Leland Police Department Announces New Digital Crime Map Tool
I
t seems that there is always an APP for that. The ever growing Leland is not only embracing new technologies to enhance systems, they are now using it to map crime. The Leland Town website now includes an interactive map to track real time crime data.
The Leland Police Department now provides near real-time crime information through the recently launched Community Crime Map digital tool to keep the public informed about crime.
Community Crime Map automatically syncs to Leland Police Department’s secure record system, cleans data to protect privacy, and displays it to the public, both online and in the mobile app, so citizens are aware of events that occur in their area and take action to stay safe. The crime data displayed on the map, grid and dashboard is geocoded and included basic information about each incident, including the type of crime, location type, block-level address, date and time. Leland citizens can view the map and grid of reported crimes, sign up for emailed neighborhood watch reports, and submit an anonymous tip about a crime directly to Leland Police. Community Crime Map goes beyond crime mapping by automatically alerting citizens about recent crime activity and improving communication between the public and law enforcement through anonymous tipping. This is a valuable tool for law enforcement to communicate crime activity to the public, and for the public to be empowered to make informed decisions by understanding crime activity in their neighborhood. https://www.townofleland.com/departments/police/crime-map

Purple Heart Dinner The Cape Fear Purple Heart Association honors recipients and their families
O
n Saturday, August 11, 2018, Wilmington will be hosting the fifth annual Cape Fear Purple Heart Dinner as a tribute to the Purple Heart recipients in the five-county area surrounding Wilmington. The Wilmington Convention Center, 5pm
The Purple Heart is awarded to those who have been wounded or killed while serving with the US Military. Established by George Washington in 1782 as the badge of military merit, the Purple Heart’s order includes the phrase “Let it be known that he who wears the military order of the Purple Heart has given of his blood in the defense of his homeland and shall forever be revered by his fellow countrymen.” The mission of the Cape Fear Purple Heart Association is to provide a forum for the community to honor Purple Heart recipients and their families, to foster an environment of goodwill among combat
wounded veterans, to promote patriotism and to encourage the sharing of recipient experiences so future generations will know of the sacrifices made by veterans and their families. Your sponsorship is needed to make this tribute possible. Your sponsorship will allow us to honor Purple Heart recipients and a family member of each recipient. The attached sponsor sheet will help you determine what level of tax deductible donation you will make. All contributions will be used solely for the event which will be coordinated through a volunteer committee from local community organizations.
Checks for Sponsorships or individual tickets should be made payable to Cape Fear Purple Heart Association and mailed to 1001 Rosea Court, Leland NC, 28451. Individual tickets are $25 per ticket. Please join us in honoring our area’s Pur-
ple Heart recipients. You will find it a moving experience to witness these veterans as they pass through the sword arch and are recognized for their service. For more information call 910-399-3933 or email cfphainc@gmail.com

Health Eat, Shop, Stay Fit Tips for Healthy Grocery Shopping and Dining Out WRITTEN BY, BRIAN TULLY, MS, EP-C
E
ven the best intentions will fall flat without a plan. For many us trying to get and stay fit, the eating component can be the hardest part. There are basically two places your food is going to come from…the grocery store or dining out. The challenge of making the right choices on either path can be overwhelming. With this month’s article, I plan to offer some helpful tips for both the grocery store and dining out that will help keep you on track. NAVIGATING THE GROCERY STORE
Work the Edges In almost every grocery store you will find that the inner aisles are where the processed foods are located. This is where all the boxed, bagged and canned foods live; basically the non-clean foods, which in most cases equates
to the foods to avoid or at least limit. Many of these items are filled with unhealthy additives and chemicals to preserve shelf life. Do your body a favor and limit or even skip the inner aisles and instead stick to the outside edges. Here you will find all your clean foods such as meat, seafood, produce and dairy.

Health Look High and Low Did you know that some of the worst foods tend to be placed at eye level on the shelves? It’s an awful trick for those of us on a quick shopping run. Some manufacturers actually pay extra to have their products at eye level to increase sales. This is good for them, but bad for you and me. When navigating the shelves look high and low to find some more of the healthier options. Less is More Remember the basic equation of “Less Packaging = More Nutrition”. Another simple equation to commit to memory is “Fewer Ingredients = Healthier Food”. Review the nutrition labels on any packaged products, before you buy. A good rule of thumb is to pick the items with 5 ingredients or less. As the list of ingredients gets longer you typically see ingredients that are harder to pronounce, which typically means the items were created in a lab. This most likely means the product is filled with stuff your body doesn’t want or need. Or better yet, pick the food items without an ingredients label…like an apple…one ingredient, no label. Terminology Tips Whole Grain vs. Multi-Grain: Whole Grain indicates that the whole grain (the bran, germ and endosperm) has been used… this is a great choice. Multi-Grain indicates that more than one type of grain has been used, but none of them are necessarily whole grains and there is a chance that these grains were stripped of all their nutritional value. Low Fat and Low Sugar: This doesn’t always mean it’s healthy. Low fat products are often loaded with sugar to make up for taking out the fat and vice versa. Organic: Organic foods are foods produced without the use of pesticides and chemicals. Most organic foods found in your local grocery stores can be a little bit more expensive. One way to save some money on organic produce is to shop local farmer’s stands and markets (be sure to ask though). To save a couple of dollars, there are times when you can skip organic. A good rule to follow is to go organic if the skin is thin or edible. If the food item contains a thicker skin (not edible) this will provide a better barrier to pesticides and chemicals. Go Organic: Apples, peaches, strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, cherries, grapes, pears, nectarines, peppers, celery, potatoes, and carrots, all lettuces and greens such as kale, collards, mustard, swiss chard, and spinach Save Some Money: Avocados, pineapples, bananas, corn, kiwi, mangoes, papaya, sweet peas, oranges, grapefruit, squash, broccoli, cabbage, asparagus, cauliflower, eggplant, melons, and sweet potatoes
HEALTHY TIPS FOR DINING OUT
While it will usually be healthier to prepare your own food, let’s be realistic...there will be times that dining out is part of the plan. No need to completely go off the deep end

when it is; instead try your best to make some healthier choices using these tips. • Plan ahead by checking out the menu in advance for healthier options and then stick to the plan when you arrive; no need to follow the crowd • Ask for healthy substitutions (side salad or veggies instead of fries; dressing on the side; add grilled chicken to a salad, etc.)…most restaurants are more than willing to accommodate • Choose a balanced meal that includes protein and vegetables • Choose items that are grilled, broiled or sautéed instead of fried • Avoid cream sauce based dishes, these are loaded with calories • Skip the bread basket, appetizer and dessert…stay focused on healthier main meal if you are specifically focused on weight loss • Eat slowly and sip water throughout your meal • Stop eating when you feel about 80% full instead of when you are stuffed • Skip the empty calories from alcohol and soda; choose water • If portions are large you can share a main dish OR ask for a take out box as soon as your meal comes and box up half the meal right away for another meal • For a lighter option: choose an appetizer and a side salad for your meal Remember it doesn’t matter how hard you work in the gym, if you don’t control what you put on your plate. Hopefully these tips will help guide you to make better choices and keep you on track. Of course, be sure to enjoy a treat meal every once in a while. You can still reach your goals and enjoy life at the same time. It is all about balance.

savor Hot Diggity Dog!
Brodee Dogs serves ‘em up just like you like ‘em STORY & PHOTOS BY KASS FINCHER
W
hen Cindy and Lee Kent were deciding what to do with their little retail space in the Food Lion shopping center in Leland, they looked around to see what other businesses were located there. “We were going to put an olive oil and vinegar place here,” says Lee, “but I was standing outside looking around the parking lot and decided this was probably not the right place for that. I’ve learned in the past you have to engage people in what you want them to do. So if they’re not into that type of shopping there, you’re probably not in the right place for it. I looked around and saw everybody had hamburgers and that type of thing and I thought, well, let’s try hot dogs. That’s how Brodee Dogs came about.”
The idea also paid tribute to a long-standing family tradition from Cindy’s household. Her dad was a big hot dog fan; every Friday night was hot dog night, so why not keep that going? After deciding on hot dogs, their next decision was what to name the business. Lee laughs as he describes that process. “We were sitting around the house talking about what to name it,” he says, “and Cindy looked at me and said, ‘you know you’re missing the obvious.’ She pointed to our little dachshund and said ‘why don’t you name it after him,’ and I said yeah, Brodee Dogs, that has a nice ring to it. So that’s where we got the name.” Since the family pet Brodee is a dachshund or “weiner dog,” it all kind of made sense. The Kents then spent some time researching what other hot dog restaurants offer, and they came up with 12 specialty dogs for the initial menu. The Brodee Dog is probably the most popular – bacon wrapped with Brodee special sauce and cheddar cheese. The sauce is a secret mayonnaise-based family recipe that is a big hit. Another family specialty dog is “Papa John’s Way,” a nod to Cindy’s dad’s recipe, with yellow mustard, chili, onions and slaw. Besides the “Brunswick,” “Leland”and “Kent” specialty dogs, there are also standard options like the “Reuben,” “German” and “Tex Mex” versions.
All the specialty choices are all-beef hot dogs. A simple menu was their goal, but the Kents soon recognized that not everyone would want to choose from just the specialty dog menu. Their 17-year-old son Christian brought it up. “He said, I might not want one of those one day,” says Lee. “So we came up with ‘build-a-dog,’ where you pick your options. You can pick your dog, your bun and your toppings.” The “underdog” is a beef-pork blend; the “Carolina reds” are favorites with many customers who grew up with the bright red dogs. There’s also a veggie version – the “Garden”– if that’s to your liking.
Jonathan Green and Lee Kruz. “We’ve got some other sandwich options,” says Lee. “ We needed a few things other than hot dogs, alternatives for people who don’t care for hot dogs. We do a simple pimento cheese, homemade with fresh grated cheese. The chicken salad is a favorite – it’s made with rotisserie chicken. We can put it on a bed of lettuce for those who don’t want bread, especially in the summertime when people want something lighter.” They also offer a sweet Italian sausage dog, as well as the freshly ground quarter-pound hamburger. It’s not on the menu, but Kent says you can absolutely order it. Sides include fries, onion rings, tater tots and a potato knish. The latter choice, for those of us unfamiliar with it, is like a mashed potato, crushed and deep fried. “It’s called street food up in the New York area,” says Lee. “A friend of mine from there said we should offer that, and people from up there really like that.” Only open since September 2017, the Kents say business has been great. They moved to Leland 21 years ago, and today, with four children and six grandchildren, the family is committed to the community as well as several other businesses. They still plan to open the olive oil shop in another location this summer, and they are busy with other enterprises too. Next door is Kent & Co. – a ladies boutique – and there are five Vapor Shacks that they own in the region. Over the years, the Kents have seen much change in the Leland area. “When I first moved here,” Lee relates, “I could pull out on Hwy 133 and I didn’t
have to look left or right. I could drive all the way to Southport and not see another car! Not the case anymore.” But the Kents recognize that this growth in the community bodes well for their business, and they support local causes to give back when they can. Among other nonprofit causes, Brodee Dogs donates 1% of gross sales to “Furever Friends,” a local group that helps pay the medical bills for local animal rescue efforts. Founder Dr. Sheila Hanby with Capeside Animal Hospital is working with the Kents to have a community fundraiser event this summer. Watch for more details ahead. Whether you’re a dog lover or a hot dog lover, it’s a great way to give back and enjoy yourself a Brodee Dog!

cheers The Big Three
The low down on the back bone of American Beer, no crafts in sight STORY AND PHOTO BY JEFF STITES
A
merican brewing has been known for some of the world’s biggest producers of beer. The Big American Brewers, Anheuser-Busch, Miller and Coors, have become known for light beers that are, depending on your perspective, very easy to drink or essentially flavorless.
Each brewer, though, has a heritage of more flavorful beers, usually pilsner-style lagers. What better way to celebrate the Fourth of July in the Cheers column than by taking a look at Big American Breweries? The trouble with that plan is that the Big Three American brewers are not American anymore. We live in a global economy now and the brewing industry has experienced an unprecedented amount of multi-national consolidation. Anheuser-Busch was acquired by Belgian beverage conglomerate InBev, Miller Brewing was purchased by South African Breweries (SAB) and Coors Brewing merged with Canada’s Molson Brewing. You can’t blame these businesses, it’s a dog eat dog world and consolidation across national borders both creates economies of scale and opens up new markets, but it’s hard to get all “rah rah USA” about Belgian, South African and Canadian companies. What’s a Cheers columnist to do?
There is plenty of brewing going on in America, don’t misunderstand. The craft brewing boom has led to a situation where it’s hard to find yourself more than a few miles away from a small brewer anywhere in the country. The problem is that the craft beer phenomenon is predicated on the idea that these brewers will stay small. As soon as one hits a certain level of success in terms of number of barrels of beer produced, the craft beer drinking public decides they are no longer “craft.” It’s kind of silly, really. Whether you make a small batch or a large number of huge batches, if you use the same recipe it’s the same beer. I’ve chosen three brewers that represent a middle ground between the crafts and the huge multinationals. All are American-owned and American-made. The first, and oldest, is Yuengling, founded in 1829 in Pottsville, PA. Yuengling is still owned by the Yuenglings and still brewed in Pottsville but has opened two other breweries,

one in Florida and one in Texas, to bring its products to a larger audience. The second is Pabst, also dating back to the 1800s. Pabst has seen it’s ups and downs but was most recently acquired by an American investor who seems to be showing the company some love, even going as far as building a brewery. Pabst has been contracting to be brewed by Miller for years, but retains its independence as a company. Pabst has been sort of a collector of American brewing history by buying up and producing smaller classic regional brews such as Lone Star, Olympia and Ballantine. I appreciate that. The third brewer I’ve selected is an example of a craft brewer out-growing the craft label, the Boston Beer Company, makers of Sam Adams. Sam Adams arguably kicked off the craft brew craze, but now it’s hard to find a beer aficionado who considers them a true craft brew. They have grown beyond the label, though they still very much consider themselves a craft brewer, and, I would argue, back it up with some very creative and delicious offerings on par with anything being cooked up by the newer upstarts. I’ve chosen two old stand-bys and one new offering to review.
engage in any marketing to speak of. But why bother, really? It’s just a good, classic American lager that everyone has heard of and those who try come to love. I have to admit, this is one of my favorite go-to summer/beach beers. And it is pretty easy on the wallet to boot.
Pabst Brewing Company Pabst Blue Ribbon The Label Says: This is the Original Pabst Blue Ribbon Beer. Nature’s choicest products provide its prized flavor. Only the finest of hops and grains are used. Selected as American Best in 1893. My Take: Pabst Blue Ribbon has been experiencing a resurgence among the younger beer drinker set for a few years now. I think they are attracted to it exactly because the Pabst company doesn’t really
My Take: What could be more patriotic than a Samuel Adams named after our country’s year of birth? Sam ’76 is a mixture of ale and lager (someday I’ll do a column on the difference) and though it’s hard to argue that isn’t a gimmick, this beer works very well. It’s not the “revolutionary” idea the label claims, but it is very refreshing and more flavorful than the bright yellow color would lead you to believe.
D. G. Yuengling & Son Yuengling Traditional Lager The Label Says: American Owned. Family Operated. America’s Oldest Brewery My Take: See, I told you Yuengling had been around a long time. As a Pennsylvania native, I’m partial to Yuengling. Heck, I even have Dick Yuengling’s (the owner of the company) autograph on a bar napkin somewhere. Yuengling is a little more amber and tad more robust than the rest of the big, mass-produced American lagers. Craft brewers will poo-poo it, but this is a finely crafted brew, and delicious.
Boston Beer Company Sam ‘76 4.7% ABV 12 IBU The Label Says: Sam ’76 is a perfect union of lager and ale, giving you a craft beer with the flavor of an ale and the refreshment and crisp finish of a lager. The result is revolutionary.

art beat Naturally Unexpected
Ami Brown showcases her unexpected art at the LCAC STORY BY CARLA EDSTROM
I
am thrilled this month to be writing about my multi talented artist friend and editor of Southport and Leland Magazines, Ami Brown.
Sometimes in life you meet someone and you just know that they are going to be a friend. Such is the case of when I met Ami a few years ago at Franklin Square Gallery in Southport. I was instantly drawn in by her positive kind-hearted nature. I remember us
having a discussion in my pottery studio about her being a freelance writer and how I always wanted to do that but I didn’t feel like I had the enough education or experience for writing professionally. And I hadn’t written anything for so long, I thought it was

art beat just a pipe dream I would never fulfill. She told me that I should just do it and encouraged me to start writing again. Not long after that, Ami became the editor of Southport Magazine and the next thing I knew, she asked me to write for the magazine. I will always be grateful that she took a chance on me as a writer. With her abundant creativity and her fearless ability to pull amazing ideas out of thin air, Ami never ceases to amaze me. Being a multi-media artist, writer and overall creative person is nothing new to her, and it’s always been part of who she is. “I remember taking art classes as a child, I loved drawing animals and nature, flowers, trees, birds,” she explained. “As I got older I started drawing and painting people. I took a portrait painting class at Michaels and I absolutely loved it,” she said. “Writing and painting are my two passions and I feel lucky to have them both as my “real” job,” said Ami. “It hardly feels like I am actually working! I guess my creativity has always been part of what I love doing,” she said. “I was the editor of my High School paper and I have always loved to write. I started helping my brother-in-law with his web content several years ago, and I kind of fell back in love with writing. When I moved to Southport in 2015, I reached out to
the magazine and was hired as one of the freelance writers, and now I am the editor. I absolutely love that I can meet the people in the area and write about community and events here.” Ami’s art is always growing as she finds inspiration everywhere in ordinary things. “My favorite thing to do is to just start out with a rough idea, and then start painting and it always changes,” she said. “It evolves and goes somewhere new, and somewhere exciting. And I love that about painting abstracts,” said Ami. “I love to take photos of random objects, rusted bolts, peeling paint, an old broken piece of wood, and look at it up close,” she said. She explained that she loves to focus on a section of an object and paint just that part, such as a couple paintings she made of rusted bolts that were on the Oak Island pier a few years ago. “I am inspired by the simplest of things really.” Using mostly oil and acrylic paints, Ami also uses other elements of style in her painting such as textures and gloss finishes. “When I do commissions, I am pretty open to content, but I do use oil and acrylic, depending on what I am painting,” said Ami. “If it’s a large abstract, then I’ll use oil. If it’s an animal or portrait I will generally use acrylic, just so it can dry faster. I like to incorporate other types of paint and
Tri-glets in a tub high gloss on certain areas to make the image more interesting,” she explains. “I was given a set of oil paints when I was about 17 years old from an Aunt and I fell in love with how oil paint moves and blends colors. Something you can’t really do with acrylics or watercolor,” she explains. “I recently took an alcohol ink class and loved that too.” Ami recently won first place in the Oak Island Sea to Shore Exhibition for her alcohol ink flower painting. Another big inspiration of Ami’s art is birds. As a volunteer for Sea Biscuit Wildlife Center on Oak Island, she gets to care for and observe the birds’ behavior weekly. Ami’s love of nature is apparent in her paintings, from her colorful alcohol ink flower tiles to her large paintings of whimsical frogs and birds. “I love how nature and the elements create beautiful patterns, colors and textures,” she said. Having her roots scattered all over the East Coast, Ami is happy to now make Southport her home. “I am definitely drawn to water, and have always loved to be near the ocean and water,” she said. “I lived in New Zealand for 10 1/2 years. I opened my own art gallery while I was there and loved it. The gallery gave me the confidence really to explore all kinds of painting.” Ami has been working hard to create work for her featured artists show at the Leland Community Arts Center July 6-August 3rd, with her artist reception July 12th from 6-8pm. “The title of the exhibition is “Naturally
Unexpected,” Ami explained. “I created artworks based around nature, but with some kind of twist, something unexpected. I mean how many bowls of fruit are there anyway? Have you ever seen piglets in a bathtub? Well you will!” Her show in July isn’t the only featured show she will have this summer. You can also see Ami’s art at the Wine Rack in Southport during the entire month of August. And Ami promises that this show will be totally different from the show in Leland. And with all of her creativity, I have no doubt it will be fantastic!

Kitchen Hot Dogs! Get your hot dogs... STORY BY KRIS BEASLEY
J
uly is National Hot Dog Month and it’s no wonder. I mean what is more American than a hot dog? Well, actually Germany gets the credit for inventing the initial sausage like frankfurter. But the good ole US of A is the reason more than 20 billion hot dogs are consumed each year. That works out to about 70 hot dogs per person each year. Hot dogs are served in 95 percent of homes in the United States, according to the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council. And the 4th of July is when the largest number of dogs are eaten, 150 million! And you will never guess which city takes the trophy for eating the most hot dogs annually, Los Angeles! I thought it would be fun to find some non-traditional hot dog recipes. From marinated dogs to a new spin on an old favorite... corn dog, I hope you will enjoy and feel deliciously patriotic this Hot Dog Month of July!
1 package hot dogs cut into bite size pieces 1/2 cup chopped red onion 1 can (8oz.) Refrigerated Crescent Dinner Rolls or 1 can (8oz.) Refridgerated crescent dough sheet 3/4 shredded Cheddar Cheese
MARINATED GRILLED HOT DOGS
Ingredients: 8 Hot Dogs 1/4 Cup Ketchup 2 Tbsp Worcestershire Sauce 1 Garlic 1 Tsp Vegetable Oil Instructions: With a small, sharp knife, make cuts at an angle in 2 rows down each hot dog, about 1/2 inch apart, cutting partway into the hot dog. The cuts shouldlook like rounded half circles. Mix the ketchup with the worcestershire sauce, oil and garlic. Pour into a large ziplock bag, add hot dogs and let marinate for 15-20 minutes. Light grill. Grill the hot dogs until nicely charred and the cuts open up, about 3-5 minutes total.

Whisk to fully combine. Lightly grease a mini muffin tin. Spoon a little of the batter into each tin, filling it to about 3/4 full. Place a hot dog half upright, down the center of each muffin. Bake for 15 minutes, or until cooked through. Serve immediately with sriracha sauce!
Ingredients: 1/2 cup chili sauce 3 tablespoons brown sugar 2 tablespoons deli mustard 1 (16-ounce) package quarter-pound hot dogs, cut into 16 pieces (see Note) 2 ears fresh corn, cut into 1-inch slices 1 green bell pepper, cut into 12 pieces 1 small red onion, peeled and cut into half-moons 1 red bell pepper, cut into 12 pieces 4 (12-inch) metal skewers Instructions Preheat grill to medium heat In a medium bowl, combine chili sauce, brown sugar, and mustard; mix well and set aside. showcase Chicago Rewired LCAC Presents the Premier Chicago Tribute Band, Friday, July 20 STORY BY: A M I B R OW N
T
he Legendary group Chicago has a DOUBLE! Meet Chicago Rewired, A Tribute Band. If you are a fan of the big band, foot tapping up beat tempo of Chicago, you’re going to love this band. I saw Chicago many years ago, and can’t wait to see them and sing all the lyrics to my favorites!
In the summer of 2015, local Charlotte drummer Mike Graci had an idea: He wanted to break away from the run-of-the-mill cover music he heard being played around town so he worked to put together something special. He began diligently seeking out the musicians required to realize his vision. With all of the pieces in place, the group established themselves as Chicago Rewired - The Premier Chicago Tribute Band.
Chicago Rewired - is a tribute to “Chicago®” – one the longest running and most successful pop/rock groups in history with record sales topping 100,000,000 including 21 top 10 singles, 5 consecutive number one albums, 11 number one singles, and 5 gold singles. The band comprises a unique blend of talented and seasoned musicians joining forces with the common goal of accurately replicating the timeless music of “Chicago®” – the soundtrack to
great memories for so many people. The True To Life Chicago Experience The members of Chicago Rewired - feel very fortunate to play the music that they love and to share their passion. It is their sincere desire that at every performance the audience have as much fun as they are having on stage. Come out to a show, forget about the cares of life for a while, and let the music carry you away.
