MAGA ZINE
The Pet Issue
Meet Maple, Golden Doodle from Mallory Creek
Leland * Belville * Waterford * Magnolia Greens * Brunswick Forest www.LelandMag.com / JANUARY 2018 / Leland Magazine 1
ON THE COVER
Maple is a Cutie!
Golden Doodle Maple takes the cover like a champ. Maple is a four month old female Golden Doodle (Standard Poodle x Golden Retriever) who enjoys napping and wrestling with her brothers who are Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. Her recent accomplishments include climbing stairs, jumping on the couch without assistance and graduating from Puppy Class. Maple is the sweetest scruffy princess you can imagine. She has helped fill the huge hole left in her owner’s hearts after their Golden Retriever Honey passed away very suddenly from cancer earlier this year. She was named Maple as a nod to Honey, and also becasue she is natually sweet.
Her owner, Kim has an in-home retail boutique and is a cancer survivor! Her husband Paul, six year old son Brighton and their 3-pack of dogs moved to Mallory Creek in June. They love spending time together as a family and couldn’t be happier to have Maple as the newest addition.

T
hanks to our readers we were overloaded with furry friends and adorable images. We had far too many to publish all of them. Our job, as you can see, was difficult, with the caliber of cuteness we were faced with. We chose a s many as we could to put in the magazine. We hope you like and smile as much as we did! Thank you Leland and the surrounding areas for sending in such amazing photos!

Dear Cat Owners!
An important message from your local vet BY ALYSSA TRAVIS, DVM, CVMA
D
ear cat owners, You’re falling down on the job. OK, not all of you, but a lot of you. A recent study showed that 50% of adult cats are never brought to the vet unless they are sick or injured. This means that all kinds of thing are going unchecked and pet cats may be suffering needlessly. Yup. I said it. Suffering.
ONCE A MONTH INDOOR/OUTDOOR MARKET JANUARY Market Dates & Times: Friday 1/19 9:00-3:00 Saturday 1/20 9:00-5:00 Sunday 1/21 12:00-5:00

I talk to pet owners all day. Many have both cats and dogs and bring their dogs in for all of their routine care: exams, vaccinations, preventatives. But some of these same people never bring in their cats. The top 2 reasons I hear are: 1) My cat is an indoor cat, so they don’t need anything; or 2) It’s too difficult to get my cat in the carrier and too stressful. I’d rather not put them through that. So let me address the first part first. Living indoors is not living in a bubble. Cats still age, and as such they change and sometimes hurt. Cats, although we think of them as predators, they are also really prey – to any animal larger than they are as well as other cats. And the prey part of their being makes them hide illness and injury because if they don’t they might lose their territory or get beat up or get killed.
SeaglassSalvageMarket.com 8 Leland Magazine /JANUARY 2018 / www.LelandMag.com
So what could be going on with your seemingly healthy indoor cat? Plenty! Every time that door opens, things could potentially come in: did you pet another cat? If so, you could bring home an illness. Did you walk in the dirt? If so, you might have brought in intestinal parasites. Were you wearing pants? If so, a flea or tick could have hitched a ride. Ever seen a mosquito in the house? Yup, they carry disease your cat could get. 50% of indoor only cats have some sort of parasite. What else? The big ones are dental disease (when’s the last time you looked at your cat’s teeth?), pain and arthritis, obesity, and early stages of diseases like kidney failure, thyroid disease and diabetes. And the percentages aren’t low! About 70% of cats over age 3-5 have dental disease – and it hurts! 50%
of cats are overweight, which can lead to arthritis and diabetes. 25-50% of cats have pain, usually back pain. And all those awful diseases? If we catch them early they’re very manageable. If you wait until your cat has lost 5 pounds and isn’t eating…not as much so. As for getting them there… we can help! Your vet have lots of tips for getting your cat in the carrier, for keeping them calm on the ride, and can even offer sedatives (you’ve heard of “sedation dentistry?” this is the cat version!). Some vets even do house calls and our hospital is trying out a pick up service this January (we’ll come to your house and get your cat, then return him or her all fixed up!) . OK. Now you know. Your cat may be hiding parasites, a terrible toothache, back pain, or harboring the beginnings of a disease we can nip in the bud. AND there’s help to get them to the vet with minimal stress. Don’t let your cat suffer from lack of care. We know you love them and want them to be happy, but there’s no true happy without healthy. So call your vet – MEOW IS THE TIME!

STORY BY: AMI BROWN
A
ccording to the SPCA, it’s estimated that 75 million dogs and 85 million cats are owned in the United States. Approximately 40% of all households in the United States have a dog, and 35% have a cat, these statistics do not include all those other pets like bunnies, hamsters and ferrets. There is also a growing population of exotic pets like snakes, potbelly pigs and even hedgehogs. These numbers equate to Americans spending 60 Billion dollars on their pets each year! That’s a lot of bones.
The pet industry is obviously a HUGE one! And all of us pet owners know that our pets are more than JUST fluffy animals – they are part of our family. Pet owners spend an average of $150 each month on their pets, so this article is dedicated to all those owners – who want to do just a little more for their four-legged baby. Outdoor dog houses that rival your beach cottage - I found a few amazing examples of custom dog houses that
match the main home, that provide a bone shaped swimming pool and even a two story lounger. Whether you want a little bungalow in the shape of a barrel or a cute little doggie camper, there is something for every furry friend. You could choose to hire a custom builder or designer to create your dream doggie home. You can also find retailers that sell kits like these if you want a bit of do-it yourself. Some of the unlikely suppliers

of these custom kit houses include: JC Penny, Jet.com, Walmart.com and homedepot.com. Hayneedle.com has nice budget doghouses but also offer a huge cape cod style that sells for $4,000. They also have a cute two story version that will only set you back $129. You can also order these super dog house with an in-built heater for those colder climates. Beyondhtecrate.com is a luxury site where you can have a custom doggie mansion designed for you. Be ready to pay big bucks, this is not cheap service – worthy of a celebrity pet for sure. Designer Judson Beaumont came up with the Pet Trailers in order to make the whole pet owning experience more fun. Straight Line Design offers a collection of unique trailers, fit for small size dogs. They even have designs for the do-it-yourself handyman. The best news is that the home are fully customizable and the materials used in the built are environmentallyfriendly – aluminum, plywood and plastics were recycled and used in manufacturing the awesome piece. biz q&a 2 - Tell me a little about your background? Betsy has been involved with animal wellness and nutrition for the last 15 years, having worked for an holistic veterinarian up north in Connecticut. David had been in the restaurant business for over 25 years, and now in animal wellness & nutrition since we opened in 2013. 3 - What inspired you to open Family Dog Naturals? We’ve been in business for almost five years now after relocating from CT. We found at the time it was difficult to find a store on this side of the bridge that carried the type of clean, healthful food that we feed our two pups. Simply…we felt there was a need for it.

f you have a furry family member, then Family Dog Naturals is definitely a place you need to visit. This local Leland business prides themselves on quality products, and that total wellness starts with your pet’s healthy diet.
1 - What makes Family Dog Naturals different from other pet stores? To be honest we don’t really use the term “pet” too often, if at all. These animals are our companions and our family, that’s why it’s in our name! We think the major differences between Family Dog Naturals and the big box

mega stores are that we are local and your neighbors. Not only is our store in Leland, but we also are proud to be Leland residents as well. We are not one of hundreds or even thousands owned by a huge corporation. In our business, corporate is right here behind the counter for you.

4 - Tell us a little about your best selling products. Some of our most popular products (outside of food) include a liquid joint supplement for dogs and cats that some say works wonders (both our dogs have flourished on it). A variety of all natural, easily digestible chews are always a hit. And last but certainly not least, our chemical/pesticide free flea & tick prevention products have been gaining popularity, considering some of the side effects those harsh chemicals can cause. 5 - Who is your typical customer? Our typical customer has particular standards when it comes to their animals. We pride ourselves in selecting a variety of quality products for them to choose from. They would also be one who wants only what is healthiest for their fur babies. 6 - What is the biggest myth when it comes to pet food/treats? (something people may not be aware of) Myths that come to mind are that you have to spend a lot of money for a quality, non-commercial diet, and that you should never switch an animal’s food. We feel it’s vital to change their proteins often. Another myth is that dry kibble cleans the dog’s teeth. In our experience, most dogs inhale and just swallow their food… how does that clean their teeth? Good old fashioned brushing, or a raw marrow bone once a week works like a charm! 7 - I see you carry dog vitamins and supplements.... tell us more about that. Do young, healthy dogs need it? Absolutely. A dog or cat of any age requires a daily dose of vitamins and minerals. We carry a variety of dog and cat supplements that complete any meal
and keep the immune system strong. Just feeding dry or wet food, in our opinion, isn’t enough. 8 - If my dog has skin allergies, what kind of specialty grooming products do you offer? If you think your animal has allergies, the most important question we would ask is what you might be feeding them, including treats. We do carry a variety of natural, chemical free grooming sprays, salves and ointments to help with hot spots or skin irritations. More importantly, it may not be an allergy at all. Perhaps it’s a reaction to the harsh chemicals used not only for flea & tick products, but also chemicals used in lawn applications. We feel it’s always good to get to the root of the problem. 9 - My older dog is missing lots of teeth, do you have any kind of treat or special food that might be suitable? Of course. Freeze dried raw is always a winner for any dog in our opinion because it can be rehydrated so its moist, tasty and easy to chew. We carry an assortment of quality soft and chewy treats! 10 – My dog and cat are very particular when it comes to food and treats. Do you have any samples for them to try? Of course! Come by anytime and any one of our knowledgeable staff, either Betsy, Dave, Val or Shelby will be happy to consult with you about your needs and give you complimentary samples for your dog or cat.
FUN QUESTIONS: 1 - What was the last movie you saw? Bad Moms…so funny 2 - Do you binge watch anything? Yes…Stranger Things 3 - What is the one place you’d love to visit? We’ve always wanted to go to Italy…one of these days. 4 - Do you have any hidden talents? Not so much, we’re a pretty transparent couple but we like singing (no one else does though) 5 - What is your favorite hobby? (besides pet outings) Betsy likes walking trails and riding her bike, Dave likes woodworking and tennis.

F
or this month’s Pet Issue, I figured I’d review some pet beers. Not beers you cuddle and love and call “George” mind you, but beers with a pet on the label or in the name. It seems there are very few, if any, beers named after cats or goldfish or ferrets or cockatiels or pot-bellied pigs (but how cool would a pot-bellied pig beer be?), so what we have is beers featuring man’s best friend, the dog. It stands to reason, I guess. Beer, like your dog, is always there for you, always loyal and true, and is happy to be by your side in good times and bad. Before I try to justify this any further, lets get to sampling some beer, shall we?
ELLIE’S BROWN ALE, AVERY BREWING CO. 5.5% ABV 28 IBU
The label says: Named after our beloved chocolate lab, this beautiful, deep russet brew is dominated by a chocolate and brown sugar maltiness with hints of vanilla and nuts, producing a very smooth, well-balanced and quaffable brown ale. My take: First off, how funny is it that Word flags “maltiness” as a misspelling but not “quaffable”? But on to the beer! This is delicious. Ellie would be proud, I’m thinking. Without adding any actual chocolate to the mix, this ale has an unmistakable chocolate flavor that blends really well with the maltiness. The liquid is a deep, dark brown and it smells just as good as it tastes. Oh, and it gets extra points because the can is labeled “Lab Tested.” Get it?
OLD LEGHUMPER ROBUST PORTER, THIRSTY DOG BREWING COMPANY 5.8% ABV, 24 IBU
The label says: This robust porter is dark brown in color and full bodied with a malty sweet taste. Deep roasted, yet silky smooth! Two types of roasted malts, including roasted chocolate malt, give this beer its award-winning flavor. My take: This is similar to Ellie’s in its use of chocolate malts, and it carries the flavors off just as well. As a porter, Old Leghumper is more robust and a bit thicker than Ellie’s, but personally, I love that. The beer is as dark as the black lab on the label with just a hint of bitterness and lots of maltiness that stays with you long after the beer is gone. I love a beer with staying power!
WYNDRIDGE FARM BARN DOG CHOCOLATE VANILLA IMPERIAL PORTER 7% ABV 20 IBU
The label says: Come and get it old sport! From the windswept hills of Pennsylvania comes a farm-crafted chocolate imperial porter. Wyndridge Farms Barn Dog is a good-natured, hard-working porter for a refined palate. My take: The vanilla in this sweetens things up a bit, but maybe a bit too much. It’s not entirely unbalanced though and not at all a bad beer. For fans of chocolate porters, and I’m one of them, this is a good brew. The label explains that it uses Ghana cacoa nuts (so the chocolate in this is not just chocolatey tasting malt) and Madagascar vanilla beans. Want to know something about Madagascar vanilla beans? See, vanilla beans can be sourced from Tahiti, Mexico and Madagascar, but Madagascar produces the sweetest specimens. They are in high demand because of a resurgence in vanilla-flavored beverages and food. This is the best thing to happen to Madagascar since the island was home base to pirates preying on trade routes from Asia to Europe and the Americas, including one Captain William Kidd. So there you go, beer and pirates in one article. You’re welcome.
THIRSTY DOG BREWING COMPANY SIBERIAN NIGHT IMPERIAL STOUT 9.7% ABV 58 IBU
in this tradition. It is creamy and full-bodied with a complex character from generous amounts of roasted, toasted, and caramel malts. For those who demand flavor, this is the perfect libation. My take: It truly is full of flavor, but maybe too full for me. I love malty beers and am learning to appreciate hoppy beers, but malty and hoppy in one is a bit too much flavor (or too many flavors), I think. There’s too much going on for any one feature to be truly enjoyable. This beer doesn’t know if it’s chocolatey or bready or coffee or floral, because it’s all of these things in almost equal measure. I’m not saying it’s bad at all, as someone with a more sophisticated palette may find this beer one of the best ever. It’s just not the beer for me.
THIRSTY DOG BREWING COMPANY SCARLET O’HOPPY 6.3% ABV 60 IBU
The label says: This IPA invites you in with bright citrus notes that fall off into an earthy backdrop. My take: Scarlet O’Hoppy is a great representation of an American India Pale Ale. It’s very hop-forward. Actually, it’s the opposite of the above Imperial Stout as this brew is all about hops. And it keeps the flavor profile very simple as well. Hops can give beer a variety of flavors from citrus to pine to floral and this one sticks very much in the citrus realm. It works very well for what it is and I’m sure it will make anyone who finds a beer called “O’Hoppy” appealing very, very happy.
The label says: Imperial Stouts are by far the “Grand Daddy” of all stouts. They are very, very dark and rich, with a deep-roasted, satisfying flavor. Siberian Night is made www.LelandMag.com / JANUARY 2018 / Leland Magazine 19

There are some things that you can’t help but be drawn towards, even if your instincts tell you otherwise. The New Range Rover Velar with its bold stance and slender full LED headlights may appear rather intimidating. But inside, it’s a welcoming sanctuary you can’t help but enter. A truly compelling design, inside and out, that can’t help but captivate you. And of course, it’s a Land Rover vehicle with unrivaled capability.

hen current owner Tom Miller first noticed the little building on US Hwy 17 on his drive to his furniture store in Myrtle Beach, it was a motorcycle bar. “JW’s” was the name. Over time it was sold to other owners, who changed the bar’s name to “Shamrock” and later “Billy Goats.” The names changed but the owners continued to cultivate the biker crowd.
It’s midnight at Jondough Coffee and Doughnuts, and the fresh, handmade doughnut-making is underway. The dough is made and rolled out, the doughnuts are cut out and the frying begins. Tucker Connette heads out the door by 4:20 a.m. to make deliveries to area retailers, and other employees begin the baking for the shop. By the end of the day, they will have made 5-6 batches total, over 30 dozen doughnuts. It sounds like a smooth, precisely run operation, but it has taken awhile to get to that point. Owners Jon Connette, his son Tucker and sister-in-law Evelyn are celebrating their first anniversary at the shop in Leland. The little building on Village Road was formerly a bank, then more recently a dry cleaning business. When they renovated the building, the Connette’s concrete construction background came in handy. The counter tops and table tops are all uniquely made of concrete, designed and built by Jon and his son Tucker. Original paintings of doughnuts adorn the walls; a local customer so loved the sweet stuff that she sat down there one day and painted them. Some areas in the building remain from past businesses – the drive-through area and the bank vault are still there. Evelyn laughs and explains that the vault is their office space today. “But we didn’t find any leftover money there,” she says. “That would have been a plus.” When the Connettes started the business, they had experience in coffee roasting but not doughnut-making. They spent many months testing doughnut recipes, tossing out many batches as they perfected the product. Today, the ever-popular glazed doughnut is one of their biggest sellers. But chocolate and
maple- bacon choices are right up there too. Evelyn describes the appeal of the latter. “When I first bit into the maple-bacon doughnut it reminded me of pancakes and bacon” she says. Not a bad association, one might say. And every holiday season brings in new creations. Cinco de Mayo was celebrated with the margarita-flavored doughnut. For the Christmas and New Year’s season, there are snowmen, reindeer, eggnog andcherry-bomb doughnuts to put you in the spirit of the holidays. Most would say the Connettes picked a great location to build their business. Jon has been in the area for 30 years; Evelyn 19 years and Tucker his whole life. They have seen Leland change a great deal in that time. “When I moved here from Ohio, there was nothing here,” relates Evelyn. “Leland is growing a lot – and that’s good news for us and other businesses here.” In their short time in business, the Connettes have cultivated a very loyal customer base. “We have a lot of regulars, people we’ve gotten to know,” says Evelyn. “When they call ahead, we already know their order and can get it ready for them when they come in.” The Brunswick Forest, Magnolia Greens, Waterford and other newer communities have been big customers for Jondough. Some of their residents from New York actually helped Jondough locate a supplier for their preferred bagel product. “We had many New Yorkers coming in, asking us for New York bagels,” recalls Evelyn. “We wanted to accommodate them. We tried six different bagels, and finally found one supplier who got it right. We’re told it’s all about the water – the New York water is what makes that bagel authentic.”
Area business people also frequently call on Jondough to provide special orders. “One lady comes in every week and picks up doughnuts to take to her clients,” says Evelyn. “And last year a law firm had us make 20 dozen doughnuts for their event.” The wholesale deliveries are also a big part of Jondough’s business. They provide fresh doughnuts daily to nine area retail outlets, including Java Dog and Gigi’s in Wilmington, Handy Hugo’s and Go Gas. The Hawthorne Apartments in Leland get five dozen doughnuts every Saturday. Deliveries have to be made by 5:30 a.m. each day and the Connettes hope to grow that business. Supporting the local community is another important objective. A nearby church – Closer Walk – receives monthly donations from Jondough for the homeless community they serve. The students at North Brunswick High School are selling Jondough discount cards as a fundraiser. Local first responders, seniors and veterans receive a discount as well. The Connettes hope to participate in more community events in the future. They had a very popular adult doughnut-eating contest this year, and, due to pressure from area kids, are planning a similar contest for children next year. Proceeds will benefit the local Habitat for Humanities organization. With their first year under their belt, Evelyn sums up Jondough’s continuing commitment to quality. “The doughnuts are made fresh every morning, all done by hand. Basically we just bring a homemade touch to the store.” Try them; you’ll be glad you did.

history Breed All About it! A history of popular dog breeds BY KASS FINCHER
I
n the clothes we wear, the music we enjoy and the cars we drive, American popular culture tends to influence many aspects of our life choices. It shows who we are, or at last aspire to be.
Choosing the family dog is no different. Over time, the most popular breeds in our country have not been just a reflection of the economic times; they have often reflected what’s popular on the screen.
Since the early 1900s, the American Kennel Club has maintained a list of the most popular breeds. Here are the top breeds from 1900 to today.
1900s: Collie This lovable breed held sway in the top 10 for seven decades. Their origins are murky, but were thought to have originated as herding dogs in Scotland and northern England. Of course TV’s Lassie in the 1960s only added to the breed’s high profile – the dog’s loyalty and many rescues of the accident-prone Timmy made every child want one.
1920s: German Shepherd Loyal, intelligent and hard-working, this breed jumped to prominence in part thanks to the stardom of canine actors. “Strongheart” was a 125-pound German dog trained as an attack police dog and used in the German military in WW1. After training to reduce some of his aggressive behaviors, he went on to make his first movie – “The Silent Call” – in 1921, and became a star. “Rin Tin Tin” was rescued from the battlefield by an American soldier, and went on to appear in 27 movies and achieve international fame.

1940s: Cocker Spaniel The smallest of the spaniels, this breed stayed in the top 10 for 16 years. Again, a well-known canine star prompted many people to want this dog. “My Own Brucie” was an AKC Westminster Best of Show winner in those years. Stubborn but beautiful, he was said to have been the most photographed dog in the world. 1950s: Beagle The earliest origins of this breed appear to be the 1860s, when they were brought from England. Once again, popular culture influenced this breed’s rise to the top. Charlie Brown’s best friend Snoopy in the Peanuts comics made this breed an irresistible choice.
1910s: Boston Terrier The first American-created breed to make the list, this dog was a cross between an English bulldog and a white English terrier. No lapdog, though small, the Boston Terrier is known for its intelligence and playful nature. They stayed in the top 10 for six decades.
JEWELRY • FURNITURE LOCAL ART HOME ACCESSORIES GIFTS • AND MORE
1930s: Boston Terrier Once again, this popular breed bounced back to the top of the pack. They had remained in the top three spots for the previous three decades. It seemed that the Depression years favored breeds that were smaller, companion types.
1960s-1970s: Poodle This elegant breed held the number one spot for two decades. A famous example was Marilyn Monroe’s “Maf”- a gift from Frank Sinatra. Originally from Germany, the breed was bred to hunt and retrieve ducks; the German word “pudel” means to splash in the water. 1980s: Cocker Spaniel Making a comeback in this decade, this breed continues to be a popular choice. 1990s: Labrador Retriever Now holding the top spot for the past 30 years, this breed was originally from Newfoundland. Notoriously spirited but a great family dog, the Labrador Retriever needs lots of exercise, preferably swimming and chasing balls.
Today some of these previously popular breeds still hold our favor. Here is the AKC top 10 list from 2016. 1. Labrador Retriever 2. German Shepherd 3. Golden Retriever 4. Bulldog 5. Beagle 6. French Bulldog 7. Poodle 8. Rottweiler 9. Yorkshire Terrier 10. Boxer Today, because of the amount of information out there, making a choice for one’s best friend can be almost overwhelming. On the internet, one can research the breed’s personality traits, needs and nature – both good and bad. Are they good with children? Do they need lots of outdoor space? How much exercise do they need? What are their potential health issues? Or there’s another option. You can go to your nearest shelter and pick out a rescue dog. He or she will undoubtedly be overcome with love for you. Not a hard choice for some of us.

DIY Pet Treats
Healthy options that taste great! STORY BY KASS FINCHER
As we ring in the New Year, many of us make resolutions that (fingers crossed) we hope to keep. Although our pets don’t participate in this annual rite, we should also keep their needs in mind as we set our goals for the year. Is Fido overweight? Does Fluffy have allergies? Despite your vet’s advice, your best friend doesn’t always have to forego treats to address his issues. There are commercially-made treats that you can find either online or in your local store, but it is possible to make simple homemade treats yourself that will keep your pet’s special needs in mind. Here are several options for treats you can make in your own kitchen. For overweight dogs, try these Beef Glazed Green Bean Dog Treats from DogKitchen.com. You can use a 1 ½ inch dog cookie cutter and you’ll yield 4 dozen treats! They will keep fresh in the refrigerator for 3 weeks; they’ll be good in the freezer for 6 months. Ingredients: • ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese, low or fat free • 3 1/2 cups whole wheat flour • 1/2 cup green beans, mashed • 1 cup beef broth, reduced sodium, plus 1/4 cup for glaze • 1/4 cup milk, low or fat free • 1 tbsp olive oil Additional Flour for Rolling Instructions: 1. Preheat oven to 350° F 2. Gently toss the cheddar cheese and the flour in a large bowl. Set aside. 3. In a small bowl, mash the green beans. 4. Stir in the broth, milk, and olive oil to the green bean mixture. 5. Make a well in the center of the cheese flour. 6. Pour in the green bean mixture and mix thoroughly. 7. Knead the dough in the bowl until combined. 8. Fold out onto a floured surface and continue to knead using extra flour. 9. Knead until you have a firm dough. 10. Roll out the dough to 1/4 inch thickness. Cut out preferred shapes. 11. Place the cut outs on a baking sheet that has been lightly sprayed with nonstick cooking spray. 12. Pour 1/4 cup of beef broth into a small bowl.
13. Using a pastry brush, lightly brush the broth onto the cut out cookies. 14. Bake for 30 minutes. For your allergy-prone mutt, try these 4-Ingredient Peanut Butter Dog Cookies from WildernessFamilyNaturals.com. They are gluten-free and easy to make. The expeller-pressed coconut oil imparts a nutty, toasted flavor. Yield is about 30 cookies. Ingredients: • 3 cups gluten-free flour • ½ cup peanut butter – no salt or sugar added • 2 tablespons expeller-pressed coconut oil, softened • 1 cup water Instructions: 1.Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. 2.Mix the softened oil, peanut butter, and water in a mixing bowl. 3.Add the flour - blend 1 cup at a time and mix well. 4.Then knead into a firm dough. 5.Roll the dough to 1/4” thick on a lightly floured surface. 6.Use a cookie cutter to cut out cookies. A bone-shaped cutter is adorable. 7.Place on an ungreased cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. 8.Bake 15 to 20 minutes. 9.Cool completely before serving. And for the third of our population who are cat people, you can’t go wrong with these Catnip Bites, from Petful.com. Catnip leaves contain an oil that can put many cats on a “high,” like psychoactive drugs for humans. Just hope Fluffy doesn’t roll around and act weirder than usual while enjoying these treats.
Ingredients: • 1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour • 1 1/2 teaspoons organic catnip • 1/3 cup dry milk • 1/2 cup milk • 2 tablespoons melted butter • 1 tablespoon honey • 1 large egg
Instructions: 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. 2. Combine dry ingredients in mixing bowls. 3. Add wet ingredients and mix to form dough. 4. Roll out, adding more flour if needed, and cut into squares or small shapes. 5. Bake for approximately 20 minutes. 6. Cool completely. 7. Store in airtight container or freeze and thaw as needed.

native of historic Wilmington, North Carolina, Ronald Williams studied art in New York City at both the Arts Students League and Parson’s School of Design where he received his Fine Arts degree. Being recognized as a leading commission artist, he is best known for his ability to encapsulate ambiance within his paintings of architectural designs, residential homes as well as coastal landscape and seascapes. Williams uses a variety of painting style including watercolor, acrylic and pen and ink drawings. His artwork brilliantly highlights our beautiful beaches, historical monuments and architecture.
Growing up just a block away from the Cape Fear River in Wilmington, the heavy influence of the coastal landscape and historical architecture is obvious in his work. Whether it’s the giant live oak trees lining Arlie Gardens, the seaside landmark of Johnny Mercer’s Pier or the gorgeous architecture the Bellamy Mansion, Williams’ art captures the southern charm of Wilmington perfectly. “I love the salt life and the local history in this area, that’s what I try to capture in my
art work,” he said. “As long as its historical or coastal I am inspired to paint.” His process involves first doing a study outside and then creating the painting inside. Although he has experience using many different painting mediums, watercolor paint is what is he prefers now for his own artwork. Williams does much of his work by private commissions. “I like doing commissions for people of their favorite scene or home place,” he said. “I worked in

fitness Healthy Goals and How to Succeed
Easy Steps That Can Make All The Difference! BY: BRIAN TULLY, MS, EP-C
H
ow to Actually Achieve Your Fitness Resolution…This Year... The New Year is upon us, bringing the opportunity for fresh starts and the important fitness resolutions that improve our health. Nearly 45% of all Americans will have made one or more fitness resolutions for 2018. Perhaps you know someone, or even you yourself, has made a fitness resolution for this New Year. Shockingly though, 92% of people that make a resolution will fail to achieve it. All that hope and desire to finally make that change, only to fail. Well don’t give up hope yet, below are the tips you need to be one of the 8% that actually succeed at keeping their fitness resolutions this year!
28 Leland Magazine /JANUARY 2018 / www.LelandMag.com
Know your “why” - Why have you decided to make your fitness resolution? This is a very important step. You must try to visualize how you will feel and how your life will be different when you accomplish your resolution. Write the goal and your why down. Be very descriptive
so it is easy to visualize your success each time you read it. Put it places you will see it. Don’t put it in a drawer. Put it on your nightstand, your dashboard of your car, on your desk, on the mirror in the bathroom. Make it visible to keep the reminder constant. When it feels hard, you must focus on why you started
fitness and how you will feel when you accomplish it. A strong enough “why” will be bigger than every excuse! Be Specific - Your resolution must be specific. It is not enough to just say lose weight. How will you know if you are successful? Will it be a successful resolution if you lose 1 lb by December 1st? I think it is safe to say…probably not. It would be far better to resolve to lose 20 lbs by September 1st and keep it off through the end of the year. Be Realistic – You must be honest with where you are starting in comparison to where you want to go. And then you must determine a realistic timeline. To decide to lose 20 lbs is probably a healthy choice to make. However deciding to lose 20 lbs by February 1st, will not be the healthiest or most sustainable approach. And if you currently don’t exercise at all, don’t resolve to start exercising for an hour a day 7 days a week. Start with 2 days a week. Set yourself up for success not failure.
Have a Plan – now that you have a specific goal and a realistic timeframe, you will need a plan of how you will achieve it. The best plan will consist of many small doable steps. These steps should be easy to achieve, meaning you are highly confident that you can do them. Each step should directly move you closer to your overall goal…even if it is the smallest of steps closer. Be sure
you celebrate the accomplishment of each of the steps, not just the end goal. Each of these small successes will build momentum. That momentum leads to consistency. And in the end, it will be the consistency that will bring you to the real results. Find Support and Accountability – find someone that can help keep you on track and provide the support you need to stay committed. This can come in many forms. It could be an online group with similar goals, a friend or family member, a fitness professional (who can also help with the plan), or an actual local support group. When you know there is someone else involved that equally wants to see you succeed, it becomes harder to quit. Have your support system in place from day 1; don’t wait until you need it. What a good resolution might look like: I will lose 20 lbs of fat by September 1st and keep it off through the end of 2018. This means I need to lose an av-
erage of about ½ pound per week. I will start by adding 20-30 minutes of planned moderately intense activity each day. To help with this, each night before bed, I will lay out my clothes, have a scheduled time to complete my activity, and have a plan of what I will do for those 20-30 minutes. I will check my progress every 3 weeks and adjust my plan accordingly to stay on track. I am doing this because I want to be healthy to be around for my family for many years to come. I will tell my family of this goal and why it is important, so that they can be my support group and keep me focused. The above is a slightly generalized, high level example. Your goals and the plan needed will be specific to you. But using the above tips and example will put you on the right track and improve your chances of achieving your fitness resolution this year. Best of luck and Happy New Year! I hope 2018 is your best year yet!
