almost like Ron Thompson could see what was needed in his own
perspective. In his story, he repeatedly said that the dream was about patriotism and Thompson wanted to have a place where he could show what he felt and allow other Americans to feel closer as a community. Three or four days later, his wife and group of friends were informed about his exemplary vision over dinner. This friendly meetup included all of the current owners, Jacques and Beverly Hermenier, Ron, & Lois Thompson. Jacques and Lois took some convincing, but Ron Thompson was set on his idea. Later, when everyone was on board, Mr. Hermenier asked to be his business partner. This partnership was just the beginning of their speedy journey to open their restaurant.. GET TO KNOW THE OWNERS Ron, Lois, and Thompson are all locals and have lived in the area for 25 years. Lois Thompson was actually born here, and moved back with her husband years ago. Jacques Hermenier and his wife Beverly moved here from the D.C. area
Owners, Jacques and Beverly Hermenier, Ron, & Lois Thompson. in 2008. Jacques Hermenier has had 45 years of experience in the restaurant business and it shows. Their friendship was established in 2013 and they have always shared a love for the Southport community. We can all agree that the owners are all lovely, admirable and inviting people. They really bring a friendly atmosphere to their restaurant and to Southport as a whole. BUILDING UP A RESTAURANT The building they are in now was originally a beauty shop, but they were able to make it into a restaurant within 5 months. A great deal of hard work and thought was put into this establishment in record time considering the size of the building. To improve their food quality they went around surveying burger places in the area to find something they can do to set themselves apart from the other restaurants. During their search they realized that most places did not make their food to order, so the group chose to emphasize their fresh food and wholesome cooking. The patties are grilled right in front of you, and all of the food is served fresh with a smile. They take pride in knowing they do not even own a microwave. At this grill being authentic and satisfying is a common goal.
Good old fashioned cheese burger and fries!

OPENING NIGHT The opening night was on May 13th, the customers loved the new place and gave great feedback. Over 460 people came in and experienced the amazing food, causing the owners to feel very overwhelmed. They enjoyed the product as much as they loved to meet some of the nicest people in town. The restaurant closed a little early their first night because the crew members were so exhausted after the awesome turnout. There was plenty of food left but they worked so hard they had no energy left to finish out the night. WEEKLY HOURS AND PRICES The grill is open six days a week: Monday through Friday they are open 11am to 7pm. On Saturdays their hours are 11am to 5pm, and they’re closed on Sundays. The food is well worth the money considering the reasonable amount given and the authentic taste. The burgers are truly enjoyable and they left me excited to go back to try more. Overall I think this group of retirees are off to a great start, and I can’t wait to see how well they do from here on out with their “Southport dream.” They are a great addition to the Southport area. To see more about them you can visit them at 505 N Howe St or call (910)477-6677.

Pretty Displays of Patriotic Spirit Red, White and Blue fill the air, swag flags, poofy wreaths and bunting! STORY & PHOTOS BY: AMI BROWN
E
ven though the Fourth of July has passed us by... whew, we all love to see Old Glory flying, swaying proud in the skies and flapping loudly in the salty breeze. We can’t get enough of the red, white and blue and that’s a good thing. Southport’s tiny 3000 residents become 50,000 for a three-day stint. Plenty of residents and businesses cringe at the thought, but some embrace the holiday and show their spirit proudly. I saw so many decorated homes, but have chosen just a few to showcase in this issue. I hope you enjoy the photos and maybe they will inspire you to bring out the flags on your porch next year. This really dresses up a rocker! 38 Southport Magazine / JULY #2 2017 / www.SouthportMag.com
