ON THE COVER

L

iving in a tourist destiation is fun. Sure, the roads and stores and restaurants get crowded, but I never tire of seeing the visitors to our little paradise having a great time visiting where I get to live. But I got to wondering if years of living here might lead us to miss out on seeing the place through the eyes of a visitor. So, we decided to do a series of articles on Touring Our Home Town, and because we don’t like to do anyhting halfway, we covered Land, Sea and Air tours. Hey.it’s a tough job but for you our dear readers, we cruised in a golf cart, set out to sea in a pontoon boat and took to the skies in a helicopter. It was every bit as much fun as you might imagine. We learned new facts about Southport’s history, saw nesting pelicans and circled the Oak Island Lighthouse at 800 feet snapping photos all the time. The lesson we learned? Get out there and enjoy our home like it is your first time seeing it. You will rediscover why you love it here. And if you are a vistor, welcome, and please take advantage of all we have to show you.

hether you are new to the area or have lived here all your life, a town as rich in history as Southport always has something new to learn. Luckily, Daniel Guetschow at Southport Fun Tours provides a service that is equally entertaining as it is educational. Zipping around beautiful downtown Southport in his decorated, multi-row golf cart, Dan tells you everything one would need to know about our beautiful seaside town, from its original discovery by the Spanish in the 16th century to how the city has coped during the COVID-19 pandemic. Having lived in the area for just over a decade, Guetschow fills the entire 45-minute tour with facts about nearly every inch of the downtown area, including fascinating stories about individual trees like the famous Indian Trail Tree located in Keziah Park. Estimated to be anywhere between

800 to 1,000 years old, the Indian Trail Tree is believed to have gotten its unique shape when Native Americans living in the area marked the trail to their fishing hole by burying the tip of the sapling under the ground. Other famous trees highlighted on the tour include The Four Sisters and one located near local favorite restaurant Fishy Fishy that has a piece of ice house equipment from the 1960s embedded in its trunk. A natural entertainer, Dan (a.k.a Rev)

also is known to perform gigs around town with his bandmate, Donnie Weinstein. Together they’re known as Rev & Doc and could be seen playing at private parties and local bars back when live music was deemed a safe activity. They hope that with the relaxing of pandemic restrictions

and increasing numbers of vaccinated people, they can see that missing piece of Southport nightlife return with gusto in time for the summer months.

Mainstays like The Christmas House are mentioned with his little quip about the Hanukkah house being out in the back — that one will be accompanied by one of the many chimes from his “Bad Joke Bell” during the tour. Keeping the humor friendly for families, jokes are tailored appropriately for the audience on board, taking special care to accommodate locals and first-time visitors with stories that hold the interest of everyone at once. It’s no secret that Southport has spent some time in the spotlight on screens of all sizes, but on a Southport Fun Tour you learn just how much the entertainment industry has used our coastal town for the various films and TV shows including titles such as Matlock, Crimes of the Heart, I Know What You Did Last Summer, The Secret Life Of Bees, Firestarter, and of course, Safe Haven. It’s not a guarantee that you’ll do any celebrity-spotting on the tour, but there have been encounters with some, such as Meg Ryan, who has been known to ride bikes around town when she is visiting. In addition to

the bright lights of Hollywood, Southport is home to some literary history as well. Nicholas Sparks wasn’t the only author to find charm here. On the tour, you will stop by the childhood home of Robert Roark, novelist and drinking partner of Ernest Hemmingway. There truly is something new for everyone to discover on this tour, whether you call Southport ‘Home,’ or are just here for a weekend. In less than an hour, you will laugh and learn about everything from the architecture, the culture, the history, the nature, and the charm that might otherwise go overlooked. Perfect for a sunny day, this tour will have you wanting to stay for more fun in Southport. To enjoy this fabulous tour for yourself, it operates (weather permitting) every Tuesday through Sunday, starting at 11:30 am with the last tour departing at 3:30 pm. CURRENTS Where Sky Meets Sea A Helicopter Flight Brings A Renewed Respect For Life At The Water’s Edge

STORY BY CAROL PEARSON, PHOTOS BY JEFFREY STITES

T

hwop thwop thwop … my heart was racing (in a good way) long before the rotors started to move for a recent helicopter flight over my local area. I’ve always been a geek for flying, since I first sat in a seaplane on Seventh Lake in the Adirondacks one summer as a kid. The pull of defying gravity and leaving the ground has always been powerful, so I was really excited about my morning flight with High Tide Aviation at the Cape Fear Regional Jetport. After getting the safety primer and

buckling in, our affable pilot Willis Tew did his final safety checks and got us off the ground in an easy maneuver. In a matter of seconds, we rose up, crossed the ICW and headed over the marshes. Wow. That view. The first thing you realize when you fly over this area, whether flying into ILM or

taking a local tour like this one, is just how much water with live on, in, and around. It’s gorgeous, of course, with its creeks and tidal marshes merging into the wider expanse of river then ocean. The sailboat lazily making its way down the ICW looks like a bright white toy from above. The wide open space of it all gives an impression of ease, almost a lazy vibe that is harder to find on the ground. Yet beyond the beauty, the view made me poignantly aware of how little stands between the places we live, shop, work and relax and all that water. As we headed toward Caswell Beach, our pilot pointed out two boats still marooned in the marsh from Hurricane Isaias; some broken boardwalks and wrecked docks attest to the power of that storm. Still, if you look at aerial images taken just after the storm, the resilience of this area — both natural and human-made — is striking. We collectively know and accept the risks as a worthy tradeoff for living here.

and time spent flying over the Cape Fear Area. He earned his Flight Instructor Certificate in January of 2020 and joined the High Tide team the following month flying tours and helping aspiring pilots accomplish their dreams”.

“The desire to fly is an idea handed down to us by our ancestors who, in their grueling travels across trackless lands in prehistoric times, looked enviously on the birds soaring freely through space, at full speed, above all obstacles, on the infinite highway of the air.” – Wilbur Wright

We circled the lighthouse on Caswell beach, for a gorgeous 360 degree view of the area from Assembly Point to Southport to Bald Head Island and beyond. Turning back toward Oak Island, the curve of the southern-facing beach was obvious … and yes, you really can see all the way to the hazy condo towers in Myrtle Beach on a day like this.

Tew didn’t start out to be a pilot; he attended NC State to study civil engineering. Two years later he enrolled online with Utah Valley University to study Aviation Administration and acquired his private helicopter pilots license at Total Flight Solutions in Louisburg NC.

Tew piloted the Robinson R44 Raven with a steady hand and friendly attitude, offering insights into his flying background

“I certainly do love math,” New Said, “perhaps more specifically working with numbers, but also the pressure to perform

CURRENTS with precise timing. I’ve been a musician all my life as well, leading first chair on upright bass all through grade school.” He says aviation brings this all together. He certainly seems like a natural at it, and there wasn’t one moment before or during the flight that I had even a glimmer of nervousness or concern … even with the left door taken off for the flight so the photographer could snap some amazing photos. Tew talks with reverence about a recent experience from the air; he had a group up for a tour and was heading over the water when they spotted a fever of stingrays migrating south. “There had to be thousands of them,” he said. “We saw them in a line all the way from Bald Head Island up to Carolina Beach. “We saw dolphins diving in the middle of the rays, then a humpback whale broke the surface,” he continued, the awe still evident in his voice. His comments reinforced the second powerful realization I had while up in the air; those of us lucky enough to live, work or play here are stewards to an amazing environment. Clearly we are not in control of it (it was easy to spot the dune replenishment equipment on the beach and in the water along the shore of Oak Island, rebuilding the dune line after last year’s storm surge) yet as stewards our actions do matter.

“Man must rise above the Earth—to the top of the atmosphere and beyond—for only thus will he fully understand the world in which he lives.” – Socrates Living as we do surrounded by water, we face the reality that our communities can be cut off and isolated pretty quickly. One bridge closed by bad weather or road work; living at “the end of the line” on fuel and grocery deliveries; roads leading here from inland prone to sudden floods; we can be cut off from the rest of the world with little warning. Still, our lives must go on, as they do after the storms and the floods and the tourist season and all the other inevitable parts of living where the river meets the sea. Spending a few precious moments up above it all brings a new perspective to my life on Oak Island. Perhaps nowhere else I’ve lived, from New York to California to Michigan, was I so dependent on my immediate community. This reality makes living in this area challenging at times … yet it also makes life profoundly sweet. Even as our ranks swell in the summer months, we remain a small town community, with locals who

Southport Boat Rentals Sightseeing Cruise STORY AND PHOTOS BY JEFFREY STITES

W

hen we came up with the idea for a Locals Touring Their Home Town series, we expected that maybe a local would get something different, maybe even something more, out of the experience. What we did not expect was the wave of emotions that hit us when we chatted with our Southport Boat Rentals tour captain as we prepared to leave the Yacht Basin for a sightseeing excursion. We’d scheduled our tour for a weekend when my parents were visiting from Pennsylvania and our son was home for a few days after graduating college in Greensboro. The parent feels were running strong already after the graduation ceremony, then, in talking to Capt. Eli Bostic, we learned that his mom taught our now college graduated son in Kindergarten at Southport Elementary. No tourist is going find that connection— that kind of magic is reserved for locals who take the time to play at tourist at home. We all began

our voyage with the biggest smiles on our faces. We weren’t the only smiling faces aboard, though. Not a surprise, as the Southport Boat Rentals operation is a very cheerful place. From the brightly painted building snuggled between Provision Co and Fishy Fishy on the Yacht Basin to the super-friendly young lady in the ticket office to Captain Eli and his mate, everything about this experience speaks of fun.

Southport is a very waterfront-oriented town. It even has “port” in the name. In my opinion, seeing Southport from the water is a must-do for locals and visitors alike. Captain Eli grew up blocks from the

Southport waterfront and has been out on local waters his entire life, so he was the perfect guide and interpreter of all the sights.

CURRENTS “I truly enjoy taking people out and showing them the area that I love,” said Capt. Eli. “I try to ask most of our guests if they live in the area or if not, where they are from and I’d say it’s close to half locals and half visitors. I’d say the locals enjoy the Sunset Cruise the most because they already know about the landmarks around the area,” he said. For the true tourist experience, we chose the 2:30 pm Sightseeing Cruise. We began with a spin around the Yacht Basin, traveled up the Cape Fear River past American Fish, the Garrison House and the City Pier. We went as far up river as the River Hotel, which was really cool because that’s where my parents were staying. The trip then headed back downriver past Bird Island and out toward Bald Head before crossing the channel and taking a look at Fort Caswell. We motored back to Southport’s waterfront and headed down the Intracoastal to Southport Marina before heading back to our dock in the Yacht Basin. It was a really great taste of Southport from the water and, judging from the reactions of other passengers, enjoyed by all. Capt. Eli narrated the tour with history, local knowledge and nature facts, some of which were new to us even as nearly 30year residents of the area. We got to see the work being done on the marina, a tree full of nesting pelicans and even a dolphin.

We were neighbors growing up in Southport and now we work two blocks from our childhood homes, so it’s kind of a full circle,” he said. We offered tours on our smaller boats in the past but saw the need for a larger more accommodating vessel. “We offered tours on our smaller boats in the past, but saw the need for a larger more accommodating vessel,” he said. Southport Boat Rentals tour boat is a 40-ft, 28 passenger, squeaky clean and modern pontoon boat. The ride is calm and pleasant. Of course it helps if you go on a day that’s sunny and 73 degrees, but as locals, we can pick our tour day to be a nice as possible, right? At $20 a passenger, we felt like the tour, which lasts about an hour and feels neither hurried nor stretched out too long, was more than worth the investment. As the tourists begin to fill up our community for the summer (at least) it would be wise to call ahead to (910) 523-6021

boats available to experienced boaters. Land lubbers might want to stick to the tour and leave the captaining to the professionals. Southport Boat rentals is just now completing work on “The Mullet Bar,” a beer and wine bar on the waterfront at the back of their building. Tour guests and any-

one who just wants a relaxed place for a refreshing beverage can come enjoy the view. Relaxing might not be in the near future cards for Southport Boat Rentals’ owners though. “Robert and I both just had baby boys only 2 months apart so I see a lot of parenting in our future,” Capt. Eli said.

But Capt. Eli has the right perspective on things, I think. “I just feel really blessed to be able to do what I love for a living and am truly thankful for every person who has come out with us and I hope to keep doing this for many years to come,” he said.

Memorial Day Fun At The Jetport A Day of Fun And Remembrance

STORY BY JEFFREY STITES PHOTO CONTRIBUTED

N

ormally, finding out that your town won’t be visited by a bomber bristling with machine guns and capable of carrying tons of explosives would be good news, but we are actually disappointed. The “Aluminum Overcast,” a restored World War II vintage B-17 bomber, was scheduled to visit the Cape Fear Jetport on Memorial Day weekend, but had to cancel its entire spring/ summer tour due to mechanical difficulties. But the local Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 939, the organization that invited the bomber to the Cape Fear Jetport, is not letting the lack of Aluminum Overcast rain on its parade and has scheduled a day of fun for the entire family for Saturday, May 29. “Of course we were very saddened to learn our Tour Stop with the Aluminum Overcast had to be cancelled, but our membership didn’t want that to deter us

from paying our respects to all our fallen veterans,” said chapter President Rich Largent. “Hopefully our Saturday event will help to keep their memories alive.”

Come see the Brunswick Big Band at the Cape Fear Jetport Memorial Day Weekend

A day of classic, family fun begins with a pancake breakfast from 8:30-11 am ($6 per plate) and continues with a classic car show, vintage World War II aircraft and memorabilia on display, and a free concert from 1-3 pm by the Brunswick Big Band. Hot dogs and hamburgers will be available for purchase as well from 11:30 am - 1:30 pm.

So gather the family and take a trip back to yesteryear all while paying tribute to the memory of those who have lost their lives defending our freedoms. The Cape Fear Jetport is located at 4019 Long Beach Road. Parking is free and plentiful.

4th of July Festival This Year’s Events Explode With Fun STORY BY JEFFREY STITES

T

his year’s 4th of July Festival won’t be exactly like it was in the times before the pandemic, but many of our favorite features are returning, with a bit of a twist. With construction on Howe Street and COVID restrictions complicating matters, the Town of Oak Island will be hosting more of the celebration this year, while continuing its traditional role as host of Beach Day, and some activities in Southport have been moved to private venues. Beach Day will be on Thursday, July 1, and feature horseshoe, bocce ball, corn hole, and beach volleyball tournaments as well as a sandcastle competition. The little ones can enjoy inflatable rides in Middleton Park during the day with evening bringing a food truck rodeo, shag contest and live music from Gary Lowder & Smokin’ Hot. The evening will end with fireworks at the Oak Island Pier to celebrate the town’s birthday. Fireworks are visible for miles up and down the strand, so no need to crowd

around the pier if you’d rather not.

Start your Independence Day with a flag raising ceremony on the Garrison lawn in Southport. Moore Street Market and Southport Market will host readings of the Declaration and other Southport venues (to be announced) will host entertainment on the 4th. The Arts and Craft Market continues in Middleton Park, this day joined by Live Pro Wrestling.

On Saturday, July 3, enjoy the Red, White and Blue Car Show in Bill Smith Park, 4446 Fish Factory Road, with musical entertainment provided by the Back Porch Rockers. The popular Arts and Crafts Market will be in Oak Island’s Middleton Park along with entertainment from Up Your Arts.

A freedom Flotilla is scheduled to begin at 2 pm July 4 in the Intracoastal Waterway in front of Frying Pan and the Old Yacht Basin and continue past Rusty Hooks Dockside Grill before ending at the St. James Marina around 4 pm. Great viewing spots are available all along the route.

This year will feature quite a few ways to celebrate the reason for the season in

The Fourth of July festivities will end with a fireworks display from the Oak Is-

land pier visible for miles up and down the strand. “The festival committee appreciates the Town of Oak Island’s willingness to expand the number of events held on Oak Island in 2021,” said NC 4th of July Festival Co-Chair, Trisha Howarth. “We are very privileged to live in a community that comes together in challenging times to foster good outcomes. I am delighted that there will be in-person events in 2021, and look forward to a return of a full schedule of events in 2022.” Look for a complete schedule of events with times and locations in the July issue of Southport Magazine!

he Brunswick Town-Fort Anderson State Historic Site is one of the prettiest and most interesting spots in the entire Cape Fear region. While it’s beautiful and interesting during its regular daytime hours, at night, a visit takes on a special, kind of spooky vibe that is hard to describe until you’ve been there. Bald Head Day Trip Ride The Ferry To A Whole Different World STORY AND PHOTOS BY KELLY WITTER

J

ust a 20-minute ferry ride from Southport, Bald Head Island (BHI) is the perfect 1-day adventure on a car-free island. My first visit to BHI began as a “one-time day trip” in 1994 when I was pregnant with my first child and wobbly on the bike I rented to explore this island paradise. The day trip sneakily morphed into annual long weekends and an occasional week. As my three kids grew and came to love the freedom of BHI’s outdoor pursuits, such as biking, kayaking, and fishing, I realized how fortunate I was that they were fulfilled vacationing in nature. In 2009, we decided to buy a house, pulling it off by renting it during the summer. BHI is a special place to visit with family, friends, as well as solo. Here are my tips for making the most of your day and staying on a budget.

I recommend getting an early start to maximize your day. Yes, I’m saying grab your to-go coffee mug and hop on the 8 or 9 am ferry. You won’t regret it and you can nap later on the beach. Check out the ferry schedule at Deep Point Marina. You’ll need to add about 15+ extra minutes to park and purchase your ferry tickets. Adult tickets are $23 round trip, kids ages 3-12 are $12, and under 2 are free, as are our 4-legged friends. BHI is very dog friendly! Parking is $11 in summer and $9 off season. If you have a bike, the ferry is a short ride from Southport. Taking your bike or

kayak on the ferry is $23, the cost of a ticket. A sense of calm comes over me the moment I board the ferry. You can take in views of the Southport waterfront and Oak Island on the starboard side and the intercostal waterway islands on the port side (getting nautical here!). You can rent bikes, kayaks, and surfboards as well as golf carts on the island, and I recommend reserving these ahead of time. To save money and maximize your day, bring a picnic or pick up to-go food at the well-stocked Maritime Market and

eat on the beach or at one of the many common area parks. Here are my Top 12 suggestions for a day trip to BHI. You can’t do them all in one day, but pick your favorites and come on back for more! 1. Relaxing, shelling, walking, and running on the 14 miles of pristine beach – Seriously, I walked for three miles on East Beach recently on a sunny afternoon and didn’t see another person. Plus, BHI is very dog-friendly and a great place to spend time with your four-legged friend. 2. Kayaking, canoeing, and paddle boarding in the marsh (or ocean if you’re experienced) – The Creek Access on Federal Road has an easy launch site. If you’re ocean-ready, check out South Beach which tends to be more calm. Surfboards and inflatable kayaks/paddleboards can be carried on the ferry for free. 3. Biking the car-free BHI roads and East Beach – Biking on BHI is

super chill, and there are lots of options. The maritime forest is shaded by live oaks draped in Spanish moss, the “Wynds” parallel to South Beach offers ocean views, and the harbor sports a range of charming homes and yachts. One of my favorite activities when low tide and low wind coincide is to bike from East Beach Access 42 to the Fort Fisher access. I recommend leaving Access 42 about 30-60 minutes before low tide to allow plenty of time to explore along the way. From the Harbor, this ride is about 14 miles round trip and takes about 2 hours. 4. Visiting the Bald Head Island Conservancy – The BHIC fosters barrier island conservation, education, and preservation. Check out the turtle nests spring through fall! Watching a loggerhead turtle lay a nest on East Beach is one of the most amazing experiences I’ve ever had! During normal times, they offer a range of programming for all ages. They also host weekly Turtle Trot

This musical play is more than a tribute to the legendary country singer who died tragically at age 30 in a plane crash in 1963. The two-woman show is based on a true story about Cline’s friendship with a fan from Houston named Louise Seger, who befriended the star in a Texas honkytonk in 1961, and continued a correspondence with Cline until her death. The show includes many of Patsy’s unforgettable hits such as “Crazy,” “I Fall to Pieces,” “Sweet Dreams” and “Walking After Midnight” more than two dozen songs in all!

THE LIFESPAN OF A FACT

June 10-20, Thursdays-Saturday 8 pm, Sunday, 3 pm Ruth & Bucky Stein Studio Theatre at Thalian Hall

Jim Fingal is a fresh-out-of-Harvard fact checker for a prominent but sinking New York magazine. John D’Agata is a talented writer with a transcendent essay about the suicide of a teenage boy—an essay that could save the magazine from collapse. When Jim is assigned to fact check D’Agata’s essay by editor Emily Primrose, the two come head to head in a comedic yet gripping battle over facts versus truth. As Emily had to decide if the essay can be published in time to meet a looming deadline, she (and the audience) is forced to decide if literary beauty and personal truths are as vital to the story as cold, hard facts. This energetically entertaining and surprisingly funny play is based on true events, and adapted from the book of the same name, written by D’Agata and Fingal. After 15 months of witnessing the battle over what constitutes the TRUTH vs a FACT play out on our screens and in our national conversations, THE LIFESPAN OF A FACT allows us the chance to laugh, and to breathe, while framing the larger debate into one seemingly simple argument. Starring Randy Davis, Matt Carter and Eleanor Stafford. Directed by Steve Vernon.

Sharing Surf Dreams SBHS Senior Rides Into A Bright Future STORY AND PHOTOS BY JEFFREY STITES

T

he founder of the South Brunswick High School Surf Dreams Club is graduating high school and, perhaps a little ironically, leaving the surf behind to follow her dreams. Oak Island’s Sophia Ordonez began the club as a local chapter supporting the Surf Dreams Foundation, based in Myrtle Beach, and is now on her way to pursue an Elementary education degree at Appalachian State, far from the roar fo the surf she’s grown up loving. But her experience with the Surf Dreams club and its outreach to educate youth in both surfing and ocean safety helped to set her on this path. “I just love sharing my passion and seeing the young kids learn something new and succeed. It makes me so happy,” Ordonez said. “I’m going to school to be a teacher. That’s what my passion is. I like seeing kids succeed.” One of the signature activities of the Surf Dreams organization is Take A Kid Surfing Day. What had been an annual

and some middle school age,” Ordonez said. Ordonez learned of the Surf Dreams Foundation from its founder, Phil Jackson, a Garden City, SC resident who serves as an announcer in many regional surfing competitions. As a middle schooler, Ordonez traveled to Garden City to help at a Take A Kid Surfing event and was hooked. As a South Brunswick High School freshman, she founded a local chapter. “I wanted it to be an extension of the Surf Dreams Foundation. I enjoy volunteering at their events and I wanted touring events like that to Brunswick County,” she said. SBHS Surf Dreams also teaches ocean safety to fourth and fifth graders in some Brunswick County Schools. Ordonez said she taught the session at Bolivia Elementary when she was a sophomore and was

shocked at how much they had to learn about the ocean at their back door. “I think that it’s really important. A lot of them were clueless about the beach and water safety,” she said. “At Bolivia there were a lot of kids that had never been to the beach before. There is a lot they don’t really know. It’s just so important since we don’t have lifeguards. You either learn from parents or you don’t learn and when you go to the beach you can get in a dangerous situation.” The presentation teaches animal life, such as the difference between dolphins and sharks and how to identify each as well as what critters are safe and not.

event for the club ran into some trouble last year. “Last year when we posted it, the spots filled up in less than an hour. We rescheduled due COVID, then the hurricane hit and there were no roads so we had to cancel it,” Ordonez said. This year’s event was a huge success, with over 50 surf students learning the ropes from volunteers on Oak Island. 34 Southport Magazine /June /June 2021 / www.SouthportMag.com

More than 50 young surfers came out for Take a Kid Surfing Day

They cover ocean currents and teach kids to pick a spot on shore to watch while the are in the surf to make sure they don’t get carried too far down the beach. “We teach them that the tide comes up and comes down, so don’t leave your toys too close to the water,” Ordonez said. The club members have not been able to travel to the classrooms this year due to COVID, so they have been making a video that teachers can show to teach ocean safety. Ordonez grew up on Oak Island, moving from Connecticut when she was four, and

spent a lot of time at the beach. “We’re just a huge beach family, we spent all our time on the beach,” she said. “My brother started surfing and he just kinda taught me I guess. We surf less together now because we have jobs and he’s in college, but especially when there’s good waves or something, we go out together.” Aside from surfing, Ordonez is a dancer as well, and also shares that passion with children. She volunteered as an instructor with the Brunswick Arts Council’s Dancing on Air program in which she helped teach

ballet to children in the Cedar Grove community. The experience cemented her love of teaching children, she said, “I feel like I had all these amazing opportunities that showed me that’s what I want to do.” Ordonez is headed off to college with several scholarship awards, including the

State Employees Credit Union People Helping People Scholarship, an award based on community service. “I put a lot of work into this club and other community service, so that means a lot to me,” she said.

Audition Notice

Riding The Tide

Popular Oak Island Event Returns In June STORY AND PHOTO BY JEFFREY STITES

O

ak Island’s Ride The Tide event is back! This is one of our very favorite things to do each year and if you’ve not joined in the fun, you really should think about it. Oak Island’s Davis Canal and Montgomery Slough are easily navigated by even the newest paddlers and offer spectacular scenery and nature watching. Even with approximately 100 paddlers involved, people get spread out enough that you can have a really relaxing and fun day out on the water.

This year’s event will be a little different. Usually it’s a one-way trip from the Oak Island Recreation Center dock to Blue Water Point, but this year paddlers will be making a round trip out of Blue Water Point Marina on 57th Place West. They will “ride the tide” up into Davis canal and as the tide turns, ride it back to the marina. There will be a kayaker to mark the turn around point, so no worries about getting off track. Registering early at http://bit.ly/RideTheTide2021 will guarantee participants a coveted” Ride The Tide” t-shirt. The fee is $35 per person.

Brunswick Little Theatre Is Back!

hile the stage at the Brunswick Little Theatre has been dark since the beginning of the pandemic, volunteers have been busy making the most of the down time. According to BLT Past President Kathy Cagney Rossi, they have installed a new stage floor along with some new lights and paint in the theatre and have remodeled the lobby. While they are looking at options for other events, the first show to take the stage will be James and the Giant Peach on October 8, 2021. With that in mind, we are thrilled to pass along this audition notice. We’re back and so excited! The Stagestruck Players, the youth division of Brunswick Little Theatre, announces auditions for the October 2021 production of the musical, James and the Giant Peach, Jr. Auditions will be held at Brunswick Little Theatre, 8068 River Road, Southport on Saturday, June 26, 10 am until 12 noon, and Sunday, June 27, from 3-5 pm. Auditions are open to all youth ages 10 through 18. Auditions will consist of a demonstration of singing ability, learning a movement combination, and a reading. In order to create and maintain a safe auditioning environment, auditions will be scheduled in 15 minute blocks. Auditions can be scheduled by calling or texting Deborah Skillman at 910 – 470 – 5652. ART BEAT Artisans Gallery

Howe Street Gallery Features Local Artists STORY BY CARLA EDSTROM

N

estled in historical Southport near the river and underneath the canopy of live oak trees resides a gallery full of fine artwork and fine crafts. Everything inside the Artisans Gallery on Howe is lovingly made by local artists and craftspeople. The quaint little house turned gallery has all the charm of other historical Southport architecture including an idyllic wrap-around porch taking in the breezes and views of the nearby Cape Fear River. It’s the kind of porch where you don’t mind sitting outside drinking sweet tea on a lazy summer Sunday afternoon. On June 17, The Artisans Gallery on Howe celebrates its first anniversary at the Howe Street location. It’s a long story that started a few years ago with the unfortunate loss of the original gallery space at the Marina in St. James. “The original Artisans Gallery was located at the St. James

Plantation Marina,” said Donna Davis, artist, and Artisan Communications Vice President. “The Artisans Gallery was very successful in that location, offering many events including Plein air, featured artists, and art walks. After many years, the Gallery was closed when the property was purchased

by the Marina, which needed the space to enlarge the Marina office,” she said. “The Artisans searched for about two-and-a-half years for an appropriate property to open another gallery, and finally the space at 114 S. Howe Street in Southport became available.”

a member of Downtown Southport Inc,” said Davis. “The Artisans Gallery on Howe has been a positive influencer during this pandemic for many gallery members including myself. The gallery provided a way to cope during a very restrictive time by encouraging creative relief while staying safe at home. It also provided needed social connection at a time of social distancing and feelings of isolation. Providing publicity for The Artisans Gallery on Howe has provided purpose and enjoyment for me,” she said. “The gallery is looking forward to more events like Art on the Porch and Featured Artist where we can highlight the people behind the art and also offering workshops to share our love of the arts. The Artisans Gallery on Howe has done very well during its first year,” said Davis. “The Gallery was also awarded assistance through a grant from the Brunswick Arts Council.” You will find more fine art than just paintings and sculptures - fabulous

During a time when many businesses faced huge challenges staying open, The Artisans Gallery on Howe successfully persevered through the COVID-19 pandemic and public gathering restrictions. The gallery remained open seven days a week and strictly followed CDC guidelines and local mandates. The gallery emphasizes the safety of its members and well as the public. The gallery also served as host for many events, including Art on the Porch, Musicians on the Porch, and Featured Artists.

photography, jewelry, beautiful fabric textiles, linens, glasswork, functional pottery, and much more. You will find some lost art creations such as heirloom hand-stitched smocked children’s clothes, crocheted and knitted items, and woodworking, as well as creative, locally inspired, and found objects such as hand-woven baskets including pine needles and decor using found seashells. You will also find well-tailored hand-sewn purses and wallets and other textiles. And there is much more! With more than 60 artists exhibiting, it is run as a co-op where members play an integral part of the day-to-day operations. “The gallery is looking forward to continuing to be an integral part of downtown Southport,” said Davis. A lot of work goes into the daily operations of the gallery. Currently, the Artisans President is Donna Kanich, and day-to-day operations are led by VP Retail Chairs Marian MacKerer and Kristine Holt, with the assistance of many retail committee members

Alongside the gallery operations, the Artisans run Stepping Up For Arts (SUFA) which is a 501(c)3 organization associated with The Artisans. “The goal of this organization is to promote and support the arts in the communities of Brunswick County through art appreciation and educational opportunities,” said Davis. “Scholarships in fine arts are limited and we dedicate ourselves to ensuring that deserving Brunswick County Public Schools graduating High School students can pursue their craft at the college level. We have a proud history of awarding multiple annual scholarships so these young adults may continue their studies in any field of art.” You can donate to SUFA by going to The Artisans website to make a donation via mail or online.

Solstice by the Sea New Event Brings Arts To The Beach STORY BY JEFFREY STITES

O

ur county is so full of wonderful artists that it takes quite a bit of time to celebrate everything in one day, so why not use the longest day of the year? The inaugural Solstice By the Sea Festival is coming to Oak Island’s Middleton Park on June 19 from 10 am - 8 pm and will feature everything from storytelling and poetry to dance and live music with an arts market and food trucks rounding things out. This fun is being brought to us by the Brunswick Arts Council in cooperation with the Southport evening Rotary Club, The SoundHouse, Inspirations Dance Studio and the Friends of Oak Island Parks and recreation.

“We want people to come out and enjoy the day,” said Brunswick Arts Council Executive Director Mary Beth Livers. “They can enjoy live music on the field, walk around and maybe buy a piece of local artwork, go to the beach, and come back later for more. We just want people to say ‘Let’s play. Let’s go have fun.”

“We’re envisioning this as a free day where people can come and go and have a great time,” said Livers. “We’re envisioning this growing. This will be the first of many years. We anticipate Solstice By The Sea becoming a fixture in the community.” Livers said the Brunswick Arts Council takes advantage of lacking a physical home base. “We operate without walls, so we actually use all the different sites and venues in the county. Many arts councils have a building but

we don’t. We’re the thread that connects all the beaches,” she said. Whatever your interests or talents, Solstice By The Sea promises something for everyone, something Livers said she sees as a major mission of the Arts Council. “The creative things we do….those are a part of our outlook. We need to be able to do those things. We want everyone to get out there and try it and have fun,” she said.

The festival will feature two stages. Under the band shell, entertainment will begin with storytelling by Kat Littleturtle and her son Kaya, continue with a variety of local musicians featuring styles from rock to reggae, and wrap up with a performance by The SoundHouse owner Tina Smith. The second stage will feature dance performances from Inspirations Dance Studios throughout the day and an open mic from 5-8 pm. “This is family fun, but if anyone wants to try, be our guest,” said Livers, “Just tell us what you want to do and you can have 10 minutes to do your thing.” The Brunswick Arts Council will host a hospitality tent debuting a display of printed poems called “Poetry Opens Doors” before the works go on display around the county. The tent will also be showcasing the winners of the Brunswick County 2040 children’s art competition. Children were asked by the county planning group to illustrate their visions of what Brunswick County will look like in 2040, and we can’t wait to see what they’ve come up with. The Tarheel Storytellers will perform throughout the day and the Southport Evening Rotary Club will host a corn hole tournament beginning at 4 pm. The Arts Market will include between 40-50 local vendors and food trucks will be on site thought the day.

Longevity Secrets

Long-Lived People Have Much In Common BY BRIAN TULLY, MS

O

ne of the best ways to identify factors associated with longevity and good health is to study the individuals that have lived the longest. Blue Zones (also known as “longevity hotspots”) are areas of the world where there is a high concentration of nonagenarians (90+ years of age) and centenarians with very low rates of chronic disease. A large study funded by National Geographic sought to identify and study these populations. Five Blue Zones (Sardinia, Italy; Okinawa, Japan; Loma Linda California, California; Ikaria, Greece; and Nicoya, Costa Rica) were originally identified and studied although several others have since been identified. These areas have the highest prevalence of 90 and 100-year-

olds and some of the lowest rates of chronic disease in the world. While these populations were different ethnicities, lived in different parts of the world, and had different cultural traditions, the researchers were able to distill some characteristics and behaviors that were common among them. There are nine principles (known as The Power 9) divided into four categories:

Move

1) Move Naturally – The world’s longest-lived people don’t pump iron, run marathons or join gyms. Instead, they live in environments that constantly nudge them into moving without thinking about it. They grow gardens and don’t have mechanical conveniences for house and yard work.

Right Outlook

2) Purpose - The Okinawans call it “Ikigai” and the Nicoyans call it “plan de vida” — for both it translates to “why I wake up in the morning.” Knowing your sense of purpose is worth up to seven years of extra life expectancy. 3) Downshift - Even people in the Blue Zones experience stress. Stress leads to chronic inflammation, associated with every major age-related disease. What the world’s longest-lived people have that we don’t are routines to shed that stress. Okinawans take a few moments each day to remember their ancestors, Adventists pray, Ikarians take a nap and Sardinians do happy hour.

46 Southport Magazine /June /June 2021 / www.SouthportMag.com

Eat Wisely

4) 80% Rule - “Hara hachi bu” – the Okinawan, 2500-year old Confucian mantra said before meals reminds them to stop eating when their stomachs are 80 percent full. The 20 percent gap between not being hungry and feeling full could be the difference between losing weight or gaining it. People in the blue zones eat their smallest meal in the late afternoon or early evening and then they don’t eat any more the rest of the day. 5) Plant Slant - Beans, including fava, black, soy and lentils, are the cornerstone of most centenarian diets. Meat—mostly pork—is eaten on average only five times per month. Serving sizes are 3-4 oz., about the size of a deck of cards. 6) Wine at 5 - People in all blue zones (except Adventists) drink alcohol moderately and regularly. Moderate drinkers outlive non-drinkers. The trick is to drink 1-2 glasses per day (preferably Sardinian Cannonau wine), with friends and/or with food. And no, you can’t save up all week and have 14 drinks on Saturday.

Connect

7) Belong - All but five of the 263 centenarians interviewed belonged to some faith-based community. Denomination doesn’t seem to matter. Research shows that attending faithbased services four times per month will add 4-14 years of life expectancy. 8) Loved Ones First - Successful centenarians in the blue zones put their families first. This means keeping aging parents and grandparents nearby or in the home (It lowers disease and mortality rates of children in the home too.). They commit to a life partner (which can add up to three years of life expectancy) and invest in their children with time and love (They’ll be more likely to care for you when the time comes).

committed to each other for life. Research from the Framingham Studies shows that smoking, obesity, happiness, and even loneliness are contagious. So, the social networks of longlived people have favorably shaped their health behaviors. These principles show that while nutrition and physical activity are important to longevity there are other relational, social, emotional and even spiritual factors that are also important. This wholistic view aligns with the concept of Active Aging. This concept has been proposed as a way to promote the benefits of an active lifestyle for increasing longevity and quality of life regardless of past experiences or current conditions. Active aging recognizes the importance of active engagement in life in multiple dimensions of wellness such as physical, emotional, social, spiritual, environmental, occupational and intellectual. One of the best ways to achieve something is to follow the lead of someone that has already experienced success with that you goal you are striving for. I don’t know about you, but one of my main goals in life is to have as many active and healthy years as possible. And none of these principles that are followed by the longest living people in the world seem to challenging to implement, especially considering the payoff. Until next month, stay healthy and active. I am off to implement a few of the above principles right now. As always, if you have any questions or other thoughts to share, I would love to hear from you! Brian@BetterTogetherFitness.com BetterTogetherFitness.com

9) Right Tribe - The world’s longest-lived people chose–or were born into–social circles that supported healthy behaviors, Okinawans created “moais”–groups of five friends that
